We all love a good TV show to relax to after a long day when you are either too tired or don’t have enough time to get invested in a feature-length movie. One hour of solid entertainment that will keep you hooked enough to want to come back the next day for another episode is exactly what you need in a situation like this.
Great Britain has always been known for producing some of the best content in the world of TV series. British shows like Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, and BBC’s Sherlock, have long become classics and have acquired huge fandoms around the globe. Even if you haven’t seen any of them (which is pretty weird, how did you manage that?), you definitely know what their stories are about.
Unlike some other countries where the majority of TV shows are created in one particular genre—usually a dramatic love story—UK TV shows don’t limit their creators. Top British TV shows explore diverse premises, from the earlier years of England’s legendary King Arthur and his trusted friend and counselor Merlin (Merlin), to office sitcoms (The Office), to social commentaries on contemporary issues (Black Mirror).
The very first British TV show saw the light of day in 1932 on BBC and was called The Man With the Flower in his Mouth. As TV gained popularity, BBC grew to become the country’s largest broadcast company and produced a huge number of amazing TV shows, but today you can also find many British shows on Netflix.
You can argue indefinitely as to which series can be considered the best British TV shows of all time, but there definitely are some British dramas that everyone who appreciates extended formats of storytelling should watch.

Luther
Luther
2010 | BBC One | Seasons: 5
Starring Idris Elba as the Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, this TV show tells the story of a police officer who is dedicated to his work to the point where it becomes an obsession. It explores his complicated relationship with a brilliant murderer and psychopath Alice Morgan, as she helps him solve the murder of his wife and gradually persuades him to leave his life in London and follow her. Studded with magnificent performances, Luther is a must-watch if you love psychological crime thrillers.
Peaky Blinders
Peaky Blinders
2013 | BBC Two | Seasons: 6
Peaky Blinders is a great choice for those who enjoy both crime dramas and period TV shows. Loosely based on the endeavors of a real urban youth gang of the same name that was active in the English city of Birmingham between the 1880s and 1910s, this TV series depicts the exploits of a mixed Irish and Romani crime family soon after the end of World War I. Led by the charismatic and dangerous crime boss Tommy Shelby, played by Cyllian Murphy, the gang holds Birmingham in terror and becomes a huge problem for law enforcement. With each season, we see the gang extend its grip even further both in terms of geography and power.
Brilliant show and even better acting. Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy...I mean do you need any more names? Tommy's rise to power is a wild and will always keep you entertained.
A top notch series - great acting, sets...... and the music!!!!. Settle back for a wild and amazing ride that will tick all of your senses.
I've binged on the whole 6 series in a few weeks, it's very, very good.
Killing Eve
Killing Eve
2018 | BBC America | Seasons: 4
Another TV show where the protagonist and the antagonist develop an obsession towards each other, Killing Eve explores this weird relationship between intelligence investigator Eve Polastri and psychopathic assassin Villanelle. Having recently joined an undercover division of MI6, Polastri begins her chase that draws her dangerously closer and closer to her target. An interesting detail for a series where both the protagonist and the villain are female, each season of the show had a different female head writer, even though, originally, the novel series was adapted from a story written by a male author named Luke Jennings.
The Crown
The Crown
2016 | Netflix | Seasons: 4
The Crown created quite a buzz when it was released, as this historical TV show had the reign of Queen Elizabeth II as its principal storyline. Starting in the period shortly after World War II and Elizabeth’s marriage to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the show follows its protagonist through historical events and personal challenges as the Queen of England over the course of four seasons. If the behind-the-scenes of the royal court and the life of the British monarchy that is kept away from the public eye is something you enjoy, make sure you don’t miss this TV series.
I just watched the last episode a week ago - I love the series! Great cast! Anyway, I had a feeling that the Royal family f.cked their life as they could. ☹️
Vera
Vera
2011 | ITV | Seasons: 12
Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope may look like an ordinary, not very sharp employee who is counting her days until retirement, but behind that deceiving appearance you will find a smart, dedicated professional with keen senses. Originally the main character in a series of crime novels by Ann Cleeves, Vera works in the fictional Northumberland & City Police together with sergeants Joe Ashworth and Aiden Healy. She might be fighting her own demons on the inside, but on the outside, her calculating mind and superior detective skills help her uncover multiple crimes in Vera.
Also extremely watchable. The Brits make much better shows than USA, because they don't pander to demographics ("Oh we mustn't upset the Bible Belters, we mustn't upset anyone!"), don't just cast good looking actors, don't stick to the same old worn out stereotypes and tropes and they have better writers.
I am sorry - but Shaun Micallef has brilliantly and perfectly made this impossible for me to watch without laughing - no offense to anyone to who enjoys this show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zP-Hp5-eFE
One of the best shows on telly, the main actor is incredibly talented, her accent is perfection...as is her acting. The scenery is stunning. The writing is infallible. Highly recommended
So good. You can re-watch the episodes without getting bored. There's not a lot of interpersonal dramatics between the core actors stories and the cast of characters playing criminals are very believable. Interesting stories, and it's not all just women being murdered like many American shows. You can watch full episodes for free on YT, there are 11 seasons, otherwise in the US you'll need Prime and Britbox.
Call The Midwife
Call the Midwife
2012 | BBC One | Seasons: 11
This period drama takes the viewer to a not-so-distant past of the 1950-1960s in the poorer districts of London's East End. Midwife Jenny Lee, together with her colleagues and nuns of a nursing covenant, have to deal with the problems of poverty and the poor state of health care in post-war England. But as up to 100 babies are born each month in the district their covenant is located in, the main duty for the midwives and nuns remains providing safe childbirth to the impoverished women. Call the Midwife gives an interesting insight into the social problems of the post-war society and is very thought-provoking, as the audience can’t help but wonder how much things have or haven’t changed in the modern day.
Always makes me happy to watch this show. The relationships the midwives have with their patients and with each other is heartwarming. I keep Wikipedia open when watching as it is set in the...50s?..and as time progresses, they introduce English history, laws, etc., that as an American, I am not as familiar with.
Though heartbreaking at times, it is so good! The first few seasons, all of the stories of births etc were true and in the books it was based on. Some great casting as well.
Watch the very first episode and you'll know whether it's for you. Wow!
This was good. I watched it even though it's not my sort of thing - but it does draw you in.
Happy Valley
Happy Valley
2014 | BBC One | Seasons: 2
This crime drama revolves around the life of Catherine Cawood, a police sergeant in West Yorkshire, as she deals with the trauma of losing her teenage daughter to suicide after she was raped and gave birth to a son. When the man responsible for this horrendous act is released from prison, Catherine becomes obsessed with finding him. Far from being cheerful, as the title might suggest, this drama gives you insight into Catherine’s police work, as she uncovers another crime and deals with problems in her own family. Happy Valley won the BAFTA Award for the Best Drama Series in 2015.
Absolutely brilliant drama. With amazing acting by Sarah Lancashire.
Another wonderful drama...very real, gritty and uncompromising. An absolute must watch.
The Last Kingdom
The Last Kingdom
2015 | BBC Two | Seasons: 5
The Last Kingdom is another book adaptation hitting the silver screen. Based on the historical novel series The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, it tells the story of the birth of England in the 9th and 10th century. We follow the path of the protagonist Uhtred, who was the heir to the throne of Northumbria but was enslaved in his childhood by Danish invaders. The show has its share of fictional details, yet it creates a very compelling narration of the fight for freedom, love, betrayal, and honor that led to the creation of the early kingdom of England.
This is on Netflix only, BBC dropped it after 2 seasons for some mysterious reason. Excellent series, similar but much better than Vikings
Endeavour
Endeavour
2012 | ITV | Seasons: 9
Britain has given us quite a few names when it comes to detective stories. Many of them were adapted for the big or silver screen. One such name is Colin Dexter, the author of the series of detective novels Inspector Morse. Published from 1975 through 1999, the novels were adapted into a TV show. Following its success alongside a spin-off Lewis about Morse’s partner sergeant–now detective Robert Lewis, Endeavour was created as a prequel, depicting Morse’s younger years at the beginning of his career of fighting crime in his native Oxford.
Yes.Moves kinda slow at times, but still a good show. I think my wife and I have been watching these British shows a bit to much because we've started using the slang. The other day, she said something had been nicked...
Endeavour is the first name Morse would never reveal in his series.
Load More Replies...Really enjoyed this portrayal of a young Morse - cleverly intertwined characteristics and themes of the future Morse - and the support cast was excellent too. Definitely worth the watch.
Although I love John Thaw, I actually preferred the Endeavour series.
Line Of Duty
Line of Duty
2012 | BBC Two | Seasons: 6
Another British police TV show on the list, Line of Duty is about the daily life of an Anti-Corruption Unit 12. As the protagonist Steve Arnott, who was transferred to this unit after he refused to unlawfully cover up an event in his previous team, his partner Kate Fleming, and other colleagues uncover cases of corruption within the fictional Central Police Force, they see clearer with each step how deeply-rooted it is. Their ultimate goal is to reveal the identity of a mysterious person or persons going under the pseudonym of H. They come to learn that H plays a key role in running the activities of an organized crime group, and now need to find him or them within the police force.
This show is riveting! Maybe Brits are used to this kind of quality, but we yanks aren't. And it definitely makes me wonder about corruption in our own police force.
Bridgerton
Am I allowed to say that this is......... really awful!!?
I dislike shows that lie about what history was like intensly and this show is one of the worst for that.
Bodyguard
I believe this was intended too be a limited series and I was do good. I love Keeley Hawes!
Sherlock
Broadchurch
This! It is totally worth the watch. Crime, drama, suspense, tension....it's brilliant!
I keep meaning to watch it but never got around to!
Load More Replies...Incredible show! First season covers the investigation into the murder of a young boy (keeps you guessing every episode who the killer is!) and the second season covers the trial of the murderer. Third season is a time jump and covers a completely new case. Great cast -- David Tennet, Olivia Colman, Jodie Whitaker, etc.
Complex and interesting, the characters are realistic, not sappy or overly dramatic.
A Very English Scandal
Yes, you're correct. That is Paddington and Phoenix Buchanan. I guess things didn't turn out so bad after all.
Vanity Fair
Victoria
Love this show! Some inaccuracies, but usually understandable. Jenna Colman was the perfect choice.
The Miniaturist
All Creatures Great & Small
Saw the original not this one. Read the books. The original vet practice continues in Thirsk as chronicled in the series "The Yorkshire Vet".
The original is hilarious, Tristan and Siegfried are the best. This version is pretty and heartwarming with gorgeous views and it's quite good.
I haven't seen the original, but this one was fantastic. Even my dad approved!
Ted Lasso
Skins
Downton Abbey
Sanditon
I loved it and am an Austen fan. It's very well acted. Season 3 is coming!
I just finished the second season on the weekend. Not a bad portrayal, though I have heard some complaints.
Outlander
Lots of historical inaccuracies, and the accents are all over the place. Treat it as historical fiction from a different timeline, and you'll be fine.
Men In Kilts
Poirot
Davis Suchet is perfection as Poirot, there are lots of episodes and all worth watching, for the story and the gorgeous locations, furniture, costumes
My favorite ever!! Love him! He's so charming! I cannot watch The Final Curtain, but have watched all the others multiple times!
The It Crowd
This is probably my favorite show of all time. I can't explain why, it's just brilliant. I'm not even in IT and I absolutely adore it.
One of the best British comedies ever!!! "I'll just put this over here ... with the rest of the fire."
It's very funny indeed, but the writer (same as Father Ted) is not a very nice person. If you can get past this it's really worth a watch, Richard Ayoade is sensational!
Death In Paradise
Can't believe I had to scroll down this far past so many shows I hadn't heard of just go find this gem.
My Dad and I used to watch this. The various detectives that are parachuted into the job are great plus the supporting cast are all excellent. Loved it. Recommend watching.
Father Brown
A priest, along with his friends, solves many murders and mysteries. It's set in the early 1950s, and each episode provides cosy mysteries.
It just dawned on me watching the latest season available in my country that I don't know what his first name is. So I decided he is James Brown 😁
We watch this show together as a family -- and we always anticipate Lady Felicia's scream!!!! Then we know there's been a body discovered and the mystery solving has begun! LOL
Black Books
One of my all time favorite sit-coms. It's unique and brilliant. Also, I believe all the episodes are on Youtube. If you like dry witty humor and like me, you're a big fan of Dylan Moran's stand-up comedy, then this is the series for you.
Tim is a standout especially the episode where he ingests "The Little Book of Calm"!
The part where he is walking around calming the dog and the car alarm always cracks me up.
Load More Replies...Doctor Who
I mean, this is just a classic. The old series is from the 60s but you can watch from the new series in 2005 and still have a good idea of the show.
Midsomer Murders
Did you know that Orlando Bloom got his first big break playing a villain in this show?
Father Ted
Brilliant actors, every episode is pee-in-your-pants funny. Classic songs such as My Lovely Horse as well 😆😆😆😆
I've discovered Ardal O'Hanlon on Taskmaster and he's hilarious -- will have to go back and try again to watch Father Ted!!!
It has been suggested that this show contributed to a catastrophic decline in young Irish men entering the seminary.
The Vicar Of Dibley
Lovely actors, lovely humour. The British training system for actors cannot be beaten.
Agatha Christie's Marple
Red Dwarf
Also, I strongly suspect that the robot's name - Kryton - is derived from an old 20th C play about an imperturbable butler - Crichton - name of the play "The Admirable Crichton".
Shetland
This should be higher up! It's so good! I'm so invested in Tosh and Perez and get so annoyed with blondie on the left! Very well done. Well worth watching!
The Spanish Princess
Poldark
Derry Girls
A must watch. Great show. As an American this is one of the few shows I have to watch with subtitles because the accents are strong.
Inspector Morse
Morse is a humbug, but the cases were good. Endeavor is a follow-up but is a pre-quel. It's interesting watch Endeavor after watching Morse.
A little dated now but still an excellent series and John Thaw perfectly cast.
Then there's "Lewis" - about his sidekick when HE gets to be Chief Inspector.
Absolutely Fabulous
Fawlty Towers
Not PC these days but so clever and funny. John Cleese at the top of his game.
It wouldn't be very PC due to the time period it was released but it's a brilliant comedy that will have you rolling.
Torchwood
Murdoch Mysteries
That's Canadian actually, set in Toronto in the late 1800- early 1900, really good police detective/inventor drama, also quite funny.
I've been trying to track down a copy of season 3 on dvd in my region for weeks!
Mr. Bean
Agreed. I grew up watching, but no one I know (who's seen it for the first time in adulthood) enjoys this humor ☹️

Good Omens
Inside No. 9
I binged on this recently! Short stories with a plot twist at the end or something to think about.
Taskmaster
Taskmaster is the most amazing game show ever. Also, the first 12 seasons are on Youtube which they posted for everyone to enjoy during the pandemic. Basic summary...get five celebrities to compete against each other by completing intricate/weird/funny tasks.
The blind scooter parking challenge is maybe one of the funniest tasks ever on this show! Every season is brilliant!!!
I only started watching in the 5th series I guess as I thought "oh celebrities game show, boring". Well, it's not a gameshow, or boring, it's absolutely hilarious and every episode leaves me wheezing with laughter. Really brilliant stuff by Alex Horne
Love this show, one of the few my whole family likes! I've also seen the NZ version and the Norway one, which were pretty good too.
Fleabag
The Great British Bake Off
So relaxing. Nice people baking and fun people judging. It's the best competition show out there because it's calm and happy.
Oh man, some of the things the judges say...Taken out of context, its sooooo naughty.
After Life
Very definitely worth the watch... It'll have you laughing and crying..so very well written
Foyle's War
I would watch this on repeat monthly. The actors are excellent in this show. Good stories and plot lines too.
Doc Martin
I finally watched this all the way through. Not a bad show, but not very deep and got a bit repetitive at the end.
Grantchester
New Tricks
This is a must see. Goes a bit off after Brian leaves. He's the one just to the right of Sandra. But the replacement detectives are good.
We are binging this one now. Sorta like Law and Order with a bit of The Odd Couple thrown in.
The characters in this are really good and well portrayed by the actors.
Scott & Bailey
So good! They are so dysfunctional in their personal lives but excellent investigators! Very well written!
Black Mirror
Skip Episode 1 of season one, then swing back around to catch it later. Trust me. Each episode stands on its own so it isn't necessary that u start with it. Some people won't watch any Moore episodes after starting with s1e1.
Merlin
Quite a different take on Merlin and Arthurian legend, I really liked it
Black Adder
Inspector Lewis
Builds the trifecta of Endeavour, Morse and now Lewis. Laurence Fox as Sgt Hathaway is excellent with a well crafted characterisation - and Kevin Whatley stays true to Lewis. Good series.
The A Word
Ripper Street
Shameless
Yes, Prime Minister
Medici
Despite straying from fact in places, I really liked this show. A little hard to untangle who was who at times as they jumped between past and present.
Would I Lie To You?
Any episode with James Acaster is a must-watch TV moment!!! The cabbages!!! LOL
And a mention for the excellent guests, see the cabbage episode and "Marie" confusing Lee Mack. Also any, absolutely any episode of this featuring Bob Mortimer.
Spaced
Misfits
Yes, that is Klaus with powers as a teenager in case you thought he looked familiar. Really cool show, great premise and quite unique at the time.
Sex Education
Coupling
That's what I would compare it to, imo. I enjoyed it. It ran from 2000-2004.
Load More Replies...Marcella

The Office
Traces
This is such a great series, the way the past intwined with the present.
Moone Boy
Young boy with an imaginary friend living with 3 (4?) older sisters set in the late 70s in Ireland. Life thru the eyes of a young boy. So funny and heartwarming.
I loved this show from the first episode!! Not many laugh out loud shows out there period. But Americans need a bit of help with the irish brogue and slang sometimes. Not enough of this was made and I will be forever sorry!
The End Of The F***ing World
A good watch. I get that it wouldn't be everyone's favorite but it's really good. Great acting and storytelling.
Time
Friday Night Dinner
Gentleman Jack
Based on the secret diaries of a real woman who lived her life despite all the difficulties being a lesbian presented. Busineswoman, lover, caretaker. Excellent actors! I hoped for a 3rd season, but it was not renewed, unfortunately. Watch on HBO.
Absolutely fabulous! It's the story of a woman making her way in a man's world. It tells of the difficulties she faces in love, and in business. Well worth a watch.
Motherland
Taboo
Great period piece with excellent casting, acting, sets and cinematography - and a twisting tale. Tom Hardy looks superb - hopefully Season 2 will be made.....
Oh this is so good, still waiting for the new series sadly, it's been way too long
The Bay
Peep Show
Top Gear
Any episode that involves them camping -- or towing caravans!!! Also, I love the episode where they complete a driving obstacle course INSIDE a grocery store!
Everything up until Season 22. One of my all time favorite shows.
Spooks
Gavin & Stacey
A lovely funny feel good comedy with some great lines!
Strike Back
Trust Me
The Hour
I really liked this show, but the new Australian show with a similar setting, The Newsreader was even better.
And Then There Were None
The Inbetweeners
Think...American Pie but British and in some cases...more realistic in terms of the awkwardness.
Cuckoo
I rewatched it recently and now I can't get past Jake Peralta being Cuckoo 😄 I looooove Greg Davies so I guess I'm biased
Still Game
"He who hingeth aboot gets hee haw" wonderful series, developed from a sketch show called Chewin the fat, which is also extremely funny.
Clarkson's Farm
I assume Clarkson got downvoted due to his...well being Clarkson. I would like to say however that the show is absolutely amazing.
The Grand Tour
Fresh Meat
A Discovery Of Witches
Gangs Of London
Humans
Crashing
The Missing
My Mad Fat Diary
I thought the point of this list was to give incent for the next british binge. Why only few shows are described? The list seems just a copy paste and serves no one, while some critical view could really help for the next pick. Also having the list filled with dozens of shows that anyone ever heard of BBC is already familiar with doesn't help either.
What about Count Arthur Strong???!!! One of THE BEST British shows ever!
The Detectorists and Mortimer and Whitehouse gone fishing, are also well worth a look for gentle humour in beautiful countryside settings.
