The narrator of Lawn Boy appears to be a rather troubled soul. But the bare facts are, many of us experimented sexually with our peers at early ages, not really understanding what we were doing. I don't think that's healthy; I think it's traumatic, but that encounter could very well be the explanation for the protagonist's troubled thoughts now. The man appears to remember that encounter and then say that he finds that his partner-in-crime grew up into a very attractive man. That's the only bit shown where he outright states he's attracted to someone, a man his own age. Having only read the passages in the article, I'm not going to pull judgment on if it's "pedophilic" or if it's a troubled protagonist with a traumatic past that he's mentally projecting on the world around him. Either way, it's not a children's book. And I cannot imagine it could be worse than "the End of Alice" or "Lolita."

Two dudes kissing! Oh no! I saw more graphic heterosexual displays than that on the beach or in hotel parking lots when I was a kid. Their genitals are covered. As to the bondage gear... kids have been seeing rock stars in leather clothes forever. Both of those dudes are more covered than a man in a Speedo on the beach. They don't know what bondage fetish is. They're going to see two adults kissing; that's it. Unless you live in Russia or Kenya, it's pretty hard to raise your kid without them ever seeing two men kiss each other somewhere unless you never go outside. And there's nothing wrong with normalizing mastectomy scars. Breast cancer is on the rise. A child is going to read that and think "cool, that person looks like Mommy!"

I was referring to the men, and the fact that the author intentionally put it in a kids book doesn’t seem weird to you? I understand if it was in public, that would be different because it’s not directed at kids. But this is. Intentionally showing this to kids is messed up.

I watched kid's movies with a man and woman kissing, but no one complained about that. Why is that okay but not the other? You're going to confuse the kids who were born gay.

What agenda? Prevent youth suicide? It's not a bad thing for children to know about homosexuality and gender diversity. Inevitably, one of their peers is going to have two mommies or two daddies. All research shows that you're born gay or straight or trans or cis. Regardless of if they see something in a book, the kid is going to feel what they're going to feel. I've known lesbians exist for as long as I can remember; I'm still straight. I've always known trans people exist; I'm still cis. The kids who suffer are the ones that have those feelings but don't understand what they mean or that others feel the same way. Better that they know what it means and have acceptance and support as they figure themselves out. Nobody WANTS to turn a kid queer. Why put them into a life where they're going to be hated? But if they are queer, they deserve acceptance and support.

I shouldn’t have engaged in an argument. While I wholeheartedly believe what I said, I shouldn’t have voiced what I believe here. (I guess I forgot how sensitive y’all were). So, I’m sorry.

I mean, I don’t really care, until you involve the innocent children. They shouldn’t have to worry about weather or not they want to have sex with a man or a woman later on. When you’re an adult, that’s your decision and I don’t really care what you do, but kids are impressionable, kids don’t have the mental capacity to think that critically. That decision should only happen when they’re mature enough to actually have sex.

So you never had a crush as a child?

It couldn't possibly be homophobes and transphobes pretending to be something they're not. I'm sure it's the few honest gays out there who aren't out to traumatize children. I'm a multiple CSA survivor. Each of my abusers was a straight man. And I grew up around plenty of queer folks. I actually spend time with queer people, youth and adults. Real, live people, not faceless Internet personas. I listen to their stories. I listen to their hopes and dreams and visions of what a safe, inclusive future looks like to them. Every queer adult I know is repulsed at the notion of interfering with a child. They are strictly attracted to other adults. My BFF (a gay man) only dates within five years of his own age, because he wants a partner with a maturity level to match his own, and he considers dating much younger partners to be predatory. He holds himself to much higher standards of behaviour than most straight men I know.

I’m glad you are strong enough to move on from your horrible experience

I'm in Year 4 of CPTSD therapy, actually. So I haven't quite moved on. But I am slowly getting there.
