Or assuming your coursemate asked for your number because they thought you were cute and gently telling them that you're seeing someone only to understand they just wanted to work on your group project. What about waving to someone who's definitely waving to a person behind you? That's a classic.

Imagine my surprise and annoyance (I am a former English teacher) when right-wing idiots started complaining about 'they/them/their' as gender neutral pronouns. We have literally used these pronouns in the singular form for *centuries*. It's beyond stupid.

Hooray! I'm afraid it's going to take me a long time to accept noun/pronoun disagreements like this to replace 'him or her' or 'his or her'. I understand why it's happening and I understand that one of the strengths of English is its ability to evolve. But every time I see an example, it just grates.
It bugged me at first, especially when I didn't know what was happening. My son had a gender fluid friend, and said them, and I thought he was talking about more than one person, so I'd say "Who?", and he'd say "Spencer", then refer to Spencer as "them". I finally asked my son to explain, which he did. Now, Spencer is my son's best friend, who I love like my own. I didn't completely understand, but wanted to respect this kid who I loved, so I used the pronouns, then set out to educate myself, because I love this person. And it helped me understand other kids like him (and he now uses him).

Pro Tip: Replace "any English teacher" with "anyone," and it becomes obvious that it's singular.
They/Them/Their have always been used to denote both singular and plural. 19th century tended to use them more as a singular pronoun in speech and as a plural when writing (as it was considered more formal). Using both became standard in the 20th century as more people were educated and our culture became less rigid and more relaxed. And remember that English is THE most difficult language to master because we have an exception for every rule, as this shows. And being an idiot isn't limited to the Right-wing or the Left-wing: they're both pretty equal in that department. In fact, most politicians qualify in my opinion.
THIS though is common usage, It WOULD be considered wrong the say "should lose its teaching license."

I was thought that the polite way and proper grammar is to talk in they/their when you generalize something about people who could be of any sex, instead of just using the male form and it made sense to me. It was some 20+ years ago. What is all that crap about it all of a sudden?

I do that these days despite being taught differently. Why? Because gender fluidity isn't a thing when I was a wee lad.
I had a teacher in 2002 (I was about 7 or 8) yell about how they/them was a singular after a book she taught us from got it wrong. She had multiple degrees and was one of the smartest teachers in the entire district but chose to teach younger kids in her final years as a sort of treat after HS English.
No. But, are you one person whose gender is currently unknown? Yes. Therefore, singular they is legit.
