You know that famous picture Collins took of Buzz and Armstrong on the moon with the earth behind right? He told his daughter it was a picture of every single person except him. Makes me tear up to think of that.

To learn more about why these memes are so popular, we contacted Dr. Constantina Katsari, who has a Ph.D. in economic history and a long and successful career in UK academia.

"I always thought that history is instrumental in the formation of logical thinking," Dr. Katsari told Bored Panda.

"Without it, critical analysis remains deficient. At the same time, history teaches good citizenship and enhances political instincts. Above all, history helps us distinguish truth from lies. As a seeker of truth, I especially value the skills I acquired over the decades."

I was about to take out on a first date my dentist's assistant. In her apartment, we were talking about her boss, and she sneered, "Do you know that he's a Jew?" I pointed to the big, big picture of Jesus she had on the wall and asked "Did you know he's one , too?" The date did not happen.

Indeed. It's crazy how many "good Christians" are deeply offended by the idea... no, the truth that Jesus was a brown man. The literal centuries of propaganda in European religious art portraying Jesus as a light-skinned, fair haired, blue eyed man really worked wonders.

As a native speaker of English, I'd like to say that if you have managed to learn English sufficiently to communicate, and it is your second language, you're clearly not stupid. English is one of the hardest languages to learn, mainly because it's not a language; it's a dozen languages in a trench coat.

There's a line from a Paul O. Williams book that I've always liked, when some guy is getting made fun of because he doesn't speak the language very well. He says, "I speak your language not very good; you speak my language not at all. Which one of us is stupid?"

I hate English articles. They look easy but are actually quite hard. My native language doesn't have them, and a lot of times they don't make much sense to me. To make things even worse, I am an English teacher, so I have to live with them.

Sexual abuse of children sounds too sanitizes. It included rape. Priests raped children, sodomized them and forced other abuse on them. And the church hid them. Moved them around so they could rape more children. Then the church denied it and tried to discredit the victims. When found guilty in court the church plead poverty so as not to have to pay compensation to the victims. No organization has done more to support child rapist than the catholic church.

Dr. Katsari agrees with the popular phrase that history is written by the victors. "After all, most losers are dead, maimed, politically inactive, or otherwise condemned to invisibility," she explained.

However, there are still ways we can get a different perspective on things. "Saying that, we should not forget the value of archaeology that helps us fill in the gaps and gives a voice to non-victors," Dr. Katsari added.

Some Karen at the grocery store yelled at a couple of young Hispanic women, "You're in America, speak English". I asked her straight up, "So if you and your husband were in France, having a completely PRIVATE conversation - you'd be speaking in French, RIGHT?" And of course she sputtered like the f*cking moron she was. I asked her how many languages she spoke, which embarrassed her even further. One of the ladies piped up and said she spoke not only Spanish & English, but also FRENCH!

A big part of German society (including me) didn't think any big war in Europe could be still possible why the army here has quite some problems, because of lacking or old equipment. I have been looking for the link, but they did something similar when Obama was in office. They would ask Conservatives at the "Tea Party" Marches about various items, but claim that Bush or the Republicans did them. They were ALL for them. Happy that those they believed they supported would do such great things! Then they were told they were ALL accomplishments of the Obama Administration. Most just shook their heads and walked away. lol. None changed their minds about Obama being a "muslim, socialist, marxist, communist dictator", though. One of the most viral ones they did was when they asked about "The Affordable Care Act" versus "Obamacare". ALL the conservatives loved the Affordable Care Act and they DETESTED Obamacare. They were then informed that Obamacare the ACA were the exact same thing. Their expressions were priceless.

Interestingly, some philosophers draw attention to the doubts that may be felt when history is compared with different branches of investigation, such as chemistry or biology.

By contrast with such inquiries, the historian's procedure, including the manner in which he conceptualizes his data and the principles of argument he employs, may appear to be governed by subjective or culturally determined predilections that, as a result, are contestable and, therefore, out of place in a supposedly reputable form of knowledge.

Curious - of the multilinguals here… at what age did you start to learn a different language? In the US, they don’t start teaching a second language until about age 14 or 15. Way too late for most students in my opinion. It certainly can be done at that age, but many of us just learn enough to pass the class and then never use it again.

In my case (German) I started to learn my first foreign language (Italian) at age 6 (nowadays it would mostly be English), then English from age 10 on, then a third language (French) from 13 on and then I voluntarily added Spanish at age 15 (only two foreign languages are mandatory for A-levels here). I think the age makes a huge difference when it comes to learning languages, my son and his friends went to multilingual kindergartens and they just soaked up the languages like sponges without any effort. It's crazy.

i remember having a woman who's first language was Spanish, and had a heavy accent when speakign English and was havign trouble with the right verb to use and apologized to me for not speaking better english. I immediately replied, "well i only speak one language, i know you can speak at least 2 so you got me beat already. No need for an apology" i think it shocked her.

Two factors (or more) : (1) In America, you can leave your home, travel for thousands of miles, and arrive in a city that speaks the same language as the one you left. That won't happen in Europe. (2) America has had two historical border countries - Canada, where the dominant language is English, and Mexico, which was separated from most of the US population by a wide desert for a good part of our history. Or as one Texas governor supposedly said about high school foreign language classes, "We go by the Bible here in Texas. If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for Texas!"

I think that one of the reasons the United States is often the poster child for failure to learn another language is that so little emphasis is placed on language learning. I think that there is this pride amongst some people in the United States that English is the lingua franca and therefore there is no need to learn another language. Furthermore, foreign language learning is often introduced so freaking late in the United States, oftentimes in secondary school-- it baffles me that people don't think that children have the mental capacity or maturity to learn a language. One of the best times to start introducing a foreign language is when children are younger as their brains are tiny little sponges. Even translation and interpretation services are seen as a commodity in the United States and linguists are pained peanuts in comparison to their years of study. ~Signed, a disgruntled linguist

One topic that was repeatedly examined in this context was the role of evaluation (specifically, moral evaluation) in historical writing—a subject, incidentally, about which historians themselves are apt to exhibit a certain uneasiness.

Many argue that value judgment can and should be totally excluded from history and, indeed, from social studies as a whole. However, this viewpoint does have its opponents, too.

Bet that was an intense scissoring flight.

Objectors highlight that the language the historian uses, adapted as it is to the assessment and appraisal of human motives and characteristics, makes some degree of evaluation unavoidable.

They argue that, even if the possibility of a drastically revised historical vocabulary allows the ideal of a wertfrei, or objective history, to be theoretically conceivable, such an ideal can scarcely be seriously entertained as a realizable practical goal.

WRONG: the Switzerland doesn't stop be neutral. Neutrality of a country was never a "do nothing" thing, it's more complicated than that. There is a big gap between a "country neutrality" and "perfect/dreamed neutrality". PS: most Swiss people who pretend that Switzerland stops being neutral, are on the far-right spectrum of politics, and pro-putin... that's all.

"As a weightlifter he won the gold medal in the 82.5 kg division at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Between 1923 and 1926 he set eight official world records. In 1924, he became the first person to clean and jerk more than 400 pounds, using the non-revolving barbells of that time. In 1928 he set two World Records; a clean and jerk of 360 lbs and a snatch of 253 lbs. In 1930, he became the first person to complete an overhead lift of the Apollon Railway Car Wheels, an awkwardly-shaped 166 kg (366 lb) barbell-shaped set of train wheels used by the stage strongman Louis Uni, and the predecessor of "Apollon's Axle". Dr. Katsari agrees with these folks. "There will never be absolute objectivity in history," she said.

Please remember that historians can't publish speculation, and things like sexuality of a person or medical conditions of a person have to be evidenced explicitly by the person themselves. Without the person themselves having explicitly written that they are "in love" with this other person, we cannot say that they were lovers. Our modern concept of being gay is very different to its view historically - two mediaeval monks could be literally boning each other but would deny being gay because it is an expression of brotherly love and not lust.

Considering Russian troops drove right past multiple signs warning they were entering the Chernobyl restricted area and how dangerous it was, and proceeded to not only fire on the plant, but dig in the highly irradiated soil, reading signs doesn't appear to be their strong suit

The main reason that the Roman Empire fell was because the ever-expanding use of slave labor left the average Roman citizen unable to provide for themselves. Now look at the US, with stagnating wages and corporate greed, and tell me things aren't headed the same way. It doesn't matter how much money you have if it's all worthless in the end.

So if you find yourself disliking some of these memes, that's good. Emotional and moral conflict is an opportunity for growth.

You can deal with this inner uneasiness by educating yourself on the topic more. "Academic literature is the golden standard," Dr. Katsari suggested. "There are some excellent public historians around that do an amazing job, though."

Blood from horseshoe crabs is essential for many drug, implant and environmental safety tests -- but blood harvesting, together with capture for bait and impacts from climate change and habitat destruction, is threatening populations of these "living fossils." A review published in Frontiers in Marine Science highlights that these continuing threats will detrimentally affect the surrounding ecosystem, including migratory shorebirds who rely on horseshoe crab eggs for food. To enable a sustainable harvest of their blood for the biomedical industry -- which currently is entirely dependent on these creatures for drug and environmental safety testing -- alternative tests should be explored in conjunction with better harvesting and conservation strategies.

Just to let you know, the middle eastern countries that the USA interfered with can be just big of a deal as Ukraine is Right now, if the media decides to make it a big deal. On the other hand, Ukraine can be just as little of a deal as the middle eastern countries if the media decides to not care about it.

The moon landing was faked by NASA with the help of Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick, a well known film-maker was a stickler for getting it right. He insisted on going on location to the Sea if Tranquility and shot the fake landing on the moon to better fool us into thinking it was real../snark

As someone who's been in a long term relationship with an archaeologist for the past 20 years, (and has consequently had to hear all about it), having artifacts scattered around in different countries isn't actually the worst thing in the world. If something devastating happens to an area, like a natural disaster or war, at least some of the items get to survive.

Yes, a lot of people don't seem to be aware of the crucial role the British Museum, and others worldwide, performed in the protection and preservation of ancient artefacts, many of which might otherwise have been lost forever.

Tipu Sultan was an Indian ruler. Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign hoped to link up with him, cutting the British Empire in two. But he was killed by the future Duke of Wellington’s army. Tipu’s descendants are two rickshaw pullers, a security guard and a car seat cover vendor.

One of the amazing king and first opposition to British feet on their land. Only if neighboring kings joined him with his campaign against East India Company and didn't joined EIC against him. British rule in India would have been very different, if any. I don't think they even teach him opposing EIC anymore. Furthermore, according to Bollywood if ruler is Muslim they are bad. I am sure BJP government has nothing to do with that *roll eyes*.

The way picture angle is taken and inclusion of base, makes me think these pictures were taken from far away. Possibly from on top of a boat. Not sure how good lenses were back then but something to keep in mind.

Mongolia no longer has a navy since their last ship , the "Sukhbaatar III" was sold to a private investor in 1997. Before that, the ship was stationed on a lake. It was more of a ceremonial reminder that Mongolia had a huge navy in the 13th century. Most of it was sunk when Mongolia tried to invade Japan in 1281.

I must admit it's these timelines that give me great pause for thought moments. It was like when I found out Wyatt Erp and John Wayne had met. How could someone of the Wild West meet a Hollywood actor! History is closer than you imagine.

Especially the Wild West. Remember famed outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and their "Wild Bunch" gang? They committed most of their robberies between 1900 and 1907. That's the same year the RMS Lusitania made her maiden voyage. At that point in time, telephones, movie theaters, airplanes and cars were already well established, if not exactly commonplace.

That same in my country(Nigeria). We've got 3 names like everyone. First name is usually your native name, identifies you as a member of a tribe. The middle name is usually (not always but mostly) foreign not particularly English. Your last name is also native. Shared by members of your family
