Tech support consists of many things; it's a range of services companies provide to their customers for products such as software, mobile phones, printers, and other electronic, mechanical, or electromechanical products. But I think that its biggest component is frustration; the soul-crushing feeling every IT person feels when they witness or, God forbid, have to clean up after our stupidity. I'm talking about desecrated HDMI ports, spaghetti cabling, laptops covered in concrete... or as the subreddit r/TechSupportGore calls it—content. This online community collects pics that will make us "cringe to the brink of passing out" and if it gets a point across it's this: technical support services usually provide users with help in solving some common problems rather than providing training on how to use the product. We haven't really learned after Bored Panda's earlier articles on the subreddit here and here. The fails look just as bad!

To be fair to the owner and the cat, PCs have a history of wasting energy and therefore being demanding of ridiculous efforts to cool them (and also being loud as a result). If you NEED a high-performance power-user machine, you probably already have a cat-free workspace or know to discourage the cat.

I’ve seen this before. It’s... weird. What part of our culture tells someone that they don’t need to remove the consumable from the packaging first? Did they remove an empty package from the printer before putting this one in there? It sure looks like critical thinking failure, not a lack of specialized knowledge.

Just another "Oh Dear" moment. . .!

    View more comments

When Bored Panda contacted Coffeechipmunk for an earlier interview, the moderator of the subreddit said that the most popular posts in the community are usually the ones that show a device a moment away from exploding.

“It’s both dangerous and cool,” they explained. “They probably get so big because people post the pics and you think, 'Wow, that's just a bomb at that point.'"

"A lot of the content on the subreddit does rather well, except for people coming for actual tech support, they get redirected to the right subreddit. For actual tech support gore, though, it seems like broken screens and slightly messy wires are the current posts that don't hit too hard," Coffeechipmunk explained.

... and that is why it is called a "BUG" when the computer does not work as intended. Back in the good ol' days, the computers would frequently not funcion propperly due to a fried bug creating a short circuit in the electronics. So "bug" became slang for something in the computer not working as intended. Nowadays most problems arise due to faulty software, caused by the programmer making a blunder, but the terms bug and debugging has stuck and has now gotten the meaning of software not running as intended orfixing problems with software (often after it has been released) respectably.

A PS5!! Already damaged to that degree?!?! I know a kid who needs to restart the journey into learning how to respect and take care of things that are important to you. Starting with not fixing or replacing everything treated carelessly and thus damaged beyond use. Then again, that kind of damage points to a LOT LOT LOT of use, a LOT LOT LOT of screentime. Likely the kid isn't taught much by his caregivers. That would require time away from gaming.

The moderator believes the reason why r/techsupportgore got so popular a simple one: "Honestly... it's very fun," Coffeechipmunk said.

"In a time where most of the internet can be incredibly serious and most times saddening or angering, r/techsupportgore is fun because you go on it and you can laugh (and/or cringe) at the crazy posts. Where else can you see a post like, 'Wow, these cables really are messy' [or] 'A lizard fried my motherboard' back to back? I love our growing community. They're a bunch of people that just enjoy tech and to some extent, the worst of it."

My guess: Just had it lying on a table in a student apartment where it was used as a coaster and casually as an ashtry. Since nobody used it, nobody cleaned it. The thumbsticks are probably just broken from putting things onto them.

I've always wondered why they don't have a simple manual plastic slide over cover. Easy, protects lens, you could program the camera app to remind you to open lens cover, and no creepy spying through your cam! It was easier when phones only had a camera on one side, you could lay that side face down

It's only been "used" to cover the camera, for the well known privacy issue of putting it there in the first place, it's not like it's been pulled off a wound and stuck there covered in blood!

Last I checked, several companies are working on solid-state lithium-ion batteries that don't have the flammable electrolyte. No word on how long it might be before it's ready for prime-time, though.

Looks like they tried to repair where the plug goes in. Sorry, I'm having a brain fast as to the name. Anyways when I took mine in a few years ago for that repair I was told they could try to solder it back in place but that they had couldn't guarantee it would work or how long it would last. I paid $100 for the repair and it worked, for about 3 weeks. Then did this.

Also it’s super weird that the spray paint stops immediately at the top of the screen and isn’t on the top section of the plastic at all. Also why tf would someone be giving away a laptop for free if it was actually functional anyway?

Not the user’s fault whatsoever. This is a perfect example of shittyass software from assshole companies who don’t give a motherfuckingfuck. It IS a support horror story because support people cannot fix the bugs in someone else’s software, but their customers do expect (and deserve) solutions. This is one of the reasons I left IT. It’s a dead end job that puts blame on people who can’t actually do anything about the problem and didn’t cause it in the first place (that’s the IT worker and the client).

Ay! I remember when my dad replaced the cooling fan things years back on our home pc (he did 90s computer tech stuff so we had stuff at home for his work etc plus he bought and refurbished old parts from his work), he had them in bout 30 mins them *BOOM* *swearwords*, dad comes out covered in coffee and black soot. Checked the fan seperately, it was a dud, stopped after approx 1 min. Rang the computer place, 'oh no its specialist we aren't reresponsible blah' plus a bunch of condescending jargon. So dad brought it in and politely schooled them on how their faulty fan had toasted his new hard drive. They replaced it all. I think coz he was 'older' (40s at the time but 90s tech was new), they just were so rude and dismissive. TLDR: faulty fan made expensive computer go boom. Tech experts learned not to judge a technician by his cover ^-^

I once took a look at a friends, step mum's computer as it kept shutting down due to overheating. Turns out it was full of dog hair, so much in fact that it filled the entire case and looked like loft insulation. This is why I always advise people to keep their PC on their desk and not on the floor as she did. She didn't get the issue so I told her it had become a vacuum cleaner that needed it's bag emptying as it sucked up all the dog hair and dust off the floor. I didn't like dumbing it down but some times you just have to.

PoE is Power-over-Ethernet. It is a way of supplying power to devices using the same cable as is used for networking meaning you only need to run one cable to the device. However PoE runs at 50V or thereabouts and devices need to support it. Devices that don't will likely be fried, and this friendly little cable looks like it will happily plug into any network port you happen to have...

POE = Power Over Ethernet, but it generally uses a special DC converter and regulator; not a direct attachment to AC power. _This_ thing is designed to fry anything it gets plugged into.

So this is a joke post, not a support nightmare. You can’t put mains power into a DC powered electronics device, even if it has Power Over LAN. Someone made this cable as a joke, in a service department.

This is not a PoE, this is a Etherkiller. It's made on purpose, and it's not meant to be actually used (even if you really hate someone that much, there are less riskier ways to fry their computer). It's a running joke among tech support people.

I googled and it is a real thing. Name is Thermaltake X-ray. Product Description: Don't laugh... well, okay, you can laugh, but the Thermaltake X-Ray is a surprisingly practical product. The Thermaltake X-Ray is great for any home or office, allowing you to use cigarette adaptor accessories outside of your car. Besides that with the Thermaltake X-Ray you always have a place to keep your drinks, at home, and more importantly at LAN Parties. Now you don't have to worry about mixing drinks up with the people around. Plus, you'll be the weird guy who has a cigarette lighter and drink holder in their computer, doesn't get much better than that, does it? The beverage holder portion has an eject button, and can be closed when not in use.

Given the backpanel's cutout, the case is probably upside down. So it's an older consumer case (which had the PSU on the upper side) poorly fitted with a modern PSU (which is meant to be on the bottom).

microwaves (and wireless phones, baby monitors, etc...) operate on 2.4ghz and can absolutely interfere with wifi signals. this is why newer wifi bands use 5ghz - less interference but the 5ghz is less effective at distance and penetrating walls. as usual, everything is a tradeoff.

You're looking at scuffs on the PCB which should not be there. Only the ones in the lower-right image and beneath J2 in the upper right are concerning as those are data lines, the rest of the scratches are just on the ground plane. Also, they seem to have torn the pad for J2 pin 4 off of the board. It shows very poor practice by whoever worked on it last.

I did that, once. A little-old-lady, friend of a friend, was very worried that 'someone could steal her addresses and things' if she gave away/threw away her old computer. So I got out my camera and pistol, did a series of snaps of the outside of the box, the inside, the hard drive in place, the drive in my hand, then propped up on a chair at the range, then the drive with two .40 cal holes through it. No worries, then.

This was really common in the late '90s. My entire school was wired this way, and not all devices were auto-MDIX at the time and it caused many problems.

"You don't need thermal paste when you've got a cooler installed." as I was told by an intern while he sat down on the principals new laptop.

So they did not use thermal paste to "connect" the cpu to the cooler? So there wasn't adequate heat transfer out of the cpu? I assume it quickly overheated!

The little gray smudge on the cpu is thermal paste. Usually, it is a pea sized blob, not an ant sized smear. It is supposed to spread out and provide a good thermal connection between the cpu and the cooler.

You'd be surprised how bullet proof Intel processors are. I've deliberately abused them far more than this for experimental purposes and they mostly survived.

Is it supposed to be the little smear on the upper right quadrant of the square?

    Thomas

Yes. That smear should have been a thin layer covering at least the center of the CPU.

I've found that potting the terminals with hot-melt glue helps this sort of thing a bit, though judging by the condition of the wires themselves, it was time for a new one anyway.

    M O'Connell

You can't tell its in this condition unless you remove the outer shell of the connector, and there is no reason to do that unless there is a problem. I would assume there was a problem in this case.
