The twisting and deliberate misuse of religion is a joke. The ability to have faith in a higher power, although I'm agnostic, makes sense to me as a mental wellbeing practice. Those of us without faith need to find other ways of getting through hard times and situations we cannot control: we have faith in other things like ourselves, others, and a variety of concepts of how things will be ok, light at the end of the tunnel and all that. TLDR: Faith is a good tool for mental wellbeing imo. But the twisting of religion is the part that is a 'joke'/evil and wrong and sadly widespread

I'm not a Catholic but was schooled in my early years by nuns. Three of us (6yo) were sent to see the Mother Superior for the sin of laughing in the church. She made us pull down both our shorts and underpants before caning us on our bare buttocks 4 or 5 times each. Admittedly she didn't touch us by hand but we still felt violated and humiliated in a life changing way. The nuns were the sadists taking out their sexual frustrations via violence on children who couldn't fight back or report them to anyone. I grew up hating nuns and the Catholic church. Still do, and now we know what the priests were up to I damn them all to hell.
What's worse is this is CURRENTLY happening in the Jehovah's Witnesses and no one knows or is paying attention. An investigation in Australia found over 1500 cases in Australia alone in the last 50yrs... And they are a WAY smaller, quieter, and more private organization...
I suspect sexual abuse within the Amish community has been under-reported also. And many of those who have left the Amish community stating they were raped are not pressing charges against their rapists because those rapists are their family members.

the catholic church has so many skeletons in their closets that they could form multiple marching bands. the one that totally makes me happy with being a recovering catholic is the fact that the former pope benedict (predecessor of pope francis) stepped down from 'popehood' because "poor health". nope - it was because it came out shortly after he was voted in that he was the cardinal that had been covering up the rapes/pedophilia/even priests who became fathers and the church didn't know how to handle it any other way but to get him out of the office. so, he is off living a decent life with the church's blessings.

I would never want any government or organization to tell me that I couldn't be an atheist. And I would fight against any government that told people that they couldn't hold a religion of their choosing (that isn't physically harming others). The diocese in the town where I once lived has declared bankruptcy from all of the payouts to the victims of sexual abuse cases over the years. Only a fraction of those cases have been tried yet.
I think 8.4 per day is low. I cannot find any global statistics. In the US, cases are separated by state. So, 8.4 x 365 x 71 years = 217,686 children. This number is close to a recent report from FRANCE (link below). So, if 8.4 per day is only France, then after adding all other countries, since 1950, the total would more likely be hundreds of children per day. But I cannot find any global database that gives a total. This is so sad. Alcohol is protected by long standing human custom and sometimes religion, and seems to be exempt from the common classification of a 'drug'. In NZ in level 4 covid lockdown (the first one, most extreme lockdown), we couldn't get takeaways etc delivered. Or go get them. We could only order essential items online, and children's winter clothing was added to the list after a while. BUT: alcohol delivery was all the time, even in level 4. To your door, advertised everywhere. More available for delivery than food. More essential than almost every item, even at one point more important and legslly available before being able to buy clothes for your child. This isn't about the lockdown, the point I'm making is that it was, almost unspoken and nationwide, a 'necessity'. Every other drug (street, pharma, tobacco etc) is treated so differently, but they are no different to alcohol. It is such a juxtaposition and it really upsets me sometimes EDIT: I understand that alcohol dependency is serious, and a person can die without alcohol when they are seriously addicted. That was not the point I was trying to make: I meant the free for all that governments and society allows on alcohol, despite it being a drug like any of the ones they ban/regulate/monitor. It's that unfortunate attitude around alcohol that leaves so many people dependent to the point where alcohol was essential during lockdown, despite no acknowledgement of why that needed to be available
