Money might be the root of all evil, but we still need it. It helps us afford necessities and adds comfort to our lives. Conversely, the emptier our pockets and bank accounts get, the more challenging our days become. It can be hard to believe, but you're not a failure if they run dry; there are so many things out of our control. So to remind everyone that we're in this economy together, we at Bored Panda compiled a list of funny and accurate posts about (personal) finance, courtesy of this subreddit. Keep striving, stay resilient!

In Canada we pay for prescriptions, but my antidepressants are $18 a month. I meet with my doctor once a month. My employer pays for my twice-a-week counselling appointments through my employee benefit plan. My total bill for mental health care is $18 a month. I wish everyone could have it this easy :( we all deserve good health care.

Reading is honestly so beneficial :) those people that type things like “should of” instead of “should have” is often an indication that they haven’t read a lot of books. People who spell words correctly but pronounce them incorrectly is usually a sign that they learned that word from a book first :) scammers these days are actually relying on mildly illiterate people to not be able to notice small spelling errors in their emails or text messages that would give the scammer away….and those poor folks with a low literacy level tend to fall for scams at a much higher rate :( it’s really uncool

I started renting my apartment 5 years ago at just over $700/month. They can only raise my yearly rent at inflation rates as per my contract so I’m currently paying just over $800. The exact identical apartment across the hall from me just got rented out for $1490. Most of my neighbours are paying $1200 or more. For an identical apartment to mine. I’m so lucky but also very annoyed on their behalf. Eventually the strata will find a way to charge me $1200+ but for now I’m lucky as hell.

Remember the border bill the US GOP begged for…..then voted against it and shut it down because they were scared it might make their political opponent in the upcoming election look good? 🙄 sounds like a party that truly cares about the people and country and not their own personal career interests at all.

As long as they have the people locked into crippling debt, what else matters? The rich get richer and the poor get f**ked over every time. Think for a minute that maybe a bright, disadvantaged kid of had the inkling of the cure for cancer but couldn't get a scholarship because of their gender, disability, colour or religion? The crushing debt applied by institutions of higher learning and government is quite happy to forgo humanity saving intelligence, because there is no money in it for them.

Good point! NZ citizens probably weren’t as scared of their government offering social welfare as some other certain countries though, so it wasn’t a big scary deal to them to receive benefits. I bet it helped them out so much during covid.

Probably helps that national debt to GDP and population are both much lower in NZ too. The Government can just say you know what, we'll borrow 20 billion dollars if we have to and that'll cover our people for the immediate future. For the US to do the same they'd be looking at over a trillion dollars.

Real reason - New Zealand (like every other country except the U.S., Russia, China, and North Korea) doesn't have a crippling, wasteful, bloated military establishment. The military asks for insane amounts of money then gets even more - so no politician will appear "un-patriotic".

Because in MERICA it's who you are that matters and not what you do. Bill Gates pulling in $10M in passive income every year? Let me pay him to speak at our town hall for 10 minutes. Someone medically homeless getting $1200 a year in passive income for food? NIMBY!

The US state I live in gave $600 dollar a week bonuses to everyone on unemployment, and nothing to the people who actually went to work every day of the pandemic. After the pandemic the governor even voted down a single check for people who'd worked during the pandemic. If I'd left my job for "health related reasons" which I did qualify for, I would have made more on unemployment than I did at work. But I thought I was doing the right thing going to my "essential" retail job. If I could go back, I'd have spent the pandemic collecting unemployment and having a better life.

The wealthiest country in the world has just a few who hold the vast majority of that wealth. The rest of us are just trying to keep a roof over head, the lights on and some food on the table that isn't poison processed c**p. Getting ahead and saving for retirement is just a pipe dream for most of us.

ahh yes a country of 5 million people vs a country of 350 million people. NYC alone had 9 million. Your country has less people than my city. The US is a country 70x larger than NZ, and trying to make such comparisons doesnt make you look smart

Probably why I didn't hate Covid-19 for those first two years. Here in Australia my partner and I got $750 a week each to stay home and play games together. Rekindled our relationship after years of working long hours and barely seeing each other from over working.

I had a college math professor that would teach you how to do the math after the assignment. He would give the homework with no instruction. have us turn it in, then teach how to do it. Then, he would grade you to see if you had figured it out on your own and the grade would stand. I dropped that class after 2 weeks.

Taxes create the fiscal space for governments to spend without driving inflation. They are not needed to "pay for" stuff, the government just credits accounts for that, just as taxation involves debiting accounts. The two are not directly connected under a fiat currency. Nice study here about UK government finances that explains this in great detail: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/public-purpose/sites/bartlett_public_purpose/files/the_self-financing_state_an_institutional_analysis_of_government_expenditure_revenue_collection_and_debt_issuance_operations_in_the_united_kingdom.pdf
