Though it’s literally impossible to know everything there is to know in the universe, there are some fundamental things about being a human being in the modern world that everyone should strive to know. Core skills like cooking and cleaning allow you to be self-sufficient. Meanwhile, knowing how antibiotics work, why cat bites can be dangerous, and what chemicals to never ever mix together can actually end up saving your life.

Reddit users had a very informative discussion on r/NoStupidQuestions in a thread that went viral. They shared the pieces of ‘basic’ knowledge that everyone should know, but that a scary number of people may be oblivious about. Check out what they feel is vital to know in the 21st century as you keep scrolling.

Bored Panda got in touch with Glenn Geher, Ph.D., who was kind enough to shed some light on the evolutionary reasons why people might get embarrassed about not knowing something that others do. He also shared his thoughts on how to fill those knowledge gaps and whether it's easier to survive in the modern world than in the far past. Geher is a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at New Paltz and a published author, and you'll find our full interview with him as you read on.

Best research shows genetically linked but features tend to appear in child around same time as rounds of vaccines...there's a slew of parents never diagnosed as children but realize they need assessment as well when their child is diagnosed with asd. & voila, the parent discovers they have asd too - vaccines causing asd is nonsense

That b******t was yet another instance of "single study stupidity" A single study made the connection in the mid 90's, the media blew it out of proportion, the entire world scrambled to replicate the findings....and couldn't. The study was retracted with one of the researchers admitting that the claims were patently FALSE. Which the media didn't cover nearly as heavily. The nonsense mostly died down....until Oprah, piece of trash that she is, allowed Jenny McCarthy to come on and stir the stupid pot again, and "well if it wasn't true, why would Oprah let her say it on her show?!" 30 years, the entire scientific community hasn't managed to find one single piece of supporting evidence....but who gives a s**t, right? Your chances of getting smallpox....are just like SO LOW. Morons.

They do not. There seems to be a link between glysophate and autism, but it's still in research and too early to prove.

I have heard older people say that anyone who is a native English speaker and still says “should of, could of” etc didn’t read a lot of books growing up at all, so when they hear someone say the contraction “should’ve” out loud, they actually hear the words “should of” and didn't develop a large enough English vocabulary and understanding to realize that makes no sense 😅 not sure how accurate that is but it’s interesting to ponder! It’s crazy how many tiny things you can pick up on when you’re a reader!

Exactly. There should be massive class actions against any corporation labeling a wipe as flushable - not just by the homeowners’ who has had their house flooded, but by every council, town, and city that has its sewers backed up, and by every plumber who has had to deal with the clogs.

if 'flushable" means getting them to go with the water down the drain then definitely, they are flushable. The real issue is that they don't break down easily like toilet paper and they are usually not biodegradable so they usually clog up pipes until your flush will not work anymore

Especially if you have a septic system! Wipes and tampons will take on water and nicely plug up your leach field. A small trash can lined with a small garbage bag is what you want. You can stick an air freshener to the inside of the lid if you're worried about unpleasant odors (and the fact that the trash can is small means you empty it frequently).

Bored Panda wanted to get Professor Geher's thoughts on the evolutionary perspective behind embarrassment at one's knowledge gaps.

"In so many ways part of the human social experience pertains to seeking some sort of status within a group," he said.

"If you're the one who does not know what others see as 'common knowledge,' this fact might not bear well for your social standing as you might not come off as that smart," Dr. Geher told us via email.

"For this reason, people are often hesitant to admit that they don't know something that everyone else seems to know."

No means no. It doesn't matter who is saying it. If you ever ask or suggest something that requires the cooperation or permission of another person and they say no, you MUST respect that.

Jesus. No. This is just as short-sighted as saying every politician is a selfless hero. If you don't like your representation, change it. That's what I did. I joined a small and young party in my country. I helped us win mandares in local and national government. The city council representative of my electoral district is a dude my age who I can text ifI have an issue. When a pipe broke in our street he posted on social media within two hours explaing what's wrong and what the minicipality is doing. When I wasn't sure about a building safety regulation, I messaged him and he helped our building like a local council represe tarive should. Tgey also aid residents by findi g and peoviding information on reside tial renocation subsidies. Everything is politics, including you complaining about politics. And saying things like this is counterproductive because it discourages people from utilizing their rights. If you don't like something, change it.

Power doesn't corrupt. It's like alcohol. It reveals who you really are. Corrupt politicians aren't corrupt because of power. They are corrupt because they can now get away with it, and power absolves them from having to put on a mask and play by the rules. Not everyone is corrupted by power and likewise, you don't necessarily need power to become corrupt. How many people will return a wallet they found on the street to the owner with the money still inside? And how many would take out the money? The second group only needs an excuse to get away with breaking the rules. The first is driven by principle.

Also note a great number of politicians when leaving office (unless going to a jail cell) seem to have more money, far more profitable investments and the potential of a new higher paying position than before entering office. This seems to be a fairly normal event regardless of which side of the aisle they were sitted in.

It's a bit more subtle than that. Most politicians see the point in legislating for the common good, but far too many of them acquiesce to their moneyed interests (their backers) and tend to become jaded quickly. In the U.S. the revolving door between politics and industry causes a great deal of corruption.

This is kind of a self fulfilling prophecy. In presidential elections, 40-48% of the population DOES NOT VOTE Midterm turnout is 30-35% (i maintain the pride in the 49.6% turnout in 2018 is still sad) Every other election...is just embarrassingly low....and those smaller elections, are the ones most likely to impact meaningful change on your life and community in the short term. But all of them matter, and the MAJORITY OF PEOPLE DO NOT GRASP THIS. All they know about candidates is their campaign slogans. Most people don't care about anything beyond a single key issue that's important to themselves, and that's kind of the problem. EVERYONE is thinking in terms of THEMSELVES, their group, their cause, and anything and everything else just doesn't rate. You get the government that you elect....actively or passively. Stop pretending that you don't have a hand in it.

We were also curious whether it's actually easier to survive in the 21st century compared to life a long time ago,, especially in developed countries. According to Dr. Geher, from the State University of New York at New Paltz, it's not as clear-cut as someone might think.

"In some ways, living is easier these days relative to our ancestral, nomadic past. For instance, searching for food nowadays often involves opening one's refrigerator as opposed to going out for a 6-hour hunt," he explained to Bored Panda.

"That said, many features of the modern world are sorely mismatched from ancestral conditions and for this reason, the modern 'conveniences' often come back to harm us. So we might be able to eat lots of cheap processed foods easily and cheaply, but this fact may come back to haunt us later in life in the form of a number of health problems such as Type-II diabetes."

The professor had some suggestions on how someone might go about filling in their knowledge gaps in the 21st century. "Learning about our evolved psychology and evolutionary past is often a good start. Understanding that humans evolved to live in small groups of familiar others under nomadic conditions can help us go a long way toward understanding the broader human experience," Professor Geher said.

"I often say that to succeed in the modern day, it is often best to try to simulate ancestral conditions as much as possible. So, for instance, if you live in a large city of hundreds of thousands of people, it would be wise to form some smaller social groups that better resemble the small nomadic groups that characterized human social organization for the lion's share of human evolutionary history."

NO NO NO NO NO and again NO!!!!! Please don't be swayed towards inaction by this foolishly misleading statement. While technically true, companies are producing pollutants because the consumers (that's YOU) keeps using their products. The more you buy or use unsustainable products and services, the more they will produce. You need to identify the companies, along with all their subsidies, and stop using them where possible.

Wear clothes until they're falling apart, don't just dump them because they're gone out of style. Spend more for a better product that lasts three years instead of the cheap one that needs replacing every year.

Who do you think they produce it for? For their own fun? No, they do all this so they can produce stuff for us. If we stop buying from them and start buying from companies that do it in a environmentally better way, the other companies will follow. We are just as responsible as them. We do also need laws that force companies to stop doing certain things, and that force them to be transparent, because when companies don't disclose information about their materials, production process, and so, then it's hard and sometimes even impossible for customers to know which product/company does the least environment damage.

“Babies Below 6 Months Shouldn’t Drink Water”: 50 Facts That Really Should Be Common Knowledge Rags soaked with paint thinner, varnish, oil-based paint, polyurethane, and/or other volatile oils can actually spontaneously combust without any outside ignition source. The oils slowly release heat as they oxidize, and for example in a pile at the bottom of a garbage can, that heat can build enough to start smoldering and eventually ignite. I didn't know about this until a year or two ago, so don't feel dumb if you didn't know either.

Some experts think this might be how egyptian king Tutankhamun's mummy got its nasty burn marks - some embalmers, rushed and in a hurry, are said to have left some rags soaked with linen oil in the bandages - which later spontanously combusted.

That's also why certain companies aren't allowed to store their dirty work clothes inside of the building, because the work clothing (and towels, brushes, and so on) are covered in oil and become a fire hazard, so they have to store it outside, in fireproof containers.

Yes, if not stored and baled properly. Sometimes you need to wrap the bales in plastic to prevent this. Live on a farm. They just cut the entire hay field. They had to wait, if possible, for a number of days for what was laying in the field to dry out. Then have dry days while actually baling it. Really cool to watch. Otherwise they would have to go to the trouble and expense of covering the bales in plastic. For cloths that have flammable fluids, call your local govt and ask. Luckily, the area “waste station” will take them from you, no matter how few and dispose of safely.

Fire blanket, turn off the gas/heating ring, and leave it till it's cool/cold. Your meal can wait. The danger with trying an extinguisher is that the jet of material could spread the burning fat around the kitchen / back at you; but yes, water in any form will just get turned to steam and make things *much* worse, very rapidly.

It’s completely natural to have some knowledge gaps, even when it comes to ‘basic’ knowledge. Some people specialize in certain areas and can be completely ignorant in others. Meanwhile, other individuals might simply lack the education—or the time, money, and opportunities to plug those gaps.

Whatever the case, many people tend to create the illusion that they’re very knowledgeable. However, if something happens where they’re forced to admit to others and themselves that they may not be as smart as they thought they were, the person might get incredibly embarrassed.

After all, it’s not a great feeling to realize that you were ignorant about something that seemingly ‘everyone’ around you already knew. What’s important to understand here is that you’re not alone in this. Sooner or later, everyone’s faced with facts they either didn’t know or had misinterpreted.

My brother in law has schizophrenia. He says it's different for everyone but he has what he calls implanted memories. His words are so it's like one morning I will wake up and I will have a memory that could have happened at any point in my life. It could be something stupid like instead of writing a letter with a black pen I wrote it with a blue pen or it could be something big like losing a family member or something On some level I know it's a fake memory but the little ones are the worst. If I find the letter and it is in a different colour than what I remember writing it in then that really starts to play with my head and that can bring on a really bad episode That's his way of explaining things. I always found it massively interesting

“Babies Below 6 Months Shouldn’t Drink Water”: 50 Facts That Really Should Be Common Knowledge Salt will clean blood out of any fabric, even the whitest clothes or bedsheets. Just put a little heap of salt over the bloodied fabric. If the blood is dry, wet it with a few drops of cold water then put the pile of salt. Leave it for an hour or so, wipe the bloody salt off, then wash with soap. Edited to add that the water should be cold - see comments below about hot water setting the stain Edit 2 for people who menstruate: An early or particularly heavy visitor can lead to embarrassing situations sometimes, especially if (like me) you have woken up on a Japanese flag while sleeping over at someone else's house or at camp. Regular old table salt is something you can find basically anywhere you go, at any time of day or night, without arousing too many questions. You can pour a heap of salt on your stains (and put a few drops of cold water if the stain is already a bit dry), and it should be soaked up before too long. It will take the blood out of mattresses, sheets, and pajamas/underwear.

When blood apparently stains cloth it is actually just sitting there, waiting for you to make a mistake. What stains is the content of the red blood cells. If you wash it in hot water the cells burst and the contents do the damage. If you wash in simple cold water the water floods the cells by osmosis, again causing them to burst. The best thing is to soak them in 'simple saline', a saline mixture with a concentration the same as the body; think tears, and in tepid water, neither hot nor cold. This should detach the blood without bursting the cells.

Nurse can get blood on their uniform very easily. We stored an open bottle of hydrogen peroxide for just such an occasion. Don’t wait until it dries. Then it won’t take much and then rinse area right after with cold water, paper towel dry as much as possible. I’ve also seen club sofa pored on an already soaked up as much as possible first, red wine stain on a white carpet. Poured lots on and scrubbed and blotted. It worked.

“Babies Below 6 Months Shouldn’t Drink Water”: 50 Facts That Really Should Be Common Knowledge Different antibiotics work on different bacteria. You can’t take random antibiotics you’ve stocked up on at home and assume they will work for an infection. Doctors make an educated guess on what antibiotic to give for an infection. This is based on the probability of the infection being caused by a specific bacteria; this knowledge comes from research on what organisms most frequently cause certain infections in certain individuals.

Also quick PSA: DO NOT STOCK UP ON ANTIBIOTICS. Antibiotic resistance is a thing and if you are stocking up on antibiotics you are either not completing your course of antibiotics or buying and taking unnecessary medication.

The only correct thing about this is not to take antibiotics you’ve stored at home. You should ALWAYS finish your prescribed course to avoid developing your own resistance to the drug or the creation of multi- drug resistant organisms. Doctors will only prescribe presumptive antibiotics that cover a wide spectrum of organisms known to be involved in specific infections in simple situations. Cultures are taken and specific sensitivities are given in all other infection types.

I have antibiotics at home because the pills in the package were too much. I actually hate it that you can't just buy the prescribed amount and finish it. For example the last time I had to take antibiotics I was prescribed 10 days 2 times a day, one package was 15 pills, 2 packages 30 pills. So I have 10 pills left - not enough for treatment if such is needed in the near future.

A first subdivision into types of antibiotics is narrow- and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Narrow spectrum antibiotics are specifically suitable for infections by a certain group of bacteria. Broad-spectrum antibiotics work on more types of bacteria at the same time. Preference is given to the use of narrow spectrum antibiotics.

They can start you out on a broad spectrum antibiotic that cover all different kinds of bacteria. It’s a start. If needed they can culture the wound or draw blood to see if the infection is in there too. That gets a result of a specific antibiotic, or two that are used for your specific infection. It’s first of all an educated decision to get you started on something and then narrow it down further. Also, antibiotic administration during and around surgery has changed a great deal. Often they give your first dose IV as the surgeon makes their first cut. Then 8 hours later you get the next dose and then only one more. Most surgeries don’t involve antibiotics at all anymore. Depends on the kind of surgery.

This. For example amoxicillin inhibits the production of components (mucopeptides) of the wall surrounding some bacteria. Viruses do not have a mucopeptide wall that surrounds them. They're enveloped by a protein shell. Trying to inhibit something they don't even have won't do squat.

You should not keep antibiotics at home at all. As my doctor said, I have to take everything that's in the box when he prescribes it even if I feel better. It's a complete course of treatment. Next time, he'll prescribe another one or more of the same if necessary.

If you have joint replacements, you are required to have antibiotics on hand at all times as you have to take them an hour prior to any dental work or cleaning. There is some dispute about this today, but I choose to take the advice of my orthopaedic surgeon over my dentist on this one. I have seen the effects of infection in a joint replacement and it is not pretty.

Most coughs and colds and even minor bacterial infections can self-resolve. Be very careful about antibiotic use. And ALWAYS complete the course unless told not to by a healthcare professional, or serious anaphylactic allergy.

The best way to deal with embarrassing yourself in public, whether due to your lack of knowledge or anything else, is to embrace those somewhat uncomfortable feelings. As we’ve covered on Bored Panda before, the healthy way to react is to show mild embarrassment because it makes you seem more down to earth. Meanwhile pretending you didn’t make a mistake or getting angry about the whole situation is unhealthy and can turn your embarrassment about your (lack of) knowledge into deep-rooted shame.

The best way to deal with serious knowledge gaps is to carve out even a little bit of time every day to learn more about the topic. If it’s something that affects your career, schoolwork, or daily life, it only makes sense to make it a priority. However, it can be hard to do this if you’re working full time, have a family to take care of, and have a bunch of other responsibilities.

The United Kingdom (UK) is a country that consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The name Great Britain refers to the island on which most of the non-sovereign countries of England, Scotland, and Wales are situated. In casual use, the names Great Britain and Britain (and even sometimes England) are often used to refer to the UK even though Northern Ireland isn’t geographically part of the island of Great Britain.

The second one needs a bit of clarification for those here that disagree...what it essentially means is, your kids don't "owe" you compliance or time, or money etc. just because you brought them into the world and raised them up. Children didn't have a say in that fact, and parents were only doing their job. That being said, gratitude and time is always appreciated by both parents and children, where it is earned, and should be offered up at the very least. Furthermore, everyone should respect parents' decisions, advice, suggestions etc..It doesn't mean completely agreeing on things, but respecting the idea that they are older and have seen, heard, learned and experienced more than their children, and they just might know more. Now, there are obviously exceptions; bad parents can be toxic, so this statement is assuming a normal parent/child relationship about the world.

    Walter Brameld

2 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Close. While there are 365 days in a year, Earth actually rotates 366 times. Its rotation period is 4 minutes shorter than a day which, not coincidentally, adds up to one extra rotation per year. Why isn't the rotation period exactly 1 day? Because, as Earth orbits around the Sun, the direction to the Sun slowly moves eastward in the sky. So, the Earth makes a full rotation, but the Sun isn't in the same place it was before, so it has to rotate just a little more to get it back to the same place.

That’s why it’s important to focus on the idea that spending even just a little bit of time on something is better than none. Even 15 minutes of reading up on a subject you know nothing about is miles better than putting it off ‘until next week’ when you hope to have several free hours or feel more motivated.

Verywell Mind notes that it takes an average of 66 days to form a new habit. So incremental effort pays off, so long as you stay consistent. And though it really does help if you have the money for a proper education, it doesn’t mean that you can’t learn new things even if you’re struggling financially.

“Babies Below 6 Months Shouldn’t Drink Water”: 50 Facts That Really Should Be Common Knowledge Babies below 6 months shouldn’t drink water, it can be fatal. Edit: To clarify, water isn't just fatal. "But children under a year old don’t need water like adults do. It can actually be dangerous for them. Babies get all their hydration from breast milk or formula." Adding additional water can lead to water intoxication as children under 6 months have underdeveloped kidneys. If they have a mouthful of water of will they die? Most likely no, however everything I've read said not to give them plain water on top of their diet.

For babies milk/formula is food and water. Whwn they are thirsty they just have a tiny amount of milk. Their tumny can hold at first 1-2 teaspoons at the time. Water intoxication is what they can have, for same reasons above, also their kidney is not working, so they can't handle water.Excess water ends up in their bloodstream leading to hyponatremia, brainswelling. And because their brain is not developed either it leads quick to death.

If a baby has a temperature (and isn't in hospital) cooled boiled water will help to lower temperature, and doesn't need 'digesting' like breastmilk/formula. So long as your baby is normal weight and thriving, it's perfectly acceptable if it wakes 'hungry' 2 hourly instead of 3 or 4 it's ok to give an oz or 2 of water. A lot of the research was from formula fed babies whose mothers were encouraged not to breast feed, but couldn't afford the formula, so they diluted it, causing too much water, too little nutrition. Common sense here. Occasional water on hot days is perfectly acceptable.

Depending how old the baby is. Newborns kidneys are not developed, meaning can't process water. And their stomachs can only hold the amount of 1-2 teaspoon. That better be milk or formula, as water has no nutritional value for them

Maybe in your country, in mine the recommendation is absolutely NOTHING besides breast milk or formula. It has to be a very very specific case and authorized by a doctor (I work in a hospital). Also, it's not because it didn't killed your kids that it's safe to do it

In very hot weather it is reasonable to offer your baby small amount of water or their usual milk extra. Mineral water may have excess sodium or bicarb, but this is not all bottled water- the easiest way to know is to look at the dry residue amounts

Thats a perfect example why I find those "facto lists" on bp very often to be very annoying. The fact itself: babies below 6 m shouldnt drink water is correct. The warning fatal ist extreme and depending on the amount and source of water. There where heavy campains pushing formular in countries without educating people what happens when you mix even borderline Clean water with nutrients. Even borderline safe amounts of any bacteria will grow exponentially. The important Info that the breasts milk produktion adapts to the Babys needs because of biochemical feedback is very often missing. Using Formular is a process that requires some careful education. Those "facts" on bp are often missing facts....

I make a point to take an abandoned one from the parking lot into the store with me. Many of them are left near the front by the handicapped spots because there are no cart returns close enough for disabled people, which I think is understandable. Most people walk right by them and get one inside.

This infuriates me. I use handicapped parking quite a bit, And it is really difficult that here are no cart returns near the parking. Most of the time it is actually towards the end of the row, or down 2 - 3 rows. I guess they think we park there for fun. If you want my parking - take my pain

Unfortunately this has developed into a two tier system as usual. We call it the "posh push" and it's most often encountered at expensive supermarkets like Waitrose and Sainsbury's. For a lot of the shoppers in these supermarkets, £1 is just not an amount of money that they care about. It makes the job of rounding up these trolleys even more difficult, and the workers are generally not permitted to keep the coins that they find.

That taking a shopping cart is theft - even if your homeless. A real life situation right now in my area is locals complaining the local Fred Meyer doesn't have any carts. Using medicated nose spray, like Afrin brand or others like it, also can stop a bad nosebleed! The medicine quickly shrinks swollen blood vessels and tissue in the nose, which is how it stops bleeding (and also how it works to make you breathe easier!)

Do not leave a tampon inserted into your nostril for any length of time. The sideways pressure on the blood vessels acts like a tourniquet. Whilst this does slow or stop the bleeding, which probably seems like a good idea at the time, you run the risk of the tissues in your nose literally dying from lack of oxygen.

My OCD doesn't have a thing to do with being clean. Yes, I like a clean house but I LOVE clean hands. I also have to do things in certain sets of numbers. It's about routine and the comfort it gives me. Knowing that I have checked the door 6 times I can fall asleep easier. Knowing that I have counted to 210 while brushing my teeth means I have cleaner, healthier teeth and gums. If I get side tracked I have to start over. And I'm a perfectionist. If I can't do something 100% correct, I simply won't do it. That might mean my fridge is dirty because I ran out of trash bags and need to go to the store before cleaning it. It might mean that my laundry is piled up because I don't want to fold it and carry it upstairs to put it away. And ironically, I have dyscalculia (numbers dyslexia) but I still count everything!!

He had OCD (diagnosed at 6) but I never put that together with his speech delay, which mum always said 'it wasn't that he didn't know the words, he wanted to use them perfectly before he started' so he only started speaking in sentences, not individual words.

I've read the stories of various people, one guy complained that his wife can spend an hour washing hands, using cleaning cleaning chemistry for clothes or dishes. Another girl mentioned that in childhood she had trouble sleeping because she could spend two hours trying to arrange the blanket perfectly. A guy I knew personally just felt forced to repeat the words he mispronounced.

Everyone has a weird quirk or more, but that in no way makes one OCD about it. For OCD, those quirks need to fall under the definition of OCD. Unless you are completely Obsessed with an action (because quirk doesn't give a true OCD action enough justice), and/or you cannot control the Compulsion of the action, then you just aren't taking responsibility for your own quirkiness. Example, being a neat freak is much more likely to be a weird quirk. If you have actions you can't control, such as flipping a light switch on/off X times EVERY time you leave/enter a room, that is OCD behavior. If you haven't been diagnosed with OCD, and/or need therapy for an action, it's most likely a quirk, not OCD behavior.

My ex's mom would talk about her having OCD because she likes to clean and have a clean and organized house. She absolutely does not have the compulsion side so she's just neurotic. She's got issues but ones she won't admit to because they're not as popular to have or benign to others.

It's a COMPULSION, hence Obsessive COMPULSIVE Disorder. You can have a COMPULSION for ANYTHING. One person I knew couldn't do anything unless she took her exactly 5 bracelets on and off exactly 5 times. That was just one of the things. She also couldn't leave her house unless she'd checked her stove, oven, iron (even if she didn't use it), windows and all doors exactly 3 times. Her house was a mess, FYI.

There's nothing "quirky" about it and when someone says "oh, everyone is a little OCD"...if they only knew. It's in control, and it comes out at the weirdest times (and ways). When I started getting help for my anxiety I learned that my OCD was actually a symptom of a bigger problem: I have been living with undiagnosed and untreated bipolar disorder. Therapy and mood stabilizers are doing wonders for me. I've got a long way to go, you don't get over OCD quickly, or perhaps at all. I am getting better, though.

I have mild OCD. For me, things need to be symmetrical (balanced) and/or in even numbers. I count everything; how many step I'm taking, or stairs I'm climbing. Decor must have both sides with the same number of pieces (can be 3 on each side, but I prefer 4). It all depends on the person. I'm lucky: my OCD doesn't require meds or therapy or specialist care. Others aren't as lucky

I use vinegar as fabric softener for all loads. Keeps smells out of clothes and especially out of front loading washers. Also, helps get soap buildup out of clothes.

The only way our brains can be "cleaned" is when we're asleep. The lymphatic system doesn't reach the brain so when we're asleep, the brain shrinks and cerebral spinal fluid is released and flows through the brain cleaning out toxins, which funnel into the lymphatic system. Sleep is so important when it comes to being "clear headed".

For 3 months after shoulder surgery, no more than 3 to 4 not solid hours of sleep. Sleep sitting up. Sleep in a sling for a month. Then you can never get the pillows right. Add difficulty with your CPAP because what you’ve been using doesn’t work with sitting up. Gotta get a new one. I was practically a zombie with very poor short term memory and cognitive was c**p. . Finally, at the end of 3 months and can live with how much lower I can sleep now. Only 2 pillows needed and the correct CPAP, the first time it was 8 solid hits was amazing. My brain is coming back!

That may be correlation not causation though. For example, being awake longer means you're likely feeling hungry and thirsty more and because you're awake you act on it. Can't have a midnight (or 3am) snack if you're asleep.

I may get downvoted for this… but i unsubscribe from video channels that make a video in anything other than metric system and kg and Celsius or if they do, they don’t mention the equivalent in captions so the rest of the planet can understand… same with money… you expect the whole wide world to watch you, but you don’t bother to put at least Euro and Pounds or Canadian dollars when you mention how many dollars a product was, as a channel that does product reviews as a theme… no matter if is clothes hauls, game purchase, cooking recipes and so on and on

Can understand on the metric part but currency rates fluctuate literally every second, so it's usually pointless to put a conversion in - it'll be slightly wrong and may be very wrong if the video is watched a long time afterwards. I remember €1 being consistently around US$1.50. Now it's about US$1.10. Those will likely be very different in a few years time.

Had a laugh with my doctor during one of phone appointments (we've been doing those since Covid). He asked how much I weighed, I told him and converted it on his charts in kgs instead of pounds. I reminded him that back in the early 80s I worked at Noranda Mines in Toronto and invoiced metals, and that the correct conversion rate is 2.20462. This was forty years ago and that number is stuck in my head still.

I can use both imperial and metric. If I'm putting up a shelf it may be 16 inches below another or 40 cm, whichever fits best. Similar with cooking, I have digital scales which measure in both. The only I can't use is 'cups', much to imprecise for cooking. How can you make decent pastry or bread without measuring properly?

What? You can have pain from inflamed sinuses even if you don’t have active infection (clear snot). Migraines are a separate entity caused by many things like weather, etc.

Yep. I get both. Sinus headaches actually hurt. Feels like I’ve been smacked in the face sometimes. With migraines I get the flashing lights aura, a fuzzy blind spot in the centre of my vision, the wooziness and nausea, but no actual headache pain. But everyone is different I guess

I also get barometric pressure migraines. They are not the same as sinus headaches. And, yes, you can get sinus headaches without green snot. If you have a what feels like a sinus headache, gently tip your head forward. If it feels like your sinuses are going to explode, then it's probably a sinus headache. If it makes no difference, it's looking more likely it's a migraine.

Somewhat disagree. OP seems to be saying that with no 'green snot' it is not a sinus infection. I have narrow sinuses and have struggled with sinus infections most of my life. Only ONCE - one single time - can I recall having slightly green snot. It was almost always clear or white-ish. But the near immediate relief I got when I would finally get antibiotics was huge. Usually within 2 or 3 hours I could tell it was helping and by the second day much better. I have had doctors confirm that not everybody gets the green mucus. == If you have read this far and suffer similarly - what helped me immensely is a daily routing of neti pot (saline sinus rinse) and Flonase. I used to get 2-3 sinus infections a year. I've now had one or two in the past 10 years. With all the stuff I am reading about antibiotics and gut health / other issues I wish I knew that in my 20s instead of having an ENT tell me that in my 50s.

It's actually deeper than just not seeing the "quiet redaction". There is a known psychological "bug" in humans where what we hear first is more firmly entrenched. So even if we see that something is dis-proven we don't tend to remember that fact. I'm not talking about cognitive biases like the backfire effect (https://effectiviology.com/backfire-effect-facts-dont-change-minds/) that's actively rejecting something that would alter your worldview. It’s so easy to be what really amounts to being brainwashed. Yes, Pandas are going to argue and downvote me. Yes, I was in a Christian cult until one day I quietly ( don’t tell anyone you are doing this. You have to question completely on your own to get your own answers)! looked around and started questioning the reality of the whole thing. Bit by bit until I “ woke up”. Brainwashing is really an insidious form of hypnosis. Resistant to what you hear, at first. But then if you hear it enough times, it insidiously sinks in. Then you start being surrounded by the people who are constantly parroting at you what was insidious, but it’s worked it’s way in, more and more that’s all you’re surrounded with and voila! Brainwashed and you didn’t even realize it. When you do start to question and you want out, realize it’s quite likely to cost you. Believe me, the cost was worth it. LISTEN! Think. Evaluate. Question, question, question. Never accept canned answers.

That is absolutely not true. Drawing too much current on a circuit is where the danger comes in. No power strip with two heaters plugged in and in use is more dangerous than daisy chaining power strips and plugging in multiple things that are used one at a time or are extremely low current draw. What IS true is that adding more plug in spots does not magically increase the safe current draw on that circuit.

I've had a couple plugs burn out and I must say they never smelled like fish. They had a distinctive burned smell. One of them shorted and it immediately smelled of ozone. Once that faded it smelled like burned plastic.

On the other hand, one disgruntled person put fish pieces inside their enemy's curtain rails as revenge. A fishy smell does not automatically mean an electrical problem, but it can.

I can confirm this! I was building an EDM (Electronic Drilling Machine) kit once, and I had to convert some of the electronic innards from 110V (Original design from America), to 240V (My local power in Australia). I got some stuff wrong while doing so, and found I'd accidentally built a fishy smelling smoke machine instead. So after a long bike ride with the windows left open, I had fish & chips for dinner to try and cover up the smell ;-) (I dunno why, I'm the only idiot who lives there!)

If you have aluminum wiring instead of copper, better touch every wall outlet, switch, and ceiling light every month to see if it is warm. The aluminum expands and contracts as current passes through it. That causes screw terminals on outlets and switches to work loose. A loose connection causes arcing and fires.

also do not use extension cords whilst rolled up, it creates an induction coil and starts fire.

    Janice Vandelay
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

While this is true it actually has nothing to do with induction, the problem is that extension cords can get very warm when a heavy load is plugged into them and having them all coiled up reduces the surface area for them to cool. This is more likely to be a problem with cheap extension cords that can't carry as much load to begin with, and of course it depends on what or how many things you have plugged into it.

It doesn’t feel good to breathe at all, I’ve never felt that kind of pain in my lungs before or since 😅 DONT MIX CLEANERS. (I’m now aware this was stupid so please don’t shame me!)

Also don't use bleach on cat toilets, as cat urine has high amounts of amonia as well. Depending on the ratio bleach and chlorine also can create Hydrazine - a liquid, self igniting rocket fuel

Bleach does not kill mold, it merely whitens it, and can and does send the spores airborne. Use vinegar (double-strength) to kill mold. (any mold specialist will tell you this). Bleach whitens, but overall is s**t for the environment, and toxic. Local councils do now allow cleaners sent to homes to use bleach anymore, because it is a health danger.

Entire family's have died in their sleep after moving coal burning BBQs etc inside when it's extremely cold. When I was having my extension put in I was outside chasing electrical conduit into the walls, started becoming confused and getting a headache. Went back inside for a bit and once back to normal realised the boiler vent was filling up the shell of the building (no doors or windows but a roof) with carbon monoxide. Turned the boiler off and vented with a fan when I was working after that.

And it is HUGELY a "YMMV" kind of thing. Even with the same mom. My two daughters were home birthed with a midwife. It went well. We were poor and it was cheaper and we were blissfully ignorant of how wrong it can go. (But there was a requirement we were 15 minute drive from the hospital). --- BUT... Both of my daughters have had serious complications giving birth. My oldest has four kids. First two births were pretty routine. Third birth had complications and she likely would have died if she was doing the home birth thing her mom did. Fourth birth also had serious problems (but different) and they told her she should not have any more kids. During the pregnancy everything was fine. There was no warning sign(s) they were going to be difficult births.

The anatomy for giving birth didn't scale with the increase of our head size during evolution, that's why baby heads are soft and they leave the womb in an earlier stage than other animals do. Without those adjustments it would be even more lethal to give birth

I know it can be extremely dangerous but I'm afraid of looking into all of the things that can go wrong because I would end up panicking about it. I am currently pregnant with twins and I am very afraid of what it's going to be like, but what can I do but try to find a good doctor and hope for the best? I know I may end up having a c section, and that scares me too because I will have to be awake and know that they're cutting me open. I already know my mind will be messing with me even if I can't feel it. Women don't die in childbirth like they used to, but I know it's still possible, my mom almost died with an exceptionally big baby. I just want to know enough that will allow me to make the best possible decisions if needed, otherwise knowing all of the horrors won't help my peace of mind. Also the aggression and judgement in this one is absolutely unnecessary.

Scaremongering much?!? Birth CAN be dangerous but generally it’s not if women , their pregnancy and birth support people and their partners are aware of how it all works what the body is made to do during the birth and most importantly if the natural process is not interrupted but supported. Which current medical approach ruins for most women. Of course there are cases when complications happen and medical intervention is life saving but these are actually rare and most issues people tak about come from over medicalised approach to birth (synthetic hormones, too many examination, Speedo g up labour because we’re on a conveyor belt, not giving enough time and space for the birth to unfold on its own and many many more£. Future parents have so much power to make the birth m if j less stressful and dangerous than the scenarios were being fed these days by the media and I feel genuinely sorry for so many people that got failed by the system and had terrible experience.

No. Perinatal mortality was just so ridiculously high in the not so distant past. It is a natural process. Nature is f*****g scary and cruel. An obstructed childbirth for example used to mean a horrible death from infection or the uterus rupturing. I agree with you that there is much to be done to make the process less stressful. Sometimes the psychological wellbeing of specially mothers is disregarded. But really, childbirth without medical care was a disaster. Without medical intervention both my children and probably my wife would be dead.

This one is complicated by the fact that sometimes what's considered pseudoscience ends up being accepted science. Examples: the connection between intestinal bacteria and health, plate tectonics, germs causing disease, a spherical earth, and the heliocentric model of the solar system.

I would define pseudoscience as baseless claims made for an ulterior motive. The examples you cite would not fall under that definition.

An easy way to spot the difference is that pseudoscience starts with an assumption and then tries to prove the assumption correct while ignoring evidence to the contrary. Actual science begins with a theory and then studies facts and data to see if it can be proven to be incorrect. If the theory stands up for long enough, it eventually becomes more or less accepted as fact.

The word "pseudoscience" is, in and of itself, disingenuous. It's not "fake science". It's not science at all, by any metric. It's as ridiculous a term as "alternative facts". That's not how any of this works.

“Babies Below 6 Months Shouldn’t Drink Water”: 50 Facts That Really Should Be Common Knowledge A cat bite that pierces the skin is a serious event (because of the type of bacteria present) and needs prompt medical attention. If you get water in your lungs for whatever reason, seek medical advice as it can dissolve the surfactant on your alveoli and cause what's known as "second drowning" up to a day or so later. Don't hyperventilate before diving underwater (to increase your time underwater) because it can cause "shallow water blackout" when the partial pressure of oxygen drops below the threshold for consciousness before the CO2 concentration gets above the threshold that makes you feel the need to breathe.

My son got this a few years ago when he was 13. Put him in the hospital for an entire week. That was after 3 weeks of over 101 temp. Tylenol would bring it down a few hours but it would go back up. Doc kept putting him on random things til I said screw this and took him to the children's hospital in Huntsville. They admitted him immediately.

Cat bites that pierce the skin do not always cause infection. If you have pain, redness, and swelling at the site then it’s time to talk to a doctor. This is true for dogs or any other animal. They all have bacteria in their mouths that can cause issues.

Any bite from any animal is likely enough to cause infection that you should see a doctor immediately.

Well, a cat bite is a POTENTIALLY serious event. Clean the wound and get on with your life unless you see signs of infection setting in. I would never run to the ER just because I got bit. Source: The multiple times over the years I have had a cat bite and draw blood before I ever knew the infection thing was a concern. I also usually didn't even bother washing the wound. I am not recommending that part. That was ignorance. But I'd brush it off same as a blackberry scratch or some other minor wound.

A friend of mine judges at cat shows. His doctor has prescribed him some antibiotics 'just in case' that he can use at his own discretion if he gets bitten. My friend is not the sort to use medicines lightly, but he takes the potential danger from a cat bite very seriously.

Secondary drowning, not second. And there are times when it is appropriate for a diver to hyperventilate. Case in point - the whale trainer who kept being dragged underwater by a whale. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOIKvpAUYTY

Thoroughly washing the bitten area with soap and hot water immediately reduces your risk ( plus making it bleed, then rewashing) and being pedantic, it's *secondary* drowning.

Had to do this the other night at a house my gf is housesitting so she could get some sleep. Sodding thing was a different design to the others and not obvious as to how to open it, especially as it was on a 10ft ceiling. Eventually found it by videoing it from all angles and some judicious googling. Once I figured out it was mains powered, it also took me a while to find the breaker to turn off the power before removing it to change the backup battery. I'm not doing that again without a better ladder!!!

Also, that it's okay to have different opinions, and it's important to know the difference between an opinion and fact, even if not explicitly stated. If someone says "The Beatles are overrated", that's fine. It's not a personal attack against all Beatles lovers. They're just expressing their personal opinion, and that's valid. I don't mind roundabouts, the concept is pretty simple. But yeah the amount of drivers who come to a complete stop at a roundabout... even when no one else is on the roundabout. ARGH! or the people who enter them when the exit is blocked, so all they do is block the roundabout so no one else can use it.

Related: Spending money as a business expense is only saving you money on taxes if you had to spend the money anyway. It is ALWAYS a net loss if you are spending the money solely for the tax write off. And yeah, that should be obvious. But I have a relative wasting money traveling to conventions for their current MLM claiming they 'need the tax write off'. (face palm)

If that business expense is to another tax entity you control, it can lower the payer's taxable income while possibly being taxed at a lower rate by the payee. For example, I could set up a trust for my kids and have that trust own a building or equipment. My business can then lease that equipment from the trust. The income for the trust will likely be lower than the business. So the tax paid on that money will be lower for the trust than it would be for the business had that expense not been recorded.

In the United States, going into a higher tax bracket never leaves you with less money (absent weird edge cases of being eligible for some deductions and then not or s**t like that. But not the tax brackets themselves). The first chunk of money you make is taxed at one tax bracket. The next chunk of money is taxed at the next. But it doesn't make the first chunk of money be taxed higher. So, if you make $182,100, you are in the 24% tax bracket. And if you make $182,101, you are in the 32% tax bracket. But only one dollar of your money is in the 32% tax bracket

Kid: Dad, explain taxes. Dad: You pay taxes to the government on money you earn at a job. The government knows how much you made and how much in taxes you owe, but requires you to calculate it yourself. If you're wrong you go to jail. Kid: WTF? The U.S. tax system is as thick as a New York phonebook (remember those?). This benefits tax attorneys, tax preparers, associated tax "assistance" companies, the government, etc. It does nothing for the actual taxpayer except encourage cheating (mostly by the wealthy) and a general hatred of the month of April.

Not sure it is anything to do with "mass". The rule is simple: if it can be counted then it is "fewer" otherwise it is "less". Pour less liquid, pour fewer than 10cls of liquid, have less money, have fewer dollar bills in my pocket, there are fewer trees there is less wood, etc. Basically if you can use a number with it then it is "fewer" if you can't then it is "less".

For people learning English, one good trick for uncountable nouns (luggage, information, etc.) is to use the "milk" trick. Students seem to understand that "some milk, a lot of milk" but not "fewer milk" intuitively, whereas "luggage/baggage" can mess them up. So...feel free to use this for less vs. fewer.

Before going away to college their mothers or a maid would have done their laundry. Once they get to college and live alone for the first time they suddenly find out that laundry does not magically do itself. Same with many supposedly basic life skills. And also applies to moving away from home for the first time, not just going to college.

I need some information. I live in a country were automatic cars are not the norm. When we park, we always, but always engage the handbrake. If we don't the car could roll away. Is there some mechanism whereby automatic cars don't roll?

    Craig Bruce

2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Neither automatic nor manual cars should roll when left in gear. The handbrake is intended as an extra layer of protection incase your transmission fails or you don’t put it in gear properly. When you leave a car in gear (a forward gear when pointing uphill and reverse for downhill) the transmission should lock the wheels to prevent them rolling. Same as leaving an auto in P or park. If the transmission works the car won’t move. I have an auto but owned mostly manuals. I rarely used the handbrake when parking unless parking on a steep slope. When level, even without gears or handbrake the car shouldn’t move without some ‘assistance’. Don’t recommend leaving a car out of gear when parked ever, handbrake is an extra safety measure

Handbrakes are generally unnecessary in vehicles with an automatic transmission. They are extremely necessary in vehicles with a manual transmission. Engaging the emergency brake in an automatic frequently merely causes the engaged brakes (generally the rear) to wear faster - especially because it is easy to leave the emergency brake partially engaged. My father was a mechanic in a region with very steep hills, and saw so much damage to vehicles from partially engaged emergency brakes to either the engine (imagine what happens when you drive with the brake pedal partly depressed all the time) or the rear brakes failing because they wore out. That being said, he didn't see the cars which had accidents because the emergency brake wasn't used when it should have - there usually wasn't enough of those cars left for them to be fixed.

Wrong, just leave the manual car in gear and it's the same as having your automatic in P. Handbreaks are very necessary when parking on steep streets. On flat surfaces not so much.

The most common cause of condom breakage is being oversized (the loose latex folds over on itself and the friction of latex against latex causes it to break). A standard condom can accommodate a volume of 2 liters. Roughly the same size as a newborn baby. Something which would definitely require a trip to the hospital if inserted into any orifice. And yet, the bestselling condoms are the larger "magnum" size.

So true. When you use condoms absolutely perfectly (follow the exact instructions perfectly), there's a 2% chance of pregnancy in a year. But with typical use (because a lot of people aren't that careful with following the instructions), there's a 13% chance of pregnancy in a year. That is a lot!

Winter tyres are a different compound of rubber that will maintain grip in lower temperatures. Tyres have a working window of temperatures. Tyres for driving on snow and ice often have metal studs in them, which is great in the snow, but offer less grip on tarmac.

When you turn you should land in the lane you started from, not change lanes during the turn. If you turn right from the rightmost lane, land in the rightmost lane and then change lanes after the turn is complete with a blinker. 4 way stops could move quicker if we could trust each other enough to take turns at the same time. Edit: not talking about laws or rules talking about the proper way to drive most of the time for courtesy and safety sake. I don't care about your local legislation

If you’re making a left hand turn it’s the same thing keep in your lane, and then move over if you want/ need to. But make sure there’s no one behind who has just turned right and therefore is pretty close to you. Stop signs, first one to get there has right of way. If there are 3 to 4 of you at the same time, first there, right if way and then everyone takes turns starting from the lane to the right of them all the way around. Makes for some organization. At least for where I live.

kitchen knives do not go in the dishwasher the cutting edge on a knife is pretty much down to what is going on at a microscopic level. dish detergent has a bit of grit in it. without a better way to put it, it “sandblasts” the food off of your plate. that grit destroys the edge on a knife. also, the temperature in the dishwasher can alter the heat treat on some metals. i dunno how much the average user would notice this though.

I think "kitchen knives do not go in the dishwasher" should be "there's a disadvantage to kitchen knives going in the dishwasher". Because it all depends on what is important to you: if you care about sharp knives, you shouldn't put them in the dishwasher, but if you care more about convenience than about your knives going a bit duller, you can totally put them in the dishwasher.

If you go fast enough to just go through at shift to red without being red, and you succeed in doing that every intersection, you may safe a significant amount of time. But high average speed, you only really can reach on the Autobahn, just by never slowing down unless needed. Within a city, I'd not even try in a car - way too dangerous - but if, if even, with a motorcycle. That, at least, poses a lot less of a danger to others, plus it's usually quicker and you can get away with a lot more than in a car.

Our mail gateway also rewrites links in emails so it passes through their scanner. A lot of it comes down to training staff. We get a lot of cases asking if an email they get is legit or not. Sometimes we can’t tell so the advise we give is that if you are unsure about an email, delete it without opening any attachments.

I doubt that this would be the first attempt to resolve this. The obvious solution, I assume, has failed prior to seeking medical help, ... but if not, do ... that. Also, this leaves out a lot. A 4...5 hour boner can result from various reasons, and not all of them can kill you. Some can, sure.

For the record, this is for a spontaneous, shall we say 'unencouraged(?)' erection. Not the kind that you have because it's a bank holiday weekend, and you're in your 20's, and dating a sex maniac that won't let you finish yet because she's loved edging you since she made you pass out from the most explosive orgasm as a reward for buying her that jade frog figurine she wanted, and now its 10am and you've been at it since after dinner, and your not sure if want to finish or just dunk your entire member in a bowel of ice.... They are 2 different things.

I don’t know how to put this, but to be blunt about it, if your playing bouncy bouncy like in certain movie genres, if not careful about coming back down, a penis can actually break😖 DO NOT delay getting to the emergency room. Don’t be embarrassed. We do see this. The only thing we are concerned about is fixing it. And you are going to need pain meds big time. Means surgery and a stay for a few days because we have to make sure normal circulation is maintained and not going blue/ purple. That’s call the surgeon time. Get to emergency or it may never work right again!

Depends on where you grew up. In upstate NY (where I grew up) a siren was most usually a call for the local volunteer fire department. In IN (where my wife grew up) is was tornado. I had a co-worker originally from the middle east that didn't have either of these and thought they were air raid sirens.

I have a drunken squirrel's sense of orientation. It's always been like this and though I often tried to train it, it doesn't get any better. Of course I know my neighborhood/my city but in unfamiliar places I'm lost pretty quickly. For me navigation apps are a blessing.

I'm actually pretty good at navigating places I don't know when I'm outside, but I am hopeless inside buildings. I grew up with paper maps, so I'm not entirely dependant on technology! That said, I will often put the satnav on for journeys I know very well, simply because it gives me traffic information.

This used to be a more common skill. I was touring through Amsterdam recently with some - considerably younger - friends, who were impressed by the fact that I found my way back in spite of an empty phone. I had gone there one way, so I remembered, of course, but they said they would have gotten lost immediately, because in the age of navigation, they simply did not pay attention where they were going.

I often don’t go by landmarks and am well versed in N/S/E/W. So many people aren’t. It’s been a great help when I’m lost. Can drive people nuts though, if I’m asking for directions. If I’m on this certain street, are you located north or south of it?

College degrees are becoming less and less helpful, because students are doing the bare minimum to get through. The value isn’t in the piece of paper, but the accumulation of knowledge expected from it. I see tons of kids with pieces of paper, but they don’t understand anything about their own major or the world around them. Use college as an opportunity to learn and grow. Join clubs. Talk to professors. Take internships. Learn how to apply what you’re learning, and you’ll go far.

True for vocational degrees. However the point of any degree is to prove that you have the mental ability and skills to research a particular subject to a high standard - something that can be applied to any job requiring information analysis and making the most informed decisions.

They're very rare. Cash drawers have dedicated places for 1c, 5c, 10c, and 25c, but not for 50c. Similarly, they have slots for $1, 5$, 10$, and $20 but nothing else. Other bills like $50 and $100 are "too big" (even though many things cost that these days) and $2 just aren't used.

In Europe some countries use the 1 and 2 eurocent coins and others don't. When playing cash in France for instance, you pay the exact price, while in the Netherlands you pay 50 cents for anything between 48 and 52 cents. So most Dutch children don't know these coins anymore, although they're still legal currency.

I think a lot of people don't realize that you are indeed responsible for paying your own income taxes. Most people never have to worry about it because usually employers take care of it automatically but you see it all the time when people have a bunch of income that isn't taxed automatically, things like investments or independent contractor work. And then they smacked by a bill from Uncle Sam and they're screwed.

If you’re a contractor using a Basil.so or Quickbooks, they should auto-issue a 1099. Usually if it’s at least $600 or more. If you transact without a tool and are paid directly by a client, you will need to collect and keep a record of all your 1099s.

Well, in Canada, we now have a number of what are very prominent businesses leaving the country. The general population (as in not a large company that needs large supplies) will shortly not be able to buy Kleenex brand tissues or anything else from that company. Won’t be on the shelves. That company is outa here. Another very large frozen food company has left. More will leave. Why? Can’t compete with the grocery conglomerate’s flooding the market with their own brands. Where I shop it “President’s Choice”. The only brand of frozen fruit you can buy. They’re working on the veges. It’s only a matter of time because their doing the same thing with almost everything sold in a grocery store. I don’t like PC tissues, but it’s pretty much taken over. Pretty soon Royale won’t be available. Practically single handed taking down the competition and that will be all you can buy in their stores. Not good for the economy. But hey! Many people don’t know how to independently determine right from wrong. People who believe morality comes from religion usually fall into this category. Edit: All you “golden rulers” fall into this category too. To assume everyone else is exactly equal to you is reductive. What you want isn’t the same as what should happen. If a mother does not have enough food to keep both her and her child alive, is it morally correct to kill the child? Under the golden rule, no. This kills both people. Edit 2: The purpose of all human effort is to make life more comfortable for ourselves and our progeny. I believe this to be the basis of morality. The subjectivity of morality comes from who you choose to include in your group, whether that’s all of humanity or just yourself. The more intelligent you are, the easier it is to include more people within your group.

Agreed with 1, 2, 3. However 4 is incorrect. Equal before the law, and equal rights. Equality is not about capabilities or powers or skills. It's about whether you should be treated the same by the law. 5 is reductive or straw manning the abortion debate. The correct answer is the state should provide for her. But I can already tell the author is an atheist libertarian white male from the first four points. 6. (Edit 2) is Randian Objectivism. Nope, that's not the purpose. The purpose is to celebrate life. The basis of morality is not private property, as you are alluding here Mr Galt. The actual basis of morality is human equality; that all humans have equal dignity and a right to be treated with fairness and support.

This is full of mistakes. "Subjectivity of morality come from who you choose" - at best, you can chose criteria if there isn't enough knowledge determining it anyway, and then see who qualifies, who doesn't. There is no choice, there is just the acceptance of knowledge, or, more so, the lack thereof. There are a lot of equivalencies that are the only available base for a lot of these questions about what to rightfully assume. But, given today's usual habits and today's knowledge, just random behaviour can't be much worse, likely is better anyway. "All of humanity" is mentioned here as if that was what maxes out the inclusion in the morally relevant group, but if anything, that is the absolute, bare, minimum. Below of that, there is nothing that can call itself "ethics" or "morals".

Not likely to be dangerous unless he reaches a position of power/authority (such as law enforcement or politics).
