It might sound counterintuitive, but drinking coffee (or another caffeinated beverage) right before a nap can actually make it more effective. This combines the rest of the nap with the time needed for the caffeine to kick in. There are all sorts of similar facts and hacks that ultimately most folks don’t know but which would be pretty useful to implement.
Someone asked “What is a crazy body life hack everyone should know?” and people shared their best ideas. So get comfortable as you read through, maybe take some notes and be sure to add your own ideas and thoughts in the comments below.

If you think it would be at all challenging (a simple rule would be anyone over age 50), get fully on the floor and back up again every single day.
You really don't want to fall and then realize that you can't get yourself back up and to your phone for help. Practicing so that it isn't terribly difficult ensures that you will still be able to do it even if you have a mild injury from the fall.
Let's not downvote Brian; let's send him some encouragement instead. That's rough, dude. I'm older than you and also have a hard time (arthritis, back injury, fat), but this is good advice. If it helps, drag 2 straight-back chairs into a large space, lay down between them, and then use them to help yourself back up. Do it everyday and after a while, you won't need both chairs; and after a longer while, you won't need any chair at all. I started doin this after I fell on the sidewalk in front of my house and couldn't get up without crawling to my front steps, and using those to get up.
Yeah, one of the signs of reasonable health is to be able to get off the floor without using your hands (when I was young (I am 76) I was able to stand from a cross-legged position by just standing straight up - now I can barely get my a*s off the ground). So I whole-heartedly agree
Load More Replies...Just realised how lucky I am. I'm 70 and recently laminated all the floors in our bungalow. I played semi-pro football/soccer with guys who have since had knees and hips replaced. Allied to this I was a carpet fitter for 25 years, on my knees every day. So I should count my blessings.
The timing of this post is crazy. I was telling my husband I need sit on the floor because there might be a day I can’t do it. Also, just started climbing the stairs. Only went up/down once. Knees cracking and painful.
if you are crackling, it could be as simple as dehydrated and need a little more healthy fat in your diet. Try and drink more and take fishoil, and keep on trying <3
Load More Replies...I am 65 and to stiff to do that and have a hard time getting up off the floor anyway. No thank you.
I think this may be to help keep from getting to that stiff point you describe
Load More Replies...If your knees / other joints hurt when you stand up, consider taking TURMERIC. I'd heard folks talk about it but I get limited help from herbal supplements and kind of poo-pooed it in my mind. But going from kneeling to standing my knees hurt so bad I gave it a try. Been taking a few years now. Made a huge difference in pain reduction. I was honestly surprised. Cheaper in bulk but I'm not fond of the taste so for me it is the Kirkland (Costco) capsules - one morning / one night. If you are suffering joint pain - give it it a try.
crawl on hands and knees to a heavy chair / sofa and lever yourself up from there. It's very difficult to get up if you're on your butt or your back; much easier from on your tummy
So true. I discovered two days ago that i could not get off the floor without help.
Yes, it’s a good exercise to do once a week . . . Especially if you’re 80 + . . . Sounds harse, but it maintains self confidence . . .
I've heard of training for older people in which they learn not to stumble: in a safe environment, PTs push them so they have to restore their balance over and over, gradually increasing the difficulty. In otherwise healthy older adults I believe it's been found to reduce subsequent falls
Load More Replies...I was just discussing this with my daughter. She said there are studies that show in countries where people tend to do daily stretching, the life expectancy is a bit longer. Not sure if that is true but I do try to get on the floor and stretch every day, if only to make sure I can get back up again.
The exercise in the photo is one that bends the spine at an extreme angle and can lead to a herniated disk in the lower back. There are better exercises to stretch the hamstrings that keep the spine straight. Any kind of head to knee stretch that bends the spine at extreme angles will likely weaken the disk.
Stretching is such an important part of being fit without too much effort people just need to take their time and do it slowly

Idk if it’s “crazy” but everyone should know you can change your palate.
Your palate is the kinds of foods you like. Many people can find themselves unhealthy because of a bad diet that comes from disliking vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, herbs, and other healthy unprocessed foods.
If you only ever eat spaghetti-Os, Goldfish crackers, chicken tenders and sweets as a kid (and as an adult), you might have a hard time eating healthy when you need to worry about it.
You are not stuck with the palate you’re born with. You can train it to like healthier things. Also you can train your kids’ palates, or at least try.
One way to get into healthier food is to order it at a sit-down restaurant, if you get a chance to. They can make salads and vegetable-based meals taste much better than you’d think they’d taste. It can teach you simple combinations that go together for you to imitate, like finding out that basil and tomatoes and olive oil go together.
Another gateway is to find one or two vegetables you hate less than all the others and start adding them in when you make food you like. Like putting broccoli in macaroni and cheese or getting mushrooms on your pizza. Or dipping pretzels in hummus, and hot Cheetos in plain yogurt. Don’t worry that it’s not any different calorie-wise. The point is to train yourself to be ok with unfamiliar tastes and textures. The calories take care of themselves if you get healthy foods to be part of what you like.
Don’t underestimate the power of ranch dressing to make things taste good.
Maybe you have sensory issues about food. So experiment with ways to cut things up. When I was trying to eat better, I learned that I didn’t hate onions when they were diced really small, and not too many were used. But long pieces or rings I just couldn’t do. Until years later I could, because eating them in a way that was comfortable for me gradually turned into me liking them.
Take it slow and be near a bathroom. It’s normal for healthy foods to make your digestion weird at first if you don’t normally eat like that.
This is a big one that a lot of adults are unwilling to change. I know so many people in thier 40s who eat like they're 12, it's ridiculous. Your tastes change and you can train them, but you need to expose yourself to new things.
Look I've tried exposing myself to new things, but the police said if I did it again I'd be arrested.
Load More Replies...Very true. You might also discover that you hate certain stuff when it's prepared one way and love it when it's prepared a different way. For instance, brussel sprouts that are baked taste like a completely different vegetable than when they're boiled. I used to think I hated eggplant, but that's because my parents always cooked it in a sauce, making it quite wet and plump. But when it's baked/fried in a more dry way, I absolutely adore it and it is now my favorite vegetable. You can also train yourself to like a lower amount of sugar or salt. After a while, you will enjoy things that you at the moment think need more sugar/salt, and the things that you now like will taste way too sweet or way too salty to you by that time. I know from my own experience that it can make a huge difference.
Pretty much everything boiled tastes less good than baked. Boiling usually involves releasing part of the flavor to the water, while baking intensifies the flavors. If anything, replace boiling with steaming :)
Load More Replies...The moment that changed my husband's mindset was when I told him if he didn't like it he could spit it out. "What's the worst that would happen? You would have had something gross in your mouth for 5 seconds." I think giving yourself permission to spit things out, not like things, or waste a little food, can make a big difference.
Spitting food out... Tried that once with my mom. Got smacked on the lips. I am afraid, spitting food out is not an option for me in this lifetime.
Load More Replies...Yup! I recently cut out all sugar but natural sweeteners like honey and naturally occurring fruit sugars. The difference in my palate is unbelievable, though I have a healthy diet and lifestyle otherwise!
I'm just wondering if you felt different in any other way? After cutting out sugar, that is. Did you notice a difference in energy, or even in inflammation? I don't mean to be intrusive, but I've been reading a lot about the effects of processed sugar on the body, and I'm curious about other people's experiences.
Load More Replies...Thank you. I was agreeing with most of this until I got to the power of ranch. That's worse than everything they listed in the "before" meal....
Load More Replies...This also works for tastes in people. No, I don't mean you should marry someone analogous to Brussels sprouts. But if you find yourself attracted, for instance, to "bad boys" or "crazy girls," and wish it were otherwise, maybe you could do some introspection as to why.
That's *really* difficult. Sprouts are much easier :-)
Load More Replies...Parents - make your kids eat variety. I totally get kids are different and some lean hard into liking / not liking this or that. My mom didn't force me to eat portions of things I didn't like BUT - the two main rules were 1. Whatever things she made I had to take at least one bite. 2. She didn't cater to me with alternate meals. She made the same thing for dinner for all of us and I could eat it or not eat. So as an example - I didn't like bell peppers when I was young. If the meal included them, I could take one bite and fill up on the parts of the meal I liked. The result is I grew up with a really well rounded palette. The foods I didn't like became 'okay' after a while and some of them I actively like. I still chuckle to myself when adult me buys bell peppers on purpose. :)
I totally agree with this. In my very limited personal experience most adults who don't like veg didn't have to eat them as kids. Most adults who like veggies ate them (by choice or not-like you said, at least try a bite) as kids. I LOVE veggies, but resented my parents when I was a picky child. Thanks mom and dad!
Load More Replies...The foods I hate taste to me the same way gasoline would taste to you. I don't know why people have such a hard time understanding this. You can take a green bean and gold plate it, put sugar and honey on it, grill it, or cut it up into teeny pieces. I'd still taste every one of those pieces and my first reaction is to spit it out. I eat a lot more food now that I'm older, but what I didn't like when I was younger, I still don't like, no matter what I do. If it doesn't taste good, it doesn't taste good, so give it a rest and quit telling me to "try it, you'll like it".
That's how many foods used to taste to me, for example, olives. Disgusting. Foul. I forced myself to try them again and again and the taste grew less gross, then neutral, then good, now I LOVE olives. As the OP said, you CAN learn to adjust your palate but it takes time and effort and trying things you don't like repeatedly.

Pro tip: the older you get, the less you can trust a fart.
Hahaha! This is so true! If I'm unsure, I'll go to a toilet and sit down before I let it go
As you get older you can't trust your sh### either. Anything can happen.
I used to work with a bunch of real annoying old farts, and , yeah, none of them were to be trusted.
I haven't had that happen but I do now know why the call us (at this age) old farts.
If you have a back injury or a broken rib and have to sneeze, LOOK UP, it will hurt way less than hunching down to sneeze.
I've had back surgery and my dad had a cracked rib. Confirmed.
Also works when you cough after a C-section or any other abdominal surgery.
Load More Replies...There's not much that doesn't hurt when you have a broken rib, but every little bit helps, I suppose.
"Depends" Did nothing for me when I had rods down my spine to fix multiple broken vertebrae together with practically every rib broken, leading to drains in both side of the chest due to collapsed lungs. Like many people with severe back injuries I would not have been able to move my head up if I tried; doing so could easily have resulted in further injury so I was virtually immobilised.
Or press one finger right beneath your nose (between your nose and lips)
Placing an ice pack on your chest can almost immediately relieve the need to throw up in some circumstances (maybe not for food poisoning or stomach virus, but things like motion sickness, panic attack, or medication nausea). The reason this works is it stimulates your vagus nerve. Learned this firsthand when I was about to vomit in a hospital and the nurse placed a cold pack on my chest. Instantly felt fine again.
I'll have to try this the next time I feel like throwing up while having a migraine. Will update later with results.
So sorry about your migraines. I worked the night shift in an ER, and our director (MD) used to get them, but he couldn't take meds while at work. One night I made him a cup of strong coffee, followed by two aspirins with water, and a cold pack on his neck. He felt a lot better in about 20 minutes. Maybe this will help you.
Load More Replies...If your body feels a need to puke, there's a reason. Listen to your body.
I have extreme anxiety so throwing up is my nerves not anything to do with needing something out of my body so I think this sounds nice.
Load More Replies...A friend told me this and gave me a swab to sniff. I promptly vomited into the nearest trash can. So . . . Maybe not for everyone. 😆
Load More Replies...I'll definitely have to try this. I get random, sudden attacks of intense nausea and vomiting for no obvious reason on a regular basis. Zofran/Ondansetron is a lifesaver provided you have some on hand and take it well before the point vomiting becomes inevitable, but without it, or to buy time to get to a bathroom... I'm going to try that.
Water is a better home remedy for a lot of stuff that "isn't quite at the point where I need medicine".
Yes. If you have a sore throat, drink water. If you have a headache, drink water. If you're just plain old sick, drink water. And get plenty of it when you're healthy, too.
My mom was a nurse. If we told her we didn't feel good, first thing she'd say was "Drink a glass of water, then come back in 15 minutes". Often, that made us feel better.
Not for nausea though, in that case sipping on Canada Dry ginger ale is much better. If I'm nauseous and drink water it will come back up.
Load More Replies...I'm a retired nurse. I raised my kids saying, "A hot bath and a good poop will fix most anything." Not too long ago I went to the ER with chest pain. Him, "Yearrrrssss." 😆
Well that's different. My go-to for "not quite" is a swallow of whisky, swallow of honey, Tylenol, heating pad. Most things are gone in the morning. P.S. Not normally a drinker. Oh; and if its a cold coming, Vicks up my nose. (I live alone.)
Brush your teeth daily! Floss your teeth daily!
Less or no cavities. Less/No expensive root canals. Less/ni extractions.
It saves you money, pain, and your looks.
Dentures f*****g suck.
Also hugely helps your mental health and immune system. I live in a developing nation called England where dental health is a low priority for the government and public alike.
Yeah, here in Canada we like to brag about our universal health care. Have a health issue? No problem, just go to the doctor. Free of charge! Oh, unless your problem is your teeth or your eyes, in that case you'll need to pay up if you want anything done. Can't? Oh well, f**k you then.

Here you go, it's disease. My partner is dyslexic and I spend a lot of my time spelling words out for him.
Load More Replies...I was fanatical about my dental health. But once I got pregnant with my first, it went downhill fast. I ended up in the hospital with micro accesses in all my top teeth. Didn't know it at the time, but I had gone septic. 5 days later, they called the dental surgeon back to remove them under my medical insurance. 10 years later, I finally got the bottoms removed. 1 year wait for dentures only to discover they made me throw up constantly. Get them adjusted 5 years later. Got cancer and chemo made them not fit. Take care of your teeth!
There's a saying that brushing at night is to keep your teeth, and brushing in the morning is to keep your friends. Best to do both really.
My teeth were discolored because I was given tetracycline when I was a child. It wasn't too bad, it didn't bother me, but it bothered my mom and she paid for veneers.
Load More Replies...I can attest to this. Flossing saved my teeth - I was heading for dental disaster when I heard a dentist on a talk show. He said these magic words: "It doesn't have to be perfect, just do it".
Had an orthodontist recommend flossing if you’re having sinus issues. As someone who can’t take sinus meds, it actually helps. I don’t know all the science behind it, but keeping the bacteria around your teeth down helps keep sinus infections down. I also just find the manipulation of my gums helps get fluid moving in my face. And my sinuses make my gums sore, so flossing is like itching them, and the toothpaste after is soothing.
Calcium and magnesium can do wonders for anxiety and sleep.
Always check with your doctor though, taking supplements when you don´t need them can sometimes create serious health issues.
Yeah but getting an overdose of magnesium is quite difficult and you will s**t your insides out if you do.
Load More Replies...I take both daily because of bariatric surgery and they haven't helped my mild sleep apnea at all.
Didn't make any difference for me and the only thing that did help stopped working as antidepressants often do. No other antidepressant has had the same effect (even the one that I take for fibromyalgia pain. It does help with getting better quality sleep, but not getting to sleep in the first place).
Don’t know why you were downvoted. I also have fibromyalgia and yeah, those supplements don’t do anything.
Load More Replies...Magnesium is good for leg cramps. (My doctor told me this, so I take 1/day.)
Those who menstruate. Be aware that large amounts of calcium will inhibit iron absorption and potentially lead to anemia. I found that out the hard way. I only take a tablet for half the recommended calcium dose now. (I can't eat dairy, so supplement is useful for me.)
It took me years to figure out, but there are like at least eight kinds of magnesium. Pretty much all of them cause diarrhea except magnesium glycinate which is a blood thinner.
At the risk of getting too techno... There is only one kind of Magnesium. It is an element (o.k. a couple of isotopes too, but that is really splitting hairs) The thing you are experiencing is how the Magnesium is delivered. Your body does not digest elemental magnesium. it has to be attached to something else. It is called Chelation. It is what the magnesium is chelated to that is causing the other effects. The same is true of any metal, including Calcium and Iron (Yes, Calcium is a metal). The way that it is chelated drives how your body absorbs it and reacts to it.

Measure the distance from your thumb to pinky when spread out and remember the distance. You can now measure things with relative accuracy.
Using this for years. 25cm. Pretty handy to get an estimate of the measurment
From my hipbone to the ground is exactly 1 meter, also very useful.
Load More Replies...But there’s distance between thumb and pinky kinda half trying to stretch, there’s the distance at a so-called average stretch, there’s the distance after trying slightly too hard and there’s the distance whilst trying to the extreme. You can make 'shocking and crazy' improvements to how you feel by doing three simple things.
1. Drink enough water to stay hydrated - this isn't 'carry a bottle around', this is more like 'your pee should be a little bit yellow and very clear'.
2. Sleep. For best practice, sleep with no stimulus - no noise in the background, no lights, mobile phone, etc.
3. Get some intentional exercise in daily.
A fourth is avoiding processed foods, but that is usually more difficult than the first three.
I can't sleep without some kind of white noise. If I am tired enough I might be able to sleep like for an hour than I will wake up and can't sleep because of no noise.
I sleep much better with white noise. It was especially helpful when I worked 3rd shift & had to try to sleep during the day!

#4 depends on where your definition of "processed food" starts, because technically even the most basic sourdough bread is processed food, and also just about anything to do with meat (which, to be fair, you shouldn't eat much of in any case).
If your heart is racing and you can't calm down, stick your head in cold water. It will stimulate a vagal response via the mammalian dive reflex and lower your heart rate.
(and obviously go to the doctor to get checked out after).
...and remember to remove head from water to breathe. Unless you are a fish
I am an addicted lap swimmer. I sometimes forget that I do not gave gills. Very annoying.
Load More Replies...That trick for quelling nausea with an ice pack on the chest also works for anxiety because it stimulates the vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system. Woohoo. I am not a medical professional I just have anxiety so I did a ton of research on it. Bit more practical than head submerging most of the time.
My heart was beating at 160 while resting. Drove my self to the ER as the terrible insurance from my old company would force me to pay for the ambulance. Once there, they grabbed me and did an EKG, then said they will get me a wheelchair. Told them I could walk to the bed. Told me to breath through a tube and slapped an ice pack over my eyes. They hit me with some meds, heart rate would go down for a bit and then come back up. Then the doctor came back and said "just got off the call with the cardiologist, we're going to have to shock you". Hit me with propophel and told me it might burn a bit but let him know when I started feeling drowsy. Didn't feel the burn, but then I started to feel drowsy and told him. He asked me to put my head all the way on the pillow, which I did and then he said "NOW!". And my chest goes flying up into the air. Got it permanently taken care of later, in and out of the hospital the same day.
So all those people who've told me to go soak my head were worried about my heart? They really didn't seem to like me at all.
Check out the advice about using a cold pack to prevent nausea. It's affecting the same nerve. It's also the nerve that can stop your heart instantaneously if you jump into cold water.
Also carotid massage and controlled deep breathing... Though that requires some degree of knowledge of one's own anatomy 😅
Very respectfully, carotid massage should only be done by medical professionals, you can really jack up other issues and make the situation MUCH worse if you do carotid massage at the wrong time...

Dreadful advice, Betsy. There are myriad other benefits from all forms of movement, and sedentary lifestyles have been associated with huge health risks. It's not all about weight!!!
Load More Replies...well, you can, but it depends on how bad of a diet, and how much you are willing to give up. I have a six pack even tho my back is broken, and i have a horrible diet caused by eating disorders. But its true for overeating processed food and to much unhealthy fats. But, if you add the right kind of fat, your need for sugar will go down. Sugar is bad, but good fat is essential for a healthy body.

Planking for a minute a day will help with lower back pain.
Ha ha! Planking. For a whole minute! I'm lucky to get my hips even a cm off the floor. If you already have a plankable body, you likely don't also have back pain.
I have lower spine arthritis. I was surprised when the physical therapist have me all the back exercises. He instructed me to do them just to the point of pain and then back off. Kind of hang out breathing deeply at that edge of pain point and then relax. Repeating the stretch this way I found the tissue gradually warms up and relaxes. After a number of days the arthritis will lessen and one can get fully into the stretches. Most chronic back pain is from lack of exercise.
Load More Replies...I hate planking, but I do it anyway and it does help. What keeps me in the position is that there is always at least one cat under me, and I don't want to crush it. I think cats are great personal trainers, they also make me get down on the floor and up again several times a day, I just want to know what getting toys out from under the fridge is good for?
I had to stop doing the plank (even though I was getting pretty good at it), because I realized I had Diastasis Recti (also known as rectus abdominis diastasis, a condition that occurs when the two rectus abdominis muscles in the front of the belly separate). Women often get this after pregnancy, and planking will cause those muscles to separate further. So for instance, when you do a sit-up (which I also had to stop doing), you just have one muscle in the middle of your belly that engages. There are things you can do to correct this (other than surgery, which is sometimes also done), but it's annoying.
Yes!!! Planking without correcting diastasis recti will jack it up and make it worse! It can actually train the muscles to gape further apart 😵💫
Load More Replies...According to experts, planking for a minute is useless and increases the risk of shoulder and other injuries. A half-minute plank or plank variations or lighter/easier planks are more effective if the full plank is still not possible. Long planking is just stupid. Like some silly competition about who pees further or longer.
Hey, I can't do a push up but I think I can do a plank. Also apparently doing bridges (which strengthens your glutes) helps with lower back pain.
help with lower back pain by masking it with all-over-the-body pain?
If you have lower back pain or sciatica try gluteus medius burnouts. Use a chair or table to steady yourself and raise one leg straight out to the side as high as you can and hold that until it feels like your hip is on fire and trying to cramp. Repeat on the other side. It sounds crazy but it can eliminate lower back pain instantly.
And what do you do when it does cramp ? Mine cramos , abd while i know what to do when hand/ foot/ leg cramp, hip cramp is horrible.
Drink more water, but also stay within the limits that you feel within you. You can always expand your range. But its a good way of getting that blood flowing into hard to reach muckles.

An easy way to cool off is putting something cold against your wrists. The arteries there will cool spread that throughout your body
Edit: I may have the science behind it wrong but I have found it to work well working on those hot days.
This will work any place that the blood comes close to the surface of your skin, so: wrists, inside elbows, back of knees, sides of your neck, ankles. Also the opposite works.....if you are cold extra insulation at these locations will keep your whole body warmer.
On your wrists, behind your knees, inside your elbows, on your temples: Everywhere the skin is thin and arteries are close to the surface. Also, if you can take it, around your neck where the big ones pass through.
Stress k*lls, let go of what is out of your control.
This statement is simple, true, and correct. I quit a job that was eating me alive with stress. I had no opportunity to manage my day to day. I now work in a similar job. But I control my day to day. Yes, the pay is lower. But the S.U.C.I.D.AL thoughts are gone and I feel 100% better. So Yes. Its a simple statement. But 16+ years at my old job took so many years off my life I am 100% sure. So a mindset change can make a huge difference.
Nearly everything you read on stress includes the "advice" to avoid stress or stressful situations. But the biggest sources of stress (for most people) are: money, work, relationships, "major life events", health... How exactly are we supposed to "let go" of things like that?
My mother has cancer, and my father who has Alzheimer's. Not really something I can let go of.
The fact that certain things are out of your control can be a major source of stress.
People with chronic high stress have significantly poorer outcomes if they get cancer. Little known fact. Stress has a big impact on your immune system. I need a less stressful job!
No. People get sick cause of pathogens [I'm not talking about cancer btw] not cause of being drained. If the immune system thing were true pathogens wouldn't exist. That's just ridiculous.

If you start eating at set times each day, pretty soon you won’t feel hungry except at those times. Your stomach and gut biome produces the hormone ghrelin, which causes you to feel hungry, and the production of it becomes entrained to the times when you usually eat. For instance, if you think that you can’t go to bed without eating a snack before (which is actually not a good idea), if you can just tough it out for a few days, the urge (“need” lol) to eat before bed will pretty much just disappear. Doing this also makes it much much easier to resist mindless snacking and is much healthier for your body for a bunch of reasons, blood sugar spikes being a big one.
I guess we're all built differently. Aerobic exercise makes me ravenously hungry.

This doesn't work for me because I have a funky schedule. On the weekends I work and don't get home until after 8, so no dinner until then. Then im usually absolutely exhausted so i crash right away. During the week I eat at normal times. But since I'm so used to eating before bed, I have to have a snack.

It's very painful, especially first thing in the morning. Had to get special insoles (over $300) just to walk painlessly. Stretching the calves just wasn't cutting it.
YES. The exercises are simple and you can even do most of them (or variations) sitting in a recliner. Also - shoes with good arch support. For me it's Hoka tennis shoes. I got plantar fasciitis about three years ago. First (so far only) time. Suffered for weeks, got to the point it was painful to walk across parking lot from car to store. Thought - oh c**p - is this what the rest of my life is going to be like? Got diagnosed, found out it is common in older people. Attended a few physical therapy sessions. But you don't need in person PT. You can google up lots of helpful articles / videos showing you the simple exercises. Most are ones you can do anywhere like raising up on the balls of your feet. As OP notes - most of the exercises are stretching calve muscles, but also some side to side of the ankle.

I don't know if this is true for everyone, but I find that when you're driving and you start to feel drowsy, snacking on something small like nuts really keeps you awake. For some reason while you're actively eating, that feeling of drowsiness disappears.
If you're drowsy while you drive, take a break. You want to wake up again ...
I read that as smacking yourself in the nuts will keep you awake, LOL. Thought that's a bit extreme!
I keep sunflower seeds in my car for this very reason, learned it from my mom.

If you feel light-headed as you stand up (orthostatic hypotension) you can squeeze any muscle as hard as you can and it will quickly raise your pulse and blood pressure so you don't black out and fall.
Won't work with any muscle. The muscle needs to be big enough to have an impact on pulse and BP. Squeezing a part of your arm or leg will not do a thing. Clenching those delicious butt cheeks together will though!

Inverting your spine calms your heart.

works every time.
Place hands palm down on a sturdy surface, push up while letting all the muscles in your abdominal, hips and legs go limp. It will decompress your spine from your neck down to the your tailbone. For someone like me, it feels like your spine is an accordion toddler toy

Sleep enough and walk far more. Let 90% of your drinks be water.
I started with cutting alcohol from Dec 1-25th. If you have bad period cramps and no other options, three days before it comes eat a lot of fiber (veggies, fruits etc.) and/or drink ginger. It will ease it up and make it more bearable for you.
For us who lives with pain with some of the periods during the year; this does not work at all. And how would ginger and vegetables help?
Ginger is probably for nausea. Vegetables are probably for fiber so things pass through quickly. Endometriosis, andometriosis, PCOS, etc can be causes of period pain. Diagnosis and some treatments might help, but honestly, there's still a lack of research and investment in uterus/ovarian health.

Having a coughing fit? Raise your arms above your head and say the ABCs (or just say anything really, so long as you keep talking). The coughing will stop much quicker.
Have the hiccups? Inhale as much air as you possibly can, and then inhale a little more lol. Then hold it all in for about 10-15 seconds, and exhale. Most of the time this will get rid of the hiccups on the first try, but 2-3 tries basically guarantees it.
I do this and it absolutely works. I have to keep my cheeks puffed as I'm holding my breath too. If you let the air out too quickly, it won't work.
It might be positioning. I have a method where a person has to put chest to the front, shoulders to the back (might be even hands to the back), and drink a few sips of water. Works only if position correct. Might be related to this breathing method, as chest goes front when inhaling,

Most of the time for hiccups, I can stop them if I sit down, close my eyes, and just focus on breathing very shallow until they're gone. For more persistent ones, I do the trick of drinking multiple small sips of water while plugging my nose (and thus not taking in any breaths) until *almost* to the point where it starts getting scary, like you are suffocating. And if that doesn't work, the last resort is to breathe into a plastic bag until they go away -- but again, this often means doing it until you feel like you are suffocating (and you let in just a tiny bit of air into the bag near the end, so you don't actually suffocate). Hiccups are crazy.
My mom taught me the first trick when I was a child and I still use it as needed! It works instantly for me.
Cure for 'opera cough' (that violent cough that you can't stop) is to blow your nose several times very hard. It's often caused by a single drop of moisture from your sinuses that is trickling down your windpipe. Blow hard enough several times and you can blow it out your nose.
Beets or beet juice for more energy and endurance during physical activities and cardio, the difference is extremely noticeable. Something to do with getting oxygen to your blood more efficiently.
I just want to clarify something for people who may not realize it. Beet juice isn't what's in the can of beets you just opened. That's water. To get real beet juice you either need to juice it yourself or go to a juice bar. It's also super sweet

If you are having a panic attack count from 10 backwards is a different language, or try to recite the alphabet backwards. It will help you disconnect from your emotional side, engage your logical brain and ground you.
Also cold showers are wonderful for emotionally draining days. Dont make any decisions until after you taken a cold shower. Helps reset your body and mind.
If you are stuck on a problem write it down. 9 out of 10 times you will simplify and be able to process better what the problem is and help achieve the solution.
There’s just one problem with taking a cold shower- I’ll go AAAA!! In cold weather at least, it’s very painful!
Cold showers are excruciatingly painful. It would take me hours to recover. Thanks but no thanks.
Load More Replies..."It will help you disconnect from your emotional side, engage your logical brain and ground you." No. Just no. Not in the middle of a panic attack, this is such nonsense from someone who has never had a real panic or anxiety attack, just bad anxiety.
That only works if your panic attack is emotional (aka an anxiety attack). For many (myself included) panic attacks are neurochemical induced and will require chemistry to fix. IMHO, emotional panic attacks aren't even "real" panic attacks, they are anxiety attacks (still really traumatic, just different). For a real panic attack you have a serious serotonin and dopamine imbalance, generally from a past traumatic head injury. You won't be taking a cold shower because in a "real" panic attack, you are immobilized. you can't move.
No. Psychological panic attacks are real. But good job being offensive and insulting.
Load More Replies...If I ever chose to take a cold shower, I would have no faith in my decision making skills afterward.
If that works for you then you do not have a panic attack. Maybe some anxiety but never a panic attack, in this pretty much nothing of all those well meaned ' hacks' will work. It will either run its course or you take some of the hard stuff. Suffered from panic attacks for almost 3 years thanks to some undiagnosed thyriod problem and i tried pretty much everything. It maybe works for somebody who thinks: oh! That is i think a panic attack but not for somebody who is in full ' i am going to die' mode. The only thing that sadly helped was calling the ambulance or going into ER and have a proffesional telling you that you are surely not dying. True for me at least.
The only trick that ever helped me only worked if you caught it early, when it was building. Going up and down the stairs as many times as possible to burn off excess adrenaline (I think? Or other stress hormones?) in the body helped a little tiny bit in reducing the severity, IF I caught it early enough. I totally agree with you. This would never work in the middle of a raging panic attack.
Load More Replies...For me, the best way to stop a panic attacks is to scream "NO" as loud as you can (in your head, not out loud) then scream even louder. When you're concentrating on making your scream as loud as you can without being able to hear it, it takes the panic attack out of your mind. I hope this helps someone else, panic attacks are horrible
I recite the alphabet backwards to help me drift off to sleep. It's also a good exercise to try and keep Alzheimer's at bay.
A cold shower will probably irritate me more if not pis* me of even more.
Different language trick works best in a language you don't speak fluently
When you are walking and someone else is walking toward you in the opposite direction, direct your focus on the side you intend to pass on, on where you want to go.
they will subconsciously pick up on your body language and you'll never do that awkward "oh sorry excuse me oops" side step thing again.
DOES NOT WORK. People on the sidewalk are absolutely feral and do not care if they take up the whole thing. Especially multiple friends walking together YOU DO NOT OWN the sidewalk! Pair off!!! Can you tell this is a sore spot with me.
Not to mention the people who look at their cell phones and not where they're going.
Load More Replies...Or just walk on the side you intend to walk on. My observation at least in the USA is in situations with pedestrians going both ways (sidewalks, the aisle in the mall) most people walk like they drive. As in, most people will walk to the side that is their right. (I am mildly curious if folks in left hand driving countries tend to do the opposite). The rare times that someone isn't over far enough, I just stop for a second and let them walk around me.
Nevertheless when people dont have common sense and you've been walking on a side for a while and suddenly a person joins you in the opposite direction in "your" lane, i look them dead in the eye until they realise their calculated mistake 😅 in cities like Brussels its become a power play but its mainly rude
In any case, whichever way you walk on the pavement its common sense to walk your right. So if you to your right you will always be right 😜
Cell phone zombies make it hard for me to even get the oncoming person to even notice I exist. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't also ignoring the unspoken agreed upon rule of which side of the sidewalk to keep on. (Here in Japan it's left. Keep to the left!) But I do a little hand tipped to the side I want to go to along with the slight shoulder twist just on the off chance they aren't oblivious.
I am constantly almost running into people: suddenly my body starts veering in the wrong direction. It's most odd.
Doesn’t work with groups of tourists, unfortunately. I live in a very touristy town and apparently locals are invisible…
Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth to stop a brain freeze instantly.
I can confirm this works, to a degree. Doesn't completely stop brain freeze, but it does lessen it significantly
I am apparently quite unique from the general population, because despite having eaten many a bowl of ice cream and lots of other frozen treats, I have never had brain freeze (aka 'ice cream headache' for the other commenter). So I have no reference for what y'all are experiencing.
Same, no brain freeze. Teeth sensitive to cold? Yes, if I am not taking enough calcium. Cold for throat until light ache? Yes. Brain freeze? No. For a while I thought it was some kind of invented thing in the books.

A heating pad is my lifesaver. Upset stomach, back pain, hungover, just feeling chilly? Heating pad.
A nuked(1 minute) home made bag of rice also relives a lot of joint pain I've found.
A warm purry cat does the same, and is so pleasant to cuddle ;)
Be careful about using a heating pad to much on muscles. If you use it on muscles to much it can weaken your muscles. In the past my back right hip would hurt and still does and I use a heating pad on it quite a bit in the past. I believe it weaken my right hip muscle. Before I retired last year my hip was hurting and wanted to find out what was wrong. Went to the doctor had x rays done on it and was sent to a therapist. Had me do some exercise on them. Helped out. Give me exercise at home to do. Started to do them and it helped but end up being to lazy to do them so stopped. That is my experience anyway. My hip still hurts but manageable.
Probably not caused by the heating pad. Heating the muscle and tissue will relax them and improve the blood circulation to that area. But within minutes of discontinuing the heat, the tissue goes back to its normal state. The problem all along was probably weak muscles caused by a sedentary life style. But heating inflamed joints will make inflammation worse. Ice packs are best for that. If you use a heating pad for an inflamed joint to get the muscles to relax, follow that with an ice pack to reduce the inflammation.

If you suffer from anxiety, cut out all caffeine in your diet.
As someone who really suffers with anxiety, I cut out caffeine from my diet 2 months ago for other reasons and the difference in my anxiety levels is unbelievable.
Caffeine is not as benign as many make it out to be. My wife snores and has bad nights sleeping, probably undiagnosed sleep apnea, which she refuses to consider. So she counters by drinking a pot of coffee through out the day. Since she started coffee consumption she has become the most irritable, complaining person I know. Consistent yoga will heal your chronic body aches, improve coordination, prevent injury, and relieve chronic stress.
For some people. It doesn't work for everyone. For some it causes damage. Don't do it if you're hypermobile. You'll destroy your joints. (Pilates can work, if you really feel you need artificial exercise.)
Agree. I used to do yoga. The head to knee pose bends the lowest portion of the spine to an extreme angle that will weaken the disk and cause it to herniate. I had surgery for that. The plow bends the cervical spine at an extreme unnatural angle and will herniate the cervical disk. Been there. Done that. Steroid injections in the cervical spine to deal with that are not fun. Many of the exercises physical therapists gave me are from Pilates and strengthens the core muscles, which are what actually hold up your spine. Yoga mostly stretches the tissue where Pilates strengthens it.

Many people have nutrient deficiencies and do not know it. Regularly go to a general physician ( ig standard doctor ) and get full blood work done, specifically making sure they test for nutritional deficiencies. Properly addressing and solving a deficiency has WAY more impact than adding in 'extra' nutrition to perform, think, sleep, etc better. On that note, multivitamins are dope, use them.
To double down on that, statistically most of you reading this are deficient in vitamin D. Even if you are outside a lot. Yes, really! Folks who work outside all day are still regularly deficient.
blood glucose levels spike approximately 90 minutes after eating. physical activity and or exercise around then will cause your body to not store as much food as body fat.
Digestion inhibits sleep, especially deep sleep. Don't eat within a few hours of bed time.
Also, generally speaking movements as simple as 'air squats' ( squatting without weight ) for 30 or 60 seconds periodically during the day are enough to impact metabolism, such as the 90 min mark I cited.
Generally, evolution has created many reactions to different situations that cause our bodies to either grow more fat to store long term energy, or to instead grow and develop organs and muscles. Learn them to more efficiently achieve your goals, whatever those goals may be.
cold and heat exposure are consistently having more and more scientific support of substantial health benefits. So ice baths and saunas, or even potentially as little as a super hot shower ending in 30-60 seconds of cold
Agree with Betsy, unfortunately my doctor would laugh in my face if I'd ask for tests without actually experiencing problems. I live in a rich West-European country, but our doctors are too overworked to help all the patients who have problems NOW, to spend time on preventing future problems in people who are seemingly healthy at the moment.
Same, I can’t just pitch up and ask for tests unless I have symptoms.

Sit like you’re driving in your car. Cross your ankles. Push your knees outwards. This will pop your lower back.
Did this on accident when I was 7 months pregnant with my second child. I had been driving for over an hour and was in dead stop traffic for 20 minutes so the put the car in park to stretch my legs for a second. I had my ankles crossed and stretched my legs outwards and I heard and felt the biggest pop I’ve ever in my life. It scared the c**p out of me bc I was very pregnant. Turns out it helped *alot*! Before, my tailbone/hips were stiff and could barely move. Afterwards, it was like a whole new lower back!! I’ve been trying to get my husband to do the same because he has a lot of lower back pain, but he’s stubborn. Maybe one of these days.
Of course stretching and drinking water probably prevents this stuff but I’m stubborn too so.

If you have trouble swallowing pills, put the pill in your mouth and drink water through a straw.
I have never had this problem - I can swallow a handfull of pills with one sip of water
I don't even need the sip. I can dry swallow and it freaks people (especially doctors and nurses) out when they see me do it.😀
Load More Replies...FOOD. I have no problem water or food but years ago a friend taught me the food trick and it really is the easiest method IMO. Yes to what Betsy said about chew until ready to swallow - then insert pills, 'mush to cover' then swallow. Soft foods like a banana or yogurt work really well but so can a bite of sandwich or whatever. Especially true if you have to take a larger than usual pill - such as certain antibiotics.
Or use a slightly thicker liquid, like a yoghurt drink.
The best technique I’ve seen is to place the pill on the floor of your mouth right behind your front teeth, then take a regular drink of water (a normal mouthful, not a sip). If it works, what happens is that the pill will float up and go down with the water, and you may not even notice it. Too many people who have trouble swallowing pills put them on their tongue, which triggers taste buds and salivation, causing you to taste the pill and the pill to start dissolving, both of which can inhibit your ability to swallow it (because pills meant to be swallowed whole almost always taste nasty). By putting it on the floor of your mouth, you can avoid tasting it and delay salivation.
If you have a bloody nose and need to stop it asap press right under your nostril for like 30 seconds. I have no idea why it works, I saw it on a Bear Grylls show LOL.
It might have to do with the nerve that runs under your nose[ your face is pretty complex b/c of the nerves that need to run from one side of your head to the other (your left hemisphere controls the right side etc and so the nerves have to make this complicated trip)
I think you'd need to show how that nerve controls the flow and/or clotting of blood in the affected are for your theory to stand up. If it does work, and like nearly all of these I'm very sceptical, then it's more likely a result of muscle contractions around the blood vessels being initiated by the pressure.

Knowing what food or drink makes you take a s**t a short time later is a game changer. For me it's like two strong cups of Coffee, but also depends if i have not taken a s**t for almost a day or so.
Big trip comin up with a long ride on train/bus/flight or you going on a long hike?
No Problem: i drink one or two strong coffee in the morning, take my S**t for the day and dont have to deal with ugly public toilets
Now you can avoid going to terrible public toilets.
A big glass of water followed by some exercise works best for me, though it’s not totally reliable. I hate coffee, but did try it for this purpose, with no luck.
Local folk remedy for stopping diarrhea: A spoonful of powdered (not ground) coffee with some lemon juice squeezed into it is swallowed in one gulp followed immediately by a whole glass of water drunk as quickly as possible. It stops the runs immediately. I asked an MD about this. He explained why it works. He also didn't recommend it but said it was OK in an emergency.😀
Exactly. This is a really weird concept to me

Not regular? Long-term, you need to adjust your diet, but short-term..... put a large glass of water by the side of your bed before going to sleep. When you wake up, before you do ANYTHING and while still mostly lying down, drink the whole glass in one go. Then get up and go about your day. You're welcome!
Can comfirm. I’ve got a new kitty and have changed bedside glasses of water for bedside bottles of water.
Load More Replies...Instead of a glass, keep a (reusable, not single-use) water bottle near your bed. A glass of water will start to taste funny after some time sitting out (I've heard that's due to it collecting dust and possibly bacteria). Any time I wake up to visit the bathroom, I always take a little sip of water as I come back to bed. And then some more upon waking.
I would have to run a marathon to the bathroom as soon as I woke up.
If your nose is congested, push your tongue firmly against the roof of your mouth for about ten minutes. It should clear your nose for several hours.
I was bitterly disappointed in the US election results this year, but I pushed my tongue firmly against the roof of my mouth and I instantly felt better :P
Wish I could reply directly to McKenzy, but just wanted to correct their declaration that "over half of the country voted for trump." 77.3 million voted for him. There are 332.9 million Americans. So about 23% of the country voted for him. As a percentage of voters, 49.9% voted for trump and 48.4% voted for harris. Beyond the factual error, and this is pure speculation, I'd be willing to bet McKenzy was ok with the Let's Go Brandon/F**k Joe Biden chants (or at least never told anyone doing that to be supportive of their country and its elected leader and to "get over it").

Of course, your nose stuffs right up again, but for a second or so, you're clear!

Antihistamines are amazing for anxiety.
I’d rather be sleeping than having an anxiety or driving with anxiety
Load More Replies...Even when I was overdosing on antihistamines, before I got a steroid nasal spray that means I only need 1 a day, they didn't do anything for my anxiety. If anything I was more anxious because of the allergy symptoms.

70% of heathy/shapey abs is always keeping them flexed. "letting the gut all hang out relaxed" trains the mussel that they are in the natural loose state. IMO always keep a tight gut and straight back while sitting, resting, eating, watching tv, on the train. IF you do this you'll see better results in any effort you put into shaping your mid section.
I have add three huge weight swings in my life (30lbs extra up and then down) and this has helped so much the second and third time getting back into shape.
also not a gym rat and trainer just a guy who knows he feels happier when my body is in shape.
I don't understand why women want guys that are all hard muscles. Must be like cozening up to a bag of rocks. No, I think a guy with softer, rounder features would be a better snuggle, more like a lost soft plushie from her youth that made her smile. (It's possible that I could be a little biased in my reasoning, however)
It works both ways. Give me a woman with curves. I'm not looking to get symmetric bruises on my pelvis because some skinny girl has hip bones sticking out. Modern media has everyone thinking that they have to have zero body fat, but a healthy weight for most people is 15-20% body fat. I don't work out, I just work, and I work a physically demanding job. The skinny gym bros are always talking about how hard they train and can't understand why girls aren't interested in them when the funny chubby guy gets the girls. My life doesn't revolve around the gym, I don't talk about that stuff to ”impress" girls, and I know how to cook good food.

Weather you like your body ripped and muscular or soft and curvy, this is good and healthy advice and it works. I've been doing it since grad school when I went to gymnastics. Early on it became a habbit to flex my tummy muscles almost at all times because it felt weird and uncomfortable to stand up with a loose tummy. I'm in my late 30's now, it still feels weird and I'm still doing it. Eventhough my body is a bit curvy, my core and belly wall are strong. It's good for your posture as well.
Medicinal mushrooms (not psilocybin). start em now.
i put out a weekly mushroom research newsletter and cover 20-30 studies every week about how extracts from shiitake, turkey tail, lion's mane, reishi, chaga, oysters all have so, so many benefits like anti-inflammatory, nervous system regulation, brain cell growth, anti-tumor behavior, cholesterol management.
western research is still in petri dishes and animal models right now, but with the sheer number of positive effects and minimal side effects i read regarding how the bioactive compounds work in our bodies, i am a believer.
The only mushrooms I eat are foraged from a bin in the supermarket, thank you.😊
Mushrooms are one of the old foraging foods our ancestors used to eat. So I can understand why this would work
Um, I'm not undoing 10,000 years of evolution just to die from a death cap.
I wonder is there is data as to how many people die each year because they considered themselves to be experts in selecting wild mushrooms.
However, psilocybin has been proven effective for helping with alcohol addiction.
Even though RFK Jr. is a dangerous idiot about a lot of things, he also is apparently going to push for legalizing medicinal psychoactive shrooms -- and I hope it happens. They're actually one of the safer 'd***s' out there, and imo, unfairly demonized.

I knew a guy who insisted on getting a bidet for his new home. I think it was because he was too fat to reach his behind.
On the bidet packaging on our first bidet, there was a customer review that said, "You'll now think about your life in distinct periods: BB and AB. Before bidet and after bidet." And I've found that it's so damn true.
If you have a headache, you can place a pencil in your mouth (horizontally like a dog with a stick) right behind your incisors (don't bite, just hold it) and 9/10 times it INSTANTLY relieves the headache pain. You'll still need to do something else to make the headache actually go away but the pain relief for me is instant. Once you get the hang of it, you can actually do it without the pencil. It's just the position of your jaw that does it.
The position of my jaw is often what causes my headaches. I clench my jaw when I'm stressed and it's also not in great alignment. I have to massage the outside where my upper and lower jaw join to loosen it up. That's only one type of headache I get regularly though and I doubt this would work for most. In fact I just tried it for my sinus headache/earache and it made it hurt more.
There's a muscle in your jaw that will go into spasms when you clench your teeth over a period of time. If you can learn to relax your jaw, a lot of tension headaches can be avoided. Getting rid of the rest of them might have to do with getting rid of your spouse, your kids, your job, or winning the lottery. Your mileage will vary.

When you are out in the cold, do not tighten your muscles and resist the urge to shiver.
you will feel warmer because muscle tension generates heat as a byproduct of its contractions, so when muscles are relaxed, they produce less heat, making you feel slightly cooler in comparison.
essentially, relaxed muscles are less metabolically active and therefore generate less heat.
i learned this in cold weather training in the military years ago.
I'm very confused by this one. If muscle tension generates heat, isn't that what you *want* in cold weather? Why would you want to leave muscles relaxed if that makes you feel cooler?
I swear, I thought this was contradicting itself.. but somehow I still know what they mean shivering is made to warm the body. So don’t fight the shiver.

99% of basic childhood illness can be cured with cold mom hands and a cool wash rag to the forehead. The other 1% 7up and saltines.
They are cured by time and rest, not crackers and cold hands. The symptoms might be alleviated by these things, but they don't eliminate the cause.
This rather assumes that many other possible childhood illnesses (polio, diphtheria, mumps, measles etc) have been prevented by vaccination at an earlier time. Beware survivor bias !

Anything to do with supplements or electrolytes needs to be checked either your GP. Throwing your system out of balance if you don’t genuinely need a particular vitamin or mineral added to your diet can be genuinely dangerous, and even lifethreatening. Calcium, for instance, seems harmless, but can be very harmful if taken via supplement form in excess to one’s needs.
Far too many of these fall into the "I've read this on the internet, so it must be true, won't I look clever reposting it" category. Many are total nonsense, only a very few actually contain anything worthwhile that you didn't already know.

Every day, practice standing on one (bare) foot with your eyes closed, not holding on to anything. Then switch feet. This is a valuable investment in your balance. Anywhere from 30-60 seconds on each side is great. This has been shown in research to be a marker of good health.
