The two things I vividly recall from working in retail are the customers and the managers. But not because they were good. No no, because they taught me how to smile while my mind was repeating "Fu** you."
Of course, there was the cleaning of the floor, the stocking of the shelves, and the ringing of the register but these responsibilities were the easy part. The human factor was where the misery was usually at. And if it wasn't for my colleagues, I don't know if I would have lasted for as long as I did.
So I was very glad to come across r/RetailHell. The subreddit acts like an online support center where workers from the industry come together to both vent and celebrate their painful and proud moments on the job. Sometimes, just the fact that someone is listening is enough.

It Do Be Facts Tho
I used to be a store manager of a shop in a mall in Connecticut. Any time we had warnings of blizzard conditions, I would close my shop down and pay the fine later. There was absolutely no reason for my employees to risk their lives to sell high priced goods!
I walked 2 miles in the snow to open up the store. Never got a thank you. We opened at 5:00 am.
I was supposed to get special training for a promotion the same day a huge storm hit. I got in a car accident, refused medical attention, and showed up to work 2 hours late with a big bruise on my forehead and a bunch of blood on my shirt from a bloody nose and they took away my promotion for not being serious enough about the job to be on time. Because if I was serious about it I would have left extra early to make it on time.
I wonder if they were serious enough about wanting to not have all of their teeth knocked out by a tire iron because if they were, they wouldn't have pulled some stupid crap like that!
Load More Replies...not just minimum wage bosses saying this anyone working in production and such too ,because god forbid we shut the plant down for a day
Worked for Dillard's in Florida when I was in my early 20s. My boss expected us to come in when a Category 4 hurricane was going to start blowing into the state. Needless to say I got written up for calling in EVEN THOUGH the mall ended up closing after an hour of being open because of the weather. Retail is crazy.
Turns out most "essential services" (drivers, clerks, grocers, cashiers, delivery people, couriers and messengers) are also minimum wage jobs. Well done, capitalism...
I remember once in Pennsylvania where it was so bad, they closed all roads. Made it a finable offense. About two hours later I get a call from boss saying they were "allowing" us to take the day off. Edit: FEMA uses Waffle House closing as a measure of the situation.
So... a couple years ago. We had a massive cold snap in my state. -30 before windchill(fahrenheit for those concerned, still cold, but not as bad as if it were celcius i think). half the state shut down. I work retail, my company's basic response was: "Sucks to be you." And to make matters worse, so many freaking idiots came out to shop that day. risking life and limb for a damn video game/toy! I mean, I can understand if it was food or medicine. But that? wait until tomorrow! the cold snap was breaking that next morning!
Dutch Supermarket Chain Opens Slower 'Chat Checkouts' In An Effort To Combat Loneliness Among The Elderly
They have a lot of really great social programs in the Netherlands. They also have a program where they pair up school kids with elderly people and they do different activities together and learn from each other. We really need more of a multi-generational approach to communities.
There was a program in Calgary that matched university students with elderly people living in their homes--there was extensive interviewing, but it was a great idea. I don't know if it continued during the pandemic.
Load More Replies...This is actually a great idea. I used to work in retail and the amount of people, especially the elderly would try and keep chatting even when you are serving another customer. They would chat to you like you were a friend and not a stranger.
The sad fact is - they know you are a stranger. They know it's akward. They still do it. That gives you an idea of how overwhelmingly shitty loneliness feels.
Load More Replies...Indeed, but these checkouts aren't just for the elderly, anyone can chat there.
Load More Replies...I like this! Older people are very underappreciated nowadays so I absolutely love this concept!
I would use those even if I'm not old, not even lonely, but just to chat with those waiting
Actually you can do that in any queue at any supermarket. It's allowed to talk to fellow humans :)

"This subreddit is very easy to mod," one of them told Bored Panda. "The community is really supportive and very little policing needs to be done, that's probably because the majority of members work retail, and anything insulting or rude to employees will be downvoted to oblivion, so it's largely self-governing."
"That said, we pretty much just ban people for breaking the rules," another mod added. "None of that negotiating a timeframe and then having to ban them again in a month. If you're [a jerk], we just ban you."
I Love This
I don't wait until it's my turn, I will speak up for the worker, NO ONE deserves to be treated poorly when all they're trying to do is their job.
I was behind a lady at a store once and she did not have anything that she needed. She didn't have her store credit card (which would have gotten her a discount), she didn't have ID (which the cashier could have used to find her store credit card info). So, when I walked up, I said "Don't worry, I have all my s**t together." Later that day, I forgot to take my wallet to another store and I said "Oh no! I am that lady!"
I will add that the lady wasn't nasty about anything, just "wildly unprepared" for her trip to the store.

Absolutely I was behind a rude AF woman, on her phone AND bitching at the poor girl behind the counter. I leaned down and quietly said "Pay for your shyte and get the f**k out of this store. She turned around really quick stopped dead and looked up......way up ... I just stood there smiling. I'm kinda tall for a chick lol.

Load More Replies...Oh I always wonder of it's OK for me to do that or if I should mind my own business. Noted.
I was in a situation where I NEEDED to get a computer accessory because I worked from home, and the girl who helped me in the store was literally on her first day there. She was probably 16. Her DAD showed up and chided her for not knowing what to do, which only made the poor girl nervous. I made it a point to tell her that she was doing great and that I really appreciated her help. IDK what gets into some customers (and parents).
Truth
Too true. 9 times out of 10 the manager caves and gives the customer what they want, despite it being official policy not to, and it's the customer making that face. And then you think to yourself, "what's the prison sentence for murder, again?"
Load More Replies...I once had so annoying a customer who finally asked to see the manager, I said I'd go see if they were free to come out. I was the manager, went to the back, grabbed a drink, sat down for a few minutes, then walked back out and asked how I could help. The reward was priceless, mouth open, no words.
Security had taken this dirty little old man aside and talked to him after he grabbed my ass. Dirty Little Old Man asks to speak to the manager, and the manager was called. "Your employee threatened me!" Manager:Did you say that? Security: I would never say that. I could lose my job if I said that. Manager: Then why does this customer claim you did? Security: Maybe he was upset at being told he had to leave the store before I called the police. Groping sales associates isn't acceptable no matter how old you are. Oh, make sure we save the video from [time] for law enforcement. Manager: Sir, why are you still in my store?
Once I had a customer who was trying to get a refund for an item that was exempt from the return policy and I said no they asked for a manager as they do and when I was telling the manager about it they were like your right let’s go talk to them. We got their and before they said a word he was giving them a refund. I was pissed off the rest of the day and I asked him what the hell was he doing
That kind of crap only leads to employees gaming the system and telling the customer, "I can't give you a refund because it's against the store's policy, but my manager rolls over better than a well-trained Labrador Retriever, so would you like to talk to them?"
Load More Replies...I loved my old music store manager back in the 90s. I’d heard his response to customers who wanted to return unreturnable items enough times that I could say it verbatim myself. One customer was being a jerk and rudely demanded to see the manager. I said I’d get him, but then paused and said, “Just so you know, he’s going to tell you exactly what I told you.” I called him, and he came out, listened to the customer for a moment, and then said word for word what I did. The customer got flustered, snatched his open, scratched CD with no receipt off the counter and stormed out. It was beautiful.
International student told me he wouldn't to a woman, and wanted to speak to my boss. I ask Renae to come speak to him. Before she even makes it out of her office he states that he wants to speak to the provost. I call that office and ask to speak to Carolyn. He is seething, and wants to speak to the registrar. OK. Call that office, Joann....he screams and walks out. My all time favorite work story! I forgot to mention that because he refused to follow rules for Int'l students, I had so many holds on him, he couldn't pee without my permission!
Too Accurate
"Hey! What costs this???" *Proceeds to stay in front of that little paper, all alone over the product. Name, price and everything* "Is that the price for this???" Happens surprisingly often.
As a customer who has asked this question it's because retailer stickers stock shït where the f**k that they want to or the store's sneaky a$$ way of making you purchase their overstocked higher cost. I can't count how many times I've seen something on the shelf for one price, check the name labeled on the price, THEN get to the register and it's a much higher price. When I inform them of the price and label they go back then come back and say, oh, that's for the lesser oz whatever ' okay, I want that one, oh we are out of that oz😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Load More Replies...My very first job at 15 was at subway sandwiches. Our power went out so I put a sign on the door saying we were temporarily closed. By the time the third customer rapped on the door I asked my boss what the heck was happening. He told me we could write “go f*ck yourself” on the door and they’d still try to get in. He was my fav.
At a large retail big box electronics store, a customer was bitching to me about the return policy customer service told him. He said it wasn't printed anywhere before you buy the product. "It's on the back of your receipt, it's on the poster sized sign in every main aisle, it's on this smaller pamphlet that we are made to stick in the bag with every purchase over $20, it's on nearly every display in every every department, the guy who sold you the item has to quote it to you before ringing you up, and it's on the giant 20 foot tall sign on the wall behind me."
Used to do janitorial work. We would strip and relax floors on a regular schedule (no surprises in the timing) We would put up signs... Wet Wax No Entry. Came back from lunch to see high-heel tracks going straight through the wax, followed by a slip-and- skid mark with a bum-print. Person responsible for the tracks comes to yell at us, we point out the signs. Lady is an English teacher at the facility.
I'm guilty of this if I'm shopping in big stores. I have horrible anxiety and being in crowded places makes it much much worse so if I'm in a crowded store my anxiety makes me like the dumbest person. There will be a big sign saying "kids jeans $10" and even though I see it my brain won't comprehend and I have to ask for help. It's the worst. I'm the worst.
I always feel stupid, too, because it's so obvious once I ask. But my brain doesn't process it.
Load More Replies...If you hit them on the head with the sign it might work though! Haven't tried it! Who wants to experiment?
I have found some tactics that work. First one is if you can make a visual sign without any words. Like For example if you want to show there are fish for sale here, then just have a big picture of a fish. The second one works even better, put big words in bold with exclamation marks!!! DONT LOOK TO THE LEFT!!!, Then trust me when i say.. EVERYONE! Suddenly looks left and sees what im advertising, and they will read that second sign or see what it was you wanted them to see.
Too real! We have a large yellow sign on the door not to leave donations there. Guess what people leave there?
"The community itself is really positive, funny, and insightful about working in retail," the first mod continued. "Lots of people letting their internal monologues out where in work they have to keep a smile on even behind a mask."
"The most popular themes are humorous — we have a good sense of humor here. In retail, you have to or you just wouldn't survive."
However, it's not just sunshine and days off. As the second mod explained, if you dig a little deeper, you realize it's a bunch of tired people trying to get a break from life.

It's not always the case. I'm in gastronomy. In my first 4-5 years I was changing jobs yearly. Not because I didn't fit them, but because of I wanted to try different kitchen-styles from family restaurant through ship-cruise and amusement-park-style big kitchen till hotel-bistro and fine dining.

True Af
When I worked retail, a friend of mine gave me a button the read, "Thank you for turning a simple transaction into a bizarre ritual." Still have it.
You get that from tech support jobs too. Them: "I have two buttons, OK or Cancel. Which one should I press?" Me: "Do you want to cancel?" Them: "NO!!" Me: "So...."
Sadly, this works two ways: the number of occasions is too many to count when I'll ask a question, perfectly reasonable and carefully phrased, of a shop or some branch of customer service and they simply don't LISTEN! Sometimes, it is necessary to ask in three parts, for example, and you might just get an answer to the first part, so have to ask the other two again. You then get an answer to just the second part, if you're lucky... So next time you think you're on the receiving end of a 'customer from hell', just pause for a moment and try to appreciate if you addressed their query properly.
There are no stupid questions, but there sure is an abundance of inquisitive idiots.
I worked in a fabric store, countless times was asked "how much fabric do I need to make [item]. When I brought in a copy of a cheat sheet from a sewing class, they then argued with me.
I answer my business phone with "This is Laura". 30% of the time the first question is "Is this Laura". No..no it's not."

If it wasn't so sad, it would be kinda funny they're yelling about "not taking their freedom away", and then yell at you for taking your freedom of choice to get vaccinated (and getting to keep your job in this case I guess).

Wowies. Had to put these up at my restaurants; there's nothing like a grown man spitting in my face and throwing racial slurs at my partners, after being told to wear a mask... how dare you accuse us of "treading on your freedom", when you come into our owned business, don't abide by our rules, then get angry that the only female (me) is the manager, and you can't have me fired for protecting employees and guests... happens 1x per month at least.
I don't understand why anti-maskers attack people wearing them. Mind your damn business!
That IS painfully depressing. If a customer is so offended by a staff member being concerned for their own personal safety (not to mention concern for their customers, since masks work both ways), then they are more than welcome to f**k right off and shop somewhere else (the second part being optional). God, people suck.
I deliver for a liquor store and when people berate the staff management has determined they must be intoxicated and therefore we are not allowed to sell them anymore booze
I don't understand how masks can still be optional in some areas! In my country they are obligatory for more than a year now even outdoors
Because in the U.S. they've politicized it. So, stupidly, in states where Republicans decide mandates, no masks required, and the opposite for Democratic states. I honestly don't know what a contagious virus has to do with politics, but here we are...
Load More Replies...“Why are you still wearing a mask?” “Because you’re not.” “Can I speak to your manager?
I can't understand people. If they want the freedom not to wear masks, why do they try to impose their choice on those people who have decided to wear one?
A large part of this emotional exhaustion comes from indifferent bosses. Zeynep Ton, a Professor of the Practice at the MIT Sloan School of Management, whose research focuses on how organizations can design and manage their operations in a way that satisfies employees, customers, and investors simultaneously, thinks the main reason why retailers underinvest in labor is that it's often their largest controllable expense.
"[Labor] can account for more than 10% of revenues—a considerable level in an industry with low profit margins," Ton explained in Harvard Business Review. "In addition, many retailers see labor as a cost driver rather than a sales driver and therefore focus on minimizing its costs. Accordingly, they often evaluate store managers on whether they meet monthly (or weekly) targets for payroll as a percentage of sales. These managers don't have much control over sales (they almost never make decisions on merchandise mix, layout, price, or promotions), but they do have a fair amount of control over payroll. So when sales decrease, they immediately reduce staffing levels. The pressure to reduce payroll expenses is so high that store managers at several large chains, including Walmart, have been widely reported to have forced employees to work off-the-clock, paying them for fewer hours than they put in."
"You Are Not At A Level Of Skill That Deserves This Wage"
The people who call them unskilled jobs aren't even capable of working them.
Common myth. I work as an engineer now, but I did all of those jobs when I was young. Don't make this assumption about all bosses. However it is easy to spot the ones who didn't. They are the ones treating you this way. Some of us remember it and appreciate everyone for the job they do. Think about it. What would shut down our plant the fastest? The answer is if the janitors stopped doing their job. Not me and my job, but the janitor. I think about this every time I see them, and I thank them for doing the worst job in the place.
Load More Replies...the term used is "low skilled" which is a technical terms for easily able to replace, further 6 of those in there pics are considered skilled jobs. But it isnt used to justify wages, it is used because if a job can be retrained in under 3 days, the technical term is "low skilled" hard to justify higher wages if you can be replaced easily and quickly.
Your wage is based upon how hard you are to replace, not how hard you work. People need to learn this.
Load More Replies...Some of the hardest jobs in the world pay the least, and most of us wouldn't last a week standing in on our feet all day, moving heavy stuff all day, or bending up and down all day. Yes, they deserve better. The problem is that even though doing those jobs well is hard work and takes skill and focus, those jobs require little to no education or training to start, and there's a long line of people at the door (most of whom honestly can't actually do it) who are willing to give it a shot. It's just supply and demand. Doesn't make it right. That's just how it is.

ACROSS THE NATION. I had to be there the next day and the aftermath was nasty. And then the card readers went down for half that day triggering a lot of panic.
Also if it looks like chaos when you clock out for lunch, if you have the option to leave the store, take it. Otherwise other employees and managers will find you in the break room trying to relax and demand something.
Absolutely, there is no way you can enjoy an actual "break" in the "break room". Just leave and they will figure it out on their own because there is no other choice then to grow up and do it.

However, according to a new analysis of more than 1.4 million Glassdoor reviews, a toxic culture is 10.4 times more likely to contribute to an employee leaving than compensation. That culture includes failing to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion; unethical behavior; and workers feeling disrespected, the report said.
"Compensation is at best a moderate predictor of attrition," Donald Sull, a co-founder of analytics firm CultureX, which performed the analysis, told Bloomberg.
The research focused on reviews posted between April and September 2021 for large for-profit companies that employ roughly 25% of private-sector workers.
The numbers revealed that apparel retailers are losing the highest number of workers. Retail employees had an average attrition rate of 19% during that six-month period, and retail employees quit at a rate three times higher than airline workers, medical device makers, and health insurance employees.

I worked in restaurants all of my life. Some customers said that it was an easy job. I beg to differ.
The first moderator of r/RetailHell believes this toxicity is so abundant because "current culture allows it."
"Retail and other front line workers have not benefited yet from the change in cultural behavior that we have seen over the last 20 years, and part of that cultural problem comes from retail itself. It allows customers a lot of room to abuse employees because, at the end of the day, the customer spends money," the mod said. "These are my views only ... but I'm 21 years in retail."
The second mod said they don't think that customers are mindfully misbehaving. "It's not that they want to be [jerks] to the workers, it's that they literally can't see outside their bubble and recognize that it's another human being stocking those shelves. I really think they often don't take the time to mention that. You'll see that in stories from here. A customer is being a complete a***ole, but the worker shows emotion like crying, and suddenly they realize what they've done. I've seen workers talk about de-escalation methods that speak to this very issue. When you get them to realize that you're a human, rather than simply a conduit to donuts, their attitude often changes."
"This isn't always the case, and some people just suck," the mod highlighted. "I'm willing to bet most of those people suck outside of a retail setting, too. Sometimes retail is simply society's first line of defense against [jerks]."

We had closed. People were vacuuming the departments, lights were out in most areas, the manager had counted out the tills. Still, this dude kept wandering around the department. "You aren't allowed to tell him we've closed" says management. Another half hour and it's just me and one manager there. I give up. Clock out. Tell the guy, "I can't tell you to go home because we are closed. But I will tell you that there is literally no way you can buy anything here until we open tomorrow. The registers are shut down. The computers for online ordering are shut down. Anything I could tell you about the product you could go home and research in great depth between the time you get out and the time we open tomorrow. But mostly, you can't buy anything here because I'm going home. It's more than an hour since my shift was supposed to end and standing here watching you isn't paying well."
One time I was walking the store tell the last minute shoppers we were closing and this guy was like "oh really, that's great" and kept walking through the store. I my little world, the mugs should either be in alphabetical order or spelling out swear words, there is no in-between.

Not true. You read stories about people in Japan for example, that work 70+ hours and kill themselves over the stress. Can happen anywhere, unfortunately.

I told my mum this and because she's smart and knows our rights, she educated me. The next shift I arrived just in time to put my bag in my locker and sign in before I started my rostered shift. My manager confronted me in the staff room about being late. Well I said it is against the law to expect us to work and not pay us. So unless your paying for that 15 minutes, I will only start when my rostered shift is. He actually decided to pay everyone that extra 15 mins. Our little extra time was more important than the little extra wages he had to pay.
I literally spent 14hrs at my job working a double and when the last table was sent and Im like alright that’s it im gonna clean up and leave. My manager is like your not leaving yet are you? Im like yes that’s exactly what Im doing. Im going on 14 hrs and I refuse to make it 15. And I left. F**k any job that puts you in a position to work a 15hr shift like it’s normal and then tries to make you feel guilty for leaving.
You should have seen the face my boss made when I told her that I was going to be out of town on a holiday weekend and wouldn't be in to work on Sunday. I just want to explain, it is a Monday through Friday 9:00 to 5:00 kind of job. It was a holiday weekend, so we would be off 3 days instead of two. She looked utterly shocked that I would make plans for the weekend instead of being available to come in simply to get things done before the end of the month.
Used to work for Walmart, oh, about a millennia ago (actually, around 1994-1995 😁) and our manager would make us clock out after our shift but go back out to the floor to work for another hour or two. We all knew it was illegal, but most of the staff was under 30 and didn't feel secure saying anything. Of course, later on this same manager went on to murder his mistress, a fellow Walmart associate, so maybe keeping our mouths shut was a good thing... 😳
We've Had These Kind Of Karens Right
Ha, Sunday after church service was always the worst. Was* because I waitered 20 years ago.
That's exactly what my daughter said when she worked as a server.
Load More Replies...Years ago I worked at a grocery store & we had to work some Sundays. A lady came in after church and told me that I was going to hell because I was working on a Sunday. I told her that I HAD to work on to keep my job, but you don't have to be here. Everyone in line cheered! lol
That's just the worst. If she's really that worked up about keeping the Sabbath, she shouldn't be shopping herself!!
Load More Replies...Yep... Waiting tables on Sunday lunch shifts were the worst. And then you get those truly special c*cks*ckers who leave you some religious tract made to look like a folded $20 bill instead of a tip! Yeah, my landlord will probably be about as motivated to accept this for rent as I am to accept Jeebus right now given your example of Christian charity. Nice sales pitch for your Mythological Figure Appreciation society there, a$$h0le!
Those folded bill tracts used to be $10, aholes keeping up with inflation.

"Because I can worship Satan any day of the week".
Load More Replies...First, they have to be a ¢unt to everyone trying to leave the parking lot. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than "Christians" in their rush to leave the church parking lot.
The best one ever was, "I can't leave a tip because I put so much in offering." I had to say, "Ah...that's okay." All the while thinking, ya dumb b, I'm an atheist, why should your ignorance screw me?
The church crowd always makes sure to stop by my store after service to hit up the craft aisle. I guarantee you, after 12 years of experience, nobody— and i mean nobody, trashes the craft aisle like the church crowd. I don't know why, but they're the messiest, most inconsiderate group of shoppers.
When Those Certain Customers Are Walking Towards The Door...
We had a few customers that everyone dreaded serving and cringed if we saw their faces in the shop. We even had a dibs system where the last person to say dibs had to serve the customer.
I worked somewhere that the only warning sign that the well known annoying customer had entered was that all the sales associates would suddenly scatter and hide.

Yep, one restaurant I worked in opened at 10:00am, and anyone that would be waiting outside the door for us to unlock it, was immediately pre-judged, and was guaranteed to be annoying

I'll put a shirt on an empty arm so people won't run into the arm and get hurt. I leave the dressing very neat and tidy if I can't bring out the clothes. I re-package shoes. I look the cashier in the eye and say please and thank you. I play a game to see if I can make the workers smile or laugh. None of this is hard...just take a minute to be nice to people.

I haven’t worked in a restaurant in almost three decades now but I STILL have nightmares about them and it’s always the same theme. I for some reason show up late to shift to find I’ve got a full section and all tables have been sitting for a long time. Mad rush to catch-up so I don’t lose my job. That and my teeth falling out. Hate those dreams. 😝

I asked the parents twice to control their kids and they refused so I called the cops on them and they were arrested for disorderly conduct. Mama ain't got no time for that s**t!
I was once yelled at by an woman because I kindly asked her child to come out from under the round revolving clothes rack that was full & he was tugging on the clothes from below causing the whole thing to wobble. This was around 1995 in Columbus, Ohio. I sincerely hope when he became a teen he gave her conniption fits!!
Had a woman come into my computer store with two young kids who ran around, kicked the walls, and tried to climb shelving. ME (kindly): I really need you to control your children. HER (bewildered): How am I supposed to do that? ME (slightly less kindly): Uhhh... hold their hands? [SIDEBAR: She ended up buying an $1,800 computer package, which was directly paid for by a government assistance vocational program, and then tried to return it for cash.]

I just had to call security the other day because a visitor was physically THREATENING our staff because he didn’t want to wear a damn mask. Like hello people, we’re NOT back to a safe place yet.

Load More Replies...Just as lock-down started here, on my way home after my job sent us home, I stopped in a Walmart to grab a few essentials for quarantine. It was of course a madhouse. I was waiting while a teenage girl was frantically trying to restock the dairy case. I was able to get what I needed, and I said to the girl "thank you so much for being here today... this is really important work you're doing" and she burst into tears. She said "no one has been nice to me all day" and I can only imagine the abuse she'd taken. Poor little thing.
Worked fire/flood restoration. The number of times this pandemic where I was standing in a customer's flooded basement and they told me a) you don't have to wear that mask and b) it's my house, I'm not going to wear a mask. I've been in houses with people who "just have a cough" but won't wear a mask or keep their distance... SO MUCH FRUSTRATION!
Can’t you refuse to enter if they won’t comply? Let them swim to the laundry room….
Load More Replies...Makes me so angry that signs like this are needed because people act like buffoons
We need so much more than signs, we need laws so that police can act. Store security doesn't want to be hit, spit on or worse -some have been shot for requiiring masks and the police have no laws to enforce as yet... Those who sneeringly spread the disease commit a morally repugnant act and what should be a criminal offense but the laws are not yet in place.

Any store that sells water heaters and air conditioning etc is essential. That’s not funny at all.
Load More Replies...Oh well. I need these stores to do my job too. If people would just keep six feet apart and get vaccinated it wouldn’t have mattered. And now nobody cares about the pandemic like we used to.
If you are vaccinated and I am not why do you have to worry.. You got your shot.. If anything you are gonna pass it on as a carrier now... That's the virus way

And this is why I will do my grocery shopping online and have them deliver it. It's the best way to shop!
We called you "essential" because you get mad when we were honest and referred to you as "expendable".
you must be one of the jackasses who will get milk, steaks, eggs, change your mind and leave all of those things stuffed in the shampoo aisle. And then cry when there's no toilet paper. But the food was expendable though right.

In the UK they're seen as a pretty good employer by their employees and job seekers. I'd probably toss a customer into the ice cream machine in my first week so I would be a bad fit lol, but idiots who like to be d***s aren't their fault.
Load More Replies...McDonald's, of course, aims to hire teenagers, who don't need a living wage....
But the truth is, there are plenty of older people working there... just look inside. They also actively recruit older workers, who do need a living wage. Everyone needs a living wage. I was living on my own at 17; almost all of my friends were living on their own by 18 or 19.

This is truly horrible. During the economic crises in 2008-2009, I was worried that I would lose my job so I went to paramedic school just in case. I remember as a student, standing in a torrential downpour, on the side of a busy superhighway, in the most dangerous conditions imaginable, trying to save the lives of three people in a car crash, realizing I was risking my life every second for just barely above minimum wage. Firefighters, cops, most healthcare workers, teachers... the most important people in our world, and we pay them like crap! It makes no sense to me at all.
Load More Replies...Unskilled labor does not mean it takes no skill to do the job. It means that it is a skill everyone has without needing a specific education to do it. You dont need to go to a College to work in fast food, landscaping, phone calls, etc. Everyone can do it with little training. Those who go to school, do so to learn a skill the common man does not naturally possess without education. There are more scholarships/grants for minorities so there is no excuse for not having opportunity to get educated. No school would have the audacity to turn away a student for race, especially since most are run by the left. Retail is a starting point, a stepping stone while getting an education. It is not a life career but meant for teens and young college students, who often live at home and have less expenses
I was gonna say a fixed ice cream machine but I guess that joke is a bit too old.
It would be nice if we could refuse tax increases. Like we could just be like, sorry since you can’t increase my wages I can’t afford to pay your increased taxes.
People who make minimum wage already don't pay income tax (or get it all back at filing time if they didn't change their withholding).
Load More Replies...That changes nothing but hurts the homeless. Homeless will just have to work more hours on their begging corners as the price of everything rises to pay for the business owner’s life styles while at the same time needing to pay for the increased min wages
How I Wish This Wasn't True
Some Dutch shops have adopted this ridiculous rite of shouting "Welcome" when customers enter the store. I've heard many people yell back "Act normal!!!"
The main reason this is done is to let the customers know that we have seen them, it's the easiest way to discourage shoplifting and robbers
Load More Replies...I once worked at a grocery store where they decided we should greet every customer by name. And if they didn't tell us their name to try and get it off a check or something. I'd like, no. Hard pass.

As someone who does not like or crave attention, every time I walk in a Starbucks (usually crammed with people) and the whole staff yells "welcome to Starbucks!" and everyone turns to look at you, I want to disappear on the spot. 😅 But I am the person genuinely always asking the "how are you today/how's your day going?" before placing/picking my order. Please don't call me out in front of everyone. ❤️
Customers when you don't greet them: "Oh okay cool" What corporate thinks happens: "Wait, I wasn't greeted at a gas station? I'M SO MAD I'LL BEAT MY DOG!"

Load More Replies...Isn’t it because they think if they can’t hear you, you can’t hear them? It’s not something I’d do, but I understand the temptation as I’m sure I can’t hear as well in general when I have a mask on.
Only downside I have with masks. I have an auditory processing disorder thanks to my adhd. 90% the time I read lips when people are talking. When the masks are up I may be able to hear you, but my brain is lagging behind. I also think I'm loud when talking to customers, but at least 75% of the time I'm totally ignored...... Yay retail life during COVID.
OBVIOUSLY he is thinking if he cant hear properly when u speak with ur mask on maybe u cant hear him. geez its not rocket science.....dramatic much?
I work in a tourist city (dinner theater) and when masks were mandatory, people would try to get out of wearing them by saying, "masks aren't mandatory where I'm from." Like that would make me say, "Oh, well then, by all means, you don't need to wear one!" One man said he wasn't feeling well and sneezed -- AFTER removing his mask to do so because he didn't want to "breathe in my sneeze." Idiots. I'd much rather deal with baboons!

Customer: Is This Cash Only?
Walmart circa 2015 made you click "I understand" when it said that it didn't accept cash/card. About 1 in 5 got to the end of the transaction and then were completely dumbfounded that it didn.t take cash/card. I used to joke that customers would agree to selling their kidneys on those self checkouts and never know.

Most appreciated part of Busch Gardens Williamsburg at Christmas was that they had hours upon hours of DIFFERENT Christmas songs, and real music, not God-awful crap like Paul McCartney's "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time." But stores don't want to sound like Victorian England; they want to sound like Christmas stores... and they figure that means playing God-awful tripe.
Load More Replies...When I worked in the mall in Connecticut (US), my store was on the 2nd floor right above where Santa and his goofy lil elves would sit. During the week between 8am and 1pm when there was hardly anyone in the mall, the elves would play that god awful Chipmunk Christmas song over and over and over and over and over. It was on repeat. One day, I had a headache so I went down the escalator, marched right up to their tape player (this was in the early 90s), ejected the tape and proceeded to pull all of the tape out of the cassette and then snapped it in half. As I was going back to my store, the elves were yelling at me but all the employees from the stores nearby were cheering and clapping. They never played that song again lol
When I worked retail over Christmas, there was a Christmas song loop playing in my store, and one of the endless repeated songs was a version of Carol of the Bells that was so slowed down and breathy that it was downright creepy. I can’t properly listen to Carol of the bells now without being reminded of Christmas retail hell
Many moons ago the store I worked was required to play a local radio station. Repetitive but fine. We HAD to blast it out annoyingly loud even though the customers who frequented the pharmacy were mostly elderly. For a few memorable weeks, the song "Horny" by godknowswho was in the top 20 so was played at LEAST 6 times during a shift. Trying to explain to a little old lady how often she needs to take her heart meds while some deranged singer loudly and proudly shared their need to be ploughed was... different
Nothing gets you into a festive mood like annoying song played hundred times a day.
"we're the kids in america" played everyday like 17 times it was awful
Sorry, Please Come Back Tomorrow
Worked at a bar for years. After we FINALLY got the last patrons out and locked the door at (depending on how busy it was) between 1 and 4 am, it was a regular occurence that we'd have people banging on the door or windows, pointing at the door handle, kinda like trying to tell us "uh folks, you made a mistake there, the door doesn't open". Yeah, we fúcking know, it's on purpose, and we're glad about that. We have lives too, you know, and at some point we just wanna go home.
I just don't get what people don't understand about a LOCKED DOOR!

Some people never had customers calling on the phone at 7.10 pm (when you close at 7) asking if they can come, they're 5 minutes away from the store, could you please wait for them? and it shows....
Load More Replies...we have automatic doors. one exit one entrance (duh) the exit is at the ends of the registers but people coming into the store don't seem to realise that. However it is very funny to watch people stand at the door from the outside expecting it to open when its obviously an exit door. cracks me up everytime.
Anyone Else Get These Guys On The Regular?
That's why in Europe you pack your shopping bags yourself. So you can b!tch at yourself for packing them wrong.
In the US, half the time they get upset when I say i want to pack myself.
Load More Replies...I had one regular that was like this and every damn time they would end up buying another bag coz it would always be too heavy. They never learnt.

It Do Be Like That Sometimes
Yeah not just retail. Once spent the entire weekend moving servers and reconfiguring everything to work. On the tuesday, there was a staff meeting called by upper management that patted the management of the IT dept on the back, (and gave him a raise). Then congratulated the senior managers on running a smooth department. Then as the CEO was exiting the room, said that me and my co-workers looked tired. Really, no s**t. 2 12 hour days does that to you.
Trying To Avoid Customers When Going On Break
Unfortunately this logic doesn't work. Once I closed my eyes really tight but I was still kidnapped. /J
Load More Replies...I developed a sixth sense for working out which customers needed help in the direction of our break room and make sure I got spotted by them first so that I’m heading in the right direction and by the time I’ve finished with them it’s my break and I’m close enough to the break room to get there without being bothered
This is why I wear a tank top or long sleeve under my scrubs or work shirt.
Oh, Well……ok…..i’m….sorry…???
Yepp, once had a lady suddenly telling her husbands whole story how he survived cancer. Of course I was happy for them but it came out of nowhere!
Costumer here, I share good news with clerks I’ve just met.
Load More Replies...this happened to me but with a customer and my bagger. The bagger was this REALLY talktive old lady (that no one really liked) named susan. So my customer is in my line and sees susan and starts talking to her. I assume they know each other so i listen in (cause im nosy and bored) customer: "Oh wow it's really great to see you susan! How've you been?? How's your son?" Susan: "Im doing great, yeah. Mark (i dont remember his name) is doing well thanks for asking. he just got married." Customer: "That's great!" Susan: "Yeah! He had a heart attack last week." I was sitting there shocked that it had taken that aggressive of a turn. So I joked "Wow that was intense" (reminder im a trans guy) Susan glared at me and then looked at the customer and went "Don't mind her, she's on her period."
Sometimes it’s so easy to tell a random stranger something personal….. especially if you’re having a difficult day and want to let some of the weight off your shoulders. I’ve been on both sides. And I appreciate having been on both sides.

Nah, the first day. Especially since they don’t train seasonals very well. I was a seasonal twice and most of my training was stuff that wasn’t relevant to the position and learning about the company itself but not stuff like how to fold the clothes or what to do if a price tag falls off something.

YES YES YES YES YES!!!! I know in some cases, I haven't taken the side of the complaining retail worker, but this is what it all boils down to. YOU HAVE TO COMPENSATE YOUR WORKERS!!!!... moreso if there are unpleasantries involved.
Self awareness? Question their own mistakes with honesty and humility? Nooooooo!
Check The Back!
Oh I would just walk back around a corner and stand there for a minute then come out and say, nope we are completely out.
Did You Know?
And that is why I'm a mystery shopper, because my feedback goes directly to the top of the corporate ladder. Very satisfying!
The Amount Of Times I've Heard This...
They're expecting you to laugh like they invented that joke and you haven't heard it a dozen times already. Gets worse when customers/patrons are drunk. Had to fake-laugh so many times when I waited/barkept (is that a word, "to barkeep"? lol)
Sure, let me just ring that up for you. With processing fees that will be $1,100,000 please.
I used to say, "Sure as soon as you give me a billion, i'll be HAPPY to give you that million. Anytime."
I once said "If I had a million I wouldn't be here." The customer got mad and told me I was too honest LOL

Fun Fact: You Don’t Need To Be Told Corporate Is Coming...you Just Know By Looking At Ur Managers Lol
I Hate It When Managers Make You Look Like A Fool Just So They Don't Want To Stand Up To Customers
I'm lucky, the owner of the store I work in backs up the staff 99% of the time.
For The Tenth Time!
Soooooo Satisfying...
I work cleaning my high school and whenever there are people trying to come in after school hours for a sports game and try to come in the wrong doors and it doesn’t open. Very satisfying when they struggle but then they start banging on the doors and someone else (who doesn’t work and clean) let’s them in I’m like “really? You had to? I just mopped that and now I have to mop it again!”
Even better when they break it with their face while they driving and texting lol

Maybe just don't all wait till the very last moment? We had no cue and waiting time before 25-12.... But yes, you having to hold for so long gives you all the reason to yell at me for 5 minutes before allowing me to actually do what you called for
15-11 31-12 25-12 ? what does that mean. I am so confused with alot of these comments. lol

Shouldn't retail workers be treated with the same respect that veterans get? After all, they also served their country in the most harrowing circumstances.

Lucky bugger, I haven't had a raise in 7 years, apparently the company doesn't have the money for a raise. Unless you are a manager of course, then you get a new title, with a raise, but keep doing the same job.
Load More Replies...Isnt extra 2 dollars per hour really big increase for retail work in america? every post says you make minimum wage under 8 bucks, so 25% pay increase seems substantial.
A 25% increase still leave them far under the living wage threshold. They still need more than one full time job to afford rent, utilities and food. So not great.

Do We Still Have To Call Them “Guests” If They Cough On Us?
When I worked at a model toy store, we had a lot of regulars who were the sweetest, most fascinating old men, a lot of them ex military and delightfully obsessed with regaling me with tales of their previous planes or trains they had built. Lots of times when a customer began stepping out of line if any of them were there, they would kind of crowd next to me and become my geriatric secret service lol. Once a woman spat on me because I confronted her about the truck she had stashed in her baby's pushchair (pram) and Mr H, my favourite regular, went purple with rage and loudly shamed her, one hand using his hankie to remove the spit from my shoulder and the other wagging a scolding finger in her face. While he was doing that a coworker managed to convince her boyfriend to just hand it over and go. Happy ending :)
This really gave me something to think about. The real issue here is that it seems retail workers are just supposed to accept whatever comes their way. The problem isn't really the customers. The problem is the companies and the management that have allowed this customer behaviour to become normal. When customers behave badly, staff should be able to refuse to serve them and managers should tell them to leave. Nobody should ever have to deal with adults behaving like spoiled babies, ever.
Totally... Whoever invented the phrase 'the customer is always right' should be shot into space.

I had a very similar experience working as a cashier at the pool last summer! Because we're funded by the park district we dont exactly have those new fancy card readers that you can tap your cards on and we also require people to sign. And lucky me she shows up again during my shift and goes on the same rant. Only this time I have a personal, scented hand sanitizer by my keyboard in her line of sight. Of course she sees and then DEMANDS to use it because she had to touch our "disgusting" card reader. Wish I had told her no like you did because after I gave her some she scoffed and didn't even say thank you like she was entitled to my personal hand sanitizer.
