Sometimes, reading some interesting information at work is just what you need to take your brain cells for a walk and get the creative juices pumping. Fortunately, that’s exactly what the /r/FunFacts subreddit provides - safe-for-work interesting facts!

If your boss catches you scrolling this post or the aforementioned subreddit, consider telling them that this is just what you needed to jog your productivity. In fact, there’s a new fact for that as well - when your brain learns new information, it forms new neuronal connections, and the more it does this, the better it gets at it. That’s called neuroplasticity.

It is! My family's housecleaning business donates our services to this charity :) It's really great! They DON'T just donate cleaning time to women, though - they donate to all genders of cancer patients, with any sort of cancer - and they donate to people in hospice care and recovery care too, not just people in active treatment.

Seeing as women vastly outnumber men on average when it comes to being the parent/partner who takes care of the majority of household cleaning chores.... no, no it is not sexist. That aside, this "fact" is worded incorrectly - Cleaning For A Reason donates time to all genders of cancer patients, not just women with cancer. My family's housecleaning business has donated our services to this charity before, and not all of our recipients were female.

In Australia, if you have a variety of medical conditions or disabilities you are probably eligible for free cleaning services through allied health services.

The process by which your brain actually learns these facts is an interesting and not entirely intuitive one. Let’s dig in.

Most people know that our brain consists primarily of neurons. These cells link to one another with synapses, forming a dense network of connections that send signals through the brain and onwards throughout our bodies. At a basic level, these are the cells that embody the information we learn.

It's also a horrible trap. Trust me. First you have two Guinea Pigs. But then one dies and you're a good person so you get another little Guinea Pig to keep the older one company one company. Then the older one dies. So you get another. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. I've been waiting for a double heart attack for seventeen years and counting. I've been watching a lot of shows with flashing lights. No heart attacks so far. I actually think they dig manga now.

And people made fun of him. He - or someone else - mentioned the analogy the periodic systems carries in regard to music, where each octave, the same tones and intervalls repeat, but with twice the frequency, ... but any F# will have an A as minor-third, so given an F# as base, any and every A is the minor third and acts as such, as well as any and every C# is and acts as a fifth and so on ... Silicone can be made into the same structures as C in a molecule (it's not that truly EVERYTHING could work out with C replaced by Si, but ... some ... 4 vacancies on the outer shell, the results thereof, ... interaction with mass and bond energies cause the deviation, ...) and such, ... people are said to have barked "then, let your atoms sing a song for you!" in an attempt to make fun of what he discovered. Oh my, people suck. People really suck - at least, the benefit of not being disproven should be granted to every idea ... and, keep in mind - at the time this was disregarded by other chemists, the vast majority of even biologists were still believing in a creation myth being the origin of life, species and a never discovered soul that is said to be exclusively issued to humans. Which ... well ... well ... THAT, fun may be made of unhesitantly, because funny is the best this could ever even dare to attempt to wish to be.

When your neuronal connections fire in certain patterns, those connections are strengthened and reinforced, and those reinforced pathways become the basis of all of our knowledge.

This is, of course, a gross oversimplification. Our brains contain lobes and segments that are specialized towards different parts of our thinking processes, but at a basic level, we have neural pathways criss-crossing those regions of the brain that form the basis for what we know.

The 52-card playing deck is based on the original 78-card Tarot deck. Fun fact: since there are 78! (78 factorial, about 1.132428e+115) combinations of cards in a Tarot deck, that means it's vanishingly unlikely that any two people will ever have exactly the same fate. You are truly unique!

"All of the surviving black robins are descended from 'Old Blue', giving little genetic variation among the population and creating the most extreme population bottleneck possible. However, this does not seem to have caused inbreeding problems, leading to speculation that the species has passed through several such population reductions in its evolutionary past, and has lost any alleles that could cause deleterious inbreeding effects."

Neuroplasticity, then, is our brain’s ability to learn new information and revise things we’ve learned before. The greater your neuroplasticity, presumably, the more likely you will be to remember more of the cool facts on this list!

In reality, that’s not the only thing that determines your capacity to learn. Learning can be reinforced by many other factors, a couple of significant ones being repetition and emotion. This one sounds like common sense when you think about it - you’re more likely to remember the facts that shocked you, made you smile, or interested you the most.

I remember reading an article about this. It mentioned a plant called White Baneberry, or the Doll's Eye Plant, it got it's name due tp berries that resemble eyes. I eventually got to see one in the wild, whcih was very cool.

The males (the females don't have much to speak of) use them to fight other males and to scent-mark their territory by using them to hold on to thin trees and rub their preorbital glands against them. The teeth are movable and can be pulled inward to eat and outward for aggressive encounters. Water deer - Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_deer

It was find out that newborn babies can go in an hibernation of sorts if left alone and cold, to save energy. That must have been a great survival skill in the stone age, for example if the mother died during the birth and no other nursing mother was available.

The reason that people believe they attack humans is because Teddy Roosevelt visited South America and the locals starved the Piranhas beforehand and when they threw an animal carcass into the river the Piranhas devoured it.

Piranhas were a legit fear when I was a child in the late 70’s. My friends and I were scared of them. We lived in upstate New York, by the way. And only swam in pools. But any natural body of water could have piranhas or quick sand. I have no idea where these fears came from.

I seem to remember a ton of movies back then where people were constantly falling into quicksand and being eaten by piranhas. It was a dangerous time for kids! We were sure that those terrifying fish would swim upstream from South America to Lake Ontario and decimate New York State!

My stepdad almost lost a finger to one. He was blind and one day, walking across our gravel driveway, stepped on what I thought was a large boulder. Not wanting it to damage a car, he bent down to pick it up to toss it off the driveway. Then *snap* 🐢. He came in the house with it still dangling off his fing "um... need a little help here"

There are different breeds of piranhas so this statement isn't quite true. There are some breeds that are very into eating meat like humans and if they smell blood, it makes them go crazy just like what you see in the movies. Whoever posted this so-called fun fact, needs to know their facts first before trying to tell the world and someone gets badly hurt.

Makes me think of the scene in an Ice Age movie. Sid the sloth was bathing three baby dinosaurs in a river that had piranha in it. One looked underwater, saw the piranha (that in turn saw it), opened their jaws, and then the dinosaur opened IT'S jaws, and the fish all panicked and ran! Hahahaha

Bluetooth was not a viking, he was a christian king. While one theory about his name claims he had a love for blueberries, which I find very wholesome, another more crass theory is that he just had bad teeth and bruised gums.

Viking was a job, not a religion or ethnicity. You could be viking and christian at the same time. Or believe in norse religion. Or both. You could be norse, saami, or even mongolian (there were mongolian vikings!). Most people didn't actually viking for a living, they were farmers. Simple, boring farmers. Just went on viking when money was running low.

Why not? But for real: "The Bluetooth company name was taken from the nickname of a Viking king who ruled during the 10th century and is credited with originally uniting Scandinavia." Bluetooth makes wireless connections possible, so why not name a company after a king that united people? https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/bluetooth-etymology/ and https://www.bluetooth.com/about-us/bluetooth-origin/

Well, among other things, the tusks are used for breaking up sea ice when the narwhals get stuck far from an open channel. Presumably polar bears, which have the opposite problem, would hate narwhals if they could grok what was happening.

Actually, if you know the weight of the coin, how high to toss it, and how many spins it will make on the way down, you can foretell 100% of the time if the coin will land heads or tails. There are magicians who can do this, so never enter into a coin tossing contest with a magician. Or anyone else who knows physics.

well in my city to build a park bathroom (3 urinals and 3 stalls mens side, 5 stalls womens side, and some sinks) it took 1.5 years of committee meetings and approvals, and 1.5 years to build, and cost $3 million. And people wonder why NYC roads are bads. My local library took the government 7 years and $9 million (when it was supposed to be 3 years and $7 million) for a bland building that already is having issues (less than 8 years old now) that could have been built in 2 year and $1 million dollars if it wasnt a government project.

Yet, despite being 75 Million Years Older, it is much more common to find a Stegosaurus skeleton than a T. Rex skeleton. (I'm guessing part of the reason is because herbivores are 10x more common than than carnivores).

I always thought Uber should do something like that for drunk people, that way the person can get themselves and their car home without driving while intoxicated.

We have service exactly like that here! It’s not uber, but it works basically how you described - two drivers in one car, one takes you home, other one takes your car home.

I was 12. I feel so old XD Hercules was released in 1997, when I was 15 and way ~too cool~ to watch Disney cartoon movies, so I never saw it XD

I think they may have cancelled that due to massive backlash. However, Air New Zealand is now weighing people, completely anonymously and voluntarily, before they get onto flights. They're doing a survey to update their data on average passenger weight, so they can calculate the total weight of their planes correctly. https://www.npr.org/2023/05/30/1178838387/air-new-zealand-weighs-passengers
