Exactly - I'm always so embarrassed to go to a library for a cheesy romance novel. I know I shouldn't be but I just can't help it. (Awesome idea though, really not trying to say romance novels should be on this list!)

In my experience the quality of the cover is often a clue on how much the publisher cares about the quality of the book itself, therefore judging a book by its cover is not always wrong.

    Kaisu Rei
    Community Member
7 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

In my experience sometimes publishers - even big, famous publishing houses - don't know what looks good on the cover and can be very unimaginative or under time pressure to get the book published. The author has nothing to do with the cover and thus it says nothing about the quality of the book

I visit my local library twice a week. It's one of the few things I am able to do after developing PTSD. My librarians are so kind to me and notice when i don't come. It means so much to be acknowledged, I feel safe once I'm inside with all the books around me. I once accidentally spilt coffee over a quantum physics book, they said I was the only person to ever read it and let me keep it. I live below the poverty line and was worried about the cost of replacing it, but left that day feeling cared about. :D

Quite a few automotive chains do that as well, but you have to put a deposit when you check out the tool, which is returned in full when you return the tool, as long as it's in decent shape, otherwise it becomes yours permanently

My son is on the autism spectrum, and had difficulty understanding what we meant by an “inside voice,” and we happened to find a sound-activated stoplight at a neighbor’s yard sale that worked in a similar manner (with an adjustable “red light” level), and it helped him learn.

My library serves a town of 15,000 - and it does very well - the next nearest library serves a town of 80,000. I know my local library staff and they know me. It is always a pleasure to enter- a community resource. I used to get £200 of books out per week

This is a little saddening. We as a population are doing away(IMO) with the skills required to have civilized conversation and learned respect for others. We've become way to dependent on technology. Kids don't know how to ask for assistance because it's not common anymore to talk. Just Google it, Ask Siri or send a text! Heaven forbid you have to interact with a life person who's job (librarian) it is to help.

Why is TKAM (To Kill a Mockingbird) banned? At my high school, freshmen were assigned to read TKAM. And analyze it for themes of racism and others. I guess it's banned because some people don't want to talk about racism.

This is how we used to text each other. If you wanted emojis just draw them with a pen and instead of hitting the send button you put the text paper in an envelope in the nearest mailbox with a stamp.

As an aspiring board game designer, I find the obvious palette fascinating. Did the librarians sort them this way? Is it coincidence? Do artists gravitate to those colours for some reason they're not even aware of? Or do games in those colours sell better?

When I was growing up, I lived in a house where secular music of any type was a big no-no for a long time. It was friends' homes and at the library where I could get my fill of the pop music of the day. At the library, I could also hear country, opera, folk, jazz, and music from other countries from the librarians' suggestions. Gospel music (especially the black gospel music I grew up hearing) is terrific, but man, it was so great to be able to go to the library's listening stations and hear other things. And when I was a little older, the "college" record shops had listening stations that I took advantage of during lunch breaks at school.

When I was a kid, the Edmonton Public Library had a system like this. You could request a record from a librarian and they would put it on a turntable for you. You went to a hypermodern egg chair with headphones and you could listen to the whole thing without interruptions. It was awesome.

In Australia when extreme heat is coming we are advised - if you don't have air conditioning - to go to libraries for a cool down. So this would be brilliant.
