A balcony enlarges the living space and range of activities possible in a property without a garden or lawn. If you have one, a little attention can turn it into a really cool hangout spot. Or go crazy with it.
For example, you can turn your balcony into a solar power plant. Or a spaceship. What's that I hear you say? It's impossible? Believe me, that's just scratching the surface.

Unless the pet jumps out of it or something... (The idea is good, but I feel a responsible pet owner should definetly put a thick metal net/bars all around it so their pet doesn't fall)

After so many repeating of word "balcony" I forgot how to say it in my own native language. Other than that, why bother to built nice, designed and functional balcony without any access to it? The hardest part is done, so just add the door.

i did, so here you go: "French balconies, or “Juliet balconies,” are nowhere near big enough for people to stand or sit on. Their main purpose is to provide the feel of a true balcony without the expense or upkeep." dorchester...cony-2.jpg

A lot of the fake balconies are most likely decorative elements. I did a google and "quora" said something about making homes look more luxurious. For larger buildings it's probably an architects choice of making the façade prettier or emphasize the "rhythm" in the design. That said, there seem to be a lot of useless AND horrid examples...
