I had exactly the same conversation with my Korean friend. It's pointless to explain the difference to rednecks screaming go back to China in your face.

Previously, we spoke with Dr. Lise Deguire, a clinical psychologist and the author of “Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience From a Burn Survivor” who said that occasional sadness is a normal part of life.“Happiness and sadness are both normal feelings that naturally arise through life's inevitable ups and downs. When people are numb to their feelings, or try to avoid feelings altogether, they won't experience sadness, but they won't experience much happiness either,” she explained.

However, some people may be more susceptible to sad emotions than others. This may be due to many reasons, but previous experiences, genetics, and mindsets are largely to blame. “This can be partly genetic and partly due to negative life experiences. Mindset is also a factor,” Lisa told us.

“People who tend to be pessimistic, who dwell on the future anxiously, and who ruminate negatively about the past can experience more sadness. However, these are cognitive bad habits that can really be helped by psychotherapy.”

But most of the posts in this article have to do with the fact that they make a point which is presented in a funny way but is in itself not that funny. Quite on the contrary, many examples present cases of what could be called “a hard truth” which is, as we know very well, a pretty hard thing to swallow.

In a previous interview, Susan Petang, a certified life coach who runs The Quiet Zone Coaching, told Bored Panda that if the truth is something we don’t agree with, it will be uncomfortable to hear it because it all has to do with our core beliefs and values, and the way we view the world.

“When what we believe to be true about ourselves, situations, other people, or the world in general is at odds with what we observe, the result is cognitive dissonance—when our beliefs and our observations are at odds. This can cause considerable stress,” she explained.

On the other hand, when we talk about truth, we have to be aware of the fact that it’s really a question of perception. Unless it’s a stated, scientifically-backed up fact, or a law of nature, all truths can be challenged. “So, what I have experienced as 'truth' may not be what you have experienced as 'truth.' For example, one could say that the truth is that water boils at 212 degrees. Or does it? If you use the metric system, water boils at 100 degrees,” Susan said.

Free hospital parking in Scotland - turned out it was more expensive to have the machines to pay, maintain them, have staff to monitor the car parks etc than it was just to let folk park - so zero charges for the hospital stay and zero to go visit.

It’s worse for patients who have strokes or hip fractures. When they discharge from the hospital they need help. But every family member they have as either just as elderly is them or they work full-time to make ends meet. So no one is able to take care of grandma or grandpa and they have to go to a nursing home. In order to qualify for financial assistance for a nursing home grandma or grandpa has to be poor. So they have to open the valve on their savings account and spend it all, which disappears in a matter of days at a nursing home. Life savings wiped out in a matter of days. Only then do they get the full-time care they need.

Chronic health problems here. Our deductible is THOUSANDS per year PLUS high monthly premiums. I literally fly to South Africa when I need expensive tests and treatment, because even in PRIVATE care there it is cheaper to play for a roundtrip ticket, lodging, and some of the BEST doctors on the planet. (Well thanks to the maskholes and anti-vaxxers I'm currently just trying to wait it out rather than pay an arm and leg here.) We are so broken it's ridiculous.

Live in the Netherlands, chronically ill as well. My MS medication alone is over €20k, which I only pay €385/year on top of my insurance. To make it even better, due to low income I'm getting €98/month compensation by the government. All other examinations, tests and appointments all are paid for. USA-wise, I'll be bankrupt and the medication will be $100k/knowing they can make huge amounts of money on people depending on their medications...

Let me offer an alternate viewpoint. As a former federal employee who became disabled after a work injury, my primary insurance is Medicare. My secondary insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Program. I had a heart attack in 2019. I've not gotten a single bill to this day...and neither would a Congressperson. They deny the general population the same medical coverage they themselves enjoy, which is entitlement at its finest.

Of course you can, although insurance itself is very expensive. Some people are lucky enough to have decent insurance via their jobs. But even with insurance, hospital bills are sky high. I have no idea how people survive in the US. I have a friend with a six-figure income and it's just barely enough to live reasonably comfortably.

When my brother was 18 he got endocarditis and was incredibly sick. He ended up having open heart surgery to replace a valve, along with several other surgeries to repair veins in his leg. His total medical care cost well over a million dollars (this was back in the 90's). He was on my father's insurance plan at the time and afterwards the insurance company dropped my father's company as a client - because you know, they actually had to pay for someone's health care. We're definitely living the dream here in America aren't we?

Hubby has been battling Stage 4 throat cancer for 8 years now (all clear, still awaiting surgery to close the hole in his neck), in and out of hospitals, chemo, radiation, x-rays, endless tests, etc. We've paid out about a grand ($1,000) and that has ALL been to fix the damage the radiation did to his jaw and teeth. These bills down south are insane.

I wonder how many of these bills get paid - I live in Canada - I hear they can bankrupt a patient to pay a bill! Humanity in medicine would be nice!

For all of you who continually, annoyingly, continue to bitch and moan about the cost of health care in the U.S.A.. Are you willing to forgo the opportunity of a financial windfall because of "malpractice" by any one of or combination of medical providers? Are you willing to allow nothing more than a maximum of about $100K as blood money in the case of the injury or death of you or a loved one? If not, quit bitching and moaning. Everybody that works in any aspect of health care pretty much has to carry malpractice insurance as a protection of them against you. Would you carry the burden of this cost on yourself or would you push this expense of onto the group which would attempt to do you financial harm? More than likely not but you'd have all of the people in health care carry the burden of this cost on themselves though. Granted, malpractice insurance isn't the only factor in the overall cost of U.S. healthcare but it surely contributes.

Australia, where I live, has a socialised healthcare system. We can still sue for malpractice and medical professionals still have to carry exorbitant insurance. A successful suit will result in millions, depending on what the facts are. So I don't really understand your point - you can have socialised healthcare and still be legally protected. Both patients and medical professionals.

America's a democracy. Presumably if the majority want healthcare that's free at the point of use and lobbied for it, it would happen. It just means accepting higher taxes.

That’s the total charges before insurance payments and adjustments. What was the actual ‘amount due’? Even if this person doesn’t have insurance, this was a clickbait box to snap a photo of.

So, instead of saying my dad refused to get insurance despite knowing full well how the system works, he decided that since he doesn't agree with it, he wasn't going to participate then complain about the consequences of his actions. Meanwhile, educated adult get 3 surgeries in one year, and paid a grand total of $1000, because despite my dislike of the system I don't cut my nose off to spite my face. Stop blaming others for the consequences of YOUR actions.

My hospital pays competitive wages which means 200k-million/year for doctors, nurses 80k-200k/year not counting technicians, housekeeping, transporters, lab workers, secretary's, kitchen staff staffing your care 24/7. How would that cost surprise anyone? They will get reimbursed less than 1/2 of that from insurance. Those without insurance can negotiate it down to Zero if no insurance and no money
