I had a cat that would catch and bring me a dead mouse and then meow loudly for treats. It was a distinctive meow and I always knew what it meant. The youngster grew up watching him do this. One day she brought something in and announced in the same way. I looked down and she had brought in a leaf. She was so proud of herself. It was the cutest thing. We gave her the reward. She continued to do that for years. We always had dead leaves lying around inside.

You better keep that leaf, too! My baby one night jumps in bed around 2am with me and is purring and head booping up a storm. I scritch his neck and rolled over to go back to sleep. For about 90 minutes he keeps waking me up off and on chasing my toes or something else he's fascinated by. I finally decide that I'm gonna have to give him a bunch of loving so he will stop playing and lay down so I can sleep. I sit up and realize that the entire time he's had a small field mouse in bed with me. It was very alive but shell-shocked into a catatonic state. It was very active once it was released outside, lol. Me on the other hand? Still traumatized and you better believe that I wake up fully and intensely search my bed when Maverick brings me a gift at night. Since then I've had a small beetle or two and random inanimate objects. He ever brings a spider, God help me that'll be the end of me!

Good boi Larry! You are unlike my cat Larry. My cat is an indoor cat, you know the kind. Thinks she's all big and bad. But her arch nemesis approaches. This has been a fight of the ages, birds no problem, squirrels pfft. Even that big crow mocking her is nothing. As autumn nears so does her enemy. Falling leaves. Yes Larry my cat is terrified of leaves. Not the ones on the tree mind you, but the ones that have the audacity to fall. My cat is afraid of fallen leaves lol. Go figure.

That’s great! One of my sweet cats does the same thing, except, with socks! Always socks.. for the longest time I thought it was the dryer stealing them, nope, just my boy and he’s so proud (I am as well). He will even leave a trail of them for me from the laundry room to my bedroom. It cracks me up.

I love it, when an animal can smile! I had a fur baby, brindle pit bull. She was the smartest, most loving fur baby I'd ever had! When I would play with her, and she would lay down for me to roll the ball, she would always smile. Or. Playing in the couch all 90 lbs of her. Would turn upside down, let her top lip flop up, and show her bottom teeth to smile! RIP Sandy, momma misses you.
The digital landscape is saturated with cats. It has been this way from the early beginnings of YouTube to the origins of social media. Our beloved felines continue to be the most universal icons that have inspired some of the very best memes: Grumpy Cat, Chemistry Cat, Smudge the Cat, the list is endless. Today, there are millions of videos and pictures of cats floating around the internet sphere that nurture our furry fascination, and we can never get enough of them. But our fixation on these little critters does raise the question: why are they so special?
To get to the bottom of this question, we reached out to Sally Chamberlain, a UK-based clinical animal behaviorist and author of Power Of The Purr. Feeling extremely passionate about her work, she founded Karma Paws Pet Care where she provides consultations, cat training, and preventive advice.
"Cats are special because, unlike many other domesticated species, they retain many of their wild instincts and have an independent nature. They are beautiful creatures with an air of mystery," she told Bored Panda. "Even though I have studied feline behavior for many years, they can often be quite difficult to understand, and each cat has its own unique personality."

"Domestic cats are descended from solitary hunters, mainly the North African wild cat. They are both predator and prey in the wild which can make them incredibly sensitive animals that sometimes seem aloof, but they can also be very affectionate towards species other than their own."

This is the same look my cat gets when she wakes me up in the middle of the night meowing and zooming around my bed. Why you may ask. She has to, and i mean has to, wake me up and let me know when a stray cat is on my car in the middle of the night. Car alarm, nah. I got a cat alarm. Shes a good girl, but I need my sleep too lol
However, the weird antics and funny shenanigans cats carry out may create a false image about them because, in reality, cats are not dumb by any stretch. "Much of feline behavior is based on the fact that they are solitary hunters by nature. They need to rely on their intelligence to seek out safe places to rest and also find good places to hunt," Chamberlain explained.
The animal behaviorist pointed out that cats are believed to be as intelligent as a human toddler when it comes to understanding human gestures, such as pointing. "Cats also have a sense of object permanence, which is essential in working out that when their prey goes out of sight, it hasn’t gone forever. Cats will wait many hours for the right opportunity to seek out and pounce on their prey, especially if hunting is their only source of food."
Interestingly, they can also be trained in the same way as other animals, such as dogs. Contrary to popular belief, felines can learn to do the things their pet parents want them to do. "By using positive reinforcement, they can learn to do all sorts of things from learning to come when called to giving a 'high five', running through an agility course, and solving food puzzles," Chamberlain told us.

This is my cat Ginger! I was just taking a walk through the neighborhood one day and heard someone calling for ‘bella’, and saw my cat running up to this strangers house. Apparently Ginger had been mooching of these people for months. They even had a cat bed on the front porch for him. 🙄

Omg, I keep having something similar happen to my poor dog! Only it's the dog food that they won't let her to! I got the salmon flavored food last time, and the cars LOVE it. I have to push them out of the way so the poor dog can eat her own food! And even then, they're still shoving their faces in there as well!
Unfortunately, many stereotypes about our feline friends lead to them being underestimated as species. Of course, they sometimes do silly things, but that doesn’t always reflect their intelligence. For example, the expert explained cats can train their humans long before they even notice.
"Cats have unique ways of obtaining food, getting us to open the door, stealing our warm seat, and getting attention and affection. Many cats use what is known as the 'solicitation purr', which is slightly different from their usual purr and can make us feel slightly uncomfortable until we do what they want. This is often accompanied by them staring at us," she added.
When cats feel like their humans fail to provide the things they want or make changes in their home they’re not really keen on, they may take another course of action. "Some cats simply go and live elsewhere by persuading other humans to feed them and give them a warm place to sleep."

If you believe your little goofball is acting cold and indifferent towards your efforts, Chamberlain mentioned they actually do feel affection for their owners, and they show it in several ways. We just need to be aware of them to notice. "Cats can form strong bonds with humans. Domestic cats tend to show affection towards humans in a similar way that they would towards other cats."
"Cats don’t naturally touch one another very often but when they do, it’s mostly rubbing their cheeks or bodies together (allorubbing) or grooming one another (allogrooming). Both of these create a communal scent between the cats so that they can easily identify each other and feel secure in their living environment," she said and added they behave in similar ways towards their humans.

When cats approach you with friendly intentions, their tail will be up and relaxed, and their body and face will seem loose. "The best way for a human to greet a cat is to crouch down and offer the cat a hand with a loose fist, sideways on. This will make the human seem less intimidating and give the cat a choice as to whether or not they wish to initiate physical contact."
"If they rub on the human’s hand, they might want to be stroked," Chamberlain continued. "When it comes to petting, most cats tend to prefer short but frequent petting around their ears, head and neck area. Whereas humans may want to pet their cat for a long period of time and stroke them all the way along their back or even on their belly, but this can be intrusive for some cats, and they might bite or scratch."

Moreover, we can even become better at earning their love ourselves. One way to do this is to give them a sense of choice, consistency, and control. "The more a cat chooses to approach a human to receive affection on their terms, the more likely they are to trust that person and form a bond."
The expert suggested opting for brief eye contact and slow blinks that signal you are not a threat. "Some cats are not keen on physical contact but like to be around you," she added. "Cats like this need you to understand how to give them affection on their terms and plenty of space. You could offer them some play with a wand toy and a few food treats to further reinforce your bond."
"It’s all a matter of considerately finding out what their preferences are. Once a cat has decided that you are their friend, they are likely to be your friend for life."

I swear I knew a guy who basically slept on his face like this, (his tongue wasn't out like this, though!) with his butt high in the air. I was shocked to witness it because I thought only little kids slept like that!
However, while we consider many cat behaviors amusing, these little creatures may have a different idea. “Things that make them jump like placing a cucumber next to them on the floor may seem harmless enough to us but can cause a cat a great deal of stress. Cats tend to jump for this seemingly inexplicable reason because a cucumber resembles a snake, the sight of which is instinctively a threat."
Countless videos where cats make strange sounds or fall off the counter may seem funny at first, but it’s also a sign of them feeling stressed or anxious. "Dressing cats up may also seem cute and funny, but many cats don’t like this as it’s simply not natural or pleasant for them."
"It’s always best to err on the side of caution and be respectful to cats and always bear in mind that the more we ensure their feline needs are met and understood, the better our relationship and feline welfare will be," Chamberlain concluded.

I was visiting friends, and they warned me tat their cat was mean. The poor thing wasn't mean, she just communicated her dislikes thru biting. They said, you don't want to pet er she'll bite you. I showed them that it wasn't true. Just don't mindlessly pet the same spot (I knew this from people mindlessly stroking me to the point it is uncomfortable). Kitty was always so happy to see me when I came over, even jumping up on my lap.

We had a trio of cats that got trapped in our crawl space one winter and absolutely decimated the rodent population in it. When we found out they were in there and let them out, they were so grateful that they began catching all the voles and turned our deck into a warzone by leaving the carcases as thanks. It was super gross but sweet in a morbid sort of way.

I had a kitty that Loved eating baby mice! Adult mice, she just tortured until to dead to run. If I seen a mouse in the house, I would just go get her, set her down where I seen it. I would walk away, and let her do her thing. Always, within just a few minutes, she would come find me, with the mouse in her mouth! She would then, sit down and meow with it in her mouth. It was like she was saying; I got it for you mom! Am I a good girl?! Oh! Yes! You're an amazingly good girl! She wouldn't put it down, until I let her out either. RIP, BC cat, you were the best Kitty ever.

I have to pass my neighbor's window to open the door to my part of the apartments. Dave's cat, around 12am likes to sit in the window, and stare at the same thing every night. I'll tap her through the window, and she'll act like she's really being petted. When I stop, her pupils get really big, and begins to stare at the thing again. One day, I'm going to find out what it is... I've tried, and always fail so far.

My neighbour went to a zoo where a lion was sleeping very close to the bars. She ran a finger across one of its front paws and very nearly lost her hand.

My dream last night involved my highschool drama room that was mixed up with the dance room. But everyone was going up to the drama/dance room (and the geography was way out) to get matching tattoos, but it wasn't tattoos, it was making soba noodles. But sweet. and served as smores. Our old-style thermometer broke. Our cat tried to eat a glass shard from it! The chunk of glass was already in his mouth, he luckily dropped it just as I was about to forcefully dig it out. He also has tried to eat pieces of guitar string and metal wires... And keeps running into our legs and makes us almost fall as we walk. Couldn't survive a minute in the wild...

My husband dropped me off at my moms, miscommunication with us, I didn’t tell I didn’t feed our cat and dog, when he picked me up later, he told me she was acting somewhat agressive, she kept jumping in front of the tv, and knocking stuff over while staring at him, later found out why

And here I am with cats that will keep meowing until they get what they want. This includes hopping on the bed and meowing directly into someone's ear to demand pets even if the person is sleeping; they've got my dad pretty well trained on that front though 😂

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read a long time ago, that when cats get winged, their not supposed to drink milk. Especially, it it's older. I read, it causes digestive problems, and can make a cat really sick.

Yes, milk can give cats violent diarrhea. Actually cow milk is no good for anybody except for the calf. Goat milk is much more digest for us humans.

I had a cat that was very very social. If I had a party or a get together, that cat would go to Every. Single. Person. that was in my house. He would greet them them, sit with them for a bit, purr then move on to the next. People would tell me, I never liked cats but that cat is so sweet and gentle. He was my angel cat and he was the smartest, most social and most gentle cat, you have ever met.

Nah, I hunt down the little f#cker. Almost every time, I end up with a "my cat never lets people pet it, how the heck is the cat purring in your lap already!?!" Buddy's cat that claws EVERYONE that tries to pet her (except him/fiance) hated me the first time, but ever time I went over after, she'd be a drooling, purring mess clinging to my shirt and loudly demanding attention and treats.

I did. My boy is 14, and he's stopped saying "please" and "thank you" to me, but he's still polite to my mom. To me, he mostly just complains when I tell him it's time to stop laying on the driveway and come inside. I mean, he still gets up and comes inside when I tell him to, but he walks slowly, mouthing off the whole time.

All three of my pets (6yo cat, 1yo cat, 8mo puppy) will speak back if spoken to XD and sometimes they initiate conversations on their own as well! They’re all very articulate and conversant for their ages XD

My cat sleeps in the bedroom, she knows once the curtains are drawn it's sleep time. Even when I have a migraine and just need to lie down for a couple of hours during the day, she just goes to sleep as well

Yes! We've always had at least one cat that stayed with anyone that was sick. One of our cats even sat next to our son when we were giving him nebulizer treatments. You would think the noise would have kept her away. I often wondered if she enjoyed the medicated mist.

Ok, if you want a cat to come up to you, give them a half blink. You know why cats go up to people who don't like them? They give them the evil side eye, or half lidded glance. To a cat, that is a relaxed, non threatening look. Wide open eyes, mean hunting, ready to attack. Try it next time and see, works everytime for me to get strange kitty to come over!!

my cat is an old man cat 16+ years old... not any fun anymore, only time he has anything to do with me is when he wants more food... Then he comes around, talks to me like "You Idiot", and goes to his bowl to wait. Not much of a friend, but he used to be... oh well....He can stay the rest of his days here, but I am getting a new puppy or a new kitten soon...

I have a pic of my cat chasing my then four year old daughter who learned to ride her bike on our no thru road. She'd meow at her to get off the road then stop and do the same to me to get her off the road. Hilarious how protective of my daughter she can be especially since she spent the first couple years grumbling, hissing and leaving the room when we first brought the baby home. (Our cat was the first born and felt very insecure of this intruder).
