Not that any of these are things you need to be ashamed for, but it might be difficult to ask for them when you fear judgment from the people around you

In my experience sometimes publishers - even big, famous publishing houses - don't know what looks good on the cover and can be very unimaginative or under time pressure to get the book published. The author has nothing to do with the cover and thus it says nothing about the quality of the book

Also sometimes you can tell what the book is about from the cover- for example, if a book has a shirtless guy on the cover, it's probably steamy, cheesy romance, and nothing I want to read.

Yes I believe this as well. Also, it makes me cringe when they reprint a book or release in paperback with scenes from the movie made from it.

Hmm, not so sure about that. I have read books with immensely low-cost cover which were absolutely brilliant. So I try not to be influenced by a cover.

Only time you can't judge a book by its cover is if it is an old book with a s**t new cover or a foreign book translated with a disgusting abomination of a cover that fans would wonder why anyone approved of molesting a work of literature with such a fugly cover

Most people probably disagree but the cover is actually really important to me. It's kind of hard to explain but I have this weird preference for hard cover books.

This is sometimes true but like the comment below said, most times it´s the publishers´ fault(s).

@Giovanni I totally agree with you. Although this method is not fool proof, it does help when looking for books (but yeah, once in a while a good book has a s****y cover)

Actually, authors have no say on what the cover of their book looks like. I do agree that the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover" is not always true though.

Well, I once bought a book because I liked the colour: It was a shiny red apple on matte black. And so ended up reading Twilight on a weekend at a place without internet. -_- (It's actually an easy and fairly entertaining, if silly read. Could have been worse)

Yeah. You know what the cover does? It tells you what's in the book. My encyclopedia has a description of its contents on the back.

I agree! If there's a great illustration on the cover, especially by a well-known artist, the book is most likely good. Otherwise neither the publisher would hire the illustrator nor the artist agree to do the job.

I've been on a book binge for a few months, if I paid for every book I had read it would probably be a few thousand. I would have NEVER read that many books if I had to buy them all. Also, be sure to check out your library's digital selection!

Because they're low income doesn't mean folks are uneducated! Craftspeople are among the cleverest and more well educated I've ever met, they just don't make a lot of money.
