The Big Apple is awash with marvelous items thrown on the dusty sidewalks, waiting to be picked up by a lucky passerby and start their journey all over again. Think of mid-century-style bookshelves, velvet couches, modern tables, intricate mirrors, oil paintings, art prints, you name it–it’s there.
Apparently, stooping is a longtime tradition in NYC, but its newly found popularity took off in 2019 together with the emergence of the 'Stooping NYC' Instagram page.
Created by a Brooklyn couple and stooping aficionados, the page became a holy grail for the “one person’s trash, another person’s” treasures and today, it boasts a community of 429K followers.
Below we wrapped up some of the newest NYC stooping gems to make us all both jealous and happy for the people who got their hands on these goods! Be careful... When otherwise pristine furniture is unloaded like this, it's likely because it has mice nests or bedbugs.

Again, this isn't trash. It's someone giving something away for free. They know it's not garbage, that's why there's a sign on it. It's hard as hell to coordinate the moving of anything in NYC since both space and transportation are limited. And if you put it on marketplace or other online classified, you get choosing beggars who want you to deliver it and they harass you about it, even if you advertise it's for free. (I'm a single mom, it's my kid's birthday, you don't know my struggles, just deliver it!) Just putting it on the sidewalk with a sign removes all that hassle and is much more convenient.

Moving a long distance could be one. I had to give all my plants away when moving across country. Made me very bummed. But was able to bring some cuttings in a mason jar and they are getting off to a good start in our new home.

We moved from San Diego to Oregon last year. I gave all but one of my houseplants away (everything was going into storage for a bit) I have 1 devil's ivy that I got when my son was born in 1980 & it did just fine on the journey.
A while back, Bored Panda spoke with the creators of the StoopingNYC project to find out what they have been up to as well as how the stooping community is doing lately. “The growth of the community is incredible and we mean that in every aspect,” the founders told us.
“So many more submissions. So many more amazing items. So many more #stoopingsuccesses. And so many more great stoopers!” Today, StoopingNYC on Instagram is home to a dedicated community of 429K followers, but their audience seems to be still growing.

Portland, Oregon put stuff out on the streets like that. If it wasn't taken in a few days THEN it goes to Goodwill. Why go to Target when you can just walk the neighborhood. Scored a few good mirrors, wooden chairs and books. When we moved we left an awesome grill only a few months old and a vacuum cleaner that my neighbor asked are you really getting rid of this? Can I have it? Of course.

Part of the success of StoopingNYC seems to have to do with the fact that so many people find stooping a very fun and cool activity. The founders explained that the concept of a treasure hunt is universal, but stooping in NYC is unique to NYC.

People usually leave things by the curb because they have redecorated/ got new furniture. Rather than paying to have their former possessions moved, they leave them outside because they know that people will most likely help themselves and it saves them money.

My grandma had an organ similar to this one. I always loved playing it when I was little. When she and my grandpa passed and my dad/ uncles were cleaning out their house, they gave it away. I was a teen when that happened and I was very angry about it. It’s like they were giving a piece of grandma away.

I would have felt the same way if my mother name anything of my grandmother’s away without considering whether my sibling, or I wanted anything. She actually asked me if I wanted one of my grandmothers rosaries and her Bible after my grandmother passed and my mom and her siblings were cleaning out her apartment. I hadn’t even thought about it until then, because I was still grieving her loss and was honored that Mom would think of me in that respect. My grandmother and I were very close and I miss her dearly, but I have no doubt that I will see her again one day.

Yes, people like them, but not enough that they are likely to have much value/many buyers. If you have a sizable home library they look beautiful and you can put any of them out as coffee table books. Still, if you do get rid of them Bryn has the right idea, though wrong order. Definitely see if any local schools could use them or even put them up on Craigslist as free to anyone who wants them before recycling. The type of paper used and the amount of ink involved make it suboptimal for recycling, but they could be highly valued in a new home.

I'd always be wary about picking up animal houses unless they are unused. Some illnesses can be transmitted through animal houses; like the one that one of my dad's ferrets got sick with, it necessitated getting a new house and burning the old one so none of the other two got sick because cleaning it was not enough.

I must have this giraffe to prank my husband. His grandmother had this rather large and heavy statue of a giraffe in her entryway for no real reason and he hated it. I I loved it! Now I look for opportunities to torment him with giraffes 😁

Once my dad and uncle, both batshit crazy btw, decide to have a co-rummage sale. The day of the sale my uncle pulls up in a uhaul and just starts unloading tons of different types of office chairs. Meaning HE DIDN'T GET THEM ALL FROM ONE PLACE! After the 7th one I finally couldn't take it anymore and broke the silence saying loudly "What the f**k is going on?!?" He just kinda looks at me oddly and says their for the rummage. Then proceeded to role out six more chairs. I was terrified and amazed all at once.

Found a leather sofa while out with the dogs…. It was probably 100 degrees out at least. I foolishly waited until the morning and it was gone of course. As soon as you see it call a taxi cab van or look on Kijiji/Craigslist for a mover and plant your a*s down while you wait..

Sigh, the frame! ❤️ When I am out and about I always look for frames… Including garage sales. Got a bunch that were tributes to Queen Victoria at the turn of the century, (1890’s). Washed them, encapsulated them( because of lead paint content) and then restored them. We have several.

To be fair, there are a lot of nice looking pieces... but I'm not gonna lie, I would pass up just about any used piece of furniture because of the potential for "hitchhikers." Yep, that sofa may be free, but so are whatever roaches, scabies, bedbugs, carpet beetles, fleas, lice, or whatever else might try to come with it. Nope. Just because it looks clean, it doesn't mean there's not an army of disgusting critters hiding in it and waiting to ruin your life. As a nurse at a hospital, I've see all kinds of infestations that people bring with them... they don't always come from where you might expect and they dont always hide in plain sight. No thanks.

i had to curb an 8 ft purple velvet sofa because it didn't fit in the elevator or the stairwell. that was nearly 20 years ago and i still miss that sofa.

We don’t do that here either. Occasionally you get some grotty chest of frames with a sign that says “free”. But imagine being so rich you can give away furniture like that!

I'm going crazy trying to find a perfect couch that isn't too big for the small space I need it for, that is comfy and not terribly expensive and people just throw out gorgeous pieces of furniture that I'd never be able to afford!
