Uh, that's the "only" reason we don't bite off our fingers? WTF?

Some psychological illnesses can cause people to bite themselves. I once saw someone who was always restrained but had bit off most of the lips and tongue. It felt so shocking to see that someone could override that strong desire to keep our bodies from injury.

The only thing? I can think of at least two others. Anticipation of pain and common sense.

We have enormous strength as humans but our brain spends a lot of time and energy suppressing it. Those stories where a Granny throws a wrecked car off her granchild's pram? Granny already has the power to do that. All that's different is that the brain has said, yes, valid reason, go ahead!

For a long time I had a recurring nightmare where I had to bite someone's finger off in order for me to escape. I don't know what I was escaping and I no longer have that particular nightmare. I will always remember the taste of blood and dirty finger.

One could prove this true or false by testing if a person could bite off someone else's finger. Not as impossible an experiment as it sounds: it would be creepy but you could do the experiment with someone who was already dead. I seriously wonder if this is true, as there are bones in fingers, and I can't bite through a comparable size chicken bone.

I'm finding that a lot of these "disturbing facts" are absolutely not ruining my day. This one just isn't even surprising.

One of my son's friends who overdosed on opiates was found with his finger (bitten off) in his mouth. The coroner speculated he was dying of asphyxiation and tried to clear his breathing pathway with his finger but unfortunately, wasn't successful.

I strained many muscles coughing and throwing up from bronchitis and now COVID! Our bodies are violent! BTW, you can keep your eyes open while sneezing, it's just not comfortable. I was driving home from work around an appropriately called blind corner where school buses pull into a hidden drive when I had to sneeze! I probably looked like Wendy Williams but the sneeze was so sudden and the road narrow.

The only thing that stops us? How about our desire to keep our fingers in tact? Or to avoid pain? These are both conscious decisions.

So do cats like bells and crinkly things for that reason? Like little prey noises and bone crunching 😵 mine loves to play with a toy on a string as i make it dart then hide, then dart and hide again, but inevitably starts taking the string casually in an effort to have a go playing with my hand. Had it for just over one week, was horrible. One of the only good things I felt was when some of the nurses, who were more used to that i guess, would chat to me, and look at my eyes and understand what I was 'pointing' to. My sister had an innate ability to read my eyes and translate. But to be shoved in a corner, ignored, it's mental anguish. People saying 'I know you're still in there' but sounding uncertain was scary, I wanted to scream 'I'm here, don't worry, figure it out and omg I'm thirsty!!'. Getting movement back is like a second chance that I will never take for granted. Even just being with the person can be a great comfort (EDIT: thank you everyone for your kind words)

Sure this happened but it wasn't nearly as common as people keep saying, and all of those "posed corpse" photos you see online are just living people. The stands were there to help them stay upright and in place long enough for the picture to take, since it took bloody forever to take a picture. The only "lifelike" positions actual corpses were photographed in were sleeping/lying down positions.

People tend to think of 'bacteria' as poison, when it's everywhere and on everything and if we tried to eliminate all of it in our life, our immune system would be useless. Think about it, we touch things all the time and we rub our eyes or pick something out of our teeth, but we don't end up in hospital for it.

I bet that's a fun place to be at night in the semi-dark.
