I believe that's looking down the staircase. They wouldn't be standing on the books, the books are under each step.

The picture is looking down the steps. So you would be walking on the wooden treads and the books are in the risers. The door is at the bottom of the steps. The picture was taken at a strange angle.

i like the idea of lining the stairway, but I agree about I don't want my book to get stepped on.

Pereption problem - nobody is going to walk on the books! This view is looking down the stairs - the books are safely under the risers ;-)
