The other advantage is that it gives much extra wall-space, as kids want to ruin this design with their various fling-of-the-week posters and memorabilia and knick-knacks.

We have the same thing in our library, but the wall spaces are much larger. That way the kids can actually climb in the wall and cuddle up with a book!

it'd be even better with sewn-on handles from the same material. or have them poke out a bit more.

Nice idea, but my 6yr old would definitely leave one open, and I would definitely go downstairs the next morning and put my foot through the bottom of the shelf. There's no doubt in my mind.

Normally the space under the stairs isn't wasted, it's used as some type of storage space.

An added benefit is the noise reduction when the doors are closed, if you build it with the right materials.

What about the moisture? What about the possibility of spilling? Everything around is wood. So much can go wrong here.
