Dad logic is one heck of a tricky business. Ask them anything and they are likely to find a way to go about it—convincing your mom to pay your rent until you turn 35 is alright, but just try mentioning a pet and you've just served yourself a rant. ‘Cause dads don’t wanna see any of those filthy paws in da house until they actually get one.
You see, there are a whole bunch of jokes surfing around the internet about just how much dads adore their new pets and how easily they forget that "never ever" that they swore, like, a day ago.
Bored Panda has compiled a list, or rather solid evidence, that busted the dads who shouted the loudest but now love their little furballs more than they love their kids. And no, don’t try telling your parents that’s how it works. Part of the magic is that any dad would ever dare to accept it.

When we got married my husband worked the graveyard shift and I was so lonely I wanted a pet. Our apartment allowed a cat but no dogs. He swore he would never have a cat because "they are a*s licking, antisocial animals." He finally caved and we got a cat. 27 years later, we have six rescue cats and he says he just doesn't think a dog would ever "fit with our lifestyle"...

It turns out, the emotional connection between middle-aged men and pets is not just in our heads. Bored Panda spoke to Chris Blazina, a psychologist and professor at New Mexico State University College of Education, who researches the emotional and psychological connection between men and dogs.
He is also the author of two books: “When Man Meets Dog,” which was recognized with the National Indie Excellence Book Award in the Men’s Health category, and “Men And Their Dogs: A New Understanding of Man’s Best Friend.”
Chris told us that in Western culture, “there is a very rigid approach to what is considered ‘masculine’; these include being stoic, tough, and denying a need to emotionally bond with others.”
This results in a complex issue because for “all the rigid rules, men are still social creatures that are hardwired to make and sustain emotional bonds with others.” It explains why, in popular culture, depictions of "masculine" men bonding with cute little pets are so rare.

Sarah, that was exactly what crossed my mind! Hopefully whether or not he blew a gasket when he saw a new pup in the home, by the time he began healing from his stroke they formed a life long bond.

What makes the matter even more difficult is that the research suggests that males tend to “mask and underreport their emotional behaviors and feelings for their dogs; for fear of being thought less manly.” This sense of convert intimacy is what many onlookers do not fully understand from the outside.

Kittens know how to break grown men. I found a little deaf kitten on the railroad track. she actually was walking in front of a train about to leave. I lived in the dorm at the time and couldn't keep her so I asked the family I was visiting to watch her for a little while. The dad didn't want her because she was a girl and he didn't want a kitten factory and because she was deaf and couldn't be an outdoor cat. I convinced them to take her for just a month till I could find her a home. She went and curled up on his pillow next to him. 7 years later, she rules the roost and he takes her out on a leash in the garden

Before we got married and moved in together, my husband always said he was allergic to cats and kept his distance. Only one single week after living with my two cats 24 hours a day, he was supervising their meals, buying special treats and toys, watching TV with one or both on his lap (yeah, I suddenly became chopped liver to my own cats), and walking around the house with two devoted cats following him everywhere. As Shakespeare would say, “He doth protest too much”.

Totally my hubby. The kids finally convinced him we should have a kitten. He wasn't for it, but did it to appease them because they kept bugging him about it. However, as soon as he went to pick one out (to surprise the kids with a few weeks later), he was smitten. He said he picked the "fighter" because he attacked his hand in the box. He was sure he would be fiesty. He is now 2.5 and the softest, gentlest cat and dh calls him (and cat #2) his furry sons and hand feeds them shrimp and fresh chicken...but he didn't want cats. He likes dogs better.

We have lived through the loss of a horse, rabbit, 4 cats and a dog all from old age. Now we have a dog, 3 horses and 3 cats for round 2. It hurts more to not have them and go without the love they give unconditionally than to have them fill your home with joy as you experience their shorter life span. To them they lived a good long safe life and were loved by their humans. That's why god gifted us the animals. Rescue an animal from a shelter and your life will be enriched beyond your wildest dreams.

Of course he does! Our dog likes to sniff the grocery bags too (we don't let him near fruit or veg, or meat, or any food that is unwrapped). He doesn't attempt to eat it, but just wants to sniff it to see what it is. Once he's investigated, he's happy.

I think sometimes grown man dont want a pet because deep down they know they will get attached and feel so much love for them, it scares them to become a soft hearted person. I dont know if that makes sense. My dad never wanted a cat at first, he hated the idea. Then we got our cat and when she died at 13 years old from cancer, my dad cried like a child. Ive never seen him cry in his life.

The only time I saw my husband cry was when we had to euthanize her. She drank antifreeze and her kidneys failed. As a matter of fact we were not allowed to have a pet when we were young. First thing I did when I left the house was get a kitten. I have never been without kittens since I walked out the door at the age of 18. My latest 2 are sisters and very bonded. If Abby walks into the room, followed by Ziva all the time. When they get the zoomies you’d think we had a herd of elephants in the house. My step son lives with me since his Dad passed. These kitties are bonded with him. When he comes upstairs from the ‘man cave’ he has two of them saying hurry up it’s dinner time.

My little sister and her Fam, had 3 black cats from the same litter and Ivy did NOT like to sleep in any man's lap, but mine. Her hubby has a big, loving family and Ivy never jumped up into any male's lap whenever they had a get together, but it never failed that as soon as I sat down anywhere in the house, Ivy was in my lap, curled up and purring...she would literally follow me around till I sat down...cat's choose you sometimes!

My brother had an adorable French Bulldog named Nemo. Unfortunately, Nemo had some spine issues that surgery was not guaranteed to fix (plus it was several thousand $). I stopped by the house one afternoon and my brother answered the door in tears, they had to put Nemo down that morning. He'd been crying all day. (I'm getting teary just remembering it).

Me...I'm not keeping an indoor cat, because I hate the smell of a litter box and refuse to deal with it. So, a little black feral cat walks in through the pet flap and takes over the house, teaches the dogs good manners, and never needs a litter box because she goes outside. 15 years, still frisky as a kitten, best cat ever.

After moving out of my childhood home and taking the dog my dad "never wanted" with me across the country, my dad would call my landline while I was at work everyday just to leave sweet, lengthy messages on my voicemail... for the dog.

This gallery so much reminds me of my grandparents. They used to have a cocker spaniel that passed away 20 years ago and they didn´t want to get another dog. They just kept resisting to our mentions that a new doggy would be a good friend for them. Then one day (it was my granddad´s birthday) we bought them a new dog - cocker spaniel (again). The moment my granddad saw the dog he was like "What is this? No, no way, take it away, absolutely not in this house." 10 minutes later my granddad was holding the dog in his arms, speechless and in tears. Now they are the best friends and Monty follows him everywhere he goes. That´s just older men and their pet kids :-)

A beautiful collection. This was me with my mum and our cat. Brought her home in my second year of secondary school when I was 15 and she said the cat would be gone in a week. The cat sleeps next to her on a special pillow, almost 16 years later. Unfortunately her tumour came back. I will sell a few unnecessary things to get enough money together, but she is worth it.

Now they are the best friends and Monty follows him everywhere he goes. That´s just older men and their pet kids :-)

animals are so important for your health and happiness! I don't know in which condition my 82yo dad would be without our dog. The dog is the reason to get up and go outside even if he doesn't feel well.

It is kind of dangerous when the men in your life agree too easily to getting pets. Me to my husband: We need a rabbit, him: Okay. Me to my husband: the dogs won't play Hendrix, we need to get him a girlfriend, him: Okay. Me to my husband: So there are these birds, him: Okay. Me to my husband: Why the hell do we have so many animals, I am so sick of cleaning the floors, my husband: Because the are f*****g adorable and stop shouting, you are scaring the children.

A beautiful collection. This was me with my mum and our cat. Brought her home in my second year of secondary school when I was 15 and she said the cat would be gone in a week. The cat sleeps next to her on a special pillow, almost 16 years later. Unfortunately her tumour came back. I will sell a few unnecessary things to get enough money together, but she is worth it.
