68 Teens Who Wore Their Moms’ Vintage Prom Dresses Decades Later, And Absolutely Killed It
Choosing the perfect prom dress can be a stressful affair - unless, of course, your mom has a rocking one stashed away in her closet. More and more teens these days are donning their moms' old frocks to the big night, and you know what? They look absolutely bomb.
We can't even blame them for wanting to borrow. According to PromGirl, the leading online Prom dress retailer in the US, a prom night in 2017 can cost over $2000 in total! Mind you, this is only if you completely blow out on limo rentals, fancy dinner, and a professional photoshoot. But most prom tickets alone cost over $100, and a trendy dress can run up to 4 times as much. By reaching for your mom's vintage vestments, you're not only bringing chic retro styles back to life, but you're saving yourself loads of money and hassle (and you just might overfill your mom's heart with pride).
Most recently, a high school senior named Ally Johnson from Hilliard, Ohio, decided to sport her mom's sumptuous gown from 1995 to her own prom. "People were shocked, they didn't think that could have been my mom's senior prom dress," she told TODAY Style. "It's a vintage, old Hollywood look." Scroll down to see more beauties who looked picture perfect for prom in their moms' old threads! (h/t)

maybe in a couple more generations the dress will morph into a mermaid cut ;)
This kind of dress will probably never get out of style. Remember to save it for your children!
The Mom On The Left Says Her Daughter Was Left Disappointed By A Dress She Ordered Online, So She Raided Her Closet And Found This Saucy Purple Number Instead
Is it just me or do the parent in the 80's and 90's look so much older than their children at the same age?!
Could be that the photos aren't actually prom photos but something else (they attended a wedding together... or their engagement party...)

Thinks dress pattern was published by Butterick for 20 years straight. I think it might even still be in their catalogues. It is a classic style that is unlikely to become dated.
Wearing My Mom's Prom Dress 25 Years Later!
I love the beautiful simplicity of this dress. And it fits her like a dream
My Daughter Did That. She Wore My Exact Prom Dress From My Prom
Hairstyles make all the difference. The dress looks dated in the older photo, but looks stylish in the newer ones. I guess it's the hair!
Prom 1980 Something And Prom 2016
That dress is stunning and you both rock it. Seriously, it's really beautiful, both pictures are beautiful.
Had The Privilege Of Wearing My Mom's Dress To Prom Tonight
Me In 1996 And My Daughter, Zoe In 2016 Wearing The Same Prom Dress
I know a girl named Zoe (with blue hair), who is also wearing a black lacy dress to prom!
Kids these days (including myself) look so much much younger than our parents did at 16-18!
Simple and sophisticated at the same time. Beautiful. By the way, your daughter looks a lot like you (except the hairs color ^_^ )
Some parents have their kids young. Nothing wrong with that.

"My Daughter Wore My Gown To A Friends Senior Prom That I Wore For My Sister In Law's Wedding 20 Years Ago" - that's a mouthful
I'm curious; wouldn't her "sister-in-law's wedding" in fact be her brothers wedding (or sisters wedding)? Seems like an odd choice of words
Wore The Dress My Mum Made When She Was 17. In 1987. And Wore It To My Senior Ball Last Weekend
So do I! my mumma is so talented! unfortunately I didn't get the same talent! ahah

Wearing My Mother's Prom Dress From 1983
I don't see these kind of dresses a lot for proms. It's nice to see some are trying different kinds. It looks very lovely!
This looks very similar to the dress I wore for my wedding in 1980. It was $20 on clearance. :-) I wore a floppy white hat. My first husband wore a mint green suit. Lol!
Load More Replies..."Little House On the Prairie" was still on tv. "Prairie" was actually a clothing style for a minute.
Load More Replies...This was a VERY popular dress from the 80"s . Gunne Sax was the brand. Everyone wore this style at that time.
I have a Gunne Sax wedding dress that I bought at their outlet in SF in 1986 for my wedding. It was $49.99 and didn't look like any of the other dresses (Gunne Sax). When I tried it on (only 1 dressing room that everyone shared - it was a large room with mirrors) everyone turned around and said, "Where did you find that dress!" That was my cue to get it. hahaha
Load More Replies...Gunne Sax by Jessica of San Francisco, perchance? Wore those to my proms in SoCal in 1977 and 1978.

Load More Replies...I am guessing something happened to her mom and had to recreate the picture with her dad. If so, then what a beautiful moment!
If mom had died, you would understand the emotion & pride on her dad's face when his daughter wore her dress.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. And now I find this picture a little bit sad. :'( (even though it's beautiful!)
Load More Replies...Her dad is like "You better get her the f home on time or you're dead"
He looks like the guys in the other photo? Prly her dad. Either way beautiful dress.
Yes it’s her father, I wore this dress when she was 4 years old and she always wanted to wear it to prom. By her request she wanted to recapture the picture.
Revamped My Mom's Old Prom Dress And Wore It To My Senior Prom
Agreed! Not like how "Andie" ruined her boss's old prom dress in the movie Pretty in Pink. hahaha
Load More Replies...Looks like the mom went to the prom with Patrick Swayze. lol He sure resembles him in the picture.
I Think It's The Most Beautiful, But I'm A Little Biased Toward My Own Family....1987 And 2017
If this is the same dress the collar and especially the skirt were revamped.
Prom was in 1987, heaven's gate suicides happened in 1997. So...you might have read the whole Wikipedia article.

The sequins aren't the same. So it's either not the same dress or it had a major makeover prior to this photo.
Nothing was changed but the slit was raised as I ripped it back in 1996. It's called a 20 year old faded picture.
Load More Replies...Different styling and different photo quality I think. Plus almost all of the new ones are brighter, makes a huge difference! ☺️

I keep thinking '20 years ago? Wow it looks modern for an 80s dress!' then realising that it's actually from the late 90s.
I was thinking the opposite -- with the hairstyle and faded photo quality, my first impression was that the picture on the left was from the '60s!

On the color, don't forget, after that many years, color is gonna change, fade or yellow. Or it's just better picture quality;)

My Senior Prom Dress 1996, My Daughter's Prom In 2017
This is such a wonderful dress! my god, I know it could sound a little dumb or strange, but.. where did you buy it? do you have a name or something? I would really like to search if something like that does still exist, nowadays.. Things you can buy now are so.. boring, and without originality..
Oh my word, I have no idea. It is solid beads and seed pearls. It is very heavy. I purchased it over 20 years ago, it held up really well!
Load More Replies...I only added it yesterday. Thank you!

My Daughter Wore My Re-purposed Prom Dress From 1987 And Loved It!
I see how she re-cut it, but did she dye it as well? Or has the old picture faded-out?
She readied it. That was an actual color. My wedding dress is still this color. Excuse me, I need to get some wine

Mother and daughter lookalike. But what's uncanny is their dates have similar features as well.
Curtain dresses (called "meringue") were in, along with big hair, big freaking ruffles and pounds of makeup. I have nightmares still
Load More Replies...My Mom Going To Her Senior Prom 1987 Vs. Me Going To My Senior Prom 2017 (Same Dress Just A Few Changes Made)
I call your bluff. And even if it is the same base, it's not the same dress.
I think it's just 2-yards of tulle tucked into the belt, with the original skirt underneath.
Load More Replies...I like the daughter's alteration of the dress...much better update!!!
Both look lovely! Is it just me, or does mom's date in "87" look like Ryan Gosling? A lot!!
'90 Vs '08
What happened to the ruffles?! Looked better with the ruffles.

My Sister In 2001 And My Daughter In 2017!
I love these vintage styles! And it's a good way to ensure a unique look for your event. I sell prom dresses to girls for a living and nowadays the quality is questionable and the styles are very similar. Not to mention increasingly more revealing for a teen. These vintage dresses are on point though
At his wedding in 1969, my father wore a coat my grandfather bought in 1960...I did the same at my wedding 1997
Sweet. Probably not possible with modern dresses and crappy quick fashion. My sister has several cocktail dresses after our mother and grandmother (I took the plus size body after my father and she's petite like my mother) that are still in great condition and the stuff she bought herself fell apart after few parties.
It's very nice to see that the clothing is being re-used for future generations! This gives it even more meaning.
It kills me to think that clothing that I wore in high school is already classified as "vintage"...and I graduated in 96! 😖
What a great article. Love seeing mom's and daughters have a shared experience several years apart. Really fun!
I was gonna wear my mom's prom dress tried it on my freshman yr but when it came time my mom couldn't remember where she put it
I wish I could do this, but my mom and I are just not the same sizes.
