If you're feeling down today, get ready for a shot of cuteness. Spike the Beetle is the latest pet we all want to have, and he's becoming a social media sensation for his supreme artistic abilities.
Spike, a black stag beetle, lives in Japan with his English-teaching owner. Stag beetles are popular pets in Japan, where they're known as kuwagata, and celebrated for their samurai helmet-like horns. Spike doesn't wield any katana swords with his mighty pincers, but it turns out that he's pretty good with a paintbrush, and frequently creates colorful avant garde sketches. He also happens to be a big fan of snuggling under soft blankets, and politely eating dinner at the table.

Heracross. A stag beetle is like a rhinoceros beetle and Heracross is based off of a rhinoceros beetle.
This beetle has more artistic talent than most people I know. Good for you Mr. Spike!
a lot of haters out there. Why ya'll gotta hate so hard? This beetle and it's owner are not hurting anyone... If people want to support this owner by giving money for the wee "artworks" the beetle makes, that doesn't hurt you. It's fine if you want to splurge on an expensive drink or a new toy, and it's fine if they want to buy tiny paintings painted from the jaws of a beetle. Just relax and let people enjoy things.
I never knew that beetles could be kept in captivity with any great success, good for Spike. Hes a beaut!

So adorable! Ever since I found out you could actually get beetles as pets pretty easily in Japan it's been a dream of mine. One day... one day I'll still have one. I'd be satisfied with those adorable madagascan giant cockroaches, but nobody I ever lived with has ever been ok with cockroaches around, even if they're totally different from the ones we usually consider house pests.
I used to own three, as I already mentioned. It's great if you buy at least a pair because their are social insects. I highly recommend males - slightly smaller and with little horns on the head. Those cockroaches get used to handling easily but it DOES take some time before they become tame. Beware of cockroach parasites: they are easy to get rid off but the process is no fun and eventually you'd find yourself faced with a couple of extremely angry, loudly hissing cockroaches which are surprisingly fast. :)

And the best thing is that it wouldn't fly like my devilish stick insects and the owl butterflies that are about to hatch on my banana plant. Also we've seen seals and elephants drawing masterpieces but a beetle? It's something new indeed. And for sceptic people, Spike indeed loves to draw, if he didn't like it, he would've crushed the markers in half by now.

It was hard to get through this with my entomophobia. I feel like bugs are crawling on me now. But, this was kind of cute in a way. If I ever met her MAYBE she could convince me to be in the same room as Spike. I can't promise that I wouldn't sob like the world was ending though.
