Folks Online Point Out 35 Of The Most Disappointing Places They’ve Visited Or Would Never Want To Visit
Quick, close your eyes and think about the places that you’d love to visit one day, Pandas. Odds are that you instantly imagined those places, and that brought a smile to your faces. You might have thought about traveling across Iceland or Japan, or flying off to Paris, Rome, London, or New York. Or you might even be hyped about visiting some tiny town that practically nobody’s heard of. But let’s make things a bit more interesting, shall we?
What are some places that you’d avoid like the plague? It’s a tad more difficult, isn’t it? While you’re pondering this (possibly in front of a gigantic map of the world on the wall), have a scroll and read some of the thoughts that members of the r/AskReddit community shared on this very question.
Someone asked them about the countries they’d never visit, and these internet users were very candid about where they’d hate to end up. You’ll find their opinions and arguments below.

Any country where in law I, as a woman, am considered a second class citizen (or else property). Which is an annoyingly extensive list.
Wow, that's actually becoming a truth. Sorry neighbor, come to Canada, we got you.
Load More Replies...Well you certainly don't want to visit Texas, especially if you're pregnant
Ah, people don't seem to get that if something goes wrong with the pregnancy while you're there, then tough luck and hope you survive to get to a state where you can get treated for miscarriage
Load More Replies...I agree. Most of my family are women. Most of my friends are, too. I just wouldn't feel right even if it was for business.
Same for me and also where I couldn't be arrested for being a lesbian
Any Muslim-majority theocratic state.
I am a woman.
misstisco I don't think it's so much prejudice but more of a safety concern. You could get arrested or attacked for not following female cultural traditions in a Muslim-popular country even if you are not Muslim. I'm also a woman.
I think that is kind of the point. It's a F'd up country if not following their "cultural traditions" is likely to get you arrested or attacked.
Load More Replies...Im a Muslim woman and I whole-heartdly agree. I just went to Saudi Arabia for Umrah, and let me just say, being a woman there is not pleasent. I had to walk a mile for each namaz in Medina to get to the harum becuase they only had one door open for woman at the very end, while every other door is open for men.
Its so sad-as a Muslim islam is a beautiful religion-extremists take it way too far
excellent point... cant think of any other religions obsessed with control of women's bodies.
I've been to Islamic countries and always felt safe. I respected their laws and dressed appropriately etc. Note, I usually travel alone. The worst place I've ever been to wasTurkey, where men were absolutely disgusting towards me.
My wife is Turkish and she would agree with you. Turkish men are terrible hypocrites when it comes to women.
Load More Replies...There are plenty of second and third world countries where it is very dangerous to be a woman- India, Africa, South America….
I am a woman too and this blanket statement is just rubbish. I've lived and travelled in Muslim countries and all have been wonderful.
I am a women and have spent the best part of 14 years working in such States. I dress respectfully to the socio-religipus cultural norms and accept this way - I don't agree with it BUT I am a guest in their backyard so to speak so I behave in a respectful and appropriate manner and have had very little problems. FYI I am an aid and humanitarian worker
You make it sound like women who had problems there provoked it by not respecting the cultural norms
Load More Replies...Which countries are we including? Theocratic state means that the religious deities are the supreme rulers of the government. Iran, Pakistan, Mauritania and Afghanistan are the only countries that meet this definition. Saudi Arabia does not (technically), as it is a monarchy.
Saudi Arabia is a muslim theocratic state, on the grounds that while it is also a monarchy, in it’s constitution it is stated that the king must rule according to Sharia and Quran, placing theocracy higher than the king. In other words, the king rules through divine guidance.

Dubai. The amount of culture-less decadence looks absolutely disgusting.
It's okay, but very expensive. I'm was there for work though, so my expenses were paid.
Load More Replies...I have seen the video where the daughter of the ruler of Dubai ran away and filmed herself talking about her treatment at home. It's under the #freelatifa. F**k that guy! He ain't getting my money! It may be a small and insignificant protest from me, but I don't want to give my hard earned money to someone like this. Also I heard of cases where TOURIST women were raped, and were arrested for premarital sex, and only had the choice between execution and marrying their rapist. Most could only be bailed out by human rights organisations by having them lie about having been raped. Gross. Disgusting.
Not to mention they use what is basically slave labour and anyone who isn't part of the ruling ethnic group can't be a citizen even if they're born there.
I lived there for most of my life-no trees, no culture, just tall gray buildings and walls. The only thing i recommend is Atlantis the hotel and waterpark that was awesome :)
A friend from childhood ended up in the Foreign Ministry in our country, and while still young, retired from the FM and got a 'real job' with Cisco. Like, national installations, that sort of thing. Primarily because he was British-Canadian and spoke fluent Mandarin, Cantonese, and some other variants. They stuck him in Dubai after the hostile takeover of government in Hong Kong, where he used to own a lot of real estate. Oops. Anyway, he said Dubai was like a factory with sad workers and a few 'board members' drinking too much expensive Cognac.
Any place that's just a mecca for shopping ogling luxuries is a hot no for me. If I want to see unattainably priced goods at a metaphorically cold, crowded place I'll just pop into the high end mall we have here.
Plus they’ve completely destroyed the coastal ecosystem by building those man-made islands. People use Dubai as an example of what not to do. The same way Scotland used Canada’s fish farms as an example of what not to do.
There were a few things at the top of most redditors’ minds. These internet users explained that they’re worried about safety, the low quality of life, and a country’s lack of respect for human rights.
Nobody wants to risk their lives unnecessarily. And some commenters felt like they’d be doing just that. But it’s not all based on just opinions and hearsay.
Any country whose Rule of Law is enforced by the religious folk.
"To many Americans, beliefs in God and Americanism has become synonymous. A 2015 survey found that 69% of respondents thought it was important to believe in God to be truly American. And Americans are expected to embrace national slogans such as In God We Trust and one nation, under God. 7 States Still Have Bans on Atheists Holding Office : Maryland, Arkansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas."
The religion and state should always be separated. That is the only way to rule rightfully and equally. (Although it doesn’t quarantee anything.) Also religious motives for making laws are in my opinion quite questionable, like the recent anti-abortion laws.
In Australia's last parliament 13 of the cabinet ministers were pentecostal, a religion practiced by only 1% of the population

I so wish I could visit Russia, I just don’t see it being safe for an American to visit anytime in the next few decades. The situation seems a bit North Korean, where an American visitor will just be framed for a crime if the government thinks they’d be useful as a bargaining chip.
Can we all report Annie Duke the bot, the spammers are annoying the hell out of me today!
I've been to Russia a few times and it was perfectly fine. The people are lovely, just like ordinary people anywhere else in the world. I never felt unsafe there. I wouldn't go there at the minute of course.
OMG. No one will touch you. No one will even care that you are American. People in Russia are usually friendly and ready to help foreigners (except Moscow, everyone is too busy there). We are not monsters, for Gods sake!
The concerns aren't with the Russian people, but with the Russian government.
Load More Replies...I visited Russia in the mid-90s. While it had problems to overcome after the fall of the USSR, I loved it there. Met some amazing people. Have wanted to go back but not very interested in that for the foreseeable future.
I used to love in Russia. As a Westerner the certain lack of rules and regulations made it an exciting place to live. There are good people and bad people there just like anywhere else.
I was lucky enough to visit St. Petersburg in 2018, and it was fabulous. The palaces and the history were amazing. The whole time, however, I kept looking at this glittering splendor and thinking about the vast majority of Russians who were starving and shivering, while a tiny percentage of the people (1%?) lived lives of gold and plenty. No wonder they revolted and started shooting the aristocrats.
North Korea

If I weren't an American, then I totally would for the mere fact that it is a glimpse into a whole other world.
But, since I'm an American, I don't want to end up as a bargaining chip for nuclear arms.
bromosa_mimosa added:
You shouldn't visit even if you were NOT American.
North Korea on paper is a country, but in reality it is a criminal organization. The goal is money. All of this other weird shit like wacky rules and nukes is just to keep people in line and nations on their toes. The goal is money for the top people.
Visiting North Korea helps them achieve these goals. You perpetuate human suffering for these "fringe" trips.
You would get a glimpse of what they want you have a glimpse of and then probably a glimpse of a reeducation camp
That´s being optimistic, given what happened to Warmbier. Solitary confinement and torture more like it.
Load More Replies...Many dictatorships are like this, designed only to make dictators and their close ones rich. This is accomplished by f.ex. keeping the people dumb and poor, and by alienating them from other countries. This is starting to sound like what is happening in Russia.
I hadn’t particularly wanted to visit before anyway, but since what happened to Otto Warmbier I’d definitely never, ever, ever go. And I still really want to know what actually happened to him, or even just the true reason why he was arrested (I don’t believe the official story that he went into a staff only area and stole a sign for a second) but I fear we’ll never find out.
I believe they staged it and arrested him then used him as a political p**n. Poor bloke was just a kid really

America. I'ld be so afraid to get shot
Don't be afraid. We're actually a very friendly country full of nice people and not everyone has guns. My dad did because he was a marine, and a friend does because he hunts, but that's it; no one else that I know has guns. Edit: I feel the need to clarify my comments above. Further down the thread I'm called naive and that I can't know if the people in my life carry guns. I'm 62 years old and have lived around the country at various times through my younger years, and I've met alot of people and experienced alot of life. When it comes to guns, I'm not naive. I know that we need gun control, I know that there are too many guns out and about, and too many idiots carrying them. But, many of us are trying to change that. The people that I mention above were/are gun owners. My now deceased dad occasionally took us target shooting and was always responsible when around guns. He taught us how to be safe around them and he kept them locked up. My friend locks up his rifles, and he lives alone. He only uses them for hunting when it's deer season. The hunting is something that I don't like and it bothers me. But I also know what a careful, responsible person he is. As far as knowing if other people have guns, you're right...I can't know everything, but I do know that my other family members and my friends are gun-free.
Where do you live? Everyone I work with owns guns. They think I'm the weird one because I don't like freely available guns everywhere.
Load More Replies...Same here - but not because of the American people, I have friends from over there, they're really nice. I'm actually way more afraid of your police officers and the weird customs around them. I'd be so afraid one of those legal criminals could shoot my boyfriend (who is not white) because he did something that triggered a cop.
To be completely honest, that is a far more valid concern than being afraid to visit due to the potential for gun violence. Gun violence against strangers is very rare, but racism...it's a c**p shoot. A majority of people are really nice, but we have some bad eggs too. Some officers are really nice and good people, but some aren't.

Not as a visitor/tourist. My ex wife who is German, visited me couple of times and the last time she had a medical emergency, not involving ambulance ride but I took her to the doctor. She had to pay something like $500 and her insurance covered it all
Load More Replies...As an American, I completely understand this sentiment, but statistically it's unlikely to happen. We are a huge country and there are many places that are really safe and welcoming and there are plenty of areas that are not. Do research, ask around and I know that there's somewhere that will welcome foreigners from your area with open arms.
You're missing out. Been to the US several times. Some City Trips. But also several coast to coast Road Trips with my wife. Met wonderful people along the way. Also amazing landscapes. Yes, there were some strange folks. But that you could find anywhere. Miami Beach and SF did have a bit more homeless folks than average. But that was more of a sad affair than a dangerous one. And maybe next time I wouldn't stay in the cheapest Motel 6 in rural Michigan again. Besides that we always felt safe. Not just that. We loved it. Several weeks on the road. Hotels and Motels, Big cities and small towns. Urban areas and countryside. We had a blast. That's why we came back so often. (I still try to contact Joe the truck driver again from around Fresno/Bakersfield, a great chap... sadly lost his e-mail shortly after our Route 66 trip in 2007)
And along the way you get to eat at some great diners! Check out Diners, drive in’s and dives ! There are some episodes on YouTube!

The last few times I went to the US from Canada DHS and ICE were incredibly threatening and invasive, and I didn't even have any luggage. The psychopaths in their border guard organizations are there to dissuade anyone who isn't a white cis gendered Christian from entering the country, and most Americans have no idea they're doing it. Walking the streets in an American city you might worry about random violence like shootings and muggings, but the real dread comes from the guaranteed threats, intimidation, legal theft, groping, and powerlessness you will experience at their land borders. I have no plans to ever return. Seriously, you're all guarded by batshit crazy Trumpists.
Yes. Groping at airports a big concern for women.

Worked in Riyadh for two years - only the silly high salary kept me there that long (saved enough to build a house). Absolute s**t hole.
Last year December I was contacted by a broker who convinced me to invest into Cryptoallday. I made an initial investment of € 190,00 and they asked for € 14,500 more in order to access my withdrawal. I followed their instructions and made another deposit. For 2 months now I have been trying to contact Crypto-all-day but I got no response. I talked to my friends and colleagues about it and luckily for me a friend of mine just got out of a situation like that and introduced to a wealth recovery team that helped her during her investment problem, within 3 days of contacting them they were able to help me get 100% of my lost money back. They only got paid after the recovery and I had no problem with giving them 10% from the recovered funds after I got it back. A greedy person I knew worked there for some years to build up a lot of tax free money. When he decided to leave, they would not allow him to take it out of the country. He has been bitter and twisted ever since.
China, wouldn't want to give their horrible government any money through tourism. Not that my meager fees would matter anyway.
The country and people are beautiful. So much history there that’s ancient and lovely. Now the Chinese government on the other hand, that’s frightening.
In America almost everything I buy seems to be made in China right now. Consequently, my spending has decreased dramatically.
I’ve visited China and many countries on this list. Don’t cross off a country just because of their government. It was one of the best places I’ve ever visited. The people and food was amazing and completely different perspective to our world. This list and the comments are disappointing and quite frankly ignorant.
China is a wonderful trip. I was there for work, mostly in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Both cities are a lot of fun, with great food, and very helpful and patient people. I loved my time there. My mom went on vacation last year and also loved it there. I think it's easier to travel there than to Japan. More Chinese people will speak English, and they are friendlier than the Japanese. Both countries are worth visiting though, love them both.
I loved them, ppl were friendly, amazing landscape, easy to travel independently. I would highly recommend it. Travel is also about learning other cultures, broaden your horizon. You don't always have to agree. I would stay away or be very aware for countries where Sharia is heavily enforced. No travel is worth dying.
Lived there for eight years, a fascinating country, lovely people. In terms of government - the USA and the UK are both heading on the same direction.
I visited in 2006 and loved it. But knowing what I know now, I wouldn't visit again.
Their "horrible government" is responsible for the greatest effort in poverty alleviation in the history of mankind. This post is utter c**p. So much bigotry and hypocrisy here.
However, different countries are more dangerous for different people. For instance, South Africa is considered to be the most dangerous country in the entire world for solo female travelers. Barely 25% of women in the country reported feeling safe walking alone at night.
In second place is Brazil while Russia is in third place. Mexico is the fourth most dangerous place for female travelers while the Dominican Republic is in fifth, according to the World Population Review.
Meanwhile, the top 10 safest countries for women are Spain, Singapore, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Portugal, Croatia, Canada, and Poland.
Somalia

Just read the is government travel advisory:
If you decide to travel to Somalia:
Review your personal security plan and visit our page on Travel to High-Risk Areas. Avoid sailing near the coast of Somalia and review the Live Piracy Report published by the International Maritime Bureau. Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or power of attorney. Discuss a plan with loved ones regarding care/custody of children, pets, property, belongings, non-liquid assets (collections, artwork, etc.), funeral wishes, etc. Share important documents, login information, and points of contact with loved ones so that they can manage your affairs if you are unable to return as planned to the United States. Find a suggested list of such documents here. Establish your own personal security plan in coordination with your employer or host organization (if you are traveling on business) or consider consulting with a professional security organization. Develop a communication plan with family and/or your employer or host organization (if you are traveling on business), so that they can monitor your safety and location as you travel through high-risk areas. This plan should specify whom you would contact first, and how that person should share the information. Identify key sources of possible assistance for you and your family in case of emergency, such as the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, FBI, the State Department, your employer (if traveling on business), and local friends/family in the high-risk area. Be sure to appoint one family member to serve as the point of contact with hostage-takers, media, U.S. and host country government agencies, and members of Congress if you are taken hostage or detained. Establish a proof of life protocol with your loved ones, so that if you are taken hostage, your loved ones can know specific questions (and answers) to ask the hostage-takers to be sure that you are alive (and to rule out a hoax). Leave DNA samples with your medical provider in case it is necessary for your family to access them. Erase any sensitive photos, comments, or other materials from your social media pages, cameras, laptops, and other electronic devices that could be considered controversial or provocative by local groups. Leave your expensive/sentimental belongings behind.
When i was working in Kenya, there were many somalis there. That country has been in bad shape for decades. It's really sad, everyone I've ever met from Somalia has been absolutely wonderful.
Load More Replies...Tldr: you're going to die or get kidnapped. Make sure you have a will and plan your funeral before traveling. Give your doctor a DNA sample so we can identify your remains.
The Somali diaspora is sad, but if you're interested in experiencing Somali culture, there are many Somali communities in the USA, in Ohio, Texas and Maine, that are thriving despite immigration.
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota has a huge Somali population - more than 50,000 people.

It's a hot spot for piracy, hence the warning not to go sailing there. The EU has navy vessels down there since 2008 to protect ships from them (Operation Atalanta)

Haiti appears to be a terrifying, chaotic, nearly unsalvageable, place right now.
Which is a shame, since they were doing fine not even that long ago.

Did volunteer work there about 20 years ago and I was terrified to go, but loved the experience in spite of the poverty and heartbreak While volunteering at an orphanage, I found out firsthand what privilege I was born into with having parents that loved me and were there to hold me and give me love and attention when I needed it. Changed my outlook on life immensely.
I'll never understand Haïti. So many possibilities for a great economy, yet so much corruption one wonders why the UN hasn't acted like a service social protection agency and taken control for the sake of the population.
I read an article that argued Haiti would have a similar economy to its neighbor, the Dominican Republic, if it didn't have to spend 100 years paying France for its independence. https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2021/10/05/1042518732/-the-greatest-heist-in-history-how-haiti-was-forced-to-pay-reparations-for-freed

That island where the locals kill you as soon as they see you.
North Sentinal island.
They just want to be left alone, that's their right. You'd think the Christian colonialists to have learned to stay away by now.
I'm okay with the occasional missionary doing some North Sentinal FAFO.
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure they're protected and you're actually not allowed to go there. Don't blame them, they live in balance with their world. Wonder how long until what we've done to our planet destroys them too.
You're not allowed to visit there anyway but the complete agreement of the rest of the world. There was a meeting about it
I believe the North Sentinels used to be more social with neighbouring islands, and would communicate with each other. They must have gotten wind about what was happening with settlers claiming lands. The North Sentinels may have even had a battle with some explorers and won, refusing to let go. Rightfully so. Any calm, seemingly friendly attitudes to foreigners may not be genuine friendliness. Best to not try to think you're special and steer clear.
One doesn't get to decide not to visit the North Sentinel Island. It's illegal to visit this place
Afghanistan. Been there done that.
The US should have armed every female there before it left them defenseless
Yeah, because history shows that every time the US has proactively supported a suppressed group the end result has been a stable and peaceful nation. Remember when the mujahideen were the good guys? Remember Saddam?

If you think about it, really hard, you’ll realize countries that hold women back do not think they’re useless but rather know just how smart & powerful women can be and are terrified of them. I usually pepper these comments with little funny quips, but there is nothing funny about the way women are treated in these countries. Any man who subscribes to this ideology needs to be properly educated and if that doesn’t work, removed from the equation permanently. I am a firm believer that women need to rule this planet. Men don’t know what they’re doing; that’s obvious. Maybe women don’t either but let’s give them a few millennia before we judge.
Got the t-shirt even the infamous poo pond one from KAF. Very very sad but those of who worked there knew the talli-tubbies would do this. Five wonderful years in Af - truly an incredible country and Afghans are some of the kindest most generous and loyal people I have ever met

Really surprised that Papua New Guinea hasn’t made the list. It’s not Somalia but it’s not far off either.
A friend worked there briefly and spent the whole time in a heavily guarded gated complex (home), heavily guarded gated compound (work), or being escorted by armed guard in an armoured vehicle. He had to go through a number of debriefing sessions to adjust to the freedoms of normal life when he got back.
That’s a big no thanks from me
Beautiful country, however plagued first by Dutch colonization and now by its own government by supressing the natives & repopulating large amounts of Indonesians to that area.
My mate grew up in Port Moresby he said it was both amazing and terrifying.
Lived in PNG over 30 years ago and went back to visit 9 years ago. The politicians are not looking out at all for the best interests of the nationals. So many good jobs are given to foreigners so the money leaves the country. The businesses cover the high rent of their workers to write off leaving the housing market unattainable for many. People build shacks in the city and pay weekly rent on the land. Nevermind the whole LNG projects that are destroying the land. Also political issues with China paying for infrastructure vs Australia to gain control of the South Pacific. But the land is beautiful and other than the rascals (local word for criminals) the people are lovely.
An old friend of mine was kidnapped there in the 1990s.... Not nice....
In today's world? A whole bunch. Even if I wore the local garb and had male escorts I would not feel safe and I would not enjoy my time surrounded by animals who only see me as a sex toy. As much as I would LOVE to see what these areas hold, war torn countries, violent countries, places with large cartel presence, countries with a lot of corruption, countries who aren't exactly friends with my country.... I love traveling and I love exploring but I also love being whole and alive.
I am amazed India isnt on the list. I travelled there and would never go back. The treatment of the lower classes was disgusting. I saw a man litterally peeing on a street cleaner scrubbing the sidewalk. And rapes, burning of women... Of one few countries I was afraid to walk alone in.
India has 1.4 billion people, so even a small crime rate can mean a lot of bad people. However, do also remember that it's a very big country and the population is well distributed. If someone is staying in cheap places, walking through shady areas without a local guide, eating food from unhygienic street vendors and haggling in street markets over a few cents, then they can't really blame the country for their unpleasant experience. I have seen people do these things way too many times. India has problems, but not as much as some people make it seem. And about the peeing thing, I believe idiots like these exist even in the best countries

It drives me crazy that my country sends more than $3.8 Billion in taxpayer's dollars to a country that is so criminal.
I still wouldn't compare these Jewish people to Nazis in particular. They also don't gas anyone, which was the main horror of the Nazis. Taking down your enemies houses and replace them with their own is something people did and still do all around the world. It's of course still s****y behavior, but has nothing to do with Nazism
Load More Replies...Absolutely beautiful country that I've explored extensively. Would love to retire there.
Palestine had a chance to have a separate state but Arafat turned it down decades ago
I'd say it's very complicated, as both sides have their fair share of heating up the conflict. I wouldn't give Palestine underdog sympathy though, usually they are the ones attacking Israel with rockets fired from civilian areas to force the ISDF to strike back.
You have to understand that the West Bank and Gaza are two different places. Gaza launches rockets, but the West Bank is still subjected to unfair Israeli control. Israel’s security wall cuts into the West Bank, and checkpoints inside the West Bank are extremely restrictive of Palestinians’ movement within the West Bank.
Load More Replies...I certainly don't hate Jews, but it has started being reported as antisemitic if you hate Israel - the government - not everyone.
Most of the time, anti Zionists don’t have fair criticism of Israel, they just hate Jews and don’t want us to have our own state because they have fallen for pan-Arabist lies.
Load More Replies...My dad used to have to visit Israel occasionally for his work. The first time he visited he was interrogated for 6 hours because his passport had stamps from Arab countries in it. After that he had a separate passport that was only used for the Arab states. My family was terrified because we knew his plane had landed and normally the first thing he would do would be to find a payphone (before mobile days) and let us know he had arrived safely. Eventually he was believed that he was simply there for work and that the company in Israel had invited him.
I was shocked the first time I went to Israel because every sign was in Hebrew, Arabic and some English. I saw Israeli Arab Muslims getting along great with Jewish Israelis. I was invited by a Muslim lady to go smoke hashish at her place. I went. There is no apartheid in Israel. All they're doing is protecting the citizens.. which include Arabs, from dying by a terrorist attack.
See, that's the thing. Historically, Muslims, Christians, and Jews all lived side by side together in complete harmony, and not only can we still do that today, we ARE doing that. But there are Palestinians who have no homes because of the illegal occupation.

I follow a lot of travel groups, and whenever someone asks for the worst travel experience, an overwhelming amount of people always say Egypt.
One deleted user said:
One youtuber said they seemed so paranoid and disorganized in Egypt. They confiscated his drone, but he had to instruct them to make some sort of receipt system so he'd have a way to get it back. They were just putting it in a plastic bag, with no sticker or marking, or anything. Nobody knew the rules, if there were any. He had been to a lot of African and other countries, and never had such a disorganized and hostile time entering a country.
Guys I'm Egyptian , we are not even allowed 2 have a drone , we must have an approve from government and they will say no anyways lol , but Egypt is an experience every body must have , I'm not saying that because it's my country, I'm saying that because it's amazing ,and we are super friendly ppl , give it a shot and i promise you won't regret it .
i had a wonderful time! not really ok with how working animals were treated, but other than that, it was really nice. i made a friend in Alexandria, and had my breath taken away by the incredible food and antiquities along the nile basin.

A great experience but tiring due to being continually shouted at and harassed by locals e.g. taxi! taxi! taxi! taxi! taxi! taxi! taxi! My mom went to egypt and she also said she would never go back. She Saw a lot of disturbing things, and Said she felt especially scared with the guys around the pyramids. They were being Way too pushy to the point of harresment. For Me the deciding factor is the terrible Way they treat camels, those poor beautiful babies deserves Way better :(
Any nation with adversarial relations with the USA. I don't want to be held as a political prisoner bargaining chip because they caught me with a damn vape pen.

I follow some travel subs and India and Egypt often come up as not worth it at all.
India was intense. Drove us mental after only two weeks. The constant begging, harassment, chaos, hussles. But also intensely beautiful, special, colorful, architecture, food. We fled into smaller villages, to wind down. Best decision. I would still recommend India. Just maybe not for your first abroad trip. :)
Goa is awesome, I've been there 5 times. Felt like coming home even on the first visit.
Load More Replies...I disagree - spent many months in both countries - and you just can't dismiss them with a trite "not worth it". India can be overwhelming but it such as beautiful country in so many ways - I have very fond memories of both places.
This is so going to depend on your gender and sexuality.
Load More Replies...So this is actually based on someone READING it's not worth it? Not first hand experience. Great story, not.
There are some amazing places in India. Although there are awesome historical sites in cities, eg Humayan's Tomb and Jama Masjid in Delhi, mostly the cities are s**t holes. And it's really sad and depressing to see the extreme poverty and pollution.
India is a wonderful place, I’d go there again in a heartbeat. The thing westerners need to remember - it’s not the West, they do things differently there.
It depends what you expect and what you're going for though. I personally wouldn't go to India because ai know I'd get too overwhelmed, but more extroverted friend absolutely love it.
Both are beyond beautiful as long as you don't expect the people to treat you like you're an American or western. And, even that, you are most likely treated like royalty anyway. Just have common sense.

Indonesia [now that sex out of marriage](https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/12/08/indonesia-new-criminal-code-disastrous-rights) is gonna probably be illegal. Not the place to go for women and LGBTQ people.
Only a close relative (parent, spouses, children) can report under the law so you're only at risk if you go on holiday with your partner AND your family.
What about the family of the person you have sex with? If you take your own partner okay. If you hook up with a local you could end up in jail or in a blackmail scam.

One of the most amazing places to visit. I have been there numerous times from 1995 and the last trip was about 2 years ago. Fantastic experience. I am from the States. I haven't been able to keep food down for two weeks but I am terrified to go to the doctor because 1) I just found out yesterday that the four days that I legitimately missed, with doctor notes, are still considered "occurrences" and one more and I am fired. I have worked there 22 years and have an exemplary work record, but because of my health, I am one day away from being fired. I live in a right to work state so I have no job security. They can just decide to fire me and I am gone. 2) any medical problem that I have had has ended up in thousands of dollars of medical bills that have taken me years to pay off. What if something serious is wrong with me and I get fired and lose my insurance. I will lose everything. And freedom of speech in the US? If my multi billion dollar company finds out who I am, they would fire me just for writing this. Yay USA.
All countries in the tropics, they are too hot for my Scandinavian genes
Many countries in the tropics have a wide variety of climatic conditions. I happen to be Colombian, a country that is often thought as exclusively tropical and hot, but the capital, and many other places in the andean plateau, have a relatively cold/chilly weather all year long, in spite of the fact that we don't have distinctive seasons or temperature changes. Bogotá, for instance, is 2600 meters above sea level, enough to make it relatuvely cold during the whole year, with top temperatures of 24° Celsius, and dropping to 0° in the outskirts, this also means that bugs are something you won't have to worry about in these areas. We even have many snow capped mountains, one of them being the highest sea side mountainous formation in the world (Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta). Same happens with Ecuador and Venezuela. Bottom line, just because a country is in the tropics does not mean that everything there is a tropical setting.
As a scandinavian who is cold 99% more than everyone else i really love warm countries. while everyone was sweating their clothes off last summer due to the heat wave across Europe, i couldnt have been better. It was actually still a little cold somedays, my family thinks im crazy. It was 33-35 degrees c.
A lot of Scandinavians spend months in Thailand in winter, on the beach, etc.

Load More Replies...The poverty and violence in the Congo definitely puts me off visiting. I had a friend from there when I was younger. She lived in a 1 room mud hut with her mum and 2 brothers, 4 of her brothers were murdered and her dad disappeared when she was 10, they never knew what happened to him. None of them had steady work and would do anything for money. I met her when she moved to scotland after getting engaged to the janitor from my college. He was 58 and had been married for 36 years with 4 kids, him and his wife started going to the Congo every summer after falling in love with the place, they did this for 5 years. During this time he started an affair with my friend and later left his wife to be with her. She eventually moved to scotland and married him, she was 19, he was 58. (I later learned they'd started sleeping together when she was 14!) She divorced him after 5 years.

Here in Germany there are a lot of commercials for Dubai tourism on TV. The main theme is always, "If you're straight & love to spend money, Dubai is for you." Needless to say I won't be visiting soon.
If you don't want your travel plans to fund organised crime then stay home. First, imagine if the Mafia ran the world, second - stop imagining. They don't really run the world because they are amateurs and governments do this professionally. Turf wars, drugs etc. Look at Afghanistan where Hilary Clinton (see Wikileaks) told her command there to allow the farmers to restart opium farming in order to get them onside. The recent withdrawal from Afghanistan means that there is now a shortage of heroin worldwide. Look at the oil being stolen from Syria by the US. Look how countries are destabilised to prevent them selling oil etc on the world market - raising the price for those who have it. No, the mafia are rank amateurs at this..
Eritrea
Where to start? Abject poverty, Border wars with Ethiopia, Eritrea's had only president since independence; his rule, particularly since 2001, has been highly autocratic and repressive. His government has created a highly militarized society by pursuing an unpopular program of mandatory conscription into national service – divided between military and civilian service – of indefinite length.
My brother went there several times for several months to help them find potable water, he was a hydrogeologist. He said that while it was terrible regarding human rights it was also utterly and entirely safe. He was always alone, as in no bodyguard etc. The scariest areas, such as the border with Ethiopia, he did have a military escort. But elsewhere he simply went about doing his job finding them water. He said he believes the safety was likely from a combination of the population having been suppressed for so long, and it being a very religious Christian country. They had a ton of churches, the ratio of churches to bars was higher than you see in most other places and he thought that maybe they used religion to help keep the people quiet. He wasn't sure about any of this but he was there enough that I think he's likely correct. He also said from all the other countries he'd worked with, they were the most "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" country he'd ever seen. He was seriously impressed by that aspect of the population and the government. Personal responsibility seemed to be deeply ingrained in every aspect of the culture; the only reason you didn't have what the neighbors had was because of your own actions, not because you are a victim. That may have been because they're under so many sanctions for human rights abuses the government didn't really have a choice in the matter and that trickled down. He said they were the only African country he'd worked in that didn't try to grossly change the terms of the contracts AFTER the work was completed. All the others would just refuse to pay in one way or another and of course their courts would support that. This was to the point that they stopped working in any African country except Eritrea. This boggles me, but, again, it may be due to the fact that they were under so many sanctions that they couldn't afford to p**s off outside expertise they desperately needed. So Eritrea was a reliable country to work in. They also had the most controlled media in the world at the time, they still do. So he said that was weird. I'm not sure how they were regarding women, I wished I'd asked him that as well. He had both American and Canadian passports and he was working for a Canadian company which was interesting. I should have thought to ask him which PP he traveled there under. They also didn't appear to have any grudges against Americans in general as so many other countries do. So yes, the most beautiful and the most horrible.
YES. I am Ethiopian - Eritrean - American sooo my family is kind of weird. My dad is Eritrean and my mom Ethiopian. They migrated bc my dad was drafted for their war but is a pacifist. Anyway im first gen and have never been. 🫤
