Cristiano Ronaldo is the world's most famous athlete and one of the most handsome as well. A bronze Ronaldo bust was unveiled in his native Portugal on March 29th. However, it is seriously creeping people out. Thankfully, the Internet quickly came to the rescue, and memes of the funny fail of a Ronaldo statue started falling from the sky like rain.
Ronaldo is viewed as a hero in his hometown of Funchal, located on the Madeira Islands of Portugal. The city decided to honor him by renaming their local airport the Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport, but the Ronaldo sculpture that they unveiled at the rebranding ceremony was definitely less than honorable. The startling statue is causing online reactions from horror to hilarity, and the memes it has inspired are likely to outlive the legacy of Ronnie himself.
It's been said that Ronaldo was dubbed 'cry baby' by his childhood playmates due to his emotional responses to failure. We can only imagine how he's feeling after the unveiling of this hilarious Cristiano Ronaldo statue.

We have an expression here in Portugal just for this situation, feeling embarrassed for someone else. We say "vergonha alheia", and its translates exactly to being embarrassed for someone else. Lol!

What I don't understand is how these "artists" get away with this c**p. Clearly there is a process in creating one of these sculptures and the client is ALWAYS kept in the loop on progress, ESPECIALLY the VERY person that is being represented in the sculpture... so HOW does something like this happen? Who was "asleep at the wheel", until the very unveiling? I own a sculpture studio http://www.themendous.com/museum-quality and our work is under CONSTANT scrutiny by our management and clientele. There is never a surprise. We recently completed a project where we made an oversized replica of a very iconic celebrity who was personally involved in it's progress from day 1. WHAT GIVES ?!?!

If it were a regular statue, no one would be saying anything. This way Madeira will get a lot of turists just to take a photo next to the statue...not saying it was on purpose, but it will work better then a realistic statue =)
