    A Pub Argument

The idea of Guinness Book of Records came to Sir Hugh Beaver in the 1950's when he had an argument in a pub about the fastest game bird in Europe. Since he couldn't find an answer in any of the books, he decided to compile a book of facts and figures to help settle pub arguments just like the one he had.

Another hardly believable fact about ferrets: Beoing used to employ them to build aircraft! Ferrets just love getting into tight places, so when you need wires run down a long, narrow section of conduit, just tie them to a ferret and let them go!

I read articles on why they were brought over to the united states to run wires through pipes. Hunt moles on farm land. Some people even used them to help set up stage rigging's. Spy on the farmers wife while shes with the farm hand and report back with detailed notes. They were brought over and put to work. All but one of those is true.

Of course - after all, the lighter is just an automated version of bit of flint striking steel, which as THE preferred method for lighting fires for thousands of years. The first automated lighter was derived from the wheel-lock musket when the latter appeared around 1500 and was simply a toothed wheel driven by clockwork rotates against bit of flint to create sparks. You could also add a bit of gunpowder as an accelerator. Unfortunately, they were very expensive, so only nobles got to have them until 1823, when Döbereiner "Feuerzeug" tabletop lighter was invented, a hilariously complicated and unsafe mechanism containing zinc and sulphuric acid to make hydrogen which then reacts with a platinum metal sponge to create a flame... Frankly, I'm not sure that one was an improvement...
