I reached out to the author of the thread, redditor u/CataleyaJackson, and she was very happy to share her opinion about the misconceptions that men have about women. 21-year-old Cataleya told me that she's a big fan of Bored Panda and has been reading the online magazine for the past 8 years.
"One of my friends had a hilarious misconception about periods and my friends and I had laughed about it. They thought that periods just never end, that we'd be 99 on our death beds and still bleeding out. It inspired me to want to ask people about other misconceptions they had faced," she told Bored Panda in an interview. The author of the post, u/CataleyaJackson, believes that it's certainly a lack of education that leads to misinformation and misconceptions about women. "In my country, we do have sex education at ages 13, 15 and again at 17 (if they've opted to study biology in 11th and 12th grade otherwise it's just at the former 2 ages)," she shared.
"It's very scientific and doesn't leave space for questions about things that actually matter, things that happen in real-life. Most people don't even learn, they just memorize it to be able to reproduce it during the exams, and then they forget all of it. We need better education, and it has to be more informative and relatable than scientific," she told Bored Panda that there has to be more meaning to education than just passing tests and exams.

We don't pee from our vaginas. We pee from the urethra. Which - again - is a different hole. We can control whether we pee. We cannot control whether we bleed. Sneezing, coughing, etc, can shoot forth an amount of blood. Our uturine lining is shedding, and it happens whether we like it or not (hint: we don't).
Just because your brother's girlfriend had mild cramps and said that women were overreacting doesn't mean that is true. For some fortunate souls, their cramps are light and barely noticeable. For others, it is truly debilitating. You cannot imagine. There is no good comparison. That said, there are cramp simulation units. Keep in mind when you're using those that it's only one aspect of the full picture.
If you find any of this too gross to contemplate, you are not mature enough for sex.

My husband and I signed up for birthing classes through our hospital when I was expecting our eldest son. I like my period. Weird, I know, I know, but my body seems to be quirky in this one way. I don't get pms, so that part's fine. I do feel a bit ill all over during the menstruation itself if I have to sit or stand in one place, but the solution to this is just to lie down and relax for the first day. I had endometriosis. The uterine tissue migrates outside the uterus. This causes intense pain. This is how I've described it: You're standing between 2 trucks; one if front & one in back. They drive up and squeeze you between them, not hard enough to run you over, but enough to cause intense pain; then they backup and repeat the process over and over again. Now this can also explain any level of cramps. It's just the amount of pressure that the trucks place on you that's different. And this pain is different, but no less significant with every women. So, your pain might be worse or less than mine, but that doesn't mean it's ever comfortable.
I learned about the reproductive system (both male & female) in a 9th grade general science class in South Africa. We also learned about the digestive, skeletal, neural, etc systems. It's science, people! I've been in the U.S. since '99 and am constantly amazed at how little the average American knows about the functions of the human body. The cultural norm of associating science with shame, fear, and superstition is reflected in the way the pandemic is handled in the U.S.
For me, period cramps are about equivalent in intensity to a really nasty toothache, even if they are completely different "flavours" of pain.
Regarding the number of holes, to my complete surprise I once met a girl that actually assumed boys, just like girls, had a separate urethra and semen hole. When I was young, I was lucky. My periods were light and my cramps mild. BUT the other shoe fell when I was older. My periods got incredibly heavy and my cramps unbearable—-like bedridden at least one day a month unbearable—-for the last 5 years before menopause. Menopause wasn’t any kind of joyride either. It epigenetically triggered hypothyroidism and gluten sensitivity. Tons of fun (/s). Oh yeah, the universe sure evened out the score. It evened it out but good.

According to Cataleya, there's a stigma surrounding sex education that needs to be erased. She shared an example of how ridiculous things can get. This particular scene happened while the redditor was in the 6th grade.
"They called away all the girls from classes, brought us to an auditorium to discuss periods and what they are, why they happen, what we should do, etc. They gave us packets of pads and told us to keep them in our lockers for emergencies. Their heart was in the right place, but by only asking the girls to attend this, they ensured that periods became some sort of mythical and curious event in the minds of all the boys," she pointed out where the problem lies.
"[The boys] were not educated, they remained ignorant to what should be essential information to them. And of course, we all scrambled to hide our pads because we all thought we would rather be caught dead than holding a packet of them. They teased us about it and we, being only 11, had nothing to say to defend ourselves because the stigma around periods is very strong in my country."

I was unconscious when I was raped, which obviously proves it wasn't legitimate as my body didn't shut down, it got pregnant instead. Silly me.

My male friend told me that I don't necessarily know what blood looks like. And that when period blood gets soaked up by a pad or tampon it's no longer visible and soaks into the product losing the blood colour. So pads are always white and dry.
The stigmas surrounding periods go even deeper. "I have friends whose own parents make them sit on mats on the floor when they are on their periods because they are considered impure and should not touch anything in the house," Cataleya said.
"Some women aren't allowed to enter the kitchen or the prayer room, they're not allowed to leave the house. A majority of women in my country have no access to pads or tampons and use cloth which causes infection and prevents them from being able to earn a living. I could go on and on about how bad it is here for a lot of women," she revealed to Bored Panda.
Cataleya believes that it's always best to own up to a misconception about women and have it corrected than continue staying ignorant. "There's no shame in it if you're 30 and have misconceptions about periods. It is sad that you may not have educated yourself about it, but there's absolutely no shame in asking women to educate them or to start reading online themselves. Sex Ed is so important," she said.
That an intact hymen means you're a virgin and a torn/broken one means you're not. You can have sex and your hymen remain unbroken and you can tear your hymen running, jumping, doing splits, stretching, etc.

Normal periods can be painful, but that doesn't mean that if you experience debilitating pain, you should dismiss it as normal. Commenting this because even some gynecologists tell their patients to just deal with it, but it can be treatable and there might be an underlying cause you don't know about.

The one not mentioned in this list is that the clitoris is shaped like a wish bone and when measured in full (the "head" and "legs") can be a total of 10 or so cm. Sex education (especially in the US) is pretty terrible. I'm a cis woman and didn't learn that until university physiology.
Also, I despise pictures that show the urethra as a hole behind the clit. It is actually surrounded by it and a part of it. Female circumcision actually cuts off part of the urethra with it, and can cause incontinence because of the lost sphincter, or constriction that reduces the amount of urine coming out making a normal pee take several minutes.

Off topic, but just shows how ignorant society is. I hated one commercial for vitamins where there are "vitamins for her" which make her "hair, nails and skin beautiful" and "vitamins for him" which "build muscles, improve stamina and boost your immunity". Like, wtf, women also need vitamins to make us stronger, more fit and boost immunity! We are not just popping vitamins to be prettier. It was so horribly annoying to me, even visuals were stupid, woman with full make up showing her long nails and shaking her blow dried hair and man just running in his sport's gear. I hated it. Society has no clue about women.

Parents need to be more open and educating of children when it comes to our bodies. THEN when it's time to learn more about the mechanics in school, they are better prepared. Having a period is absolutely NORMAL and should be treated as such. THEN there wouldn't be such embarrassment surrounding it.
Schools are horrible for this type of stuff. As a woman, I learn more from this sort of stuff than health class. And when I came out as bi, my mom didn't want me to watch tiktoks and stuff pertaining to my sexuality because of explicit stuff (I was in 10th grade at the time) and I just thought, How else am I going to learn how to have sex--especially safe sex--with another woman? My health teacher in 7th grade made it through the whole sex ed unit without actually saying how straight people have sex.
I got some of my sex ed from a foul-mouthed neighbour my age. He told me dirty jokes, then had to explain them to me. In retrospect, I appreciate that because he was the only teenager around who could give me facts in a totally matter-of-fact way.

It’s also not the “school system” to blame for bad biology/sex’s education. Sex education is a parents job, and should be ongoing information given to your kids as soon as they are old enough to understand or ask questions, and BEFORE they actually start going through puberty and/or having sex.
It shouldn't be a parents job, because plenty of parents are so brainwashed by religion, they will deliberately withhold information. The school system ought to be a neutral and informative place for explaining biological functions to little humans to make sure those with brainwashed/idiot parents are informed as well.

The period ones completely baffle me. The only thing my husband ever questioned about my period is the different types of pads I use. He knows that periods are different from person to person, he just didn't realize that periods differ from month to month or that bleeding typically slows down from day 1 to the end.

Reading through these really made me appreciate the impact of having grown up with a mom and older sister. They were generally modest about bodily functions but when I asked I was given accurate answers. I've always kept menstrual products around even though I'm a single male.
My ex asked me once when he was going “down town” how long it had been since I had clipped down there. I thought he meant shaved and asked for clarification. Serious question from a middle-european: Don't you have some mandatory school education about the reproductive organs? I remember having this kind of class at least twice at school. Additional there were a lot of different teen magazines (90es) where there always had some mostly reliable articles about sex and love. So it was nearly impossible not to know how the organs look like and theoretically work. I am really baffled that this seems not to be the case in the USA?

Normal periods can be painful, but that doesn't mean that if you experience debilitating pain, you should dismiss it as normal. Commenting this because even some gynecologists tell their patients to just deal with it, but it can be treatable and there might be an underlying cause you don't know about.

Sex education (especially in the US) is pretty terrible. I'm a cis woman and didn't learn that until university physiology.
Also, I despise pictures that show the urethra as a hole behind the clit. It is actually surrounded by it and a part of it. Female circumcision actually cuts off part of the urethra with it, and can cause incontinence because of the lost sphincter, or constriction that reduces the amount of urine coming out making a normal pee take several minutes.

I hated one commercial for vitamins where there are "vitamins for her" which make her "hair, nails and skin beautiful" and "vitamins for him" which "build muscles, improve stamina and boost your immunity". Like, wtf, women also need vitamins to make us stronger, more fit and boost immunity! We are not just popping vitamins to be prettier. It was so horribly annoying to me, even visuals were stupid, woman with full make up showing her long nails and shaking her blow dried hair and man just running in his sport's gear. I hated it. Society has no clue about women.
The vitamins are probably exactly the same, they're just using stereotypes to market them as two separate products. The only possible difference might be that the "Women's" contain more iron.

Having a period is absolutely NORMAL and should be treated as such. THEN there wouldn't be such embarrassment surrounding it.
Schools are horrible for this type of stuff. As a woman, I learn more from this sort of stuff than health class. And when I came out as bi, my mom didn't want me to watch tiktoks and stuff pertaining to my sexuality because of explicit stuff (I was in 10th grade at the time) and I just thought, How else am I going to learn how to have sex--especially safe sex--with another woman? My health teacher in 7th grade made it through the whole sex ed unit without actually saying how straight people have sex.
I got some of my sex ed from a foul-mouthed neighbour my age. He told me dirty jokes, then had to explain them to me. In retrospect, I appreciate that because he was the only teenager around who could give me facts in a totally matter-of-fact way.

It’s also not the “school system” to blame for bad biology/sex’s education. Sex education is a parents job, and should be ongoing information given to your kids as soon as they are old enough to understand or ask questions, and BEFORE they actually start going through puberty and/or having sex.
It shouldn't be a parents job, because plenty of parents are so brainwashed by religion, they will deliberately withhold information. The school system ought to be a neutral and informative place for explaining biological functions to little humans to make sure those with brainwashed/idiot parents are informed as well.

He knows that periods are different from person to person, he just didn't realize that periods differ from month to month or that bleeding typically slows down from day 1 to the end.
I had to explain a menstrual cup to my dad, it took a couple minutes, but then he was on board with me getting them as a long term alternative to pads.

My ex asked me once when he was going “down town” how long it had been since I had clipped down there. I thought he meant shaved and asked for clarification. No, he meant how long since I had my labia “trimmed”…he honestly thought they grew constantly and we have them cut back every so often so they don’t get unmanageable… I to this day am still amazed.

I remember having this kind of class at least twice at school. Additional there were a lot of different teen magazines (90es) where there always had some mostly reliable articles about sex and love. So it was nearly impossible not to know how the organs look like and theoretically work. I am really baffled that this seems not to be the case in the USA?
