People can be afraid of many things, from darkness to spiders, to you name it. Some of these fears are totally irrational, others come from our childhoods and creep in well into our adult lives. One of such bizarre fears is megalophobia.

Think of large objects like huge cruise ships, animals, skyscrapers, underwater structures, and even statues. Now imagine how’d they look if they were bigger. If the thought of it makes your hair stand on your arm, you may also have some traits of megalophobia.

And this subreddit named r/Megalophobia puts a test on your fear of large objects because it offers one hell of a collection. “A place to post images of all things large, particularly ones that are "triggers" for those with megalophobia,” says their description and 430k devoted members are nodding their heads. That's a mighty Clydesdale, the greatest breed of horses. They live only about 15 years though, shorter than most other breeds.

It’s usually done in poorer countries such as India and parts of Africa, the job has literally no safety requirements or protection from falls or dismemberment. Bosses buy the ships on contract hiring as many labourers as possible to break down the ship as fast as possible to make profit off the scrap. Most common deaths are falls, getting crushed and asphyxiation from using cutting torches in closed spaces. Most workers get paid Pennies per hour. If the worker survive long enough as a ship breaker they often end up with terrible illnesses from toxic exposure to chemicals or materials.

I'm sorry, but I think this thread is ridiculous. We do plenty of environmental devastation for no good reason, let's get mad at that! But getting mad at someone for building a house, from sustainable materials, is to me mind-boggling (and hypocritical, unless one doesn't live in a house themselves).

It was built for the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition of 1905. It used hundred of old growth trees from the area, including 54 hand-selected, 6-foot diameter, unpeeled Douglas Fir tree trunks supporting a two-story central colonnade. It featured exhibits about the logging industry, local flora and fauna and Native American artifacts. After the Expo, it was purchased by the city and left in a state of disrepair for about 50 years. It was finally refurbished in the late 50s/early 60s, but the outdated electrical wiring started a fire and burned it to the ground in 1964.

That it was built in the first place doesn't bother me as even trees that live to a great age die eventually. What does bother me is that it wasn't put to good use afterwards and when it was finally refurbished they didn't do anything about updating the original wiring. Just goes to show how often stupid people get into power.

Ummm.. poor trees? I mean, this looks to be a century old and probably kept many ppl alive during the Oregon winters and all the wildlife. Although, I do understand your thought abt losing the trees.. but it obviously kept a family alive out there. I just hope that thing is still standing! Wld make a nice bed and breakfast place.

It was built for an expo in 1905 to show off the Pacific Northwest’s logging industry’s prowess (and excesses). It never housed anyone, and stood empty and in disrepair for most of its existence.

It was built in 1905 for the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition and Oriental Fair. After the fair it was donated to the city and then burned in 1964 by a fire of unknown origin. You can find more about the current World Forestry Center and the history of the old building. https://www.worldforestry.org/about-us/history/

I think, we need to focus on doing better at the present time and learning from past misdemeanours instead of arguing about something that vanished in 1964. I think the amount of non-recyclable waste (including various building materials) we are leaving behind today has a much more devastating consequences than the topic being discussed here. On the other hand such a waste of those ancient trees for a very temporary purpose is very sad, Even though the circumstances back then is a bit unclear.
