You basically agree to be bound by their rules if you buy a house that is governed by one.

And to be clear, you also know when buying a house if it’s under an HOA too. So you choose to buy into the system. I’ve seen HOAs that just charge a fee to run and keep up a neighborhood pool that only members can use. And I’ve seen HOAs take you to court if your lawn isn’t green enough. Runs the gambit.

Sometimes a HOA is for the good, it might help having a nice neighbourhood, it helps with attractiveness, and usually helps building and maintaining a safe and healthy environment. Some room for personal touches should be allowed IMHO, but general guidelines about visible appearance is not all bad. Like police for ppl, don't run around naked in public all the time :D #lol (If you do want to run naked all the time, or not willing to comply with some society rules,... it's okay, maybe live in a nice private area in the country side or something.) *)pride flags should be allowed though. (But permanently painting the outside of your house in unicorn colors with stars and grafiti, I understand ppl might object.) <3 all the best!

They are awful. You pay money to a group and give them the right to sell your home, if you can't pay them.

They have way too much power! You Never really own your home. If your home is totally paid for but you fall behind in HOA dues, even if it’s only $20, they can take your home. And they have. Some are completely without a soul!

Depends on the flag, a flag like the nazi or isis one shouldn't be allowed because it encourages people to gather and impose their own monkey laws on people, which will eventually cause chaos and devolve a previously civilised society. Altough they do serve as a sign to stay away from that person

People seem to forget that freedom of speech protects you from the GOVERNMENT - the.government can't silence you. Private property in a private HOA - that the person chose to live in - does not fall into that category. Absolutely I don't agree with HOA's and in particular this HOA and their rules, but it's also why I chose to buy a house without an HOA.

I'm thinking they would let you get away with it once then quickly write a new rule to keep you from doing it again.

Honestly if it's in the United States and it looks like it probably is they probably have rules against displaying any flag except the United States flag and possibly the state flag. This of course also bans novelty flags holiday flags collegiate flags and so on. That is all perfectly legal so that's probably how they get around it. It's technically not discrimination if no one is allowed to do it.
