People Are Joining This Thread Ranting About Overhyped Foods They Don’t Understand And Here Are 34 Of Them
It is probably impossible to find a food that everyone loves, there will always be someone who hates it with all their heart. Even the most common things that a lot of recipes may contain. It is interesting how different people can eat the same thing, but have a different reaction to the taste or even perceive it differently.
Even though the Latin maxim says that there is no point in disputing tastes, people love to give their opinions on food. Reddit user jamboamericano wanted to know people’s opinions on foods that are hyped up but “quite simply suck.” They received 3k responses so take a look at the most popular ones that quite a lot of people agreed on.

I don't get the appeal of chili that is made to be as hot and spicy as humanly possible, to the point that it hurts to eat it. "I make my chili with the five hottest peppers known to man and a dash of snake venom to kick it up a notch" Why?
That, and tofu.
Overly spicy food is a no no. You cannot taste anything, and your bottomhole pays a dear price afterwards, all to appear macho!
Some very spicy sauces are quite tasty. Hot One's Last Dab is insanely hot but also has a nice flavour to it. I agree flavourless hot for the sake of hot is dumb but if it's hot but also has good flavour, then go for it.
Load More Replies...Tofu is sublime. Just picked up the definitive book on the stuff, ASIAN TOFU by Andrea Nguyen. It's not only nutritious and sustainable, it is the most versatile food on Earth! The possibilities are endless!
Please make sure you buy your tofu with sustainably grown soy beans! So much rainforest has been felled to make place for soy bean growing. I'm aware a lot of it is used for livestock feeding, and people eating Tory is not to blame for anything, but I'm a firm believer that every little thing helps. (I hate tofu, but they is besides the point)
Load More Replies...To be fair tastebuds are very different. I used to work for Indian people, they used tons of very hot peppers and were so used to them they hardly felt them. In India as they explained it started as a safety thing, historically they didn't always had clean food/water, and tons of chilli protects you from nasty consequences. That's why lots of Europeans get sick in certain parts of the world, because the locals eat everything with a lot of spice but they omit those so the infected water gets them every time. This Indian family had a girl who was 3. One day they brought home a bag of crisps that were so hot I could not eat one piece and had to wash my hands 10 times. She gobbled it up like it was a bunch of sugar cubes.
In similar vein Romanian cooking traditionally has an incredible amount of fat in everything. Those not used to it get an upset stomach because they don't do as the locals who drink a lot of strong spirits and eat fermented veggies like sauerkraut and those help with the immense amount of fat.
Load More Replies...Eating chili releases endorphins to give you a natural high, provided the dose is high enough. Depends on your tolerance how hot the chili needs to be to get this effect.
I believe it...I swear I get jazzed up after eating hot stuff.
Load More Replies...This sounds like what is done here in Trinidad a lot. "We cooked it with ghost pepper or "scorpion pepper" like...I'm good, I like to taste my food and keep my rear nice and cool.
It’s a competition, tbh. Whoever can make themself the most miserable wins. I guess.
It's similar to binge drinking, but with chili, at least you're only hurting yourself.
Load More Replies...I once saw the text on a t-shirt, "tofu is as good as the chef". It is true. Tofu requires a skilled cook, but everyone can learn if they want to. I am one of those who love tofu and I know how to cook it in different ways.
I like spicy food, but the spice needs to be balanced. If all I can taste is the heat, I'm not interested.
Scratch the surface of most pepperheads and you'll find an endorphin junkie. People tell me I'm weird that I can tell flavors of spicy things aside from "hot". Scotch Bonnets are rather sweet/fruity, buht joloki (ghost peppers) have an interesting citrus flavor, jalapeños have an astringent/sour flavor (which is why I prefer mine pickled).
The heat from capsaicin releases endorphins, making it a pleasure to wat spicy food
Tofu is NOT food. I suspect that it is either a building or crafting material.
So hot you can't taste it. I think men think it's 'manly' to eat the hottest possible foods..
I'm a woman and we do hot sauce challenges in my family all the time. My husband is usually the one that can't handle it.
Load More Replies...There actually are people who love really REALLY HOT chillies in their food. I'm not one of them.
You just have to balance the heat. I put habanero, jalapeno, serrano, and some ghost pepper in mine but I also add some brown sugar and a splash of acid to tone it down a little. Although for me the hotter the better.
What is too hot? It depends on the habit. It happens to me that I order "very very hot" food and when I taste it, I don´t feel any hotness. I used to ask my friends if it is just me or if they messed my order. If they tasted it, they looked as it hurts them (red face, wet eyes) and pretended I tried to assassinate them. (They don´t try anymore.) (I am white caucasian).
Wow. You just throw tofu under the bus there at the last minute for no reason.
Try eating fried tofu, is AWESOME!!! And I don't understand uber spicy chili either. To me chili is comfort food, meant to be savoured and enjoyed. I find no comfort eating something that makes my eyes water. Just a slight kick for me.
Yeah, I don't get the Dave's Insanity Sauce. You cannot taste anything and it blows your head off. The only thing it would be good for is a couple drops in a big pot of chilis or stews and soups. It's not like you can sprinkle it on eggs. My husband bought a bottle and it was so old the label started peeling off. We joked that it was because the sauce was so hot you could feel it thru the bottle.
Ah, the scoville competitions. I don't think it's even meant to be food, or enjoyable. Never understood it really, I want my food to taste good - and I do like chili and the different tastes of different varieties.
I can’t eat chilli. Had lots of trouble with that when travelling in Thailand and Malaysia.
Reaction to spice - particularly capsaicin, can be trained. For some people, hot is mild, mild is tasteless, etc. When I lived in Mexico, there were a lot more serrano peppers than jalapeno - and most of the jalapenos were red - some were smoked (chipotle) but they were on the low-end. Serranos are about twice as hot, and that's what we used in cooking. And a lot of smoked poblanos and achiotes, etc. Nothing like Habanero or Scotch Bonnet.
Because SUPER SPICY food is AAAAAAAWESOME! Understand it is not for everyone.
It's plentiful in most any Asian cuisine, plus a staple in vegetarian and vegan diets. That's easily over a billion people. You've clearly never given it an honest try.
Load More Replies...Tofu by itself is okay but if you cook it correctly it's amazing
Tofu is delicious as long as you use the right type and you know how to cook it. Not all tofu taste the same and have the same texture. It kills me on the inside when people w***y nilly toss raw tofu into a salad and expect it to taste good. And I don't mean to sound like a snob, but when I was in Indonesia, I got to taste tofu that was not mass produced in a factory. My mom buys tofu from a local tofu maker and it tasted richer somehow.
Total agreement until I read about tofu. Am I the only addict? I can eat my tofu plain, ahhh.. I must stand up and eat it right now.
There are hot peppers that have flavour. The art is blending together things so you get heat and flavor without overwhelming everything else.
Yeah, I like spicy food, but only when you can actually taste the food. If the only thing you feel is a burning sensation, that just stops being enjoyable.
When I make chili it contains a lot of fresh habanero and jalapeños. We like the heat. I also use honey, cumin, paprika...so there's also a lot of flavor. I've eaten wings you have to sign a waiver for. Usually it's all heat and no flavor. So I know which restaurants have heat and flavor. Some of us just love that spice/heat! Just have to do it right.
It's all relative though. If you were raised on spicy cuisine, it doesn't affect you the same way. I come from a country where the cuisine is quite bland, you'd need to build tolerance to appreciate spicy stuff. I went through a chili-head phase a few years ago and would happily scoff phaal curry and California Reaper-based sauces but now I'm back to struggling with a vindaloo... Maybe it's time to revisit the street markets, get some Trinidad Scorpion chilis and build myself up back again.
Some people like it that hot, others are going for the endorphin rush. Everyone's taste is different. Vive la difference.
I only discovered the deliciousness of tofu when I went to Japan. It's just like with plain boiled rice: you have to try the right one to truly understand.
Instagram food (so foods with so much added nonsense just for the sake of a photo, not for taste)
Caviar
I feel like whoever buys that s**t doesn't actually like it and uses it to flaunt their money
This is just silly. There are types of caviar that aren't expensive, particularly because you're not meant to shovel it in with a fork. I absolutely love caviar, and it has nothing to do with showing off or being rich (I'm not).
Oysters, I've never tried them and I never want to, they just look like big boogers to me, sorry for the mental image.
Macarons. Expensive air cookies that still manage to stick to your teeth.
Kombucha. I know it is a drink, but still
Liver. Just......no.
As someone from the UK I don't get why so many people here love mushy peas. I find peas relatively tasteless and gross as they are, mushing them just makes the texture gross as well
Kale. I don’t care how it’s prepared, there’s just no point to it.
If it's prepared and cooked properly, Kale is delicious. Especially Scottish black kale. My family loves it and it's full of nutrients like iron and vitamins.
Lobster. I uh, I don't get it. It always tastes a bit flavorless and just alright to me. Then I see people dip it in butter and yea thats fine and all and it tastes great, but then I get the feeling I'm just tasting the butter and what the f**k is the point of this $30 dish exactly?
Like a lot of shellfish, it has to be fresh from the ocean. If you have it in a tank at the supermarket where they just sit there it's not worth it. Back on PEI, Canada; 70% of houses are having fresh lobster on Mother's Day right off the boat. Can't beat it.
This will not be popular…Taco Bell.
Only edible if it’s absolutely drenched in hot sauce. It’s mushy, bland, makes me bloated, and strangely, sometimes gives me a headache. 2 out of 5 times found a hair in the burrito. I gave up.
Or if you’re drunk, the bar closed, and there’s no other place open.
Five Guys. Not sure if it’s the same as in the US (I’m in the UK) or I just got a dodgy meal but it was just greasy overpriced mess.
Pop tarts
Hot Cheetos. I absolutely love spicy foods but they taste like bleeda**. whatever that means
Hot Flamin' Cheetos is my guilty pleasure. My butt does not thank me the next day, though
Truffle oil
The majority of truffle oil isn't actually made with truffles. The main ingredient is a chemical designed in a laboratory to mimic the aroma of truffles (synthetic 2,4-dithiapentane).
Beets. My wife tried to convince me to like them by saying "they taste like dirt!" Needless to say, this was an ineffective approach.
Ranch dressing. It’s vile. People put it on EVERYTHING. gross. Just stop it.
When it was first introduced, it was a packet mix that you combined with mayonnaise and real buttermilk. It was delicious then. You can still buy the mix and that's the only way to prepare it IMHO.
Olives
Kimchi, it just doesn't taste as interesting as people say it does
Shrimp, and any other sea-roaches
Shrimp is pretty cool if it's cooked well. Not overcooked and not drenched in seasoning. With most of these you just got to cook it lightly with minimal additions to keep the true taste.
Seafood. It stinks, it looks gross, and every time I've been convinced to try it it's been rank. My husband and I have agreed many times that we'd have to be starving to death before we ever considered seafood as a meal. I do not understand how anybody can enjoy it. It creates a visceral negative reaction in me.
I love seafood, but I'm careful where I source it. No dodgy diner seafood, please.
Food: Sweet potato
Drink: Kombucha
I can't understand the enjoyment of either, as both taste like dirt
I don't think it sucks but I don't get why popcorn is so cherished.
I don't like the flavor, the texture, or the f*****g kernels that get stuck in my teeth. The smell is always terrible to me and it lingers.
But what I really hate is having to explain to people offering it to me that I actually don't like popcorn, no, I really don't, yes, even that type, yes it's a popular snack, no, I really don't like it.
Reading these posts makes me think these are a lot of pizza, burgers, and fries fans. It is interesting to branch out and try other foods. I don't know why some of these foods are considered to be "hyped". Who hypes tofu????
I think some are conflating over hyped with simply being well known. To me, over hyped is akin to saying it's the best and nothing will compare to it.
Load More Replies...Seems like people love hating on some of the healthiest foods you can eat. They might not all taste great, but your body will certainly thank you in the long run.

I would say the most overhyped things I've tasted were some of the major food chain meals, didn't live up to the hype. There were some others but those are local to the region and might not be so common elsewhere....but none lived up to the hype.
Are people f*****g serious? They are downvoting the people who say they hate pickles or mushrooms just because they do? People seem to forget that too many downvotes gets a person BANNED and shouldn’t be used to express dislike for someone’s opinion. Unless the person is going out of their damn way to be frigging rude, trolling, or spamming don’t downvote someone! SMH
PLEASE DO NOT DOWN VOTE an opinion you disagree with, it can and will get the poster banned. BP FIX YOUR SYSTEM
I will downvote a post or opinion I don't like or disagree with, if there is something bugging me. But I barely downvote stuff, mostly upvote or ignore. I did downvote this comment I am replying to for example.

Why isn't foie gras on the list? Apart from the vile treatment of geese it also tastes really bad. I tried it once many years ago and had to discreetly spit it out in my napkin.
This just in: Food preferences are highly individual and everyone has different likes and dislikes. Shocking.
I think people just like to share their opinions, and then other people like to jump in to express how strongly they agree or disagree haha

Now (25+ years later) my brain has those cross-linked so badly even the smell of hot dogs cooking makes me nauseous. Most types of sausage are also guilty by association for me.
For me, the same happened with mashed potatoes. I slowly get to be able to eat (or even enjoy) it, but only if it's made in a bery specific way and from scratch. I think I'll never be able to eat the powdered one from the box (that I used to eat as I child before the flu) again.

For me it’s mustard, I literally cannot stand the taste. And I don’t get how people can enjoy banana and avocado, so slimy and mushy, ugh. but, to each their own 🤷♀️
I get why people are hating on the overly processed foods, like Nutella, poptarts, etc... but sometimes the sh!tty food is what hits the spot
Oh. And nut milk. How did this one get left off? I'm not saying that it's all bad. I rather enjoy some of it.... BUT. But, but, but.... IT'S NOT MILK. It's nut juice. You're drinking nut juice. Who's with me?
What's the problem with drinking nut juice? Hardly a new development.

Most of these are foods enjoyed by certain groups or are an acquired taste.

Broccoli. The taste is awful, but the texture! Makes me want to vomit!
I agree with all those items except sweet potato. However I hate the orange one, that overseas seems to be the only one. The red variety (kumara) only.
