Protests have erupted all over the US over the death of George Floyd. Cities are imposing curfews and states are activating National Guard members to calm down the demonstrators but they continue to express pain and anger with chants, signs and outbreaks of violence.
And while many questions, like what's going to happen to the police officers involved in the incident, are still unanswered, one thing is certain: the demands for justice and an end to police brutality against African Americans have united the entire country and people of all backgrounds are taking a knee together.

Most aren't, it's the idiots like that awful excuse for a human being killing someone that make up a tiny part of a larger group. But it is true that the dynamic of the police forces in the US is sickening. It is based on the wrong kinda right, a fearful culture and the glorification of violent behavior. And still most cops are honest people, but they are also just humans following what they are told. You might get in thinking you will do right, but will not receive the training and equipment and support you need to actually do that. That's the problem and that needs to be changed. But. It's also part of an even larger problem, which causes riots over racism while at the same time launching astronauts into space commercially and huge tech companies to exist. Oh, and Trump to be president. It's all in the extremes.

Based on accounts from witnesses, video footage, and official statements, here's what the public knows about Mr. Floyd's death so far.
Everything began with a report of a fake $20 bill. A report was made on the evening of the 25th of May, when Mr. Floyd bought a pack of cigarettes from a grocery store. The store employee thought the $20 bill Mr. Floyd paid with was counterfeit and reported it to police.
Mr. Floyd had been living in Minneapolis for several years after. He had recently been working as a bouncer but just like so many other Americans became unemployed during the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr. Floyd was a regular at Cup Foods, the grocery store where he tried to buy the cigarettes. Mike Abumayyaleh, the owner of the store, told NBC that Mr. Floyd was a friendly face and a pleasant customer who never caused any trouble. But Mr. Abumayyaleh wasn't working that day.

There are more people who want genuine peace in these "so called" United States, then those who do not... The outside world is watching and it's not a good look! I say salute this man for taking the stand he took! It's time to really reform what is wrong, and any one with eyes and or ears knows what it is...I'll go so far as to say a nose, because it really reeks right now, so that "United" will really be true!
At around 20:08, two police officers arrived at the scene. Mr. Floyd was sitting in a car parked around the corner with two other people.
After approaching them, one of the officers, Thomas Lane, pulled out his gun and ordered Mr. Floyd to show his hands. In an account of the incident, prosecutors didn't explain why Mr. Lane thought it necessary to draw his gun.
According to the prosecutors, Mr. Lane "put his hands on Mr. Floyd, and pulled him out of the car". Then Mr. Floyd began actively resisting handcuffs.

Can we stop with the "mainstream media" language? It's very Trumpian. I saw all these images via "mainstream' media. When you say "that" media is bad, only trust "this" media you create a bubble that makes it harder and harder to engage with others. There is a lot of bad media out there, but as long as they have fact checkers, and vet sources, and issue apologies when they get things wrong, and do best practices when it comes to journalism, than it doesn't matter if they're popular or underground.

Pictured above is the former deputy chief of police for Fargo, ND. He recently was suspended, then decided to resign for allegations. https://www.kvrr.com/2020/06/04/fargo-police-and-city-of-fargo-announce-suspension-of-deputy-chief/ I don't know the story eons what the media is releasing, but I implore that a number of eyes be kept on this story just in case he's being persecuted for doing good and not taking sides. Judge for yourselves, but this man should not suffer at the hands of his peers for being misunderstood when he was doing what he thought was good.

Floyd was already handcuffed when he had bodyweight through a knee put into his neck. He is lying dead now, and did nothing wrong. He was unarmed. A counterfeit 20 dollar note ? B******T. don't be conned by these nazis.
Once handcuffed, however, Mr. Floyd became compliant and Mr. Lane explained that he was being arrested for "passing counterfeit currency".
But when officers tried to put Mr. Floyd in their squad car, a struggle erupted.
At around 20:14, Mr. Floyd "stiffened up, fell to the ground, and told the officers he was claustrophobic", a transcript released by authorities explained.
Mr. Chauvin arrived at the scene. He and other officers were involved in further attempts to get Mr. Floyd in the police car.

THIS! THIS IS WHAT WE ARE MISSING! It is not supposed to be "White people need to understand..." it is supposed to be "Racists need to understand..." Generalizing a whole race is only enhancing racism NOT FIXING IT, it doesn't change anything. And right now we really need to focus on fixing this corrupted cop system where some cops believe they are on a higher power than the people. These individuals need to understand that they are there to PROTECT the people, to gain our trust because we put our lives into their hands. We can't do that with this kind of behavior. We need justice not just for George Floyde, but every person who has been mistreated, killed, raped, discriminated against by the very people who swore to protect us from these acts. Policemen are not higher than the civilians, they are there to protect and serve US. And the ones who do not follow this need to be aprehended, arrested, and trialed. Racism should not be tolerated by any people, especially by Black communities.

There has always been a "need" for someone to look down on, someone to scorn. In every society, there is someone at the bottom of the ladder - part of the reason we climb and strive is to get out of the bottom layer of society. In this country, the Irish felt this scorn, this hatred and loathing. But they are no longer despised as a group. The scars left from the CIvil War continue to trickle down, and poc still get pushed back to the bottom of the ladder - they're the ones people revert to looking down on. So it IS still rich vs. poor - the haves vs. the have nots. "If we don't keep them 'in their place" then I'LL be the one on the bottom.

That murderer might have done the same thing, or worse to a white man accused of passing counterfeit money. He was following orders. Is there any evidence the twenty dollar bill was fake? At 20:19, Mr. Chauvin pulled Mr. Floyd out of the passenger side, causing the man to fall to the ground.
As he lay there, face down, still in handcuffs, witnesses started to film Mr. Floyd. He appeared to be in a distressed state. These moments, captured on multiple mobile phones and shared widely on social media, were Mr. Floyd's last.
As officers were restraining Mr. Floyd, Mr. Chauvin placed his left knee between his head and neck.
"I can't breathe," Mr. Floyd said repeated, pleading for his mother and begging "please, please, please".
Mr. Chauvin kept his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

About 6 minutes into that period, Mr. Floyd became non-responsive. It was approximately then when Mr. Floyd fell silent and bystanders urged the officers to check his pulse.
One of the other officers, JA Kueng, did exactly that and said he "couldn't find one". But the officers did not move.
At 20:27, Mr. Chauvin removed his knee from Mr. Floyd's neck. He was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center in an ambulance and was pronounced dead around an hour later.

Stick Man, I have serious suspicions that is exactly why there are racists out there STARTING these riots. Two videos I saw just today: a white girl spraypainting Starbucks with BLM while a black woman begged her not to. She finished the job and boldly wandered off with her white friend. Second video - a white guy in the middle of a very peaceful protest, phone camera at the ready, asking the protestors to tip over a truck. The protestors disgust and anger at the suggestion was obvious and he quickly left the scene. One side blames Antifa for inciting this, but I have my suspicions it's the racists joining the protests then creating the chaos to make the people they hate look bad.

Thank you for marching for me, sister, since I'm not physically able to. I'm only 61 but that's what I've been saying to anyone who will listen. Enough already! I was in the first class bussed, when I entered seventh grade. Most of the kids didn't really know what was happening, except that we did our homework on the bus because it was a 45 minute drive each way back to our "changing school" where we picked up the younger students. But we had parents screaming and spitting and hurling things at the teachers at our new school (it had been the black school.) I remember being so puzzled because these were people I had seen at ball games and at church functions. Now their faces were stretched taunt as they yelled obscenities at men, women - and children. When did Jesus say it was ok to spit on a frightened child? Please, let me see the end of this nonsense while I'm still alive. (And yes - I DO know that I've had the easy part. My skin is white. )

I’m 71 and feel the same! “Back then” , I thought we had racism on the run. I thought we had secured a woman!s right to have control of her body. I thought the ecology movement was going to save the earth. Boy! Was I naive!
On Friday, Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman charged Mr. Chauvin with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. His bail has been set at $500,000.
Mr. Floyd's family and their attorney, Benjamin Crump, are upset that Mr. Chauvin wasn't charged with a more serious offense.
"We expected a first-degree murder charge. We want a first-degree murder charge. And we want to see the other officers arrested," Crump and the family said in a statement. "We call on authorities to revise the charges to reflect the true culpability of this officer."
If convicted of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, Mr. Chauvin would be facing up to 25 years in prison on the first charge and up to 10 years on the second.
Mr. Freeman said charges against the other three officers are likely.

The US isn't more divided now than in the past, the difference is that it is actually getting better, more people care when they see a total wrong like this. Decades ago this kind of police activity still happened but it was not talked about, it was not widely condoned. Change is happening, it's just slow sometimes, and piecemeal but it is happening. Just have to keep shouting and fighting injustice, no matter how tired one becomes.

George Floyd's brother, Philonise Floyd, organized the fundraiser, which is called the Official George Floyd Memorial Fund. According to the page's description, the funds will be used to cover funeral and burial expenses, grief counseling and lodging and travel for all court proceedings.

Our local stations showed a lot of coverage of people coming out in droves to help clean up Seattle after the riots. There were people of all walks of life and in many colors out sweeping up glass, washing off graffi, picking up trash and helping put up plywood over broken windows.

The United States (and other parts of the world) truly needs to acknowledge its years of racial intolerance. I understand that there are some truly good cops out there who speak against racism. However, it saddens and sickens me that situations like the brutal murder of George Floyd are going to keep on happening if governments and the police force as a whole don't acknowledge that something desperately needs to be done. I don't have the answers, but there needs to be racial bias training, background checks, cultural acceptance training, etc. Racism is taught and will continue to exist if we don't discuss that these issues exist.

Is it encouraging or annoying of me, as a white woman, to say something supportive to any black person I encounter? I don't want to bother someone in the middle of a store or "single them out" for being black, but I also don't want to ignore the situation.

I've kicked people out of my home for using racial slurs, making racist comments etc. I tell them politely that not only do I not accept it, but I will not have my children exposed to it, if that warning is ignored it's straight out the door with them. Sadly, I've had to do this more than once. We all need to keep calling the racists out.

Just the other week I was reading about white fragility and white women's tears. Made me realise a few things. I live just outside a small, wealthy town where the only non white kids are the ones that go to the public school here. So opportunities to show solidarity are extremely rare. I don't know how it would be if I were still in Croydon where I grew up, a very mixed big town, probably many more opportunities if I wanted them. I think I would also be worried about being 'patronising' or pushy or offensive if I did something that appeared like some kind of white do gooder, collecting brownie points by showing how 'non racist' I am. I'd like to think that if I saw someone being openly racist to someone that I would step in and say something, but then, would I come across as trying to be a 'saviour', would I embarrass them, like they need saving by a middle aged white woman?

This a result of the Sanford Middle School calling for food to feed the children who depend on the school to feed them. The school district can’t deliver food with the chaos. Also, the area has lost their grocery store and post office, both gone. The outpouring of love and care is alive in Minneapolis.

Free alcohol is generally illegal in most part of the US. It may be served free, but it cannot be advertised, due to our woefully antiquated (pre-1968) advertising laws protecting children (it has barely been modified for the internet, but that's another post). Giving away free bottles or cans is generally interpreted as the legal equivalent of offering narcotics freely. By saying it bluntly, it avoids legal liability for the advertisement of it, and it can regulate consumption by age.

There were too many onions during the memorial for Mr. Floyd today. I’m so heartbroken and so furious. Sadly Dr. Baden’s autopsy findings drowned out Terrence’s plea for peace. ....Say his name. Let his name ring out. I have taken special care to remember everyone’s name who share this tragic bond, but I can’t even remember my own kids names half the time. So I go back and check them again. .... .... But there is only one who, to me - has been left out. Why is Michael Brown reduced to a shortcut: “Ferguson?” People don’t use his name. But everyone knows what Ferguson means. Michael Brown. It just really bugs me. There. I got it out. I don’t feel better because this keeps happening!! Filling up...this is so real, so touching and so raw. Many cops are finding this all very difficult too...they want to report colleagues but their superiors are sometimes approving of this racism and so the reporting officer has a real problem to contend with. Does he speak out to the offending officer, knowing full well that he will be supported by his racist commander...or does he tell the racist commander knowing full well that he is likely to lose his job or at least made very uncomfortable in work??? There needs to be a system where normal cops can report these racists without any comeback on them.

This made me cry along with that boy...as a "privileged" elderly white woman, I was always told as a child that if I ran into trouble, seek out a policeman for help. I didn't know that it was a privilege my neighbors and school friends growing up in Detroit Michigan didn't have or would never have. That's why these things make me cry.

Not all cops are bad, in fact, I think most are basically good people, just like any one else doing a very difficult job. I can tell you that I have been arrested, (just once or twice) and there have been police officers that literally saved my life by arresting me. I have had police officers help me, guide me, one officer even paid the rent for a room that night so I could get off the streets. Most police officers join the force so they can help their communities. There are a few bad cops, I have had to deal with them also. I think they have a mental sickness, they hide it and they are able to keep working as police. With this sickness they hurt people, they enjoy hurting people. What I don’t understand is why the good cops don’t say something. Or maybe they do and they are told to be quiet.

that is not nessicarly true they use electricity sparingly and not often, the lady pictured is heavy set (just like me) and with her husban next to her, it would be incressingly difficult, painful, and slightly embarassing for the woman to have to be carried everywhere (and probualy by more than one person). i had a wonderful opprotunity to live with an Amish community for a year, and there are a lot of missconceptions about their way of life. they are not so diffrent from you and I. (sorry for my spelling lol dyslexia is a b***h)

I have no issue with people protesting but I do have a problem with the riots. The riots are just an excuse for thugs to get away with looting, assault, arson etc. By all means make a stand and support the cause but destroying innocent by standers, businesses, homes, lives etc is not the way to go. It also doesn’t help support the cause with all the violence and criminal activities. On another note, the law enforcement need to be held more accountable. I have heard too many incidences where innocent people of colour have been treated shockingly by authority and society in general. Too often they get away with it and enough is enough. Black lives matter.

I am doubtful that any of these actions will have a lasting effect. Alas. As the scholars say, racism in the US is institutionalised. It starts with small things. One example: whenever I take a survey that had been designed in the US, I stumble across "name your race: Caucasian, African Asian". Drop that s**t! Race theories are disproven for decades, we are all humans.

This would have never escalated to this point if the Minnesota police had done the same as the officers shown here. Instead they fired tear gas and rubber bullets into a peaceful protest because of their own irrational fear of retaliation.

I am very worried when I see these things : There is a hidden killer among us, and it's not white, nor black. It loves a huge crowd, as there it can jump from person to person, preferably without masks, and multiply. Stay safe!!

I love this. But f**k the rioters and looters. They are only using the unrest in this time to be criminals and hurt people and their property. I can't believe that people are so selfish as to use a genuine tragedy to make the world a worse place than it already is. I really hope the police can differentiate between the peaceful protesters and the violent anarchists, because otherwise this could turn into absolute chaos.
