30 Hidden Film Gems That More People Ought To Know About As Shared By People Online
Maybe it’s just our bizarre fascination with all things underdog, but when a movie is popular and then there is that one dude who disagrees, it doesn’t have as strong of an effect as would it have vice versa—if a given movie is not that popular and there’s that one dude who loves and praises it.
Well, the voices of such people were heard in a recent AskReddit post by u/Starzz_1, who asked the lovely Reddit community what’s a movie they love that is unpopular or unknown by most people?
While the post itself got some modest love with nearly 3,000 upvotes, over 5,100 people voiced their opinions on movies that they think are awesome, despite not having done well in terms of popularity (for whatever reason, not necessarily because they weren’t all that good).
Bored Panda has compiled a list of some of the best answers that you can find below. Vote and comment on the ones you love, and why not let us know some movies that you loved, despite their mediocre popularity. If anything, check out the list for some movie recommendations!

It's not unknown, but The Emperor's New Groove is a really slept on Disney movie. Still to this day is one of the funniest animated movies ever made, IMO.
Another bonder for my family...Patrick Warburton is one of the funniest Disney characters ever and his pairing with Eartha Kitt is why sometimes Disney gets it so right... 'Pull the lever CRONK!!!.... Wrong lever!!!'
I LOVED this movie! I don't remember all the particular details, but my Mom and I went to the movies to see this, and we laughed all the way through it! Now I want to see it again.
Gattaca. Hardly anyone I know has seen it. Ethan Hawke is superb and I love the film noir/sci fi style of the movie.
It's a very well done movie - sci-fi that is rooted in plausibility so becomes uncomfortable as an actual possible future instead of just a fantastical imagined world.
Never mind Michael Nyman's astonishingly great score.
Load More Replies..."Hardly anyone I know has seen it"... Where are you from? It's part of the school curriculum in France (or used to be).
I had never even heard of it. And I love Ethan Hawke's acting.
Load More Replies...Excellent movie and it also spawned a classic Homer Simpson line in a classic Simpson's episode, the one that spoofed "Run, Lola. Run", which should also be on this list (I am only at 4 if RLR is already listed). Homer: " Reattach a thumb, Marge?! That is not possible! We are not in Gattaca!!" Oh Homer, you are THE MAN!
I love this movie. I think Alan Arkin's usual ham bone, screaming every syllable acting kind of ruined it but that's just me. UmA Thurman, as usual, was gorgeous
I vaguely remember watching this film in high school - did you guys have Friday movie days in high school?
I watched it in two of my high school science classes (same teacher). First three years of high school some teachers would show movies on occasion. That science teacher would also plan his lessons out to have a few days off for either a movie or we would play mortal kombat. Last year of high school our principal said no more movies. It didn’t really bother me though, my last year of school I only spent about three hours a day at the actual school.
Load More Replies...Loved Gattica - but don't know how I could get every hair off me - I have cats!
Since the director (Donner) passed and I saw it mentioned a couple of times with him I’ll go with Ladyhawke. Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and pre-Ferris Bueller Matthew Broderick.
All set to 80's electro/synth music... its mad... I had the biggest crush on Rutger Hauer...
I was more interested in Matthew Broderick.
Load More Replies...Great movie about a cursed couple. She is a hawk by day, human by night and he is a human by day, wolf at night. Even though they are always together, they are also always apart.
Love the scene where they "step in" in the church
Load More Replies..."I talk to God all the time, and He never mentioned you..." I have used that line a few times.
I learned about Ladyhawke from Ready Player One, though I haven't seen it yet. Love that book.
Idiocracy. One of the funniest movies I’ve seen also terry cruise was in there
i would say it predicted the moronic populace that could elect such a disaster as trump. President Camacho is awesome and I would totally vote for him, because in the end, after all, President Camacho would still acknowledge the facts in front of his eyes, as well as be willing to step aside for a more intelligent and able minded person to replace him.
Load More Replies...When this came out, I hated it. I now appreciate it as great social satire.
Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. A surprising amount of people I’ve met have never heard of it even.
First no.... definite no... Find the 80's BBC TV series if you want something that actually resembles the books...You'll be glad you did...
Strong agree... had forgotten it's already 15+ years ago that I sat through this in the cinema and at the credits wondered "Why stop now, when I'm hating it so much? Why not torture me longer?".
Load More Replies...So many fans hate it, but I loved it. It was not the radio series, not the tv series, not the books, but I still really enjoyed it. And now I’m crying because I wish Douglas Adams was still alive.
I liked it. I get the people complaining that the books or the original series are better but the movie is still enjoyable on its own. Besides if it weren't for this movie I would have never known about the books and I love them
This version is almost - but not quite - exactly as bad as Vogon poetry.
The show is much better. But if you want to see the movie, if you have read the books, forget them, and then it is a good film.
I thought it was alright, nothing amazing but I did not hate it, I feel I may have had a stronger reaction if I had read the book before hand. Most of the people that I know that did not like it was because they had higher expectations coming from reading the book that was apparently a lot better.
The problem, I think, is that there's a certain type of written humor that's very hard to translate onto screen. Well - the TV-series did better, apparently, but they had a lot more time to set everything up.
Load More Replies...That movie is ok considered on its own, but really underwhelming as an adaptation of the books
In Bruges, it’s an amazing film great acting everything builds on the story and means something.
I loved it so much I went to Bruges to find all the buildings in the film.
I'm sorry I called you an inanimate object. I was upset.
Load More Replies...I love this film. (Colin Farrell is sex on toast for me but so sad in this!) I want to go there so bad. My husband was there years ago with an old gf. He said it was the most beautiful city he's ever been to. We live in the states so maybe the next time we visit europe...if we ever do...
That one was weird. Not sure if I would say a must-watch but it was okay. My brother loves it, though.
Holy Sh*t .... another one... amazing actors... the guy that gets shot in the eye... the little guy in the school uniform... and Brendan Gleeson's death being one of the saddest and most grotesque scenes ever.... Two thumbs up....
I think there may have been one or two plot lines you didn't spoil...

The Cube.
It's a 1997 Canadian horror film directed by Vincenzo Natali. It's nightmare fuel psychological horror about 5 people who woke up in a giant complex from which they have to escape.
Highly recommend it.
Evolution. Its dumb but has some great comedic lines.
"Don't let them take my leg!" "It's heading for his crotch." "Take the leg! Take the leg!!!!!"
I still hear this song in the exact way that Seann William Scott sings it...I don't know if I've ever heard the actual song - I sing it this way to my partner when they're feeling down!

i got to see this as a sneak preview in a theater before it officially came out. it was packed and everyone had a blast. great experience and awesome movie! funny. every. time.
One of my Top Ten, quite possibly top 5 even. And just look at how much weight Ethan Suplee has lost since.
He looks like an absolute tank now! Fair play to him! Proof that the hard work pays off.

Benny and Joon. It’s my favourite movie. It’s got a very young Johnny depp as the lead role. He falls in love with a mentally ill girl names joon who is taken care of by her older brother Benny. He bends over backwards for her and makes her laugh with his silly antics. He plays kind of a young Charlie Chaplin role.
I think this post misses the fact that Johnny Depp's character is also mentally ill; and if not mentally ill, then on the spectrum.
I think Sam (Johnny Depp's character) was emulating Buster Keaton, not Charlie Chaplin, if I remember it rightly.
It was both. The bread roll feet thing was Chaplin for example. He's an amalgam of the two (maybe a couple others of the day; Harold Lloyd, Jacques Tati fir example)

The Burbs, it has so many good quotes and it’s sad when no one ever knows what I’m talking about.
"Oh no! You guys can't leave. This is the best part. I called the pizza dude!!"
Frankly, it just confirmed everything I ever suspected about those tidy, cookie-cutter areas
This may not be unknown enough to qualify, but Terry Gilliam's "Time Bandits" - incredible cast and just an all-around great Gilliam fantasy, especially for anyone interested in world history.
I really, really wanted Terry Gilliam to do a Terry Pratchett adaptation.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It always makes me want to travel and live a little deeper.
I really liked this movie and the message it conveyed. Beautiful cinematography also.
I liked this one. I have never seen the 1947 version or read the book, but plan on doing both.
As a photographer, that scene where he and Sean Penn were shooting the snow leopard and Sean says "If I like a moment, I mean me, personally, I don't like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it. Right there...right here" really hit home for me.
I'm noticing more and more that people "experience" reality while looking through their tiny phone screen, watching the recording of it. It's so bizarre to me.
Load More Replies...I loved this movie. Inspirational. Mysterious. The movie made me want to visit Iceland, and made me realize that my life is unadventurous and predictable and dull. So much wasted time. I will feel better once I make it to Iceland. Now, to double my income so that I can afford to visit Iceland for awhile.
My hat's off to Ben Stiller. He did a remake of a very popular movie with a very popular star, Danny Kaye. His remake was so much better than the original movie. That is super rare and gutsy.
It's not so much a remake, as a sequel. There is the same basic outline but nothing else.

Chronicles of Riddick. I dont fully understand why i love it as much as i do. But the movie has some of the best/cheesiest/funniest 1 liners ive ever heard. While also just being very entertaining. I liked Pitch Black before it also has some classic 1 liners. And Riddick after was a failed attempt at combining both movies before it.
Pitch Black.... the original and the best.... When Vin Diesel was a nobody.... filmed in the outback of Coober Pedy, Australia (hence the really bad bit part actor accents....seriously how much did they need to pay Keith David)
Love this movie. Grand space opera with some hilarious dialog and everyone put their hearts into it. Except SPOILER for a final stupid choice to fridge the girl... God that ruined the end!
I hear you... but I liked that they offed her.... thought it was a good ending and very glad they didn't crowbar in a romance of any description...
Load More Replies...Surely this isn't hidden, I thought everyone had seen this, it's fantastic!
The whole Riddick series is awesome. I love this one but I want a conclusion...
I love the trilogy including the animated one. I even have a signed poster of one of the cgi animators that recently passed away. I´ve heard there are more but I tried watching it and honestly got lost.

The 13th Warrior. It got bad reviews, but I think it’s a fun movie to watch.
BlacksmithNZ responded:
Great movie, and there are a few memorable scenes.
One that blew me away was Antonio character who is smart but can't speak the language of the other 12. From memory, the Vikings are not translated.. as somebody watching the movie you are like the 13th and not understanding what they are saying.
He tags along on a longish journey just listening to the others chat, swear and abuse him. Then he suddenly swears back as he has figured out enough of the language. At that point the all the characters speak the same language.
I can't think of another movie that dealt with characters not understanding other characters language like this.
Lo there do I see my father; Lo there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers; Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them In the halls of Valhalla. Where the brave may live forever.
I also loved " For all we ought to have thought, and have not thought; all we ought to have said, and have not said; all we ought to have done, and have not done; I pray thee God for forgiveness."
Load More Replies...My brother and I first super- bonded over this and then when I met my husband he fell in love with it too... so many fave lines... 'The dog can jump'.. 'I listened'... 'IT'S HONEY!!!' ....Oh... too many to mention... one of our absolute fave films watched over and over.. and you owe it to yourself to see the amazing Vladimir Kulich (or Ulfric Stormcloak to Elder Scrolls nerds) as the chieftain Buliwyf. No shade to Henry Cavill, but would love to have seen Vladimir as Geralt in The Witcher....
I love Henry Cavill as Witcher...but when they announced it I was like hell no, Vladimir Kulich should play Witcher :)
Load More Replies...The original text written by Ahmad ibn Fadlan was almost unreadable (it was dry, unemotional, and when he returned to his country it was seen as BS - ibn Fadlan tended to make stuff with much creative license even before he left) so Crichton did a good job getting a coherent story out of it. The movie was OK but left me with a massive crush on Dennis Storhøi, (he played Herger the Joyous) Also interesting that his real-life wife played the maiden they put on the ship to be burnt up on the funeral pyre ship of the newly dead King. ..guess you can tell I've watched it a few times :D
It is a great movie if you allow it to be the fantasy that it is and forgive obvious historical errors. Based on a Michael Crichton novel (who also wrote, among many others, Jurassic Park), lots of mythology and writings by the real Ahmad ibn Fadlan (Antonio Banderas' character).
I forgot to mention Michael Crichton and the history, yeah you just gotta enjoy the film non historically, but the novella was good to read...'Eaters of the Dead'
Load More Replies...This is a fantastic movie and book adaptation. It goes against many stereotypes and changes what you think is going to be a sc-fi horror flick into a great story that allows both the major and minor characters to develop. Although the villains, which are a bit 1-deminsional, the main ones show depth, competence, and adaptability.
This made a lot of sense about picking up the language. The Norse were not discussing philosophy or history, they traded, plundered, fought and reproduced. Didn't need many words past this. And, yes, the movie is dark, dismal and incredibly interesting.
"If you die, can I have that for my daughter?" Lol. I loved Denis storhoi in this.
Very underrated, IMO. It had production glitches, IIRC, but it is FUN. Just FUN. And good quotable quips, my favorite exchange being: "Bet on him if you like"... "I may!"...
Moulin Rouge. Everyone that I ask to watch it with me says it’s weird as hell and too zany to follow. But I love it! Songs and all!
In my opinion this movie was actually wildly overrated. Not bad but people FREAKED OUT about it when it came out and when I finally saw it I was like... *shrug*
I LOVED this movie when I saw it, just went nuts for it! Still love it! But I don't insist that you feel the same, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.
Load More Replies...Few people know moulin Rouge??? Don't think so.. it's just that it's a musical and people hesitate to see it
I'm guessing now the hype died down (because it was EVERYWHERE) nobody recommends it to the next viewers, because it's... not very good. So every day fewer people know it.
Load More Replies...I'm not a fan of Nicole Kidman. I haven't seen a movie that she has been in that I liked. I find she's overrated...
I managed 20 minutes of this film and had to shut it off. it was awful.
Better Off Dead. An 80s teen comedy staring John Cusack in which he repeatedly tries to commit suicide (humorously), has cartoon/claymation animated hallucinations set to Van Halen, has to win a ski competition to woo his ex, and is relentlessly stalked by a young paperboy over 2 dollars. It’s incredibly goofy and one of my favorite 80s movies of all time.
And there is also a pop-punk band named after the protagonist that has clips from the movie in most of their songs.
"Truly a sight to behold. A man beaten. The once-great champ, now, a study in moppishness."
Which is worse, never learning English, or learning it by listening to Howard Cosell?
Load More Replies...If you liked Better Off Dead, watch One Crazy Summer, another Screamin' Steve Savage film starring John Cusack.
My family must have really eclectic tastes because I know and love so many of these :-D. This is a bizarre and hilarious pure 80s comedy that my entire family quotes from. "Gee, I'm real sorry your mom blew up, Ricky." "I want my two dollars!" "Here's what you do: go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way... turn."
"Man! Now that's a real shame when folks be throwin' away a perfectly good white boy like that."

Not sure how much this counts, but The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Great comedy/spy movie that did surprisingly poorly in theaters. Definitely recommend a watch.
I LOVE that film. I’ve watched it so many times. Wish there was a 2nd

Such a fun movie. Great characters, amazing soundtrack, just fun. I have recommended this to so many people since it came out, and every single one of them has liked or loved it.
It’s not a movie but it’s a show called Farscape. I’m born in 96 so I’m not sure how popular Farscape was back in the day, but.. I loved that s@#t.
Frell Yes! This series was amazing. Only dumb yotz's disliked this gem Australia gave us.
Guardians of the Galaxy was a total ripoff! Starlord even wears the same style jacket as Crichton, they're both smart aleck Americans, teamed with a tough warrior chick, burly alpha warrior, plant-based alien, diminutive comic relief. GotG is fun, but every time I watch those guys it makes me nostalgic for Farscape.
Well, maybe. But then again, smart-aleck Americans teamed with tough warrier-chicks and burly alpha-worriors is a kind of a theme with SciFi-shows. But I agree that Farscape is better than GotG, as it has more details. Still enjoyed GatG (because Rocket!)
Load More Replies...It broke my heart when Far scape ended. The cast was so perfect, felt like I was losing close friends. Even Jool and the crazy old lady.
Wore an IASA shirt on a date with this girl... She asked me if I knew what it means (she was a huge fan of the shows unbeknownst to me) ? Do you ever heard of Farscape I answered ? Looked at me and said: You sir, are a real nerd ! Which I took as a compliment of course. Got engaged to that same girl two weeks ago lol
The Rocketeer, simply fantastic superhero movie from the early 90's.
Excellent movie. Jennifer Connolly, Timothy Dalton, great family friendly action film. Had a great stylized comic book feel
I saw it in the theater. I drove over an hour to go see it by myself. I have since shown it to many a friend, multiple times. It is still a favorite!

Train to Busan. People refuse to watch it because of subtitles.
People who refuse to watch subtitles miss out on some really great movies, IMO.
Subtitles helped improve my English skills, actually. So, it's a double win!
Load More Replies...I don't know where you live but from my point of view it have been a very largely watched movie.
Honestly, I didn't consider watching a lot of the K-Drama's on Netflix, not because subtitles since I don't mind them (heck, half the time I put them on english shows just to help me focus lol) , I just didn't consider it, omg some of them are so good, currently I'm watching "Stranger" and it has me hooked. So refusing to watch things in another language? You're only missing out.
I wish there was a 3rd season for Stranger, it is so good. I think the NYTimes put the 1st season in the top 10 of best series in 2017 (but there are too many awful rom com Kdramas, ugh)

Bong Joon Ho: "Once you overcome the one inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films"
Reign of Fire is the t@#s and I never hear it talked about.
OH, I was so disappointed at the final movie when it came out. It was originally supposed to take place during WWII. The Nazis were drilling into the Earth to tap the Earth's Core for power, and inadvertently awakened the hibernating dragons. So the World had to join together to fight them, while the Nazis were trying to figure out how to control the dragons and use them as weapons. There was even a planned aerial dogfight between WWII fighters and dragons. I would have loved to see that version.
WHAT? That's the movie we could have gotten and some moron studio head took it away?! That's it; time for an angry mob.
Load More Replies...They also used CG in a very well thought-out way - there are actual lifesize props for close-ups to lend realism, smoke and darkness create dramatic lighting while also hiding flaws, the actual animation of their movements is very realistic and follows physics, etc. It adds up to CG that is 20 years old but looks better than more recent movies with way bigger budgets.
If only there was a decent script there. If only ..
Load More Replies...Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, and Gerald Butler... ummm yes please!
Haha. Nazis. No. I worked on the film in 2001 in Wicklow, Ireland. Due to foot and mouth disease hitting the country, the film production was delayed and costs mounted, so the elaborate epic dragon world takeover scene to stun and start the film had to be shelved and the sedate opening newsprint 'montage' of dragons taking over the world was in its place, rendering the tone of the film a bit weak overall. Still, Matthew McConaughey gave us a laugh trying to be 'hard', chewing tobacco and lifting his weights before each take. Christian Bale was calm and professional and friendly, and Gerald Butler was a true gentleman, pissing ourselves laughing. Isabella Scorupco could play football but never remember her lines. And the 'dragons' were helicopters flying at us as we shot 'em with a Gatling gun in a massive set built up the Wicklow mountains. Good times.
The Quick And The Dead is without doubt the most underrated action movie of the 90's. think enter the dragon or bloodsport but replace martial arts with a quick draw tournament in the old west. starring the likes of Leonardo Dicaprio and Russel Crowe before they were famous and directed by Sam Raimi, with all his directing style trademarks in full glory. its a highly, highly entertaining movie.
This was my "if I flip past it on TV, I'll end up watching it" movie, but not because I think it's truly good. More like it's entertainingly nutso . The tone is all over the place. You've got Russel Crowe being seriously cool, you have Sharon Stone with a truly horrific tragic backstory, you have scenes of gutwrenching pathos ... and then you have over-the-top insanely ridiculous moments like a scene where the bad guy doesn't know he's been shot until he sees his shadow has a hole in it. Friggin' hilarious.
....and among the hilarity, my daughter and I have a favorite line from the movie: "Spotted Horse cannot be killed by a bullet!"
Load More Replies...I liked this movie a lot but it annoyed me that Sharon Stone's hair changed style and length in almost every scene.
Russell Crowe wasn't famous in America....but he was already a shared treasure at home... (born Kiwi), I was so happy seeing him acting next to Gene Hackman....
Rat Race. Movie is hysterical with a great cast. Maybe it’s popular but I’ve never heard anyone talk about it, even when it came out in theaters.
I love mad, mad, world much more. Most of the teams didn't seem to have any chemistry within them so the only one I ended up caring about was the narcoleptic Rowan Atkinson.
Load More Replies...Oh gosh, yes! This movie was so funny! The cow! lol. So much slapstick. I have to rewatch that now.
Lucky Number Slevin.
No idea how to describe it. It's not really a mob movie, although the main character is mixed up two mob bosses, a hitman, dirty NYC cops, and a horserace 20 years before that got an entire family wiped out. But it's a solid "wtf is going on here??" With an all star cast: Josh Hartnett, Sir Ben Kingsley, Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci, Lucy Liu.
Also Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is sweet, The Brother's Bloom is ... odd, but worth watching, and Across the Universe is one of the best musicals ever.
I agree. He's a great actor whose star was rising who suddenly plateaued and ended up doing B/C list movies since then. Its sad he stopped getting good roles.
Load More Replies...I love this movie and I'm always singing it praises. It oddly reviewed quite badly at the time but it's a very clever film with great dialogue. Apart from Bruce Willis everyone gives a really good performance, Lucy Luu shines here and her chemistry with Josh Hartnett is some of the best onscreen flirting I have ever seen. I thought the ending tried too hard to be clever but it's a great film nonetheless.
I remember that I recorded this based on the description in the paper. I expected a quite funny movie which I would delete after watching. But my husband and me had so much fun we saved it and still have it. Though I think we did not watch it again. Maybe we should.
Think of it as a mob crime drama mixed with a comic. A Sin City meets the Godfauther
There is no way his bath towel would’ve stayed on for so long in the beginning.
Sister Act 2, apparently it has really bad reviews on rotten tomatoes but I freaking love it!!
This one is sooooo good! Made my kid watch and he loved it. The pipes on Lauryn Hill, come on!
Everyone knows about it, Sister Act and Whoopi Goldberg were huge at the time. It's just bad, but I'm glad you loved it.
‘If you wanna be somebody. If you wanna go somewhere’…. I can recall that song on cue, anytime, anywhere.
Rotten Tomatoes is flawed. The averages can be so much higher than the actual shown rating, and I feel like that just isn’t right. I’ve seen films with around a fifty percent have a sixty percent average and one film with a three percent have a forty-two percent average. In the end, just go with your own opinion. It’s subjective, after all.
The dudes when they drive after the nuns when they fins out about sister Mary Clerance 😂
Return to OZ
I read all the OZ books as a kid and this is much closer to the feel than the Wizard of Oz movie with Garland. I love how dark it is, and to this day it's one of my favorite movies.
Love, love, LOVE this movie ever since I saw it as a child.... I was a strange child.
Get your own copy . . . the backgrounds are worth stopping the action. This was NOT a cheap production and closer to the original stories. The details go on forever.
Except it was written in the early 1900's, so not really. The people responsible for MK, etc. hijacked the stories and use them for their own ends. Just like with rainbows, butterflies, etc.
Load More Replies...The wheelers were terrifying. I had countless nightmares about then.
What a disturbing, non-kids film! Recommended but not if you have to deal with the sleepless aftermath.
Walt Disney really messed up when they promoted this film as a happy and bright sequel to Wizard of Oz. I saw it in the theaters when it was released, and it was one of the first DVDs I ever purchased. It's a fantastic story with brilliant acting and can be enjoyed on so many levels - as just a dark fantasy story, or as a parable about how mental illness was dealt with in the last century.
I can only speak from experiences in my country and friends I have talked to.
Hardly anyone here has seen Donnie Yen in the Ip Man movies, or any of his other work really
I started taking traditional wing chun kung fu classes because of this movie.

Wonderful movie. Pure personality and story-line that gives you the warm and fuzzies. Extremely well cast period movie.

I hate horror movies, and I hate (-insert the theme of that one awkward part you-know-what-I'm-talking-about-) but that movie.
Feast for the eyes, practical effects and costuming to die for, badass lead woman, every character treated so lovingly by Guillermo del Toro to let their personal reveals/developments build and shine...
There's a reason we watch it every Halloween. It is thrilling, and it does transport you.
I've just Googled it and have been informed that the critic score for it is a mere 6.5...uncultured swine, I tell you.
Long story short: I thought it was visually stunning, but had a very tepid story line
I’d watch Huddleston eat glass but honestly, I really liked this one and enjoyed the story. Nice to see Jessica Chastain being creepy af.
Normally I love Del Toro movies, Pan's Labyrinth is master piece and Momma is amazing, his designs for Hellboy felt like the comic visuals came to life, but this movie is just boring. The hooks and the twists could be seen from a mile away.
A good weird suspense movie, my recomdations go to a cure for wellness, for horror hereditary and for the what the !#$# is that my heart goes to midsommar.
Load More Replies...I have mad love for TH and the rest of the cast, but this movie is not that good IMO. The acting is top notch (as always from these actors), but overall it was fairly meh. I think one of the problems was that it was marketed as a horror movie when it should have been marketed as more of a gothic romance. The "scary" parts were not scary and my sister and I actually laughed out loud in the theatre at some of them. Even TH looking delicious in a tux cannot completely save this one.
YES!!! Tom again, the lovely Mia Wasikowska and a very scary Jessica Chastain... all with Guillermo Del Toro's colour and detail...just watched this again the other day...
Only Lovers Left Alive. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as vampires. Sexy film. Fantastic music.
I loved it too... it was fun and its also very easy to watch Tilda, Tom and John Hurt. Plus Mia Wasikowska's character... good movie...
I usually pass on vampire movies, but this one was fantastic. Don't be fooled into thinking it is for the Twilight crowd. It is much, much darker and deeper than that. Well worth a viewing on movie night or a lazy Sunday.
This movie is great! Funny, witty, bad, voracious! Love the scene where Hiddleston instantly appears behind Jeffrey Wright. 2 great actors doing comedic horror.
Pirates: Band of Misfits. I don't think it's particularly unknown, but no one ever talks about it.
I was lucky enough to attend the Aardman Animation exhibition in Melbourne a few years ago, and they had the original ship prop on display! I was very surprised to find out how BIG it actually was - the thing was the size of a smartcar!
Brilliant! Not for very young children as they don’t get the jokes.
This film is hilarious. When I watch it it's good to see the little jokes that you have to look for.
It's got David Tennant voice-acting! Sorry - that's the only thing I know about it. Might have to watch it.

Yes! This one is so pretty. I went to babysit my friend’s kids one night and while the friend was getting ready to go her daughter asked me if I liked the film and I replied I’d never seen it. Friend said, “What!? Ok, you kids can skip your bath tonight. You have to show her this movie!” I was impressed. The story is sweet and the visuals are stunninnnng.
Absolutely! One of the best movies (yes, not just animated movies - all of them) of the decade. Tomm Moore, please make more movies.
The same animators also made The Secret of Kells and Wolfwalkers--all fantastic movies!
Wait, you've already seen Wolfwalkers? But howwwwww? Been hunting to get it.....I've been mad in love w/ Tomm Moore since Secret of Kells.
Load More Replies...I have 3 daughters, we watch it at least every couple months. Beautiful graphics, touching story that is pretty layered for a kids movie.
ooo, this is a lovely movie, but my mostest favorite magical movie is "Secret of Kells". We have the book as well. Every time I see the video at Goodwill I buy it and pass them along to friends who Need to see the magic of Tomm Moore. Say to yourself..."Must find all Tomm Moore's movies. Must...find.....Must...find....
I forgot I saw this one! It was really beautiful! Thanks for the reminder...it's worth a rewatch.
OMG I saw this on one of those low-budget cable channels that shows nothing but movies they can get cheap... and I was blown away! It's beautiful and enchanting! Best thing I ever saw late at night on that crap channel! It's also free on Youtube, if I'm not mistaken, everyone check it out.
This was Oscar nominated in the animated film category too. It was good
I remember watching this movie when I was around 6-7 and it's adorable, would definitely recommend
Red Eye. B level movie where Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAddams blow everyone else out of the water.
Oooh yes, Tommy Shelby! Oh, I mean Cillian Murphy. Great, action-packed, suspenseful movie!
Exceptional movie, I was really drawn in by the plot line, but I felt it was much too short and didn't make full use of its potential; I wanted it to keep going
Pandorum.
A sci-fi horror Resident Evily type film.
It's an entertaining popcorn movie.
Oops, another one I went to see at the theatre but remember nothing about except Ben Foster was in it. :/ I think I was disappointed because I was expecting a new “Event Horizon” at the time.
Totally agree with you, i was expecting a new event horizon and how come is not on this list.

I really liked Mary and Max. Most people don't know of it. I've only seen it comes up once in a "sad movie" AskReddit post. Animation was great and the story had me crying at the end like a baby. It's one of the most depressing movies, that doesn't make you depressed. It was a happy cry for sure but it's so sad.
"Defiance"
An amazing TRUE story with photos during the credits of the real people. It takes place deep in the woods of WW2 Poland. A massive colony of Jewish people who defied the Nazis and fought along side the Russians and they survived the ENTIRE war there in the woods until it was over (obviously some of them died because they were fighting too). Some of which moving to the united states after (covered in the credits). So amazing. The start of the movie can be a little slow. But it was very good.
Good movie, though not that accurate to the real life partisan group of the Bielsky Brothers who. They tamed down the groups activities, took out the two leaders violent temper with their subordinates, and didn't include some of their most brilliant and daring raids. Good film, but not as accurate to the real story as one would wish
Zorro, The Gay Blade
It's Zorro and his secret twin brother who is EXTREMELY flamboyant and it's absolutely hysterical
George Hamilton is so under appreciated. He was great in dramatic films too, but yes, his comic delivery and timing are right up there. A must see is LOVE AT FIRST BITE. You'll thank me.
Out Cold (2001) I don't know if it's disliked but I haven't met anyone in real life who's heard of it.
It's Casablanca...but with snowboarders!
nothing like Casablanca with snowboards, but it is a great movie that's laid back and fun.
Load More Replies...My nephew was an extra in this movie. They liked how he was snowboarding and offered him a small role.
Veggietales: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything
For a kids movie, it has a pretty great story line, some decent action and dark undertones that outdoes 99℅ of movies of the same target audience, and an absolute slammer of a parody of Rock Lobster by the B-52s (called Rock Monster) that honestly does it better than the original.
Even if you are not religious this movie is worth watching. So super cute
You are missing out with that attitude. I only watched a few episodes all the way through, but had a "Silly Songs with Larry" playlist for years. 😆

James Gunn's pre-GOTG movies, 'Slither' and 'Super'
They aren't very well known and both of them flopped in theaters. I love both of them because the bizarre humor works for me but I would understand why some people wouldn't like them.
This should be higher. Slither is so so great. Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks!
generally speaking, everything Nathan Fillion is in is great.
Load More Replies...Ah man, Slither is another fun movie, Michael Rooker was so great in it. I got it in a double dvd pack together with Cabin Fever, two off the wall bonkers little gorefests.
The Fountain. Done by Darren Aronofsky starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. I think people thought it was just too weird.
I got through. You didn't miss anything.
Load More Replies...If I had to pick a single favourite movie it would be this! It’s just so visually and aurally stunning, I don’t even really care about the storyline(s).
Some of the visuals in this are glorious - I think they used microscopes to film what becomes the 'deep space' effects. Stunning! also the score is beautiful - Clint Mansell is the best!
It IS weird. But i enjoyed it the one time i watched it. At one point you stop trying to make sense of things and it has a kind of hypnotic quality.
People like me. I went in for a movie and got an incomprehensible metaphysical mess.
Repo: The Genetic Opera. Don’t know why it’s not more widely known, Paris Hilton was in it!
One of the best parts is when Paris Hilton's face falls off cause she got surgery just before the show
If you can't enjoy seeing Giles from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reach inside of a dude and work him like a sock puppet during a musical number, I don't wanna talk to you
Terrance Zdunich love him. The Devil's Carnival another great movie he stars in.
OMG, I love the songs so much and the song in the photo is my favorite.
I love this, still listen to the soundtrack regularly. If you'd told me The kid from Spy Kids, Paris Hilton and one of the members of Skinny Puppy would somehow all work in a great film together I would have laughed my head off!
And when the gun goes off it sparks and you're ready for surgery (surgery)!
WONDERFUL! Also on my Top 5 of All-time greats! Very underrated imo✌🏾
Finally. 42 on this list is the first one that warrants being here.
Mom and Dad Save the World. Dumb low-budget comedy from the 90s that was simply fantastic!
It wasn't molestation. Nor did he posses child porn as the media reported. Read the court records. Media screaming for blood and provoking witch hunts for profit do not represent the truth. Did I mention people in the crowd screaming "burn the witch!" Syndrome also.
Yass, I mentioned Stay Tuned above. It was so funny.
Load More Replies...This is a dumb movie that knows it's dumb and revels in it. Its humor doesn't always hit, but when it does it's hilarious. You definitely have to be in the right mood to enjoy it.
Predestination (2014). A time travel banger starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook (of Succession fame).
I watched this film a while ago and it still hurts my head to think about it. The basic premise was so-so, but the convoluted way it was padded out and intertwined made it intriguing and painful in equal measure. If I said anything else it would be a spoiler, but if you've seen it you should understand completely!
Six string samurai. Basically a post apocalyptic flick where the bombs went off in the 50’s and Buddy Holly had to pick up a sword and go roaming samurai in the wasteland.
Got curious if I could find it because it’s been a few years and apparently it’s on YouTube if anyone wants to check it out.
RIP Buddy Holly, i'm a 34yo french and i still listen to his music, the accident was so tragic they were so young and could have brought a lot into music and people's hearts.
Cannibal! the Musical
An early work from Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It tells the story of Alferd Packer, who confessed to cannibalism while on trial for the deaths of his five other party members.
The movie was released by the venerable Troma Entertainment.
It’s witty, it’s gruesome, and the songs are catchy.
SO GOOD!!!! Got my Hubs to track it down for me....loved as a teen, love it now... If Trey Parker writes songs in something I will watch it...
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping bombed at the box office, but in my opinion it’s one of the best comedies ever made. A satire of pop stardom written by and starring The Lonely Island, and featuring a song with the lyrics “f@#k me like we f@#$%d Bin laden”? Should’ve won an Oscar tbh
If that's one of the best comedies "ever made" (read "I've watched"), then you've not seen much..
Songs were actually very well done. Fun fact, the guys in Andy Samberg’s band are best friends irl and call themselves Lonely Island. C’mon, with songs like these, you can’t go wrong: She wanted to f*ck me harder than the US government f*cked Bin Laden
Kung Fury.
It's on YouTube, queue it up and enjoy a half hour of hilarious ridiculousness.
Kung Fury 2 is out next year and Arnie plays the president. Michael Fassbender is in it too!
Oh my, I followed the advice and it did not disappoint. I was less than a minute in before I choked on my coffee the first time.
Bebes Kids. Maybe the hype died down? Idk. But if it doesn’t fit the category completely, it’s still a good movie IMO
RIP Robin Harris. If you haven’t seen it check out his stand up that lead to this movie.
Big Trouble.
The movie famously flopped after 9/11 because of the plot involving a bomb being smuggled on a plane (which wasn’t a very hip storyline at the time).
I always thought it was really funny and had some nice supporting characters. It’s definitely criminally underrated.
UHF by Weird AL plot is simple but lots of bits and quotes that are funny.
Some of these I get, but some others I must have a different definition than Bored Panda in regards to "few people know about".
The majority of content on Bored Panda (and many other sites) is taken from Reddit. In this case it was a question posed in the r/AskReddit sub. The question, as asked on Reddit was "What’s a movie you love that is unpopular or unknown by most people?".

If you want to see really good forgotten gems, seek out the originals of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and The Quick and the Dead. If Out Cold is supposed to be Casablanca with snowboarders, then just watch the original Casablanca. I guarantee it’ll be much better. Rat Race is supposed to be the sequel for It’s a Mad Mad Mad World—-a stupid sixties slapstick, but my god the cast they were able to assemble makes you forget the outlandish storyline!
Hope And Glory. Probably one of my favorite movies, nobody I know has ever heard of it even with 5 Academy Award nominations..
“They’re lovely when they’re full, and it’s so sad when they sag”. Saw this movie on HBO right after it left the theatres. Been trying to get my British WWII buff husband to watch it for years. No idea why he’s so damn resistant.
Load More Replies...What Dreams May Come. Not sure how popular the movie is internationally, but where I live, barely anybody has seen it and those that have find it boring. One of Robin Williams‘ best roles imo.
absolutely! i have the dvd. What Dreams May Come is a beautiful movie, but one of those that takes repeated viewings to really appreciate... which I suspect the aethetics of certain scenes and the heaviness of the movie overall might have prevented
Load More Replies...Try these: The Man Who Would Be King (Sean Connery & Michael Caine -- story by Ruyard Kipling); Five Element Ninjas (1982) -- strangely elegant layout; Cone Heads movie; The Darkest Hour (not the Churchill one -- alien invasion of Moscow & the world) (2011). Even if you have to buy them, they are cheap and you WILL watch them many times over!
The Man Who Would be King is my joint top favourite film (with Blade Runner), I can watch it over and over again, it was nominated for 4 Academy Awards and 2 Golden Globes, it's got a stunning Maurice Jarre soundtrack, 2 Actors at the top of their respective games plus a fantastic turn by the late Saeed Jaffrey, more people need to see this film!! Now Zardoz on the other hand...!!
Load More Replies...Some good ones there. I'd add these: The Triplets of Belleville is animated and so weirdly wonderful. Little Otik is almost impossible to find and bizarre, not for children. Jeanne Tripplehorn in the romcom 'Til There Was You. A love story set in Los Angeles torn between old and new. The best for last, Peter's Friends. It's really watching dear old friends reunited. Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson (and her mom,) Hugh Laurie and Imelda Staunton again as a married couple, Kenneth Branagh, Rita Rudner and Alphonsia Emmanuel.
If you like Belleville, I also suggest The Illusionist. That one was interesting and beautiful as well.
