People Are Posting Funny And Cute Photos Of Their Newfoundlands, And It’s Crazy How Massive They Are
Newfoundlands are known for the massive size and large coats, but if you take a closer look, you will discover they are just gentle giants. Out of the large dog breeds Newfoundlands top the chart as the 5th largest in the world standing at between 27-30 inches tall and weighing as much as 150 pounds. Add to their height the thick double coat that covers them, and they appear even larger. The big dog breed, as the name suggests, comes from the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Fisherman in the area needed dogs who could aid them on board, and with their natural ability to swim due to their partially webbed feet, Newfoundlands were their best choice. The big dogs kept warm by their fur, were strong enough to save a grown man from drowning. This kind of loyalty has made them ideal pets to their families, who, as you will see from this list, have had to make a little extra room in their homes.

History is filled with famous Newfoundlands. In 1802 Lewis and Clark brought along a Newfoundland named Seaman for their 8,000-mile trek across America. The large dog earned his place on the expedition as a hunter and guard dog and even saved their lives against a rogue buffalo.
When The Lap Is Too Small For You But You Don't Mind Because You Are A God Boy
While these fluffy dogs have made a name for themselves with their survival and rescue skills, they have also been able to adapt to help in the home. Their sweet and gentle nature with children has even earned them the title of the "nanny dog." For example a Newfoundland named Brumus was documented to have been the "nanny dog" for Senator Robert F. Kennedy and his wife's 11 children - just like in Peter Pan.

But even these adorable dogs need to romp and play. They have an enormous lung capacity, which helps with water rescue but also means they might wear you out before they even begin to get tired.
Just A Newfoundland Taking His Pony For A Walk
If you plan on getting a Newfoundland it's important to do your research and prepare your home for lots and lots of drool. As very athletic, huge dogs with a large coat this is how they keep cool.
This Is A Newfoundland Dog. Not A Bear
Newfoundlands gain 100 pounds within the first year of their life, which means lots and lots of dog food. Luckily their metabolism slows after that as well as how many calories they need.

Grooming is another important aspect of Newfoundland care. Their enormous waterproof coat sheds frequently and must be brushed regularly. In addition your dog should be taken for regular nail trims to prevent the feet from splaying under their enormous weight.

Sure! Big dogs are usually more gentle than the small ones. They have nothing to prove.
The small one, his tail looks down and his ears are back, he is not fully comfortable yet but it's understandable given the size difference.

Straight Not Giving A F***
These curious, silly dogs are one of the smartest breeds. Their brains mixed with their unique swimming abilities are why Newfoundlands are still used as rescue dogs and lifeguards.
Thought A Bear Broke In. Nope, Just A Newfie
Even with their sweet nature many Newfoundlands find themselves in need or adopting or fostering because their original owners' weren't prepared for the amount of care that goes into raising a dog this large, so it's always important to research first.

I would just love the ability to have one of these beautiful animals. Sadly, live in apartment with "no -pets" clause and no garden. :(
These dogs do have health issues. They're prone to eye and ear infections and have to have both constantly kept clean...and believe me, cleaning a Newfie's ears is thoroughly disgusting. Ear wax that could fill a swimming pool. Yech. ...///... They also are prone to heart disease and arthritis as they age and tend to have short life spans. A 9 year old Newfie is a geriatric dog.
Ears= yuck - one of my boxers had a chronic yeast skin problem, paws, muzzle creases, ears. Tried everything to clear it up. When she was half asleep every evening I would be gently removing the icky brown stuff from her ears trying not to wake her up. Bless her, she was so patient.

Just 17? There are about 340 breeds recognized by FCI and then a massive number of breeds that havn't been reconized by them, for example the Swedish White Elkhound. You need to get yourself a bigger house. ;)

Contrary to what many people seem to believe, you do not need an especially large home to have a dog of a large breed. You need to get outside for proper walks!
I met a Newfoundlandoodle yesterday. Gorgeous dog! His black coat was curly, like a poodle, but he was as big as a Newfoundland. Very friendly.
The Newfoundland dog IS NOT from Newfoundland. It is a English breed based on the now extinct Newfoundland Water dog. The black and white colours are called Landseer's. The Labrador retriever is also not from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador but also a English breed. How do I know this? I am from Newfoundland...
You may be from the rock but you are mistaken on your history. Both dogs ARE from newfoundland. The Labrador was taken to England where the breed standard was developed to the dog that has become the no.1 dog in the world we know and love today. The lab was known as ‘the lesser newfoundland dog’.

yep. You don't decide if the dog is a lap dog, the dog does. My Newfie loves to do "legs" which is when he passes through my legs. Thank goodness he is a small one but he still sweeps me up sometimes. (I got the runt of the litter)

Load More Replies...I have a 200# Newfie named Tank, and a 165# Newfie named Tsunami ( she is hyper Newfie too) and a 185# Rottweiler, Husky, Malamute cross, named Mud along with 2 cats. They love being in the snow and cold but also love hanging with their humans. Car rides are awesome, yes all three at the same time. And they LOVE people. Yes, they do eat quite a bit for sure. Tank LOVES his vegetables and will eat a 3# bag of broccoli or cauliflower with each meal.
I have 2 newfies and these are my 6th one I have had. I love these giant babies!
I couldn't handle a dog that size, but oh, I'd love to visit one and cuddle with it.
Sweet dispositions, loves children, worries alot about family and extended family. Ambition is to take care of everyone.
Wonderful loving companions and they love to work, and play and cuddle!
My father in law owned a Mastiff and I thought that would be a huge breed :-)
We used to have a woman with two Newfies that would bring them into our Groom Shop for a wash and brush out. These dogs were 150lbs each. Our groomer...120lbs and 5' 2". She always asked us to schedule the dogs on the last appointment of the day because she'd be exhausted after grooming them. But Finn and Sara were two of the best dogs we had. And when the owner would walk them out to her SUV, the customers from the beauty salon next door would come running out thinking she had bears on leashes. But in all fairness, they did look like big bear rugs when they laid down with their head between their paws.
I'd love to convince a friend to get one so I can visit and cuddle... and avoid having to invest in huge dog poo bags :)
My region is warm and humid, typical tropical climate. And all the dogs I love are meant for cooler climates.. huskies, Alaskan Malamute, Newfies, St Bernards, Samoyeds.. what do I do.. 😭😭😭
My mixed breed is 100 pounds but one of his neighbourhood 'girlfriends' is a Newfie, probably 150 pounds, she is such a sweet girl and goes completely crazy when she sees my handsome boy! Ah, puppy love! Haha
How do you even safely drive with one of those in a car?? You can't have it in the back seat, it's going to crush everyone in the front seat in a collision, you can't have it in the front seat, it's going to crush everything in the front seat in a collision, and you cant have it in a crate, because that crate would have to be the size of a one man jail cell or something, Insane!
There are seatbelts for dogs. Like the allsafe-harness.
