It might sound counterintuitive, but drinking coffee (or another caffeinated beverage) right before a nap can actually make it more effective. This combines the rest of the nap with the time needed for the caffeine to kick in. There are all sorts of similar facts and hacks that ultimately most folks don’t know but which would be pretty useful to implement.

Someone asked “What is a crazy body life hack everyone should know?” and people shared their best ideas. So get comfortable as you read through, maybe take some notes and be sure to add your own ideas and thoughts in the comments below.

Older woman practicing body life hacks with stretching exercises at home on a yoga mat. If you think it would be at all challenging (a simple rule would be anyone over age 50), get fully on the floor and back up again every single day.

You really don't want to fall and then realize that you can't get yourself back up and to your phone for help. Practicing so that it isn't terribly difficult ensures that you will still be able to do it even if you have a mild injury from the fall.

Let's not downvote Brian; let's send him some encouragement instead. That's rough, dude. I'm older than you and also have a hard time (arthritis, back injury, fat), but this is good advice. If it helps, drag 2 straight-back chairs into a large space, lay down between them, and then use them to help yourself back up. Do it everyday and after a while, you won't need both chairs; and after a longer while, you won't need any chair at all. I started doin this after I fell on the sidewalk in front of my house and couldn't get up without crawling to my front steps, and using those to get up.

Yeah, one of the signs of reasonable health is to be able to get off the floor without using your hands (when I was young (I am 76) I was able to stand from a cross-legged position by just standing straight up - now I can barely get my a*s off the ground). So I whole-heartedly agree

Just realised how lucky I am. I'm 70 and recently laminated all the floors in our bungalow. I played semi-pro football/soccer with guys who have since had knees and hips replaced. Allied to this I was a carpet fitter for 25 years, on my knees every day. So I should count my blessings.

The timing of this post is crazy. I was telling my husband I need sit on the floor because there might be a day I can’t do it. Also, just started climbing the stairs. Only went up/down once. Knees cracking and painful.

If your knees / other joints hurt when you stand up, consider taking TURMERIC. I'd heard folks talk about it but I get limited help from herbal supplements and kind of poo-pooed it in my mind. But going from kneeling to standing my knees hurt so bad I gave it a try. Been taking a few years now. Made a huge difference in pain reduction. I was honestly surprised. Cheaper in bulk but I'm not fond of the taste so for me it is the Kirkland (Costco) capsules - one morning / one night. If you are suffering joint pain - give it it a try.

crawl on hands and knees to a heavy chair / sofa and lever yourself up from there. It's very difficult to get up if you're on your butt or your back; much easier from on your tummy

I've heard of training for older people in which they learn not to stumble: in a safe environment, PTs push them so they have to restore their balance over and over, gradually increasing the difficulty. In otherwise healthy older adults I believe it's been found to reduce subsequent falls

I was just discussing this with my daughter. She said there are studies that show in countries where people tend to do daily stretching, the life expectancy is a bit longer. Not sure if that is true but I do try to get on the floor and stretch every day, if only to make sure I can get back up again.

The exercise in the photo is one that bends the spine at an extreme angle and can lead to a herniated disk in the lower back. There are better exercises to stretch the hamstrings that keep the spine straight. Any kind of head to knee stretch that bends the spine at extreme angles will likely weaken the disk.

Stretching is such an important part of being fit without too much effort people just need to take their time and do it slowly

Fresh fruits and nuts as a crazy body life hack for healthy eating on a wooden board with coffee and tulips. Idk if it’s “crazy” but everyone should know you can change your palate.

Your palate is the kinds of foods you like. Many people can find themselves unhealthy because of a bad diet that comes from disliking vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, herbs, and other healthy unprocessed foods.

If you only ever eat spaghetti-Os, Goldfish crackers, chicken tenders and sweets as a kid (and as an adult), you might have a hard time eating healthy when you need to worry about it.

You are not stuck with the palate you’re born with. You can train it to like healthier things. Also you can train your kids’ palates, or at least try.

One way to get into healthier food is to order it at a sit-down restaurant, if you get a chance to. They can make salads and vegetable-based meals taste much better than you’d think they’d taste. It can teach you simple combinations that go together for you to imitate, like finding out that basil and tomatoes and olive oil go together.

Another gateway is to find one or two vegetables you hate less than all the others and start adding them in when you make food you like. Like putting broccoli in macaroni and cheese or getting mushrooms on your pizza. Or dipping pretzels in hummus, and hot Cheetos in plain yogurt. Don’t worry that it’s not any different calorie-wise. The point is to train yourself to be ok with unfamiliar tastes and textures. The calories take care of themselves if you get healthy foods to be part of what you like.

Don’t underestimate the power of ranch dressing to make things taste good.

Maybe you have sensory issues about food. So experiment with ways to cut things up. When I was trying to eat better, I learned that I didn’t hate onions when they were diced really small, and not too many were used. But long pieces or rings I just couldn’t do. Until years later I could, because eating them in a way that was comfortable for me gradually turned into me liking them.

Take it slow and be near a bathroom. It’s normal for healthy foods to make your digestion weird at first if you don’t normally eat like that.

This is a big one that a lot of adults are unwilling to change. I know so many people in thier 40s who eat like they're 12, it's ridiculous. Your tastes change and you can train them, but you need to expose yourself to new things.

Very true. You might also discover that you hate certain stuff when it's prepared one way and love it when it's prepared a different way. For instance, brussel sprouts that are baked taste like a completely different vegetable than when they're boiled. I used to think I hated eggplant, but that's because my parents always cooked it in a sauce, making it quite wet and plump. But when it's baked/fried in a more dry way, I absolutely adore it and it is now my favorite vegetable. You can also train yourself to like a lower amount of sugar or salt. After a while, you will enjoy things that you at the moment think need more sugar/salt, and the things that you now like will taste way too sweet or way too salty to you by that time. I know from my own experience that it can make a huge difference.

Pretty much everything boiled tastes less good than baked. Boiling usually involves releasing part of the flavor to the water, while baking intensifies the flavors. If anything, replace boiling with steaming :)

The moment that changed my husband's mindset was when I told him if he didn't like it he could spit it out. "What's the worst that would happen? You would have had something gross in your mouth for 5 seconds." I think giving yourself permission to spit things out, not like things, or waste a little food, can make a big difference.

I'm just wondering if you felt different in any other way? After cutting out sugar, that is. Did you notice a difference in energy, or even in inflammation? I don't mean to be intrusive, but I've been reading a lot about the effects of processed sugar on the body, and I'm curious about other people's experiences.

This also works for tastes in people. No, I don't mean you should marry someone analogous to Brussels sprouts. But if you find yourself attracted, for instance, to "bad boys" or "crazy girls," and wish it were otherwise, maybe you could do some introspection as to why.

Parents - make your kids eat variety. I totally get kids are different and some lean hard into liking / not liking this or that. My mom didn't force me to eat portions of things I didn't like BUT - the two main rules were 1. Whatever things she made I had to take at least one bite. 2. She didn't cater to me with alternate meals. She made the same thing for dinner for all of us and I could eat it or not eat. So as an example - I didn't like bell peppers when I was young. If the meal included them, I could take one bite and fill up on the parts of the meal I liked. The result is I grew up with a really well rounded palette. The foods I didn't like became 'okay' after a while and some of them I actively like. I still chuckle to myself when adult me buys bell peppers on purpose. :)

I totally agree with this. In my very limited personal experience most adults who don't like veg didn't have to eat them as kids. Most adults who like veggies ate them (by choice or not-like you said, at least try a bite) as kids. I LOVE veggies, but resented my parents when I was a picky child. Thanks mom and dad!

The foods I hate taste to me the same way gasoline would taste to you. I don't know why people have such a hard time understanding this. You can take a green bean and gold plate it, put sugar and honey on it, grill it, or cut it up into teeny pieces. I'd still taste every one of those pieces and my first reaction is to spit it out. I eat a lot more food now that I'm older, but what I didn't like when I was younger, I still don't like, no matter what I do. If it doesn't taste good, it doesn't taste good, so give it a rest and quit telling me to "try it, you'll like it".

That's how many foods used to taste to me, for example, olives. Disgusting. Foul. I forced myself to try them again and again and the taste grew less gross, then neutral, then good, now I LOVE olives. As the OP said, you CAN learn to adjust your palate but it takes time and effort and trying things you don't like repeatedly.

"Depends" Did nothing for me when I had rods down my spine to fix multiple broken vertebrae together with practically every rib broken, leading to drains in both side of the chest due to collapsed lungs. Like many people with severe back injuries I would not have been able to move my head up if I tried; doing so could easily have resulted in further injury so I was virtually immobilised.

Placing an ice pack on your chest can almost immediately relieve the need to throw up in some circumstances (maybe not for food poisoning or stomach virus, but things like motion sickness, panic attack, or medication nausea). The reason this works is it stimulates your vagus nerve. Learned this firsthand when I was about to vomit in a hospital and the nurse placed a cold pack on my chest. Instantly felt fine again.

Zofran/Ondansetron is a lifesaver provided you have some on hand and take it well before the point vomiting becomes inevitable, but without it, or to buy time to get to a bathroom... Yeah, here in Canada we like to brag about our universal health care. Have a health issue? No problem, just go to the doctor. Free of charge! Oh, unless your problem is your teeth or your eyes, in that case you'll need to pay up if you want anything done. Can't? Oh well, f**k you then.

I was fanatical about my dental health. But once I got pregnant with my first, it went downhill fast. I ended up in the hospital with micro accesses in all my top teeth. Didn't know it at the time, but I had gone septic. 5 days later, they called the dental surgeon back to remove them under my medical insurance. 10 years later, I finally got the bottoms removed. 1 year wait for dentures only to discover they made me throw up constantly. Get them adjusted 5 years later. Got cancer and chemo made them not fit. Take care of your teeth!

Had an orthodontist recommend flossing if you’re having sinus issues. As someone who can’t take sinus meds, it actually helps. I don’t know all the science behind it, but keeping the bacteria around your teeth down helps keep sinus infections down. I also just find the manipulation of my gums helps get fluid moving in my face. And my sinuses make my gums sore, so flossing is like itching them, and the toothpaste after is soothing.

At the risk of getting too techno... There is only one kind of Magnesium. It is an element (o.k. a couple of isotopes too, but that is really splitting hairs) The thing you are experiencing is how the Magnesium is delivered. Your body does not digest elemental magnesium. it has to be attached to something else. It is called Chelation. It is what the magnesium is chelated to that is causing the other effects. The same is true of any metal, including Calcium and Iron (Yes, Calcium is a metal). The way that it is chelated drives how your body absorbs it and reacts to it.

But there’s distance between thumb and pinky kinda half trying to stretch, there’s the distance at a so-called average stretch, there’s the distance after trying slightly too hard and there’s the distance whilst trying to the extreme. They all vary by about a centimetre, and it’s not possible to know for sure which kind of stretch you have done.

Man wearing a cap drinks water outdoors, showcasing crazy body life hacks for staying hydrated. You can make 'shocking and crazy' improvements to how you feel by doing three simple things.

    1. Drink enough water to stay hydrated - this isn't 'carry a bottle around', this is more like 'your pee should be a little bit yellow and very clear'.

    2. Sleep. For best practice, sleep with no stimulus - no noise in the background, no lights, mobile phone, etc.

    3. Get some intentional exercise in daily.

A fourth is avoiding processed foods, but that is usually more difficult than the first three.

Basically, i look like a nice druggie, but still a druggie. BUT, when i carry my water bottle, people assume im dressed like that for my gymclothes or excercising. They stop crossing the strrees when they meet me. So, social and pfysical excercise indeed.

It's not that hard to avoid processed foods. You can make all your meals at home from natural ingredients. There will always be some processed food (e.g. ham, cereal, bread) but you can even phase those out. Processed foods are a killer.

My heart was beating at 160 while resting. Drove my self to the ER as the terrible insurance from my old company would force me to pay for the ambulance. Once there, they grabbed me and did an EKG, then said they will get me a wheelchair. Told them I could walk to the bed. Told me to breath through a tube and slapped an ice pack over my eyes. They hit me with some meds, heart rate would go down for a bit and then come back up. Then the doctor came back and said "just got off the call with the cardiologist, we're going to have to shock you". Hit me with propophel and told me it might burn a bit but let him know when I started feeling drowsy. Didn't feel the burn, but then I started to feel drowsy and told him. He asked me to put my head all the way on the pillow, which I did and then he said "NOW!". And my chest goes flying up into the air. Got it permanently taken care of later, in and out of the hospital the same day.

But its true for overeating processed food and to much unhealthy fats. But, if you add the right kind of fat, your need for sugar will go down. Sugar is bad, but good fat is essential for a healthy body.

I have lower spine arthritis. I was surprised when the physical therapist have me all the back exercises. He instructed me to do them just to the point of pain and then back off. Kind of hang out breathing deeply at that edge of pain point and then relax. Repeating the stretch this way I found the tissue gradually warms up and relaxes. After a number of days the arthritis will lessen and one can get fully into the stretches. Most chronic back pain is from lack of exercise.

I had to stop doing the plank (even though I was getting pretty good at it), because I realized I had Diastasis Recti (also known as rectus abdominis diastasis, a condition that occurs when the two rectus abdominis muscles in the front of the belly separate). Women often get this after pregnancy, and planking will cause those muscles to separate further. So for instance, when you do a sit-up (which I also had to stop doing), you just have one muscle in the middle of your belly that engages. There are things you can do to correct this (other than surgery, which is sometimes also done), but it's annoying.

According to experts, planking for a minute is useless and increases the risk of shoulder and other injuries. A half-minute plank or plank variations or lighter/easier planks are more effective if the full plank is still not possible. Long planking is just stupid. Like some silly competition about who pees further or longer.

Person using a chair for a unique exercise pose, demonstrating a creative body life hack. If you have lower back pain or sciatica try gluteus medius burnouts. Use a chair or table to steady yourself and raise one leg straight out to the side as high as you can and hold that until it feels like your hip is on fire and trying to cramp. Repeat on the other side. It sounds crazy but it can eliminate lower back pain instantly.

This statement is simple, true, and correct. I quit a job that was eating me alive with stress. I had no opportunity to manage my day to day. I now work in a similar job. But I control my day to day. Yes, the pay is lower. But the S.U.C.I.D.AL thoughts are gone and I feel 100% better. So Yes. Its a simple statement. But 16+ years at my old job took so many years off my life I am 100% sure. So a mindset change can make a huge difference.

Nearly everything you read on stress includes the "advice" to avoid stress or stressful situations. But the biggest sources of stress (for most people) are: money, work, relationships, "major life events", health... How exactly are we supposed to "let go" of things like that?

Father and daughter enjoying a meal together, with watermelon and sunflowers in the background, relating to crazy body life hacks. If you start eating at set times each day, pretty soon you won’t feel hungry except at those times. Your stomach and gut biome produces the hormone ghrelin, which causes you to feel hungry, and the production of it becomes entrained to the times when you usually eat. For instance, if you think that you can’t go to bed without eating a snack before (which is actually not a good idea), if you can just tough it out for a few days, the urge (“need” lol) to eat before bed will pretty much just disappear. Doing this also makes it much much easier to resist mindless snacking and is much healthier for your body for a bunch of reasons, blood sugar spikes being a big one.

Eh, a lot depends on individual and on food. For example, for me 2 oz of Brie for breakfast makes me feel satiated longer than a cup of oatmeal. Most likely blood sugar goes down after oats and make me hungry again, in 2 hrs.

YES. The exercises are simple and you can even do most of them (or variations) sitting in a recliner. Also - shoes with good arch support. For me it's Hoka tennis shoes. I got plantar fasciitis about three years ago. First (so far only) time. Suffered for weeks, got to the point it was painful to walk across parking lot from car to store. Thought - oh c**p - is this what the rest of my life is going to be like? Got diagnosed, found out it is common in older people. Attended a few physical therapy sessions. But you don't need in person PT. You can google up lots of helpful articles / videos showing you the simple exercises. Most are ones you can do anywhere like raising up on the balls of your feet. As OP notes - most of the exercises are stretching calve muscles, but also some side to side of the ankle.

Woman practicing a body hack, standing by a window, stretching back to relieve stress at home. Place hands palm down on a sturdy surface, push up while letting all the muscles in your abdominal, hips and legs go limp. It will decompress your spine from your neck down to the your tailbone. The tip that has really helped me is hanging from the door frame! Standing on tiptoes, reach up for the top of the door frame and hold. Work up to taking your feet off the floor. It strengthens your grip and decompresses the spine. Only do this if your house is well built though!

I started with cutting alcohol from Dec 1-25th. (I gave myself the option to drink something on Xmas, and I did) I thought I'd replace the alcohol with Diet Coke (another fave) but I ended up mostly drinking flavored seltzer water and tea over those 25 days. And, in those 25 days of sobriety, I lost a lot of my taste for sugar. win win win! Now I will work on keeping the sobriety and adding more straight water to my day. I try to start each day with a 16oz glass of water. Thanks for letting me share all this in a random comment! Have a great day!

I would look into the Low FODMAP diet. I have had problems with constipation since I was a kid. Mum always accused me of not having enough fruit or water even when I did. Certain fruits can affect the bowel differently for people with IBS or similar and one I know affects me is apples. No matter how many I ate I still had issues. I tried going Low FODMAP (but I didn't see the doctor or do the full exclusion/re-introduction, just changed one or two things at a time) and it's made a big difference.

I grew up with being asked, "When was the last time you saw a white horse?" for curing hiccups and it worked so well I just have to ask myself the question now and it works. The first time I tried it on my oldest son (when he was old enough to actually think about it) he asked me what kind of witchcraft that was when I waited a moment and asked if he still had the hiccups. I tried startling him once to "reboot" the diaphragm but that didn't go over well at all, lol. We'll stick with thinking about white horses.

Ginger is probably for nausea. Vegetables are probably for fiber so things pass through quickly. Endometriosis, andometriosis, PCOS, etc can be causes of period pain. Diagnosis and some treatments might help, but honestly, there's still a lack of research and investment in uterus/ovarian health.

Have the hiccups? Inhale as much air as you possibly can, and then inhale a little more lol. Then hold it all in for about 10-15 seconds, and exhale. Most of the time this will get rid of the hiccups on the first try, but 2-3 tries basically guarantees it.

Most of the time for hiccups, I can stop them if I sit down, close my eyes, and just focus on breathing very shallow until they're gone. For more persistent ones, I do the trick of drinking multiple small sips of water while plugging my nose (and thus not taking in any breaths) until *almost* to the point where it starts getting scary, like you are suffocating. And if that doesn't work, the last resort is to breathe into a plastic bag until they go away -- but again, this often means doing it until you feel like you are suffocating (and you let in just a tiny bit of air into the bag near the end, so you don't actually suffocate). Hiccups are crazy.

Cure for 'opera cough' (that violent cough that you can't stop) is to blow your nose several times very hard. It's often caused by a single drop of moisture from your sinuses that is trickling down your windpipe. Blow hard enough several times and you can blow it out your nose.

That only works if your panic attack is emotional (aka an anxiety attack). For many (myself included) panic attacks are neurochemical induced and will require chemistry to fix. IMHO, emotional panic attacks aren't even "real" panic attacks, they are anxiety attacks (still really traumatic, just different). For a real panic attack you have a serious serotonin and dopamine imbalance, generally from a past traumatic head injury. You won't be taking a cold shower because in a "real" panic attack, you are immobilized. you can't move.

If that works for you then you do not have a panic attack. Maybe some anxiety but never a panic attack, in this pretty much nothing of all those well meaned ' hacks' will work. It will either run its course or you take some of the hard stuff. Suffered from panic attacks for almost 3 years thanks to some undiagnosed thyriod problem and i tried pretty much everything. It maybe works for somebody who thinks: oh! That is i think a panic attack but not for somebody who is in full ' i am going to die' mode. The only thing that sadly helped was calling the ambulance or going into ER and have a proffesional telling you that you are surely not dying. True for me at least.

The only trick that ever helped me only worked if you caught it early, when it was building. Going up and down the stairs as many times as possible to burn off excess adrenaline (I think? Or other stress hormones?) in the body helped a little tiny bit in reducing the severity, IF I caught it early enough. I totally agree with you. This would never work in the middle of a raging panic attack.

For me, the best way to stop a panic attacks is to scream "NO" as loud as you can (in your head, not out loud) then scream even louder. When you're concentrating on making your scream as loud as you can without being able to hear it, it takes the panic attack out of your mind. I hope this helps someone else, panic attacks are horrible

People walking past a parked motorcycle by a building, illustrating urban life hacks. When you are walking and someone else is walking toward you in the opposite direction, direct your focus on the side you intend to pass on, on where you want to go.

they will subconsciously pick up on your body language and you'll never do that awkward "oh sorry excuse me oops" side step thing again.

Or just walk on the side you intend to walk on. My observation at least in the USA is in situations with pedestrians going both ways (sidewalks, the aisle in the mall) most people walk like they drive. As in, most people will walk to the side that is their right. (I am mildly curious if folks in left hand driving countries tend to do the opposite). The rare times that someone isn't over far enough, I just stop for a second and let them walk around me.

Cell phone zombies make it hard for me to even get the oncoming person to even notice I exist. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't also ignoring the unspoken agreed upon rule of which side of the sidewalk to keep on. (Here in Japan it's left. Keep to the left!) But I do a little hand tipped to the side I want to go to along with the slight shoulder twist just on the off chance they aren't oblivious.

Be careful about using a heating pad to much on muscles. If you use it on muscles to much it can weaken your muscles. In the past my back right hip would hurt and still does and I use a heating pad on it quite a bit in the past. I believe it weaken my right hip muscle. Before I retired last year my hip was hurting and wanted to find out what was wrong. Went to the doctor had x rays done on it and was sent to a therapist. Had me do some exercise on them. Helped out. Give me exercise at home to do. Started to do them and it helped but end up being to lazy to do them so stopped. That is my experience anyway. My hip still hurts but manageable.

Probably not caused by the heating pad. Heating the muscle and tissue will relax them and improve the blood circulation to that area. But within minutes of discontinuing the heat, the tissue goes back to its normal state. The problem all along was probably weak muscles caused by a sedentary life style. But heating inflamed joints will make inflammation worse. Ice packs are best for that. If you use a heating pad for an inflamed joint to get the muscles to relax, follow that with an ice pack to reduce the inflammation.

Caffeine is not as benign as many make it out to be. My wife snores and has bad nights sleeping, probably undiagnosed sleep apnea, which she refuses to consider. So she counters by drinking a pot of coffee through out the day. Since she started coffee consumption she has become the most irritable, complaining person I know. It is like a low level amphetamine addiction.

Agree. I used to do yoga. The head to knee pose bends the lowest portion of the spine to an extreme angle that will weaken the disk and cause it to herniate. I had surgery for that. The plow bends the cervical spine at an extreme unnatural angle and will herniate the cervical disk. Been there. Done that. Steroid injections in the cervical spine to deal with that are not fun. Many of the exercises physical therapists gave me are from Pilates and strengthens the core muscles, which are what actually hold up your spine. Yoga mostly stretches the tissue where Pilates strengthens it.

Vitamins on a dark surface, representing crazy body life hacks for health and wellness. Many people have nutrient deficiencies and do not know it. Regularly go to a general physician ( ig standard doctor ) and get full blood work done, specifically making sure they test for nutritional deficiencies. Properly addressing and solving a deficiency has WAY more impact than adding in 'extra' nutrition to perform, think, sleep, etc better. On that note, multivitamins are dope, use them.

To double down on that, statistically most of you reading this are deficient in vitamin D. Even if you are outside a lot. Yes, really! Folks who work outside all day are still regularly deficient.

blood glucose levels spike approximately 90 minutes after eating. physical activity and or exercise around then will cause your body to not store as much food as body fat.

Digestion inhibits sleep, especially deep sleep. Don't eat within a few hours of bed time.

Also, generally speaking movements as simple as 'air squats' ( squatting without weight ) for 30 or 60 seconds periodically during the day are enough to impact metabolism, such as the 90 min mark I cited.

Generally, evolution has created many reactions to different situations that cause our bodies to either grow more fat to store long term energy, or to instead grow and develop organs and muscles. Learn them to more efficiently achieve your goals, whatever those goals may be.

cold and heat exposure are consistently having more and more scientific support of substantial health benefits. So ice baths and saunas, or even potentially as little as a super hot shower ending in 30-60 seconds of cold

Agree with Betsy, unfortunately my doctor would laugh in my face if I'd ask for tests without actually experiencing problems. I live in a rich West-European country, but our doctors are too overworked to help all the patients who have problems NOW, to spend time on preventing future problems in people who are seemingly healthy at the moment.

Where do you live that you can go in to a doctor and order them around? Where I am you explain your symptoms and politely wait to see if they care enough to order tests. They order tests if THEY decide they are needed. It's completely NOT up to the patient. And this sounds like you're not even sick. Makes no sense to wait a month to see a doctor when you're not even sick.

It's not that difficult. You just tell your regular doctor during your annual physical.Do you want a full panel of blood work done and part of what you would like to know is if there are any nutritional deficiencies you should address.

Just to take up the vitamin D headline, no, even the worse estimates tend to top out at around 40% of the US population being deficient, and there's a strong correlation with poor diet and obesity. Other parts of the world with better diet are much less prone to it.

I totally agree with Yaya, Pitssburgh and Betsy, same in my EU experience. My father got to the point where he was able to get a blood test and a regular checkup from his GP, but he was 75 then. In my case my GP would not listen to me and just send me home.

I go to the swimming hall thrice a week in virtual aqua aerobics and after that I swim two small laps in the 9°C cold pool and take a sauna for a while. The feeling is stress-free, even a little euphoric, and in the evening the feeling is sleepy and relaxed. The same can be done by alternating cold and warm showers in the morning. Or if you have your own sauna, then with a sauna and short cold showers. The bravest go swimming in the hole made in the ice in the lake. It was a little too much for me in the cold winter wind.

50 Wild Body Hacks That Surprisingly Actually Work Sit like you’re driving in your car. Cross your ankles. Push your knees outwards. This will pop your lower back.

Did this on accident when I was 7 months pregnant with my second child. I had been driving for over an hour and was in dead stop traffic for 20 minutes so the put the car in park to stretch my legs for a second. I had my ankles crossed and stretched my legs outwards and I heard and felt the biggest pop I’ve ever in my life. It scared the c**p out of me bc I was very pregnant. Turns out it helped *alot*! Before, my tailbone/hips were stiff and could barely move. Afterwards, it was like a whole new lower back!! I’ve been trying to get my husband to do the same because he has a lot of lower back pain, but he’s stubborn. Maybe one of these days.

Of course stretching and drinking water probably prevents this stuff but I’m stubborn too so.

Hands warming by a fire, demonstrating a practical body hack for staying warm in cold environments. If your fingers are cold put your arms against your body to the sides as if you were a little soldier standing at attention. Then with your wrists still touching your pelvis lift your fingers up so that your fingers point to the side. Then start shrugging your shoulders up and down and you can feel the warm blood rushing to your fingertips.

And yes, also wore fingerless gloves, (lacy ones are enough in autumn/spring) but the cuffs (is that the right word?) start to annoy me after a while (moving the mouse and the feeling of the cuffs just on /over the palm of my hands becomes very uncomfortable.

Or take a mouthful of food, chew thoroughly and just when you're ready to swallow, pop that pill in and "coat it" with food, then swallow. You won't gag because your brain is expecting something textured, unlike drinking water.

FOOD. I have no problem water or food but years ago a friend taught me the food trick and it really is the easiest method IMO. Yes to what Betsy said about chew until ready to swallow - then insert pills, 'mush to cover' then swallow. Soft foods like a banana or yogurt work really well but so can a bite of sandwich or whatever. Especially true if you have to take a larger than usual pill - such as certain antibiotics.

The best technique I’ve seen is to place the pill on the floor of your mouth right behind your front teeth, then take a regular drink of water (a normal mouthful, not a sip). If it works, what happens is that the pill will float up and go down with the water, and you may not even notice it. Too many people who have trouble swallowing pills put them on their tongue, which triggers taste buds and salivation, causing you to taste the pill and the pill to start dissolving, both of which can inhibit your ability to swallow it (because pills meant to be swallowed whole almost always taste nasty). By putting it on the floor of your mouth, you can avoid tasting it and delay salivation.

It might have to do with the nerve that runs under your nose[ your face is pretty complex b/c of the nerves that need to run from one side of your head to the other (your left hemisphere controls the right side etc and so the nerves have to make this complicated trip)

I think you'd need to show how that nerve controls the flow and/or clotting of blood in the affected are for your theory to stand up. If it does work, and like nearly all of these I'm very sceptical, then it's more likely a result of muscle contractions around the blood vessels being initiated by the pressure.

Local folk remedy for stopping diarrhea: A spoonful of powdered (not ground) coffee with some lemon juice squeezed into it is swallowed in one gulp followed immediately by a whole glass of water drunk as quickly as possible. It stops the runs immediately. I asked an MD about this. He explained why it works. He also didn't recommend it but said it was OK in an emergency.😀

Long-term, you need to adjust your diet, but short-term..... put a large glass of water by the side of your bed before going to sleep. Instead of a glass, keep a (reusable, not single-use) water bottle near your bed. A glass of water will start to taste funny after some time sitting out (I've heard that's due to it collecting dust and possibly bacteria). Any time I wake up to visit the bathroom, I always take a little sip of water as I come back to bed. And then some more upon waking.

Wish I could reply directly to McKenzy, but just wanted to correct their declaration that "over half of the country voted for trump." 77.3 million voted for him. There are 332.9 million Americans. So about 23% of the country voted for him. As a percentage of voters, 49.9% voted for trump and 48.4% voted for harris. Beyond the factual error, and this is pure speculation, I'd be willing to bet McKenzy was ok with the Let's Go Brandon/F**k Joe Biden chants (or at least never told anyone doing that to be supportive of their country and its elected leader and to "get over it").

Man practicing body hacks by the pool, holding onto a ladder under the sun. 70% of heathy/shapey abs is always keeping them flexed. "letting the gut all hang out relaxed" trains the mussel that they are in the natural loose state. IMO always keep a tight gut and straight back while sitting, resting, eating, watching tv, on the train. IF you do this you'll see better results in any effort you put into shaping your mid section.

I have add three huge weight swings in my life (30lbs extra up and then down) and this has helped so much the second and third time getting back into shape.

It works both ways. Give me a woman with curves. I'm not looking to get symmetric bruises on my pelvis because some skinny girl has hip bones sticking out. Modern media has everyone thinking that they have to have zero body fat, but a healthy weight for most people is 15-20% body fat. I don't work out, I just work, and I work a physically demanding job. The skinny gym bros are always talking about how hard they train and can't understand why girls aren't interested in them when the funny chubby guy gets the girls. My life doesn't revolve around the gym, I don't talk about that stuff to ”impress" girls, and I know how to cook good food.

Weather you like your body ripped and muscular or soft and curvy, this is good and healthy advice and it works. I've been doing it since grad school when I went to gymnastics. Early on it became a habbit to flex my tummy muscles almost at all times because it felt weird and uncomfortable to stand up with a loose tummy. I'm in my late 30's now, it still feels weird and I'm still doing it. Eventhough my body is a bit curvy, my core and belly wall are strong. It's good for your posture as well.

I wonder is there is data as to how many people die each year because they considered themselves to be experts in selecting wild mushrooms.

Even though RFK Jr. is a dangerous idiot about a lot of things, he also is apparently going to push for legalizing medicinal psychoactive shrooms -- and I hope it happens. They're actually one of the safer 'd***s' out there, and imo, unfairly demonized.

Or get a portable travel bidet. A squeeze bottle with a nozzle designed to spray your bits clean. Wouldn't have my bathroom without it.

My apartment complex does not allow bidets to be installed. I suspect they must have had someone put one in and it leaked to the apartment below.

I knew a guy who insisted on getting a bidet for his new home. I think it was because he was too fat to reach his behind.

On the bidet packaging on our first bidet, there was a customer review that said, "You'll now think about your life in distinct periods: BB and AB. Before bidet and after bidet." And I've found that it's so damn true.

Child demonstrates a life hack by holding a pencil with teeth and giving a thumbs up, showcasing crazy body life hacks. If you have a headache, you can place a pencil in your mouth (horizontally like a dog with a stick) right behind your incisors (don't bite, just hold it) and 9/10 times it INSTANTLY relieves the headache pain. You'll still need to do something else to make the headache actually go away but the pain relief for me is instant. Once you get the hang of it, you can actually do it without the pencil. It's just the position of your jaw that does it.

The position of my jaw is often what causes my headaches. I clench my jaw when I'm stressed and it's also not in great alignment. I have to massage the outside where my upper and lower jaw join to loosen it up. That's only one type of headache I get regularly though and I doubt this would work for most. In fact I just tried it for my sinus headache/earache and it made it hurt more.

There's a muscle in your jaw that will go into spasms when you clench your teeth over a period of time. If you can learn to relax your jaw, a lot of tension headaches can be avoided. Getting rid of the rest of them might have to do with getting rid of your spouse, your kids, your job, or winning the lottery. Your mileage will vary.

Woman pouring tea from a red teapot into a matching cup, illustrating crazy body life hacks over a meal. You are physiologically weaker when looking at something pink vs. something red. It will work with something as small as a toy teapot, as long as you're at least semi focused on it. Freaked me the heck out when I first had it done to me as a cheap little bar trick.

Woman outside in the snow, embracing a cup for warmth, demonstrating a crazy body life hack. When you are out in the cold, do not tighten your muscles and resist the urge to shiver.

you will feel warmer because muscle tension generates heat as a byproduct of its contractions, so when muscles are relaxed, they produce less heat, making you feel slightly cooler in comparison.
essentially, relaxed muscles are less metabolically active and therefore generate less heat.

i learned this in cold weather training in the military years ago.

I'm very confused by this one. If muscle tension generates heat, isn't that what you *want* in cold weather? Why would you want to leave muscles relaxed if that makes you feel cooler?

I swear, I thought this was contradicting itself.. but somehow I still know what they mean shivering is made to warm the body. So don’t fight the shiver.

Or, put on another tee, preferably long sleeved. I wear at least 2 layers+coat in winter. Long sleeve T, short sleeve T, flannel (if it's REALLY cold), coat.

Person using a shower with water streaming down, backlit by sunlight. Crazy body life hacks concept. Cold showers, daily, for at least two weeks, starts reprograming your brain into a sense of confidence like you've never seen. The only time I ever felt this effect was with c***ine (but without the overthinking and the following crash).

They are cured by time and rest, not crackers and cold hands. The symptoms might be alleviated by these things, but they don't eliminate the cause.

This rather assumes that many other possible childhood illnesses (polio, diphtheria, mumps, measles etc) have been prevented by vaccination at an earlier time. Beware survivor bias !
