Europeans Call Out 50 “Hard Truths” That They Think Americans Are Not Yet Ready To Hear
Americans and Europeans share many things, including a commitment to fundamental democratic principles, a strategic military alliance, and some of the highest living standards in the world. However, there still are some notable differences between the two sides of the Atlantic.
And one Reddit discussion draws attention to many of them in quite a funny way. Started by a person who goes on the platform by the nickname Mamutu7, it asked: "Europeans, what is something us Americans aren't ready to hear?" Immediately, people from the Old Continent started replying, and it became a lighthearted roast pretty quickly.

Excuse the pun, but it seen we’re at a tipping point with tipping culture. Besides people making an average wage expecting tips for just doing their jobs, and restaurants asking for 20-25-30% tips, it’s really shone a spotlight on how stupid tipping culture is.

No wonder you see government as an oppressor of your freedom, and other people as threats: You go from the islands that are your workplace, your shopping space and your home in a car, as everything in between is unwalkable hostile territory.
Europeans spend their lives in common parks, squares, public spaces, social clubs, cafes, pubs... And feel 'at home' walking in between those spaces, since the space in between is a social area as well. That makes it natural to perceive yourself as part of the community, and feel a social obligation to do your part to maintain it (through taxes for example) which seems pretty much impossible in the American lifestyle.
Your car dependent infrastructure is terrible. You shouldn't be forced to own a car just to be able to go anywhere.

The hypocrisy on this one makes me laugh. We (USA) are absolutely guilty as charged. HOWEVER.. Tell me again about the origin of the phrase "The sun never sets on the British empire" and all the horrific things done in the name of helping the people in "lesser" countries be moral and civilized. Or how German tried to force their vision for the world on the world. There is plenty of blame to go around on this one.
Yes... That's the past though and very few people are alive today from these periods in history. Can hardly blame those making decisions today for those of the past. Perhaps a better point would be to consider how people would feel if the US refused to provide any help today. The support recently provided to Ukraine is a good example. Wouldn't go down very well if the US said no. There's a fine line with being too involved/not involved enough and I'm extremely glad that I'm not the one deciding what needs to be done!! There has been criticism of other countries for not seeming to stump up enough after all. There is definitely plenty of blame to go around and for things happening now - sadly.

I'm confused why so many reactions are about asking for military aid. This point is about pushing your morals on someone. One of my neighbours is a true Karen, but when she struggled with getting her bike in the shed, I held the door open for her. I didn't demand her to agree with me at the next HOA meeting, I just helped because I recognised it was needed. All these people saying the USA gets asked for military aid conveniently forget that giving aid doesn't automatically mean forcing your opinions on others.
It's not about being entitled to do it. It's because we're the only superpower, so we're the only country left who is even capable of it, let alone willing. The UN can't be counted on because it's too spineless to do anything when it's really needed. Putin can't be trusted to do it because he has the opposite problem; he'll fight wars over nothing. And China is too unpredictable because they can't seem to decide between hardcore socialism and continuing their experiments with capitalism. So you see, it's not that we *want* to, it's that we *have* to because no one else is willing, able or trustworthy. Besides, you're lucky we don't get involved *more* often.

Well, the US was asked for help during WWII and wanted nothing to do with it. Then a thing called Pearl Harbour happened... bringing the war to their door. But I'd like to say, as an Englishman who has worked for and with Americans for 25 years that you have many great qualities as a people and nation. You're friendly to newcomers, have great national parks, have a brilliant "we can succeed" attitude, work hard, consider public service and charity a duty, can rapidly adapt to new ideas if they are profitable, have a strong admiration and willingness to protect democracy, and have a great sense of humour.

There was a European guy who stormed into the hotel lobby wearing nothing but tighty-whiteys, yelling & cursing because his room service order didn’t have the complimentary chocolate dipped strawberries (we were out) to go with the champagne he ordered. What if I judged all his countrymen by his horrible obnoxious behavior? It looks like that’s what a lot of people on here are doing…
American here. I agree with most (all?) of this and I consequently carry a lot of shame and embarrassment. We deserve to be criticized, but this just feels flat out mean-spirited. One of the things I have enjoyed most about BP is the community I feel with other readers around the world, but this is very divisive.
Jfc. None of this is a secret from us. Recently BP asked what social norms apply to America. And time and time again we said "stop coming here and just pointing out flaws we already know about and frustrate us." Overwelmingly, comments were like "well yeah that's true everywhere". Yeah BUT NO ONE FEELS COMPELLED TO DO IT EVERYWHERE ELSE. stfu, we know, we have very little ability to change these things. Especially when it comes to medical/edu costs. That's why those issues are drug through the mud constantly.
Oh, I got one: Your sports teams need to stay in one city. That does not happen elsewhere (OK, the Sydney Swans were from Melbourne but AFL is dumb). Seriously, Arsenal only moved to the other side of the Thames, but not another city.

So I get that everyone in the world apparently hate the US and all of its people. But y'all either need to let it go or hate us quietly. Tired of hearing the same things over and over.
Okay, must hurt being constantly critized. But from my pov it's just the answer to listening to how the US is the greatest country in the world for so many years. Fair enough for those who think so. But I also want to be able to express that I'm being grateful to live in Germany. The tipping point, when I stopped glorifying the US was, when we found out, that the NSA was spying on us. It was when the relationship between Germany and the US was on really good terms, which was during the Obama legislation. His only reaction was, that that's what friends do. Not even a pretended apology. I'm pretty sure, that the reaction would have been different when it had been the other way round. It also didn't help that Trump openly insulted our chancellor. But this has got nothing to do with Americans. I just really dislike some of the attitudes of the most annoying and loudest ones.

The us is by far not the best place to live, but it's also not the worst. I don't have to worry about being raped for going outside without covering every inch of myself. I can carry a gun to protect myself from the one who would actually use it for evil things, and protect others from them too. Oh boy! Can it be that mystical, magical time again? That amazing time where BoredPanda runs out of content to copy-and-paste from Reddit? That time where they can’t be bothered to write any of their own content so they have to rely on clickbait and spreading harmful and stereotypical content about other countries. This site has lost any integrity it had from the over the top censorship to the constant “America is a cesspool and Europe is the epitome of the cultural renaissance” listicles. Stereotypes are lazy and cruel. Stop or you’re going to continue losing readers.
While I am also adding to this thread & hence the issue, can I just say that every click & comment makes BP happy even if all the comments are negative? It's just numbers to show advertisers. They put up the US bashing articles because they really get us going. If we want this to stop, we need to not read it & not comment, don't even downvote. I suppose it's nigh on impossible as new people join but then I see most of the commenters are actually regulars on BP. I know the desire to defend yourselves is going to be sky high (& I support you I truly do) but we really would do better to ignore these posts, for these articles to be greeted by silence. Sorry... it's a wish of mine that we'd be able to be that co-ordinated, to wield a small bit of power over the worse content on this site & stop it. Every comment and vote counts and it's working against us sadly.

Not everyone from England speaks 'posh'. Take it from someone who is from the North-East of England. We're also not as polite as you seem to think we are. One thing I do like about Americans is that they seem to celebrate eccentricity more than we do. I say "seem" because I'm only basing that on what I've read & seen in media.

I haven't read all the entries, but speaking as a US American, the first twenty or so seem pretty accurate. I think more than a few Americans would agree with many of these.

Especially with some of the disinformation in this post… Little ol’ me, I just wish for world peace & the best for everyone, whatever country they’re from. ☮️💟The ‘rude American tourist’ thing gets me though…I worked at an international 5 star hotel chain, and I’ve met a LOT of rude (and Loud) tourists/foreigners from many different countries. There was a European guy who stormed into the hotel lobby wearing nothing but tighty-whiteys, yelling & cursing because his room service order didn’t have the complimentary chocolate dipped strawberries (we were out) to go with the champagne he ordered. What if I judged all his countrymen by his horrible obnoxious behavior? It looks like that’s what a lot of people on here are doing…
American here. I agree with most (all?) of this and I consequently carry a lot of shame and embarrassment. We deserve to be criticized, but this just feels flat out mean-spirited. One of the things I have enjoyed most about BP is the community I feel with other readers around the world, but this is very divisive.
Jfc. None of this is a secret from us. Recently BP asked what social norms apply to America. And time and time again we said "stop coming here and just pointing out flaws we already know about and frustrate us." Overwelmingly, comments were like "well yeah that's true everywhere". Yeah BUT NO ONE FEELS COMPELLED TO DO IT EVERYWHERE ELSE. stfu, we know, we have very little ability to change these things. Especially when it comes to medical/edu costs. That's why those issues are drug through the mud constantly.
Oh, I got one: Your sports teams need to stay in one city. That does not happen elsewhere (OK, the Sydney Swans were from Melbourne but AFL is dumb). Seriously, Arsenal only moved to the other side of the Thames, but not another city.

I'm an American that's never left the country & not particularly well educated or read but have a functional brain & know there is something inherently wrong w/ our society & system. It's like watching a catastrophe happen in slow motion & I think a lot of us just don't know what to do about it.

So I get that everyone in the world apparently hate the US and all of its people. But y'all either need to let it go or hate us quietly. Tired of hearing the same things over and over.
Okay, must hurt being constantly critized. But from my pov it's just the answer to listening to how the US is the greatest country in the world for so many years. Fair enough for those who think so. But I also want to be able to express that I'm being grateful to live in Germany. The tipping point, when I stopped glorifying the US was, when we found out, that the NSA was spying on us. It was when the relationship between Germany and the US was on really good terms, which was during the Obama legislation. His only reaction was, that that's what friends do. Not even a pretended apology. I'm pretty sure, that the reaction would have been different when it had been the other way round. It also didn't help that Trump openly insulted our chancellor. But this has got nothing to do with Americans. I just really dislike some of the attitudes of the most annoying and loudest ones.
Is it just me or is the vitriol against tipping culture inescapably? As a service worker that likes the topping culture here, wow! I'm not even allowed to say that without a dozen downvotes. For people who hate the hate in America they are really giving us a run for our money with these comments.

Every single one of you defending the US and denouncing the "bashing" are part of the problem. People should attack what we do here in America even more... maybe when we wake up and realize we aren't anywhere near as "great" as our politicians keep saying we are, then maybe we will start to make changes and become more civilized. No one wants to feel bad about themselves or where they live but its the first damn step in making changes and solving those issues.
America sucks. This has been my favorite article of them all. No don't stop making these articles. America is terrible and depressing af. And I am American. Also you forgot how HOSPITALS HAVE SODA AND A BUNCH OF UNHEALTHY SNACKS in the vending machines. Load More Replies... The us is by far not the best place to live, but it's also not the worst. I don't have to worry about being raped for going outside without covering every inch of myself. I can carry a gun to protect myself from the one who would actually use it for evil things, and protect others from them too. Not saying we don't need more gun control, but it's still a bit of a wild west out here because our government is full of idiots. But I would enjoy moving away from here if I could (and if I could bring my kitties with!).
