Life, as you perhaps know, is an unfair thing, but not everyone really agrees with this. Many people believe that accepting individual problems and inconveniences, taking them for granted, is a kind of social contract, enshrined in years of human silence.

Indeed, there are a huge number of strange things in our life that we just get used to and take them for granted. However, if you look at the situation from a different angle, certain facts, traditions, things or services will turn out to be simply ridiculous or even absurd. Or, let's call a spade a spade - a total scam.

There is a thread on Reddit whose authors collect opinions about the biggest scam in life that no one wants to admit. To date, the thread has already gained more than 52.1K upvotes and gathered around 36.8K comments. Some of the comments look pretty ridiculous too, but many of them just have a kernel of truth.

Bored Panda created a special curated list of the most popular comments for you, so feel free to scroll to the very end. You will definitely agree with something, object clearly to something, and by the way, we will be glad to read comments of both kinds - after all, truth, as you know, is born in disputes.

In Australia you can pay private health insurance to cover dental and optical. Although we can get eye checks at an optometric covered under Medicare and we have a school dental scheme. The school dental scheme is $1000 of dental care/treatment per child that is covered under Medicare. This doesn't include special dentists like orthodontists etc.

I got an abscess that got so bad a couple weeks ago that I went into sepsis it was a combination of waiting for my dental insurance to kick in, (started a new job) and being ignored by an ER doc who said he thought it was overkill to give me antibiotics because it was just a tooth ache, after looking in my mouth fo a second and not even feeling where I was swollen. That s h I t almost killed me, but because it was a dental issue, it wasn't taken seriously

you can get a price break if you go to the local dental/optometrist/chiropractic college & let students work on you. Good luck. Ask if they warranty their work first.

I used to agree with this statement. Recently I took a job selling health insurance. Y'all this industry is SO HEAVILY REGULATED by the government and lawyers! Anyway, get yourself an insurance agent who you can talk to and get to know you. There ARE PLANS that cover dental, vision. And hearing, but if you have an agent who doesn't know what they are selling, you won't get those policies. You need someone who cares about your situation and the way to do that is to get an actual person as your agent. They'll get to know you and your circumstances, and they will be able to understand your needs and can help you find a policy that works for you!

Try having something like TMJ where medical insurance says it's a dental issue, and dental insurance says it's medical issue. $5k in treatment and and neither of them will cover it. God bless this Great Nation. Heaven forbid we would have that crazy socialist healthcare. /snark off (this assumes you can even afford insurance which is a stretch). I had to give it up being self employed. 1 person, 50 y.o, no issues and it was $650 per month.

It's a broken fu**ing system and the only ones benefiting from it are rich a**holes and occasionally a patient in a clinical trial that has a good outcome from a new drug/treatment they would never be able to afford if they didn't offer themselves up as lab rats :(

Well a company could provide a policy that covers a person for everything that could possibly happen. Make it compulsory and then every person is covering for every other person's costs. Impractical I know - so insurance now covers major issues like health, house, contents, car, life, accident, pet, etc. And if everyone is covered and everyone subscribes it works, but someone says I have no teeth so why should I have to pay to cover other people's teeth (conveniently forgetting that they are contributing for your stroke medication or your kids broken leg treatment. So now you get policies that cover bits and pieces, and there are always borderline cases and grey areas that depend on legal interpretation of what is and is not included. So READ THE FINE PRINT!

Pick me for this one! We've all seen the commercials where they say that dental infections can go to your heart & kill you dead. Buying separate dental insurance is not only expensive, it often only covers a small part of the costs, if at all. Also, many dentists or dental staff have NO training in dental PTSD, which I have in spades. Because I don't climb the drapes when I have no choice but to see a dentist, they think I'm faking. Then I tell them my extensive dental history....needless to say, my teeth (what few I have left) are a mess.

Omg (hugs) I'm so sorry you are living with that! I too lived with crippling fear and horrible teeth for years (about 17 to be exact) until I couldn't take it anymore I knew if I didn't do something I would probably die. I researched dental implants and it was a life changer. I found an amazing place about and in one visit they pulled all my remaining top teeth and made a beautiful prosthetic that I wore home that day. I could eat finally eat/drink without any problems and very minor pain. They also let my husband stay back there with me and gave me a dose of anxiety meds. Some will even do it under conscious sedation where you don't even remember the procedure itself. Please keep looking good ones are out there!

Pretty common in Europe to have separate insurance for dental and vision. Don't see a problem with that. When you are young, vision and dental are rarely a problem so it's cheaper to pay the costs rather than the premiums. When you get older, the reverse is true, so not having it included saves money on premiums in the long run.

Don't give them any ideas - next thing you know we'll need separate insurance for each specialist. Chiropractor insurance, Orthopedic insurance, Cardiology insurance, et cetera. You know they'd do it they thought they could get away with it.

To be clear, not marriage but weddings specifically.

I’m happily married to my wife and we were content to do something special just the two of us, maybe spend a couple of grand and treat ourselves a little bit to something amazing.

Cue the families getting involved and before you know it we’re spending closer to twenty grand on one day and feeding a bunch of people I’ve not heard of before or since the wedding.

About a month after I bought plane tickets I got a message that they had to change my flights. My new return flight was a day later. I asked if they could change it back to the day prior as planned - these tickets were a good 9 months in advance so I know they had seats. They told me yea, they could change back - and the difference in ticket price is $750 please. I argued for a day and finally heard back sorry that was a mistake, it’s only $375 more. I said no - and they finally agreed to change my flight back to the original day free of (additional) charge.
