Laura Bates, the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, says that it seems to be increasingly difficult to talk about sexism, equality, and women's rights in a society that perceives to have achieved gender equality. "In this 'liberal', 'modern' age, to complain about everyday sexism or suggest that you are unhappy about the way in which women are portrayed and perceived renders you likely to be labeled 'uptight', 'prudish', a 'militant feminist', or a 'bra burner,'" she explained.

But just like Bates, there are plenty of women who prove this notion wrong. And you can find many of them on the subreddit r/TrollXChromosomes. It's an online community that invites to "come for the period comics" and "stay for the cultural awareness", and many, in fact, do — the subreddit has over 817K members. The content they share and produce tackles important gender issues in all sorts of fields, including sports, health care, and work.

The reversibility of vasectomy decreases exponentially over time

Many people will say, "Well, sometimes the vasectomy can't be reversed. Are you going to doom that young man to a life of infertility?!" But what about the young girl who was forced to give birth far too young and now can never give birth again? Or died giving birth?

It is true that sometimes vasectomies cannot be reversed and I think this is a poor argument because of that. Just allow the person whose body it is to decide whether they have an abortion. The 24th week seems a reasonable point at which to limit abortion.

Nope, didn't make me even the slightest bit uncomfortable. Free vasectomies all around, particularly if mandatory, would solve a lot of issues and hurt no one. But, as long as we're at it, we might as well extend it to women as well. Doing both would drastically reduce the number of babies murdered (both before and after birth) and the number of children abused or abandoned. I also believe the procedure should be free but the reversal should not.

Now that is an interesting idea. Vasectomies for free, reversals will cost. I kind of like that.

Sex ed does reduce unwanted pregnancies, but it doesn't prevent those that result from non-consensual sex or "stealthing".

This sort of makes sense. I've never understood why men have such a hard time assuming responsibility when it comes to birth control. No excuses. Using a condom is so simple even a man can do it.

Now that I have thought about this, making access to vasectomies should be pushed for more. At 18 I never really considered that as an option. And while I know it hasn't stood the judicial test in the past, I am not so sure it would truly be a "cruel or unusual" punishment for deadbeat dads. Especially for those offenders that are fathering a bunch of kids and not providing/ caring for them. This may not be a popular opinion, but I think we overlook the right of a child to have someone make sure they have opportunities to succeed in life. IMO, if you make the choice to have sex in such a manner that could result in a child, you have the obligation to provide for it (and hopefully want to be a part of its life). If a man chooses to disregard this obligation, I am not so sure how unethical it is to prevent him from repeating this crime. To me, society's obligation is more to the person that had no decision in the consequences of an action than to the one whose decisions led to harm.

I really dont get how "Christians" care more about a fetus than they do a child that is living in poverty , they'd rather kids starve than let them collect food stamps , whats the difference ? they are both Gods creation are they not ? if so why does one get more support than the other ? i'd just like to be educated on this as it baffles me.

Not only that, we should also make damn sure the father is forced to pay child support. It takes two to make a baby, so the entire burden should not be put on the mother. An automatic deduction from his pay, at whatever adequate percentage is needed, and if he tries to not work or work under the table, he should be tracked down. If he ends up in prison, the government can pick up the payments to the mother, but have the father pay it back through work while in prison. This would solve the problems of 1) men shirking their responsibilities by claiming the child isn’t theirs, because DNA doesn’t lie, 2) the culture that equates manhood with having several baby mamas, but not giving them a penny of support money, as they would now be on the hook for LOTS of child support payments, and 3) the crime problem, as owing the government for paying your child support would mean some very long hours working while in prison. If the choice of abortion is off the table, then replace it by tying the fathers down for support.

Actually yes, men SHOULD support the women they got pregnant throughout the pregnancy, from the very first symptom. It takes two people to conceive and they should both be responsible right away. Citizenship is assigned at birth. I guess it could be assigned earlier if the country (countries) wanted to, this is a matter of a legal definition, not a God given natural state. Also: not all countries automatically grant citizenship to babies born there, in Europe I think mostly the baby gets the citizenship of the parents no matter where the labour happens. Insurance is a business, you can insure whatever the insurance company offers to insure. Although any insurance on a pregnancy before week 12 is going to be very expensive given the high rate of natual miscarriage. I'm not sure when the embryo/fetus/baby deserves to be called a person, but I do know that biologically, it is a human from the beginning, based on its human DNA. The discussion about abortion is a discussion about (...)

At 6 weeks it is NOT a fetus. That is not designated until 10 weeks of of pregnancy. At the first 2 weeks its just a clump of cells dividing & multiplying. It develops into an embryo. The embryo doesn't even look like a "human" yet. The head shape doesn't look human. Eyes are little black dots with no eyelids & not really arms & legs they look like flippers. It does not look like what the public thinks of when they hear the word "fetus". As far as heartbeat, there isn't one, because the organ that is called the heart has yet to form. Its just a very tiny group of cell tissue that is developing or has developed the capacity of electrical conductivity. That needs to come first so when there actually is a heart it can beat.. Its an embryo. It doesn't have a heartbeat. There is no heart. Just a teeny bit of electrical conduction so that when there is a heart, it can beat. That's it. If they want to consider an embryo a person, just as we are legally designated, then yes I think she's right

Does anyone here forget that conservatives didn't even want to raise or homeschool their own children during the pandemic? And we've all seen the generations of hatred in the conservative party. Sometimes a bloodline just needs to stop.

    View more comments

The pandemic isn't making this any easier, too. According to UN Women, the global champion for gender equality, there are 6 urgent issues women are facing during the time of COVID-19.

    1. Violence against women and girls. "Before the pandemic, estimates said one in three women will experience violence in their lifetime," the organization said in a statement. "As economic and social stresses rise, and movement is restricted by lockdown and stay-at-home guidance, instances of violence are likely to increase. At home, survivors of domestic violence may be trapped with their abuser, with limited access to support services, healthcare, and justice systems. And in public, women are at heightened risks of violence navigating deserted public spaces and transportation."

    2. The gender pay gap. "Around the world, women are at the frontline of the COVID-19 response as they make up the majority of health and social care workers, especially as nurses, midwives, and community health workers, and account for the majority of service staff in health facilities as cleaners, launderers, and caterers. Yet, an average gender pay gap of around 28 percent exists in the health workforce," UN Women wrote.

"Once occupation and working hours are accounted for, the gender pay gap is 11 percent. Although the health sector performs well regarding women’s participation, it still harbors discrimination against women in earnings, and full-time employment and leadership roles for women are lagging."

You know what, the part of education is really important, a lot of my misconception where ingrained directly by my mother. The white lies that i was told to make me feel better, did nothing to make open my eyes wide and realize that moat of the time, the baseline acceptable behavior should be treated as something special( i know nice guy behavior), it took a lot of time to really escape from that and see misconception a s miseducation for what it was. After many years i am finally in a loving relationship, after leaving her house and putting a lot of effort in being sincere with myself and my situation.

    3. Digital gender divide. UN Women pointed out that studies online have become the new normal but not everyone can continue their education because internet access remains a privilege. "Many around the world, including girls from poor households cannot participate in remote learning, since they lack the required tools, skills, and technologies."

"It was already a dire disadvantage that girls, women, and marginalized groups are least likely to have access to technology, and as the COVID-19 pandemic has moved so many aspects of daily life online, the lack of connectivity has become even more alarming, exacerbating existing gender inequalities."

It needs to be defined better. I saw on one them cop shows a pregnant woman was arrested because she lightly shoved her drunk husband, who the initial call was for, for being a dingbat. I heard a mom was charged for assaulting her baby because she was patting her baby on the back outside. Either the laws are too vague or police are bored, or both.

I watched a TV program that played right into this. One of my favorite comedians is Tig Nataro. She is pee your pants when you laugh funny. But she also loves to drive a tank through social norms and makes you think. She had breast cancer a number of years ago. Young. She had to have a bilateral mastectomy and chose not to have reconstruction. The only thing on her chest are are 2 long horizontal scars. No breasts. At one point she takes off her shirt and hangs it on a chair and does the rest of her show shirtless. You could sense everyone's eyes get big and heard a quiet "Ummm". It was hard to get your head around a woman standing there with no shirt on for the next 20 minutes. She got away with it only because she had no breasts. But society says she still has to wear one because she's a woman. Guys, they have breasts too, they don't get told to put a shirt on. Come on guys! Cover up! We shouldn't be seeing them.

You can NOT take organs from a corpse. Period. Every single donor is still alive, albeit artificially, when the organs are harvested. So, yes, the families permission is asked before harvest. And, yes, they are made aware of the situation and that without life support, their loved one would already be deceased.

You miss the point!! The point is that women have less control of their body than a person that is so close to death that has no consciousness or awareness of what is happening! We know very well that you don't get organs from dead people!

The whoosh is so big I think it stole a trampoline. The point is, you cannot use a dead person's organs without permission even if it saves people because it's a violation of bodily autonomy. Yet they want living women to use their organs to save a fetus regardless of her wishes. Women will have less rights to their own body than *corpses.*

Men have no right to decide what women do with their bodies. how dare they? victims of rape, health issues, financial issues are all good reasons to abort a foetus which is not a human being with a soul.

Bodily autonomy isn’t a right. No one has absolute sovereignty over their body. If so, self-harm would be a right. And everyone agrees that your rights end where another’s begins, even if the other is small and weak and dependent.

When has someone gone to jail for self harm? When has someone been charged with assault for self harm? As much as it is a bad thing, it's still literally something you have a right to do.

    4. Informal work and instability. The pandemic has deeply affected women's livelihoods and income. "Women typically earn less and hold less secure jobs than men. With economic activity at a halt during the pandemic, women working in the informal sector have seen a dramatic decline in their capacity to earn a living. Adding to the loss in income and paid work, many women are also juggling an increase in unpaid care and domestic work."

But according to UN Women, this can change. "It's on all of us to share the added burden of unpaid domestic and care work at home and speak up for a gender-aware response to the economic shock of COVID-19, including supporting women in the informal sector."

A few years ago I was walking home alone from an evening at the pub with a few people from my gaming club, wasn't a long walk, and I lived just outside of the town center but it was late at night in a small quiet town I hadn't long moved to and I lived alone. Not long after I'd split off from the last of the people I had been hanging out with, I became aware of a group of 4 lads following me, and could hear them saying something about '4 guys one girl' before they tried to get my attention. I kept walking, picked up my pace but tried to pretend I couldn't hear them. Thankfully they gave up after a while and went in a different direction but I booked it the rest of the way home, locked my door behind me and was freaked out for quite a while after.

As a child I was taught to be nice, polite and friendly like a good little girl. I grew up in a very upper middle class neighborhood in suburbia usa. I can not count the number of times I was stopped (as a child) and asked for directions, when I leaned near the car, he was holding his member. And then the times I was asked to "get in the car" to show them how to get there.. I was conditioned to feel that all of these were MY fault and I was to blame ( how dare a girl be outside riding her bike).

My mum at one point would get up extra early so that she could pick up a woman from her house and drive her to work because she had a guy follow/harass her when she walked. My mum had no issues with doing it because it kept another woman safe. My dad once help a young lady that was walking in our local park, he was at work and saw her walking very fast and asked her what was going on (he works for the local council and had he work van and uniform on) and she said that there’s a guy following her and freaking her out with his actions. Dad asked her who she was on the phone with, which turned out to be her mum who was driving to get to her as fast as she could so dad told her to go behind the work van so she was out of sight and could use ones of the multi exits and whilst she was doing that he got the guy to stand by him for over 20 mins so that she was far enough away and safe and so if she went to the police he had a great way to describe him. They called and thanked him at work.

This one always gets me. Who the h*ll would tell someone they don't know to smile? I've heard of "resting b*tch face" and I totally get it. I have "resting murderer face". When I smile casually, you can see it in my eyes, but my mouth simply becomes a straight line. If I'm laughing or telling a funny story, I have a grin and my teeth show. My passport photo (when they tell you not to smile and just let you face relax), looks like the last person you see before you're stabbed to death.

I needed to get toilet paper since I was on the last role and my period just started and I was worried I'd get there and they'd just closed. A stumbling older man clad in leather felt the need to say "smile sunshine" as I passed. Gross. To be fair my umbrella fell when I sped up and he picked it up for me and seemed nice then. So I think he was just ignorant but you don't say such stuff to a young girl, especially at night. I couldn't bring myself to say thank you but I bobbed my head and left.

I don't know ANY women who haven't had it happen at LEAST once, and Every, Single, Group...online and offline...that I've EVER taken part in and this subject has come up, has been an experience in hearing these testimonies. As well as what often happens when women refuse by "ignoring" some guy who tells her she'd "be prettier if you smile".

And she's had trouble her whole life building a career for a mistake she made when she was 22. She was the butt of jokes. They criticized everything about her looks. They also used it to deride Hilary Clinton, because clearly if she were more attractive or less feminist then Bill wouldn't have had to cheat on her.

I worked with a terrible woman who stroked her way to several promotions. Didn't physically touch the boss... It was like Oh you're so smart and Ooh you're so right firing those people etc. Just the cliche suck up and it worked. The big boss hated smart women and used this hag to help purge the place.

If you ask a man if he'd ever promote a woman based on her being willing to have sex with him, he'll get huffy and say "Of course not!" Yet he'll believe that every other man does that. Somehow it's always some other man.

Women in the broadcasting field have come forward and said that in the end they do not get more viewers collating to the amount a female athlete's skin it exposed. Women sports have always had lower ratings, exploting women doesnt change that.

I believe it is about performance. More range of movement. Men's gymnastics seems primarily about strength and control while women constantly do splits. I would think stretchy pants or unitard would limit that, but if they want to wear it they should have the option.

    5. Period poverty and stigma. "Even before the pandemic, women, and girls have been facing discrimination when they menstruate. In some parts of the world, they are seen as dirty, untouchable, or a disgrace. Whether it’s a lack of money to buy pads, tampons, or other products, access to toilets, or discriminatory laws and practices, women and girls, especially the world’s poorest, are deeply impacted by their periods," UN women continued.

The organization stated that it's especially challenging for women and girls to manage their periods safely and with dignity during a crisis.

"The provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygienic conditions are essential to protecting human health. Yet, today 500 million women and girls globally are estimated to lack adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management. This puts women and their families at greater risk of infection. Periods don’t stop for the COVID-19 pandemic, and neither should our efforts to break harmful taboos about menstruation and end period poverty."

If the good guys that we all know are out there, would call bulls#*t on the idiots who have heard "boys will be boys,"or become the envy of every male in the Ivy covered hallowed locker room. I had a friends fiancé tell me he would try and try to get a girl to bed with him on the first date. If she did, he dumped her because he figured she did it with every male. A man can leave his wife, remarry and start a whole new family with kids he has to fork out money as dad. Thing is, he's got a few left behind. But it ain't over. If these losers figure they don't owe the human beings he helped bring to life, throw their butts in a Home For Deadbeat Dads. Like the hidden places girls got sent when knocked up and she was an embarrassment. Until sex education, taught with honesty, respect and lack of fear or embarrassment , chances are babies arrive. I will not be surprised in the least the first time I see one in a tiny purse replacing accessory puppies.

During the #metoo debate my father told me he thinks that whole thing is wildly exaggerated, it can't be that so many women were sexually harassed. Then he said: I mean, you never were harassed, were you? I just started laughing because of the absurdity. Wen I was 12 I was hit on by a 40+ guy in the subway station, when I was 17 a guy at the beach started to masturbate right in front of me, a few years later a man who sat in the subway right beside me started to masturbate. And then all those countless guys whistling at me or staring at my boobs, or touching my butt in crowded places. I started to ask all my female friends and coworkers, and all of them said that they were sexually harassed before, ALL of them.

In 1985, I did a survey of 15 women that I knew, all over age 20, and asked them one question "Have you ever been molested?" ALL but ONE of them answered YES! And although I didn't ask any questions, it still led to many discussions about it. All but one had been molested by a family member or a close family friend. Only 1 had been molested by the "danger stranger." The youngest had been age 5 and the oldest age 15. The molesters had all been adult men.

This happened while riding back home with my friend and her uncle on a scooter,it was late night my dad was waiting for me in the bus stop besides the signal and we were on the road (one of the 6 parallel roads)in front of the signal now at 180secs,her uncle intially interrupts our conversation (with my friend) so JUST when I turned my head away from my friend to respond to him,by then he had placed his hands on my thighs way up. I just freezed, and hoped that it was accidental but he did'nt lift his hands until the signals changed. And when I whispered about this to my friend who was sitting behind me she blatantly, assured what I had previously "hoped" for but it was'nt.

    6. Underrepresentation as leaders in health. "Women make up 70 percent of the health and social care workforce, and they are more likely to be front-line health workers, especially as nurses, midwives, and community health workers. This exposure raises women’s risk of infection (in fact, infections among female health care workers are up to three times higher than among their male counterparts). Yet, women remain in the background of decision making, underrepresented in health sector leadership, and missing from the center of the COVID-19 response."

There might be a record number of women serving in the 117th Congress but society still needs to go a long way and start treating them the way they deserve.

Damon Tripodi - Planned Parenthood doesn't only do abortions. Emergency contraception isn't an abortion - it prevents a fertilized egg from implanting & growing without/before a positive pregnancy test is even possible, to prevent the need for an abortion. Good on OP for seeking immediate care. My heart hurts for her that she had to have shame and extra trauma heaped on top of her trauma, especially in the name of Christianity. That's certainly NOT what every version of the Bible I've read says to do/think/say.

Made me wear the borrowed gym shorts like a scarlet letter to make everyone aware that this 12 year old was apparently slutty.

If you think that car is following you, navigate to a police station, or even fire station. If you can't get ahold of the non emergency line, beep SOS in morse code until you see a uniform. Usually just going into that parking lot will make them leave. Don't mess around with your safety!

Unfortunately this is too true, but there are some men who have to do the same due to many years being the victims of bullying and even now over 20 years later still feel paranoid about people they don't know, or places they've never been to. The world would be a better place if the perpetrators of these crimes did not exist, but sadly that may be a wish too far at the present time :-(

Have got flak for keeping my drink tucked in my cleavage when at pub with mates or social gatherings. My answer of "much harder to spike my drink when it's with me all the time" to their "why you do that?" was deemed being overly paranoid. Yeah the one time I did not at a pub ended up getting my drink spiked and it did not end well. I'll just stay paranoid with chilled cleavage and melting ice thanks all the same

In college a female almost kind of friend was quite tipsy one evening. This sad little creepy dude insisted on walking her home after she’d refused multiple other offers. Someone called me and told me. I lived in the next dorm to hers, so I went over to make sure she was home safe. She got pissed at me for it. By Monday most of her whole group was pissed at me because I’m not her father etc.

Hell, being a little girl is sexualized. I stopped shopping entirely at several stores once my oldest jumped from toddler to little girl sizes (6!) and I couldn't find anything that wasn't short skirt or collar off the shoulder or crop top. And that's not even touching the difficulty in finding a 1-piece swimsuit for little girls...smh.

This right here! Kids are going to have sex. It's a fact. The whole "Abstinence only" bullshit and the "parents are the only ones who can teach their kids about sex" bullshit causes more teen pregnancy than anything else I know. Teach kids what it is, how to do it safely and give them what they need NOT to get pregnant. And abortion will go down.

Yes!! If you want abortion to stop, stop the reasons for unwanted teen pregnancies (or unwanted pregnancues in general) at the source! (I specified unwanted teen pregnancies since my mother had a teen pregnancy. It was very wanted, since my mother just wanted to be loved, and a child would love her unconditionally. They are very close, even 21 years later)

If you believe your teenager will refrain from having sex just because you said so, you're deluded. Protect your children by ensuring they can't get pregnant or contract a STD. And talk to them about the physical, emotional, and social implications of having sex. Their brains are too immature to imagine consequences; you have to do that for them.

As a staunch right-winger, I very much like this idea. Not overly fond of the "without parental consent" but I understand the reason. So long as it's made 100% clear that it provides zero protection against diseases and isn't 100% against pregnancy (and that'll probably be a horrible pregnancy).

That is why it's very crucial that every school have a robust sex education program. Sex education and contraceptives go hand in hand. If a person doesn't know how to use a condom giving that person a condom not going to work well.

It does. My father was quiet when my mother was around. She treated him like the help. Now that she's in a home, he's more open. At first, there was a lot of tension between us (he said some hurtful things and had a poor sense of boundaries in conversations), but we pretty much worked things out. I'm more expressive with him. It turns out I have a bit of temper, too, but the rare storm doesn't last and the next call, we're joking and playing "Name-that-scientist/artist" etc.

When I was a teenager in the '80s, my girlfriend told me she wanted to have sex with me (Yay!). We were under 18 at the time. She was able to borrow my car, go to Planned-Parenthood with her friend, and get a free prescription for birth-control - without her parents permission, and was also able to go for regular exams. Under Texas Gov. Abbott, Planned-Parenthood has been all but shut down, except in large cities, because they have to have a Dr. who has attending capabilities at a hospital within a certain distance from the PP clinic. Not easy when you live 200 miles away from Austin, Houston, or even El Paso. These men in government are taking away reproductive healthcare from millions of (mostly economically disadvantaged) women in the name of "saving children" for whom they (Abbott, DeSantis, etc.) have no interest in protecting once they're born. It's disgusting.

Statistics have shown that following these rules have no impact on if a woman will be assaulted, they just impact how seriously she will be taken afterwards.

Victims of *any* crime are never blameworthy of it. There of course is gross negligence (leaving the door of your house open during vacation after you visibly stacked up gold bars inside – even though it is still a crime if they are taken), but this should never be applied to people. Whatever you wear or say gives no one the right to touch you. I do not comprehend how anyone would try to put a crime into perspective by saying the victim provoked it. If someone has so little self-control to avoid being "provoked" into comitting a crime, emigrating to a lonely island migth be a good idea.

Victim-blaming is sad, shameful behavior, but there are still good practices to follow that can help you avoid being a victim, and unfortunately yes that means giving up certain rights that one SHOULD have. The OP here is right though - if women are widely taught that they should avoid ___ to avoid sex, then men will come to think that ___ is their territory, open season for sex. The same logic goes for "people only go down that street to buy drugs", nevermind that its a public road. In the end, these are just helpful tips to navigate a f****d social system, but some people act like they are the solution.

Interesting thought but I believe the predator would attack regardless since they go for their type. Telling other women to go ahead and cut through the dark alley alone so those few who still did anyway won't ... what? won't be the only victims? Ridiculous. That's exactly like telling hikers to not avoid the rabid coyote because they'd be less safe if they went a different route. Bull***t. Sounds like predator complaining that he's out of victims.

I don't really understand this one. Burglars are assholes, but you don't leave your door unlocked to prove that point. Burglars won't stop burgling because of it. Same with rapists. They are assholes, and I don't believe they will change their behaviour when women stop avoiding dark alleys. If anything it will make their crimes easier. Maybe it's a matter of prinicpal versus practical.

Thank you. I see women attacking other women all the time for things like learning self defense or carrying pepper spray. You're called a traitor and an internalised misogynist and a victim blamer for acknowledging that humans are s**t and can hurt you, and that no amount of education will stop s**t people from hurting you. I'm sick of it. Teaching women how to defend themselves is not traitorous or misogynistic. If nothing else, shaming women for it is traitorous and misogynistic, because you're saying you'd rather they be raped or murdered to justify your movement for a crimeless utopia, instead of preventing any suffering in the current shitty world.

I read a story one time about a young woman who was wearing a baggy oversized tee shirts and board shorts was being harassed for what she was wearing, her harasser, Male (of course) was wearing a baggy Oversized tee shirt and board shorts. He didn't like it when he was called out by one of his mates.

One of the scariest things about the Sarah Everard case is the fact that it was an off duty police officer who killed her. A policeman who had been spoken to about indecent exposure a week or so before. Girls are taught to find a police officer if we feel unsafe, who do we go to now.

The cop who raped and killed her dumped her body in a park and set fire to it. Days later, when everyone was out searching for her, he took his kids out to the very same park to play. Right next to where he dumped her. You need the death penalty in the UK. Don’t tell me this scumbag can be ‘rehabilitated’.

100% agree, with men being put in a curfew we would see a massive drop from the current 78.7% homicide rates seeing as that is the male victims %, we could maybe get things to be more equal, like a 50/50 split instead of men hogging all the spotlight being victims of murder

Luckily, I can still enjoy old movies and see them as made up stories from a reality that was "back then". What do you want to do with them, burn them because they don't fit in the "now"? We already burn the books, destroy statues etc. And yes, I still watch reruns of "Friends" and I like them because they're funny.

Why can't you watch it? Some things are meant just to make you laugh, as simple as that. It's not healthy to cringe at everything and look at old TV shows with holy indignation, "OMG, how could they say that???". It did make you laugh once, which means it was funny and still is. Are you scared that someone will judge you because you laugh?

Strangest thing... I was once asked by a coworker about hanging out in nightclubs/bars... and i said something about the music I like being at specific spots... and they happened to be in the 'gaybourhood' (which is a term I didn't even hear until a little while ago...) - he asked me 'wouldn't it freak you out to be hit on someone same-gender' I said "I'm not used to being approached like that by anyone. I'd freak a bit if I received *any* unwanted/unexpected attention. Gender is NOT the issue." - during this time I was leveling a bit of a 'wtf' look at him... because he's gay... like... what on earth are you asking me?

Slightly off, but how much is it nature vs nurture? My male dog runs and hides when I am upset and need cuddles ( I looked it up and several studies show female dogs are more receptive to human emotions.). As has been said, it is up to us to teach men and women to be better communicators.

Yup. My mum got pregnant again when I was 19. I expected to be the live in babysitter. What I didn't expect was for my little 12 yo sister to also be roped into babysitting when my 16 year old brother, who was entirely capable, was never asked to lift a finger. Because 'he's a boy'.

My wife says that "Men live in fear of women laughing at them. Women live in fear that men will murder them". I had a great awakening after I got together with her about a great many things I took for granted. How she doesn't walk near a SUV or van in the parking lot for one example. There are more, sadly, a great deal more.

Most men will understand, what's really hurting the discussion is the display and messaging from the media (Hollywood, Twitter etc.). They shape images that lead to rejection instead of making people acknowledge the problems more

I know a lot of men believe women "want a strong man to take care of them and protect them". Why do you think they *might* want that strong man to protect them? It's not because there are lions and cheetahs roaming our streets. I used to feel good about myself when a woman said "I feel safe with you", of something like that. Then I realized that it was because she probably felt comfortable that I wouldn't rape her or hurt her. It made me sad that they were afraid like this.

and this, among MANY other examples of sexism, racism, and other bigotry, is why job hiring info should consist of credentials and nothing else. no photo (appearance, gender, ethnicity), no name (gender, ethnicity), just why the person is qualified for the job, and maybe some bits about why they're interested in the job. studies have shown that women and minorities consistently get hired much faster if this is done, before someone's prejudices can come into play over how the person is a woman, looks asian or latinx, looks like a thug (tattoos, piercings, etc).

Men so often say that women should just get into professions where the pay is better, if we're bothered by low income. And then we won't get as many job opportunities as men do, and we're paid less than men. We're turned down for being women. Sometimes I worry about this, because I'm trying to get into a more male dominated career, actually my previous career goals were male dominated as well and I couldn't even get a summer job at a place where I had been interning for free for over a month, and I knew that 2 people were leaving the company.. I was working my ass off for free, and they hired some young guys for the summer instead. Guys that had never worked for that company. Another thing that I've been wondering about for a few days now. In the game industry, programmers usually get paid a lot more than artists, or so I've understood. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. But like, why? Artists do a lot of hard work to make the game look nice. Creating art isn't easier than programming.

SEXIST: Treating anyone differently because of his/her/their gender. Don't ask a "man" to open a jar, ask the strongest person in the room to do it, no matter the gender.

That's just hurting kids being born to parents who do not want them. They will most likely keep the child instead of giving them up for adoption. They will mistreat that child. I personally don't believe in abortion except in certain cases. A lot of women just do it as a form of birth control. And not even discuss with the father. A woman doesn't get pregnant by herself. The is unfair not discuss with the father. He might want to raise the child by himself.

I lost a good friend, me and her use to go have so much fun together going to put put, paintball, gokarting, etc. she was helping me get out of my bubble, then one day I asked her out and she said she only saw me as a friend, I was ok with this but she stopped all communication with me after a while, I know that I may have been in the wrong but I got confused from the kisses, hand holding and cuddling, is that normal?

I don't think you should be sad. I understand you invested feelings and time and energy in this person, but was she really investing the same in you? Maybe, hopefully, she realised her behaviour and didn't want to hurt you more. But I think it was just a "I see you as a friend, as long as I can get my needs met with you and wait around for someone I believe is better than you, but not you".

A friend of mine, with MS, was in an open marriage--she was married to a man, but they both had outside partners. Her outside partmer was female, which didn't bother him at all. At one point, he started to become very secretive about who his outside partner(s) was/were. He and my friend had just bought a big farmhouse that was going to need a lot of renovation--did I mention my friend has MS? After they bought the farmhouse, he finally introduced her to his girlfriend--then announced she was moving into the farmhouse. The two of them seemed to think that my friend would do *all* the renovations, and seemed to think that my friend would wait on the two of them hand and foot. Her husband was very surprised when she divorced him, her female partner divorced her own husband, and my friend and her partner moved halfway across the country.

I started a new job after being on maternity leave with my second child. I admit, I'd let things slide, and was weighing more than I should. My new boss, who liked a "joke" was known, as I found out, for laughing at people's weight, hair loss, looks, etc. Anything he could find to "joke" about, he did. I hadn't been there long when he started on my weight. I was so embarrassed that I joined a slimming club, and lost all the weight and more. As he didn't have that to joke about, he said to me, "I wouldn't mind a go around the block with you now you've lost that weight". I laughed it off but was disgusted. I kept it all to myself as I was embarrassed that I was being treated like this. Then he started being horrible to me because I asked another manager to help me with a problem. I lost it. I went to HR, and spilled everything he said to offend people. Basically I accused him of bullying and sexual harassment. He ended up losing his job. And a few weeks later, I got it. Sweet justice.

I never romanticized anything. I basically raised myself. I've never been taught too. The parents are teaching their children this, that's where the outrage should be. And a person can break any cycle when raising their children, if they don't like something. I've broke certain cycles I endured as a child. But it wasn't anything like this. Then again, I'm not like most women

F**k polite, be fair, be reasonable, but if someone starts disrespecting your boundaries only give them one polite warning, because if they keep going at that point staying polite won't cut it. you deserve as much respect as you give to other people, and if the other person is not giving it, you don't owe them it.

I think it's important to note that men are actually wired this way. My mom made a decent feminist out of me. Try to do half the work in the household, paternity leave for a total of 2 years (2 kids) ... I'd say I'm firmly in the feminist camp. Yet I still notice that first impressions are always base emotions such as "I'd hit that". I notice that it's just what my lizard brain tells me ... it's my conscious decision not to be a creep about it and behave normally. What I'm trying to say is that boys are not so much "taught" to be creeps, they're "not taught" how to behave properly, "not taught" that we're not cavemen anymore.

I'm a straight woman and I always instantly categorize every man I meet into 'I would', 'I might', or 'I wouldn't'. It's not conscious or deliberate, it just happens, and it has no bearing on whether I end up being friends with them or not. I'm also very aware that just because I would, doesn't mean that they would too!

I saw this a lot in early elementary school, although I didn’t know then what I was experiencing. My best friend is a guy. I’ve grown up around him and his family, so it’s like he’s my brother. But since we hung out a lot, everyone started thinking we were a couple. We apparently couldn’t be just friends, since at that point I was a girl and he was a boy. This was in second grade. We were seven. Everyone teasing us was seven too. These SEVEN YEAR OLDS had already been taught that men and women can’t have a healthy non-romantic relationship with each other. Incredibly sad.

I dumped one my best friend, not for being a sex offender, but for simply not having respect for his fiancee and sleeping around. And for disparaging me for not wanting to behave in a similar fashion. I tried being tactful about it at first and tell him that I wasn't ok with his behaviour but eventually had to block him, in his mind "out of the blue." One of our mutual friends had no idea what he was doing and told me he was heartbroken and fell into depression for having lost my friendship. Then I told her why, and she blocked him too. I'm not saying I've always been the ideal role model, but at least I can recognize the errors of my past and work towards rectifying my shortcomings. Edit: spelling

Just know you are NOT responsible for the actions of every human being who has the same gender identity as you; their actions are out of your control, but do you know what IS in your control? You, your actions, and your beliefs. As long as you are trying to be a good human being like the most of us, you're doing good. I've been fuckzoned by so many guys over the years. It goes like this: we have fun, it seems like we're dating, the guy seems interested, and then *BAM* they say "I'm not looking anything serious right now" or "I'm not ready for a relationship" and then usually within a year of those words that guy is in a committed relationship with somebody else. Sometimes even married, for real. Some of them still try to get into my pants while they're in that relationship. Some have even said that nobody will ever want more than sex from me, so I shouldn't even bother hoping that some day I'll find somebody. Such darlings these men.

It was at a church festival, I was 9 or 10 years old. There was can-throwing, and every time I bent down for the ball, a repulsive older guy grabbed my bum and groaned intrusively. He did this with all the children, boys and girls. Fortunately, I didn't live far away and ran home quickly to tell my mom all this. She tried to hold the guy accountable, but he had disappeared.

This is why I would teach my young relatives (never having kids) where to kick. No adult should ever be grabbing children like this. EVER.

THIS! I was like 12 or 13 and waiting at the subway station for some friends, and this like 40+ guy started hitting on me. My friends never showed so I went home, and I was terrified the whole time that he would be following me.

I grew up in the 60s, and it took me years to realize that the boss at my first job was a creep. Mr. Anderson at Thrifty's, you should not have been sitting thigh-to-thigh with your 18yo employee and putting your hand on her knee. Yes, I was that naive.

That is pretty much how many of the women in my family ended up mothers/wives. My great-grandmother was pregnant at 15 and her (30yrs older) boss was responsible. The shotgun wedding did not go as planned as the coward responsible ended up getting hunted down and tried to kill my GGgrandfather day before the wedding, but ended up being shot by the police GGGF had with him from the town. Eventually another (older) man graciously "accepted her barsteward" and married her. My grandmother was 16, first job after finishing her apprenticeship as a chef during the Great Depression (had been yanked from school early) and working at the store my (much much older) grandfather owned. Zero sex ed at that time so did not take long before she was pregnant by him and there was a shotgun wedding. He already had 3 other kids. My mother? It was her teacher at night school, similarly much, older man and they ended up getting married and voila I arrived, shortly followed by my brothers and sisters

I think I was 9 the first time a college guy hit on me. Tried to get me to his room while we were on vacation and swimming in the hotel pool. That's what I get for developing breasts early. Thank god for my cousin who made a ton of noise to attract attention so he'd go away.

My friends dads friend offered to take me to the store to buy some chips. I was 13 my friends parents knew the guy liked me and still let me go. He had to have been between 35 -40 🤷🏻‍♀️ I went with him, he took me to his house, gave me coke (not cola), rubbed my feet, played the guitar and sang you look wonderful tonight to me! He spent a while trying to convince me that I would enjoy oral sex if I tried it. Scary/ sad/ strange part is I didn’t really think it was all that weird at the time! I kissed him on his forehead because he was in my face wanting me to kiss him when he took me back to my friends house. Several years later he messed around with 2 of her other friends and her. I’m not sure why those parents let him hang around!

I was 8 and it is still burned into my brain. I was babysitting/helping out for a neighbour after school as she had 3 other little kids (5,3,2) and just had a baby (4weeks) and my mum would hire me out for babysitting round the neighbourhood at that age. The neighbour was in the kitchen feeding the older kids. I was changing the baby in the nursery off their bedroom and the dad must have come home from work. I was focussed on the baby and did not hear him come in I guess. He's suddenly behind me, sliding a hand down my back, and said "you look ripe enough to have your own soon" (puke). His wife comes in and starts shrieking at me what was I doing with her husband. He is standing there in his shirt, tie and socks, with no pants on. I grab the baby, give him to her and bolt home. I copped an earful off my mum about "leaving the neighbours early". Mum did not want to hear why

It does if your view is myopic, bigoted, or just plain wrong. For example, the idiocy of believing without proof all survivors, and several people had their lives ruined because someone decided to lie. There's a reason our justice system requires proof.

According to a quick Google search, there are roughly 50 million trans people on the planet. Don't come into these comments with your story of a handful of people with felonies who did this once. Y'all, we're talking 50 million people being denied the right to pee because of a few weirdos. If ALL men or ALL women were banned from public restrooms because some men/women did something inappropriate, y'all would be pretty upset, right? Don't punish everyone for what you fear from a few. You're not the gender police. Let people pee.

The thing is, y'all can ban trans people from bathrooms but all that's gonna do is make it so trans people can't piss, it's not gonna stop all the f*****g weirdos from going into the bathrooms and perving on people because if you're already a pervert then why would you give a damn about the law? And my advice for trans/gender-queer people when someone tells you that you can't use the bathroom you wanna f*****g use: Tell 'em you're gonna piss on the floor and see what they do ;)

All disabled toilets are unisex. All of them. People have never had a problem with this. Is it because disabled women aren't at risk of sexual abuse? Or is it because this whole "debate" is absolutely nothing to do with women's safety and everything to do with obsessively policing other people's gender expression because a minority of fragile-ass cis folks can't handle the possibility that transness exists in the real world?

I remember 15 years ago when I was in high school, the girl who got pulled out of class the most for dress code violations was a burn victim. Looking back, that girl clearly lived through some s**t and was trying to reclaim her own skin. There was zero reason for adults to keep interrupting her education to punish her for that.

In the girls only (public) high school I attended our junior year uniform was a tea length, shapeless sack that you were required to cinch in at the waist with the belt. The senior uniform was a close fitting, tea length, A line dress. Both done to prevent students being able to cover up a pregnancy for very long. Detention if you were found without your belt or if your senior dress was "loose fitting". Students who did end up pregnant were expelled immediately to "prevent contagious behaviours" (wtf??). We were also given detention if the male teachers got "distracted" by us "looking provocative" in our shapeless sacks/A-lines if our knees showed when sitting down. This from a school that protected a number of male teachers for decades whom groomed girls and expelled anyone/lawyered up if there were complaints about indecent assaults

Or hiring people that don't have a single clue just to have diversity in their company. Promoting people just to fill quotas will hurt all workers if said people can't do their job. Purely making such things depending on the abilities to get the job done without considering everything else should be the goal

Do you think every old, straight, white man has deserved their promotion? If anything, people outside that demographic have worked -harder- to get where they are because people like you won't take them seriously unless they have the credentials to back them up. The world naturally has a vast diversity of people, and you think it's just coincidence that the ones in charge all happen to be from this one small demographic? Or that they're there because they're the only ones who are qualified? If we all promoted the best candidates for the jobs, a little over half of management would be female, with all different races and religions and creeds and sexualities represented.

What are they supposed to do? Be racist towards whites and sexist towards men to be able to tick the diversity box. Example of this is whilst going for a job as a fire person I got shortlisted out of hundreds who applied I didnt get the job, only a few did. A few months after they had a recruitment sign up for non-whites to apply. Guess they couldnt tick the diversity box.

My husband had a vasectomy at 34 but before that, he put a sample in a sperm bank, because you never know... When he was 45 years old he decided he'd never have other kids anyway, so he asked the bank to destroy the sample... Easy. And yes, I've been contraception free for 15 years - thank you, hubby :)

or you know, only have unprotected sex when you want children. (im not talking about rape victims of course or such, but the post is not referring them either) it is the responsibility of both of you. i dont like this kind of agressive stance against men just because you are frustrated with the abortion ban. i dont support abortion ban either, just to be clear. but this kind of communication is clearly hate mongering. you could say mandatory iud for women. but you did not, because all you wanted is to attack men, to stir up some hate. just to be clear: i do consider vasectomy because my wife dont want any more kids and as a normal human being i of course wont force a pregnancy on her. so i am not far from what you describe, but your post is just stupid. (also the pregnancy rate after vasectomy reversal is about 30-90%, so there is a fat chance that the guy will be steril after the "reversible vasectomy" - from Mayo Clinic)

Also, men are the ones telling us what we need to do with our bodies: if they weren't telling us to take birth control or get sterilized or just stop having sex until we're married, we wouldn't be saying any of this. Why shouldn't we hate men when they're trying to control us? Pregnancy RISKS OUR LIVES. And men don't even want to wear condoms to prevent us from facing that potentially deadly ordeal. Wouldn't you hate anyone who said that to you?

It's not THE problem but it is part of the problem, yes.

And if women want to be strong they must act like total jerks and be as manly as possible according to the "empowerment" messages in the media. I think ignoring the media would be a good step for everybody to improve the overall interaction with others

Sheldon on Big Bang. I know he "supposedly" had Asperger's, But it was way too often dismissed, by all of the characters.

This is happening at my job right now. We are on alert for 2 guys that are seeking out a cashier. It's crazy

At my first job there were plenty of older men hitting on me all the time. It was really creepy. There was also my second boss' son who liked to hide behind shelves and then tried to grope female co-workers as we passed by. He even succeeded at that every now and then.

When I worked in retail a customer genuinely fell in love with one of the saleswoman, but was really subtle and gentle about it, certainly didn't ask upfront for her number, took him weeks to ask her out... They ended up married with two kids :)

Actually what would you say if it went like this - Hello how are you would it be okay if I asked you for your phone number and would you like to go for a walk or out to dinner (let her choose the restaurant) and sometimes you will get a phone number it's in the approach and attitude and behavior.

Don't ask women out while they are at work. They have to be nice to customers, even creepy dudes who make them uncomfortable.

As long as there are managers who will insist she treat customers as demi gods and will fire her for making a customer unhappy, yes, it's a big deal.
