Load More Replies...I read that wrong.... I thought it said she didn't win the gold because she didn't wear her glasses (goggles) in the pool and I was like what in the actual fk kind of rule is that??? Then I re read it and went ohhhh. Maybe I need glasses.
She had been adopted from a Chinese orphanage, abandoned there most likely due to their "1 child policy". Weibo has been hopping with comments about her "Chinese heritage", her win is a win for China, etc... As well as people pointing out she probably wouldn't have had the opportunities she has in Canada, and thus may not have even been on the Chinese team! She says, well, I was born in China, that's about it. I'm Canadian!
Holy crap this is so me! I book a lane for an hour but because I'm not wearing my glasses when I swim I can't see the fooking clock!
I...I didn't even consider this option, and now I can't live without it becoming a thing.
I would just love it if cannon balling was part of the Olympic diving. Or they did it at the end and f the games for fun. The same with every sport. Just find the fun part of the sport and do it. It would be a great way to let off steam and just really enjoy yourselves.
Over the years, they've added sports that ppl didn't alway think were for the Olympics. (Most recent being skateboarding.) It's great they did this! If they let the athletes do a "for fun" at the end, try diff sports, do cannon balls in the pool, etc., I totally think more ppl would watch. Many watch already, but this would get even more watchers. It's superb idea! How do we make it happen?!
For cannonball competition, there should be 3 clean and dry judges sitting poolside. Highest points for the wettest judges. And pick judges from other sports too.
I love Japan, its definitely my fave country to visit in the world. I've been 3 times, hoping to go another once its safe to travel. But Abhinc is right, there are definitely downsides to it, and to living there. It's amazing to visit though. But no where is perfect.... everywhere has its flaws. That said there are a lot of things they do better than other places.. some others not so much.
Load More Replies...With so many fans not being able to attend the Olympics this year, the post-pandemic sports event seems very different from what we were used to. Just like most professional sports, Olympic events feed off crowd energy that transfers onto the screens for viewers at home.
Commenting on the very different kind of Olympic experience this year, Rick Burton, a professor of sport management at Syracuse University and the former chief marketing officer of the US Olympic Committee for the 2008 Beijing games, called the experience “sterile.” “The sponsors are going to be thinking the ratings will be down. They’re worried they’re not going to get their money’s worth,” he added.
I feel like they deserve an extra medal, but that's just me
Load More Replies...Funny thing is they think pot is performance enhancing. I can assure you, after many lab trials, it is not.
This would be the highlight of the event and the whole world would be waiting. And imagine the level of betting
Think of the amazing combinations that could come up. Who wouldn't want to watch 6'5"+ Kevin Durante and Phil Dalhausser compete together in BMX freestyle, rowing, and synchronized swimming. How about 5'2" gymnast Grace McCullum in fencing, weight-lifting, and rock climbing?
Transport of everything! The logistics of the Olympics is impressive... they have to get the athletes, horses, rowboats, kayaks, canoes, bikes, bedding, uniforms, guns, punching bags.... there is a TON of stuff that has to be shipped to the Olympics
Load More Replies...A lot of thought has to go into transporting a horse anywhere, but with the Olympics it's inevitable that it will include air transport. You also have to think about which host city the Olympics are being held in. When Melbourne held their Games in 1956, Australia has very strict quarantine laws regarding animals entering g the country, so all the Equestrian events were held in Stockholm. In Beijing for the 2008 Games, because of the high levels of air pollution, they moved the Equestrian events to Hong Kong.
Does anyone else not like Equestrian in the Olympics? The horse does all the work to be honest, yeah it is trained but it is the athlete not the person riding...rant over.
Have you ever seen a fat rider at this level? It's hard work for the rider, and takes decades of training to be able to ride at this level. Many riders also have several horses in training at one time. The rider isn't just plopped in the saddle, they are sat carefully, giving subtle cues to the horse at the proper time, feeling what the horse is doing so they can give the cues at the right time so the horse does the maneuver smoothly. And that's"just" dressage. 3 day eventing, which is like horse moto cross, is rough, and even show jumping in the ring is a challenge!
Load More Replies...Yes and we all saw the horses on a plane and people weren't too happy https://www.boredpanda.com/fascinating-rarely-seen-things/?comment_id=7191492
Horses who compete internationally fly all the time with food, water, and grooms.

Moreover, sports psychologists are now observing an Olympics without fans as a real-life science experiment. It’s thought to help researchers and clinicians to measure the impact of a crowd of fans on its players—and on spectators at home. The unprecedented times offer an entirely new glimpse into what is the social and psychological makeup of the Olympic Games and how the competing athletes are affected by it.
This is utter none sense...let them wear what they want and what is comfortable! It's their skills on show not their bodies.
That whole thing was stupid. They're athletes. If they're comfortable in what they're wearing and it doesn't give them an unfair advantage, let them be.
I hate the fact that these women are having to take a stand in the year 2021 to not wear clothing they are uncomfortable in only to be fined for it when they stand up for themselves. Would they ask a male shot putter to wear a thong, no, and thank god
Well the people are there to watch a guy throw his balls around.
Load More Replies...If the male beach volleyball players can wear loose fitting shorts, the women should be able to also.
Geez....they must’ve thought that they would have a players advantage of not having to pick out their wedgies every couple of minutes
...because it's still OK to sexualize and demean women if it's in the name of sports.
We are a hypocritical bunch! The IOC and FIFA are like evil twins.
A friend of mine who is a brilliant swimmer and diver and who won a lot of competitions in her youth told me once she was swimming in competition and got severe leg cramps. If the life guard hadn’t been there to get her out she could’ve drowned. The cramps came out of nowhere and she had done all her stretches before hand. She was just unlucky that day.
She seems to echo your sentiment. I guess it's if someone blacks out or something? Idk...or maybe an OSHA requirement.
These people push themselves to the absolute limit. If something goes wrong for them, it's likely to go horrifically wrong.
Load More Replies...Just because they are excellent swimmers doesn't mean that they may not require help.
What about the fact that 13 years old girls won gold and silver and a 16 year old got bronze in the women's street skateboarding? Insane
Exactly! I couldn't believe it when I heard they were both only 13!
Load More Replies...Surfing looked like that too - and with everyone hugging and cheering each other. It looked more like a party at times.
Surfing is one of those sports I pretty much just watch every 4 years. Gold medalist Carissa Moore's performance was one of the best athletic feats I've seen so far. It looked like she was going 200 mph and there was no chance she could ever change directions without her board exploding. Then she'd do a complete 270 degree turn and keep all her speed. The gold medal match looked like Jordan playing me in basketball.
Load More Replies...We were so excited when snowboarding became an Olympic sport because we had been watching the Winter X Games and Shaun White for years! It's nice to see people relax and have fun in their sport!
I guarantee most of those skateboarders despite what they may wear are more 'ripped' than you would probably imagine.
Most skaters are really slim because having extra mass makes it harder to perform the required motions. Big leg muscles might help you ollie higher but they get in the way when you need to quickly switch the position of your feet in any number of directions. But you better believe they have crazy muscle tone their core strength is superb. Also, they are as tough as they come, skateboarding injuries are really painful at that level.
Actually I was saying when you look all around you see a diverse makeup and I like that. I have seen a couple fluffies and I keep saying there is a sport for everybody.
Some athletes have already stressed the pressure that’s been building for not having an audience of spectators. On Tuesday, superstar gymnast Simone Biles dropped out of the women’s team event, blaming “not the right headspace” for competition. “It’s been really stressful this Olympic Games. Just as a whole, not having an audience. There are a lot of different variables going into it,’ she told the Washington Post.
The findings made on viewers’ engagement also show that sports without fans may be way less enjoyable. Kantar, a research firm that measures consumer enthusiasm, found that two-third of American sports spectators announced that watching sports during the pandemic was not as engaging and enjoyable. “[The Olympics] could be a little bit less engaging, a little bit less fulfilling for the viewer,” Ryan McConnell, Kantar’s senior vice president for consulting, told Quartz.
Damn, BP's censoring has gone to (present tence cat in french)
Ms. Biles did the correct thing for herself AND the team. She "lost" her "way" and she could have hurt herself, physically, destroying her abilities for the rest of her life. In addition, she allowed another American to take her place instead of ensuring a total defeat for the team.
Actually, my criticism was she should've dropped out sooner. Something after the prelims just made me think, "Oh man, her head's not in it, she's gonna break something...." I'm glad she didn't break any bones trying to "push through". Good for her!
yay!!!! real adult words not bleeped out!!! i am an adult, i love this!

Load More Replies...I love watching so many of the small countries' athletes putting it all on the line with no chance but to defend their pride. During the women's mountain bike competition I watched the Namibia's entry get lapped by the eventual gold medal winner. She was pedaling up that hill like she was defending a 10 minute lead. I had to look her up (Michelle Vorster) - she's a 42 year old who is truly the best at what she does in her country and is proud to represent them.
Belgium just won gold in gymnastics bridge uneven bars. Beat US, Russia and China... while this was not really unexpected, people in Belgium are still losing their sh*t over this and rightly so. What an accomplishment!

What article is your comment about? This is about Russia being banned from the Olympic Games due to doping accusations. But to be fair, the athletes that were not involved in the accusations were allowed to compete under another name: COR. I'm not annoyed, I love both sports. I'm just wondering what happens when they go to a place that doesn't have surf for the surfers?
sometimes they have to stretch the definition of 'host city' a bit. So for the Paris olympics in 2024 I believe the surfing will be in Tahiti (French Polynesia) - about 9000 miles from Paris.

Load More Replies...But it's unfair to count medals like that... the more athletes a country sends the more chance of them winning.
Actually it is kinda fair. In most sports, athletes need to enter Olympics qualifying matches to win their positions in the Olympic Games.

We all are like how amazing is that one of us won the Olympics bronze ? It's amazingest!
One of the things I am actually thrilled about is watching the Russians aka Russian Olympic Federation [or something] win medals. It is exciting because they are really committed to doing this without government accreditation or the government forcing them. They are really great. I used to "want" them to lose because it was a "political" thing and because they cheated so much, but these participants are what being Olympic players should be.
USA and China have awfully large populations to select from, personally I go for the small ones who still end in the top, they are the greatest.

And another American girl won gold anyway, so all the fuzz was pointless.
Here's what these fools can't seem to understand. Biles is an athlete competing on a TEAM. She made the very difficult choice to withdraw from certain events IN ORDER TO GIVE HER TEAM THE BEST CHANCE TO WIN.
As someone who has struggled with mental health a lot, I feel so bad for Simone Biles
lol, I chalk that up to karma. Perhaps he can go hoarse from shouting about it in public too so that he can't type and talk? Wishful thinking.
If she wasn't in the right headspace then its a good thing she pulled out. She could have been seriously hurt otherwise. It's important in any sport, any activity to be in the right frame of mind.

Load More Replies...Ok, I see her name again and have no clue whats the fuss, I am not american, so I haven't heard about any controversy about her, could somebody explain please?
And what this meme is referring to, is she has 2 things she does that almost litterally if she even completes them poorly (she is the only person to have ever done either of them), their difficulty is so high, she'd win. They said their weren't going to giver her credit for how difficult they were, to give other gymnasts a chance. People that like to poop on her success say she left in protest of this decision. One of them could easily leave the gymnast paralyzed with the smallest misstep. So was she pouting, not willing to risk it for no recognition, or actually worried about breaking her neck, you decide.
Load More Replies...That girl deserves better. Better from the people in the Olympics who have the power to make decisions that affected how she was scored differently and better from the people at home. I don't know what she was going through, I can't imagine but if she decided to walk away she didn't make that decision lightly. Think of all the blood ,sweat, and tears over her entire career and walking away from all of that. I love her more for respecting herself and knowing that she needed to walk away for her own well-being.
Yeah, she ran into a big wall of "why even?". Big props to her, we all know she's amazing. Now everyone else has a chance to show off their mediocrity.
When I heard that they wouldn't score her accurately, I was like, that's the whole freaking point of gymnastics scoring. Doing moves others can't gets you points.

Le me tell you my thoughts on Simone Biles. She's not a robot. She's a high-performance athlete. If she doesn't want to compete for any reason, its perfectly ok for her not to. Expecting athletes to break themselves for our amusement and perform on command is an incredibly misanthropic attitude.
