Mega-chonky, thicc, and floofy pets might look cuddly and cute but their extra weight isn’t good for their health. Some pet owners have put their chubby cats through ameowzing transformeowtions and turned them into very happy felines.
Bored Panda has collected some of the very best pics of cats before and after their weight loss journeys to inspire you and your own pets to do the same. Scroll down, upvote your fave happy cattos, and share photos of your own pets in the comments below, dear Pandas. When you’re done petting these adorable felines through your screens, check out our earlier posts about other cats who lost a bunch of weight: Wilford, Bazooka, and Bronson.
Bored Panda spoke about cat obesity, health, and diet with Dr. Ernie Ward—founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. “Obesity is our cats' number one health threat. Feline obesity is more than ‘chonky,’ it's a biological time bomb. Obesity in cats is a serious disease with many severe consequences such as diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and many forms of cancer. The worst part of feline obesity is that it reduces their life expectancy and dramatically reduces their quality of life. Cats with obesity desperately need our help.” Scroll down for the rest of our in-depth interview with Dr. Ward, as well as for our interview with the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), the UK’s leading vet charity.

The Only Transformation Pic I Will Allow
Very handsome, but I do wonder if cats have any problems from extra skin after losing a lot of weight. I imagine the furry coating lessens the possibility of skin rubbing. Serene in the second pic.
Bronson's Journey To A Healthier Life. Adopted At 33 Lbs (15 Kg), Now He Weighs 19.9 Lbs (9 Kg)
It's called a polydactyl cat or Hemingway cat because Hemingway had a lot of them. There are a lot of them in England and Wales, and since English sailors traveled a lot with cats there are some in the US east coast and a lot in a french island, l'ile d'Yeu. Since it's a small island the genetic is poor and the anomaly is very common. While some cats develop extraordinary skills, other have issues with ingrowing claws.
Load More Replies...Bronson is the best (and his owners). I don't generally follow "animals" on Instagram but because his owners always write about him in the third person (no offence, I just personally hate it when people write instead of animals in the first person, it's usually much less funny than they think it is) and they always include metric measurements even though they American. And of course - they've done so much for Bronson and are so careful with him losing the weight healthily.
As much as I absolutely agree, it's a bit more nuanced. Bronson was owned by someone who loved him dearly, but was severely ill and couldn't look after him herself, and as a result overfed him. She died and he was put into a facility where his new people found him and they're very committed to helping him reach healthy weight. :) if you are interested you can follow him at @iambronsoncat on instagram.
Load More Replies...Wow...glad He was adopted, the extra weight probably aged him thank you
I wonder how many of these people address the condition of hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) This can occur when you put a cat on a weight loss program that is too "quick". I had a cat that had gotten a little porky, and fed her too little, and a diet food. It caused her to completely stop eating, and her body was trying to call on the fat already there. The only real cure (what the vets told me) was to get them eating again. It took nearly 3months, and thousands of dollars, because I had to leave her hospitalized where they could feed her with a tube until she started on her own. So, long story short, don't put them on crash diets.
That is something to keep in mind, indeed. One would hope that all the people doing this are getting vet consults regularly. I do know at least in Bronson's case his rescuers are in constant contact with his vet, adjusting calorie intake and monitoring his health as he loses the weight.
Load More Replies...Thank you and all admiration to the owner who took the task of restraining the food to this cat. Its a wonderful act of true love
Before - Fat, Dirty, Breathing Problems, And Unable To Clean Herself. Now - Blessed And Highly Favored
The before image is a seriously unwell cat. The after is a show animal.
To whom ever took this cat and helped make her healthy again I commend you.
Great responsible act from the owner who had the cat weight reduced. That is true love
Dr. Ward told Bored Panda that around 90 percent of a cat’s weight loss is related to diet and only 10 percent has to do with physical activity. So it’s vital that you don’t overfeed your cat.
“That's why it's so important cat owners precisely feed the correct number of calories each day. I recommend having your veterinarian assess your cat's current Body Condition Score (BCS), setting target an ideal weight, and calculating the number of calories you should feed each meal,” the pet healthcare professional said.
“I strongly encourage cat owners to weigh the food using a kitchen scale. We've done experiments with cat owners and veterinary professionals and have consistently observed that using a measuring cup isn't as accurate as needed to achieve weight loss in many cases,” Dr. Ward said.
Tommy Boy Has Been Successfully Dechonked
I like how the floofy catto is sitting near dumbbells. Working out !
Wonderful to see how this cat looks happier in life ( and great looks ! ). Its the responsiblity of the owner to show true love
From Almost 20 lbs To 14 lbs. He’s A Larger Cat Than Normal But Now He’s A Lean, Large Cat
He is totally a majestic boy. He has that look in his second pic that he looks like royalty.
20 pounds may not be overweight for some cats. This beauty must be small boned. Gorgeous and healthy.
Rehomed This Little Big Buddy A Little Over A Year Ago. Meet Big Tony
Great and welcomed change in the life of this cat. Beautiful to see
“Even feeding as few as ten extra kibbles each day can add up to a pound of weight gain in a year for a cat. Once you get the hang of it, weighing the food takes no more time than using a measuring cup. Finally, work with your vet to adjust the diet or calories every three months if your cat isn't losing weight.”
He continued: “I've seen too many cats who were being fed the same food for months without losing weight. When I ask them why, the pet parent shrugs, ‘I'm feeding the special food my vet prescribed.’ Weight loss is a journey with many unexpected turns and hills; you must stay alert and be willing to take a different path if you're not reaching your objective.”
Dr. Ward said that exercise for cats can be very simple. For example, all it takes are three 5-minute play sessions with a laser pointer, feather duster, or new cardboard box each day.
Adopted This Cute Overweight Kitty, Put Him On A Diet And After A Few Years He Had Less Than Half The Weight Of When I First Got Him
Seems to be the case for a lot of these cats. :)

Dechonkification? Completed It
oof these ppl are so good at helping these cats lose wait that im thinking of hiring them for me 😂
You should buy a giant cat tree it will be good for your shape, but be careful with side effects. You may have a craving for dry food, following people in the bathroom and knocking things off of shelves.
Load More Replies...Wow! Doesn't even look like the same kitty. Thank you for getting him to a healthy weight so he can enjoy the rest of his life ♡
Magnificent result ! A dignified cat. From a true loving responsible owner
Yup! "Dechonking" is real" while detoxing is what our bodies do 24/7.
She’s Proud Of The Post-Diet Body
What a gorgeous cat! I love tortoiseshell cats- they definitely have some "catitude" though.
Beautiful girl and she should be proud of post diet body..she looks great
Brave owner. It is not easy to put a cat on a diet. It is showing real love. Wonderful.
“I also like using ‘hunter feeders’ and food puzzles to engage a cat's ‘inner predator.’ Use vertical surfaces, climbing towers, and other perches to allow your cat to climb and ‘stalk’ as much as possible. Environmental enrichment and exercise are essential for emotional and behavioral health as well as maintaining a lean body mass.”
According to Dr. Ward, cats can safely lose 1 to 3 percent of their body mass each month, as long as they’re on a vet-supervised weight loss program. “That translates to my target weight loss of about a half-pound per month for most cats. If a cat loses too much weight too quickly or is fed too little, it can develop a life-threatening form of liver failure, so be sure to work closely with your veterinarian before beginning any diet program with your cat.”
This Is Amy. She’s Been Living At The Shelter For Over A Year And No One Wanted Her Because She Has Weight Issues. But I Do As Well So We’re On A Diet Together
She’s doing great and lost a little bit of weight already. She even plays with our other cat. Her stomach doesn’t hang on the floor anymore either and she’s always walking around the house
She's probably always walking around because she CAN now. Way to go.
HOW do you manage to diet one cat with another in the house?! I've been trying, but they get into each other's food.
Barsik Came From A Shelter At 41 lbs. He Is On A Vet-Supervised Diet And Losing Steadily
All I can think of is how much less discomfort he must be in. Such a difference.
This cat looked like he was so depressed. Thank you and all admiration for what you have done for him ! He is getting life back
That nose is so cute ... that tummy will shrink as he starts getting around more. Hope he finds a good home! 😍
Wonderful progress, so, so happy for His life to begin have his endless fun back!
He Went From 20 To 14 Pounds
When Bored Panda reached out to PDSA, the UK’s leading vet charity, representatives of the organization told us about the negative effects of obesity, as well as how slowly cats ought to lose weight.
“Cats love to keep their coat clean. Overweight or obese cats often struggle to reach certain areas of their body which can lead to poor grooming and knots developing in their fur,” PDSA explained. “Cats carrying extra weight often lead a less active lifestyle which can lead to further weight gain and also can contribute to poor mental health.”
They continued: “Obesity in cats can also increase the risk of certain diseases such as diabetes, liver problems (such as a fatty liver), bladder problems, and breathing problems in some breeds. Excess weight on joints can contribute to the development of arthritis.”

Look At My Handsome Boy's Progress
Mr handsome boy here knows he looks good.. look at those eyes in his 2nd picture..😍
What a change in his eyes ! Congratulations for what you are doing for him ! Wonderful act of real love
PDSA advises following your vet’s guidance when it comes to diet changes and going for a slow and steady weight loss program instead of one that’s rushed. “We don't want to starve our pets and quickly cutting back on their food can mean they are not eating enough nutrients to maintain a healthy balance which can be harmful,” the team over at PDSA commented.
“Set small, realistic goals which can help reach a bigger long term goal, take pictures and compare your cat against a body condition chart looking at:
1. Look at your cat from the side and from above. They should have a waist.
2. Feel under your cat’s tummy. It should curve in, not bulge out.
3. Feel along your cat’s side and back. You should be able to feel their ribs, spine, and hip bones quite easily but they shouldn’t stick out.
4. Feel the base of your cat’s tail where it meets the spine. There shouldn’t be a build-up of fat.”

Travis’ Weight Loss Progress From 2017 To 2019
We had a diabetic cat who lived to be 18 years old. He had to have insulin twice a day, and we could only give him 1/3 of a cup of high protein food twice a day. We got him at 30 pounds. His healthy weight was 24 pounds - he was a bruiser and half Maine C**n. ...///... He was a happy guy. Eventually we had to put him down not because of the diabetes, but because he had degenerative bone disease - in human terms, severe osteoarthritis.

Is it me or is that kitty giving us a "I know I am too sexy" look?!
My Senior Rescue Boy Went From Full Loaf To Slice Of Bread
When I got him he was so shy that he only came out at night. He's lost about 1.5 kg (about 3.3 pounds) since January. Went from 6.9 kg to ~5.4-5.5 kg.
Bosie (full name: Lord Alfred Pawglas, customarily addressed as "His Lordship") is a 7-year-old tabby striped calico boy who was surrendered because he couldn't cope with the addition of two babies, two other cats and a dog to the household (all in <2 years!).
Dechonking him mostly took switching him to moderated amounts of wet food with a very small portion of kibble per day in a puzzle feeder or puzzle toy.
Striking results ! Awesome looks. Thank you and congratulations for taking matter in hands. You chose the welfare of the cat over facility. You acted with true love
Thanks for taking in that beautiful little boy. He now is truly the “Lord” of the house and he deserves it❤️. Kisses for both of you💋
Currently, nearly 60 percent of all indoor cats in the United States are overweight. Carrying around a lot of excess weight has negative effects on your cat’s quality of life; they’re much happier and healthier when they’re sleek and slim. Obesity increases your cat’s risk of getting diabetes. The good news is that shedding the pounds can, in some cases, get rid of their diabetes completely.
Obese cats are also at risk of contracting feline lower urinary tract disease (aka FLUTD): losing weight, changing your cat’s diet, and helping it manage stress all help get rid of it. Meanwhile, fat cats are nearly 5 times more likely than lean felines to develop lameness.
All that extra weight can lead to a lot of other health issues. For example, fat tissue can be a source of constant inflammation throughout the body and this can lead to other diseases. All that fat tissue is also sending out stress-increasing hormones throughout your cat’s system. So even if your chonky catto seems fine, it’s best for it to drop a few pounds before real problems start showing up.
Chonk Progress
Doesn’t even look like the same cat. Great job in helping him live a longer life❣️
So Two Years Ago The Vet Told Me Muffin Needed To Go On A Diet. Well Look At This Before And After Shot! I'm So Proud Of Her

A Reformed Chonker
Basically my granny was this cat's owner until she died in 2018 (Mitzi was very overweight when my granny adopted her as it was believed she was a stray had been fed by students) and since then Mitzi had unfortunately been stuck going in and out of the shelter for a while and making quite a few headlines and never quite meeting the right owner. Due to a lucky coincidence, a family member of mine who had originally wanted to adopt her in the first place moved into accommodation where pets were allowed at a time Mitzi was back at the shelter and they adopted her finally this year. She's been slowly losing weight and as you can see she's a lot better now! She will never look as slim as she weighs unfortunately due to her excess skin but she's in a much healthier place than before and her temperament has improved dramatically!
She is georgeous ( and always was ). . It is good to see that she is now in good hands, and on her way to happy healthy life. She could not be comfortable and happy with the weight she had. She looks like a miracle !
Mitzi deserves the best. So glad she finally has a good home with someone who really loves her❤️
The best, overarching reason for keeping your cat slim is longevity. Pets that aren’t obese lead longer, healthier lives. So you’ll have the pleasure of being ignored by your cat far longer if you don’t overfeed it. And remember—it’s not just about losing weight, it’s about keeping it off.
Speaking of overfeeding, clinical nutrition professor Megan Shepherd from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine told NPR that there are plenty of owners that struggle with not giving their pets too much food.
“It's not hard to overfeed them in a 'food is love' culture,” Shepherd said.

18 Pounds To A Healthy 11. Still Whines For Food Constantly
I rescued her at 18 pounds. Her previous owner just left dry food out for her 24/7 because she would whine when her food bowl was slightly empty. She's a very chatty cat
We had to put my kitty on a diet as well. He will spend all day trying to convince you that he is STARVING!
Mine gets 'hangry' - when he thinks it time to eat he starts knocking things off of the coffee table, fighting with the other cats, howling, generally wreaking havoc until it's time to feed him!
Load More Replies...I think all cats whine for food. I fed mine a can of tuna yesterday. When my husband got home, the cat whined as if I forgot to feed him. Liar.
Our one cat was starting to go a bit too large. Dr Vet told us to cut out dry kibble, except as a small treat. Dry = weight gain, especially free-feed. Canned = weight loss. And it worked. Caught him in time.
This is my cat, too. I had 3 and left the food out all day. She is the only one that gorged herself to 18 pounds. After 15 months she is now 14 lbs and lies all the time about being hungry.
Cats, in the wild, do eat multiple meals in a day. Just think if a small burger (mouse) would fill you up for the day. Leaving kibble down is a disaster waiting to happen. So our Cats Only Vet suggested leaving a tablespoon of wet out and let them nibble on that. Weight is now under control. But do ask your vet if this is right for your kitties. Check health first.

Totally agree! Nice seeing responsible and loving cat owners succeed!
Load More Replies...Very encouraging! But more importantly, HOW??? We've been trying to get out house master to lose some weight, and following the vet's instructions strickly. Yet, the house master is still a chunky boy :/
It takes time! Smaller food portions, regular catsercize and patience. Some cats compensate for less food by becoming less active. Don't expect them to get on a treadmill by themselves. Buy toys and commit to at least two moments a day where you take the time to play with him.
Load More Replies...The earlier images reflect cats that must have been in true discomfort if not acute pain. So happy to see such improvements. Such caring owners!
I really don't like it when people type "chonk!" and think it's cute. Obesity is a real problem for pets, and unlike humans, you can't talk to them about diet and exercise. Sure, some probably have a metabolic disorder and might need medication and frequent vet visits...But most are just overfed or fed the wrong types of foods (ie: 99% of all human food). I hope that moving forward, Bored Panda won't post "chonk" pics anymore, unless they're like these; showing positive action and results. Websites like this one are partially responsible for "chonk" being considered a cute thing.

Any Cat food with Grains in it is horrible for them. Farmers feed cattle and pigs grain to fatten them up! It does the same thing to humans. I quit eating grains, wheat, breads, carbs, etc.. and lost 45 lbs in 3 months. No gym either!
In commercial foods for cats, and dogs, one of the first ingredients is ground yellow corn. #1 cause of hot spots and allergies in dogs, and just plain terrible for a cat's metabolism. Cats don't metabolize carbs so that stuff is truly - c**p. Going a little more expensive can save the person money in vet visits. Congrats on your success!
