Just pause for a moment. This year, shoppers spent a record $9.12 billion on Black Friday and another record $11.3 billion on Cyber Monday, making it the biggest online shopping day in history. This almost irresistible urge to buy things is created by smart selling strategies that largely play on our fears of missing out (who doesn’t like a good deal now and then!).
So how do we find rational ground in this buying craze? How do we measure what things we need and what we don’t, what’s worth our money and what’s not?
Well, this Ask Reddit thread may have some answers. “What brand name is actually 100% worth spending more for?” someone asked and people started sharing the splurges that, according to them, were totally worth their money.

KitchenAid stand mixer. I’ve had mine for over 10 years now, use it at least once a week and takes a beating during Christmas time and it still works like a charm.
People that have older ones, passed down from parents/grandparents etc, yours ran so nicely for so long because of the all steel motor. Almost all of the models now have some plastic which burn out more quickly. As a professional baker who operates out of a licensed home kitchen, I've killed two motors in 8 years lol. This Christmas I'm finally paying for the pro line that has an all steel motor.

My 2015 MacBook Pro is 8 years old and still running fine. I just updated to OS 16 with no issues. My husband has gone through 4 laptops (HP, Toshiba, etc.) in that time.

Try and find a broken Dell Latitude or IBM T-series. There's some REALLY bad macbooks out there, even apple admits that. I am typing this on a macbook with a mac mini in front of me, an apple watch around my wrist, iphone in my pocket, another mac mini on my workbench and there's an iPad over there, but Apple is not a brand you can buy for the brand. Also they are consistently bad at some stuff. Like making good sounding mp3 players, or powerbanks that actually make sense. It's not a 'totally good' brand, at all.

Bought my MacBook Pro in 2012. I changed the hard drive to an SSD, and upgraded its RAM to the max it allowed and it works like new.

My air is 7 and still going strong. I've had Dell and Toshiba in the past but they have never lasted more than 3 years. I buy the ones with the highest spec, so they last longer, performance wise, even if it cost more. I use it for study, gaming, work and internet.

Apple computers aren't supported for that long so yea, they will work but you wont be able to update any software and eventually websites won't load properly but I can confirm the hardware lasts..
This is exactly my situation! I have a 2010 MacBookPro that I’ve put money into maintaining over the years, replaced just about every part it has, but it’s a workhorse that still performs great! If you have an older Mac and can’t update the OS, check out OpenCore Legacy Patcher - I’m on a 2010 running Monterey. I was replacing my Toshiba laptop computers about every two years before I spend the money on my MBP.

I have a Comaq Presario CQ57. It's 10 yrs old, has a new hard drive, and it's going great. You would have never guessed it was 10 yrs old... An it was cheap, too, only $200 something at Walmart..
I got my Macbook pro in 2016 when the new touchbar one came out. Within a couple of years, it started to have a host of problems. Battery wouldn't last more than 20 min, double typing keys, issues with ports and bluetooth...I mean, granted, I bought it for college and was probably pretty hard on it, but I did NOT like how incompatible it was with just about everything else. Don't think I'll get one again any time soon.
Agreed, I have a 2011 and a 2012 MacBook pro that I use for Dj work and they are bullet proof workhorses. They are not fancy but that have not failed me
I was a died in the wool Mac person until I purchased a MacBook Pro about a year ago. Very dependent on it for my nonprofit. Breaks down all the time. Hardware issues. Second time it has been sent back to the factory for repairs. Will just stop working and the screen goes black and won't boot back up the first time. This time cuts off at random and you loose whatever you were doing. Boots itself back up within a few minutes. All day long. Plus will not update the system. Getting hardware problem message. In the shop again. I have to have a fan device under it to keep it from overheating. Does really weird stuff when it gets too hot and slows down to a crawl. And don't even get me started about the one kind of port issue. I have a desktop from 2010 still running fine if it weren't for the cracked screen and storage is at max. Plus can't update the system. To old this time.
Mine's been playing games on me with some keyboard keys recently, but I use it A LOT. Best laptop I ever had.

You cannot compare a one-two thousand dollar laptop to a Walmart $399 HP. One is made to last and the other is made to be obsolete in a year.
I’d up this to Apple products in general, really. I know a lot of people think they’re just a status symbol and I don’t defend Apple blindly (I still facepalm when I remember that ridiculously expensive display stand), but basically every Apple device I’ve had has more than earned its price in my eyes.

I work in IT, here are some things about laptops and PC's in General. The average laptop is designed to work 3 - 4 years. The average desktop PC about 4 - 6 years. We have found that if you are buying a laptop if you spend $600 for it, it will last 6 months to a year. If you spend $1500 - $2000 if will probably make it the 4 years+. A desktop you can go a little cheaper abut it is still in the $1200 range for a good PC to last a long time. A quality SSD will last about 4 - 6 years without an issue, but dont treat them as a dump truck and fill them up completely. If you want your several year old PC to feel brand new, one of the best things you can do is if it has an old style hard drive upgrade it to an SSD. The nuke it (format and start over) and start over option is a good way to make an older PC feel faster, but doing so erases everything so make sure you have a good backup of your data before doing so. I will not be held responsible for you erasing those precious memories.

Best tablet I had was a Sony. It's about 15 years old and can still play games, email, internet on it. Only use it as an emergency backup now when the other two need charging but I wish I'd replaced it instead of getting other brands.

Not an apple fanboy, but I use all sorts of Macs from a 2009 Mac mini acting as a web server running non-stop for over 2 years without a problem to a 2022 MacBook pro and lots in between. I use 2 of the 2011 macbooks with Linux for various tasks and they're going strong (with maxed out ram and ssd) I've used many brands before, but all Samsungs, Toshibas and HP-s deteriorated badly in about 3 years. I'm sold on quality and totally see how it pays for itself on the long run.

If you buy a HP laptop you deserve everything you get. If your budget is between the £300-£500 mark go buy a second hand good brand or custom one and you'll be infinitely happier. Macbooks look pretty but unless you're punting up the £££ for the upgrades the basic models are basically performance potatoes for the money, and they'll always be outperformed by anything respectable on the PC side at an equivalent price.
That's why Pro, it will outlast almost everything if we're talking about hardware
Depends on what you do. I'm a draftsman and I won't go within 50 feet of anything Mac. I swear by my surface pro! Does all I need in the field and office and then some more.
Idk anything about Apple products (I boycott them), but you can't really judge PCs by make of the entire computer, since they're just the assembler (I build my own). They just put together parts from many different manufacturers - eg, motherboard, processor, ram, disk drives, power supply, case, coolers, graphics cards. That said, I always spend more for EVGA, Corsair, and Seagate components.
The issue is that then you have to use MacOS, which is only one tier above ChromeOS, the worst OS of all time.
1. Statement that MacOS is second worst OS would like some objective comparison. 2. You definitely can install windows on any macbook with intel processor (not sure about M1 ones).

I agree. I got mine in 2009 and finally had to replace it summer 2022, as the replacement battery (not an apple product) expanded and busted up my keyboard and hard drive. I ended up with a MacBook Air.

Well i mean their original problem was using toshiba and hp laptops in the first place.i have an msi laptop that hasnt had any problems and i have had it since 2013. Cant play my games anymore on it but it still functions well as a general workstation. Only thing i had to replace was the power supply (the brick not battery)

I got a Bosch set for my washer/dryer and so far they’ve outlasted 3 sets of my father-in-law’s LGs, Samsungs, and another one I don’t remember. People complain appliances don’t last as long as they used to, and while I don’t disagree, it’s often because they buy the cheap models.
My Frigidaire front loader and dryer set are 25 years old and still work like brand new (tip: never use the detergent drawer for anything, and always keep the door ajar between washes). Same with my whirlpool fridge (although I did have to replace the thermostat, $25 on Amazon and 15 minutes after watching the video on YouTube.
Stanley stainless steel vacuum/thermos bottles. I have one that holds a 12-cup pot of coffee that I bought at a neighbor’s estate sale 30 years ago and it was probably 20 years old then. It still works exactly as promised.
I did have trouble cleaning the coffee crud out of the bottom of it until I saw a Heloise Hint on this: Fill it about 1/3 full of hot tap water and drop in about 4 denture-cleaning tablets and let it sit overnight. You wouldn’t believe how clean it is after that treatment!

According to my wife, Feminine products that aren't name brand either don't function well or are extremely uncomfortable. Having a more comfortable time during that part of the month is far superior to using uncomfortable products to make it twice as bad. (Her words, not mine.)
To add: I'm 33 and been with my wife since we were in high school. I've purchased a lot of these products myself, even when I was first dating her. It's either being a paper or cardboard insert that is rough/uncomfortable or the cotton is just not safe and doesn't stay together as it should (as a few have stated here as well). Michelin is by far the best brand of tires in the world. They invented pretty much all the tech and innovations that are copied by the competition, and their products are not even expensive (all things considered). You won’t get a better quality for the price, guaranteed. But for some reason they suck at marketing and don’t have the recognition they deserve.
Pretty much anything made in America, Japan, or Germany is going to be better quality that all the Chinese c**p being sold on Amazon. Everything from kitchen knives to cars. Of course you'll pay a premium since they aren't made with slave labor.

TBH it used to be but quality is declining. So much that Bosch themselves introduced Bosch Pro to provide (for example) very good tools or appliances. But the brand is unfortunately not a quality guarantee anymore.

I'm surprised no one said Revereware. My parents had the same Revereware set from when they got married in 1961. My father gave us a set then my husband and I got married. Those pots and pans suffered a lot of abuse over the years. we finally gave them to a neighbor when we were limited on moving van space for our trip across the USA. She's still using them and they are 30 years old.
My mother got her Revere Ware in 1962. My sister buried one of the pots in the back yard after burning something in it, some time around 1972. Mom dug it up, and has probably cooked something in that pot in the past week. But here's a challenge: try to buy some brand new Revere Ware today.

Anything that gets absorbed into my skin. Specifically makeup and skin care products. There is definitely a difference between drugstore and higher end in performance and longevity. That being said, there are super expensive high end products that work just as well as their lower cost but higher end buddies. At some point you stop paying for quality and just pay for a name.

Buy what you'll use. I have a Vitamix that"s been collecting dust 10 of the 11 years I've owned it. On the other hand I still use my $40 Ninja Master Prep I get from the infomercial all the time. I got the Vitamix because I was attempting to upgrade. Don't get me wrong, the Vitamix is top notch and worth every penny if you actually use it!!!

Not a specific brand, but on cars, OEM parts, or parts made by the supplier to the OEM are better. I can't tell you how many times a customer has brought me some part off of eBay to save money that ended up costing them more when it failed within a few weeks. Even if the OEM parts is prone to failure, how likely is someone trying to make it even cheaper than them going to be able to make it anywhere near as good.

Of all the discussion on name brand stuff I'm gonna throw two things I buy generic that I think work better. The dollar store carpet cleaner and dollar store window cleaner. Don't know why but the I prefer the cheap versions over name brand. They just work so much better to me.

Load More Replies... I'm surprised no one said Revereware. My parents had the same Revereware set from when they got married in 1961. My father gave us a set then my husband and I got married. Those pots and pans suffered a lot of abuse over the years. we finally gave them to a neighbor when we were limited on moving van space for our trip across the USA. She's still using them and they are 30 years old.
My mother got her Revere Ware in 1962. My sister buried one of the pots in the back yard after burning something in it, some time around 1972. Mom dug it up, and has probably cooked something in that pot in the past week. But here's a challenge: try to buy some brand new Revere Ware today.

That being said, there are super expensive high end products that work just as well as their lower cost but higher end buddies. At some point you stop paying for quality and just pay for a name.
Braun, I had a hairdryer made by Braun that lasted for 40 years, it was a compact one, made for travelling.

In my family, Tefal’s really popular. We have pots, pans, knives and a lot more from there and my parents never complained and love it all. For the many pots and pans we only have 3 handles that can be put on any of them so we save space aswell.

Buy what you'll use. I have a Vitamix that"s been collecting dust 10 of the 11 years I've owned it. On the other hand I still use my $40 Ninja Master Prep I get from the infomercial all the time. I got the Vitamix because I was attempting to upgrade. Don't get me wrong, the Vitamix is top notch and worth every penny if you actually use it!!!

I can't tell you how many times a customer has brought me some part off of eBay to save money that ended up costing them more when it failed within a few weeks. Even if the OEM parts is prone to failure, how likely is someone trying to make it even cheaper than them going to be able to make it anywhere near as good.
Agree, Duluth Trading is great. Going on 10 years for a couple of undies. Still look and fit great. I have 4 pieces of Tupperware that are 50 years old. Still great. No stains, lids still good. Willing all of it to niece along with my corelle set with the huge popcorn bowl. I don't use anything but G2 for pens. T-Fal pans. You take care if them...they will last 40 years like mine have. REVERE WARE! -- the REAL copper bottom stuff. I have my mother’s pots and pans AND cooking utensils (ladle, hand crank whip) a wedding gift to herself before she had us kids. I STILL use them, NEVER lets me down. Cooked in them for my husband. I will never move anywhere without these pots and pans. (And they double as a weapon in a barroom fight!)
Pentel Twist Erase III Mechanical Pencil. I discovered them in college 30 years ago and I never went back. They will last forever if you treat them with just a tiny bit of respect. They have a huge eraser in them that is easy to use, the lead doesn't break all the damn time. I just love them.

Of all the discussion on name brand stuff I'm gonna throw two things I buy generic that I think work better. The dollar store carpet cleaner and dollar store window cleaner. Don't know why but the I prefer the cheap versions over name brand. They just work so much better to me.
