Urgent! We’ve been trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty! This is the IRS. Someone has attempted to use your social security number to make online purchases. We have a buyer for your Timeshare in Florida! Patricia, is that you? Someone you know is trying to contact you, and they just need a little bit of money to get through. My credit card is not working, can I charge something to your account and pay you back?

Ah, the dreaded phone scams. We’re all familiar with them, and we all hate them. But sometimes, instead of ignoring and immediately blocking these annoying individuals, it might be fun to play along with the act. We’ve gathered some of the most pathetic attempts at scamming people that have been shared on the Scams subreddit, including some where the receivers played their own tricks on the scammers before blocking them or being blocked, so you too can know what to look out for online. Keep reading to also find interviews with scam protection experts, Troy Hunt, Microsoft Regional Director and founder of Have I Been Pwned, and Robert Nordlander, host of the Fraud Fighter Podcast.

Our oldest cat does this. When we don't give into his lies, he pouts and knocks over the scratching post. 😼

My rabbit will do the same, even with food in the bowls (checked twice a day, he's got a good diet of daily fresh greens and hay). He'll also take a treat and "reject it" then ask for more. I only fell for this twice, but caught on after I seen him eat both treats when I "left the room".

To gain some insight on the topic of spam calls, we reached out to Troy Hunt, founder of Have I Been Pwned, a website that works hard to bring an end to data breaches and hacking. When asked why scam phone calls and messages are so common nowadays, Troy says, "Because it's a low-risk criminal activity that can be executed in bulk and have potentially high returns. Compared to more traditional criminal activities such as break and enter, cybercrime is very attractive!"

We also asked him how often people manage to fall for these scammers' tricks. "A huge number of people fall victim to these scams every single day," Troy says. "Part of the problem is the difficulty in separating scams from legitimate emails, in part because the scams do such a good job of emulating genuine communications, but also in part because so much genuine communication is indistinguishable from a scam!"

We also asked Troy how much damage these scam artists do. "At an individual level, it could be anything from a few bucks to your life savings. Increasingly, these scams are targeting corporations and the damage there is often in the millions of dollars."

"Scams are successful due to clever social engineering; we are all subject to behaving irrationally when a scam creates a sense of urgency, appeals to our curiosity or greed or makes us fearful of not responding," Troy explained. "We, the humans, remain the weakest link and that's what scammers continue to exploit."

We also reached out to Robert Nordlander, host of the Fraud Fighter Podcast, to hear his thoughts on the topic. When it comes to why these scams are so common, Robert told Bored Panda, "Scam artists use the technology that is available to the general public. Long time ago, it was mail, but today everyone uses email and texts. It just makes the results faster, and it is also cheaper to send emails/texts. When texts/cell phone calls were expensive, it wasn’t as prevalent."

When asked how people manage to fall victim to these crimes, Robert says, "No one will know the exact data except for the scam artists. But it must be profitable, because they continue to use it. The scam artists spoof links to take the victim to spoof webpages, so their personal information can be requested. These links or attachments allow the scam artists to determine which email address/phone number is active. So even if the victim doesn’t 'bite' on the scam, the scam artists know that there is activity whether answering the phone or opening the email. I have personally received emails that request my services (albeit suspicious story). However, I respond with ‘not interested’ comment, only to receive an email as if I was interested."

As a banker I can confirm I get at least 1 call a day from someone who was called and told a charge that makes absolutely no sense has gone through their account, and the rep can fix it for them but they need to first go buy 2 500 dollar gift cards. They then give the scammer all of their banking information and don't even remotely question this until right when they hang up the phone and call us and scream about how it's somehow our fault they now have to close and reopen all new accounts and can't dispute it.

It's just stupid to see how many people think they're above others and can't be scammed. Some people don't have knowledge of certain things to understand it's a scam. And sometimes sometimes the scam can fit do well with something that's going wrong in your life that you may fall for it... Let's raise awareness, not harass people who fall for this

I totally agree. Everybody knows something or has a skill that the next person doesn't. Being rude or condescending only helps the ego of the person dishing it out and ironically says more about them than the person they're insulting.

The grocery store I worked at had a policy for this. Anyone wanting to buy over a certain amount in gift cards had to do so at the customer service desk. The registers were programmed not to process over that amount. Once there, we gave them a warning about scams and some examples of the more common ones. It saved a lot of people a lot of money. Once, this little old lady came in with the guy blowing up her phone as she was in line. I asked to talk to him, and became her very angry "granddaughter". Telling him off felt so good. Lol.

I used to work at a federal credit union, and we would occasionally get people who lost thousands of dollars in gift cards (eBay, visa, amazon, etc), and we had to explain to these unfortunate people that what they did was of their own volition, and technically didn't qualify under protection with the FCU. We would try to help them, of course, but it's a shame that there's nothing to do for them once a gift card has been processed and sent off.

Lastly, Robert added, "According to the Annual Report by the ACFE, fraud is estimated to be 5% of total sales worldwide. If it is too good to be true, it is. Stay away from promises of anything free if you respond to a text or email. Same thing with being added to a sweepstakes to enter for a prize. Your chances of winning are very small if it is legitimate, but the chances of being scammed or receiving a computer virus is exponentially greater. If in doubt, hang up on any person claiming to be a representative calling you to request your personal information. Then call the 800 number on the financial institution’s website or call the number on the back of your bank card. If there really is a problem with your account, you can get direct help from your bank when you make the call."

Scammers have been around for generations. We like to think that we all know not to click suspicious links or fall prey to obviously sketchy messages, but obviously someone is doing it. Or these scams would not be so prevalent in the first place. According to a report from Truecaller, almost one third of all Americans admitted they had fallen prey to a phone scam during 2021. Among those who have been victims of phone scams, nearly one fifth of them had been swindled out of money more than once.

These phone scams have been becoming increasingly more common over the years as well, as there were only 22.1 million such victims in the US in 2017 and 59.4 million in 2021. As CNBC reports, not only have these crimes increased in number but also in the amount of money that is being taken from people. In 2020, the average loss reported by phone scam victims was $351, but by 2021, that amount skyrocketed to $502 per person.

In response to this concerning amount of scams happening in the United States, senior advisory board member at Truecaller, Clayton LiaBraaten told CNBC, “It’s very disappointing to me, and alarming that people are getting convinced to send criminals money.” But he explained that he was, unfortunately, not surprised. “These criminals are incredibly clever in the way that they manipulate people.”

When it comes to the demographics of who is more susceptible to being scammed, the most vulnerable age group was adults between 35-44 years old. Interestingly, men are also much more vulnerable than women, regardless of the age group they fall into. The Federal Communications Commission is working hard to mitigate scam calls, as they implemented requirements in the summer of 2021 for providers to provide caller ID authentication technology, but it’s not a perfect solution. Scammers are very clever at finding ways around the rules, so unfortunately, Americans are still receiving way more spam calls than they should. “They’re not going to give up,” LiaBraaten says.

If you find yourself receiving 5 scam phone calls a day, and you are worried about protecting yourself, there are ways to reduce your risk of being stolen from. A simple tip that most cybersecurity experts recommend is just never answering phone calls from unknown numbers. If it is important, they will leave a message. And if they don’t, you don’t need to worry about it. Just block the caller.

Another giveaway that someone is calling you to try to scam you is if the call is coming from an area where you don’t know anyone. If you live in California, but you suddenly receive a call from Louisiana, a state you have no ties to, chances are you don’t need to answer it. It can be hard to know when to answer calls if your business operates across the country or you live in a city with many transplants, but in general, if you don’t know who the person is, let them leave a message.

Don’t forget to block suspicious numbers after they call as well. Scammers are persistent, but if you start by blocking every number that contacts you, it will slowly reduce the number of spam calls you receive. Most mobile service providers have free software or apps that allow you to screen or block automated calls,” CNBC writer Megan Leonhardt explains. “Some, like Verizon, have software that automatically blocks some of the worst robocalls throughout their network, while others have separate options that consumers can install.” Be sure to add yourself to the National Do Not Call Registry, if you live in the United States, as well.

Another easy way to reduce calls from spammers is to limit how often you give your number out. Every time a retailer, website, or activist on the street asks for you to put your number down, consider if it is really necessary. As much as we would like to trust these companies or individuals, our information can always be sold and distributed without our knowledge if we don’t hold onto it tightly. In reference to the extremely high amounts of money scam artists have recently collected from Americans, LiaBratten says, “This is high enough at $500 a pop that people should be treating their phone numbers like they treat their bank account numbers.”

Scam phone calls are not a uniquely American issue, though. In fact, the United States ranks 20th on the list of countries receiving the most spam calls annually. According to Truecaller, the country that is plagued by the most spam calls, by far, is Brazil. In 2021, Brazilians received on average 32.9 spam calls a month. The country with the second highest scam call rates was Peru, with the average person receiving about half as many calls as citizens in Brazil. What is even more shocking is that, during their deep dive into spam calls, Truecaller determined that one single spammer in India made over 202 million spam calls over the course of one year. “That’s over 664,000 people that were disturbed by spam calls every day and 27,000 people every hour – from just one phone number,” their report explains.

Yes it is very unrealistic threath, but there are a lot of people with a very low iq, and they could be scared for their life, and that is horrible. And people with anxiety issues, even if they are 99.9999% sure this is just some ridiculous scam, they might keep worrying about that other 0.0001% chance.

So how did online and phone scams snowball into the monstrosity that they currently are? I know for a fact that when I was in high school, I was not receiving the same amount of calls about my car’s extended warranty or made-up charities begging me for donations. According to Walt Hickey at Business Insider, there are a few reasons these scams have been able to flourish. First, he credits technological advancements for this plague. It has become far too easy for scam artists to create countless numbers of robocalls that can’t be traced. He also notes that scammers can make a lot of money off their victims, so it is an enticing “career path” for those lacking a conscience. Lastly, Walt writes that it is incredibly easy for people to get away with these crimes, due to a lack of legislation concerning them and under-funded law enforcement groups. Even if they are seen as a serious issue, they are a beast to confront.

So, long-story short, a phone number is needed so a 6-digit code sends it to that number, so you would be able to type it in. They were going to use that number to scam them to get access to their info. You're welcome :)

This one is almost certainly fake BUT PROBABLY DOES HAPPEN FROM TIME TO TIME... People oversell their properties all the time. Almost never to THIS extent but... I mean my own personal landlord shows the giant recreational area on the top of our building as a selling point to get people to see the apts there... but then tell the Super of the building (who happens to be me) to uh... not mention that it will never be open to access by the tenants. Oh IT'S THERE... I've been up there. But he has no intentions of ever allowing tenants to go up there. Pretty scummy. Feels weird working for the guy as my side-hustle sometimes...

Especially since they're freaking about 5G and they're perfectly fine with Wi-Fi, even thought he frequency bands overlap - 5g has two frequency ranges, one from 450MHz to 6GHz and a second from 24.25GHz to 52.6GHz, while Wi-Fi uses either 2.4GHz or 5GHz... And that's without mentioning that all existing high-speed microwave data links are using frequencies in the 36.0–40.0 GHz range and older systems like 3G and 4g were 1.8-2.5GHz and 4G 2-8GHz respectively.

ALL 5G CONSPRIACY THERORISTS ARE HOPELESS. Someone had to say it. It's mean to say I know.... but uh.... it follows the phrase "why are you booing, I'm right" ; pretty closely... that being said, we just need a few upvotes to get this to 69 upvotes so someone needs to help out with that.

I really want to bust that thing open and see what's inside. I think the Total Shield people got busted. There was one that was "plug in" that someone took apart, and it was just a cheap off the shelf remote power relay with a sticker on it. The 5G scammers made a killing!

Walt goes on to explain just how profitable phone scamming can be. "They work," Aaron Foss, founder of Nomorobo, a company that blocks spam calls, told Business Insider. "The response rates are abysmal, a tenth of a percent response rate. But the risk of getting caught is so, so low, and the rewards are so high." For example, 125,000 minutes of robocalls from Message Communications Inc can be purchased for only $875. If each receiver of these calls stays on the line for an average of 3 seconds, that $875 funds 2.5 million calls. And if only one out of 10,000 calls is successful, one hour of these robocalls can bring in $1,750 in profits.

It's amazing how greed can blind a person to reality. Makes me think of how my dad came to me all exited he won a 300 giftcard from a mayor on line shop but needed my help with the form. I had to remind him that he never had an account there so there would be no way he could have won anything. He was so disappointed

    Aureliana

It's often not greed, it's a very real need for money. $20k when retired & elderly doesn't last long. It's the same reason people who don't have disposable income and live paycheck to paycheck play the lottery, in the hopes that they'll finally have a chance to breathe and live a good life rather than working themselves to the bone at multiple jobs and praying that they (or their families) never get truly ill because they can't afford treatment. It's even worse for elderly people who either cannot work because of their age/health or because no one hires them, so the idea that they can invest their life savings and get extra back as compensation for "helping" someone sounds like a great opportunity if they don't truly understand scams.

Apparently, phone carriers are also not particularly interested in stopping these calls because they often cannot prove for a fact that any illegal activity is taking place. They are also fearful of blocking too many calls, leaving customers missing important information. “A pharmacy may contact a patient about their COVID-19 vaccine appointment with an automated call, and if a carrier blocked that there would be hell to pay,” Walt writes. “Carriers avoid interfering in gray areas, and will only block a gateway carrier or caller when given ample grounding to do so, often by federal action against a bad actor.”

There was some YouTube video explaining why the scammers use such stupidly obvious stories. That is simply the quickest way to make sure that you have somebody who is dumb enough to buy the most obvious scam. Rather than work on a scam that would convince the average person, find a n easy scam that only a moron would believe. Then send out such an email to 10,000 people, and you know that anybody who believes you is one of those morons.

I'm sorry but I'm so tired of people with their support animals who are clearly not meant to be support animals. Support peacocks and support alligators. The fact that you had thousands of dollars in the first place in order to buy 'support' monkeys instead of putting that money into therapy or something if you needed some kind of help makes me so unempathetic.

Wow a real human female. - One of these days I'm going to learn to just have a bot respond to another bot just to create an unending loop and possibly cost the sender some kind of data charges (which I'm pretty sure are still a thing in India and Nigeria where most of these come from)

I lost over 4 btc investing on a chain platform I didn't know what to do because I was unable to withdraw my profit, I believed that I would be able to cover the debt with my profits and I thought there won't be even a chance to get my investment back. Until I contacted David Moore after seeing positive reviews about him 4days back on this platform , I got in touch with him and he gave an explanation of how the process would look like and what exactly we need to put in place for this to work out, which I did and followed all his instructions to my greatest surprise I confirmed the payment of my recovered funds to my crypto wallet, he has been really helpful to me, I bet you all should contact him on email: davidmoore9951 @ gma il,com he’s genuine

    Foxinamug

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I believe it's where they're trying to access the person's account on something (say WhatsApp) and they press the option to verify your account by phone, and if the person gives them the code, the scammer now has access to their account. I think there's also a variant where they set up a Google Voice account attached to the person's number, which they can use to scam call other people, and then if authorities got the details of the Google Voice to potentially prosecute the scammers for fraud/whatever, it would appear to link back to the innocent person instead of the scammer (meaning at the minimum the investigation is muddied, but worst case only the innocent person is traceable)

If I understand it correctly, it's like this: On reddit, if you have lots of karma (upvotes), the spam filter lets your comments through by default. This means that spammers are interested in getting accounts with high karma. How exactly spammers make money from spamming I don't know, but nevertheless high-karma accounts on reddit are apparently quite desirable! To the point that "karma mining" is a thing... bots will copy snippets of other comments with the goal of getting upvotes... It's so much a thing that there are *other* bots on reddit that flag copied comments...

I got a new phone number and a few months later I decided to sign up for ubereats, when I did I found out somebody had created an uber account with my phone number, and when I contacted uber they told me they couldn't help me because only the account holder could access information about the account. Like, wtf. I spent about a year harassing them about it and eventually they fixed it, though they never admitted to what had actually happened.

If someone else has used one of your accounts, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS close that account as fast as you can. Cancel your card, your subscription, your service, whatever. It is good self finance policy to review your account info (ie, the online records of your expenses and expenditures) once a week for each account you have. And try not to have more than 2 or 3, so that things don't get crazy. It takes less than 5 minutes to skim the list of each account. You are checking to make sure that you recognize all the transactions. The sooner you catch fraudulent activity, the better. Then you can take action immediately. It will be less financial damage for you, and things will be fresher in your mind....including the names and faces of any individuals who may have been involved in helping themselves to your money. Then you can set up new accounts, etc.

Except they specifically said the check cleared, as in, did not bounce. He also claims to have paid his rent with it, so the funds were already in his account, no take-backsies. Either he got one of the most incompetent scammers in history, or the whole story is BS.

So the reddit responses were actually giving good advice, most were concerned that the cameras were hacked so that they could monitor the household. Others suggesting that it could be that their credit card has been cloned/stolen and the purchased item was sent to the billing address. Either way, it's probably to contact your nearest police cyber crimes department.

"Authorised signature" instead of the account holders name??? No watermark, hologram or seal (I'm not sure if that's a thing in other countries)? And I'm sure there is a reason it just under £8k difference in the value. Oh, and who still uses cheques???

    Bobby

It's meant to look like a business check, and plenty of businesses still use checks. Just had an insurance claim that was paid out by check instead of direct deposit(I think they do this because they can claim to have settled with you but still make interest off your money until the check clears)

No, what the scammer will do is once the recipient deposits the check, scammer asks for the difference in the amount to be sent back, in this case around 8 grand, so it's under the minimum amount the authorities will investigate. Then, the scammer will stop payment at the issuing bank & they will pull the full amount back from the recipient's account, putting them in the hole for the original amount of the check PLUS the 8 grand they returned to the scammer.

    J

Good guess but no. Credit card debt can be erased through bankruptcy (in the US), and a gift card is essentially cash (from the store perspective), so a gift card would be a total loss for the store if someone filed bankruptcy on their credit card debt. Product worth has a different “loss” calculation.

This guy is trying to break in to your Google account. When someone attempts to log in to your account using unknown device, Google will ask for a verification number they sent to your phone just to confirm it is you and not some scammer that acquired your password somehow. And this is said scammer asking you for that number. If you've actually received this code from 22000, you should probably change your Google account password.

Top response on reddit comes from user AlertThinker: It's an auction where half the people are "in" on the scam and the other half are innocent victims. They'll have one or two "real" items, like a patek philippe watch, or Cartier, but then everything else is fake or counterfeit. But like gambling, the innocent people will want to bid on everything and will win some fake stuff.

So many things wrong with that ID!! We don’t use that type of ID…EVER. It says he is Air Force yet he is in an Army uniform, says he is Infantry yet Air Force has no infantry. There is no such thing as a deployed ID card. There is no status called “regimental combatant of 36th Battalion”. And of course there is the metric vs imperial measurements that everyone has mentioned. A true service member will recognize this in a heart beat and call him out on it if they ever saw him in person doing Stolen Valor c**p. This is coming from a real retired us army veteran that served 22 years.

Stolen Valor act makes it illegal to claim to have earned certain awards, it does not cover claiming to have been in the military. Besides it was deemed unconstitutional anyway

The scammer is saying they’ll have their daughter meet up with the seller to collect the item—most likely because this will be their excuse for wanting to “send the money electronically” as the daughter doesn’t have the money, she’s just being sent to collect the item.

OKAY soo Ive legitimately been deployed in a status where we could not do video chats due to security, and Ive heard about this scam a few times, so Ill break down whats wrong here. First of all, that is not what an official document will ever look like coming from the US gov’t in any capacity. Second, if you can’t videochat, they aren’t gonna be okay with you sending a picture of anything to a civilian. Third, the wording on that “document” is laughable. As for how it worked- we were flat out ordered not to do it and had already signed an NDA for what we were doing. 100% of our phone calls were monitored and we were not to discuss anything regarding any part of where we were, what we were doing there, or our job. There was no paper handout saying not to do it, it was known that doing any of those would have you pulled from the unit extremely quickly, and you would be sent home. Any further punishment would be conducted stateside.

If you are talking to a “soldier” overseas that you have never met, odds are, it is a scam. Anyone in a position where they can’t do video chat or other things due to security will never discuss that stuff with you. In fact, my girlfriend at the time was given one warning- “I can’t discuss any aspect of where I am or what I am doing for work. Do not bring up the subject.” A couple of times she did ask me something too specific and I immediately hung up. Security in those jobs is not a joke, and anyone with any sense isn’t going to risk that. TLDR; Its a scam, don’t talk to people overseas that you don’t know in person already.

Scam. Who knows where they got your information from, but the general gist is that they'll send you some piece of junk in an Amazon box then make vague legal threats in an attempt to get you to "reimburse" them.

I've been receiving automated Amazon scam calls. After the first call where I gave my name and then stopped when they asked for address and phone number and asked if it was a scam and got hung up on, i contacted Amazon through Amazon and they advised they will NEVER call you; they email or message in Amazon. Actually just had a call yesterday and when I pressed to speak to someone it was crazy loud in the background and when they asked why I called I told them they should know because they called me and they hung up immediately.

It is very easy to get someone name and address details. The rest of the scam is easy, send some cheap shite, ask for the package back and demand compensation for the "other packages" under the threat of police involvement. Amazon accounts are notoriously weak, so if comes from Amazon you should change your password asap.

Well - you can agree and have them waste money on overnighting ... say you didn't get the cheque - repeat a few times then just tell them you know it's a scam - you house got burnt down ... anything. I don't know how much overnighting costs but making them do it a couple of times has got to p**s them off.
