We were all taught as children that honesty is the best policy. Sometimes the truth hurts, but lying is much more harmful. So we do our best to be upfront and honest with everyone we meet, occasionally bending the truth to spare someone’s feelings. Until one day we realize just how many lies have been surrounding us our entire lives…
From misleading statements companies tell to gain their customers' trust to propaganda governments spread to keep their citizens in line, Reddit users have recently been sharing some of the biggest lies that have been told in human history. So enjoy reading through this list, pandas, and be sure to upvote the lies you’ve heard far too many times!

> …there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! The late, the great George Carlin.
George Carlin was the reality check I needed at an impressionable age...
He spoke about the reality of the world like no one else. He was the best!
Load More Replies...disgusting just how many people believe. Brand new war over in the middle east that all stems from who has the better imaginary friend two thousand years ago.
Israel and Palestine actually doesn't stem from that at all. It's politics. Politics over who gets the land. At the core of it it doesn't have anything to do with religion at all. People can try to drag religion into it all they want, with Zionism and Jewish faith and Islam and Islamic militism, but as you keep peeling back the layers, it all comes down to politics.
Load More Replies...The list is actually hundreds (like, over 600!) of things He wants you to do and not do.
Depends. The important things are the 10 commandments, and for Christianity, should be the teachings of Jesus. Unfortunately, they decided to add in many books and pages from purple other than from the individual who is supposed to be the room of good, and too many seem to pick and choose from the hateful sections, rather than actually following the teachings of Jesus. Similar issues in at least a few other religions, but Christianity is what I am most experienced with. This specific post in the list is referring to the 10 commandments.
Load More Replies...Nobody with any sense believes this anymore. Religion is simply a means to control people.
Look at how many wars were started and waged all for religion. I am spiritual, but no religion for me!
If God gave man free will then why is he telling people to create different religions and get as many people to join by force?
He isn't, free will is doing that, you can't have free will and then complain about what freedom to choose creates.

Vaccines cause autism. F**k those gullible idiots.
Anti-vax parents that refuse to immunise their children should be charged with murder if their child dies of a preventable disease - or if their child transmits a preventable disease to another who dies. No ifs and buts.
Yes, absolutely agree. *ALTHOUGH* I do want to remind people that there are some people who genuinely can't be vaccinated. And they shouldn't be lumped in with the antivaxxer losers.
Load More Replies...2021, I had two autism shots plus an autism booster and I feel great. An ex-friend of mine didn't and feels dead.
I've had 4 COVID autism shots so far on top of all my autism shots from when I was a wee lad! Still not on the spectrum though 🤔
Load More Replies...this whole theory is calling me out lmfao I got aspergers so i do have autism and i only found out after the vaccine but even im not stupid enough to believe it causes autism and even if? is that really such a bad thing? being autistic doesn't make you worthless
Yea. It's been determined to complete certainty that vaccines have nothing to do with someone being in the autism spectrum, but that when children are tested for autism, it is typically around the same age as a childhood vaccination series, so despite the fact that there is no relation, too many people are drawing a casual link between things that are simply correlational, with no actual casual link.

i am the person who puts the autism in the vaccines AMA
Is the process of extracting the autism juice from autistic people cruelty free?

"I acknowledge that I have read and agree to the above Terms and Conditions."
yeah and one of odd versions of this was back in the days when you bought software on a CD and you had to accept their business terms when they were presented on screen when you tried to install it for the first time. E.i. you pay first, then you read the business terms and conditions, so you can decide if you want to opt out AFTER you have paid for the product.
Load More Replies...Be careful, with this one! GameStation, a UK based software reseller, had embedded a clause in their terms and conditions that the user cedes legal ownership of his immortal soul to the company in 2010. According to their press release, 88% of users had no problem with this - or simply did not bother to read. Fortunately the company later issued an update nullifying the "soul clause". Those 12% who read this and explicitely opted out were rewarded with a bonus voucher for having read the T&C (source: https://bit-tech.net/news/gaming/pc/gamestation-we-own-your-soul/1/).
A train booking company tried to shaft me so I threw their own TV's at them, they tried a feeble but this clause so I said let's see how the ombudsmen see it. I'm being refunded, they're making policy more clear but once I get the money, the email exchange complete with policy screenshot goes to trading standards.
I actually scan most of these Terms and Conditions. But, I admit I'm wearing out, I may give it up. I'm just worried I might accidently be agreeing to something I don't want to happen. I did bail on one that was going to use my personal info in pretty much any way they wanted.
Tax cuts for the rich will benefit everyone.
Trickle down would work if the rich weren't so super absorbent that they suck.
No, it wouldn't. It's never been intended to work in the first place, just to APPEAR likely to work long enough to get it through parliament. Crawl-up-economics is what every longer boom that ever was has been founded upon. That way, it does work. The other way ... never even was intended to...
Load More Replies...Perfect example for debunking Trickledown "economics": money is like 💩. If you pile it up high in one place, all it does it stink. However if you spread it around nice and evenly, it causes everything to grow! 😁

America stands for freedom and liberty.
I don't think there is a decade in US history where there wasn't someone somewhere being cruelly oppressed by the US or by someone heavily supported (i.e. controlled) by the US.
Just ask Florida, where schoolchildren are now fighting for the freedom to...wait for it...READ.
I am a library TA (teacher assistant) in Florida. I feel this so much. Just this year, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Slaughterhouse 5 were banned by my school county and the librarians had to remove those classic books from our shelves. It is such bullcráp.

America is an experiment gone bad. I’m fairly convinced its end is near.
Your religion is the correct one. Lol the “main reason” why “most people” believe what they believe is because they were born into part of the world in which the religion is popular.
Or... you live long enough to witness some strange $hit. Too many people have a spiritual awakening then freak out and grab a "Holy" Book. Don't do that! Stop joining outdated belief systems. Look forward not backwards. We have freedom of Religion so we can escape Religions that cause division and strife.

I went to school with a chap who went to work and live in Utah. He doesn’t prescribe to any religion. He loves where he is but says he is under constant pressure to become a Mormon. He’s very polite and patient and always politely declines. I’m not - so I don’t think I’ll be emigrating to Utah any time soon.
Load More Replies...That's what has always bothered me about religion in general: the sheer arrogance in believing that after thousands of years of human existence and the uncountable number of philosophies and religions that humans have come up with to explain that which can never be adequately explained, that YOUR fairytale of choice is the only correct one. YOU DON'T KNOW THAT! No one does and no one ever will until the day they die and actually experience what, if anything, happens after. Believe what you want, that's your choice, but that doesn't make your belief irrefutably correct.
As a child I was forced to attend Baptist church with my parents. The hypocrisy was obvious to me even as a kid. Turned me off from religion since then.
You know what I don’t get? Many religious people often say “I’m ok with gay people but I don’t want them to rub their lifestyle in my face.” Then I turn around and suddenly abortion is banned and kids can’t read books with an author whose last name is “Gay” because the religious people are rubbing their lifestyles in Americans faces. Wtf lol
Load More Replies...I don't believe in organised religion. I do feel that there are things that can't be explained without the influence of some other entity.

Load More Replies...Back to the free will argument. If a religion tells you they are the correct one then they are not as they have steam rolled over your free will to force you to follow theirs

With a vast amount of luck dwarfing a high level of hard work you can have a chance of being whatever you want that might not sound too enticing but if you want something badly enough you can do things to increase your chances of achieving it. As a mixed race person I’ve heard a lot about skin colour causing a glass ceiling of what a (non white) person can achieve but I couldn’t disagree more m, you can go anywhere whether it’s a law office, a school or university, a hospital and see black people in high level roles, there’s been a black President and currently a black Vice President, if they could do it why can’t you?
Well, to a degree you can, you just can't be good at whatever you want to be

You don’t need a union. We will take care of you.
The union saved my life. Literally. I got cancer just after purchasing our first home. It was for an early mammogram that our insurance provided. Mammogram at 39. Found cancer just as it was starting. Didn’t have to pay anything over a $10 copay. Yes, I’m in the United States. The same country you could lose everything and just from attempting to treat an illness.
As part of the new-hire training process, Dollar General makes all employees watch a propaganda film they made about how "Unions are ineffective and only take your money." If they're so ineffective, why did you spend money writing and producing this video that you're paying me to watch? Out of concern for our best interests and the goodness of your hearts? How generous of you! Also, the line that, "all things can be resolved through HR," is hilarious because our "HR" is literally just a call center, probably outsourced to another country with more exploitable labor.
Heard that one before...........just before they stopped matching our 401k and increased health insurance premiums.
They left off the part of that statement that makes it true: as we see fit.

"Everything happens for a reason."
Also beautiful and wondrous and full of love. What we get is partly based on what we give out, but mostly just random. We are very good at finding reasons for things, and it helps us learn, accept and overcome. So, you know, not a terrible thing to believe :)
Load More Replies...Everything does happen for a reason. Sometimes that reason is water condensed around this particle of dust. Ice formed on this patch because of it so you hit a deer. Therefore, you spouse's new boots were ruined waiting for you after dance class. It wasn't because you are secretly resenting them.
I never believed that nonsense. That would require some guiding force in the universe and I don't believe something like that exists.
Perhaps, but a lot of times that reason is completely irrelevant, and in no way connected to your actions. Sometimes life just sucks, and things happens for no fault of yours or in such a way that it is not beneficial for you in any way. You are not the center of the world and hence those reasons won't always be related to you. Stuff just happens from time to time for completely random reasons.
Things may not happen for a reason... but an amazing part about human nature is that we generally have a good ability to see the silver lining in almost anything. Which can be a good coping/survival mechanism :)
It's ALL up to random chance. We are just a bunch of silly evolved apes on a tiny planet in a galaxy of billions of other planets, in a universe of billions of galaxies!

What if there was wmds...but they were made by a friendly country, like us maybe?
Not necessarily a lie, but people have the misconception that Europeans invented slavery in the 15th century. Slavery is something that has existed across the world, for millenia. And there were large scale slave trade networks established by other powers, such as the Trans Saharan slave trade established by the Islamic caliphate after their conquest of North Africa.
Whoever thinks that didn't have history classes? Everyone knows slavery was present in antiquity.
I was only ever taught that slaves we black and largely in the southern US. If there were ever any slaves of any kind anywhere else, I wasn’t told so much as a single syllable about it. When I was a teen, my folks told me our people had been slaves, too, and I was astounded.

While it is important to acknowledge this truth I think it is critical to simultaneously point out that this fact does NOT excuse the behavior. No matter where or when.
Yeah the bible even gives instructions on how you should treat your slaves, who can become your slave, and how to sell your family. So every "good christian" ought to know that slavery is a concept that goes at least 2000 years back.
While slavery has been around since, well it has never not existed, what changed over time between the 15th and 17th century was the creation a codification in the American Colonies of race-based Chattel Slavery. It is also unique in that it was created at a time when slavery and feudalism where beginning to end in Europe.
Yes, people. Race-based chattel slavery was a different game and the foundation of this nation's capitalism disease

"The customer is always right." I want to know who came up with that. They are wrong.
the full saying is actually the customer is always right in matters of taste
Actually not true. The original saying is just the short sentence. It was just never meant to be taken so literally, it was just a motto to convey a certain feeling to customers. In this age of entitlement, we need to retire the whole phrase.

THE CORRECT ANSWER. In 1909, American Business magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge, who gained his fortune with a retail store in London that garnered him the nickname “The Earl of Oxford Street,” coined the phrase, “The customer is always right.” The full quote is, “right or wrong; the customer is always right. Which was trained into his staff to never argue with customers.
Can't recall the full name of the person who coined the phrase, but her first name was definitely Karen.
Men are better than women.
Men and women are not equal in many places. But their rights should be equal and neither gender is inferior to the other in general. Both genders have what they are better at and what they are not as good at.
Except, as a blanket statement, even that can be false. Things men (or women) are "traditionally" better at they might not be. Men can be amazing caretakers. Women can do math, just like me, a rocket scientist. People are individuals and should, in my opinion, be treated as such.
Load More Replies...It's not valid for mental capabilities but there are some things women are better at and some things men are better at, otherwise the sexes would not be segregated in sports.
The good news is that women are absolutely equal to men. The bad news is that women are absolutely equal to men.
There are some jobs where size matters. Since, on average, men are larger than women, the type of work and the physical plant create a gender bias. My favourite example is high pressure welding. A weld made on the inside of a pressure vessel is stronger than a weld made on the outside. I know a number of people that always hire the smallest good welder they can find.
I've never heard anyone say or even think that. I think that you're confusing it with "women are vulnerable and need to be protected". Which is why fewer women work in dangerous industries.
I have heard it a lot as a woman. Consider that, as a man, you haven't been told it directly or it was masked as a 'joke'

The Banks are too Big to fail.
This makes me sick. LET THEM FAIL. No business should be free from the consequences of their bad decisions and unethical treatment of employees and customers.
Sadly, a lot of the times the people who'll suffer are not the banks or the high-profile customers but the small-scale ones who'll lose everything. That said: more rules for banking! They should have enough assets to cover huge losses so their customers won't lose everything.

“The Native Americans worked with the early settlers to create Thanksgiving”
History books are written by the winners. The subjugated peoples are rarely mentioned and if they are it is very sanitized.
Most of U.S. history, as taught to public schoolchildren, is claptrap. "Lies My Teacher Told Me" is an excellent source of actual history. The propaganda that is currently taught is just what the victors want told. In the U.S. that would be the victorious European colonists. British descendants simply continued what Spanish and Portuguese plunderers started. Thanksgiving, along with Columbus Day, is part of that propaganda.
That is SUCH a good book! Highly recommend this to anyone who hasn't read it

Fat makes you fat.
Not a total lie, just the way it was over/misrepresented for many years when the main cause of obesity is simply eating too much. Just as these days the focus on sugar means that so many products are replacing it with artificial sweeteners (which I personally find disgusting) instead of people simply eating less of it.
The idea that fat is bad was a direct result of the sugar industry's ad campaign many years ago. Why? Because when fats are removed from foods, sugar is added to improve the taste. And sugar is addictive, so the more you eat it the more you crave. Fats are necessarily for many bodily functions, including brain function.
Right! Fat goes in the brain and the bone marrow. Sugar and bread makes you fat. And beer...
Also that egg yolks have higher cholesterol. My grandparents have been telling me that for years and it's not as dangerous as they like to think.
Fat doesn't make you fat, but apparently it can clog your arteries at some point. (source: grandmother)
And it's highly caloric. Fat is not the enemy, but certainly must be monitored.
Load More Replies...It's a ... bit different. Any and every nutrient contributes to making you fat, if your intake exceeds your expenses. And the other way - you can reduce your intake of protein and carbs to next to nothing, but take in all energy you do in form of fat, but still lose weight due to intake being lower than expense, ... it's kinda irrelevant what kind of fuel, it's the energy content accessible to your body that counts.

"Capitalism isn't perfect, but it's the best system we've got." If that were true, how come we spend so much time worrying and paying people to [take out] and destabilize every democratically elected socialist government? The Military Industrial Complex is basically a money grab fueled by having to fight the right wing dictators we put into office, and making new weapons to compete with the ones that we sell to our enemies.

Caitalism is f*****g evil, if you can't see that you are part of the problem. The serving sizes on bags of chips.
They do this on unhealthy food so that they can make it look healthier. "Less than 5g of sugar per serving", etc, have no meaning when the "serving size" is two crumbs, but it entices people. This was a propaganda story started during WW2 to cover the use of radar and good intelligence. The coastal watchers of England were able to see the planes coming because of carrots, not because radar dishes could see them 30 miles away.
it was a pilot who had onboard radar for the first time and was shooting down many enemy aircraft (the powers that be said he had been eating carrots), obviously us Brits wanted to keep it secret so the carrot story came out...during WWII we also had a glut of carrots so in a bid to get people eating more carrots the story was put out effectively killing two birds with one stone

I was shocked at how good one company was. I was finishing a master's degree in 1981. Alcan interviewed me. When it became obvious that my French was not good enough for the location with the vacancy, the interviewers asked me how I would deal with a "hypothetical situation". When I answered, they asked a number of detailed questions. I was forced to switch to English to answer some of them. At the end of the interview, they said that they would like to hire me, but my French was not good enough. Two months later, I got a rejection letter and a cheque for $500 for consulting fees. My solution to the "hypothetical solution" worked.
"They are your enemy."
…. the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country. There is one group of people you should always beware of - people who think that they can pick your enemies for you.

That there isn’t enough resources for everyone.
There AREN'T enough resources for everyone if everyone wants to live at the current level of 1st world wastefulness.
This is true. It takes approximately 2 acres of land to feed 1 human for a year. This includes grazing area for 2 cows and room to grow, wheat, friuts and vegetables. There are only 15 billion acres of land suitable for cultivation on Earth. There are 8 billion people. We are already below the needed amount of surface space to feed everyone. Americans use 4 to 8 acres worth of food a year.
Yea... how about we get rid of the 2 cows since they are a mini methane factory that can easily be replaced with a few goats.

It takes 7 years to digest gum.
Not technically a lie, more, misinformation. At the time that this "myth" came about, it was actually merely suggested/estimated that it WOULD take around 7 years to for it to digest, as we do not have the right kind of enzymes to break it down efficiently. However, it would pass through your system before that would ever happen (usually within 2-3 days).

If the buildings, were designed and built in the same way, I would expect them to both act in the same way. As it was the subtle differences showed. The second tower to get hit, fell first. This is because the first tower was hit higher & more centrally, allowing the symmetrical shape of the building to resist the weight increase for longer. The second, hit off centre and a lower height causing more pressure to the core supports from the weight of the building above. Also, they did not 'implode perfectly from the bottom into their own footprint'; Huge amounts of the outer walls were forced outwards to around 500ft. That's what caused the damage to the neighbouring buildings and caused another to collapse under the weight of the rubble. Nothing to do with thermodynamics, but a lot to do with physics.
