In case you weren't previously aware, the world we live in today is plagued by double standards, which most people are happy to ignore in the name of 'keeping the peace.' When Twitter users were asked by Hashtag Roundup to share some double standard examples using the hashtag #NowThatsADoubleStandard, they disturbed that peace like there was no tomorrow.

Some of them are 'classics' that we're all familiar with; men being made to feel ashamed for crying, women being called 'bitches' because of their confidence, and the debate over who, exactly, is allowed to go jogging with their top off. To save you the trouble of combing through the busy Twittersphere, we've compiled some of the best Tweets to the thread right here on Bored Panda for your viewing pleasure. Or displeasure, because, let's face it, double standards in social interactions are pretty infuriating.

Scroll down to take it all in, and let us know what you think in the comments.

It's about male enjoyment of the sex act, people still believe that every time a woman has sex with a different man her vagina stretches out a little more. And of course, if it's too stretched out, it won't feel good for the man. So obviously, as women we must remain chaste so as to please our husbands properly.

Well, in the country were I live, you can go to your family doctor and they give the birth control for free. Some other methods are not included, like the ring or the pad but they have many different brands of pills for free and also condoms.

I believe this is also relevant because how many times women have to be lectured about how they should hurry up and have kids early since it is irresponsible for them to wait later on and so on? Yet (aside from the many instances where viagra serves other purposes) limp d*ck it's nature's way of saying men should not longer be reproducing yet many are constantly defying nature. It is absurd.

This one is true, and I hate it as much as anyone else, but still I, a woman, feel too embarrassed to cry in public. So, this double standard is useless for females and harmful for males (and females too, in the end, because we cohabitate, and it's all a chain reaction with various consequences).

Depends how confident and to whom. Because there's the other tendency to think that, a confident woman is a narcissist. Also, I noticed we women are more attracted to confident women than men are (of course, not all men, but I noticed there's a general tendency, men look for other qualities in women than we women look up to other women).

The incorrect use of "than" would call into question the impact teachers have had on this particular person. I get the implied double standard, but the Kardashians aren't actually paid to teach c**p lessons to our society, it's just a sad side effect of their existence.

It's interesting how comments about the vapidity of American media always leads back to the Kardashians somehow. Apparently they are our current benchmark for being disappointed in American culture. Remember when it was Paris Hilton? And Anna Nicole Smith before that? This isn't exactly a new phenomenon.

People can downvote my comment all they want, but I'm not "hating on" Islam, I'm just saying the truth. The Bible tells you to kill people as well - the difference isn't in the fundamental text, but the fact that a lot of moderates only choose the acceptable or convenient parts of their religions. Most ancient religions involve something considered crime or injustice in modern society, but that's just a matter of them being unchanging books written long ago. In my opinion, that's a bad thing to base your life on, even if you're trying to ignore the bad parts.

Just because we live in and are forced into being part of a capitalist system does not mean we cannot be opposed to it. The fact that we are forced to be complicit in the system is part of why socialists get so angry. Do people expect socialists to go live wild in the woods or something? For example modern society pretty much demands we own a mobile phone now or we can't be a functioning member of society.

You still have a choice to choose "the lesser evil", by picking up a economic and less monopolistic technological brand. On the other hand, however, people are given Apple products as presents pretty much, actually. But you do have a valid point.

Society needs to learn that a strong female character DOES NOT mean a female who goes around hitting men and shooting things. It means a well-written female with an unwavering character.

I fully agree with this. If a man hits a woman it's NEVER OK, but even when a woman is physically abusive, the majority of people argue that it's still not okay for a man to fight back physically. Yet those same people arguing that, like to argue that men and women should be treated equal, and that lack of equality is the biggest issue with society!

This one is weird to me, not because it's wrong but because I never knew that a woman hitting a man was even moderately acceptable. Growing up my grandmother was always stronger than my grandfather so when they fought it was on more equal grounds. So I was taught that all violence was wrong no matter the gender.

This is close to the thought that a woman who gets touched without permission is sexual assault but a man getting touched without permission obviously liked it because he was getting attention. Example : Time magazine silence breakers where they only glossed over the males who were assaulted, raped, and harassed.

Second of all, i guess NOBODY ever did the "dont go out with many guys then" phrase before, you REALLY came up with some original thought there, i am proud of you <3 And third of all, even if you only meet ONE person that way, it could be a potential murder, and of course the chance increases with more persons, but being a good person can also bite :D Please continue being awesome, people like you brighten my day xD (and sorry for my english)

I don't see how this is a double standard. Statistically, speaking women are far less likely to murder a random man, thus men don't need to fear being murdered when meeting someone online.

I agree that double standard isn't really the right way to describe it. But it's a very worrying social trend that applies to one gender more than another so I think that's why it's here.

My mother got those comments her entire life and they're just as hurtful as telling people they're fat. She ended up feeling very bad about her body and going on special weight-gaining diets. Once, we were walking up the stairs in our apartment block and a neighbor opened her door, poked her head out, said "You're all bones. You should eat more," then immediately closed the door again. Had she been waiting for us just to pass judgement? Who does she think she is, that she can drop unsolicited opinions?

It's not okay. Who said it was okay? As someone overweight I find it ridiculous though that if someone wants to point out I have fat on me they poke my stomach or have even grabbed. I instinctively swiped away the arm of a professional Muay Thai fighter when he did that. Luckily he's mostly a nice guy but to hell with that. No one has the right to cross boundaries like that. I stopped talking to some people because before so much as a "Hi, how are you?" There's a pat on the stomach and "you could do with losing some weight."

who do you know that only thinks one of those is rude? Those are both rude comments and potentially hurtful. I wonder if you aren't really noting the difference between fat shaming and skinny shaming? Fat shaming is backed by an entire system of discrimination whereas being skinny is overall promoted as a positive in many western cultures. Hurt feelings are painful but not the same as systemic discrimination.

    thebridget

My former mother in law would say that to me. "You're to skinny, you need to eat more! Whenever we're in town, I never see you eating very much!" She and I always had a tense relationship, so that didn't help. Aft the time, I had been working out a LOT but my clothes still didn't fit as well as they used to. I had always been self conscious about my weight. I don't know if it was meant as a terribly executed compliment, or what, but it made me feel pretty uncomfortable. I shared my feelings with my ex husband and he just got mad at me, so maybe that gives some insight into why we're no longer together. Anyway, I think skinny shaming is different from fat shaming. It's a backhanded compliment--designed to appear nice to hurt deep down. The reasons are different for giving such a s****y "compliment," buti think you're right. Nobody really says either of those without bad intentions. One is just disguised as a compliment.

One of my friends is Catholic and teaches science in high schools. She is super enthusiastic about science too. I once asked her if anything she taught ever contradicted her Catholic beliefs. She said science is the reason she is Catholic. She is in such awe about the human body, chemistry, physics, etc. Being the nerdy scientist she is, she loves to question EVERYTHING. Through her deep questioning and constantly asking "why?" she says she started believing in the possibility of a creator. "Science is about gaining, organising, refining, reviewing and sharing knowledge. It's amazing how much we don't actually know and how many times theories have to get tweaked after new evidence is found."

    GlassOfWater

(Continued) She says that she loves to believe that 'something' designed the universe and everything in it. "I mean DNA for example is so specific. Why? Consider all the chemistry and physics and you still ask why. The idea of something or someone designing all this is the easiest way for my brain to comprehend this. Perhaps that is what God is. Some kinda of super complex force that the human has had to modify into a deity to comprehend." - I guess my point in sharing my frined's nerdiness is to show that science and religion can work together. Sorry I got carried away!

I think it depends on the app. If it's a really simple, casual game, particularly a mostly idle one (i.e. a free-to-play town builder game), I wouldn't call a person who plays those apps alone "gamers" because they aren't interactive or skill-based enough.

Saying "I'm a Christian and I believe in what the Bible says" without reading the Bible. It's more common than you think. They don't believe me when I tell them about the she-bears. Or that Jesus and his disciples said the world was going at any moment. It's in the book, you just have to read it!

This is why you don't choose one side. Register as an independent, think independently, and then you have far fewer emotions invested in politics and parties. The 2 party system is terrible. Currently, I lean more liberal than conservative, but there are things I like and dislike from both parties.

To add to this: In American TV / cinema Men can show their nipples off no problem. Women can show AS MUCH CLEAVAGE AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE, but if you see a woman's nipple - rated R. I always looked at it this way - seeing a boob won't give my daughter nightmares, but seeing violence will. That's what the rating systems should be based on; what is and isn't appropriate for children. Brief nudity won't hurt them all all, but all the violence does. What's the first thing kids do after (or while watching) Power Rangers? Kick and punch. Yes, I'm old, but you can apply that to any show full of kicking and punching. That show doesn't even have any blood in it. Now add the shows with guns and blades. Why would kids need exposure to that garbage? Anything with blades or guns should be and automatic R.

Study the history. When the minimum wage was established, it was not intended to be a “living wage.” It was intended to be used for teenagers getting their first entry-level job and transitioning into the working world.

No, Daniel... You're completely and totally wrong. THE ENTIRE reason minimum wage was established was so that people could take care of their families. Do you think in 1938 there were bunches of teenagers going to their jobs at the mall after high school?

Minimum wage is for unskilled workers (who get trained on the job). A living wage is earned by people who have learned a skill/profession.

    Master Markus

It's one of those patriarchal things. Female homosexuality is either non-threatening or "sexy", but male homosexuality is uncomfortable for some straight men to think about, and the particularly "sensitive" of these men are literally afraid of it, whether it be the chance that they're gay, or they're really religious and thinks their god will punish them for it... it's a weird and complicated thing. Also, in a lot of the very religious countries, i.e. many in the Middle East, where homosexuality is illegal, very little is thought of in relevance to women's sexuality because they're considered weak and second-class citizens anyhow.

Or still only making the attractive people be the main character who gets the boy/girl. (Also, making the "ugly" person go through a make over before anyone notices them.)

Yet a lot of these actors/actresses choose to pursue those roles based off of the portfolio of films they have success with. These are wealthy individuals who can literally pay for a personal trainer, chef, etc., if they really wanted to get in shape and pursue more serious "beautiful" roles. I don't think they need anyone to defend them and sympathize for them because they get paid millions to play the roles they choose to pursue.

So you are saying that groping a woman is better than groping a child? Both are perverts. Quite a few politicians on both sides of the aisles have a few sexual skeletons in their closets. It comes with the territory. They are powerful individuals who use their powers for their own gratification.

This is so true. When people criticize the Neo-Nazis, some who want to exterminate other races, bigots cry "free speech", but when football players peacefully kneel to try to save lives they're criticized by those same bigots who were just moments ago screeching for "free speech".

Not the point. The point is that people got mad for a harmless protest, but when those white supremacists came up, the same people were like "Yeah it's fine". Even if the Nazis do a peaceful march, they are still advocating for the idea of white people being superior, AT BEST, which is a harmful dogma. People shouldn't be elevated or put down because of a pointless thing like race, and they CERTAINLY shouldn't be killed for it.

The kneeling for the anthem controversy annoys me. It's OK for Trump to go around yelling "Make America Great Again" because, I think it's safe to assume, he thinks there's something wrong with America. But when someone else kneels because they think there's something wrong with America they come down on them like a tonne of bricks. I guess it's a difference in what they believe is actually wrong.

Kim was a woman that refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, she was a county clerk so it was her job, she claimed it was a violation of her rights to have to do it because she was a Christian. The Republicans made a big deal about her amazing protest being for the good of all. Colin Kilpatrick, American football player, refused to stand for the national anthem in protest against racism, The Republicans made a big deal about him being a trouble maker etc.

The fact is you're wrong on all accounts. The Supreme Court case of Obergefell vs Hodges meant that marriage equality was nationwide but kim davis thought she was special & didn't have to do her job to protect the sanctity of her 4 marriages. You're blaming the victims in true bigoted style.

ok so to explain this, its like being a woman thats bald. im a man and its your choice, i cant tell you what to do with your body and i dont want to. but if you are, for example, a bald or unshaven woman, expect some funny looks and weird stares. imagine if a grown man ran around in a bra and thong on the beach. he can do that, but he will likely get some weird looks

Some people thing female body hair is gross. I don't get it, it's just hair, and removing all the hair on your body is a pain in the a*s (Being to some degree pansexual probably helps, but whatever). Honestly, I don't even think it's attractive when a man has a waxed chest. I just think "Why'd you do that? It sounds painful!" In my opinion, do whatever you want with your body hair, though I would suggest trimming it just so that it doesn't stick out everywhere. Just typical grooming habits.

THIS A BILLION TIMES. On a logical, but non-comparative note: "Letting" trans woman into women's bathrooms (I'll bet insurmountable amounts of money that they were already using women's bathrooms without issue) isn't going to make it easier for men to dress up and rape little girls because guess what - if they were really going to go through all that bizarrely elaborate trouble, they'd already be doing it and a law wouldn't stop them. We HAVE a law against rape, so clearly new laws about explicitly not having a penis in a women's restroom aren't going to stop rapists!

    1. I HATE the f*****g "everyone has the same right to be miserable, hurr hurr" joke. It is SO trite. 2. Yeah, a big issue is religious people not understanding that their religion didn't invent marriage, therefore, they don't get to say what has to be marriage. It's mostly a legal thing now. In most times in history, marriage was used less for the benefit of a couple and entirely so that two families could form a physical connection. Any gods involved were just there in the way religion was - marriage wasn't generally done a certain way to please a god. Even going off of something like the Bible, many modern Christians don't seem to understand that marriage in the Bible was not "one man - one woman" but rather "one man - however many wives he wanted + concubines if that was feasible" and woman were more "property" than "enthusiastically consenting parties".

    3. The only non-religious, logical excuse I can think of to be against gay marriage is that the government has to give legal benefits to more people in general. But that's a purely numbers "benefit" as it's certainly unfair, and wouldn't be supported by egalitarians.

I have long believed that same-sex couples should be able to exchange vows. All they need to do is come up with another name for it. Marriage is and has always meant a man and a woman. If they can come up with "bromance," surely they can find another name for marriage.

It's really not cheaper. If you buy and roast a chicken. It is cheaper and healthier than buying nuggets. An Apples or oranges (when in season) are usually cheaper than candy bars. Some people just don't have access to this food or don't know what to do with it.

I've always thought it a bit weird when people talk about some simple, unprocessed things being super expensive. I mean, raspberries are really expensive for some reason (probably because they go off fast), but you can get a bag of apples or tangerines for like, $5 where I live. You can also get some relatively cheap meat. I mean, you won't get some quality cuts like filet mignon, but if you NEED cheap food you can make like, the good-tasting stew out of cheap cuts of beef.

It is debatable is organic food any healthier than other food. There is plenty of organic junk food available and most of the healthy food is not organic.

I just want to say this because a lot of people seem to believe this myth: ORGANIC FOOD ISN'T HEALTHIER FOR YOU. The growing of it requires less and/or different kinds of pesticides. Sometimes the environmental impact is better (it can depend on the food.), but it's not healthier. Meat that is organic involves animals raised without antibiotics (most importantly, the preemptively used antibiotics), which usually improves the health of the animal while alive, but doesn't change the health content of the meat after slaughter.

Wheat is heavily subsidized in the US. Mc Donalds can make a burger cost $1 because the bread is subsidized by the government, and there's almost no beef involved. The fat and quantity of toxic chemicals in that meal is huge.

No that's economics I can makes french fire for about 25 cents. Now if you want to complain the government subsides corn which makes a pound of beef cheaper than a pound of carrots, sure.

Most people are born with several features like eyelids and necks. If you don't want to see something, close your eyes or turn your head. It's like people bitching about something on the radio. Or how personal some people get. You would never ask a straight couple how they have sex, but I have heard people asking Homosexuals that exact question. I hate how their one argument against PDA of Homosexuals is that it makes them think of how they sleep together, and that is gross. Well, imagining old people doing it is gross... I don't really see the double standard here... I'm vegeterian AND I donc "discard carelessly my rubbish", so what's the point ? Is there like an "exclusively vegeterian rubbish polluting the ocean" that I'm not aware of ? It concerns everyone actually, no matter what we eat !

    SiYuan

No, I don't think it meant it for all vegetarians. It specifically meant it to those people, who will be vegetarian to protect animals, but will still carelessly throw rubbish away. We have a saying in Hungary: "Akinek nem inge, ne vegye magára." ("If it's not your shirt, don't put it on"), meaning that if it does not apply to you, do not take it personally. Even if it has the words vegetarian in it.

"I can't [insert fringe benefit] but people with different/better jobs can." I can't stand the guy either, but this is not a double standard.

They arrest me for running into the White House, but they don't arrest the POTUS!

Have you heard of a f*ckboy? They aren't exactly the same, but you can't say that men sleeping around is encouraged.

I don't get it. They get elected, this is what the people wanted. F**k if Hillary wanted to be POTUS she would've tried harder.

This one makes no point whatsoever. The fact is Donald Trump is President and you need to get used to it and stop whining.

I don't see where its acceptable for a guy to have multiple partners... he's still a cheater and gets dumped the same way a girl would be...

i guess it is but if all the partners are all in equal relationships with one another then that's another story but if it is just the guy then that's pretty much called a cheater

3rd time this is on the list. It's bad for both to be promiscuous and neither should be applauded (and I certainly don't know anyone with half a brain who thinks guys with multiple partners are "cool")

A key that opens many locks is far more impressive than a lock that can be opened by many keys.

Except people are neither locks or keys. I mean, if YOU want to think of yourself as a soulless, inanimate object, go ahead, but I consider MYSELF a person.

Why use twitter if you hate it? It is a choice to use twitter not a necessity.

Reword it, and I could see it as a double standard, e.g., When someone repeatedly tweets criticisms of other people for making tons of lame tweets.

Depends on the purpose of your account. I hate most of Facebook but I use it as means of communication while doing team projects at school, and also, as a way of receiving advices on degus and corgis' care by fellow owners.

Double standard within your “double standard” post: lowly employee does all the are work and the BOSS does nothing 🤣🤣🤣🤣Well...years early BOSS did all the work to build a business, while the future employee did nothing.

In situations where that is the case, it likely could be described by the tournament theory. The boss won the tournament against his coworkers when he was at your level. Now he's being rewarded for that victory, not necessarily for his current accomplishment/productivity.

The pervasive presence of societal contradictions highlighted on platforms like Twitter echoes many of the themes explored in our earlier examination of how double standards shape daily life.

You might find it insightful to explore more about these contrasting expectations and their visual portrayals in social double standards depicted through powerful imagery.
