“Mozzarella Sticks”: 40 Life-Threatening Things That Are More Deadly Than Most People Think
Interview With AuthorThe uncomfortable truth that we all want to avoid is that someday, we’ll all die. However, until that moment comes, it’s up to us to ensure that our lives have purpose and meaning, that we leave behind a positive legacy, and that we get to enjoy as many awesome things as we can. The longer we live, the more time we have to do all of those fun things with great people. That’s why we take care of our health and avoid taking dumb risks.
However, when you sit down and think about it, there are far more risks to our health out there than many of us realize—and many of them aren’t all that apparent. Redditor u/adventure21mc started up a viral thread on the r/AskReddit online group, asking internet users about the things that cause death “more than people realize,” and many shared their thoughts. You’ll probably be more careful in the future, as you’ll never look at things like driving while sleepy and avoiding treating dental problems the same way again.
Keep in mind, though, that the purpose of this article isn’t to make you scared, simply to make you more aware of what reality can be like, without any frills. There is no such thing as being ‘perfectly safe.’ We can do our best to avoid many dangers, and we shouldn’t stop living our lives because we’re too frightened of getting hurt.
We reached out to redditor u/adventure21mc for a friendly chat about their viral thread, how to balance safety with living to the fullest, and how to make life feel more purposeful. The OP was kind enough to answer Bored Panda's questions. "I think my post resonated with many people due to them discovering that many common causes of death go unreported or underreported. While I did get a few responses I was expecting (alcoholism, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc.), I did not know stairs and tripping kill thousands of people every year," they said.
"In addition, what inspired me to make this post was the hundreds of thousands of people who die every year due to medical malpractice, which is a very common form of death that nevertheless goes underreported or ignored by society." Read on for the rest of our interview with the author of the thread.

Texting and driving.
This must be on top! Because it also causes other people to die for a totally stupid and selfish behavior.
My son in law's mother was killed instantly in a head on crash with his 9 year old sister in the car, who thankfully only had a broken arm, and the police said that they thought she may have been reading a text but they couldn't prove it. This has always terrified me with my own children and I stay on their backs about it, but especially so after we lost Pam. She was a very kind and hardworking woman, who worked her tail off to support her family. Her husband had been bickering at her through texts that day and they thought she had been reading one but couldn't prove it and her daughter had fallen asleep so she didn't know. It was a very sad and horrible situation. Her children are doing very well now though since their custody has been taken over by their older brother.
Load More Replies...Clearly all the idiots that do this on a daily basis
Load More Replies...Hmmm they make s**t like " self driving cars ", " AI assisted braking ", " câmera assisted parking ", how hard would it be to get a câmera on the driver side of the car that detected if the driver was " playing " with their phone, and automaticly set the car in " limp mode " for a few hours?
Had a texting a*****e in a semi-size dump-truck blow through a 4-way stop and total my car (if I was about 5-ft. more into the intersection he would have killed me). Then when the cop arrived he LIED and said I ran the stop.......which the cop knew he was full of s**t since it took his truck 25 yards to stop (even with a blown tire) plus there were witnesses who saw everything. After I got my insurance payout I pulled some strings with some folks I know at the DMV who were able to get this a*****e's license suspended for a year AND he also had to pay some hefty-fines to get it back. If he wasn't a lying-a*****e and admitted he was at fault then he wouldn't have had to face all that s**t. Don't be an a*****e and F*****G HANG THE PHONE UP !!!!!!
Why, oh why, can't someone just slap these idjits upside the head before they cause a life-ending accident?
I get so mad when I see people on their phone whilst driving. There's just no need.
They had an advertising campaign here in Australia where they played the last texts people sent before they died in an accident most were trivial things like "I'll be home soon" or "I'll get the milk". It was so powerful in driving the message home that most this c**p can wait until you see your loved ones. Don't text and drive
Here in the Uk it's been illegal to drive and text for a few years now. The fine isn't huge but the points on your license mount up until you are banned after 3 offences - less if you have recently passed your driving test (after which you have a 12 month driving ban, then have to retake your driving test ....)
Covid. People don't take it seriously enough. They don't mask. They don't get vaccinated.
One of my friends lost two members of her family at the same time from covid - and both of them were fairly young people, not old people.
Covid can also mess you up. One of my family members has long covid, and she has been seriously damaged now for seven months. Sleeps 16 hours a day, has trouble eating, brain fog, weakness.
Covid kills and it also cripples, and people pretend we aren't still in the middle of a pandemic. They act like it's no big deal.
It's a big deal.
Yeah, good luck with that. There ain't no river deeper or faster than De Nial!
Load More Replies...Guys, I lost both of my parents in 2020, my dad was old. My mom was 45 and has a brain stroke after recovering from it. Before any vaccines were made... I had a miscarriage and almost died to. People takes it as a joke. I saw what covid did inside hospitals, and people chocking in elevators... I lost so much is unbearable, never underestimate your enemy...
I am so sorry this happend to you and your family. I hope you have good friend that help(ed) you through this horrible time. all the best for you, you truely deserve nothing but happiness for the rest of you life.
Load More Replies...Had COVID for a month, yes fully boosted and everything. I am still trying to recover, sleep is screwy, can't get back to work. Brain fog, depression, just general exhaustion. This is not a fun trip.
It's a very weird virus. I work with Covid patients and the many body systems it affects is bizarre
Load More Replies...One of the things now being understood - COVID isn't just an infection in itself, but an activator. You caught something mild years ago and the virus has been living in you benignly since? Well, now it wants to try again. Multiply that by dozens of minor infections, and it can hit you like a truck.
Yes... my mother had a blood clot problem. She got covid. 2 weeks later brain stroke....
Load More Replies...I have an auto-immune disease and from day one have been really worried about Covid. I have a friend who has acted like it's no big deal from the word go, even when she and her family were all really ill with it, she still told me I was being over the top. Sigh. I guess you just can't help/educate some people.
They will all minimise it until someone they care about dies

Load More Replies...Ever since having covid I've felt out of breath and had a cough that just won't shift .. it has a hold of me for good it seems :(
I got congestive heart failure as a result of the first variants of covid.
My husband is immunosuppressed and his doctor told us we would ALWAYS be "Under pandemic protocol". You wouldn't believe the c**p we take for this. We've lost family members and friends because of it and my work makes me ask EVERY TIME if there's a zoom option for meetings and one supervisor said "Oh are you STILL doing that?"
Stress. Your body can only handle so much of it and it’s labeled the “silent killer” for that reason. With your high blood pressure and the 5 hours of sleep a night because of the stress, It will creep up on you sooner than you think.
Waking up in the middle of the night with a heart thumping like mad... Being tired all the time, having things to do but just can't bc it's too hard to find motivation.
Also, please be tested for sleep apnea. Waking up like this is a symptom of that.
My Dad has that ..he uses a sleeping /breathing mask at bedtime and I'm convinced my partner has it too ..but he won't get checked -.-
Load More Replies...On the positive side, if your blood pressure's low, a good bout of stress will get you through the day without those pesky "Whoops! No head blood :(" episodes!
This ... It sounds like me. I'm raising my grandsons, I have cancer, and another illness I'm just handling. They both have ADHD, my oldest grandson, is getting in trouble in school, because of his ADHD. I can't get his mom to sign off on letting me get him into a doctor to get on medication. He's driving his teacher crazy, and me. The youngest, is all over the place, all of the time. By the time I get to bed (youngest, I can't get him to bed until he's exhausted, 4am). By The time I clean the house from the day (I clean up toys, etc.. While their up. It's the sweeping,cetc.. I have to do). I don't get to bed until around 7-8 am. Get up around 12pm. I have to have 2 hours to wake up, before he gets up. So, I'm stressed, sick, and over tired all of the time.
You poor woman! This is too much for anyone. Is there no aid or assistance you can get?
Load More Replies...I was on sickleave for almost 8 years because of mental breakdown caused by stress. Taken 11 years now of therapy, medications, doctor appointments of different kinds, youth organisations, counselling, various trial-and-error attempts (studies, work practice in various procentages) and are still not well enough to be counted as "normal". So yeh... take this s**t seriously!! Of course most people won't be as bad as me, but people should expect it to take YEARS for them to return to normal again. Because that's almost a guarantee when it hits you.
Stress is a silent killer. It ravages your body both physically and mentally.
Some people can feel completely overwhelmed, anxious, and fearful for their safety after hearing about all the potential risks waiting for them just going about their daily lives. Bored Panda wanted to get redditor u/adventure21mc's opinion on how to live one's life to the fullest, while also staying safe.
"In my eyes, being alert and trusting your instincts is a good way to balance safety and living life well. While I don't think you should go through life being cynical about everything, having a backup plan and looking for potential warning signs in your life is a good way to avoid potential danger in death," they explained.
"While death may come for us all eventually, taking precautions and taking care of yourself physically and mentally is a good way of increasing your chances of having a longer lifespan."
Depression is responsible for 850,000 deaths anually.
Depression can be a terminal illness. A body and mind are not separate from each other, when one is damaged or hurt it is manifested and felt in the other and if the mind is suffering and hurt then the effects are seen and felt physically and vice versa. I wish more people understood this and showed the same compassion and understanding to people suffering with mental health issues and illnesses as they do to those with visible so called physical illnesses x
Load More Replies...I can also personally vouch for this
Load More Replies...Yes. I think people that haven't experienced it, or have only experienced a more minor bout of it just don't get how serious it is. There's such a fine line between "I'm depressed and struggling and need help", and "she committed suicide". There's not always a lot of steps between. There won't always be grand drama leading up to it. When someone says they need help, they need help now.
I agree. But I also feel so many now are shouting to the world about their varied mental health struggles without being diagnosed, or even ever seen, for whichever and whatever one they "have " this week. Doing so has created a situation where people take it less seriously because it is difficult to get anyone to actually believe you have an actual illness and you aren't like others who make it up for attention, excuses and "likes".
Load More Replies...i believe that we shouldn't say "committed sui*icde, we should say "They died from sadness, "or something. they didn't commit to it like a relationship. they simply couldn't get away from it.
Sadly there is still a stigma attached to mental health disorders like depression, ADHD, and anxiety. People sometimes view you as weaker and more emotional when that is truly not the case. I really hope that in the near future there is more research done of mental health and more open discussion about it. So many people in the United States cannot seek therapy due to the astronomical costs. It is truly sad.
I would 100% go to medical testing to learn more about anxiety and depression. I want to know more of why they're almost always connected. I would totally participate in a study about that. It needs to be common knowledge of how terrible and crippling they can be.

Falling coconuts cause about 150 deaths annually
Coconuts [take out] around 150 people worldwide each year, which makes them about ten times more dangerous than sharks.
But the moment you suggest coconut week everyone acts like you're the weird one.
I'd be pretty salty if my whole life culminated in death by coconut. I'd haunt people.
At least it'd be quick though. You wouldn't know what hit you.
Load More Replies...You’re more likely to be killed by a vending machine falling on you than a shark. Poor things get a bad rap
Them vending machines are vicious. (Jokes aside though, I know that’s actually true.)
Load More Replies...We have signs that say “watch for falling coconuts” all over our state. In my 50yo lifetime, my family’s (tourist-driven) business has dealt with dozens of minor injuries and 1 hospitalization. It’s the last danger and liability anyone here thinks of, but it happens.
It's hard to imagine minor injuries from them? Either it hits or misses, I'd have guessed. Any more info?
Load More Replies...I want to know where Coconuts are taking out 150 people to? And how does this dating work? Where does Coconuts get money to pay for said going out? Does Coconuts have a job or are they leaching off of Coconut lovers? So many questions.
Ok - fear unlocked. But at least coconuts still aren’t quite as dangerous as hippos, that’s something.
Driving while sleepy.
No they are not, actually they don't work at all, best choice in this case is find a detour Park your car and have a small nap.
Load More Replies...This can be in fact a killer, i once was driving with " a eye Open and the other One closed " ( sleepy as hell ), i remember looking at my side Mirror to Change lanes, i Saw a green Ford Escort right behind me, and i still changed the Lane, dude on the Ford swerved hard to the left só he hitted my rear fender, and slammed his car entire left side in to the freeway guard rails, i imidiately woke up looked for a detour on the side of the road and parked there, waiting for him ( insurances here are mandatory and it was 100% my fault ) só dude parked the car behind me, gets out, and my 1st thought was " i didn't died in the accident, but Im gonna die now ... " Frikking OX of a man, Im a big guy, but compared to him i frikking was Olive Oil, dude was a frikking 1.90m tall body builder and he was pissed, luckelly i assumed my fault imidiately, took care of both our insurances, and in less than a week his car was in the shop, funny thing we ended up becoming " friends " dude was a bouncer in a night club, and i always got in for free lol.
The Tories wanted to make "driving while tired" illegal in the UK after a couple of serious lorry crashes. Which would have been totally untestable and unenforceable, and is the sort of s**t you come up with when a chauffeur drives you to work each morning.
Tories, go figure ..... next step backwards to legalising child prostitution and opium dens eh ? I've been in the sad position of having to work with / associate with some of these people and, pretty much to a man / woman, they are seriously, if not dangerously out of touch Bastards every one of them - especially Boris's progeny.

Don't drive while Sleepy, Weepy, Sneezy, Dopey, or any of the other Dwarfs.
even grumpy! People often don't think about that. It can cause impulsiveness, and people driving angry are twice as likely to get into accidents. Call an uber

My cousin fell asleep on the highway when i was 11ish. she hit a sleeping family, iirc. they were ok, but my cousin was gravely injured: compound fractures, internal bleeding, ruptured spleen, damaged organs. Super lucky to have lived through it. PULL OVER. and not just to the side: someone else might hit you. pull WAY off, exit, side road, anything.
What you're supposed to do is pull into the services, get a coffee and drink it then immediately go for a sleep. The coffee won't let you sleep too long and when you wake you benefit from a short sleep and a big caffeine injection. You should be safe to continue for another while..
The worst part of that is, sometimes you won't even feel tired - before you fall asleep. So always try to get proper rest, and avoid driving if possible if you tend to have big problems with sleep.
In the thread author's opinion, "life is about enjoyment and the memories we make. Life, to our current knowledge, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we should make use of that opportunity through memories (preferably good, though bad memories are inevitable)."
They told Bored Panda that struggles in life are unavoidable and there will be many of them. However, "enjoying the world, making good memories, and forging relationships with friends and family will do wonders in living life to the fullest and making it more purposeful."
Redditor u/adventure21mc opened up to us that though they're happy that their post got so many upvotes and comments, they feel "a little embarrassed" that their "most upvoted comment on Reddit ever asked about a subject as dark and morbid as death."
I legitimately say smoking cigarettes. I watched my mom (lung cancer), dad (bladder cancer), both grandfathers (lung and throat cancer), one grandmother ( brain cancer) and an aunt ( throat cancer but never smoked, had lived with smokers since birth)die very slowly and very painfully from decades of smoking/exposure. I smoked for 20+ years, quit 8 years ago while I was still in my 30s, but I have 2 older sisters that smoke like crazy and I hate to say it, but I am starting to see the really bad signs I saw with my other family members who passed.
If you smoke, it's going to [take you out].
Yeah, yeah, yeah.. you gotta die sometime, but do you really want it to be while you're gurgling words through a hole in your neck, begging for an extra push of morphine to dampen the pain as all your organs slowly fail?
Just. Quit.
Even if it’s a quick illness, like my dad ( lung, spine and brain cancer) it’s a horrible end that erases any happy memories of that person for a long time
Most deaths are a “horrible end that erases any happy memory of that person for a long time”. Don’t think because folks don’t get smoking cancer that their deaths are any less fraught with dementia, senility, anger, childishness and agony. Thems the breaks.
Load More Replies...My family were all smokers. I started when I went to college, not realising that I was seconhand smoker from childhood. I want to quit, tried several times but any stress I go straight back and truth is stress becomes berable. I feel benefits when Im not smoking but still I go back. It would be easier if nonsmokers understand that is not that easy to just quit, esspecially for people who didnt do this to themselves. I dont live in smoke aware country, I dont have support feom comunty, there is laws wich forbid smoking in bars and restaurants but noome contol that. Now, I will seek profesional help, there is a place where I dont have to pay until Im able to save money that I would spent on tobacco. It just os not easy amd every smoker would quit if it was that easy. Its emotinal cruch, its addiction, there is no benetfits, it stupid, its debilitating but I cant JUST QUIT.
Some studies show that quitting smoking is on the same level as quitting heroin. It's tough. I have smoked for over 20 years and have quit at least four times - just never "sticks" for more than a couple months. Quit drinking 2-1/2 years ago though.
Load More Replies...I find it very difficult to associate with anyone that smokes. It is a real turn off for me.
I feel you may be missing out on some really great people due to that thought
Load More Replies...Believe it or not, the current crop of Republican politicians are denying this. They just brought back smoking inside the Capital building, claiming that secondhand smoke is actually not that bad.
.. what?! Side effects of smoking and second hand smoke are almost exactly the same?! What is going on there 🤦♀️
Load More Replies...one of my elderly family members is currently battling lung cancer. It's horrible to watch. Don't smoke kids
Have known people with lifelong emphysema since childhood from being exposed to adult's smoke
I feel ya, OP. And I've seen what you have seen - almost exactly
Glad you quit. My mom died from emphysema 17 years ago (smoked 2 packs a day for nearly 60 years) and my oldest brother just died from the effects of bladder cancer caused by smoking (the cancer had also metastasized into the bones & lymph nodes, plus he had emphysema). I asked him when my mom died why he wouldn't quit & he'd say, "Smoking takes years off your life, but they're the bad years."
For some people, it gets them through decades of hard living , stress, anxiety, etc. so they see it as a trade-off. It’s tough.

Untreated dental problems. A cavity left untreated can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
And even if you live somewhere with free healthcare, there isn't always a dentist near you who is taking NHS patients. If I could afford private dental care, I'd be seen tomorrow. Who on Earth decided that teeth were a freakin' luxury??
Load More Replies...And this is why the division between health care and dental care is ridiculous.
In a certain way, yes, but we have to pay the full price before getting a refund. And that full price can be a couple of 100€ if you have to have some extensive dental work. Just a regular check up is almost €100 or more
Load More Replies...Good to know I'm going to die because I cannot afford a dentist.
Honestly as someone who lives in Canada with super bad periodontal disease that I can't treat because money....The best thing to do is save what little you have (I'm still saving) and if you get abscess/infection etc and your country has free healthcare, go to the ER. Happened to me two years ago. Don't leave a tooth infection untreated. The ER will give you antibiotics.
And to infected nerves, that lead to the loss of an eye. Or to lethal brain infections.
oh yep, denists compliment 'i can see you flow' made me feel better and prouder that any compliments from other ladies
Grief. People think it's a myth but you can die of a broken heart.
"It's named after an octopus trap — and that's not all that's unusual about broken-heart syndrome. It occurs almost exclusively in women."
Load More Replies...There is actually a thing called " broken heart syndrome ", in which visible scarring apears on your heart, after an extremelly traumátic event, and Im not talking about phisical trauma. ( You can Google it for more info )
I had that last summer. Also called stress induced cardiomyopathy. Mine was caused from the stress of a major surgery. Scary as hell. Luckily you can recover from it, but it take several months. It can happen again, too and is more common that you’d think.

My grandma deteriorated fast after grandpa died. I was convinced it was linked. I will see if I find the clinical studies, thank you for mentioning.
Load More Replies...I see evidence of this all the time. Clients will come in to tell us their spouse died and the firm has the Will. Many many times the surviving spouse does not live very long after the first person passes. I think perhaps they give up the desire to survive. Particularly if they are elderly.
I think I have come close. I developed Atrial Fibrillation after years of dealing with my mother's estate (lots of farm land to sell) followed by having a very toxic relative living on my property for several years. At some point it 'broke' me. Afib, but also I used to be a go to person for people wanting me to sort drama because I could assess things and ignore the drama and bias. But at some point my capacity for "BS" broke. I find myself really avoiding it now and stressing out over things that didn't used to stress me. Now I just want to live under my rock and be left alone. And not mentioned but my mom wasn't my only grief. Over several years lost my mom, step dad of 40+ years, bio dad, grandmother, close friend, and best friend of 50+ years survived stage 4 cancer and now has alzheimers. And her daughter that is like my sister had cancer and 7 surgeries. Like.. JUST... MAKE... IT... STOP...!!!
I'm sorry you had to go through all that. You dont have to do it by yourself, though. Seek help if needed. Get involved with volunteering at a local church or any other meaningful thing that brings value to others without taking from you. Be a little selfish too and a little less empathic. You'll be fine. Wishing you the best.

The fact of the matter is that there are many things that we simply can’t control. And that’s a problem because human beings want certainty and routine in their lives. They help us feel safe and ensure that we can plan for the future. So when something unpredictable happens to us, we can feel disappointed, frustrated, lost, and even traumatized, depending on the severity of the event.
However, the last thing that we want to do is to run away from these uncomfortable feelings. Instead, we ought to try embracing the fact that life on Planet Earth can be unpredictable and uncertain at times. Not everything will go to plan. Bad things happen to good people. We’ll never be prepared for all bad outcomes.
So we’re left with doing the best that we can and letting go of the need to control what’s essentially uncontrollable. We can change how we react to what’s happening to us and can adjust our expectations. Meanwhile, embracing the chaos can, in turn, help us become more resilient.
The things that we can control include what we eat, how much we exercise and spend outdoors, whether we get enough sleep and practice good hygiene, as well as whether we have meaningful relationships with others, how we deal with stress, and what we do in our spare time. That's on top of being more aware of our surroundings (are you watching where you're going? Do you look both ways before crossing the street) and knowing the basics of what to do in case of an emergency.
This is going to get buried since I’m answering so late in the game…
Not a cause of death, but still extremely important info that I am constantly telling others about: suffering a spinal cord injury from diving into water.
I’m a quadriplegic and run a nonprofit that works with people after they suffer a spinal cord injury. Other than car accidents, diving into water is the second most common cause for spinal cord injuries that we see. The worst part about it is that it is probably the most preventable cause.
I’m constantly amazed that people will dive into water without knowing how deep it is, or even just jumping headfirst into an oncoming wave on the beach. If you are going to dive into the water, dive straight out, not down so that your head will potentially hit the bottom or a submerged object that you didn’t know was there. If you have kids, teach this PLEASE!
I have seen SO many YouTube videos of people careless driving in bodies of water with unknown depth (i. e. Flooded roads/areas , creeks...). Some of them just ruined their cars, others drowned. It's just baffling to see someone maneuvering around roadblocks or stopped vehicles "because this little water is no problem to conquer with my driving skills" 🤦♀️
I don't like watching videos where someone dies or gets hurt. Some people think it's hilarious to watch videos of people having accidents, but I always think "Are they okay?".

He dived into the pool and smacked his head on the bottom, even though he was an excellent swimmer and diver. Had a concussion and shortly thereafter developed seizures. Went on vacation with his new wife and was swimming in the ocean when she noticed he was floating face down on the waves. They got him back to the beach but he had drowned. Calm day and he had been swimming in the ocean since he was a kid. They believe he had a seizure while he was in the water.
When my Mom was around 20, she split her skull open diving off a waterfall with a bunch of friends. Luckily, my Dad had jumped in before her and was still in the water, so he was able to pull her out and drive her to the hospital before she bled to death. He said the top of her head was just a big skin flap down to the bone, and she soaked through 2 beach towels. I've done cliff diving at an old rock quarry before, but we swam in it first to make sure it was safe (water was well over 50 feet deep). Most waterfalls are super dangerous if you don't land in exactly the right spot.
I completely agree. Even as an adult, I would never dive into an unknown pool of water. Always feet first!
Oh god. This is so true. My dad and his friend was traveling in Africa, and at some point they got in a boat to experience their rivers and streams and stuff. The water was quite cloudy and murky, and at some point, my Dad's friend got bored of just sitting and looking and the scenery, and declared he wanted to go and swim in those treacherous waters. He asked my Dad if he wanted to join him, but my Dad, who was the overly cautious one, and his friend the reckless, sparky one, declined, and urged his friend not to jump into the water. He had some sort of sense of impending doom. His friend laughed him off, and promptly jumped off the boat, head first. He didn't come back up for air. Panicked, my Dad and the African captain rushed into the water to save him, feet first, and found that the water was dangerously shallow, and that it was a faint shade of pink, from all the diluted blood. Now, there were crocodiles and dangerous animals in the river, so this risky rescue operation had to
be done swiftly and with remarkable presence of mind, since the scent of the diluted blood would attract predators that could attack. They fumbled around numbly and quickly in the waters, till their hands brushed against skin, whose could only be their friend's. After they found him, they quickly hurried him to the nearest hospital, and found that, thankfully, he wasn't dead, only unconscious. Yet, when the friend woke up, he found he was nearly totally paralyzed, and had to use a wheelchair, have a tube feeder, and could barely speak, eat, move, write, or anything at all. He was horribly lucid, which was a curse because he was aware of his awful disability, stuck inside a motionless husk, unable to move, to do anything, except to think in the quietude of his mind. One day I jumped from a high dive and my neck sort of snapped the wrong way. I shook it off and just had a sore neck for a few days (lucky me) but it was a wake up call and suddenly diving was not so fun. I have since done cliff diving but I didn't "dive". I went feet first and sort of cannon balled. Most of us are born young and immortal and then over time we realize that our meat sacks are actually rather fragile.
I have a large swimming hole near where I currently live where people can jump off a rock-face into the water below. However, this all depends on the level of the water. I see more and more children, teens and young people jumping of the rock face when the water level is too low. Furthermore, more and more people are bringing alcohol with them to this swimming hole; drinking and water is a dangerous and idiotic combination. There have been deaths due to broken necks yet people still do it. The rangers put signs up, however, people still disobey them. Many people severely underestimate their abilities when it comes to water.
I blame Baywatch in the 90s for this. Real lifeguards WOULD NEVER dive head first lol
Lost my best friend to this when we were younger. Lived for 9 years as a quadriplegic before a heart attack took him. Crushed a vertebrae diving into a wave in the ocean.
Really, be careful even if you jump from the pier into the water at the beach. Some are just such A-holes and deliberately throw everything from bicycles into the water at the end of the pier. I was there myself when a young boy got a big wound because of this at a popular beach.
Homelessness.
So many people want to seem like they care, but nobody wants to face the grim fact that **hundreds, if not thousands, of people in America freeze to death on the streets in the winter.**
People are homeless for a variety of reasons; myself, I was getting away from abusers and had nowhere to go. I never got into hard drugs, but I easily could have, and many people do. That’s the thing—drug abuse usually doesn’t cause homelessness; homelessness consistently causes drug abuse.) And in that time I met people who became homeless due to disability, the death of a partner, the death of a parent, medical expenses from cancer treatments—and maybe literally 3-5 people who became homeless because of their drug habit, but they were VERY MUCH SO in the minority.
When homeless it's very easy to drink or take drugs to block out what you are dealing with. I stuck with cannabis when I was homeless, but I could easily have taken something stronger. I did once try crack but really didn't like the come down so never did it again.
Thank You!!!! I too was homeless due to a series of events I couldn't control....I was embarrassed and ashamed as it was....the looks the assumptions the accusations.....it hurt!
I feel so bad for the people that have that happen to them in their lives as the other day we saw a homeless guy sat in the snow outside and we got him a blanket and some food.
Because anyone believes that being homeless is a good way to live??? Who thinks that?
In 1970 the governor of California closed nearly all state's the outpatient mental health facilities, saying they were a waste of money and that the private sector would fill the gap. They kept the few that were little more than prisons. The private sector did open a few rehab clinics funded by insurance companies but little else, there being no profit in it. It's now estimated that the cost in medical care, crime, etc. costs about $30k per houseless person per year. Of course it ruined his political career. I forget his name, something like Runny Radon... some has-been actor who never amounted to anything.
Food for thought: There are more vacant houses in the US than there are homeless people
i get so f**king angry when i think about the people that make "homeless-proof" architecture. why. just why. is my existence an eyesore for you? well it was YOUR system that screwed me over so get over it.
And no matter where you live in the city homeless people are in your neighborhood, so stopping construction of a place where they can go makes no sense.
Load More Replies...I feel like we (USA) needs our mental institutions back - just without the abuse of decades ago. Many chronic homeless can not make it on their own. But in our current system they do not get mental health treatment unless they are "a danger to themselves or others". So they are stuck in a tent in the woods, often self medicating, until they do something stupid that lands them in jail..
In my area (Greater Seattle) there are a lot of homeless people who have just been priced out of the housing market. The sad thing is the way that some of the leading voices in my town that are trying to drive the homeless away are the same rental owners who priced these people out of a place to live.
Just like I commented this week on a Facebook friend's post when you're homeless you find out who your true family and friends are
Child birth. Oddly enough still somewhat dangerous. Obviously much safer than it used to be, but there can be pretty serious complications. People seem to think its totally risk free these days.
Safer than it used to be, depending on where you live. In the developed world, sure. In Somalia or Yemen? Not so much.
...and I'm guessing in America if you're poor. I heard it cost like 20k in medical bill in the US - what happens if you can't afford that and don't have insurance cover, do you get limited care or just a huge debt? ...if it's the latter then I can see people going through it without medical help, hence it's dangerous again.

New international data show the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. continues to exceed the rate in other high-income countries. In 2020, the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. was 24 deaths per 100,000 live births — more than three times the rate in most other high-income countries
I sometimes wonder if this is because of the popularity of home births in the US (possibly to avoid medical bills?).

It is set up for the comfort and ease of the medical personnel, not the person giving birth. WHY don't we use gravity? Because it's easier to have the patient horizontal - not safer - easier. We are an invalid species people. We are born three months before we should be because we are too weak to carry a baby to full term. We would die. We like the taste of poison and food that is healthful tastes terrible. Whatever alien middle school student who made us as a science project did a S****Y job.
True story. A lot of nurses and doctors freak out if you want to squat or be on all fours for delivery. Nevermind that it actually increases the pelvic opening by 33% and greatly reduces the risk of tears and tailbone fractures.

My oldest daughter had serious complications on last two (of four) kids. She got 'fixed' because if she gets pregnant again she might die. Modern medicine is great. In her last birth, it likely saved her life. I think in "olden times" she would have died. So there's that. But yes to child birth is not risk free even with modern medicine.
According to the CDC’s data from 2020, the leading causes of death in the United States include heart disease (696,962 deaths), cancer (602,350), Covid-19 (350,831), accidents (200,955), stroke (160,264), and chronic lower respiratory diseases (152,657).
That year, Alzheimer’s disease claimed 134,242 lives. Diabetes killed 102,188 Americans, while influenza and pneumonia were responsible for the untimely death of 53,544 people. Nephritis (kidney inflammation), nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis also claimed the lives of 52,547 people.
Female heart attacks. We tend to feel pain from other places other than the chest. Never even realized it was a heart attack.
When I had my heart attack in November it was the last thing it never crossed my mind that was what was happening. I had pain in my back very similar to kidney stones, which I'm very prone to having plus I've had several back surgeries and including spinal fusion, except the pain was on both sides. I endured it off and on for over ten hours. It was only when I got to the point of not being able to stand up much less walk that I finally broke down and went to the hospital. By that time I was so dizzy and short of breath I couldn't sit up straight in a wheelchair. Only then, withy pulse pounding in my head, did I begin to think it could be cardiac related. No chest pain at all, no sweating, no nausea, no classic symptoms for hours. Back pain, which I endure every... Single... Day... Only difference was it being a bit more intense right out of the gate instead of a gradual buildup. Tl;dr-if your back hurts and it seems a bit different at all, go get checked ladies!
Thanks for telling us, hope you are relatively ok now?
Load More Replies...For me, it was pain and cramps in the jaw. I couldn't eat or drink. I did call my health provider and was put on hold. It was in the middle of the pandemic and the waiting time was between three and four hours. Two hours in I had back pain, nausea, and struggled with breathing. I hung up and called the emergency number. They sent an ambulance, and that was when I realized that it was worse than I thought. I barely made it, there were complications, and I was hospitalized for two months. No one ever told me that jaw pain can be a sign of a heart attack.
Don't know what it is like in America but in the UK a lot of women are not taken seriously with their health concerns. I've heard of women being sent home from hospital after being told they are having a panic attack and they are actually having a heart attack. Either women aren't taken seriously or doctor's don't know enough about women's health.
Unfortunately, I think this is way too common in all countries. I know in the US, if you are a black woman, your health concerns tend to be taken even less seriously. In 2018 in Tampa, a 30 year old woman who had recently had a c-section, was found passed out and drooling. Ambulance came, told her mother she probably had too much to drink and that they could not afford an ambulance so they wouldn't take her. They were nice enough to carry her downstairs *sarcasm* and left. Her mother drove her to the hospital. It wasn't drunkenness, she was having a stroke. She died 5 days later.

They are family history of heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking. If you have two or more and are over 40 then you should see your doctor for a cardiovascular screening. I've worked in cardiology for 19 years and I cannot tell you how many lives we potentially save by screenings.

Chiropractors.
Although the exact number of deaths is unclear due to lack of documentation, it's estimated that at least 40 people per year (in the US) die from chiropractic manipulation.
Chiropractors are quacks. They make scientific claims (that all ailments stem from the spine and can be treated with manipulation) with zero evidence to back it up. I'm sure it can feel good and help relieve some issues but real medicine is evidence based, and to make the claims that they do without the research to back it up is dangerous and unscientific. Chiropractors are NOT doctors!
I went to a chiropractor for a hip issue. In addition to my hip bones, he found tons of other things wrong with me that I had no idea about—because they weren’t true. He said he could fix a lot of these “issues” for just three sessions a week at $70 each for maybe six months, then after that maybe twice a week for another year and finally tapering down to once a week (forever…I guess). Nope. Went to orthopedic doctor who couldn’t see any evidence of the things he was talking about (and she fixed my hip fairly easily because it turned out not to even be a bone problem).
There are more than 68,000 chiropractors in the US. 40 ppl per year dying seems... a bit underwhelming
I know it sounds underwhelming, but thats 40 too many.

Globally, the leading causes of death are cardiovascular diseases while cancers are in second place. High blood pressure, smoking, obesity, high blood sugar, and air pollution are also to blame for many health problems.
However, the causes of death can vary quite significantly from country to country. Broadly speaking, non-communicable diseases cause the most harm in rich countries. Meanwhile, infectious diseases are the most dangerous in lower-income countries, according to ‘Our World in Data.’ This is slowly changing, and fewer people are dying due to infectious diseases, but more are losing their lives because of non-communicable ones.

Loneliness.
I have been here and in all seriousness, you can’t understand it unless you’ve been here? Without getting into the boring background of it all one day through just a myriad of mistakes you just find yourself alone (and penniless, definitely a contributing factor), making a phone call to someone you barely know (because there literally is no one else), who’s roommate is inexplicably angry with you because they are convinced you want their boyfriend (drugs do funny things) because they’re literally the only ‘friends’ you can think of where you are and your family is 9 hours away. To this day my heart still aches when I think of sobbing into the phone to someone I barely knew how I was just so lonely. 3 months later I moved back home and have been on the upswing ever since! Today my life is so blessed…. sometimes you just have to realize someone or something is trying to tell you something: in this case, it was get the hell out of there.
Except if you hate other people and enjoy being lonely. Then it's a blessing.
when you're alone you get depressed and you do stupid s**t and since you think about yourself a lot cause there's no one else to think about you start to hate yourself so it really is a perfect storm for self destructive behavior. i know because i've been there. i still am there honestly

Air pollution from fossil fuel burning & heavy industry, mostly in China & India. The number of premature deaths from air pollution is estimated at 6 - 7 million per year. Put another way, fossil fuels cause more deaths every 2 - 3 weeks than nuclear power has in its entire history even if you do the completely dishonest thing of including Hiroshima & Nagasaki in that total.
Americans and Europeans need to wake up to the fact that they put pollution controls and essentially prohibit manufacturing, manufacturers just go to China which has far fewer protections. This at least made sense when the chief issue was the local effects of pollution near the sources. But with carbon dioxide, we're shipping material to China to use AT LEAST as much carbon in manufacturing the end product and them shipping it back. The only impact is we've given China all our money, China's made MORE pollution, and the shipping back and forth means still MORE pollution. Fortunately, after 50 years of hype, solar and wind are FINALLY becoming feasible alternatives to fossil fuels.
The West offsets all energy intensive and hight environmental impact activities to India and china and then targets these countries for polluting on the West's behalf. Western hypocrisy knows no bounds.
You're not wrong, but understand what's really happening: The U.S. establishes anti-pollution laws. China welcomes the polluters, and sells the products to the U.S. Then China infiltrates the media and pretty much any media watchdog you ever heard of to control American elections so they can continue to profit. India: not so much. India's exports to Western markets are much more meager; their economic ambitions are for the benefit of their own people, rather than gaining political leverage through balance of trade.
Load More Replies...Fortunately most parts of India are switching to renewable resources now. Not sure how much it'll work in the heavy industries sector, but seems like more and more people are shifting to self-owned small businesses post-pandemic, so maybe it'll work?
poverty adds to this: industrial plants are put where the poor cannot afford to fight their placement. The poor bear an outsized burden of industrial pollution: air. groundwater. waterways.
If you ever have a chance to watch a movie called pandoras promise you should, it is a bunch of research and information on using nuclear power. Nuclear plants are really good for the environment and safe (if the engineers know what they're doing)
Why did this suddenly swerve into talking about nuclear power in the last half??? Can't we all agree that pollution from fossil fuels ruins people's health, without setting up a false dichotomy with nuclear power? And if you were going to try and compare a dramatic difference, wouldn't it be the zero deaths caused by wind or solar, instead...?
Because nuclear is far more reliable than wind and solar could ever hope to be and the twats that think the world is going to end in about a decade keep wanting to ban it.

UTIs. They can EASILY turn into sepsis. My mother has nearly died twice from a UTI she had no symptoms of until she was septic. And she has lingering issues from the sepsis 5 years ago.
UTIs seem like no big deal but get your a*s to the doctor for antibiotics right away. They can kill you before you know it.
This happened to an older friend of mine. Pain Monday, Dr called in prescription on Wednesday only it never got called in. Called the office Friday afternoon and they told her she would have to wait until Monday. She was incoherent on Saturday. Husband took her to the ER, had sepsis, five days in intensivd care, three more in the hospital, two months to recover. She is lucky she didn't die.
Almost identical to what my 80 y.o. dad went through last year.

I used to take Pyridium. It is no longer available in Canada. Phenazopyridine is a medication which, when excreted by the kidneys into the urine, has a local analgesic effect on the urinary tract.
AND they made it unavailable in Canada almost the same day I needed that plus my antibiotics.
Load More Replies...Especially in the elderly, it can cause atypical symptoms like altered behaviour. In nursing homes, when elderly people start acting different, a urine culture is usually one of the first things they check since it's a good chance it's a UTI
I am prone to get frequent UTIs. My husband does not take it seriously, or understand the amount of discomfort I feel when I have one. Makes me feel de-valued.
I also am prone to UTI's I even had surgery on my bladder and urinary sphincter muscles at age 7 to try to correct it. I'm 45 now but I still get about 1 a year but it's better than one every two months. One thing that helps is keeping your urine dilute by drinking lots of water. It's gotta be water no teas sodas or juices. If your urine is yellow you're not drinking enough. Its not a cure but it does help.

Influenza. Just regular old flu. Many people ignore it thinking it'll go away on its own. Globally the number per year is usually between 300k and 500k. In the US it can be anywhere from 12k to 50k per year.
If only there was some kind of..... ah yes! A vaccine! That can reduce the severity of symptoms and prevent fatalities! Who woulda thunk it? I know the antivaxxers will come after me for this post but quite frankly, I don't give a hoot.
To be fair the 'flu vaccine is a bit of a lottery. Because 'flu mutates so quickly, there's no guarantee that the strain you get the jab for is the strain that'll do the rounds that winter; it's just the epidemiologists' best guess. But in general it's always better to vaccinate than not. And no, the 'flu vaccine doesn't give you 'flu; that's your immune system gearing up for a fight.

Anorexia has a higher death rate than depression. It has the highest death rate among all mental disorders
But sure, body image isn't a relevant problem, especially not in women... /s
I agree and could go on and on about body image - but I wanted to point out that not all anorexia is caused by poor body image. I learned from a friend that for many people it is a form of having extreme control over themselves when in all other aspects of their lives they feel like they have none. Example: she was a Mormon.

Load More Replies...Earlier post said a million people a day die from depression... this says even more die from anorexia... this whole thread is nothing but hyped up misinformation. "Did you know over a billion people a day die from (something)?"
Technically it's heart failure that kills anorexic people, as there is a layer of fat around the heart and when all other fat reserves are used up, the body will use the fat layer around the heart as the last resort.
Very true, but more people are affected by depression than anorexia so i'd say you can't really compare the two for that reason. Both should be taken just as seriously.
The closest I have come to Body dysmorphia (or forgive me if not the right term) is my brain still thinks it is driving a younger bus than what it really is. Like, I remember the me I am used to and my brain has not accepted that due to age my body is less strong / less coordinated than it used to be. And rationally I recognize this and it helps me to better understand people who perceive themselves differently than those around them perceive them.

20 million severe injuries each year and at least 200.000 death from consequences of the fall. Both my grandparents died because of a fall.
The guy in the picture is using stairs very unsafely. Should be three points of contact - both feet and one hand on the railing.
I recently broke my leg going downstairs doing laundry after slipping on some detergent that someone didn't clean up. First broken bone in my life. I also empathize with others in this post. Load More Replies...Yup. My old apartment manager died of mouth cancer. I didn't realize how bad he was until I had to carry him down to my van to take him to the VA hospital. He could no longer walk and weighed like nothing. It turned out I was taking him down there to die. But some time prior to that he told me how they had operated on him for mouth cancer (previously) and the doctor had told him he needed to stop drinking and smoking . He told me, "But that is what I do. I drink and smoke." And it was pretty much true. That's about all he did. So sad to see a life reduced like that. He could have probably lived a lot longer. He used to be a fighter jet pilot among other things. Ended up a sad old drunk in an old apartment building ticking off the days until he died.
A good friend of mine drank a lot - not an alcoholic, he just drank quite a bit on a regular basis, including a lot of beer. He gained a lot of weight over the years - a huge beer belly. After struggling with long covid for months, he quit drinking on his doctor's recommendation. I saw him a couple of months later and he was already looking a little slimmer. Hopefully, he'll never return to drinking as much again, and lose more weight. It was affecting his health in other ways, like his breathing. The huge weight gain was all due to the empty calories in what he was drinking.
My brother died from it before his 34th sol day and a year later I quit, may 4th 14, cold turkey and I drank an 18 pack of tall boys and a pint-gallon of whiskey a day. Worst Best day of my life. God was with me and I didn't die
I'm 71 and quit drinking and smoking 45 years ago. My twin brother is an alcoholic and chain-smoker. I haven't seen him in years, but every time he sends me a photo I can't help but think that he looks twenty years older than me. AND he's had multiple heart attacks and stents and flatlined at least three times. I have had none of these things. So nature vs nurture?
An alcoholic death is a terrible way to die. My brother in law died from acute, end-stage alcoholism. His skin and eyes were yellow from jaundice, he was losing hair, lost tons of weight, and developed wet brain (Wernicke-Korsakoff). He was in his 40's. Horrible, horrible disease.
Rough to watch someone die slowly infront of you. My brother was yellow green from head to toe and looked pregnant from all the fluid build up and blood coming out from everywhere. Less than 3 months and still drank until the end, sometimes that all you have left, addiction steal all your identity

Street fights.
You watch some Hollywood blockbusters and some MMA fights and you think you can do it too. I've seen stories of a guy minding his own business and gets rocked on the side of his head. It disconnected his spine and he was dead before he hit the ground. There was another story maybe a year ago of a scuffle where a guy was stabbed in the neck and bled out to the point of being unable to stand within 10 seconds. Stop f*****g around, it's not worth your life.
Anyone else remember when so many people were getting king-hit on the streets that they decided to bring in laws specifically surrounding one-punch attacks?
But still not enough school shootings to make stricter regulations on gun ownership (in the US, that is) (edited typo)

Agree. I was watching Marvel's Daredevil series and he is supposed to be such a good guy b/c he doesn't kill the people he beats the c**p out of - he tossed a guy off of a roof! How could he know that this wouldn't kill him!

And that's not counting if they crack their skull on the kerb when they land

I have seen the video of the guy who got stabbed in the neck (don't go searching for it; it's as unpleasant as it sounds). I can only imagine how horrible it must have been in that young man's last moments knowing with a terrifying finality that there's nothing that could be done to stop the bleeding. Such a senseless tragedy over someone's ego.
We have Coward punch or 1 punch laws in Australia. If you hit king hit or coward punch as they renamed it at the pub you will go to gaol
I have only been in fights two or three times in my life when forced to for self defense. I won. People fighting for fun or to flex or because 'drunk' are just stupid. If you can walk away - then walk away. EDIT to say that as soon as it was no longer self defense I walked away.
never, never fight another without proper training in a controlled area. i’m serious.
Am I the only one that sometimes gets the urge to get into a fight cuz u think u could beat someone up?(yes you are.)
I think that might be where you either take martial arts classes, where the sparring is controlled. Or, maybe go find a professional to talk this over with.

Odd fact I learned over New Years, Champagne corks [take out] more people that spiders on average every year. I think the yearly average is 34 deaths.

Because of the pressure in a champagne bottle, screw tops won’t work. Wine yes.

Falling in the bathroom, especially the shower.
Yes to this, I lost my aunt and uncle after they slipped in the bathroom
Fell in an 'over the bath' type shower - hit my ribs on the taps. It was excruciating. More painful than any other bone I've broken.
About 5 years ago I slipped in the tub and fell out, flat on my back. Sprained it, but once the pain went away, in about 6 weeks, I realized my life-long sciatica was gone, too. Hasn't come back. Who knew.
Ooh... Maybe I need to try this for my sciatica.

Tripping. On average around 17k people a year in the US die from injuries incurred after tripping and falling.
Particularly for older people. Working in aged care, I've seen relatively healthy and active older folks have a fall, break a hip and die within a few months.
yup. hip fractures can result in loss of mobility and then....pneumonia, the old person's friend.
Load More Replies...Hip fractures are often a pre-morbid event. Falling from a standing height and breaking a huge bone shows that you have lost muscle power, the ability to right yourself when off balance, loss of bone density. Add in bleeding from the bone (and usually subsequent surgery), then reduced mobility, a hospital stay and you're looking at up to 30% mortality within 1 year
Those wet floor signs. They get left in place long after the floor is dry. I joke that there should be signs warning about the wet floor signs because I trip of the things way more than I've ever slipped because the floor was wet.
People are so blissfully unaware how fragile the human body really is. Especially when you fall on your back. Our body is perfectly protected from falling on our face. Our whole skeleton is designed to protect us from dying if we fall forward. But we have no protection whatsoever if we fall backwards. And even just slipping and falling backwards can cause almost instant death from brain injuries or paralysis from breaking your neck. That's why the jump-challenge prank wasn't one bit funny. It was a horrible thing to do.
Older fatter me falls more often and harder than younger me. So far I've still managed to roll into it and survive with just bruises. I suspect one of these days it will end in a trip to ER or worse. EDIT: Mentally it is kind of tough because I have always been a stronger than normal (according to my friends) person and rarely ever bruise / heal quickly. So sucks to see that changing.
I've never thought about it before, but when you live in a country where the winters are snowy and icy, here people are really encouraged to learn to fall "correctly" in order to survive with as few injuries as possible. I must say that it is a skill worth learning.
Tetanus. Get your vax up to date, it's ugly.
Tbh it's very unlikely to catch tetanus, but if you do you're on the road to die in the most painfully, gruesome way. The spasms can get so intense that they break bones in your spine
But you can only catch tetanus in certain situations. You need an open wound and dirt contaminated or maybe contaminated with animal feces. So if you're into gardening, get vaccinated. Same if you plan a camping trip, regularly go hiking or climbing stuff like that. If you're no where near anything that could cause tetanus, like being a remote worker in the middle of a well developed town were every vegetable you ever eat is hosed down and clean, you still have 24 hours to get vaccinated and be perfectly safe in case you get injured in a situation that involves anything that could bring you in contact with dirt. And since the tetanus vaccination has some nasty side effects, it's worth the deliberation if you really need it.

Just got mine again now too! My foot had a very unpleasant meeting with a very long rusty nail 😭
Load More Replies...How do normal people go 10 whole years without needing a tetanus shot? I feel like I’m constantly getting cut with rusty metal and having to do the math if I need the shot or not…. Also, In the US the shot is mixed with diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine, so if you interact with any babies you should DEFINITELY get vaxxed, whooping cough can easily kill unvaccinated children and babies are too young for the vax.
TW// yeah so i used to do sh and i was lucky enough to have had a tetanus shot a couple years prior but this is just a reminder that it's not worth it and there is a better way. but yeah it was kind of scary realizing how narrowly i'd escaped. not taking questions but i wanted to remind whoever needs it that this is just a moment but death is forever
Thank you so much. I am overdue for my tetanus vax and just put on a note on my fridge so I don't forget to get this done ASAP. I know I can do a walk in to my doc's office or go to one of the local pharmacies so it's quick and convenient. No excuses.
My commanding officer in the reserves, a trauma Dr, told us about one of the rare cases of tetanus, which was in the hospital he worked in. The patient was kept on a ventilator and a curare drip. Basically, the guy was being dosed with a drug that causes paralysis, to keep his muscles from snapping his bones and otherwise destroying his body.
Tetanus used to be commonly known as lockjaw. It causes intense muscle spasms, is fatal, and a horrible way to die.

High Blood Pressure. It sneaks up on you and you don't know about it or don't care but its the underlying cause of so many deaths.
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a silent killer because it often has no symptoms. Untreated hypertension is the leading cause of cardiomyopathy which weakens your heart muscle. Over time the heart muscle dilates because it struggles to pump blood and has to work too hard. This can lead to fatal arrhythmia (irregular heart beats) and ultimately death. Get your blood pressure checked often and if a doctor prescribes medication take it!
Same with low blood pressure, which can actually be a symptom of a heart attack or stroke even though people usually associate those things with high blood pressure. If you have remarkably high or low blood pressure, it's a good idea to monitor yourself on a regular basis and if it gets too bad, go to the doctor immediately.
This is one of those things that people don't hear about enough. Every few years one of our local papers used to run an article on it. I had a heart event and apparently the standard treatment is to then put you on blood pressure medication. I have low to average blood pressure without the meds. I stopped taking them because they were causing all sorts of issues due to low blood pressure. My doctor didn't care. The standard treatment for a heart attack is to go on blood pressure medications so all my tiredness, headaches, etc. were unimportant.
Load More Replies...When I was in my late 30s, I started having weird symptoms: daily nausea and vomiting, headaches, blurred vision, nosebleeds, insomnia. I had no health insurance so I never went to the doctor. After vomiting for an entire weekend, my fiancé made me go to the clinic and they diagnosed me with hypertension. They gave me some meds but my pressure wouldn't come down. I went to a different clinic and they gave me IVs and tried to get my pressure down and it wouldn't come down. I got sent to the hospital and immediately put in ICU. They gave me meds to lower my BP (which was running around 250/180) but gave it too fast and I passed out. I didn't wake up for 5 days. They said I had had a stroke. When I woke up, I could read or write, didn't know the date and even what season it was. They told me my blood pressure had been astronomically high for years and I never knew. Please get your blood pressure checked!
Ladders. Ladders [take out] around 300 people/year in the US.
Do we really need "[take out]" as a euphemism for "KILL"? The word is KILL, BP, KILL. If you won't post it, we will!!
Are there people out there who think ladders aren't dangerous? I've never met any of those people.
We have a rule in our house, ladders only with company. Learned that the hard way.
I am *very* reluctant to do any kind of above head height work at home because I live on my own, and the only ladder I have is a wooden one that's older than I am.
Customer insisted my husband use a ladder on a dust sheet once. Of course it slipped and he hit his ribs on the corner of a washing machine and was in agony for weeks. He now tells any customer asking this that it breaks Health & Safety guidelines and refuses. He'll clean up any mess he makes but he's not putting a dust sheet under any ladders ever again.
If you're over 55, have a spotter for your own safety. If you're over 65- contract it out.
I'm sorry to ask... but why can not be use a normal expression instead if [take out]? I just can not find the logic in it. Please help!
People not properly maintaining their ladders, unless you have autonomous ladders.
Untreated infections. Your body will become septic, in which it essentially kills itself trying to kill off whatever infection one has.
My first thought is why would anyone ignore an infection? But I live in a country with Universal Health Care.
Even for those with health insurance, some people are still resistant to going to see a doctor. I think the reason differs from being scared of doctors to not thinking they are sick enough to go to a doctor, like feeling “weak” going or something. Being a parent is weird because I suddenly am in charge of (and apparently qualified to???) deciding how sick is sick enough to take my kid to a doctor versus what his normal immune system can handle. I’m sure I take him too much but I’d rather be on that side than not taking him when he really needs it. Idk, just doing my best. (Ps, open to advice on how people decide)

It does help manage type 2 diabetes by reducing cortisol levels and maintaining a healthy BMI can absolutely help control blood sugar levels and lower A1C levels. Diabetes is ultimately genetic. Even if you exercise every day and eat healthy you can still develop it later in life. It's the sand with heart disease.

Type 2 is being researched more and may have links to immune cell dysfunction, and how the body attacks its own cells. So it may also be an autoimmune disease. It may be prevented as far as the research goes, but the direct reason for both types of diabetes still remains unknown. Being overweight may increase your risk of diabetes, but it also increases risks of so many other diseases. Genetics has so much more to do with it.

Well, here we go. Not exactly a huge surprise but once upon a time I worked with a regional set of hospitals coordinating nationwide cause of death reports and statistics. - 80% of all organ donor tissues cannot be accepted due to safety concerns around organ recovery. - I won't say how much, but a surprisingly high percentage of successful organ donors are motorcyclists. - Cheerleading , particularly involving gymnastic/aerobatic actions is one of , if not the leading causes of death for young women under 18. - Football, is a major cause of CTE, and an unexpectedly large number of football and hockey players die in younger life. - Gunshot injuries and suicides are seasonal, something you can discern by way of the death-rate in provinces and territories where it is dark for long periods of winter, Seasonal Affective Disorder is no joke. Talk to your physician first but SAD can be treated with Vitamin D and getting as much sunlight exposure as possible.
Especially prevalent when the rider doesn't wear a helmet.
Load More Replies...Also there are special lights available to treat SAD. They are pretty cheap and you can get them on Amazon. You just have to use it about 20 minutes a day and it makes a big difference. SAD feels like depression but it is caused by the lack of sun in winter.. Light therapy can reverse it in just days.
I used to do cheerleading, and one of the girls in the team above me broke her hip trying to do the splits. She was 10. I was 7. Very toxic sport (at least the place I did it at), constantly pushing young children too far, encouraging pain to a concerning degree, and giving a lot of the girls serious body dysmorphia. They made a black girl put on pale makeup for performances, too.
Fun Fact: There have been more mass shootings in the US this year then there have been days. There's been at least 39 as of today, which is 1/26/23.
As someone who has been living with severe SAD for my entire adult life I can wholeheartedly concur. It's not just "winter blues".
Football, hockey, and cheerleading....did not expect those to be that serious, sure lots of injuries, but death?
I think Chicago would like to challenge the last claim on gunshots being seasonal. From 2013-2022, there were a reported 33,552 gunshots. There have already been 179 for 2023.
Medical malpractice. One hears about it, but one doesn't really hear that much about it. It's not reported in the media, there aren't any loud groups screeching about it all the time, but medical malpractice results in around 300,000 deaths per year in the U.S., according to the CDC. Compare this to all firearm related deaths, including suicide (which make up about half of all firearm deaths in the U.S.).
Got misdiagnosed several times by doctors and got told i need a psychiatrist for imagining my neck pain. Cervical spondylitis. Got diagnosed after almost 3 months of pain enough for me to be crying all day long, and not even walk up to 100 meters ahead of me. The last doctor i found was the only one who didn't dismiss me for being young and fat, and actually paid attention to me. He still treats me like his own daughter :)
Load More Replies...or worse, medical indifference. Docs can be in their own heads, and patients, especially women, can be ignored when it comes to advocating for their experience.
Unfortunately, doctors are humans and they must make mistakes too it’s just that their mistakes drastically alter or end lives. I don’t envy that responsibility and can’t imagine what that must feel like as a doctor. And I feel for the victims and their families. I imagine they feel anger and betrayal in addition to that debilitating grief. Awful. I see others posts about how it affected them and am so sorry people are going through that.
Also secondary effects from doctors lying to you. My mother's estate was not distributed how she wanted due to a doctor telling her she wasn't going to die. Even up to a Friday I took her to an appointment and heard the doctor tell her, "Your not going to die, this is just an inconvenience." She was dead before noon the next day. She and I had figure out she likely was going to die but due to the reassurances we thought we had longer. She didn't get some paperwork changed she would have changed. Possibly not "malpractice" but IMO it is. Doctor telling playing God and telling patient BS with (I assume) the belief they are somehow helping the patient by giving them a positive outlook. In the USA we pay good money for medical advice. Give us honest advice.
my husband died, not of the leukaemia that his got, but from the infection that one of the top research hospitals in the world gave him. When they put in the port for the meds, they succeeded in putting it in through an abscess, something they were told he was prone to. So, they just dumped all that mess straight into his heart. He never really came out of the hospital after that.
I got this one because it was one of the first facts I learned on reddit: a bottle of minced garlic past it's due date. Literally poison and an incredibly painful death.
Omg, I keep mine for months and months. Why isn't there a life or death warning?? Actually I call bs here
Yeah it's just a botulism risk. Your garlic isn't going to magically turn into poison.
Load More Replies...This is incorrect. Unless it's moldy (as noted above), the preservatives placed in bottled minced garlic do their job as long as the jar's stored in the fridge. https://www.charlotteobserver.com/living/food-drink/article9246218.html
? Same jar in the fridge for 2+ years and still use it occasionally, still kicking
Well that's great. But if that jar develops botulinum toxin, you won't know it until you die. So why risk it?
Load More Replies...Botulism bacteria is killed by heat. But if your garlic has visible mould, chuck it
But the toxin the bacteria produce is still present. Even if you've killed all the bacteria, the food can still kill you.

Forgetting kids inside cars.
There was an extremely sad case of this about 3 or 4 years ago in the UK. A parent (the mother, I think) parked her car with her child inside on a harbour slipway and the handbrake failed. They initially thought the car had been stolen and then realised what had happened. The poor child had drowned in the back seat.
I remember hearing about this as a child and worrying what I would do as parent to prevent this. I can be very spacy, distracted, etc. but somehow I never even came close to forgetting my baby in the car. I can’t quite wrap my head around how this happens but I’m sure it does and it must be so devastating for the parent. Not only are you dealing with the loss of a child which I can’t imagine but the guilt the parent must feel. I would not survive that. I admire anyone with the strength to do this. Ugh, I just feel sick thinking about it. ☹️
Read last summer of a dad who forgot he had his 14 month old baby with him - went to work as normal instead of taking the child to day care. Child died from the heat - happened in France on a day that was 22c. I've read of a few cases sadly. Another father shot himself after leaving his 18 month old in the car - I think you are right that it's something that would be nigh on impossible to live with.

Tylenol.
What's dangerous about Tylenol? It can cause side effects if you take too much but what's dangerous if you take the regular dose?
Tylenol is in lots of products that you may not realise. Say, for example, that you're feeling really groggy with the flu/a bad cold, so you take 2 Tylenol and have a powdered lemon drink from the pharmacy for your throat. Now you're already at double the recommended dose and don't even realise it. Then you snooze for a bit and wake up feeling awful, but you can't really remember when you took the last set of Tylenol and think "It can't hurt just to take some more" and then you maybe have another lemon drink. Now you're at 4 times the recommended dose, which is starting to get into danger territory. The liver damage caused by Tylenol doesn't make you feel bad immediately, so it is quite possible to fatally overdose and not realise for quite some time. By the time you seek medical treatment the liver is failing and it's too late.

If you drink too much water, you'll get electrolyte imbalances that can stop your heart. Also, if it's a habit over many years, you can stuff your kidneys and your heart. We aren't designed to drink 4 or 5 litres of fluid a day long tern
Load More Replies...Hyperhydrosis. If you drink a gallon of water in a short time it will kill you.
If you drink two gallons of water, it's deadly. It was a means of execution that I hope is a thing of the past.
You can actually overdose on water. As I understand it, your cells get oversaturated and dilute out all the essential salts and electrolytes they need to function, like sodium and potassium. And the dangerous part is, the symptoms look almost exactly the same as acute dehydration, so well-meaning treatment with fluids can exacerbate it.

Deer are responsible for about 200 deaths per year due to car accidents.
As a person from Mich., don't worry about the one you can see, worry about the cousin dashing out from the underbrush. They do some of the most inconvenient things.
I was taught that you do NOT swerve. If a deer is in the road you can stop if possible but if not you grip the wheel and hit it head on. You will total your car, the poor deer will die, but you are more likely to survive. Deaths from this are more likely when we swerve and roll our car or hit a tree as a result. It’s awful. I haven’t had it happen with a deer but I’ve hit a bird and cried my heart out. Absolutely devastated to kill a bird. Did not swerve through. I know many people who’ve hit a deer (very common where I was growing up, considered “an act of God” by insurance companies), but they were fine because they hit it head on.
Icicles.
Okay now I'm having phantom icy pangs in my esophagus. Thanks
Load More Replies...You would think this would be common sense, but I have seen several neighbors over the years, park their car, in the drive way, with icicles hanging. Have seen many smashed windshields in my time. My inclination is go over there and knock on the door to tell them, then instantly realize, it would be me, instead of a smashed windshield.
Diarrhea.
A neighbor of my mother had diarrhea. 84 years old, she was hospitalized. She died of… dehydration… in the hospital… Her children did not sue, but they could have.
Not going to the doctor regularly. We should have a plan like maintenance on a car. Regular oil change and checkups, at a certain mileage get the transmission checked, etc.
In Austria you have the right to one free general health checkup per year. It's a great concept!
America needs Universal Health Care for this very reason. An uninsured check up can cost $400.
That's...absolutely dreadful and probably unachievable for many people

In Germany from a certain age you can have regular health checks - of course, paid by public health system.
Working hard, it destroys you mentally and leaves you pretty stressed. So a lot of people rely on vices to forcefully unwind which leads into bad habits and makes it harder to keep up good habits.
My husband works two jobs and he’s stressed out a lot. He decided though that working more was less stressful than being home more with four kids and the chaos and unpredictability that comes with them. So I work 25 hours and take care of the kids/house/family 90% of the time and he works 50ish, but he insists he has the better deal.
Vending machines falling on top of them.
Statistically you're more likely to get a Twinkie out of a vending machine than out of a shark.

Luckily rabies has been eradicated here in the UK. A very nasty and incurable disease.
Also Australia, hence the uproar when Amber Turd tried to sneak her 2 dogs into Queensland on a private jet. NOT COOL YOU SELFISH BIATCH.
Load More Replies...ADHD Researchers have identified ADHD as a key risk factor in premature death among adults. A study published in The Lancet showed that people with ADHD have a lower life expectancy and are more than twice as likely to die prematurely as those without the disorder.
I wonder which possible aspects of adhd factor in.. impulsiveness, delayed sleep patterns, inattentiveness in risky situations?
All of the above, I suppose. Especially the inattentiveness.

Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.
Going to bed and never waking up is one example. Common amongst those with no existing health conditions, younger. You can just die for no reason.
Load More Replies...Adult version of SIDS. My dads a NICU doctor and it’s awful to hear about babies who just never woke up.
It's usually due to sudden cardiac death- likely due to an undiagnosed heart problem.
Tree wells. Stay safe skiers and boarders.
Tree wells are voids of loose snow under the branches of trees. Since this area is sheltered by the branches it doesn't get the same snow fall as the surrounding area so if a hiker steps under a tree to rest they can fall into this hole and become trapped and either suffocate or freeze to death.
Obesity-caused illnesses.
So many in the US want us to believe that this isn’t deadly or even treatable it’s ridiculous. Yes you should love yourself but you should also love yourself enough to want to take care of the only body you have to exist in.
Not staying hydrated. Being dehydrated literally ages your cells faster as well as allows for toxins to bundle up and expand in your body leading to disease. Drink water.
There is no such thing as "toxins" that build up in the body. The kidneys and liver filter the blood just fine. If those organs are diseased then the blood becomes toxic. There is also no such thing as toxins in the intestinal tract either. The colon normally handles toxic fecal matter in everyone. The closest thing to what alternative medicine claims to be "toxins" is an imbalance in the gut bacteria.
Not drinking enough water can put a lot of unnecessary strain on your liver and kidneys though, since what they need to filter is now a lot more concentrated.

Seizures.... According to WHO statistics, More people die from a seizure every year that die of breast cancer. It is the second leading neurological issue only to depression and 9/10 people in the world will have at least one seizure in their lifetime however very little is known or taught about a seizure and what is known or "taught" is not usually correct. 1) Not all seizures are "Grand Mall" and if you see someone have a Grand mall seizure never stick something in their mouth, this can in most cases cause more injury and more likely cause death than the person biting down on their own tongue. 2) any seizure can kill a person. it is an electrical storm in the brain causing a lack of oxygen to part or all of the brain. And Any seizure can cause permanent damage. 3) Most seizures are not drug induced and actually have no medical reason ever found to what caused the seizure to happen. Both causes of death are traumatic, however there are things that can be taught in every day life to lower the death percentage of seizure deaths.
Grand Mal I think is the correct spelling. Look it up

My grandmother has been sick for three weeks because my dumbass uncle brought his snotty grandchildren to visit her. "They don't have covid." Yeah, but she's 95 and weak, the common cold can kill her. I'm fuming every time I think of it.
Over 10 years ago, one of my most favorite people in the world was infected at her hundredth birthday by some idiot, who Showed up with a cold. she never recovered and died.
Load More Replies...There wouldn't need to be "lockdowns" if people would just either stay home or wear masks when they have a cold.
Have an upvote. It's the truth, and something the West can learn from Asian practices. If you are sick, you wear a mask to protect other people. Just basic respect
Load More Replies...Don’t understand the comment ‘funny no lockdowns For it ‘I think what you were trying to do is make light of Covid, but really not sure because that Seems like that would be encouraging a lot of other people to lose their grandparents as well…
I think OP means odd, like: “The common cold kills people. Odd there’s no quarantine measures.” Or OP is very frustrated and us trying to make a point that people think it’s no big deal because there isn’t an international push not to be a jerk and pass on Grandma’s BDay when you have a cold.

Well, any kind of hate-preaching ideology can lead to senseless violence...
Especially these days, transgender people are in the crosshairs of an awful lot of extremists. Safe havens are becoming disturbingly rare, even in countries that are historically the safest for them. It's quite sad.
What’s that? Is it like homophobia? Or something. Words r confusing.(no ur just stupid.)
It's like homophobia, but against transgender people. Hope that clears it up!

It's pretty much impossible to cure and health boards and govts. everywhere are avoiding talking about it and trying to keep it under the wraps. The addictive substance here is dihydrogen monoxide, which is totally lethal and withdrawal always causes death. There's a chance that you have this addiction already, and if you do, you're doomed. It has a 100% mortality rate, with no known survivors. It's a clear liquid that most people ingest by drinking. It has no scent. Because of lax laws around dihydrogen monoxide, it's often found in drinks and water supplies. Millions of children have been born addicted and have to be kept on this substance for their lives to avoid death from withdrawal. Dihydrogen monoxide awareness! Look this up for your own safety, I'm not an expert and Google should have some articles on it
The withdrawal is the leading cause, but overdose kill a lot a people too, that is no joke. And it's everywhere, the governments need to take it more seriously. Edit: Don't look this up, it can be truly gruesome.
