We humans spend lots of time studying and analyzing the most essential moments of our history. After all, many of us strive to better understand our past and the world we live in. But knowledge also includes failure. While some people keep their factual mishaps low-key, others loudly declare their silly (and usually false!) opinions, making people smack their foreheads in disbelief.

Whether it's thinking that the Berlin Wall worked or that learning about WWII is bad for your mental health, some people clearly had a hard time with history, and it shows. Enter the subreddit r/FacePalm, self-described as "a gallery of inexplicable stupidity". The moderators ask the members to share screenshots of human idiocy, all for your amusement.

Bored Panda has selected the best examples of people making a complete fool of themselves and rightfully getting shamed for it online. Continue scrolling and upvote the ones you enjoyed most! And if you’re in the mood for some more stupidity of individuals both online and in real life, check out our previous posts here and here.

I love James Fell so, so very much. He's my fave historian on social media, he's always astute about whatever observations he makes about what's going on in the world, and he's very, very witty. And I love that he knows about my fave musical artist, something not a lot of people can claim (it's a Canadian band called Strange Advance, just FYI).

German here - people were forced to shut up, but nobody was forced to actively support the nazis (except kids whose parents made them go to hitler-youth.) People who supported did so because they chose to. I know as one set of my grandparents were nazis and members of the nazi party whereas the other set steered clear, hated Hitler but shut up to stay safe. All of my grandparents were being nice to ME - but one side severly messed up, supported a terror regime, supported mass murder, supported human catastrophe.

An extremely important thing that people seem to miss... someone can be "kind" and polite and at the same time support evil. Do not judge a person's morality based on how friendly they are to YOU. Judge them on how they ACT, what they DO, and what the people they support do.

Idk about "what the people they support do"... Too many people have been cancelled for supporting a brand/person that in turn supported something bad. If I supported Ellen DeGeneres at one point I am not necessarily a bad person because she is mean. I agree with the rest of your statement though.

There are some parallels to the situation in Russia -- many Russians refuse to believe that Putin is bad and comitting atrocities, they still believe he's trying to help Ukraine. A few years back, I met the Russian parents of a formerly Russian coworker, they were super nice, soft spoken, his dad and I shared a hobby and we spoke at great length about it (he spoke very good English). But despite them being well educated with a son that's now an American citizen, they refuse to believe what is happening and what Putin is doing to Ukraine and their own country, and they can't understand why the world has turned against them. It's shocking to see the power of media control and brainwashing, but we've certainly seen it in the USA as well.

US propaganda is even more successful in a way that its not that obvious, but still majority will probably say they are the greatest country (which might be true on a country level but definitely not for the average citizen) every war effort US does seem to have lot of support and then after the fact US people will laugh at us europeans for our problems not realizing that bunch of our issues are because of US meddling overseas. Cant remember how many times american have commented to me that "dont come crying for US to help you if you are so good" (when pointing any statistic that US is not #1), they dont seem to understand that we as a 5 million people country with 1300 kilometers of border with Russia obviously have to cry for help if they attack us.. its like one of US smaller side states being attacked by a country of 144 million people and then asking other states to help (with the difference that we wont be walked over but will obviously crumble under massive missile threat)

The fact that your family might love you doesn't get rid of the fact that they want hundreds of thousands of people they have never met to die (:

I barely remember life before the polio vaccine, but what I do remember is the palpable fear one felt from the adults. You could quite literally go to sleep healthy as a mule and awaken paralyzed from the neck down, including your lungs. I had several friends with different degrees of injury from polio. I'm still deathly afraid of it.

Yep. White people go into what is now Colorado, think "Yee-haw!" The tribes said, "Yeah, bad idea, this is an unusually wet cycle of weather, your crops and plans won't last." What happened? The wet cycle ended, the crops and plans flopped, and there we were.

Same in Australia. There was a lot of news about wildfires and it’s connection to climate change, while in fact it was just a question of bad policies - the Aboriginals knew about controlled burns and practiced it for a long time, to prevent worse fires. The Australian government abandoned these practices, and we all have seen the result.

That's half true- there are less control burn happening now because there is climate change, meaning conditions are not suitable for it as often. We don't want to create more of a problem by starting fires when they cannot be controlled.

This is a mere example of that new form of ideology we might have trouble with in the future : "green colonialism". Basically, white capitalists claiming they're going to handle the preservation of large wildlife zones, provided they can get rid of the people who actually managed to live there quite sustainably for centuries.

But the officials won't carry it out the same way the original inhabitants did. Not scattered small and low-intensity burns to provide a mosaic of new and old growth and bare patches for wildlife in the event of a bigger fire. Nope, that is too costly and labour intensive. So lets burn whole counties or ranges every 10 years using aerial incendiaries. No account taken of place that need a small burn every 100 years or others that need a fire every 5 years. Just a one-size fits all approach. OFFICIAL "Well that didn't work did it, so lets go back to doing nothing".

The black plague was caused by yersinia pestis - a bacteria. Bacteria are typically treated with antibiotics. Viruses are typically treated with antivirals, which are usually not specific and not very effective. Viruses are typically prevented by vaccines. Vaccines are not used against bacteria. You're welcome for this small dose of science education.

The plague didn't disappear but it reduced dramatically due to sanitisation, quarantine and a wonderful creation called antibiotics. People still get the plague today but it is easily treatable if detected early.

It didn't disappear. It literally ran it's course. It wasn't spread by humans, but by the fleas carried by rats. Covid and the Plague are two very different things. So unless you want to help Covid do the same and take a huge chunk of the worlds population with it, get f*cking vaccinated

    Pamela Blue

Well, actually, it may have started with rats, but very quickly the "bubonic" plague turned into the "pneumonic" plague, which allowed everyone who breathed to pass it on to anyone else. It was the pneumonic plague that wiped out a third of Europe's population. (Actually, it wiped out a third of the world's population. It also decimated the middle and far east as well)

I'm fairly sure they've used historical records to make a good estimation of of those who did die from the plague by using actual death records from some years before and after to calculate what a "normal" death rate should have been, in addition to official death records from those years.

There’s a myriad of scientific evidence that proves humans are poor judges of their quality of performance and abilities. Well, people believe they are smarter and more capable than they really are and often claim to know a lot when, in fact, they have very little knowledge about the subject.

A 1999 study in which David Dunning and Justin Kruger, psychology professors from Cornell University, showed how people tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities. The researchers asked participants to do four tests to assess their humor, grammar, logic, and then evaluate how well or poorly they thought they did.

The results revealed that most participants overestimated their performance, but the ones that scored in the bottom quarter were much more likely to overvalue themselves. "Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it," the researchers wrote.

As a follower of Christ, this is insane and disgusting. But sadly not shocking. Reminder: when Peter took out his sword to defend Christ, Peter got in trouble. Christ does not represent butt-hurt and insidious politicians who want to play tit for tat or force belief systems. He regularly called out oppressors and literally rioted inside a SYNAGOGUE. Vernon is the same kind of person who would have hung his so called god. I don't know who his god is. Furthermore, the point of the death of Jesus Christ is that he completed something, and he willfully offered himself. He said as much to Pilate when deciding his sentence. He doesn't need our help for justice. Our brothers and sisters do. Glad that this reverend called him out

Its sad. All big civilizations did horrible things like colonizing, slaving, murdering and raping. Look at mayans, incas, mongolians, moors... All humans are calable of horrible things. That does not excuse the horrors of colonization but we need to remember this.

India (which at the time included Pakistan and Bangladesh), Algeria and Tunisia, South Africa, and even 'white' countries weren't all white. There were plenty of indigenous people fighting for the ANZACS and the US as well as black people and a significant number of people whose families were actually sitting in American internment camps while they fought.

Mostly it's the fact that his skin tone really is *not* black - though noticeably tanned compared to the other *actually* white people in the photos. Which makes sense, because Egypt isn't the deep of Africa. It borders on the Mediterranean sea and is right next to the Arabian peninsula. Many of its people live in the North, which is about the same latitude as Israel. And Israelis are largely tanned, not black, so why should Egyptians be? This is a geography/science fail. A main predictor of indigenous skin color is latitude, and Africa is *huge* and stretches over 60 latitudes - so Africans *shouldn't* all be black. Which they aren't.

Except the plague DOES still exist. There are about 2,000 cases reported every year. On average 7 reported in the US every year. And no, there isn't a vaccine for it. But we know what causes it and if you get treatment for the bacterial infection before it develops into plague, it's 100% treatable. Because it's caused by bacteria. Covid is viral. Not the same. People are idiots.

To be fair, it hasn't ended well for *any* of the Haitians. Edit : I guess the downvoters would be happy to give up their current lifestyles to go live like a native Haitian, then.

Arguing a point as false... doesn't really "make a point", when nobody disagrees with you. Slavery has existed in almost every culture across the planet throughout history. Out of all of history and all of the planet, only the Europeans/Americans of the 17th/18th century decided to identify who is a slave based on their race. All of the other countless instances before and after and elsewhere had nothing to do with race. BUT, if you are an American, and talking about the impact of slavery on American history and current American culture... then slavery IS a race related issue, and the fact that other people in other places and other times did it a different way doesn't really matter.

To be fair, white people weren't the only ones that owned slaves during history (the first operation of the US Navy was to fight North African pirates/slavers in the mediterran) - in some places there's still slavery

White people aren't inherently evil. Black people aren't inherently victims. It is all a matter of who holds the power and how they want to keep those without power held down. So yes, "to be fair", who holds the "power" is different depending on where and when you are talking about. But for the modern ancestors of slavery in America, the Caribbean and other locations from the "new world"... this technicality doesn't change the fact that they WERE owned by white people, and the history and culture of their communities is based on that foundation.

"never hear about it" in the UK anyone that's interested has heard of Wilbur Wilberforce. The problem is that too much weight is put on his contribution and not enough on the black people that toured the UK, giving lectures, publishing books, and fighting the fight themselves (slavery never had a legal footing in the UK, which meant it couldn't be enforced)

Abraham Lincoln may have enacted the Emancipation Proclamation, but enslaved people freed themselves. It's not like slavers were just going to stop enslaving because someone told them it was wrong.

Most people who are racist, homophobic, and anti-science try to justify their horrible actions and views by twisting the text in the Bible. I highly doubt that most these bigots have even read the Bible critically. These are the same type of idiots that believe that their God planted those dinosaur skeletons to test humans when they are questioned about evolution.

Dude growing up my impression of God was poor. I read the bible, listened to the stories. And he came off as a power trippy jerk off. So he knew the snake was there, because he's omniscient. And allowed it all to go down. He basically set humanity up for failure, and still thinks he has any right to judge us for our choices or actions when he thrust us out into a malicious, uncaring world. Then he sent his son down to be tortured and killed to guilt trip humanity. Like seriously. He came off as abusive as my own abusive dad lol.

I don't understand why they are using Hitler as Putin's "mentor." The much better comparison would be to Stalin. He killed 20 million people over his lifetime, and attacked and claimed many of the postwar iron curtain countries. Putin is just like him and wants to be Stalin all over the again. He wants the "old" Russia back. I don't think Hitler even comes into the picture!

No, this is a big Nope. I live in an area the trail of tears went through - and its history that needs to be taught not swept under the rug. There's so much the schools don't always teach that they should, and what was taught on the trail of tears when I was growing up wasn't even enough - that was dependent on which school I was in what I learned. I had a very diverse upbringing due to moving around a lot so I got to learn a bunch of stuff I wouldn't have had I stayed in one spot.

A good few years ago I was in NYC for the 4th of July (from the UK). I happened to be on a dinner boat trip on the Hudson to watch the fireworks and got chatting with this lovely family from upstate. They asked in all seriousness what we (in the UK) did to celebrate independence day. They had no real idea of what was being celebrated or why, to the extent that they kept asking me more and more questions around those events. Like wide-eyed children they were amazed at those things. To be fair, my knowledge was not encyclopedic on the subject but they wanted to know more. It says a lot about the US education system, or perhaps that if you give people the oppotunity to learn they do.

Not only did it eventually come down and has been considered a cruel historical mistake since they built it, it was only part of what they called the "Todesstreifen", path of death. People were shot at and killed long before they could've climbed the wall. At least 140 have been killed in Berlin alone. It's a symbol of shame not an accomplishment.

OK my original response was a cynical jab at the church for centuries of denigrating women by any means possible. The unholy truth of all so called witch trials is that it had nothing to do with witches. It was the lame ass quest for rooting out what they saw as satanists in their midst. It had more in common with macarthyist hysteria about communism or post 9/ 11 islamic terrorism than it was about witchcraft. The thousands of innocent women who were victims of small scale persecution were collateral damage of a greater hysteria. The truth is that very few actual witches were persecuted was that we were too fkn smart for the feeble minded clergy. The old religion endured because it was hiding in plain sight , as tradition, folk tales and superstition. You just have to look at ancient parish churches in the UK. They are filled with images of the pagan past , the green man, chapels to the virgin mary built on ancient goddess sites. The very fact that the madonna is so revered in ireland reflects the pre christian matriarchal religion. My flippant reference to burning wiches was more to do with a pop culture reference than historical fact. The point being made was more of a feminist diatribe againt patriarchal, mysogonist b******t than anything else. I certainly didn't expect the spanish inquisition, but who does? ( joke )

I find it weird also to be honest. It makes sense that younger people don't have a sense for when things happened or when famous figures were alive but his style is so crazy contemporary that I'm not sure how you can ever think he was painting abstract in the 1500s when Shakespeare was rolling around.

I can understand being young and maybe not knowing art decades, and maybe thinking he was older than he was and getting them confused, but to put it in perspective, the 1500s were the *middle ages*. Life was bad. Especially for poor people. Art was not very sophisticated, most of it was religious. As a comparison, all the 'great' artists of the Renaissance were in their infancy back then, like Michelangelo and Rafael, the Renaissance came later. Art like Picasso had no place back then, his art is very modern. Same with Van Gogh-- he is only about 130 years ago-- he was alive in the time of the US wild west. You're not a moron but it is worth getting a grasp of various centuries of history and famous figures in those times. History is crazy and fascinating.

I can only speak about white people in the U.S. But our school history books are full of inaccuracies about Indigenous culture and civilization in the Americas. Then you have that manifest destiny/religious ideology of Christian white people being given dominion over the land that propagated expansion further west. How do you justify murdering and stealing land unless you can pretend to be superior. And then there's US ideology of "democracy" and capitalism which is how excuses got made to subjugate or exploit. Our world history classes rarely if ever covered Asian or African history. In my state it is required at the high school and college level to take classes about Native culture or history and it's becoming more common to have Native instructors and textbooks. My kid's school district has pretty forward thinking education goals but we talk a ton at home about the beauty and accomplishments of different civilizations and the unvarnished truth regarding colonialism.

Cannot understand this widespread British trend toward the misapplication of verb forms. You highlighted a good example of this unfortunate fad -- which is evolving in the land of Shakespeare, no less. "I was sat..." once meant somebody led you to a chair and "sat" you down.

Uh... my cousin is also around that age and our grandparents were *children* during WWII. For most young adults, it would be the great-grandparents who fought in the war. Which isn't that long ago, either, but long-enough to not have anyone in the living part of family who has any detailed memories of the war.

Indeed. In spain we dont learn about ww1-2 and our civil war/dictature until we are 16yo. By then many are already convinced fascists that believe the idiocies of the extreme right wing. Kids need to learn about those things when they start middle school, in a age appropriate manner.

Sorry, this is plainly idealistic thinking for a professor no less. it's not just about the academics of things. The practicality is a huge factor. Do you feed your neighbor if they are short in winter? Do you stockpile goods? Do you trade for items not available in your environment? If you answered yes to all of that, then it means you need to organize. When you organize, there will be a hierarchy, delegation of tasks and decision making mechanics. So where does that take us?

Hunter Gathers is a wonderful lifestyle, too bad it only supports 1 person for every 22 acres in GOOD land. Cannot do it at all in a desert, and you need a lot more in less fertile areas. Modern farming needs about 1/2 an acre for a vegetarian diet and can be created any area that has enough water. 2 acres per person if you want some meat. Going back to 'hunter gatherer' means killing 90% of the population, minimum.

Two points I want to offer: 1. If you want to be a hunter-gatherer society, you have to be prepared for a high infant mortality. It's a trade. 2. There's a common misconception based on a VERY flawed "experiment" (and I use the word loosely) that hunter gatherers only worked 20 hours a week to provide all their basic needs. The "anthropologist" who formed this "conclusion" did so after a very well-equipped camping trip that was half a step above having a picnic. One has only to study currently living hunter-gatherer groups to see that they basically spend every waking moment trying to get food, make stuff and repair stuff that's worn out. We really don't want to be hunter gatherers for a mind-staggering number of reasons.

There is very strong evidence that hunter-gatherers lived a healthier life than the original people to start agriculture. Looking at bones, the early farmers were shorter and sicker than the foragers, and this remained the case for thousands of years.

I think that agriculture was needed for humans to advance. Industrialized agriculture is our death, on the other hand.

This is it exactly. Industrialized agriculture and processed foods are bad. People talk about the decline of health in the neolithic period after agriculture. No sh1t. Farming was hard y'all, it was brutal on the body and would be for years. Running around eating meat and bones (which keeps teeth healthy such as in carnivores) was of course great for the body. Eating mushy cooked stuff and grains gave us bacteria and changed our teeth, which is a normal byproduct of evolving diets. As we evolved to not physically farm ourselves, our health improved in that way, etc. As we lead sedentary lifestyles and eat processed foods our health declines. But to say that hunter gathering was way better because there was no pollution and our bones were tougher is like saying because disinfectants can create resistant superbugs then we should stop hygiene and let everyone get sick. It's nuts and I'm amazed at the amount of people that are drinking the cool aid.
