According to a common definition, chivalry is “the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, especially courage, honor, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak.”
The word is usually associated with the medieval institution of knighthood when knights’ and gentlewomen’s behaviors were governed by chivalrous social codes.” Today, however, we understand chivalry as a courtesy and gentleness to women.
Little acts do wonders: from waiting for a woman to sit before a man does, to help her with a coat to let her go through a door first. Having said that it’s subject to debate whether chivalry is still relevant today in a world where we put gender equality before other things.

I think the main thing to mention is not just that he's nice to this lady, but that he's kind. I read that recently here on bored panda (some article about dating kind guys instead of 'nice' guys. That there's a difference between nice and kind with 'nice' having a transactional connotation where as kindness is given without the expectation of repayment.

A cockle is a chamber of a kiln, particularly a kiln used for drying barley or oats. Since the heart is composed of chambers, and kilns get warm, it could be in reference to this. But this could also refer to the cochleae cordis, which is a medieval Latin term for the heart's ventricles. So it's possible the word "cockle" here could be a corruption of "cochlea".

Yesterday a man said: if I go with the train, I see these whole families with kids sitting. Why don't these kids stand up for me? Ehm because it's way easier for an adult to stand and not fall. 2 guys stood up for my kids when the train was full. So sweet. I give my seat to a kid too. One boy acted so surprised.

Somehow I find it kind of sad that such a young child acts so maturely and takes on the responsibility for the well-being of his mother to such an extent. That doesn't feel quite right to me, because it's supposed to be the other way around.

My guess is that she's equally considerate of him. Whenever I get sick or even just have a headache, my kids are so sweet to me. They tuck me in and sing me songs and give me kisses on my forehead, just like I do for them.

Chivalry refers to the medieval knights' code of honor that references a range of male behaviors. According to Texas A&M literary historian Jennifer Wollock, in the middle ages, European literature featured knights and kings as protectors of women.
For example, In Geoffrey of Monmouth’s “History of the Kings of Britain” of 1138, King Arthur kills the rapist giant of Mont-Saint-Michel. A few decades later, the French poet Chrétien de Troyes portrays Sir Lancelot casting aside reputation, glory and treasured warhorses to save the kidnapped Queen Guinevere. Wollock argues that “such popular tales of chivalry pressured aristocrats to adopt the chivalric code – to some extent.”

On My Flight Back To Georgia I Saw A Man Who Offered To Help This Woman Because She Was Pregnant And Alone On The Flight And Her Son Was Upset And Fussy
He did not complain, he just told her that he was a DAD, and wanted to help her so she could rest. This MAN walked the aisle for most of the flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta comforting this woman's son as if he was his own... I was in tears... Not because he was white and she was black... But because it showed me today that there are still GOOD people out there in a world full of turmoil. Big UPS to this DAD and all the DADS out there... You are the real MVPS!

In the 14th and 15th centuries, English writers like Geoffrey Chaucer and Sir Thomas Malory depicted the court of King Arthur as a bastion of justice for women, well beyond the norms of that day, Wollock argues. As knights intervened to protect civilians, western chivalry became a force of its own kind.
In today’s world, however, our society is very much in dispute over the value of chivalry. It’s because chivalry demands that maltreatment of women be crushed, whereas feminism calls for equal rights between women and men, by which logic, both feminism and chivalry mean the same thing: respect.
However, some people are not truly comfortable with chivalrous gestures as they believe that it’s not the same as respect. Skeptics see chivalry at odds with feminism, and argue it’s no longer relevant.

I will do this, if someone is nice and friendly. Even front row, I let smaller ones 'in'. (I brace myself against the barriers, so a smaller person can fit there, if they want to.) But if you give me a hard time for being tall and yourself being too late, then no. Of you go.

I remember when I met a real-life dwarf at concert (he was about 120 centimeters tall, heavily built and he had amazing beard, all he needed was a chainmail and an axe) and with his friend we just winked at each other, grabbed him and lifted him so he could see the show. It was an amazing moment for all three of us.

In law school one of my classmates ended up in a situation where he needed to bring his 8 year old son with him to class for several weeks. On the first day my classmate brought his son to class he was in a little three piece suit and tie. The professor had talked to the kid before class and fed him the answers to the first few questions so he could show off in class. It was so cute and really made my classmate and his son feel welcome.

I do too. I’ve never met my father and my single mother growing up was always working overtime or exhausted trying to care for my sister and I, she was rarely able to come to those events and it caused a lot of stress and pain for some of my peers too.

I took my son to donuts with dad (I’m his mom) when he was in preschool. His dad is here, he was just traveling for work that week. Daycare staff was happy to have me. None of the dad’s said anything. My son loved his donut. Don’t let the gender of these events stop you from being there for your kid regardless of your child’s parent situation. People know families come in all shapes and sizes, two moms, one aunt, grandpa, etc. as the parent. We all love our kids.

In modern Western cultures, chivalry can be seen in men offering a range of special courtesies to women. This includes paying on dates, carrying heavy objects, pulling out chairs, opening doors, and allowing women to go first, even when the man was there first.
Beatrice Alba, a lecturer at Deakin University, argues that despite being generally seen as polite and even romantic, these acts of chivalry – where men are excessively courteous to women simply because they are women – have a dark side.
“Psychologists refer to the paternalistic attitudes underlying these behaviors as benevolent sexism. Benevolent sexism involves the belief that men should cherish and protect women, and ‘put them on a pedestal.’ This is because women are viewed as being more morally pure, weaker, and in need of protection,” Alba explained.

I want to fix her walker! Her brakes are locked in position, so they should be holding it in place. I repaired these things 20 years ago, and I always keep an eye out for walkers with issues since. You can often fix brake problems on them with your bare hands.

Was at Disney a week ago, a big security guard with a thick New York accent yelled at my husband " HEY BOSS" I'm gonna need you to hand over your service dog before going into the park! My husband completely flustered starts to explain he's a seizure alert dog the security guard says I need him because he's so freakn' adorable with a giant smile on his face. Awwwwww. At the daycare I had four year olds. A little girl asked the boy next to her what he was going to be for Halloween. He said a power ranger. She said she was going to be a princess, and they both went back to their toys. A minute or two later, the little girl said, "I'm going to be prettier than you." This happened to us as well. Took my granddaughter to Disney World for the princess makeover. As we were walking around about two hours later one of the grounds crew said "excuse me princess, may I have your autograph"? She was so excited, said yes, and asked me what an autograph is. She signed her name in his book and was bouncy with excitement for the rest of the day. :)

I used to work at a kids store in a mall that was right about the Disney store. Families that didn't know the mall that well would often get confused and accidentally show up at my store and ask directions. A lot of times the Disney store at my mall did events so kids would show up dressed up. I used to always make sure to ooh and ahh at their costumes and call them by the characters names and try to give them directions in theme (like if it was someone dressed up as Cinderella id say take your pumpkin down the left to the elevators and hurry before it strikes midnight!) My manager loved it and i got promoted to shift lead in no time because parents got a kick out of it and they would come back after the Disney store and spend a s**t ton of money at my store too. Anyway. I guess what I'm trying to say... Kids are kids once let them enjoy 100% of it.
Both benevolent and hostile sexism are intertwined with systematic sexism, which, when put in this context, makes chivalry extremely problematic. Bored Panda reached out to Nicole Froio, a feminist writer who researches masculinity, sexual violence and the media.
Froio explained that systematic sexism is a term that refers to a “system of discrimination that targets women specifically for being women. So, for example, if a woman isn't promoted because her boss is afraid she will get pregnant and take time off, that's sexism.”

TBH, it would a) give me a heart attack. Once you've been in prison, any cop anywhere is cause for concern. b) annoy the hell out of me. I'm a recluse for a reason. c) freak me out because I now have a dead piece of plant I don't want, and don't really know what to do with.
And while there's been a lot of work done towards building a world with better equality in terms of gender and minorities, Froio argues that there will be a long way to go as long as we keep doing things the same exact way.
“If we all committed to a better, more equitable world, this wouldn't be an issue, but it's difficult to do that. So yes, there's a long, long way to go,” she added.
When thinking of a more equitable world where equal rights are among the most valuable aspects of a strong and well-developed society, it’s interesting to think how chivalrous acts may (or may not) intervene with it. The answers may not be straightforward ones, and yet it’s the act of discussing these issues that matters.

OMG, my husband did the same thing with our first. Back when new moms & their babies were supposed to stay hospitalized for three days before being released. He went out drinking with his buddies only to get a call from the hospital in the morning, kicking us out because I wouldn't eat the nasty food, and our daughter wouldn't stop crying, disturbing all the other babies in the nursery. He called his mom crying, asking what to do. She said, "Go get your family." He showed up in a 3-piece suit to impress his daughter. I didn't tell him her eyes couldn't focus well enough for it to matter. He kept that up, always giving 110% for his family until the day he died.

When I worked day care, I got a flat. Pulled into a grocery parking lot to change it. When I was nearly finished one of the boys in my class came running up. He and his dad saw me, and the dad offered to help. He was in nice clothes, and I was already dirty, so I declined. He wondered aloud if his wife would be able to change a tire if she needed to. I believe the wife was offered tire changing lessons.

At first, I thought she meant that her boyfriend was with her on the phone trying to call for help, and I thought, why not give her that task and he fix the tire? Then I thought, why would you be calling out for help with a flat tire, maybe people these days are really clueless. Then I realized she was on the phone with him and him explaining to her how to change a tire, then it made sense. I'm the slow one today.

Y'all I have to brag about my husband big time tonight! He made me soo proud. As we were sitting in our seats waiting for the rodeo to start I noticed an elderly lady (pictured below) her grown daughter and 2 young granddaughters trying to come down the stairs. The elderly lady was having a rough time. I pointed them out to my husband and said they may need help. Not only did he help get her to her seat, but she did not have the strength to come back up the stairs. So, he carried her!

OH! One of the BEST APPS EVER is called "Be My Eyes" that visually impaired people can use for help identifying things! When they need help, a video call is sent out to all of the "volunteers" who have signed up through the app. So far, I've helped one woman sort her mail and two other women identify different groceries in their pantries. Oh, and another woman called to make sure that her outfit matched! I love doing it and always feel bad when I'm not able to pick up a call from the app, although I know that it just gets picked up by someone else who is signed up.

There was a social experiment done several years ago, where a wallet filled with money and I think a fake ID with a phone number on it, was “lost”. The researchers wanted to see how many times people would contact the “owner” and return to wallet with all the money in it. Turns out the majority of people are 100% honest, and most of them wouldn’t accept any reward. Not sure how many times this experiment has been replicated, but it comforts me to know that the majority of humans are actually good, kind, honest people who can be counted on to do the right thing. Unfortunately, we rarely hear about them because the bad guys are deemed more newsworthy. We need to reverse that trend, as it makes it seem as if we’re all rotten to the core when the truth is the majority of us aren’t.

Oh god this takes me back. I once lost my purse at a highway rest stop while on vacation. Since I was already back on the road when I realized it was missing I gave up all hope of ever seeing it again. When I came home from the vacation I found a package at my doorstep with my purse in it. There was no sender or anything, only a note attached that read: "While searching for mine, I found yours." To this day I wonder about that poor person searching for their purse. Thank you so much and I hope you found it!

I had this happen once when my tire blew out on the interstate and had to pull off the first exit available. The gentleman that saw my situation walked up to my car and said to pop the trunk and stay inside while he changed it so I would feel safer. When he left he said "there's my good deed for the day!"

In our local supermarket cafe they are doing oap specials to help with the soaring cost of everything, its only a bowl of soup with a cob for £1. The other day when me and the other half were grabbing lunch a younger lady came in, asked the older gent sitting on his own if he minded her sitting on his table the cafe was full. It was lovely to watch two strangers chatting just like in this picture, and I'm sure that act kept that fella going through the rest of the day.

I lived in Houston and moved to a new neighborhood. Once a week we would see and older man out doing yard work, usually on a Saturday. One day we stopped to say hello, began chatting and learned that he was 74 years old. My daughter, who was 5 at the time, asked why we never saw him on any other days. His response: "I don't live here. I just come to help my mother." We met his mother, who was 98, and she sat with us on the porch and told tales of coming to Texas in a covered wagon and her first experiences with newfangled gadgets like cars and airplanes. It was fascinating.

I once went to a restaurant on my birthday, ate and ordered a slice of cheese cake. I had brought two candles with me, a "3" and "4". I put it on and lit them and closed my eyes to make a wish. I quietly sung myself a happy bday to me song with my eyes shut and tearing up alone. When I opened them the entire staff was around my table and cheered. I cried happy tears then. One of the bar tenders saw me alone and rushed everyone there in like 1.5 min.

Someone did this for me once! I was flying alone for the first time at 17 (not a long flight, 4 hours Sweden to Germany) and I'm really not scared of flights, but this particular day had been far too stressful! Waking up at 4 am, traveling for hours to reach the airport, check-in, waiting, anxiety about finding the gate etc, since I had never done any of this myself. When I finally entered the plane I was a mess from exhaustion and worry so when I tried to find my seat and couldn't everyone got annoyed because I was causing a pileup. I got pushed to the back of the plane by the crowds and felt like such a liability, it was horrible! A flight attendant asked if I was okay and all I managed was "Yes thank you, could you help me f-f-f-find..." before bursting into tears and almost fainting. She let me sit at the front to be close to the attendants and a kind gentleman (turns out he was actually from my city!) offered to swap seats and sit next to me. 1/2

He held my hand and explained everything the plane was doing, why the wings tipped, what the beeps and boops mean and everything else. I think his brother was a flight attendant so he knew a lot about it. He sat next to me the whole flight and made sure I got off the plane and got my luggage before leaving. We used to have a neighbor up the street with a very large snowblower. Every major snowfall, he would take his snowblower and clear all the sidewalks up and down the entire street. Bless his heart. He eventually retired and moved to Florida. Can't say as I blame him.

My mom lives in a small village in bavaria (about 350 inhabitants) and there‘s no service where the streets get cleared from snow like in the bigger towns. But a neighbour who is a pensioner, gets up at 5 am every day in winter to remove the snow from every driveway in this village, so the people can get to work with car and the kids can go to the bus station safe.❤️

When police officers /military /fire service etc get injured on the job, do they get all treatment paid for or are they expected to pay for their treatment by themselves?

My Grandmother (now in her mid nineties) needed her smoke detector batteries changed. She rang the nearest firestation and explained she could not stand on a ladder or reach the smoke alarm to do it on her own (the chirping was driving her nuts and we were all at work). She offered tea and cake if they could come up when they had time. My boyfriend tried to do this once and it became a big argument because I didn’t want him walking barefoot either, it was cold and Vancouver and I was trying to be a gentleman too which was clashing with his gentlemanness. I ended up in his giant shoes carrying my own shoes, shuffling awkwardly 20 feet ahead and yelling angrily “I f*****g love you!” Then I made him stop at a donair shop on the way home and bought him the biggest most delicious donair ever. My sister and I were out clubbing one night and she literally couldn't walk home in heels as the not only was she drunk but the ground was starting to ice over. So I gave her my trainers to wear and I walked along the freezing road, eventually barefoot as my socks ripped (was a LONG way to walk.)

There's lots of comments here about the type or her shoes (heels). It shouldn't matter - it's about the goodness of the man here. I once walked a few km in my socks in Milan not because of heels, but because my shoes got too much wear and tear and decided to give up that day - they started to give me awful blisters and I just couldn't bare the pain. So I walked in white socks for a few km back to B&B. A nice man asked if I was ok or needed any help 🙂 I was having a time of my life 😀

So many missing the point of how heels became part of modern day views on femininity. The fashion industry (and the misogyny of same) lead women to think it's a beauty standard we must adhere to - makes our feet smaller, elongate our shape. Women have been hurting themselves for fashion / beauty standards for hundreds of years and it's not going to stop overnight. It's a mirror on society.

I used to be like that too. Two years of WFH and no social events and nobody is getting me into heels again if they paid me. When I put heels on first time post-lockdowns the pain was unbearable, no idea how I ever put up with it. Kicked them off and never gonna wear them again.

I'm mixed on this one. I mean mad creds to the guy and all. But WTF do girls wear those? My wife doesn't, and she isn't tell, but she points out that it isn't worth foot pain, stumbling, and possible long term foot damage just to look taller! Personally, if I were trying to look taller, I'd go for platforms! Anyway, I think high heels were terrible and people shouldn't wear them. If he's only interested in you because of your shoes, then he won't pass the test I mentioned above on the Alzheimer's post and you should keep looking!

This is absolutely adorable and sweet. That restaurant needs to get some blinds or curtains or something to block the sun. Creative but should not be necessary. Also, if they have already ordered and received their meals, why is there still a menu at the table? Doesn't the server usually take them away once everyone has ordered? That's always how it happens when I eat at restaurants.

I once did this too for a child I was a handicap helper for. She was terminal ill and lost her functions, including holding her head, throughout the time. I once hold her head for an hour on a car ride. I couldn't feel my hand but it didn't matter at all. She died at 12 years old on October 1th. I miss her so much.

I was on a flight with my husband and baby daughter from Germany to Japan and he get to fly Business class because it was for work. We just accompanied him because I speak some Japanese and love being in Japan. Baby daughter was v fussy, which was very unlike her (later realised she was getting a cold). Anyway, when she finally fell asleep in the most awkward position after trying everything to get her comfy, I realised I was stuck like that until she woke up 4 hours later… :-O The flight crew came round and gave us little ice creams as a treat and after tearing mine open with my teeth (one arm was occupied), it started melting down my arm. The super dishy and sweet man next to me had previously offered to help if I needed it and I did seriously consider indicating that he could lick the drips of ice cream running up my arm :D Instead he kindly got me a baby wipe.

This is a very sweet gesture, but why not just get/use a travel pillow on a flight? Also, her knees are going to be so sore when she wakes up! Unless she moves around in her sleep. My knees are sore just looking at this (they're actually sore because I sit like this for way too long and I have somewhat screwed up my knees from it, take my advice, don't sit in one position for too long! It's not good for your body!). Get this kid a neck pillow or something! Even if it is a lovely gesture, dad's arm will probably be numb after much less than 10 minutes. Let alone 45. .

Is This What Being In Love Is?
So I broke my hand in the most stupid way anyone could break their hand.
I was helping Cody, my boyfriend, move a bookshelf. We were too lazy to take everything off. I grabbed it wrong and it fell on my right hand. Since I am in the military, I have to keep my hair within standards. However trying to make a ponytail, then a bun with one hand is pretty much impossible. Cody, my boyfriend, was such a great sport helping me out. He did pretty freaking great for not having any experience!!
Cody has been nothing but amazing. He has helped me shower, dressed me, done most chores around the apartment, tucks me into bed, cuddles me on bad days while I cry my eyes out and now he does my hair (he even learned to braid it)
I thought I had been in love before but after seeing how he has lifted me up and helped me out, the other men I thought I loved are not half the man Cody is.
We have only been dating for 8 months and we haven't said I love you to each other but I think this is what love feels like. It's such a strange feeling and difficult to describe. Now I understand the definition of "when you know, you know".

Reversed genders but when my wife and I were first married I had a hand injury and she finished rebuilding the engine for our van. A couple of buddies came by and installed it for me and it ran great for many years afterward. A friend (like spouse or dating partner or buddies from work) is a wonderful thing.

I pulled over of course and jumped out of the van, at the same time as 4 other white vans pulled over. All us sweaty hairy dirty tradesmen, none of us knew each other, we all rushed over to help. I had just (as in, literally 3hrs earlier) passed my Flight Test, when I was the last person on board for the flight home (I barely made it as the weather was very bad when we were flying into Miami). I get to my seat, totally frazzled, next to a kid and his mom. The kid was really worried, because wind gusts kept hitting the plane (on the ground) and shook it a bit. (Big airliner) I knew it was going to be rough on the way out, as I'd just flown in. Now, the crew on board was the same I had on the way there, and the first question was "Did you pass?" "Yup!" (I'd been studying on the plane 6 weeks earlier lol) I hear the kid ask who will fly the plane if something happens to the pilot. Flight attendent goes "Don't worry. You're sitting next to a pilot." (Single Engine Land lol) "You are?" eyes big. I nod. "Really?" "Really." I pulled out my air charts and showed him where we were on the map, and got inundated by questions. He felt better. And I was less frazzled. :)

There was a time I was on a flight, my mom was staying In the place we flew out from later because my dad (who is a teacher) and I had to get home before school started again after spring break. At one point my dad got up to use the restroom and we hit a particularly bad spot if turbulence, it was awful for me, but the woman next to me, who hadn’t spoken to me the whole flight, comforted me and held my hand until my dad came back.

Depends on the officer, most in the beach Grove area, are nice enough that you can even call if you get locked out of your car. Just outside of beech Grove though, once I ran out of gas ( i had been struggling with money the week before and let it get way too low) i was on my way to the gas station. It was in sight but where i stopped the traffic was too busy for me to even get out of my car and walk . An officer pulled up asked what the problem was do I explained I was trying to get to the gas station there and was going to walk when the traffic slowed down. He told me that he was going to come back around in an hour and if I left my car he'd have it towed for being abandoned. Then drove off.

But i have great sympathy for new parents trying to have time together. i would help, no problem, without feeling like the meal was ruined. It was just 1 year ago that I learned that that was a Dutch braid rather than just a regular braid, which is funny because I'm Dutch. For anyone who wants to do this braid on themselves I highly recommend closing your eyes and seeing what you're doing in your mind rather than using a mirror :)

I was standing at a shelf and a very small woman asked me to get her something from the top shelf. Easy. I'm 6'6" (198cm). Then I asked her if a certain item on the bottom shelf was there, and she looked and found two for me. They were all the way at the back.

Yep fire stations, too. Those seats can be such a pain to try and install properly and you get nervous that you aren't doing it right. Just drive to a fire station or police station. They are trained to do it.

I remove the snow and or ice from my partners car, clear the windows and get it demisted and warmed up for when they head to work in the early hours. But I do think there are loads of us out there that do the same thing because we worry about them and also care. Those little gesture etc may not seem much but without them we are poorer as a society, the littlest of things can make the biggest of differences.

When Texas has the bad ice and snow I had tried to get to my mailbox (apts) which is literally on my wall outside but the farthest out from my door, but ended up slipping but not falling. I have hip dysplasia and a fall like that could end me up having to have surgery. I happened to be looking out my front door and my sweet neighbor Ruben was looking out too. I mentioned about the fact I was not getting out even for mail because of nearly falling. The next morning I hear a bunch of scraping. He had found a shovel and scraped all the ice and snow off our porch area and the sidewalk and to our cars. Couldn't ask for a better neighbor

These stories are absolutely lovely and heartwarming! However...with all the gross, horrid men in the world...I'd honestly be scared to accept these sort of acts of kindness. I know that it's weird to say (how can you be scared of niceness?) but...for ones especially like holding the baby or holding my hand, it is a bit risky. What if they're only being nice to get something? What if they attack me? I know it's not ALL men...but yeah. I'm very glad that these boys all grew up to be good men.
