The uncomfortable truth that we all want to avoid is that someday, we’ll all die. However, until that moment comes, it’s up to us to ensure that our lives have purpose and meaning, that we leave behind a positive legacy, and that we get to enjoy as many awesome things as we can. The longer we live, the more time we have to do all of those fun things with great people. That’s why we take care of our health and avoid taking dumb risks.

However, when you sit down and think about it, there are far more risks to our health out there than many of us realize—and many of them aren’t all that apparent. Redditor u/adventure21mc started up a viral thread on the r/AskReddit online group, asking internet users about the things that cause death “more than people realize,” and many shared their thoughts. You’ll probably be more careful in the future, as you’ll never look at things like driving while sleepy and avoiding treating dental problems the same way again.

Keep in mind, though, that the purpose of this article isn’t to make you scared, simply to make you more aware of what reality can be like, without any frills. There is no such thing as being ‘perfectly safe.’ We can do our best to avoid many dangers, and we shouldn’t stop living our lives because we’re too frightened of getting hurt.

We reached out to redditor u/adventure21mc for a friendly chat about their viral thread, how to balance safety with living to the fullest, and how to make life feel more purposeful. The OP was kind enough to answer Bored Panda's questions. "I think my post resonated with many people due to them discovering that many common causes of death go unreported or underreported. While I did get a few responses I was expecting (alcoholism, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc.), I did not know stairs and tripping kill thousands of people every year," they said.

"In addition, what inspired me to make this post was the hundreds of thousands of people who die every year due to medical malpractice, which is a very common form of death that nevertheless goes underreported or ignored by society." Read on for the rest of our interview with the author of the thread.

This must be on top! Because it also causes other people to die for a totally stupid and selfish behavior.

My son in law's mother was killed instantly in a head on crash with his 9 year old sister in the car, who thankfully only had a broken arm, and the police said that they thought she may have been reading a text but they couldn't prove it. This has always terrified me with my own children and I stay on their backs about it, but especially so after we lost Pam. She was a very kind and hardworking woman, who worked her tail off to support her family. Her husband had been bickering at her through texts that day and they thought she had been reading one but couldn't prove it and her daughter had fallen asleep so she didn't know. It was a very sad and horrible situation. Her children are doing very well now though since their custody has been taken over by their older brother.

Hmmm they make s**t like " self driving cars ", " AI assisted braking ", " câmera assisted parking ", how hard would it be to get a câmera on the driver side of the car that detected if the driver was " playing " with their phone, and automaticly set the car in " limp mode " for a few hours?

Had a texting a*****e in a semi-size dump-truck blow through a 4-way stop and total my car (if I was about 5-ft. more into the intersection he would have killed me). Then when the cop arrived he LIED and said I ran the stop.......which the cop knew he was full of s**t since it took his truck 25 yards to stop (even with a blown tire) plus there were witnesses who saw everything. After I got my insurance payout I pulled some strings with some folks I know at the DMV who were able to get this a*****e's license suspended for a year AND he also had to pay some hefty-fines to get it back. If he wasn't a lying-a*****e and admitted he was at fault then he wouldn't have had to face all that s**t. Don't be an a*****e and F*****G HANG THE PHONE UP !!!!!!

They had an advertising campaign here in Australia where they played the last texts people sent before they died in an accident most were trivial things like "I'll be home soon" or "I'll get the milk". It was so powerful in driving the message home that most this c**p can wait until you see your loved ones. Don't text and drive

Here in the Uk it's been illegal to drive and text for a few years now. The fine isn't huge but the points on your license mount up until you are banned after 3 offences - less if you have recently passed your driving test (after which you have a 12 month driving ban, then have to retake your driving test ....)

"Mozzarella Sticks": 40 Life-Threatening Things That Are More Deadly Than Most People Think Covid. People don't take it seriously enough. They don't mask. They don't get vaccinated. One of my friends lost two members of her family at the same time from covid - and both of them were fairly young people, not old people. Covid can also mess you up. One of my family members has long covid, and she has been seriously damaged now for seven months. Sleeps 16 hours a day, has trouble eating, brain fog, weakness. Covid kills and it also cripples, and people pretend we aren't still in the middle of a pandemic. They act like it's no big deal. It's a big deal.

One of the things now being understood - COVID isn't just an infection in itself, but an activator. You caught something mild years ago and the virus has been living in you benignly since? Well, now it wants to try again. Multiply that by dozens of minor infections, and it can hit you like a truck.

This ... It sounds like me. I'm raising my grandsons, I have cancer, and another illness I'm just handling. They both have ADHD, my oldest grandson, is getting in trouble in school, because of his ADHD. I can't get his mom to sign off on letting me get him into a doctor to get on medication. He's driving his teacher crazy, and me. The youngest, is all over the place, all of the time. By the time I get to bed (youngest, I can't get him to bed until he's exhausted, 4am). By The time I clean the house from the day (I clean up toys, etc.. While their up. It's the sweeping,cetc.. I have to do). I don't get to bed until around 7-8 am. Get up around 12pm. I have to have 2 hours to wake up, before he gets up. So, I'm stressed, sick, and over tired all of the time.

I was on sickleave for almost 8 years because of mental breakdown caused by stress. Taken 11 years now of therapy, medications, doctor appointments of different kinds, youth organisations, counselling, various trial-and-error attempts (studies, work practice in various procentages) and are still not well enough to be counted as "normal". So yeh... take this s**t seriously!! Of course most people won't be as bad as me, but people should expect it to take YEARS for them to return to normal again. Because that's almost a guarantee when it hits you.

Some people can feel completely overwhelmed, anxious, and fearful for their safety after hearing about all the potential risks waiting for them just going about their daily lives. Bored Panda wanted to get redditor u/adventure21mc's opinion on how to live one's life to the fullest, while also staying safe.

"In my eyes, being alert and trusting your instincts is a good way to balance safety and living life well. While I don't think you should go through life being cynical about everything, having a backup plan and looking for potential warning signs in your life is a good way to avoid potential danger in death," they explained.

Depression can be a terminal illness. A body and mind are not separate from each other, when one is damaged or hurt it is manifested and felt in the other and if the mind is suffering and hurt then the effects are seen and felt physically and vice versa. I wish more people understood this and showed the same compassion and understanding to people suffering with mental health issues and illnesses as they do to those with visible so called physical illnesses x

Yes. I think people that haven't experienced it, or have only experienced a more minor bout of it just don't get how serious it is. There's such a fine line between "I'm depressed and struggling and need help", and "she committed suicide". There's not always a lot of steps between. There won't always be grand drama leading up to it. When someone says they need help, they need help now.

I agree. But I also feel so many now are shouting to the world about their varied mental health struggles without being diagnosed, or even ever seen, for whichever and whatever one they "have " this week. Doing so has created a situation where people take it less seriously because it is difficult to get anyone to actually believe you have an actual illness and you aren't like others who make it up for attention, excuses and "likes".

Sadly there is still a stigma attached to mental health disorders like depression, ADHD, and anxiety. People sometimes view you as weaker and more emotional when that is truly not the case. I really hope that in the near future there is more research done of mental health and more open discussion about it. So many people in the United States cannot seek therapy due to the astronomical costs. It is truly sad.

I would 100% go to medical testing to learn more about anxiety and depression. I want to know more of why they're almost always connected. I would totally participate in a study about that. It needs to be common knowledge of how terrible and crippling they can be.

This can be in fact a killer, i once was driving with " a eye Open and the other One closed " ( sleepy as hell ), i remember looking at my side Mirror to Change lanes, i Saw a green Ford Escort right behind me, and i still changed the Lane, dude on the Ford swerved hard to the left só he hitted my rear fender, and slammed his car entire left side in to the freeway guard rails, i imidiately woke up looked for a detour on the side of the road and parked there, waiting for him ( insurances here are mandatory and it was 100% my fault ) só dude parked the car behind me, gets out, and my 1st thought was " i didn't died in the accident, but Im gonna die now ... " Frikking OX of a man, Im a big guy, but compared to him i frikking was Olive Oil, dude was a frikking 1.90m tall body builder and he was pissed, luckelly i assumed my fault imidiately, took care of both our insurances, and in less than a week his car was in the shop, funny thing we ended up becoming " friends " dude was a bouncer in a night club, and i always got in for free lol.

The Tories wanted to make "driving while tired" illegal in the UK after a couple of serious lorry crashes. Which would have been totally untestable and unenforceable, and is the sort of s**t you come up with when a chauffeur drives you to work each morning.

Tories, go figure ..... next step backwards to legalising child prostitution and opium dens eh ? I've been in the sad position of having to work with / associate with some of these people and, pretty much to a man / woman, they are seriously, if not dangerously out of touch Bastards every one of them - especially Boris's progeny.

was 19. fell asleep at the wheel. woke up going full speed on a gravel shoulder, and wildly over-corrected, and crashed into a guy's yard. came to rest with a fence post through the windshield ....inches from my face. fatigue endangered me. Seat belt saved me. that post was in a spot that would have impacted my skull. My cousin fell asleep on the highway when i was 11ish. she hit a sleeping family, iirc. they were ok, but my cousin was gravely injured: compound fractures, internal bleeding, ruptured spleen, damaged organs. Super lucky to have lived through it. PULL OVER. and not just to the side: someone else might hit you. pull WAY off, exit, side road, anything.

What you're supposed to do is pull into the services, get a coffee and drink it then immediately go for a sleep. The coffee won't let you sleep too long and when you wake you benefit from a short sleep and a big caffeine injection. You should be safe to continue for another while..

The worst part of that is, sometimes you won't even feel tired - before you fall asleep. So always try to get proper rest, and avoid driving if possible if you tend to have big problems with sleep.

"Mozzarella Sticks": 40 Life-Threatening Things That Are More Deadly Than Most People Think I legitimately say smoking cigarettes. I watched my mom (lung cancer), dad (bladder cancer), both grandfathers (lung and throat cancer), one grandmother ( brain cancer) and an aunt ( throat cancer but never smoked, had lived with smokers since birth)die very slowly and very painfully from decades of smoking/exposure. I smoked for 20+ years, quit 8 years ago while I was still in my 30s, but I have 2 older sisters that smoke like crazy and I hate to say it, but I am starting to see the really bad signs I saw with my other family members who passed. If you smoke, it's going to [take you out]. Yeah, yeah, yeah.. you gotta die sometime, but do you really want it to be while you're gurgling words through a hole in your neck, begging for an extra push of morphine to dampen the pain as all your organs slowly fail? Just. Quit.

Even if it’s a quick illness, like my dad ( lung, spine and brain cancer) it’s a horrible end that erases any happy memories of that person for a long time

Most deaths are a “horrible end that erases any happy memory of that person for a long time”. Don’t think because folks don’t get smoking cancer that their deaths are any less fraught with dementia, senility, anger, childishness and agony. Thems the breaks.

My family were all smokers. I started when I went to college, not realising that I was seconhand smoker from childhood. I want to quit, tried several times but any stress I go straight back and truth is stress becomes berable. I feel benefits when Im not smoking but still I go back. It would be easier if nonsmokers understand that is not that easy to just quit, esspecially for people who didnt do this to themselves. I dont live in smoke aware country, I dont have support feom comunty, there is laws wich forbid smoking in bars and restaurants but noome contol that. Now, I will seek profesional help, there is a place where I dont have to pay until Im able to save money that I would spent on tobacco. It just os not easy amd every smoker would quit if it was that easy. Its emotinal cruch, its addiction, there is no benetfits, it stupid, its debilitating but I cant JUST QUIT.

Some studies show that quitting smoking is on the same level as quitting heroin. It's tough. I have smoked for over 20 years and have quit at least four times - just never "sticks" for more than a couple months. Quit drinking 2-1/2 years ago though.

A dental access can quickly lead to endocarditis. If left untreated this bacteria can attack the valves in your heart and when it gets to this point the only treatment is open heart surgery and valve replacements

Honestly as someone who lives in Canada with super bad periodontal disease that I can't treat because money....The best thing to do is save what little you have (I'm still saving) and if you get abscess/infection etc and your country has free healthcare, go to the ER. Happened to me two years ago. Don't leave a tooth infection untreated. The ER will give you antibiotics.

I see evidence of this all the time. Clients will come in to tell us their spouse died and the firm has the Will. Many many times the surviving spouse does not live very long after the first person passes. I think perhaps they give up the desire to survive. Particularly if they are elderly.

I think I have come close. I developed Atrial Fibrillation after years of dealing with my mother's estate (lots of farm land to sell) followed by having a very toxic relative living on my property for several years. At some point it 'broke' me. Afib, but also I used to be a go to person for people wanting me to sort drama because I could assess things and ignore the drama and bias. But at some point my capacity for "BS" broke. I find myself really avoiding it now and stressing out over things that didn't used to stress me. Now I just want to live under my rock and be left alone. And not mentioned but my mom wasn't my only grief. Over several years lost my mom, step dad of 40+ years, bio dad, grandmother, close friend, and best friend of 50+ years survived stage 4 cancer and now has alzheimers. And her daughter that is like my sister had cancer and 7 surgeries. Like.. JUST... MAKE... IT... STOP...!!!

I'm sorry you had to go through all that. You dont have to do it by yourself, though. Seek help if needed. Get involved with volunteering at a local church or any other meaningful thing that brings value to others without taking from you. Be a little selfish too and a little less empathic. You'll be fine. I started therapy, worked through the pain, worked on my issues, and learned to accept and let go. Today we are in contact and working on reconciliation. I really felt I was going to die because of the chronic pain from unbearable sadness.

The fact of the matter is that there are many things that we simply can’t control. And that’s a problem because human beings want certainty and routine in their lives. They help us feel safe and ensure that we can plan for the future. So when something unpredictable happens to us, we can feel disappointed, frustrated, lost, and even traumatized, depending on the severity of the event.

However, the last thing that we want to do is to run away from these uncomfortable feelings. Instead, we ought to try embracing the fact that life on Planet Earth can be unpredictable and uncertain at times. Not everything will go to plan. Bad things happen to good people. We’ll never be prepared for all bad outcomes.

So we’re left with doing the best that we can and letting go of the need to control what’s essentially uncontrollable. We can change how we react to what’s happening to us and can adjust our expectations. Meanwhile, embracing the chaos can, in turn, help us become more resilient.

The things that we can control include what we eat, how much we exercise and spend outdoors, whether we get enough sleep and practice good hygiene, as well as whether we have meaningful relationships with others, how we deal with stress, and what we do in our spare time. That's on top of being more aware of our surroundings (are you watching where you're going? Do you look both ways before crossing the street) and knowing the basics of what to do in case of an emergency.

"Mozzarella Sticks": 40 Life-Threatening Things That Are More Deadly Than Most People Think This is going to get buried since I’m answering so late in the game… Not a cause of death, but still extremely important info that I am constantly telling others about: suffering a spinal cord injury from diving into water. I’m a quadriplegic and run a nonprofit that works with people after they suffer a spinal cord injury. Other than car accidents, diving into water is the second most common cause for spinal cord injuries that we see. The worst part about it is that it is probably the most preventable cause. I’m constantly amazed that people will dive into water without knowing how deep it is, or even just jumping headfirst into an oncoming wave on the beach. If you are going to dive into the water, dive straight out, not down so that your head will potentially hit the bottom or a submerged object that you didn’t know was there. If you have kids, teach this PLEASE!

My friend's ex husband was at his best friend's house and they were drinking heavily. He dived into the pool and smacked his head on the bottom, even though he was an excellent swimmer and diver. Had a concussion and shortly thereafter developed seizures. Went on vacation with his new wife and was swimming in the ocean when she noticed he was floating face down on the waves. They got him back to the beach but he had drowned. Calm day and he had been swimming in the ocean since he was a kid. They believe he had a seizure while he was in the water.

When my Mom was around 20, she split her skull open diving off a waterfall with a bunch of friends. Luckily, my Dad had jumped in before her and was still in the water, so he was able to pull her out and drive her to the hospital before she bled to death. He said the top of her head was just a big skin flap down to the bone, and she soaked through 2 beach towels. I've done cliff diving at an old rock quarry before, but we swam in it first to make sure it was safe (water was well over 50 feet deep). Most waterfalls are super dangerous if you don't land in exactly the right spot.

Oh god. This is so true. My dad and his friend was traveling in Africa, and at some point they got in a boat to experience their rivers and streams and stuff. The water was quite cloudy and murky, and at some point, my Dad's friend got bored of just sitting and looking and the scenery, and declared he wanted to go and swim in those treacherous waters. He asked my Dad if he wanted to join him, but my Dad, who was the overly cautious one, and his friend the reckless, sparky one, declined, and urged his friend not to jump into the water. He had some sort of sense of impending doom. His friend laughed him off, and promptly jumped off the boat, head first. He didn't come back up for air. Panicked, my Dad and the African captain rushed into the water to save him, feet first, and found that the water was dangerously shallow, and that it was a faint shade of pink, from all the diluted blood. Now, there were crocodiles and dangerous animals in the river, so this risky rescue operation had to

be done swiftly and with remarkable presence of mind, since the scent of the diluted blood would attract predators that could attack. They fumbled around numbly and quickly in the waters, till their hands brushed against skin, whose could only be their friend's. After they found him, they quickly hurried him to the nearest hospital, and found that, thankfully, he wasn't dead, only unconscious. Yet, when the friend woke up, he found he was nearly totally paralyzed, and had to use a wheelchair, have a tube feeder, and could barely speak, eat, move, write, or anything at all. He was horribly lucid, which was a curse because he was aware of his awful disability, stuck inside a motionless husk, unable to move, to do anything, except to think in the quietude of his mind. It killed him two years after that, it was the stress and pain and awful desperation, the ongoing depression he had, at the emptiness of life. It destroyed my Dad, and his face goes white whenever it is brought up, and we

I maybe could have been you. I was never a "professional" diver but I enjoyed high dives. Probably worse due to not having professional training. One day I jumped from a high dive and my neck sort of snapped the wrong way. I shook it off and just had a sore neck for a few days (lucky me) but it was a wake up call and suddenly diving was not so fun. I have since done cliff diving but I didn't "dive". I went feet first and sort of cannon balled. Most of us are born young and immortal and then over time we realize that our meat sacks are actually rather fragile.

I have a large swimming hole near where I currently live where people can jump off a rock-face into the water below. However, this all depends on the level of the water. I see more and more children, teens and young people jumping of the rock face when the water level is too low. Furthermore, more and more people are bringing alcohol with them to this swimming hole; drinking and water is a dangerous and idiotic combination. There have been deaths due to broken necks yet people still do it. The rangers put signs up, however, people still disobey them. Many people severely underestimate their abilities when it comes to water.

Really, be careful even if you jump from the pier into the water at the beach. Some are just such A-holes and deliberately throw everything from bicycles into the water at the end of the pier. I was there myself when a young boy got a big wound because of this at a popular beach.

"Mozzarella Sticks": 40 Life-Threatening Things That Are More Deadly Than Most People Think Homelessness. So many people want to seem like they care, but nobody wants to face the grim fact that **hundreds, if not thousands, of people in America freeze to death on the streets in the winter.** People are homeless for a variety of reasons; myself, I was getting away from abusers and had nowhere to go. I never got into hard drugs, but I easily could have, and many people do. That’s the thing—drug abuse usually doesn’t cause homelessness; homelessness consistently causes drug abuse.) And in that time I met people who became homeless due to disability, the death of a partner, the death of a parent, medical expenses from cancer treatments—and maybe literally 3-5 people who became homeless because of their drug habit, but they were VERY MUCH SO in the minority.

When homeless it's very easy to drink or take drugs to block out what you are dealing with. I stuck with cannabis when I was homeless, but I could easily have taken something stronger. I did once try crack but really didn't like the come down so never did it again.

In 1970 the governor of California closed nearly all state's the outpatient mental health facilities, saying they were a waste of money and that the private sector would fill the gap. They kept the few that were little more than prisons. The private sector did open a few rehab clinics funded by insurance companies but little else, there being no profit in it. It's now estimated that the cost in medical care, crime, etc. costs about $30k per houseless person per year. Of course it ruined his political career. I forget his name, something like Runny Radon... some has-been actor who never amounted to anything.

I feel like we (USA) needs our mental institutions back - just without the abuse of decades ago. Many chronic homeless can not make it on their own. But in our current system they do not get mental health treatment unless they are "a danger to themselves or others". So they are stuck in a tent in the woods, often self medicating, until they do something stupid that lands them in jail..

In my area (Greater Seattle) there are a lot of homeless people who have just been priced out of the housing market. The sad thing is the way that some of the leading voices in my town that are trying to drive the homeless away are the same rental owners who priced these people out of a place to live.

...and I'm guessing in America if you're poor. I heard it cost like 20k in medical bill in the US - what happens if you can't afford that and don't have insurance cover, do you get limited care or just a huge debt? ...if it's the latter then I can see people going through it without medical help, hence it's dangerous again.

It is set up for the comfort and ease of the medical personnel, not the person giving birth. WHY don't we use gravity? Because it's easier to have the patient horizontal - not safer - easier. We are an invalid species people. We are born three months before we should be because we are too weak to carry a baby to full term. We would die. We like the taste of poison and food that is healthful tastes terrible. Whatever alien middle school student who made us as a science project did a S****Y job.

True story. A lot of nurses and doctors freak out if you want to squat or be on all fours for delivery. Nevermind that it actually increases the pelvic opening by 33% and greatly reduces the risk of tears and tailbone fractures.

My oldest daughter had serious complications on last two (of four) kids. She got 'fixed' because if she gets pregnant again she might die. Modern medicine is great. In her last birth, it likely saved her life. I think in "olden times" she would have died. So there's that. But yes to child birth is not risk free even with modern medicine.

When I had my heart attack in November it was the last thing it never crossed my mind that was what was happening. I had pain in my back very similar to kidney stones, which I'm very prone to having plus I've had several back surgeries and including spinal fusion, except the pain was on both sides. I endured it off and on for over ten hours. It was only when I got to the point of not being able to stand up much less walk that I finally broke down and went to the hospital. By that time I was so dizzy and short of breath I couldn't sit up straight in a wheelchair. Only then, withy pulse pounding in my head, did I begin to think it could be cardiac related. No chest pain at all, no sweating, no nausea, no classic symptoms for hours. Back pain, which I endure every... Single... Day... Only difference was it being a bit more intense right out of the gate instead of a gradual buildup. Tl;dr-if your back hurts and it seems a bit different at all, go get checked ladies!

For me, it was pain and cramps in the jaw. I couldn't eat or drink. I did call my health provider and was put on hold. It was in the middle of the pandemic and the waiting time was between three and four hours. Two hours in I had back pain, nausea, and struggled with breathing. I hung up and called the emergency number. They sent an ambulance, and that was when I realized that it was worse than I thought. I barely made it, there were complications, and I was hospitalized for two months. No one ever told me that jaw pain can be a sign of a heart attack.

Don't know what it is like in America but in the UK a lot of women are not taken seriously with their health concerns. I've heard of women being sent home from hospital after being told they are having a panic attack and they are actually having a heart attack. Either women aren't taken seriously or doctor's don't know enough about women's health.

Unfortunately, I think this is way too common in all countries. I know in the US, if you are a black woman, your health concerns tend to be taken even less seriously. In 2018 in Tampa, a 30 year old woman who had recently had a c-section, was found passed out and drooling. Ambulance came, told her mother she probably had too much to drink and that they could not afford an ambulance so they wouldn't take her. They were nice enough to carry her downstairs *sarcasm* and left. Her mother drove her to the hospital. It wasn't drunkenness, she was having a stroke. She died 5 days later.

More woman than men have silent heart attacks that means no pain or often any typical symptoms. Know your risk factors. They are family history of heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking. If you have two or more and are over 40 then you should see your doctor for a cardiovascular screening. I've worked in cardiology for 19 years and I cannot tell you how many lives we potentially save by screenings.

Chiropractors are quacks. They make scientific claims (that all ailments stem from the spine and can be treated with manipulation) with zero evidence to back it up. I'm sure it can feel good and help relieve some issues but real medicine is evidence based, and to make the claims that they do without the research to back it up is dangerous and unscientific. Chiropractors are NOT doctors!

I went to a chiropractor for a hip issue. In addition to my hip bones, he found tons of other things wrong with me that I had no idea about—because they weren’t true. He said he could fix a lot of these “issues” for just three sessions a week at $70 each for maybe six months, then after that maybe twice a week for another year and finally tapering down to once a week (forever…I guess). Nope. Went to orthopedic doctor who couldn’t see any evidence of the things he was talking about (and she fixed my hip fairly easily because it turned out not to even be a bone problem).

I think this is what happened to Kevin Sorbo when he was still doing the Hercules tv show. IIRC he usually didn't get his neck cracked and the chiropractor did it anyway and it cause a blood clot from his shoulder to go into his brain or maybe into his shoulder? I don't remember exactly but it really impacted his ability to work on the show. He eventually came back full time but it really impacted his life at the time.

Globally, the leading causes of death are cardiovascular diseases while cancers are in second place. High blood pressure, smoking, obesity, high blood sugar, and air pollution are also to blame for many health problems.

However, the causes of death can vary quite significantly from country to country. Broadly speaking, non-communicable diseases cause the most harm in rich countries. Meanwhile, infectious diseases are the most dangerous in lower-income countries, according to ‘Our World in Data.’ This is slowly changing, and fewer people are dying due to infectious diseases, but more are losing their lives because of non-communicable ones.

Reminder that if you're choking to go ahead and make a scene so somebody can save you! Many people who choke to death are found in the bathroom because they were too embarassed to cause a scene and run to the bathroom to try to deal with it themselves. Seriously, stand up and slam your hand on the table to get people to look at you because if you're truly choking you won't be able to make a sound

I stopped putting mozzy in my omelettes, it's such a super stretchy cheese. I switched to 2% cheddar. It helps to take small bites, more easier to dislodge should the unfortunate incident occur.

I have been here and in all seriousness, you can’t understand it unless you’ve been here? Without getting into the boring background of it all one day through just a myriad of mistakes you just find yourself alone (and penniless, definitely a contributing factor), making a phone call to someone you barely know (because there literally is no one else), who’s roommate is inexplicably angry with you because they are convinced you want their boyfriend (drugs do funny things) because they’re literally the only ‘friends’ you can think of where you are and your family is 9 hours away. To this day my heart still aches when I think of sobbing into the phone to someone I barely knew how I was just so lonely. 3 months later I moved back home and have been on the upswing ever since! Today my life is so blessed…. sometimes you just have to realize someone or something is trying to tell you something: in this case, it was get the hell out of there.

"Mozzarella Sticks": 40 Life-Threatening Things That Are More Deadly Than Most People Think Air pollution from fossil fuel burning & heavy industry, mostly in China & India. The number of premature deaths from air pollution is estimated at 6 - 7 million per year. Put another way, fossil fuels cause more deaths every 2 - 3 weeks than nuclear power has in its entire history even if you do the completely dishonest thing of including Hiroshima & Nagasaki in that total.

Americans and Europeans need to wake up to the fact that they put pollution controls and essentially prohibit manufacturing, manufacturers just go to China which has far fewer protections. This at least made sense when the chief issue was the local effects of pollution near the sources. But with carbon dioxide, we're shipping material to China to use AT LEAST as much carbon in manufacturing the end product and them shipping it back. The only impact is we've given China all our money, China's made MORE pollution, and the shipping back and forth means still MORE pollution. Fortunately, after 50 years of hype, solar and wind are FINALLY becoming feasible alternatives to fossil fuels.

You're not wrong, but understand what's really happening: The U.S. establishes anti-pollution laws. China welcomes the polluters, and sells the products to the U.S. Then China infiltrates the media and pretty much any media watchdog you ever heard of to control American elections so they can continue to profit. India: not so much. India's exports to Western markets are much more meager; their economic ambitions are for the benefit of their own people, rather than gaining political leverage through balance of trade.

Why did this suddenly swerve into talking about nuclear power in the last half??? Can't we all agree that pollution from fossil fuels ruins people's health, without setting up a false dichotomy with nuclear power? And if you were going to try and compare a dramatic difference, wouldn't it be the zero deaths caused by wind or solar, instead...?

I also am prone to UTI's I even had surgery on my bladder and urinary sphincter muscles at age 7 to try to correct it. I'm 45 now but I still get about 1 a year but it's better than one every two months. One thing that helps is keeping your urine dilute by drinking lots of water. It's gotta be water no teas sodas or juices. If your urine is yellow you're not drinking enough. Its not a cure but it does help.

To be fair the 'flu vaccine is a bit of a lottery. Because 'flu mutates so quickly, there's no guarantee that the strain you get the jab for is the strain that'll do the rounds that winter; it's just the epidemiologists' best guess. But in general it's always better to vaccinate than not. And no, the 'flu vaccine doesn't give you 'flu; that's your immune system gearing up for a fight.

Technically it's heart failure that kills anorexic people, as there is a layer of fat around the heart and when all other fat reserves are used up, the body will use the fat layer around the heart as the last resort.

The closest I have come to Body dysmorphia (or forgive me if not the right term) is my brain still thinks it is driving a younger bus than what it really is. Like, I remember the me I am used to and my brain has not accepted that due to age my body is less strong / less coordinated than it used to be. And rationally I recognize this and it helps me to better understand people who perceive themselves differently than those around them perceive them.

Hold my beer makes for some amusing Darwin award articles but sad when it is someone you know. I currently have a relative who is not dead but is facing some felony charges for some very bad stupid decisions. They are smart and not a bad person but made some very bad decisions / followed the lead of another and did some very stupid things they should not have done.

Same. I still can't use lefty scissors. I learned to steady the cut with my dominate hand and cut with my right. Right hand stays immobile to let the left do all the precision work.

Especially knives and scissors! You probably never knew this if you're dextral, but most knives have a bias towards the right for ease of cutting. Sinistrals like me often seem clumsy with this kind of blade!

Not just liver failure. Oesophageal cancer, kidney faliure, heart disease...all sorts of nasties. And trying to quit drinking cold turkey can cause hallucinations, seizures and even cardiac arrest - never, ever try it! Cold turkey is for opiates only (opiate withdrawal hurts like f**k but isn't actually dangerous).

I had a friend die of this two years ago. She was an alcoholic, quit cold turkey, had seizures and died. I had a ex-boyfriend who kept drinking (as I was afraid to ask him to stop cold turkey after my friend died) who developed liver problems at 35, and almost bled out from throwing up blood from something called varicies

Yup. My old apartment manager died of mouth cancer. I didn't realize how bad he was until I had to carry him down to my van to take him to the VA hospital. He could no longer walk and weighed like nothing. It turned out I was taking him down there to die. But some time prior to that he told me how they had operated on him for mouth cancer (previously) and the doctor had told him he needed to stop drinking and smoking . He told me, "But that is what I do. I drink and smoke." And it was pretty much true. That's about all he did. So sad to see a life reduced like that. He could have probably lived a lot longer. He used to be a fighter jet pilot among other things. Ended up a sad old drunk in an old apartment building ticking off the days until he died.

A good friend of mine drank a lot - not an alcoholic, he just drank quite a bit on a regular basis, including a lot of beer. He gained a lot of weight over the years - a huge beer belly. After struggling with long covid for months, he quit drinking on his doctor's recommendation. I saw him a couple of months later and he was already looking a little slimmer. Hopefully, he'll never return to drinking as much again, and lose more weight. It was affecting his health in other ways, like his breathing. The huge weight gain was all due to the empty calories in what he was drinking.

I haven't seen him in years, but every time he sends me a photo I can't help but think that he looks twenty years older than me. AND he's had multiple heart attacks and stents and flatlined at least three times. I have had none of these things. So nature vs nurture?

An alcoholic death is a terrible way to die. My brother in law died from acute, end-stage alcoholism. His skin and eyes were yellow from jaundice, he was losing hair, lost tons of weight, and developed wet brain (Wernicke-Korsakoff). He was in his 40's. Horrible, horrible disease.

Rough to watch someone die slowly infront of you. My brother was yellow green from head to toe and looked pregnant from all the fluid build up and blood coming out from everywhere. Less than 3 months and still drank until the end, sometimes that all you have left, addiction steal all your identity

"Mozzarella Sticks": 40 Life-Threatening Things That Are More Deadly Than Most People Think Street fights. You watch some Hollywood blockbusters and some MMA fights and you think you can do it too. I've seen stories of a guy minding his own business and gets rocked on the side of his head. It disconnected his spine and he was dead before he hit the ground. There was another story maybe a year ago of a scuffle where a guy was stabbed in the neck and bled out to the point of being unable to stand within 10 seconds. Stop f*****g around, it's not worth your life.

I blame the movies for showing people recovering so easily after being knocked out -sometimes more than once. that’s brain damage folks , at the very least Don’t hit anybody with a bottle in a bar fight don’t hit anybody with a shovel don’t hit anybody with a rock just don’t hit people with stuff and then you probably won’t kill them accidentally

Killing a person with a punch is incredibly easy, a lot of people ser movies and thing that a fight is like in the movies where the other guy falls, and doesn't want to fight any more, you Land a punch or a Kick in the wrong way, and you can kill a person.

I have seen the video of the guy who got stabbed in the neck (don't go searching for it; it's as unpleasant as it sounds). I can only imagine how horrible it must have been in that young man's last moments knowing with a terrifying finality that there's nothing that could be done to stop the bleeding. I think it's time to switch to screw top bottles. They're more effective at protecting the wine/sparkling wine (i.e. Champagne), but the producers won't switch because there's this public perception that a wine with a screw top cap is lower quality.

Hip fractures are often a pre-morbid event. Falling from a standing height and breaking a huge bone shows that you have lost muscle power, the ability to right yourself when off balance, loss of bone density. Add in bleeding from the bone (and usually subsequent surgery), then reduced mobility, a hospital stay and you're looking at up to 30% mortality within 1 year

People are so blissfully unaware how fragile the human body really is. Especially when you fall on your back. Our body is perfectly protected from falling on our face. Our whole skeleton is designed to protect us from dying if we fall forward. But we have no protection whatsoever if we fall backwards. And even just slipping and falling backwards can cause almost instant death from brain injuries or paralysis from breaking your neck. That's why the jump-challenge prank wasn't one bit funny. Older fatter me falls more often and harder than younger me. So far I've still managed to roll into it and survive with just bruises. I suspect one of these days it will end in a trip to ER or worse. EDIT: Mentally it is kind of tough because I have always been a stronger than normal (according to my friends) person and rarely ever bruise / heal quickly. So sucks to see that changing.

I've never thought about it before, but when you live in a country where the winters are snowy and icy, here people are really encouraged to learn to fall "correctly" in order to survive with as few injuries as possible. I must say that it is a skill worth learning.

Tbh it's very unlikely to catch tetanus, but if you do you're on the road to die in the most painfully, gruesome way. The spasms can get so intense that they break bones in your spine

But you can only catch tetanus in certain situations. You need an open wound and dirt contaminated or maybe contaminated with animal feces. So if you're into gardening, get vaccinated. Same if you plan a camping trip, regularly go hiking or climbing stuff like that. If you're no where near anything that could cause tetanus, like being a remote worker in the middle of a well developed town were every vegetable you ever eat is hosed down and clean, you still have 24 hours to get vaccinated and be perfectly safe in case you get injured in a situation that involves anything that could bring you in contact with dirt. And since the tetanus vaccination has some nasty side effects, it's worth the deliberation if you really need it.

How do normal people go 10 whole years without needing a tetanus shot? I feel like I’m constantly getting cut with rusty metal and having to do the math if I need the shot or not…. Also, In the US the shot is mixed with diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine, so if you interact with any babies you should DEFINITELY get vaxxed, whooping cough can easily kill unvaccinated children and babies are too young for the vax.

My commanding officer in the reserves, a trauma Dr, told us about one of the rare cases of tetanus, which was in the hospital he worked in. The patient was kept on a ventilator and a curare drip. Basically, the guy was being dosed with a drug that causes paralysis, to keep his muscles from snapping his bones and otherwise destroying his body.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a silent killer because it often has no symptoms. Untreated hypertension is the leading cause of cardiomyopathy which weakens your heart muscle. Over time the heart muscle dilates because it struggles to pump blood and has to work too hard. This can lead to fatal arrhythmia (irregular heart beats) and ultimately death. Get your blood pressure checked often and if a doctor prescribes medication take it!

Same with low blood pressure, which can actually be a symptom of a heart attack or stroke even though people usually associate those things with high blood pressure. If you have remarkably high or low blood pressure, it's a good idea to monitor yourself on a regular basis and if it gets too bad, go to the doctor immediately.

This is one of those things that people don't hear about enough. Every few years one of our local papers used to run an article on it. I had a heart event and apparently the standard treatment is to then put you on blood pressure medication. I have low to average blood pressure without the meds. I stopped taking them because they were causing all sorts of issues due to low blood pressure. My doctor didn't care. The standard treatment for a heart attack is to go on blood pressure medications so all my tiredness, headaches, etc. were unimportant.

When I was in my late 30s, I started having weird symptoms: daily nausea and vomiting, headaches, blurred vision, nosebleeds, insomnia. I had no health insurance so I never went to the doctor. After vomiting for an entire weekend, my fiancé made me go to the clinic and they diagnosed me with hypertension. They gave me some meds but my pressure wouldn't come down. I went to a different clinic and they gave me IVs and tried to get my pressure down and it wouldn't come down. I got sent to the hospital and immediately put in ICU. They gave me meds to lower my BP (which was running around 250/180) but gave it too fast and I passed out. I didn't wake up for 5 days. They said I had had a stroke. When I woke up, I could read or write, didn't know the date and even what season it was. They told me my blood pressure had been astronomically high for years and I never knew. Please get your blood pressure checked!

Even for those with health insurance, some people are still resistant to going to see a doctor. I think the reason differs from being scared of doctors to not thinking they are sick enough to go to a doctor, like feeling “weak” going or something. Being a parent is weird because I suddenly am in charge of (and apparently qualified to???) deciding how sick is sick enough to take my kid to a doctor versus what his normal immune system can handle. I’m sure I take him too much but I’d rather be on that side than not taking him when he really needs it. Idk, just doing my best. (Ps, open to advice on how people decide)

Justin Rodgers I'd really like to agree with you because diet and exercise are so very important but I cannot because it's just not accurate. It doesn't cure 95% of everything. It does help manage type 2 diabetes by reducing cortisol levels and maintaining a healthy BMI can absolutely help control blood sugar levels and lower A1C levels. Diabetes is ultimately genetic. Even if you exercise every day and eat healthy you can still develop it later in life. It's the sand with heart disease.

type one diabetes is unavoidable as far as I know. it's a freaking autoimmune disease. Type 2 is being researched more and may have links to immune cell dysfunction, and how the body attacks its own cells. So it may also be an autoimmune disease. It may be prevented as far as the research goes, but the direct reason for both types of diabetes still remains unknown. Being overweight may increase your risk of diabetes, but it also increases risks of so many other diseases. Genetics has so much more to do with it.

We just had a homeless man die recently near our town when the paramedics picked him up due to hallucinations from alcohol withdrawal. They put him on the stretcher on his stomach I believe because he was combative and he asphixiated (sp) on the way to the hosp. Apparently the paramedics knew better than to strap him in that way and I guess didn't think anyone would care and now they are both on the news being charged with negligent murder or something similar. All so sad and due to alcohol withdrawal.

Well, here we go. Not exactly a huge surprise but once upon a time I worked with a regional set of hospitals coordinating nationwide cause of death reports and statistics. - 80% of all organ donor tissues cannot be accepted due to safety concerns around organ recovery. - I won't say how much, but a surprisingly high percentage of successful organ donors are motorcyclists. - Cheerleading , particularly involving gymnastic/aerobatic actions is one of , if not the leading causes of death for young women under 18. - Football, is a major cause of CTE, and an unexpectedly large number of football and hockey players die in younger life. - Gunshot injuries and suicides are seasonal, something you can discern by way of the death-rate in provinces and territories where it is dark for long periods of winter, Seasonal Affective Disorder is no joke. Talk to your physician first but SAD can be treated with Vitamin D and getting as much sunlight exposure as possible.

Very toxic sport (at least the place I did it at), constantly pushing young children too far, encouraging pain to a concerning degree, and giving a lot of the girls serious body dysmorphia. Medical malpractice. One hears about it, but one doesn't really hear that much about it. It's not reported in the media, there aren't any loud groups screeching about it all the time, but medical malpractice results in around 300,000 deaths per year in the U.S., according to the CDC. Compare this to all firearm related deaths, including suicide (which make up about half of all firearm deaths in the U.S.).

Got misdiagnosed several times by doctors and got told i need a psychiatrist for imagining my neck pain. Cervical spondylitis. Got diagnosed after almost 3 months of pain enough for me to be crying all day long, and not even walk up to 100 meters ahead of me. The last doctor i found was the only one who didn't dismiss me for being young and fat, and actually paid attention to me. He still treats me like his own daughter :)

or worse, medical indifference. Docs can be in their own heads, and patients, especially women, can be ignored when it comes to advocating for their experience.

Unfortunately, doctors are humans and they must make mistakes too it’s just that their mistakes drastically alter or end lives. I don’t envy that responsibility and can’t imagine what that must feel like as a doctor. And I feel for the victims and their families. I imagine they feel anger and betrayal in addition to that debilitating grief. Awful. I see others posts about how it affected them and am so sorry people are going through that.

Also secondary effects from doctors lying to you. My mother's estate was not distributed how she wanted due to a doctor telling her she wasn't going to die. Even up to a Friday I took her to an appointment and heard the doctor tell her, "Your not going to die, this is just an inconvenience." She was dead before noon the next day. She and I had figure out she likely was going to die but due to the reassurances we thought we had longer. She didn't get some paperwork changed she would have changed. Possibly not "malpractice" but IMO it is. Doctor telling playing God and telling patient BS with (I assume) the belief they are somehow helping the patient by giving them a positive outlook. In the USA we pay good money for medical advice. Give us honest advice.

my husband died, not of the leukaemia that his got, but from the infection that one of the top research hospitals in the world gave him. When they put in the port for the meds, they succeeded in putting it in through an abscess, something they were told he was prone to. So, they just dumped all that mess straight into his heart. He never really came out of the hospital after that.

This is incorrect. Unless it's moldy (as noted above), the preservatives placed in bottled minced garlic do their job as long as the jar's stored in the fridge. https://www.charlotteobserver.com/living/food-drink/article9246218.html

There was an extremely sad case of this about 3 or 4 years ago in the UK. A parent (the mother, I think) parked her car with her child inside on a harbour slipway and the handbrake failed. They initially thought the car had been stolen and then realised what had happened. The poor child had drowned in the back seat.

I remember hearing about this as a child and worrying what I would do as parent to prevent this. I can be very spacy, distracted, etc. but somehow I never even came close to forgetting my baby in the car. I can’t quite wrap my head around how this happens but I’m sure it does and it must be so devastating for the parent. Not only are you dealing with the loss of a child which I can’t imagine but the guilt the parent must feel. I would not survive that. I admire anyone with the strength to do this. Ugh, I just feel sick thinking about it. ☹️

Read last summer of a dad who forgot he had his 14 month old baby with him - went to work as normal instead of taking the child to day care. Child died from the heat - happened in France on a day that was 22c. I've read of a few cases sadly. Another father shot himself after leaving his 18 month old in the car - I think you are right that it's something that would be nigh on impossible to live with.

    Becky Samuel
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Tylenol is in lots of products that you may not realise. Say, for example, that you're feeling really groggy with the flu/a bad cold, so you take 2 Tylenol and have a powdered lemon drink from the pharmacy for your throat. Now you're already at double the recommended dose and don't even realise it. Then you snooze for a bit and wake up feeling awful, but you can't really remember when you took the last set of Tylenol and think "It can't hurt just to take some more" and then you maybe have another lemon drink. Now you're at 4 times the recommended dose, which is starting to get into danger territory. The liver damage caused by Tylenol doesn't make you feel bad immediately, so it is quite possible to fatally overdose and not realise for quite some time. By the time you seek medical treatment the liver is failing and it's too late.

The key to doing this is not waiting until it has stopped snowing. You shovel several times a day (on the hour, if necessary) until it stops. When you wait, the snow compacts and gets heavy. I learned this years ago, and now I am starting to appreciate it in my later years.

I’ve heard the opposite about bananas. That bananas can lead to constipation. My child has difficulties with this and our doc has us restrict certain foods, bananas are one that we have to limit. Dairy is another, milk, cheese, yogurt… push peas, beans, peaches. There are other good ones to push I just can’t get my kid to eat them regularly, I believe it was cherries, apricots, mangos, and I’m sure lots of other things. And lots of water. He takes fiber gummies and miralax every day. If you want a gross comparison, you want your poo to be the consistency of soft serve ice cream coming out.

You can actually overdose on water. As I understand it, your cells get oversaturated and dilute out all the essential salts and electrolytes they need to function, like sodium and potassium. And the dangerous part is, the symptoms look almost exactly the same as acute dehydration, so well-meaning treatment with fluids can exacerbate it.

I was taught that you do NOT swerve. If a deer is in the road you can stop if possible but if not you grip the wheel and hit it head on. You will total your car, the poor deer will die, but you are more likely to survive. Deaths from this are more likely when we swerve and roll our car or hit a tree as a result. It’s awful. I haven’t had it happen with a deer but I’ve hit a bird and cried my heart out. Absolutely devastated to kill a bird. Did not swerve through. I know many people who’ve hit a deer (very common where I was growing up, considered “an act of God” by insurance companies), but they were fine because they hit it head on.

You would think this would be common sense, but I have seen several neighbors over the years, park their car, in the drive way, with icicles hanging. Have seen many smashed windshields in my time. My inclination is go over there and knock on the door to tell them, then instantly realize, it would be me, instead of a smashed windshield.

Tree wells are voids of loose snow under the branches of trees. Since this area is sheltered by the branches it doesn't get the same snow fall as the surrounding area so if a hiker steps under a tree to rest they can fall into this hole and become trapped and either suffocate or freeze to death.

There is no such thing as "toxins" that build up in the body. The kidneys and liver filter the blood just fine. If those organs are diseased then the blood becomes toxic. There is also no such thing as toxins in the intestinal tract either. The colon normally handles toxic fecal matter in everyone. The closest thing to what alternative medicine claims to be "toxins" is an imbalance in the gut bacteria.

Not drinking enough water can put a lot of unnecessary strain on your liver and kidneys though, since what they need to filter is now a lot more concentrated.

Seizures.... According to WHO statistics, More people die from a seizure every year that die of breast cancer. It is the second leading neurological issue only to depression and 9/10 people in the world will have at least one seizure in their lifetime however very little is known or taught about a seizure and what is known or "taught" is not usually correct. 1) Not all seizures are "Grand Mall" and if you see someone have a Grand mall seizure never stick something in their mouth, this can in most cases cause more injury and more likely cause death than the person biting down on their own tongue. 2) any seizure can kill a person. it is an electrical storm in the brain causing a lack of oxygen to part or all of the brain. And Any seizure can cause permanent damage. 3) Most seizures are not drug induced and actually have no medical reason ever found to what caused the seizure to happen. Both causes of death are traumatic, however there are things that can be taught in every day life to lower the death percentage of seizure deaths.
