Multiplying the ways in which consumers can interact with your brand is often quite the challenge.
It usually requires companies to branch outside of their comfort zones, much like an oral hygiene business diving into the world of frozen foods.
So we at Bored Panda decided it would be interesting to take a look at the times when big names announced products they weren't really known for.
After all, he who never takes risks doesn't get to drink champagne, right?

Audi Is Dog Friendly. My Car Came Back From The Service With These Dog Toys On The Back Seat. Both Of My Labrador Retrievers Went Nuts
Little things like this can create brand loyalty so easily. People love their pets, so if a company does something pet friendly we're gonna not only stick with them, but advertise them for free online!
I’m all fairness, once you’ve owned an Audi, you never want a different kind of car. They’re wonderful!
Load More Replies...My grandpa owns an audi and he would go to the officials garage. The last time he went he took me and I really liked one of the toy cars. My grandpa asked about it, even willing to pay. They said no. They went to get the manager. The manager let me take a different smaller one. After years of service there my grandpa just felt embarrassed and started going to the local shop instead. I got many toy cars over the years after that.

It's easy to understand why companies decide to diversify. 65% of CEOs of large companies around the world predict that in five to seven years, their firms' main competitors would be different from their main competitors today, and 63% say that new competitors with new business models would pose a major threat to their firms' core business.
The CEOs estimate that in the next decade, 40% of the value their companies created would come from entering new markets and launching new business models. Clearly, the business landscape feels highly unstable to them, which is no surprise given that new technologies continue to upend industries and wipe out businesses at a remarkable rate.
My Dad Owns A Working 40-Year-Old Mitsubishi Sharpener And You Can Adjust The Sharpness Of A Pencil
Mitsubishi is one of the old Japanese mega corps called zaibatsu. They have since been broken up into smaller companies and that's why you can find anything from Mitsubishi cars and banks to nuclear power plants and, indeed, pencil sharpeners. Fun fact: Mitsubishi means "Three diamonds", so now you know where the logo comes from.
I'm not much of an artist, but I'll bet being able to control the graphite thickness like that has it's uses
Yep. Sharper pencils make thinner, more solid lines for outlines and fine details. Duller pencils make thicker lines, and can be smudged to shade an area (like a shadow, cheekbones, or feathers).

Just Bought A Porsche Today, And They Gave Us Paper Clips Shaped Like Porsches
I keep seeing your comments, so from now on, every time i see one, I'm going to say hello. Expect to see me again.
Load More Replies...Why are so many people unpleasant? Somebody buys a Porsche, their choice, their money. You don’t like Porsche, great, don’t buy one, but why be mean? Does it make you feel big or clever? If it does, I think you’re mistaken, because it just makes you seem petty and unkind.
Right? Also the “ I bought an expensive car and only got free paper clips?” You got what you spent your money on? Why do people expect free stuff after?
Load More Replies...Much better than the dog bone paper clips that show up here from time to time
If I were to spend THAT MUCH on a car, I personally would want something more than a tin of paperclips. Just sayin.
I see their logo but my first impression was "They made Ford Pinto paperclips?"
They gave us two baseball caps, the paper clips, and a nifty paperweight with the VIN on it,
The good news to them is that now is a great time for companies to try to build new engines of profitable growth.
One study estimated that global investment capital had tripled in the past three decades and stood at 10 times the global GDP.
Additionally, high-growth industries today don't require as much investment as they once did; disruptive businesses can scale up faster in size and power with less capital.

I'll never forget my adult sister walking through a department store, seeing a set of knives and saying, "I wonder if this is sharp" while dragging it along her thumb. That knife was sharper than her, that's for sure.
They should instead send you cut-resistant gloves. Not expensive at all.

This Was In An NHS Hospital In The UK. They Have A Toy MRI Machine In The Hospital Waiting Room
seems like a good idea to help children who are scared of an MRI machine get over their fear
I'm 55 and need one to help me with my fear of friggin MRIs
Load More Replies...It looks a lot like the MRI machine I was in a few months ago. They have really changed over the years!
Load More Replies...They have those in the Netherlands too. The nurse uses it to show the kid how an MRI works, she puts toy animals in it, that have a chip in them that activates a movie on a tv screen next to it. The video shows that the toy animal all have something inside them, for example the toy chicken has a golden egg in it's belly. And afterwards the kid can play with the machine for as long as it wants. It helps kids be much less afraid. Before this, they used to explain everything at the actual MRI machine, which occupies the MRI room for a long time. Now they can explain most of it with the toy MRI, so the actual machine is occupied shorter so they can scan more people in a day.
I would be in there, sitting on the floor, giving MRI's to all of the animals.
*ahem* ct scanner, but still a good way to teach children not to be afraid of going to the doctor.
Are you certain? The last MRI I had was in a machine not terribly bigger.
Load More Replies...However, experts point out that diversification is an unpredictable, high-stakes game. First of all, companies usually face the decision in an atmosphere not conducive to thoughtful deliberation.
For instance, an attractive company comes into play, and a competitor is interested in buying it. Or the board of directors strongly urge expanding into new markets. Suddenly, senior managers must gather mountains of data—including internal rate-of-return calculations, market forecasts, and competitive assessments—under huge time pressure.
Diversification as a corporate strategy goes in and out of vogue on a regular basis. Simply put, there is little conventional wisdom to guide managers as they consider a move that could greatly increase shareholder value or seriously damage it.

Load More Replies...My Neighbours Also Park Their Lamborghini In Their Front Yard
Well, after all they started as tractor-producing company. Car production came as the result of owner's dissatisfaction with Ferrari cars.
He went to complain, and they told him "Why don't you build your own cars." "I might do." Biggest anime rivalry was born that day.
Load More Replies...In 1963, Ferruccio Lamborghini was unhappy with the clutch in his Ferrari. So he went to see Enzo Ferrari in person and tried to make suggestions about how to improve the clutch design. Enzo brushed him off with the statement “Let me make cars. You stick to making tractors.” Ferruccio got mad, went home, and started building his first sports car to compete against Ferrari.
I guess this one is only surprising if you didn't know Lamborghini made tractors long before Ferrari ticked him off and sold off the tractor company to make cars.
Lamborghini used to build military and police vehicles too.
Load More Replies...isnt that how Lambougini started though as an arguement and this tractor driver made the car
The first time I heard about these were from Jeremy Clarkson / Top Gear.
Many car companies make other things. GM helped make the first bypass machine and still manufactured llocomotives. Honda makes locomotives. Ferrari also makes tractors. And as mentioned in another post, Mitsubishi makes pretty much everything
Ferrari NEVER made anything besides sports cars and race cars. They cobranded a few times, with DuPont or something of that league. The greater company above Ferrari, FCA, does in fact produce various brands of agricultural machinery of pretty much any kind thinkable.
Load More Replies...Before diversifying, businessmen must think not about what their company does but about what it does better than its competitors.
Consider the history of Blue Circle Industries, a British company that is one of the world's leading cement producers.
In the 1980s, Blue Circle decided to diversify on the basis of an unclear definition of its business. It was, the company’s managers thought, in the business of making products related to home building. So Blue Circle expanded into real estate, bricks, waste management, gas stoves, bath-tubs—even lawn mowers.

The Ketchup And Mayonnaise Packets I Got From A Restaurant With My Food Are The Opposite Brands Off What I Would Consider Their Specially
Heinz made the mayo and Hellmann's made the ketchup.
I was at a restaurant once where they had Heinz mustard and French's ketchup. I thought I'd slipped into an alternate universe.
Lol. Why do I feel like the restaurant ordered it this way on purpose to mess with people?
Well, mayo is one of Heinz's 57 varieties. I've never seen Hellmann's (or Best Foods) ketchup before. But what I did see at Walmart was a shelf full of McCormick's mayonessa (mayonnaise w/lime juice)). McCormick, as in the spice company.

Our family weren't smokers but neighbours were. I remember they used to get tokens or tickets or something in the packs, save enough and you could order from the catalogue

More fun facts, it’s their most produced part. So actually VW is more a sausage factory than car factory. :p They also make a VW ketchup that goes with the currywurst.

Per Wikipedia : "Part #199 398 500 A The sausage is branded as a "Volkswagen Original Part" and has been given the part number 199 398 500 A. The product has been described as the most produced of any of Volkswagen's parts, some 6.81 million sausages being manufactured in 2018." And the Volkswagen part number for the ketchup is 199 398 500 B.
Strange but true story here. The day Robin Williams died (RIP) i was flying back from Scotland to France where i live and the guy sitting next to me in the plane explained what VW meant, the peoples car. Turns out he was the son of a preacher and he turned to god himself. Found out later that he wasn't doing good for the kids he was looking after. I so wish i could have kicked TF out of him when he was next to me on that plane. Sadly every time i see a VW i think of that tw@t.
He was right. VW stands for Volkswagen which literally translates to peoples car (Volk - folk/ nation/ the people + Wagen - car)
Load More Replies...Unfun fact: The VW motor company was created by order of Hitler during Third Reich, to copy the Ford motor company and provide an affordable car for the common people. A key difference is that Ford paid his employees well, helped them find housing, and provided their families with education resources; VW started out by using slave labor (forced labor AND concentration camps). To hell with their Nazi sausages.

See, this is why no-one bought their line of food products. The name association was just too nasty.
Load More Replies...They could have just invented a new brand name for their food products, and they would just need a to put 'by Colgate' in small print on the back. That's what many huge companies that have their hands many different pies do, for example Nestle, Mars, Danone' most of their products they give a different name to and you wouldn't even know it was them. Look up all the different brands owned by Nestle for example.
But instead bechamel saúde, it hás minty fresh toothpast sauce lol.
I associate the name Colgate so strongly with the taste of toothpaste that this one makes me feel uncomfortable. It sounds like a bad choice, marketing wise, to not make a new brand name for the new branch of your company, because surely I'm not the only one who has those associations.

No it's not the single most common surname in Italy. The most common Italian surname is Rossi, which is more like Smith. Ferrari is popular but it's more like the 3rd or 4th most common, it's more like Jones or Brown. Moreover this is clearly the Ferrari car brand logo, so this lift was either made by them or someone licensed it for some reason. Hence it's not some rando brand with the same name.

That's sour cream and onion flavoured yakisoba, made similarly to cup ramen but you drain the water out first through a filter built into the paper lid. It came out not too long ago in Japan and it was prettttty bad.

I Don't Know Where They Came From But My Son Has McDonald's Brand Pants
McKids was a chain of clothing stores marketed to children and operated by the McDonald's Corporation through a partnership with Sears. (Or at least that's what Wikipedia says.)
McKids had tons of baby and toddler clothes when my first daughter was born in 1997! I remember she had little infant dresses that were McKids!
Hand me downs flood in when you have a kid, and often new parents are too polite to decline for risk of hurting the feelings of an aging relative/neighbor/friend. People will literally drop off garbage bags filled with their child's outgrown clothes on your doorstep. We got 18 (not exaggerating) giant bags full of clothes from coworkers from just my husband's work alone. I got at least double that. Then, my sisters started giving me stuff. My mother's friends would send her home with stuff. THEN we had our baby shower, and although we asked for no clothing, we got 52 full outfits ranging from preemie to 6 months, and 20 or so that were 9-12 month. In the end, we were overwhelmed with hand me downs that we never asked for, but were too polite to say no. It doesn't help that the first person we said no thank you to got really upset and told people we were "judging" her.... So yeah, it happens, it's common, and if you know enough people it's a huge problem.

You can get McDonalds sauce in Australia, at coles. it's called "burger sauce" because Maccas didn't do it themselves and who wants to get sued?
Isn't the "special sauce" from McDonalds just thousand island dressing with pickle relish?

Not abnormal. I can go my local Safeway and buy a jar of Panda Express orange chicken sauce, or Chik Fil A sauce, or a jar of Taco Bell hot sauce, and even a bag of frozen Arby's curly fries. We're living in Blade Runner
You can get Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, and Olive Garden sauces here in the US, too.
pshaw. you can get the whole lineup of Whataburger sauces in our local grocery stores.

Not really made/branded by BMW. It's just a water of a different brand that had THAT label removed and replaced with a custom one. Much the way someone might do this for a themed party
This is true. I glued a bunch of labels on bottles for my daughter's 3rd birthday party at Gymboree, lol. I figured the kids would be running all over the place and theres a ton of people on Etsy selling custom bottle labels :)

The Engine On My Plane This Morning Was Made By Rolls-Royce
Yea RR makes plane engines since WW2 mate, the Spitfire, the Lancaster, the American P40 Mustang and even a German bomber ( i forgot the model ) had RR engines
P-40 was the Curtiss Warhawk. Not knocking ya, it was just built by my grandmother and i'm proud of her.
Load More Replies...They were making aircraft engines decades before the cars showed up. Only GE makes more aircraft engines today than they do.
The Rolls Royce Aviation Assembly is in Indianapolis, IN as is the design headquarters. My neighbors works as an aviation engineer. He has two really sweet dogs name Buddy and Leon, and Leon wears sunglasses because he has something wrong with his eyes.
Not the same company. Rolls Royce, the aircraft engine maker, sold (back in the early 1900's) the Rolls Royce automobile marque and division, as well as the use of the Rolls Royce name and logo to the car (and aircraft) maker Haviland who built the Rolls Royce cars; and BMW built the engines for those cars. Then in the early 2000's Haviland sold the carbrand Rolls Royce to Volkswagen, and because of that BMW refused to build any more engines for Rolls Royce cars, thus effectively killing the brand. So Volkswagen sold the now dead brand to BMW for pennies, and now the automotive brand Rolls Royce belongs to BMW, and the Rolls Royce aircraft engine brand belongs to Rolls Royce.
Yep.Rolls-Royce makes alot of the engines for the military as well.
I believe they also made Centurion tank engines which have a starter motor engine to kick over the main RR engine and the starter is the same type which is used in Mini Minors

Dove Beauty Bars And Dove Chocolates
Actually two different companies, despite the similar logo and the soap being so delicious
No, these are 2 different companies not in any way related. Dove chocolate started as a candy store in the 1930s and is owned by Mars. Dove soap is owned and made by Unilever.
Didn’t realise this was the same thing, thought Dove was an American copy of Galaxy, but tastes totally different
Dove and Galaxy on the chocolate side of things are the same chocolate, American chocolate would taste different to a non-American given they have different ingredients. Dove soap and Dove chocolate are completely different brands.
