When you think about a dystopia, there are a few things that come to mind. A desolate landscape, an oppressive government with cruel laws, and a society with sanity splitting at the seams. It’s what you imagine when you think about “The Handmaid’s Tale” or “The Hunger Games.”

However, dystopia might be closer to reality than one can imagine. Nowadays, environmental disasters and political unrest are our everyday dinner table topics. Add to that constant surveillance, biased media, and the lifestyles of the ultra-rich and you’ll find yourself living in an Orwellian nightmare.

Facebook group “Dystopian late-stage capitalism horrors repackaged as heartwarming stories” is dedicated to those moments when you really notice the absurdity of the world around you. The list below is the collection of their most recent sobering hits. Scroll down to join us in wallowing in misery.

This was Valley Springs Manor in California. The operators didn't go bankrupt, the care home was closed by the state because of multiple code violations. These two men looked after the residents for a few days and then called in the fire department and sheriff. The scandal resulted in California passing a care reform act (in 2014) to ensure it wouldn't happen again.

Before Reagan happened to California, and then to the rest of us, there were care homes covered by the state that would have taken those people in. Gotta love governmental deregulation and corporate greed.

I'm sorry but why aren't there professional bodies that stepped in to take over or relocate these vulnerable people?! Like the local government or the body that checks care homes to see they're doing the right thing etc?

There are now, thankfully. This happened in 2013-the care home was closed by the state (California) because of multiple code violations relating to health and safety, fire safety and not doing background checks on staff, so the operators basically closed and walked out. These two looked after the residents for a few days and then the sheriff and fire department got involved. The state passed an act in 2014 to prevent this happening again.

...they just outright ABANDONED those elderly people!? That's beyond messed up. It's evil, heck, without care, those elderly could have died or something. These two men are heroes, truly.

There are many countries out there that can be used as examples of real-life dystopias. Russia with its totalitarianism and the stronghold on the media, China and its personality cult, North Korea and its human rights violations—all of those are correct.

But thinking that the western world is somehow very far removed from those realities is hypocritical. We’re all slowly inching ourselves towards a reality that Cormac McCarthy would have a blast writing about.

Ok, so an idea: what about animal welfare people looking into options for fostering animals whose owners are in a situation like this, so that the people don't need to give up their pets, but they would still have a temporary home till the owner is well again

Because everyone should have access to the internet. A person's income shouldn't determine whether or not they are able to access the internet in their home. Especially now that so much of life requires you to have that access.

What if there's no library? What if the people can't afford to buy a $7.00 coffee each day? What if the person is disabled? What if the person can't afford a vehicle, and there's no public transportation? Here, at least according to the ads, the government will gift a device (phone or pad) and 5gb of WiFi a month to low-income families. Whether it works or not, I don't know.

I don't where you're at but the US has "Obama" phones and discounted Wi-Fi. My mom and I both have these phones. Otherwise we would not have phones. I still pay for WiFi for our house cuz I use a tablet. The phone is too small for my sight and sound.

In 2023 in developed countries, a basic Wi-Fi connection should be available for everyone. Nowadays (in the UK at least and where this happened I'm guessing from them using the word 'council') you can't do many things (or at least do them easily) without a Wi-Fi connection.

Take, for example, mass surveillance. Don’t tell me you’ve never had that moment where you talked about wanting to get something and then, completely unexpectantly, got an ad for it on your browser. It was creepy at first, but not it’s just a thing that happens.

Everyone that has a phone and internet is monitored both by the government that makes sure you’re in line and corporations that want to sell you a better deal. They track your location, note how long you stay for in which places, keep tabs on your communications and, often, have access to your camera and microphone. If that doesn’t sound dystopian, I’m not sure what does.

When I watch movies, if a human gets hurt, I'm like " ehh, that's sad"; but if there is an animal about to get hurt-I am on the edge of my seat, yelling at the TV, swearing and grabbing tissues. A funny, but not funny, funny story: Hubby wanted to watch " Marley & me", and I still have never seen the end of that damn movie, because I jumped up off the couch and ran down the hall crying, and shut the bedroom door and stayed there til it it was over. And I am a grown woman.I have no shame. IRL, anybody that hurts any animals should be strung up by their genitals and left there til they rot. Period.

London taxi drivers are wonderful and hope they never vanish. I visit london often and refuse to ever use Uber, always using london back cabs. They cost the same (for ages I compared the cost of my journey to what Uber would charge and they always came out to being almost the exact same one a few pennies more one time and the other a few pennies more the next) and get you from a-b but black cab drivers know london roads off by heart, know where the cut throughs are, where traffic is bad, little tips and tricks if you say you want ti go to a place, they know dropping you off at the side is easier for you then the front etc They are also all wheelchair accessible, as they have a hidden wheelchair ramp installed that pulls out and so any wheelchair user can know that they can stop any taxi and be able to travel.

Then, let’s not forget about how partisan and politicized the media is. These days it is so tough to find a news outlet that’s neutral when reporting on what’s happening around the globe. To the point that media bias is not at all a surprise, and we even have independent studies and charts about which way which news outlet is leaning.

Run these numbers from a poll in 2020. 63% of the population believes that the government has a responsibility to provide health care for all. And 66% of the Republicans say that the government does not have the responsibility to make sure all Americans have health care. It isn't just the insurance industry.

It goes back to gerrymandering. For decades both parties in charge of local and state politics have practiced this "delightful" method of ensuring party control. But since Republicans are usually voted into power at these levels, Republican candidates win. That's the main reason McConnel has stayed in office for 100 years.

I am a medical biller. I just had to do an appeal to an insurance because they denied anesthesia for an appendectomy because it wasn't "medically necessary". Yes, the healthcare system in the US sucks. I see it every day. I try and advocate and fight for our patients to get stuff covered that the insurance tries not to pay. It is ridiculous.

Majority of the "articles" on BP are like this, the only original posts are when the article says something along the lines of "we asked Panda their favorite kitchen utensil, and they didn't disappoint". Same in the UK (but probably cheaper here?). Unless you can afford an excellent pet insurance, you either wipe out your savings or .... wipe out your savings (if not, beg, borrow or sell stuff), as what else can you do but follow your heart? Some would say 'don't get a pet if you're poor', but what about if you weren't when you adopted/bought and then hit terrible times, like losing your job? My marriage broke up because I wiped out half our savings when our dog was diagnosed with Addison's Disease late in life (he was a shelter dog, so no history) and he had a very lengthy stay in the Veterinary Surgery, but had to be PTS after a month as he was too far gone. Our Pet Insurance wasn't as good as I thought. 190486_101...f55a34.jpg 190486_10150114000072063_712753_n-6538e33f55a34.jpg

Do we even need to mention the environmental disasters? Floods in California, droughts in the Midwest, islands on fire—and that’s just the US. There were heatwaves all over with record-breaking temperatures and floods in Sudan, Libya, Ghana, and way more. One just has to remember how New York looked during Canada’s wildfires earlier this year and you’ll know you we are living example of dystopia.

In the 1600's you would most likely be owned and entirely beholden to the local lord with absolutley no legal protection, nothing to look forward to except back breaking work until you die, no chance for any medical care and the likelihood that half your children would die before age 5. If you can't see the improvements in the human condition you are delusional.

Just plain ignorance and entitlement. Imagine not having a market or having to rely on yourself for survival. Maybe raise a chicken or a rabbit or grow something edible. Maybe walk or bike instead of using modern transportation. Maybe read a book and research something or discover something on your own. Maybe make something from scratch. Can you sew? Can you make a meal from simple ingredients? Go back to your iPhone and tiktok and be grateful others let you live

There’s hope though. We don’t check all the dystopian boxes just yet, at least not everywhere. One of the criteria seems to be uniformity and conforming to same expectations. And so far, we are doing alright there.

Don't agree with the theme behind this one. Academic journals have always been expensive, largely because of the limited readership. The most mainstream one's will normally be available in academic ie university libraries. More importantly, the advent of the internet has improved access to papers that would previously have never been easily available. Plus a great deal of it is free. Indeed you can read the article referenced for free here: https://www.nature.com/articles/356739a0

The difference now though is that there are other models by which scientific research can be published. But because everyone is used to the classic model of paying publishers, it is difficult to change. Everyone needs to change at the same time for it to actually happen. Paying a publisher thousands of £/€/whatever to publish work that has already cost thousands is nuts. On top of that, peer reviewers and/editorial boards are expected to do their duty for free. It is insane. I'm very selective of publishers I review for nowadays. The outcomes of publicly funded research should be available to the public for free if we want people to trust the scientific process and advance society away from folklore and conspiracy theory.

I'm a full time wheelchair user and I get my chairs paid for by a government paid scheme called wheelchair services. When I read about people in the USA either using totally the wrong type of cheap chair (which can cause all sorts of issues) or house bound as they can't afford anything it makes me so angry and sad for those people. If you require a wheelchair as you can't walk, it should be a basic human right.

As a full time wheelchair user who is lucky that they live in the UK and so get provided with the specific type of chair I require for no cost, stories like this make me angry and upset for the persons involved. If you can't stand/ walk, a wheelchair should be a basic human right and protected as such.

It's nostalgia. We're remembering a happy, easier time when we were younger and life was an open road ahead. Now we're closer to the end of our lives than the beginning, the road behind us was much more difficult than we imagined and the road ahead is an uncertain and likely painful journey. Blockbuster and pizza is about remembering happy times with absent friends and family.

All these stories of disabled people going without basic equipment are making me so angry and sad. I'm deaf and even though the top of the range Bluetooth hearing aid I got given at no cost (yes it's paid through my taxes but I mean out of pocket) to me hardly does anything for my level of deafness, I was given it regardless. Same for my wheelchair (though that does a lot as I can't even stand so without that, I'd be stuck in bed for life) it's the type that I require and made to my needs. I like visiting the USA but as a disabled person, I often thank my lucky stars I was never born there!

All in all, we’re not quite full-on dystopian just yet. We can get there very fast if we want to, though, so it’s important to note the sate we’re in even if it’s through internet lists like this one. As a wise man once said, check yourself, before you wreck yourself. And we all know that the last thing we need in this world is more wreckage.

Greed . It is called Greed. It has been the driving force of pretty much all of societies major issues over the last 8000 years or so, probably more. Greedy people take from whoever they can, in anyway they can. They then have enough wealth to have tremendous power, because they can pay (or bribe) people to put them and keep them in power, because these people are either greedy themselves, or desperate. Then they accumulate more wealth by abusing their power, and taking more and more from the struggling vast majority of their society, make laws to keep that vast majority in poverty, until the vast majority have enough, and revolt. Then, after the revolution, people vow to not let it happen again, and a couple decades or centuries goes by, but resources may become scarce, something major happens in the world, etc, and the Greedy person starts the cycle all over.

People should not buy better cheaper electric cars causing other car companies to compete. We should keep buying gas cars because Elon is a jerk. That will teach them.

You can extract economic value from forests while leaving trees standing. There is an excellent academic book called The Forest Farms of Kandi about agroforestry in Java, where 100s of outputs are harvested from within a forest in a sustainable way. But it can't be scaled up, so global capitalists wouldn't be interested.

There was research published in 2020, by a group of environmental researchers detailing about 1/3 of the tree species on the earth actually being endangered, which various scientists from about 40 or so other countries agreed is a rising problem. The loss of that many species of tree can heavily damage forest biodiversity and health, for plants and animals, as well as impact the livelihoods of many people who rely on those forests. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the publication right now, and my science news app it's not the easiest to navigate through previously read things. X/

People this age should not do this. If you have a heart attack or a stroke in the middle of the ocean (out of helicopter range), it's a death sentence (or worse) despite the fine medical facilities many cruise ships have. My wife had a stroke on our cruise this summer. Fortunately the ship wasn't at sea or at one of our stops in Greenland. It took place in a port with a major medical facility and where we spoke the local language. 100% revovery.

Not necessarily. Given the cancer and chemo. It's likely she was taking pain and/or nausea medication. Either when mixed with alcohol will increase any side affects that would impair driving ability. I mean I can drive with my pain meds, but if I require an extra dose or take my nausea meds, that's a big nope. Any alcohol is a big nope with my meds, driving or not (alcohol is a nope with my condition, too, but that's beside the point).

He was misrepresenting himself with education and license to practice law, that's fraud which is illegal in most places. He also assumed the identity of a real lawyer called Brian Mwenda Ntwiga which is also fraudulent. That is why he was arrested. Can you imagine going to a doctor paying the bill for someone you believed to be a highly trained specialist and finding out he/she was not a doctor but someone posing as one?

My dad knew of a man years ago who was such a celebrated and loved surgeon that when he came to retire the hospital and local area wanted to do a big celebration piece about him. Someone was tasked with researching his career and only then did they find out his official medical training was as a nurse! He had self taught himself everything else and yet so good that he was their top surgeon and people demanded he do their operations. He was obviously sacked but people who were due to have him do their operations didn't want the actual qualified surgeon that stepped in, they wanted this man because he was so good.

In the US, when kids take higher level classes than normal (honors, Advanced Placement, IB) they can get a "weighted GPA" where instead of 4.00 for an A you get 4.25, 4.5, or even 5.00. I can tell you as a university counselor for the US (I live in Greece), SCORES DO NOT GET YOU INTO COLLEGE. Most of the parents here believe this to be true. But universities care about who you are, and what you're doing with who you are, in a holistic way. Universities are also looking heavily at "fit", or basically, "are you one of our peeps? do you want to save the world? invent bombs? help the AI take over? hug the trees and the whales?" My guess is that he: 1) wrote a Common App personal essay that made him look like a sociopath ("LOOK AT MY ACHIEVEMENTS AND BOW DOWN") while they're supposed to actually be very, very personal and not academic, 2) wrote the extra paragraphs that colleges ask for in a way that was either very copy/pasted across all schools, or which made him look terrible.

I'm in the UK, and interview for medical school entry-we have 10 applicants for every place, and they are all generally around the same academic level, so grades don't help distinguish between candidates suitability. We now interview via MMI, where there are 10 stations with 2 examiners at each station, and these are a mix of questions and role play designed to demonstrate qualities like communication skills, empathy, problem solving, how to prioritise and time-manage, and conflict resolution. It's not something you can study for, or have a prepared answer for-its not "why do you want to be a doctor?" so it's a good way of seeing how well they think on their feet and gives a better idea of character and suitability than pure academic grades do.

Seriously? If that was the case I would be standing outside the school gates handing out the amount each child owed for them to pay it off. I'd hope they couldn't stop people coincidentally gifting them the exact amount they owed?

I went into lunch debt so many times in elementary/primary. It was always super embarrassing when they'd announce to everyone "sorry (insert my deadname) but you can't pay for that". At least I was usually able to pay it off eventually, I can't imagine how awful and embarrassing it would be for those who weren't able to pay. Society is messed up :(

My department got Kaizened a few years ago. The hospital where I work (UK NHS) decided to waste a lot of money by bringing in a management consultancy firm to streamline departments and improve efficiency. Rather than talk to the people actually doing the work and seeing what their ideas for improving the service were, a team arrived who had absolutely no idea how a laboratory operated. Their first suggestion was that to build team cohesiveness we needed a departmental motto and mission statement and we should all meet in the committee room every morning for 15 minutes to recite the mission statement and compliment each other (seriously-they said we should hold hands in a circle and say something positive about the person to your left and right, in turn). It went downhill from there.

I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. We're far too wasteful with our resources. Being frugal and careful (using stale bread for something else--duh) with what you have is good. Having to do it because you can't afford necessities is bad, but just being careful is good.

Here hours get cut and it's shifts starting at a reasonable time. And you get given a quite comfortable office job if possible. You can get leave anywhere from 36 weeks pregnant. Even dad's get a pretty good amount of paternity/family responsibility leave.

Jeezus, we have a woman due in about 8 weeks who had to give a patient chest compressions last week. I'm scared she's going to go into labor at the clinic and NOT in a hospital. But our system, man. No one can afford to take time off anymore.

Are pregnant people vampires? I'm fully on board with her not having to work that close to a due date, but I don't see a problem with what time those hours are.

Hmmm, I mean plenty of places have donation boxes (or entrance fees) to help with the upkeep of said place, how is this any different? At least it's not mandatory

I think the word tip is wrong in this case, like you said it is a donation. On the other hand, you would think that the upkeep of a local park would be paid by the taxes.

The only problem I have is the amount. As said elsewhere, this is merely a modern donation box - which have been around for as long as I've been on this planet.

Yeah it's not for tipping, it's for donating. Less prone to theft than a cash box, and more likely to get used since no one carries cash anymore.

In a society where paper money is not used as much as it once was this makes perfect sense to help out a park.

Small sticker with a QR code would have been less tacky. The link could have offered additional information on the park.... This pay box offers nothing.

Yes! You have no debt, so the lender doesn’t have any way to know how you manage your debt. So go open a credit card so we can see if you’ll be responsible with it or not. Come back in about a year to talk about that mortgage. By that time rates are so high you would qualify for a mortgage, but only for like $14000 because you owe credit card debt.
