30 Architects Who Did Not Think Their Projects Through And Created Eyesores (New Pics)
Interview With Expert“Measure twice, cut once” sounds like common sense. However, that’s easier said than done. Some ‘professionals’ are in such a hurry to get their jobs done that their results end up negatively impacting a whole bunch of people.
The ‘Bad Planning’ account on X (formerly Twitter) calls out incompetent and negligent architects, planners, surveyors, and engineers who made egregious and long-lasting mistakes. We’ve collected some of the top photos of design eyesores to show you how a failure to plan affects the entire project and everyone living near there. Scroll down to see what that looks like.
Bored Panda wanted to learn more about what poor city planning looks like, so we reached out to Sweden-based urban planner and designer Luka Kodikaitė. She was kind enough to shed some light on the topic and shared her perspective on the negative impact of car-centric cities. Read on for our full interview with her.

What does this have to do with the topic of the list? Of course it's lousy when a tree is cut down. Though often it is due to disease, or a limb has fallen off, etc. But is this the topic of the list?
BP is so full of c**p. What does this have to do with architecture or engineering...?
Unless the tree had to be removed because it was diseased or unsafe, that's a waste. Trees make streets so much more enjoyable.
We wanted to learn more about poor city planning and how it can impact residents in a negative way. According to Kodikaitė, some of the worst examples of poor city planning often prioritize cars over people.
"With the rise of the automobile, cities experienced a shift towards environments heavily reliant on cars for daily commuting, resulting in longer distances, wider roads, and increased parking space at the expense of green areas," the Sweden-based urban planner explained to Bored Panda.
"One infamous case that altered urban planning history is the clash between Jane Jacobs, a grassroots activist, and Robert Moses, a New York City urban planner, regarding the proposed construction of the Lower Manhattan Expressway. Jacobs argued against carving up inner-city communities for the sake of expressways, emphasizing the detrimental impact on neighborhoods and community life," she shared.

ok but why do they have a triangular courtyard in front of their house
Right? Looks ok until you realize you have to walk down to the road and back up to get to the door
Load More Replies..."This emphasis on car use is also reflected in the treatment of urban cycling by planners. Cyclists are often marginalized and perceived negatively in comparison to drivers. We see such hazardous examples such as bike lanes placed on high-speed roads or highways, where cyclists are extremely more vulnerable in traffic situations compared to cars."
These car-centric cities can have lots of negative consequences for the people living there, from increased air pollution and traffic congestion to ugly environments and reduced walkability.
"Another detrimental by-product of car-oriented development is the urban sprawl, leading to low-density suburbs lacking essential amenities and perpetuating car dependency while discouraging walkability," Kodikaitė told Bored Panda.
Meanwhile look at the condition of the road. Maybe it’s for their own safety. /s

If I were a teen around there I would go out at night and take all the signs down. And I have form for that... someone hung a BNP election poster from a lamppost in our street many years ago, and my brother and I went out at night, climbed the lamppost and took it down. Didn't want people thinking the whole street was occupied by far-right wankers.

Same person fixing this, as the one fixing electrical wire in the church pic we have seen on BP before?
Yeah, because this was designed by an architect, not just done by some semi r******d home owner/contractor.
I mean, that little balcony around a window seems pretty pointless anyway...
With all of this in mind, we were interested in finding out how planners and architects can become more aware of making potential mistakes or decisions with negative consequences.
"Unfortunately, in our current economic system, funding decides the quality of the projects. However, there are still ways that planners and architects can influence the outcomes within those frames," the urban planner told Bored Panda.
"One pitfall to avoid is the tendency to adopt a 'one-plan-fits-all' mentality. The same concept applied in one country or community will probably function differently when applied in a different context. An effective approach is to actively involve the community and stakeholders in the planning process. By listening to the people who will inhabit the spaces, unexpected insights can emerge, completely turning around the preconceived ideas that were initially based on well-intended, yet stereotyped, assumptions," Kodikaitė urged planners to approach these decisions from a different perspective and be more involved with the community.
This is a great idea, just change the glass to clear, and his dog or cat can look out St the world.
Exactly why it was done. Saw it on another post and the owner confirmed he did it for the dog.

This is actually what I wanted to do for my cats so they could see out and I could also see if they wanted to come in.
They took all the trees put 'em in a tree museum
Load More Replies...The premise here is without merit and probably even hypocritical to other viewpoints of some of the people who are in agreement with it. Grass does not equal children will play outside. There are simply more enjoyable things to do inside now than outside. What you are seeing here is a result of urban density and multi-family housing, which a lot of people advocate for vs. sprawl and suburbs. I think if you look back historically, you'll find plenty examples of kids playing outside in paved streets and areas in major cities where a lack of grass goes back generations, and you can still find kids playing in the street in slower suburbs (single family home burbs). You can then look at rural areas with plenty of grass today and see a lack of kids playing outside, not mention higher child obesity rates in these areas. Then there are areas in the hot climates that had backyards that are nothing more than dirt and rocks. We're these kids also playing or not because of grass?
Absolutely right. I grew up in a city in the 70s and the next greewas a fair away. We didn't care if there was a green ot the paved street with no/little traffic. The neighbours were complaining sometimes about us screaming, but I don't see the point why this is here.
Load More Replies...The ones tha whine about kids not playing outside oppose walkable cities, oppose public transit, and want to live only in suburbs where you can't go anywhere except by car.

Yeah, there is that. Look, I really, REALLY, REALLY, wish we would stop all this concrete and tarmac everywhere. It's awful, distopian, depressing and it's killing the world. But... That is a good point though. Where I live the kids round here, almost all of them, have a bike, or a scooter. Some have blades. And they use our carpark and paths between the two halves of our housing to play and ride and scoot up and down, round and round. They're out there often till it's going dark. So yes, I HATE seeing it in the amount it's become. But... Hey, we've got kids out there, having fun, playing, running about, riding, etc - weather permitting - every day. But on said hard ground, as well, equally so, down by the Ponds and all the green space we do, SO fortunately, also have right next to us all. I hate to say it. I do. But... It has use... In much smaller takeover...

All those fissures in the concrete tell me there was once a majestic shade tree in that spot. Eliminating the tree and putting in fake turf is a double abomination
“On the other hand, in some cases, planners and architects can become too rigidly set in their old ways, adopting the ‘we’ve always done this way, and it worked just fine’ mentality without acknowledging that the current has become outdated. Examples exist in other countries which have data to prove that different models and approaches can be significantly greater, yet planners in other countries refuse to apply it, thinking it would never work on their soil," she pointed out that this sort of narrowmindedness can be detrimental to everyone.
"Lastly, in the current day’s spirit of sustainable thinking, planners ought to work with the future in mind. Designing sustainably long term involves creating adaptable spaces and structures capable of evolving alongside changing needs and circumstances. This approach minimizes resource waste and ensures long-term viability."
Just maybe you don't want you windows facing the ugly noisy street. Maybe they have plenty windows on the hopefully green other sides
It is also possible that this house is located in a warm climate and the facade faces south: then it is very practical to prevent it from getting too hot in the house (and all windows are on the other facades). That probably explains the white color of the facade.

Reminds me of Texas actually. In late 2000s early 2010s a lot of houses in Central Texas were shoddily built. You could fall, like trip over a shoe lace, hit a wall, and the ENTIRE WALL would move/break. The studs were also 1.5x spaced out than they should have been. They stole electricity from The Neighboring HOA, built on land that has over a dozen empty shell companies owning it, connected the sewage to the wrong neighborhood that happened to be on county line, increasing the flow and causing damage. It's a train wreck. Also couldn't get this resolved. Also local council members in Texas were donated lake side houses.
Looks like it's the sides and bottoms? Not the frame or "walkable" parts?
It's just symptomatic of the lowest-bidder attitude taken by local councils.

Yes, these things are hell on wheels to people with a disability. I'm a wheelchair user, and these things often block the ramps of the pavement. Then I have to turn back, cross the street at another point, and cross the street again.

Seem like a bathroom, may be nice with the fresh air. A more beautiful solution could have existed, though. 😂
No problems with this one. Need it to get ventilation in the bathroom and I want a hefty handle so I don't have to stand on the toilet to open/close it.
I bet that's a replacement window for a wooden one with a much smaller frame 🤔
You have my vote, such a waste of space and so bad for the environment, I know that a coffee shop without drive-through would still require parking space but at least when ppl leave the car to get the coffee they turn the engine off
Load More Replies...And evidently only 1 person working inside. (1 parked car). Wonder if this was during Covid when only drive-thru windows were open.
During the COVID period people were supposed to work from home as much as possible so I would be surprised that this was taken during that period. And if there is really only 1 person working at the time of that photo, then that is mainly bad management. By the way, I suspect that such a job does not really pay well, so who says whether the employees can afford a car?
Load More Replies...When you see there's a line that long wouldn't you park and walk in?
Not if this image was taken during the pandemic and the inside was closed!
Load More Replies...Clearly they are not allowing people inside, and only the drive through is open. And from the parking lot, it looks like they only have one (possibly 2) people working today.
Has anyone besides Sunny Day realized that this image might be from the pandemic days, even if the repost is dated August 2023? It is a Getty image so it might have been online since 2020.
I get there is a degree of laziness. But, we need to consider other people have other needs than yourself. Like, when I have a small child, it is hard to get them out of the car and carry a hot coffee. I and many others also have physical disabilities and drive thrus make our loves easier. On my good days, when child free, I often do go in. But, employees are generally told to help drive thru first, so the person in side has to wait longer.
Did you know they sell coffee at the grocers? You can actually make it at home!
My guess is that this is a misleading photo. I'm thinking this is a photo taken during the pandemic, when you would have HAD to do drive-thru, and not allowed to park and go inside to get your order.
There's no community any more. Let the children sit in front of their screens, rather than play with neighbourhood children. Then we wonder why they have trouble communicating to one another, are obese and can't play active games. this is an oversimplification, but surely there's a problem when children aren't allowed to play.
Totally agree and we see it more and more often where kids aren’t allowed to do basic activities because it’s a “nuisance” to others. I think everyone forgets they were children once.
Load More Replies...There are a couple of balls out there on the grass so at least kids are being kids! Maybe that's the only way you can get them out there to play is to try to prohibit them from doing so!
When I was a kid I had a friend who wasn't allowed to play ball games. I don't know what his parents had against it but he was not allowed to play with a ball at all. We used to play catch with a cardboard box instead because hey it's not a ball!
Hmmm i wonder what age group made all of these rules for kids.....
ok but kids still play outside... have none of you gone outside? literally kids playing outside everyday.
Those kids are boomers. They enjoyed protected play time, but then bought homes and banned anyone else from playing like they had.
There are plenty of issues to consider, from offering plenty of accommodation and good transportation systems to how you integrate green areas into the beating urban heart of the megapolis.
Not only that, but you also have to consider how the architectural and design details affect the population. That includes buildings and roads but also extends to everything from lampposts and benches to how you design trash cans.
A lot beautiful buildings like this are torn down and it is sad. I’m not sure of the whole story here but upkeep, major repairs, and retrofitting of old buildings like this can be prohibitively expensive for old buildings. If it was left in unused and in disrepair it’s possible it could not be saved without virtuallly rebuilding it. Designs of churches are somewhat specific use buildings that do not easily lend themselves easily to other businesses or residences without extensive modifications. Many small businesses do not make enough money to keep up such a building and new start up businesses don’t have enough capital to make the necessary modifications and repairs. Churches on some areas suffer from declining congregations especially in rural areas with declining populations. So vacant buildings like this sit empty and turning to ruin, broken into, vandalized, squatted in, and trespassed. Turning a once proud building into a blight in the neighborhood.
Instead of saying "attracting anti-social behaviour", why not just say that priests were sexually abusing children? It's the same thing.
Well technically, anti-social means against society, and antisocial behavior is technically regarded scientifically as psychopathic behavior, or behavior that harms society, such as serial killing (maybe SA falls under this category as well). What everybody thinks is “antisocial” now (just not liking people/being an introvert) is actually probably better described as asocial.
Load More Replies...Or it may be a way of avoiding what happened in New London, Connecticut, recently. Old buildings aren't always structurally sound.
The worst part is they'll probably replace it with a new church that looks like a shoebox
In the UK that's unlikely. Church attendance drops every year and churches are closed up in many places. Clergymen often have to tend to two or three congregations because people don't fall for the con that is religion as much any more.
Load More Replies...I love to see grand old buildings restored/repurposed, but some think that any old building should be saved. There's a lot of cases of people trying to save cr@p (not referring to this particular church).
I hate churches and Religion but how is it antisocial? It gathers a lot of people xx
There must be something wrong with me, I rather like it. Not much, because it's not an attractive building as such, but preferable to unstaggered ( sorry can't think of the word, only just got up)
"(sorry can't think of the word, only just got up)". Try 'aligned'.
Load More Replies...Wow, have none of you actually lived in a Multi-Story apartment building?! If anything, these are not staggered enough! Who cares about the aesthetic, you need functional. Having everything stacked means you get the airflow from your downstairs neighbor which is TERRIBLE! Nothing like breathing in a fresh breath of nastiness from your neighbor. I've always wondered why they didn't make more like this but I guess now I see why. The majority don't know the pain of apartment living.
It's better than everything being the same if your budget constrained you to brutalist architecture. Quit your complaining or become the architect with dollars.
At the very least put a garden bed under there and pretend it's meant to look like that.
I have the feeling that the sidewalk and road used to be lower. This building might be rather old.
We have one of those in my town. A new building with square sharp edges on the balconies. I almost scalped myself the first time I walked past it. Now they have the same solution as in the picture, but there is not enough sidewalk and people have to step out into traffic. The building permits here is a joke and this is not even the worst example. =/
Someone bribed the zoning board. That sidewalk was obviously there first.
Probably to simply stop people walking under and banging their heads.
Load More Replies...Your mental and emotional health can vary quite a bit depending on your surroundings. Think about how you’d feel living surrounded by minimalist designs, industrial buildings, and brutalist homes all day, every day. Being surrounded by beauty can do wonders for our health and happiness.
The ‘Bad Planning’ account was created nearly 5 years ago, back in July 2019. In the half a decade since its founding, it’s drawn quite a crowd of architecture fans. At the time of writing, the project had a loyal following of 151.5k X users.
The curator of the account calls it a “celebration” of all the low-quality stuff “imposed on our environment.” It’s a way to call out incompetence and thoughtlessness in all the things related to urban planning. It’s also an invitation for all professionals to do better.
The park in my neighborhood has poles that can be removed with a lock when vehicles need access, and it leaves enough room for pedestrians, wheelchairs and cyclists and strollers when in place.
Is this a public footpath? Contractors are just idiots. And even more so are the Councils that would demand that this is done.
But look, it has those little bike gutters on the side so you can walk your bike instead of carrying it. I'd still just carry my bike.
I'd probably just ride up or down on the dirt that is off to picture right. It looks smooth and the angle seems consistent and there aren't any light poles.
That's exactly what's going to happen, because as soon as I looked at the picture the same idea struck me as well, so you can rest assured everyone else is going to think of it too...
Load More Replies...Definitely not for driving, but the furrow on the right side is for pushing the bicycle down or up. I wished our train station would at least have those.
I'd swerve off in a second and ride the rough patch past the stairs and carry on from there.
Tbh, the steps look like they have a fairly low rise, making it possible to ride through them, and they provided a bike guide on the left for people to walk their bike along if the incline is too steep. Maybe not perfect but I'd say it's a decent design, the only problem is that it doesn't serve people in wheelchairs or similar mobility devices well.
Hooray, bike accessibility means wheelchair accessibility... Oh, wait...
Well. A ramp would trigger ADA & have to be ADA Accossible In doing so, the Ramp layout would refore several times the amount of materiel & Planning (aka- Cost). Perhaps any cyclists wanting a ramp could take up a collection to fund the req'd upgrades.
I'd ride those, they aren't steep. Show me someone that is my age that wouldn't have ridden those ASE a kid. My kids would have. Not right perse but walk your bike down a flight is all. Also as a multiuse path, this slows cyclists down (myself include, I'd still ride it at 50). Promotes safety as it looks to be on a good downgrade.
If I were walking on that sidewalk, I would throw that sign into the road way.
Either parked cars are blocking the road, or that car is going the wrong way.
I was looking at a video with a driving instructor in Britian and the roads like this all over, where there was only one lane for both directions. People had to look ahead see that someone was coming from the other direction and pull over until they pasted and then go the other direction on the same lane. There was even a case by a school where they purposely blocked one lane to force people to share the lane in both directories to get them to slow down where there was a curve right into where the kids crossed.
Load More Replies...I think the problem is that instead of putting the sign on the street to make it clear for the drivers it´s on the sidewalk to block pedestrians instead that have nothing to do with whatever is on the sign.
Load More Replies...it can't go sny other place without obstructing traffic. It's better to block a sidewalk people can easily get around than blocking traffic and parking. Let your urbañ dislike of car aside
No. It's not easy to get around. Notice the extreme lack of dropped kerbs. That's a major, spoon-sapping diversion for a wheelchair user.
Load More Replies...Many of the massive mistakes that you can see in the images in this list seem obvious to most of us. So it’s sometimes mind-boggling to see actual professionals who are unable to spot their egregious errors before they end up being integrated into the living, breathing body of the city.
There are a few potential explanations for why these mistakes end up being greenlit.
Probably the most likely explanation for bad designs getting approved is simple carelessness. The people who make the plans and approve them might be overworked, burned out, or demotivated.
So they simply do the bare minimum at their jobs, without thinking about the consequences of their actions. Improving the quality of the plans, then, becomes a question of motivating your workforce. You can do that with fair pay, growth opportunities, acknowledging their hard work, etc.
Upvote. This should be much, much higher! 😂

At least they butchered the doorways as well so it all matches.
Load More Replies...At least they've used a lintel in keeping. It looks like a region where you need all the daylight you can get
They would have been better putting wide sill at the bottom in place of some of the stone and reusing the removed stone to get rid of the old lintel above. They would also have been much better getting a door the right width for the opening. It could be really nice!
Load More Replies...we live in a small hhouse with tiny windows. our living room has one small window and is VERY dark. If we want to make the window bigger, its gonna look slightly silly like this. its also going to be very expensive so we dont bother.
Would have been better with the original window, and 2 separate side panels.
Alternatively, the architects, planners, and engineers might not have the necessary experience or skills to make the right calls. There are no silver bullet solutions to this problem, aside from hard work, education, and good mentorship.
However, that requires a lot of effort from the individual in terms of research and editing. On top of that, it means that they need to be in an environment where they have lots of support from their colleagues.
Everyone makes mistakes, sure. But those errors shouldn’t be approved just because they're the cheapest or easiest options. Before you finalize any plans or designs, it’s a good idea to run them by your colleagues, professors, or even your family and friends. They can give you some honest feedback. But you have to be open to taking criticism. It’s a skill that can get you far in life.
"If somebody wants to make it this way. It's not aesthetic but it wouldn't bother me and I wouldn't complain, maybe make a lighthearted joke every now and then. The roaring BMW that's 90% grill or a fire bowl fetish with guaranteed offensive smells is much more annoying."
Translation: You do you, boo. It's not exactly aesthetically pleasing but it wouldn't bother me and I wouldn't complain about it - maybe just make a teasing joke. What bothers me more is a BMW that's 90% front grille or someone with a stinky fire pit fetish.
I think that some people have the idea that if a house has a shitload of peaks that makes it a Tudor. You ought to see some of the c**p that real estate agents call cape cod.

Why didn't they just run the down pipes down the sides in the corners? So weird.
This way is probably cheaper. 🙄 They could have at least painted the pipes the same color as the bricks to make them less obvious.
Load More Replies...This is absolutely depressing, it's kind of leaving me feeling down and spout.
Man, that house is so plain and dull that I think the weird pipe actually gives the house some much needed personality!
At least they have a pipe, it looks like you'd be exiting the building straight into Niagara falls Everytime it rains
You might be so close to the designs that you miss something extremely obvious. Asking for feedback on your designs is similar to asking someone to read through an important essay. The other person looks at the entire project from a different perspective.
They might notice that you’ve made an unintentionally silly design decision somewhere, just like they might spot that you’ve misspelled the title on the cover page of your essay. Having people act like your personal focus group is invaluable.
This is an absolute crime! A bay brings in so much light in comparison to a flat window, and this is as ugly as sin!
They do, but they can also be very badly insulated. I have a wooden bay and when we opened it up to install cladding, discovered that there was neither a plywood backing nor any insulation AT ALL! I was able to see the bolts holding my radiator to the wall!! Now been done properly and it does feel much warmer!

In New Zealand all the windows open outwards. No snow to block them. To me these windows are just replacing potentially rotten timber. Unfortunately they did not choose to keep to the original design when they did it.
Load More Replies...huh? why would anyone do that? make your living room smaller... if theres a problem with the bay you might as well renovate it for the same cost.

The upper part of the window looks like it can clear the railing. Maybe it's so junior doesn't fall out the window when it's open? Makes it difficult to clean from the outside though.
Load More Replies...I thought the windows were meant to be able to open inwards like a door so you can let more fresh air in?
Load More Replies...And the bottom support is overkill as no one will ever stand on the upper framework...
Load More Replies...I'd call it a "bugger to clean". How do you get to the outside of that bottom panel to clean it?
It's just an upstairs window that can open lower down too so the rail is there to stop people from falling. Very common in the UK.
That's prison style: difficult to escape with many bars and the windows can hardly be opened.
I’d guess it’s not meant as a balcony not to prevent break-ins, but as liability insurance should someone fall out. Maybe someone did fall out & they “fixed” the possibility of it happening again. Plain, flush bars give the wrong impression, whereas a fake non-balcony seems more aesthetically pleasing.
I once booked a hotel room that boasted a balcony and this was what they meant.
You'll get spirited away. If you manage to find your way back to the tunnel, don't look back until you're all the way out.

To be fair, that shovel went down in front of the machine and was completely covered when the machine went past. It wasn't until some time later that the asphalt cracked away from it and exposed it.
OCD is more likely to make you late for everything because you had to walk back to check if you locked your front door 6 times. My neighbour across the hall has it, and sometimes he randomly has anxiety about it. Then he texts me if I can check his door, and I send a video of myself manhandling the door handle. Load More Replies...About 25 years ago I spent 42 days in the hospital and three months at home on a picc line due to black mold. I’m allergic to sulfa drugs & the z-pack, so specialists from 4 different countries had to be consulted to find a treatment that would work. They ended up using a combo of antibiotics that were mostly phased out in the 80s to kill the infection, which had to be imported from India & Sweden as there were none on store anywhere else. I very nearly died because of this s**t. This happened in Netherlands at a cottage on my grandparents property that we were restoring.
Not that I doubt you, but why would they give antibiotics for a fungal infection?
Load More Replies...In keeping with the title of the main post, why is this the architects fault?
Because this is Bored Panda and titles don't mean much around here.
Load More Replies...Fun fact from a water damage restoration tech: mold colour doesn't mean much. It's all bad. Green, white, pink, black, brown, any colour of mold is bad. Black is generally considered more likely to be toxic, but it's no guarantee. Any mold is bad mold. In Canada, if it's more than 100 sq ft of area, special certification is required for work to proceed, and SCBA gear is usually required
black mold is becoming a huge problem in a lot of the UK, because people on lower incomes etc can't afford to heat their homes because the cost is just too high, but the government doesn't give a damn, even when the elderly are dying in their own homes of hypothermia because they're too scared to heat their homes because of the costs. :(
A very San Francisco song! I grew up hearing/singing this song living a few miles from the actual little boxes on the hillside.

Ah, that would be because it's painted ice cream colours, spotted that straight away/s

Do you shake your fist too or is that a separate deck on another wall?
Load More Replies...That's more a balcony.... what, are we putting on a production of Romeo and Juliet? 😉
I wish I actually had something like this, preferably bigger but it's better than having to go out in my car. Especially today, since we are in the middle of snow storm.

I think this is in uk and was in the paper recently. It was all grass previously and locals are furious.
Well if the locals want to cut the grass for them and maintain it then that would be just fine and dandy. This sort of thing usually happens when people can no longer maintain the garden themselves and can't afford to keep paying someone to do it for them. I've seen it done better with gravel and a few small evergreen trees.
Load More Replies...In a city nearby they have an old part of the town, which is about 80 to 90 years old. The houses there did have relatively big green gardens, because they were houses for fishermen and factory workers, so people could grow their own vegs and fruit. The sewer pipes for rain water and wastewater were redone at some point in the 60s, to cope with people getting washing machines and used to shower daily. All was well, until the entire neighbourhood decided about 10 years ago that they wanted "easy to maintain" gardens. The green went, concrete came. Result: People complaining about the heat in summer, noise echoing all year round and during thunderstorms the water cannot go anywhere anymore and floods everything, including the basements. Now they complain and request redoing of the sewer pipes, which costs hundreds of thousands.
I totally see what people are saying and I get that it's not great, but as someone who struggles with lots of outdoor allergies and a black thumb, plus the cost of upkeep for a lawn, sometimes you have to do what you have to do to make it look at least presentable. It's that or an overgrown lawn with weeds that people complain about. So I personally see both sides here.
For people who hate mowing the lawn and are allergic to plants and trees.
A complete waste of land and landscape. If the house were built in the corner of the property (left picture, near the green in the lower right) then the area north of the house could be a private garden, AND the driveway could be a throughway (enter nose in, exit nose out, no need to reverse).
I’m hoping that this is one of those misleading estate agent photographs, where the actual barren area is only a quarter of the size.
"A hand made, fitting window will cost you €2590, a pvc will cost you €750.."
There are ways to install modern, well-sealed windows and keep the historical ones as decorative panes. You just need to get someone who actually knows what they're doing, and maybe pay more for custom windows inside of these that look pre-made.
Load More Replies...It looks like it can be easily put back to the original, so could be worse. And the red looks good
"You will get great insulation value! No one will see any difference, we have nice fittings!"
Why satanic? Because of the guy with a pitchfork? Cardinals wear predominantly red, it's worn by most clergy during Holy Week, usually used during Red Mass, feast days, & during the main sacrament of Confirmation. According to the Catholic church, "red is the symbol of Love, Charity, sacrifice and martyrdom."
Load More Replies...Many of these Victorian hospitals had quite pretty facades, but the interiors are not fit for purpose. They have tried to preserve some of the frontage but with a more modern building behind.
If you're going to destroy most of the building and just wear part of its pretty skin to hide a s****y building behind it like a building leatherface, just build a new building and make it architecturally pretty. This is not preserving the frontage, this is destruction.
Load More Replies...Was a psychiatric hospital that shut down, suffered numerous fires, rebuilt as houses. Not all bad.
It’s visually horrible. Lazy design that paid no attention to what was there already.
Load More Replies...Cane Hill Hospital was a psychiatric hospital in Coulsdon in the London Borough of Croydon. The hospital motto was "Aversos compono animos" (I bring relief to troubled minds). The hospital was built in the 1880s, but from the 1960s its use was starting to decline and it eventually closed completely in the 2000s. Basically it was an 'asylum for the insane' and with more modern 'thinking' it became redundant. Would you prefer it to remain what's colloquially known as a 'loony bin' or provide housing instead?
Makes it easy to tell delivery/taxi drivers where you live though
Elderly lady, probably not fotr to look after a big rear garden, bit has a nice one at front. it's in Leeds, UK
Acres of road to park on and they still park on the pavement! Hope that paving is permeable…
In my ex council housing estate from the 1940s/50s there's room to park one car outside each house on one side of the road. There is no parking on the other side of the road, and the whole estate is like that. Pavement parking is unavoidable.
Load More Replies...This is a show home in the UK. This is how they keep it protected whilst it's being used to show people around. You can see construction in the background. When they finally sell it at the end of the development the fence will be removed.
Ah yes, winter. The season where the promised architecture style changes from glass walkways to airplane gangplanks. Where small glass buildings turn into open gazebos, new giant building sprout where none once stood, where lawns turn to concrete, and where roads disappear.
Load More Replies...It doesn't look like this would need joist hangers at all... obviously not upside down... but even right way round why??
The rafters continue so hangers aren't necessary for hanging the load, but because they also resist uplift and provide lateral stability there could be a reason to use them (or hurricane ties). Of course the only thing these will do it make it more difficult to do the finish work.
Load More Replies...This is just sad honestly. I'm the daughter of a framer and grew up helping my dad build decks and what not on the weekends. It's shocking to see what supposed "professionals" end up doing to cut corners or whatever. The poor unexpecting homeowner is going to end up paying so much more in the long run never mind hoping it holds up safety wise. 🤦♀️
It could also been at a risk of falling? And that the room for root growth was c**p, it's was usually not the best growing conditions that older trees was given back when planted? All hard surfaces with no rainwater going into the ground. I'm not saying this was the case, but we can't just say it's always what we think is the easy reason, and not understand other reasonings and other implications of not removing/removing this tree.
Even if that was so, they decided to build two parking spaces instead of planting a new one (with improvwd growing space). So the message *Cars:2 Trees:0" still stands.
Load More Replies...So sad. Trees are a proven way to improve the environment in cities and towns. Boo...
I hate it when local government cuts down trees for 'safety' reasons but then don't plant anything in its place. There is a road not far from my location that had beautiful Silver Birch trees that lined the road, so many have been removes and not even a single shrub or bush planted to replace them.
I have that dilemma where I live. We have some nice silver birches that have been in nearly 30 years. However their roots are starting to interfere with building foundations and they will have to come down eventually. Getting enough of their roots out that we can actually replace them with something else is going to hard work for somebody. We will however be putting something back in their place, though probably something that won't grow quite so tall!
Load More Replies...I live in Montreal and the city is aggressively doing the opposite. I love it. They're taking 2 parking spots off every street and turning it into greenspace. But the best part is every wide sidewalk is being cut into every ~5 meters so they can add more trees and plants. And removing some parking to add bicycle lanes. We have great Metro, and if you're insistent on being a polluter, too bad, sacrifices must be made, and pressure applied to make this place better
The biggest surprise in that pic is that the gas sniffing ash soles didn't park on and block the sidewalk. "Nobody was walking when I parked, duh! That makes it okay!!!"
Luton Town FC main entrance. Promoted to Premier League and things had to change for public safety.
It almost is. Article about it, though it's The Sun so barely better than tabloid: https://www.thesun.ie/money/11126132/neighbours-hate-newbuild-w***y-wonka-home/
Load More Replies...The question is: how does that car get there? How can they drive away?
is that an addition to the brick house? Or just someone having to make do with an awkwardly small plot of land? If it´s the later, eh, not too bad.
These houses are often known as 2 up, 2 down, with the bathroom on the ground floor. They are tiny, and I salute someone thinking 'outside the box'.
How were they allowed to build something that sticks out like a sore thumb? Not exactly in keeping with the style of the streetscape.
Just like out local government, but they constantly talk about how 'green' we all have to be yet they build on local parkland eradicating it and don't redevelop old land that was used as factories over 20 years ago that is still wasteland......but the new houses are built in an area with streets so narrow vehicles park on pavements/sidewalks just so cars, let alone anything bigger can get by
In any such subdivision, all the houses that are built at the same time and look the same are likely to all look tired and outdated at the same time. Especially with the poor standards and design we see so much of.
Look at the byllshot road "design", there's ZERO connection. Look at the two "burbs" that nearly touch in the centre of the picture. They're about 100 metres in a straight line, but to DRIVE from one to the other is about FIVE KILOMETRES. That's nonsense. Related to what I said about another picture (look at the bottom left "burb"), you could build two buildings with ten apartments in each, and the rest of the space could be left for a park. And if ridiculous zoning laws didn't exist, you could have a corner grocery store (fruits, veg, milk, etc.) so people wouldn't have to drive 10km to a mall.
They don't join the estates, because then they'd become a through road for heavy traffic, endangering the children. UK NEEDS more housing. It's not pleasant, but it's the reality. And people want to live in houses, not apartments, look at all the green in those gardens. Why is communal green better than individual green plots? Apartment living is terrible for families
Load More Replies...Not a fail. This type of aesthetic mitigation works very well for preserving the look of old buildings or historical city centers while allowing to bring those old buildings up to modern standards.
Yay for sticky backed plastic! (UK children's programme in the 60s couldn't say Fablon because it was advertising, so some genius at the BBC came up with the workaround)
This one isn't so bad, if you weren't really paying attention you probably wouldn't notice it.
It defeats the function of the HVAC unit. Its a fan mounted on a box that is supposed to be open on all 4 sides to force air over the heat exchange fins. They've blocked up the sides so no air can go over the fins.
It's printed textured vinyl. Super cheap, long lasting and easily replaced. You can install it with a couple strips of double-sided tape, if done properly will last a decade or so.
Load More Replies...Well, it is generally considered improper to just leave your unit exposed for everyone to see.
They tend to have a 'clubhouse' on the bottom, and a viewing area for races on the top. Looks like a boat (covered with blue tarp) in the foreground.
Load More Replies...Third floor? Or is this a thing where the first floor is the ground level or what it was? (Forgotten and not googling) 🫢🙃
Yup, the ground floor is the first floor, first floor is the second floor, and second floor is the third floor. Confused me as well when I first moved to the UK.

The person who designed this must have been thinking outside the box.
I think this is lovely in sort of whimsical way. :) would live there.
This makes me think of what we used to call greyhound skirts - super mini skirts that "chase the hare/hair"
Is someone just whingeing about parking space for houses? It doesn't even look excessive. Not beautiful, but they rarely are.
Absolutely - so 5 year olds can run into them
Load More Replies...This looks like one of those lift things that pops up in the sidewalk to take freight into the basement. We had those in the Detroit area in front of the older buildings. Really a surprise when you're strolling along a suddenly the sidewalk pops open and a dude appears on a little platform.
A good idea, unfortunately looks like he's surfing on an overturned car lol
Load More Replies...If you roll your car in this area people will twerk on it. It's an odd solution, but if it works for them I guess...
Not sure what the complaint is, to appear to have public transportation and a shelter in which to wait
because 60 years ago this was probably a solid, fully weatherproof brick or stone-built structure, with full time staff on hand to give advice and provide protection, a good coal fire, toilets, and comfortable (and crucially, supervised- safe) seating in the waiting room. Today it's draughty, will be covered in grafitti, and will stink in various quantities of weed, beer and p**s and the nearest human presence will be 100 miles way in an call centre (assuming the "call point" hasn't been vandalised).
Load More Replies...I doubt that building is old enough for that to be relevant.

Really good for traffic in general I think! And what do they mean by 'gateway' ?
Load More Replies...If designed correctly, they are great. We have a couple here that have stop signs at each entry way!
Smart årse op is suggesting the owner has put too many things on the house.
