Oh Susan!
Why would I want to read anything serious? Real life is depressing enough
Sounds Crazy Right?
Cannot upvote this enough. Also, some days I don't want to keep reading dark m****r mysteries and want a bit of fluff literature instead. Or a new book drops. Or STFU and live your own life.
As a writer, I'll never tell you that reading is a bad habit. In fact, please, do read more! Fiction is more than just a way to escape daily life. It helps you understand how others feel and lets you see things from different points of view. Plus, you get to enjoy a great story at the same time.
Reading may not instantly make someone more empathetic, but it does have real benefits. Studies show that reading fiction can help people become a little better at understanding what others think and feel. So if you want another reason to grab a book, here it is.
The Best Goal
I Just Want To Be Prepared, Is All
And because I watched the Twilight Zone, I have multiple pairs of glasses!
Anyone who loves books knows the struggle of stopping at the right time. You promise yourself just one chapter before bed, but then you hit a cliffhanger and suddenly it's much later than you planned. Reading can help you relax, but when the story is really good, it can be hard to put the book down.
If you want a good night's sleep, the kind of book you pick is important. Something calm can help you settle down, but a suspenseful thriller might keep you turning pages to see what happens next. Sleep experts suggest making reading part of your bedtime routine.
Over the past few years, I’ve purposely replaced screen time with books. I’ve always loved to read, but lately I’ve been reading a lot before bedtime, so I can vouch for this advice. Just try not to save the most exciting part for midnight.
All The Time
I will shank a bìtch. Do not bug me when I’m reading. Especially when it’s just got to a good part
Oooh Yeah
However, the numbers suggest that, sadly, Americans are spending less time reading for pleasure. In 2004, around 28% of Americans read for fun on an average day. By 2023, that figure had dropped to just 16%. That's a considerable change over two decades, and it raises a fair question: are books losing their place in our daily lives?
The decline wasn't just a one-year blip, either. Researchers found that daily recreational reading participation fell by about 3% per year over the period examined. With so many other ways to spend our free time, from scrolling social media to streaming shows, finding room for a book may be getting harder.
Oooh Perfect
And then, you’ve finished the book, it’s 3 am, and you have to be up for work at 7. No regrets
Say Less
Say No More
However, there's an important detail to keep in mind: these figures don't tell us how many people read books at all. The research measured how many people read for pleasure on a particular day.
Someone who reads every weekend but doesn't open a book on a Tuesday still counts as a non-reader in that day's figures. So the numbers don't prove that fewer Americans read books over an entire year.
And here's another interesting twist: the people who did read for pleasure actually spent more time doing it. In 2003, they averaged around 1 hour and 23 minutes of reading per day. By 2023, that had increased to 1 hour and 37 minutes. In other words, fewer people picked up a book on an average day, but those who did kept reading for longer.
Ugh! Life Is Great
Nothing Is More Accurate Than This
And yet, instead of reading all those new books I want to read, I find myself rereading the same old favorites that I've loved for years.
Reading Is Peaceful
Even though people might be reading less these days, you wouldn’t know it by looking at some book lovers’ shelves. Many readers keep picking up new releases, adding books to their wish lists, and grabbing great deals, all while their stack of unread books keeps growing. The well-known TBR, or “to-be-read” pile, just keeps getting bigger.
Why does this happen? Some people like having lots of choices, while others just can’t pass up a good deal or a book that looks interesting. The trouble is, free time doesn’t increase as the collection does.
Soon, picking the next book to read becomes its own challenge, and the unread pile starts to feel like a never-ending to-do list.
God Forbid
When i retired, I spent the first month in bed, reading, and only got up to take out the dog and for personal hygiene and food. It was glorious!
What Book Would You Like To Experience Reading Again For The First Time?
Just Don't
Of course, not every book on those shelves is waiting to be read. Sometimes, people buy books just because they enjoy having them. A beautiful cover, a special edition, or the simple pleasure of seeing a full shelf can be enough to bring home another book, even when space is tight.
Books can mean much more to their owners than the stories printed inside them. They can hold memories, reflect personal taste, and make a room feel more like home. That's one reason parting with them can be surprisingly difficult.

I Guess I Don't Have A Choice
I Mean, What If? I'm Like Saving Them
I've just about finished rereading Going Postal by Terry Pratchett. The letters NEED to be read!! :-)
Even when the shelves are overflowing, getting rid of a few books may feel less like tidying up and more like saying goodbye to old friends. Am I right?
At the end of the day, there’s no such thing as having too many books… just too little shelf space and not enough hours in the day. And honestly, that sounds like a pretty good problem to have!

Like... What????
And then searches for the rest of the books in the series. If you’re gonna binge read, go big or go home

U Mean Trust A Bookworm
And we'll re-read it again and again over the years and cry every time. A certain scene in one of Stephen King's Dark Tower books comes to mind for me. I know the moment is coming, I know it's happening, but I'll bawl every time anyway.
It's Too Good
Nah. When you can’t even put it down while cooking what you’re eating, that’s a good book

Oh! I Guess I Don't Keep Promises Well
When we retired, we searched for a small rural town to retire to. One of the attractions where we selected is that the library had a huge large print section.
It's Embarrassing And So Hard
I've often tried to explain the stories that live in my own head (that I've never gotten around to writing down, lol. And I was an English/Creative Writing major. sigh.) I realize that, no matter how good the plot sounds in my head, no matter how clever and witty the characters are when they talk to each other in my head, the person I try to explain them to just looks at me and is like "So it's about four talking doglike creatures who wander through the desert looking for a giant escalator???" Me: No! I mean... actually, yes, BUT--

Delusion's Overflowing
I Rate Books On How It Made Me Feel Btw
Gentle disagree to a certain extent - I've read some really well-written books, and that makes it difficult to read the poorly-written ones sometimes. I get yanked out of my immersion constantly by poor wording or really poor sentence structure, and it really makes it so I can't enjoy the plot or characters, no matter how good the story itself might be.
So Many Books, Not Much Time
I, on the other hand, am OVERJOYED with the concept of unending good books out there to read

I love concepts of tiny public libraries where you can bring your books to and you can take some home. People get creative to create them. Sometimes it is an old telephone booth, sometimes a bookshelf in a shop. You rarely find the latest books but I have found some good ones that were new to me.

All The Kind Of Feels
I’m a horror genre fanatic and this is literally the stages of reading and finishing a book (From Top Left to Top Right) 1. Excited to start the book 2. I feel like Ik how it’s going to end 3. Ooo “scary” part that isn’t scary 4. Why did the main character just do that. 5. Uh… 6. Actual scary part!! 7. RUN FORREST RUN!! 8. THATS how it ends?????

I Mean Those Books Need Me
I'm a lifelong reader/book lover, just like my dad was. We were the kind of people who would read the cereal box at breakfast and the shampoo bottle on the toilet because we didn't want to be away from reading something XD He got me my first "all access" library card when I was 6. (Our city's library is truly glorious - 115,000 sq ft/10,700 m sq, and nearly 400,000 books!) My mom and sister, on the other hand, will PROUDLY state that they hate reading. My sister hasn't read a book since high school (she's 50.) No one has to love reading, but being proud of hating to read has always baffled me.
Hey, fellow readers -- if you have a Goodwill bins outlet in your near vicinity, ALL BOOKS are only 25 cents each! At least that's the case in my state, Colorado.

Load More Replies...Far more interesting poll coming - my GP recently expressed bewildered amazement at the concept of rereading books. Personally I always loved how each rereading brought new little details or insights, but...I'm now wondering how odd it really is that several of my favourites have sellotape holding the pages in place. So: to reread endlessly or not to reread?
Reread. I actually usually have one new and one reread going at the same time.
