It's 2022 but there are still plenty of people who struggle with computers. Not to mention all the complicated networks that connect them.

And Reddit has all the pictures to prove our ignorance. More specifically, its community 'Tech Support Gore.'

"You will cringe to the brink of passing out after a few minutes looking at this subreddit," its moderators say confidently. And they're not lying.

Tricky cable knots, cracking chips, piles of dust, and poorly designed server rooms, it's all there. Whether you're an IT specialist or just an average internet user, this stuff will get to you.

Continue scrolling to check out the subreddit's recent top posts, and for its earlier gems, fire up our previous publications on it here, here, and here.

I used to do this. I've seen some much worse ones. I was also in a tech group that I was the only girl on any of the 3 shifts, and I was the only one with networking experience. One night, we had a major switch go out that controlled like 32 areas of our operations. Calling in to our ops center, they told us it was going to be 3 hours for the closest tech to get to us. I said multiple times that I had handled the entire system architecture for the huge telecommunications company, so changing a switch was nbd. They still said nope, you're not authorized. I told my shift Lear that was also on the call that I didn't give a F, I was going to do it anyway. I wasn't going to make our customers wait 3+ hours when I could do it in less than 30 minutes. I told one of the other techs to go start unplugging the cables, but every cable I needed labeled, so I knew where it went back in. The other techs trusted me, so I ran to the back, grabbed a back up switch, flashed it with the network config, and had it racked in 20 minutes. It took me and the other tech less than 10 minutes to get everything plugged back in, and then another 10 minutes for testing before I changed the switch to live. My lead and the ops manager both went to bat for me, because I likely saved us from losing some big accounts, but I was still "punished" by having to clean up a bunch of the cabling mess and coming up with an faster inventory tracking system (they knew I loved doing it and I was a database wizard, and they were supposed to punish me somehow so they gave me tasks I loved). I miss that job sometimes.

They wouldn't be any reason for it to return to that state. Once installed those cables are rarely moved.

From experience most rooms look like the top photo. It´s not always good to have everything tied down. It makes it very tricky to add or move things if anything goes down, As long as everything is marked it´s OK with me.

Can confirm, the top photo is typical. I've found the best way to organize cabling while still being able to add/remove/move cables is to use velcro ties. Zip ties are what caused the mess in the first place. You can tell it was organized at one point until more and more cables needed to be added.

This particular pendrive had factory fault, I've had 3 of them and won't buy SanDisk anymore, some of just lock to read only and you can't add anything to it. It has lifetime warranty but what's the point if replacement comes empty and you have to give back the one with your data on it

People seem to need their devices and networks running smoothly now more than ever. Whether we're talking about the comfort of their homes or a regular coffee shop, Americans expect and rely on internet access being available almost wherever they go.

Still, the Federal Communications Commission estimates that more than 21 million people in the United States don't have that connection. That includes nearly 3 in 10 people—27 percent—who live in such rural places as the outreaches of Maine and the fertile fields of Indiana, as well as 2 percent of those living in cities.

The original one on the left would be preferred most of the time... Re-patching (=moving) a cable is much easier when you can just follow it dragging it through your hand. All bunched up it's impossible to follow them and re-patching you almost always have to add a new cable as the bunched up one is not possible to move...

Research shows that as many as 40 percent of schools lack broadband, as do 60 percent of health care facilities outside metropolitan areas. Furthermore, those are conservative estimates.

And at a time when broadband access has become increasingly essential, any community without fast, reliable internet is condemned “to a long, dark death,” said Peggy Schaffer, executive director of Maine’s ConnectME Authority, which is working to extend service in the state.

I've seen this before with ants. They make a hive in a server, and it clogs up the ventilation system. Which does indeed create problems with overheating. Wasps is a new one for me, but not surprising really. It's a warm and dry environment.

Cockroaches will do the same thing! My son lives in New Orleans, where literally the entire city is infested, & they've lost small appliances & a laptop because the roaches like to crawl inside where it's warm, and chew on the plastic coating on the wires. We found a roach killer (Advion) that actually works & they don't have anywhere near the problem they used to.

This reminds me of when I went on a tour of this super expensive data center, about 20 years ago. It was built on coils to prevent damage from earth quakes, and had all sorts of crazy monitoring. They guy said they could detect particulates from a fire 5 hours before the fire becomes visible (or something like that). That was then hooked up to a sprinkler system. As in water. So 5 hours before the fire becomes a problem, they can completely destroy all of the hardware in the building.

Without broadband, Schaffer said, “Kids can't do homework. Older people have to drive off our islands to talk to a doctor. Boats delivering live lobsters from the ocean that can't 'talk' in real-time to their customers lose a competitive edge in the supply chain. Before long, young families, older citizens, and jobs leave. New employers don’t come in."

I have a laptop like this. There was a battery pack under the mousepad; it had swollen up. I removed the useless (and dangerous) battery, and instead used a USB mouse. The laptop works just fine now.

I mean... I can relate. My computer of choice is a laptop... which can't be unplugged because the battery runs down in 5 minutes and the screen is barely hanging onto the bottom half because some screws are missing and I can't even close it because it's too hard to open back up because it tries to break into 3 pieces when I do... but it has good sound and brightness/color :P I have another computer that was bought used and given to me for convenience lol

Still using my late husband's laptop (10 years old at least), outdated software, sticky keys, case held together with mailing tape because it has been dropped so much, has zero battery life so must be plugged in to use. But it still keeps chugging along, letting me avoid the dread visit to the store to buy another one.

So this happens when a battery expands, which all lithium batteries do over time. There is going to come a day when it will either start leaking, or get so swollen it breaks something important. No repair place worth its name will touch it either way. Its just not worth it.

Pretty unusual for a boss to keep using his/her old workhorse like that, at least here in Sweden where most of them "need to have" the latest sh*t – regardless of actual use. I worked 20+ years as a systems developer at various companies; was never provided more than mediocre, often pre-owned computers as tools. Grew tired and changed my trade, but that's another story.

Cost is one of the obstacles that make it difficult to extend broadband internet to everyone who wants it. The companies providing the services need adequate returns to justify their investment in the necessary infrastructure of cables and towers.

And at the other end of the supply-demand equation, many low-income Americans lack access because they can't afford the monthly bills that come with connecting a computer to high-speed internet.

Ooh! Those are crazy ants! They are our modem. Bizarre little f*****s! Don't have a home base. Glom onto other groups of crazy ants in solidarity. Eat electronics. Are drawn into the hum and buzz they make. Then too much is eaten and it shorts.... Killing many at once. The smell of them electrocuting alerts other crazy ants who come running to glom onto surviving pack. Power in numbers. And then they just move on as a group. They've taken over whole stores and homes in the southwest. We had ours in Washington state, but tracked them back to Texas from which my housemate had recently brought a houseplant. When my roomie told me ants had eaten the modem I didn't believe. Since that's not normal. But then I saw! The whole inside of the thing when we took it apart was like metal sawdust and ants. Crazy little buggers!

5G cell relays went up half a block away from me. I was elated, as it was a dead spot as my phone switched from my home wifi to cellular. My neighbor, a renter, began looking to move. I tactfully asked her what the issue is & she said the wavelengths were like X-rays and made people sick. I played dumb & asked her to explain what wavelengths were & why these particular ones were the same as x-rays & how they made people sick. All she could do was tell me she didn’t understand the mechanics, but had articles. She ended up sending me 4 links. Two directly cited a discredited conspiracy theorist. One cited a chain of misquotes back to the same discredited article, 4 removed. The last was two removed from the same. One cuckoo spews nonsense & it echoed so vastly that all her rationalization lead right back to it. I tried explaining echo chambers of misinformation along with a basic understanding of “wavelengths” from broadcast tv to microwave ovens to X-rays. She wouldn’t hear it.

The Pew Research Center reported in May that 44 percent of adults living in households with incomes below $30,000 don’t have broadband.

This disparity in access is also seen in what researchers call the “homework gap”—the differences between school-age children who have access to high-speed internet at home and those who don’t (a 2015 report found that 35 percent of lower-income households with children in school didn’t have a broadband connection at home).

Was at a San Francisco Giants game and a bat splintered and became a projectile heading straight toward me. I managed to duck and it hit the boy sitting behind me, but his Iphone took the hit, saving him from untold tragedy. I was wearing a white team jacket my husband had just gotten for me, and the boy whose phone saved him, had been drinking a hot chocolate, which went all over my back/jacket. So there was some comic relief to an otherwise scary play!

However, the situation is getting better. Policymakers in rural and urban states are trying out new approaches, including building partnerships between public and private entities and using grants from foundations to bring broadband to more sparsely populated places.

According to Shirley Bloomfield, CEO of NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association, a membership organization of nearly 850 small providers in 45 states, small providers often pop up in places large internet companies don’t serve, and hometown phone companies expanding into this market sometimes offer broadband to as few as a hundred neighbors.

It's the top of the processor, with the heatsink or cooler removed. There should be some nice grey thermal paste to transfer the heat away from the processor. Whatever that crystaline gunk is, it is not thermal paste. As suggested below, it could be toothpaste!

Normie 1: My PC keeps running hot, what should I do? Normie 2: The interwebs research I did says to use something called thermal paste under the CPU cooler. Normie 1: Sweet, I already have some of that upstairs. Do you think Crest is good enough or should I run to the grocery store to get a different kind? Normie 2: Idk.. I'm still trying to figure out what a CPU is.

The good news is that broad pessimism stands in contrast with a still-hot labor market. Hiring and quits remain near record highs, while June layoffs remained just under 1% of the workforce.

Tech workers may not have as much bargaining power as early 2022, but they are still well-positioned to look for a new position or land on their feet if they're laid off.

🤦‍♂️ Jesus! The level of incompetence here is breathtaking. The ram slot is literally just underneath the Apple logo on the bottom of the frame. Just undo the two screws and remove the small cover.

It's the only part you can actually get at without difficulty.

If you have to disassemble the machine to upgrade RAM, just forget it.

You don't, there is a small panel on the back just behind the stand on that model that goes to the ram bay iirc.

This is why I refuse the buy another Apple product. My iMac was 5 years old, had a bad graphics card, and Apple's advice was "buy a new iMac!" No thanks. Instead bought a custom tower so I can fix it myself.

It's weird but... wi-fi cannot pass through glass (along with most other materials), so this wouldn't work well unless that's a plastic tank.

The icon represents the floppy disk, not the drive we see here.

This photo would make a good poster for some dystopian scifi movie.
