Every photograph is an immortalized moment. Through the years, they become a time capsule of a bygone era, a reminder of how life was once.
The internet is rich in resources of noteworthy images from the past, and this subreddit is an excellent example. With over three million members, it has no shortage of pictures featuring landmark events and renowned figures, whether in monochrome or full color.
As part of Bored Panda’s recurring series of articles, we’ve compiled this best-of-all-time list for you to enjoy. Whether or not you’re a history buff, prepare to be fascinated and maybe even learn something new.

In 1969, When Black Americans Were Still Prevented From Swimming Alongside Whites, Mr.rogers Decided To Invite Officer Clemmons To Join Him And Cool His Feet In A Pool, Breaking A Well-Known Color Barrier
Mr. Rogers deserves to be cannonized. The man was a saint and is the person we should all aspire to be when we grow up
"Cannonized" sounds a bit harsh, maybe you meant "canonized"?
Load More Replies...Adopted 'half and half' girl here. No one told my adoptive white parents about that. It was a surprise that came out when I was about one year old, maybe two. I was nine years old in 1969, and I remember my dad taking me to the ymca to swim. Just me and him. 'Daddy and me time', I thought. The reason he did that didn't even occur to me until I was much older. My grandparents neighbors would not let me swim in their pool, saying they only allowed family. But they let my white sister swim in their pool. God bless my parents, especially my dad!
Wow. The idea that a child has to experience trauma when just trying to swim, of all things, is beyond heartbreaking. Im really glad you and your dad have such a good relationship!

I'm not religious, but I think of Mr.Rogers as a true saint. He was a pure soul that preached kindness, empathy and courage in the face of adversity. He never talked down to children, but instead tackled challenging topics like war, death, and racism with him. Francois Clemmens is also a gay man, which was also sadly frowned upon back then and could even be punishable. Francois has remarked that Mr. Rogers was almost like a father figure to him.
Mr. Rogers along side so many other men and women was amazing and an inspiration
Of course, this was super cool and I don't want to take anything away from it or what Mr. Roger's stood for and has done over the decades, but I wonder what it was like for Clemmons. Was he afraid, did he get targeted for this, and how badly? It is absolutely wild that such an innocent action as resting one's feet in water next to another person's could can ever taken the courage of a hero.
This picture is even more poignant when you realize it was taken in 1993 as part of "Officer" Clemmons' last day on the show. An actor named Francois Clemmons, he played the role for 25 years (1968-1993). They reenacted the famous scene shown in this clip from the movie, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" (2018): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6O_Ep9bY0U
Never saw any of his stuff, too young, but I keep reading about him and I wonder how a country could be so divided when there were people like him on TV.
Racism. The colour barrier describes how black people were prevented, barred, from doing things white people took for granted. At the time this happened (1969), black kids in America were fighting to just be able to swim in the same pools as white kids. Mr. Rogers inviting a black police officer (he was an actor, he played the role for 25 years) to not only share his towel but cool his feet right next to his own in a kiddie pool, spoke volumes. Short clip from the documentary explains it well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6O_Ep9bY0U

There was some kind of exhibit showing these dresses. My mother grew up in the depression. They had enough money for clothes but her her underwear was from the flour bags.
My grandmother wore clothes made of potato sacks when she was a kid
The *Sunbonnet Sue* logo washed out. There were a lot of clothes and curtains made from these. Grandma got chicken feed in such sacks. The poor guy in the photo had to move a lot of sacks until the buyer had enough of one pattern for her projects.
I remember my mom making me school dresses from flour sacks back in the 60s.
I remember those dresses, too. Every year before school started, Mama would have us look through the Sears catalog and have us point out the dresses and blouses that we wanted. She would then use those flour (and cornmeal) sacks to make our clothes. She never needed a pattern. She taught us all to sew, and I have made some things without a pattern, but I have to admit that I prefer one.

Since we’re on the subject of historical photos, one that stands out is the ‘Lunch Atop A Skyscraper.’ For the uninitiated, it shows a row of 11 construction workers enjoying lunch seated on a steel beam 850 feet above the streets of Manhattan.
The photograph was taken on September 20th, 1932. According to Smithsonian Mag, it was a publicity stunt to create a buzz for the imminent completion of what turned out to be the Rockefeller Center. And yes, it is all real.

At that same event at Lincoln, Einstein said; “There is separation of colored people from white people in the United States, That separation is not a disease of colored people. It is a disease of white people. I do not intend to be quiet about it.” Einstein was a strong supporter of Civil Rights, as a Jew who fled the Nazis, he saw parallels in historic treatment of Jews in Europe with Blacks in America; "Being a Jew myself, perhaps I can understand and empathize with how black people feel as victims of discrimination,"

Load More Replies...This picture is important and groundbreaking, but it wasn't her first visit nor picture with an AIDS patient. That was in 1987 when she officially opened the first UK AIDS clinic in London. Twelve beds which should have been full, sat empty when the media arrived. None of the patients wanted to be photographed, they were so angry with the way the media had been portraying them. Finally, with his back to the camera, an unnamed AIDS patient agreed to meet her. It's not as flashy as the picture above (taken in 1991 at Toronto's AIDS hospice, Casey House), but it shows how she knew she wasn't in danger years before. Alas, most people got their news from the MSM and they vilified gays for much longer than they should have. They knew it couldn't be shared via a handshake. But you get better ratings when you frighten people with fallacies. Sound familiar? Princess-D...ff-png.jpg
Diana was a great humanitarian. But people who aren't old enough don't realize that by 1991, it was well known that merely shaking hands with an HIV-positivo person would not cause someone to contract the disease. The real hysteria in the beginning was about saliva. People worried that performing CPR could cause them to get HIV,, for example.
Princess Diana did so much to help end the stigma around AIDs. She was a true humanitarian and should be remembered for her empathy and kindness towards people who were often judged and met with hatred back then.
imagine if the first person you got to touch after not being able to touch people for months was princess Diana 👀
Meet The "Night Witches", Fearless Russian Female Pilots Who Bombed Nazis By Night, 1941
Those women were sent out in outdated crop dusters to perform nighttime harassment bombings on German troops. They would kill their engines on final approach to glide silently and drop their bombs. They were the first stealth bombers. They would run in 12hr shifts. Some of them would do seven or eight bombing runs a night. All night, every night just to make sure the Germans would never get a good night's sleep. It was effective as hell.
Not so silent, they would make a slight whistling sound which lead the Germans to give them the nickname Nacht Hexen, or Night Witches.Their planes were so slow, that to out manoeuvre the Luftwaffe planes that were bearing down on them was to turn. The Luftwaffe would go shooting on, unable to turn that quickly. By the time they could turn and come back, so much sky was put between them that they were almost impossible to find. These squadrons were some of the most highly decorated of the War, with a couple pilots, including, Lieutenant Natalya Fedorovna Meklin, receiving the accolade Hero of the Soviet Union.

They say a photo is worth a thousand words and this one elicits so many emotions. There's a mixture of grief, relief, and pure joy in their eyes. I cannot imagine the sheer terror they must have originally felt believing they would be traveling to a horrible death. The great relief they must have felt to be set free was likely mixed with the grief if knowing that some of their other friends, family, and colleagues may not have been so lucky.
Just a few months ago my youngest said they were learning about WWII and I asked if she had learned about the camps. When she said she hadn't, I immediately taught her about the evils of Hitler, Nazis, and the camps. I didn't want it to be too shocking at first, so I showed her the part in Band of Brothers when they found one. It's hard as a parent to make your kids watch things that make them as upset as it did, but I explained to her as much as it hurts to show her, it's more important to for her to know and see what happened. I plan on watching the Anne Franks movie that Disney made for tv in the 90s (I have it on dvd). The earliest documented case was March 1918 in the state of Kansas in the United States, with further cases recorded in France, Germany and the United Kingdom in April. Two years later, nearly a third of the global population, or an estimated 500 million people, had been infected in four successive waves. Estimates of deaths range from 17 million to 50 million,[6] and possibly as high as 100 million,[7] making it one of the deadliest pandemics in history.

A Man Guards His Family From The Cannibals During The Madras Famine Of 1877 At The Time Of British Raj, India
I'd call it "sickening" - India produced more than enough food to feed its population, but the British authorities decided that businesses making money from exporting food was more important than keeping Indians alive. Just as bad was that the then-famine commissoner for India, Richard Temple, had previously been criticised for excessive spending during a previous famine in 1873-74, so severely restricted famine relief in 1876-78. These policies caused around 8 million extra deaths in that time.

It's never that simple. Imperialism is generally the problem. The Japanese empire wasn't kind to its non-Japanese subjects. British Soldiers (Interrupted During Drag Show Rehearsals By A German Raid) Manning A Bl 6-Inch Mk Vii Naval Gun At Shornemead Fort, England In 1940
During WW2 soldiers would put on performances, but since women were not allowed for the events, they used Men in the womens roles, however they tended to be more mocking or satirical roles. They did the same with Minstrel (Black Face) performances as well. People should understand the context of those performances.
Just curious, where's your backup for that? I'd really like to read about the performances and the preparation involved. I see matching outfits, not something slapped together to achieve a "mocking or satirical" part.

Just to clarify somebody said statistically more officers were killed than general soldier in WW1. The men who died were not statistics they were husbands, brothers and sons mainly. According to a scientific paper published in the Economic & Human Biology Journal dated April 2023, 101216. The paper was called Surviving the Deluge ..... Killed, die dog injuries or died of other causes in all Theatres of war Officers 33,337, other ranks 540,170. So statistically more officers died but more lower ranks of men actually died.

...which is more or less how it seemed when you visited the east coming from the west. The first thing you noticed was the subdued grey. Which was, of course, perception bias, helped along by the fact that the 80s in Western Germany were a time of extremely bold and loud colors.
Load More Replies...I remember this vividly. It happened in the middle of the afternoon here on the West Coast of the U.S. Just before the initial breach of the Brandenburg Gate, tensions were high. I wasn't sure if the soldiers would start shooting. Then the gate opened and it felt like the world was suddenly a little better.
I visited East Berlin in 1987, I was a gung ho teenage communist, until that day. It was drab and grey. We ate at what was a "fancy" restaurant. The beer was watered down, the food bland, the toilet paper was terrifying ( I kept a piece, it had chunks of wood pulp in it), the people we encountered showed no emotion. It was especially enlightening to learn that we were in a "showcase" area that supposedly had the best of the best.
And now...many in the west, especially on college campuses, want to bring Communism back, because they are blind to history.

Fun fact - there's so much granite, it's more radioactive than the average nuclear power station puts out.
You might wanna add that it's not the space itself that is radioactive and spread unnecessary fear. Taken from Quota: "Grand Central Station is not more radioactive than a nuclear power plant. The granite that Grand Central Station is made of is radioactive, but not as radioactive as a nuclear reactor. However, people who walk through Grand Central Station receive more radiation exposure than people who live next to a nuclear power plant. That is because the granite in Grand Central Station is not shielded and people can be very close to it. The radioactive material at a nuclear reactor is well shielded and people are kept far away from it. In either case, don’t worry about going to Grand Central Station or living next to a nuclear power plant. The dose rates are too low for any harmful effects"

There were several photographers there that day as it was an organized photo shoot, which has led to an unresolved debate as to who actually took the iconic photo. Ebbets is considered to the be the most likely, though. Also, the iconic photo was staged. Also, there was a floor not too far below them you don't see. Also, it's not the Empire State Building, as that can be clearly seen in the background.

Wow... New fear unlocked. The irony involved in the concept of falling to your death from the deck of your ship as it pulls into your home harbor after the war is pretty bitter.

How in the name of Beelzebub did they get a VW Beetle up there?? Those things couldn't drive in a straight line at the best of times...
No, my Beetle was fabulous in the snow. With the engine over the drive wheels it was great in snow; even more so with chains.

While these were lovely, most of them have been on here before multiple times. Any chance there are other photos that could be featured?
This is a "best of all time" post, so it's all repeats.

It was very long but I was fascinated and could not stop looking. Amazing!
I'm pretty disgusted. All these curiosity-inducing photos celebrate mostly positive and notable events EXCEPT for 4 random posts on Muslim women that seem to invite hating on Muslims, which every post has plenty of comments doing just that. Some racism is not only acceptable, but encouraged still.
